Robert Warren Horesky Jr. was born April 11, 1957, in Norton, KS to 
Robert W. and Mary Joe (Sparkman) Horesky. He passed away June 22, 2022,&nbsp; at Redbud Village in Plainville, KS. 
 Bob was raised on the family farm in Norton and was a 1975 Norton 
Community High School graduate. He worked as a construction company 
contractor and enjoyed fishing and reading in his spare time.
 Bob was preceded in death by his father, Robert W. Horesky and 
sister, Debra L. Belcher. He is survived by his mother, Mary Jo Horesky 
of Norton, KS; brothers, John E. (Tammy) Horesky of Ellis, KS and James

who passed away with his wife by his side on Father’s Day, June 19, 
2022, in Butzbach, Germany. Dave had a difficult battle with cancer and 
is finally at rest. He will be forever loved and forever remembered. 
 Dave was born on June 4, 1964, in Norton, Kansas to Bob and Gisela

 Keen." His family also remembers as a little boy in Germany, when on 
vacation, Dave was strong-armed/robbed by a midget who told him “Give me
 your money or I’ll break your arm." Another story is when Dave survived
 being struck by lightning. 
 Dave worked for Garrett’s Heating and Plumbing and Northwest Kansas 
Pawnbrokers where he worked for each company for many years. He loved 
Rock music and all kinds of concerts, backstage passes, and Rock 
memorabilia. He also enjoyed watching and attending professional 
wrestling. Dave married Daniela on September 20, 2019 in Butzbach, 
Germany.
 Dave is survived by his wife, Daniela; son, Donavan; two 
grandchildren, Tucker and Kolton; four older brothers, and several 
nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Gisela 
Harrington.

David 'Dave' Wayne Harrington

Ronald Lewis Estes went home to be with his Lord on March 18, 2020, 
at the age of 85, following complications from a stroke. He was preceded
 in death by his wife of 55 years, Rowena Sue (Hodge) Estes (1939-2015) 
and son Michael Edward Estes (1971-2014). He is survived by siblings 
Hazel Estes of Kanorado, KS, Stan (Bev) Estes of Scandia, KS, Arlene (d.
 Tom) Stephenson of Cross Plains, TX, Bryan (d. Kitty) of Jacksonville, 
FL, sons Larry (Julie) Estes of Carlisle, PA, Tim (Lori) Estes of Castle
 Rock, CO, and his “favorite daughter”, Terri (Chris) Brady of Cary, NC 
as well as 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren and many nieces 
and nephews.

Ron, “Ronnie,” “Dad”, “Pop Pop,” was the first-born to his parents, 
Raymond Estes (1902-1987) originally of Gallatin, MO and C. Fern Estes, 
originally of Modoc, KS (1916-2016) in their home in the rural outskirts
 of Tribune, KS, of Greeley County. In 1941, the family moved to the 
farm, “Peaceful Valley,” off exit 1 of I-70 in Kanorado, KS, which 
remained in the family until his mother’s death in 2016.

His brilliance was often hidden by his quiet demeanor, but the mental
 giant would sometimes let his intelligence be shown. After beginning in
 a rural one-room-schoolhouse in the early 1940’s, he was promoted from 
3rd to 5th grade in 1944, skipping 4th grade altogether. In 1952, he 
graduated from Kanorado (KS) High School, where he had football, 
basketball and baseball experience, though he often touted that he 
weighed 98 pounds soaking wet at the time. The first college graduate in
 his family lineage, he began at Ft. Hays State University in fall of 
1952, and graduated from Kansas State University in May of 1957 with a 
degree in Electrical Engineering. He went on to obtain his Professional 
Engineering License in Pennsylvania in 1969 and in Colorado in 1993, and
 then a Master Electrician Certification in Colorado in 1994.

After college, he immediately began his engineering career at 
Pittsburgh Plate Glass (PPG) in Crystal City, MO, but was sidetracked by
 being drafted into the US Army, in December of 1957. His two-year Army 
service began in Camp Carson, Colorado Springs, CO, but quickly moved to
 Red Stone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL, where he was assigned a cute 
civilian secretary, Rowena Sue Hodge (of Talladega, AL), who feigned 
“car problems,” to get his attention one day after work. Sue and Ron 
were married April 3, 1960, shortly after Ron was reinstated as an 
electrical engineer in the management path at PPG back in Crystal City, 
MO.&nbsp; From Crystal City, MO to Pittsburgh, PA to Carlisle, PA, Ron 
transferred with PPG, picking up several patents in glass-making along 
the way. Retiring from PPG in 1990, with a now empty Pennsylvania nest, 
Ron and Sue moved back west to their dream area of Ft. Collins, CO, 
where Ron started his own company called EWorks and did contract 
Professional Engineering work in the area, including work for Merit 
Electric. After his bride’s death in 2015, Ron relocated to Aurora, CO 
and in 2019, Castle Rock, CO.

As a father, he will be remembered as a devoted Moreland Elementary 
School PTA President, a dedicated Teener League baseball coach for his 
boys and an active Boy Scouts of America Scout Master in Carlisle, PA – 
including receiving the prestigious BSA Silver Beaver award for his 
service. He claimed he gave all of his musical ability to his children 
and is why he had none left, but he was a continual support for their 
music activities, including a stint as president of the Carlisle High 
School Band Boosters.

It was never clear whether he really preferred burned cookies, extra 
brown bananas or overdone meat, but he always selflessly took the less 
desirable, never wasting and always grateful to the chef. Common 
courtesy was important to him, and he would never leave a grocery cart 
in a parking lot, causing work or harm for someone else – a metaphor for
 his life.&nbsp; He will be remembered for quotes like, “Do your best; angels
 can do no more;” “You wouldn’t care what people thought of you if you 
realized how rarely they do;” “People don’t care how much you know till 
they know how much you care;” And “Let’s go to bed, so these nice people
 can go home,” (how he seemed to quickly bring his wife’s social events 
at home to an end.) His attitude was always positive, and when asked how
 he was, he would cheerily reply, “Upright and taking nourishment!”

Faith was an important part of his life, as he led in such a way as 
to, “Preach Christ; and if you must, use words.” He was actively 
involved in Second Presbyterian Church in Carlisle, PA; Bible Study 
Fellowship and First Presbyterian Church in Ft. Collins, CO; and Eagle 
Bend Church in Aurora, CO. Ron was a regular blood donor for decades, 
and as a result is likely responsible for the saving of many lives.

The “Ol’ Farmer” – as he often referred to himself, despite his 
degrees and titles –&nbsp;could leave his Kansas childhood farm, but the farm
 could never leave him. He often commented on the height of the corn or 
the space between rows of beans when driving across the country. Sunsets
 were his favorite. In his final days on this earth, he gave 
instructions regarding the planting of a garden that spring – a reminder
 that life does go on.

A Celebration of Life Service for Ron will be held on July 1, 2022, at
 2:00 PM MT at Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland.&nbsp; Those who are

Pete Harley Pilatus of Hays, KS (Formerly of Denver, Colorado) passed away June 19th, 2022, on Father’s Day while in the comfort of his home from health complications at the age of 72. He leaves behind his only daughter, Gina Renee Van Decar and son-in-law, Erik Van Decar; his two precious grandsons Brandon Olivo (Greeley, CO) and Sebastyen Olivo (Greeley, CO); and a beautiful great granddaughter, Layla Olivo (Greeley, CO). Pete was born on March 4th, 1950, in Manteca, CA to Alferd Pilatus and Irma Casto (Pilatus) who predeceased him. He grew up in a wonderful family with one brother David Pilatus (Doris) (Hays, KS) and two sisters; Liz Michealis (Belgrade, MT) and Debra Crawford (Alexandria, VA). He graduated from Manteca High School in 1968 and loved playing the clarinet in the school band. He desired to be a self taught automobile mechanic and that’s exactly what he achieved. His love of fast cars and owning many Mustangs in his life was a dream he fulfilled. He was very adventurous and he loved the outdoors of Colorado including seeing all the different wildlife and doing a lot of ice fishing as well as regular fishing. He also loved to travel to the mountains and has been known to be a wonderful travel Companion. During Pete’s Life he has been married three times and divorced but loved every single one of them. He has since been living the single life for the past year and was an excellent cook. Pete was a driven man with an unmatched ethic and was an avid computer programmer in his free time. At 72, he was extremely tech savvy and loved watching documentaries on YouTube. Pete was also a very gifted story teller, and he could entertain a group for hours about his adventures and experiences. He absolutely loved life. He loved all of his family and especially his daughter Gina, with all his heart, and he beamed with pride as he walked her down the aisle at her wedding just a few short months ago. A Private Graveside Memorial Service will be held in Munjor, KS at a future time. The family would especially like to thank Chris, Curt, Scott and John Wellbrock. Pete Harley Pilatus

Rockie Joe Jones, 75, passed away on June 20, 2022, at home in Great 
Bend, Kansas. He was born on July 17, 1946, at Pittsburg, Kansas to Earl
 and Noami (Neil) Jones. Rockie married Patricia Jarvis on January 05, 
1971, in McPherson, Kansas. She survives.

A long-time resident of Great Bend coming from McPherson 28 years 
ago, Rockie worked as a service manager. He served clients of McPherson 
Business Machines, Central Office Products, and Office Products, Inc. He
 was an avid motorcyclist and a member of the Flatlanders Car Club.

Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Kris (Sara) Jones of
 Goddard; four grandchildren, Sienna (Nolan) Carmine, Madison, Leo and 
Ava Jones; one great-grandson, Nash Carmine; a brother, Neil Snyder of 
Colo.; and a sister, Penny Northness of N.M. He is preceded in death by 
his parents and one brother.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Services

Rockie Joe Jones

Agnes Mae Schrant, 90, longtime Hays resident, died Friday, June 17, 2022, at Brandon Woods at Alvamar in Lawrence.

She was born January 5, 1932, in 
Victoria, the daughter of Frank C. and Agnes Mae (Dinkel) Sander.&nbsp; She 
graduated from Victoria High School in 1950.&nbsp; On June 9, 1951, Agnes was 
united in marriage to Ralph W. Schrant in Victoria, and they were 
married nearly 53 years before he preceded her in death on April 23, 
2004.&nbsp; She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in 
Hays, Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lawrence, and the St. Fidelis 
Daughters of Isabella Circle #364.&nbsp; Agnes was a devoted wife, mother, 
and caregiver who possessed a strong faith in God, attended daily mass, 
and devoutly prayed the rosary. &nbsp;She was a good listener and proud of 
her grandchildren and great grandchildren.&nbsp; &nbsp;She enjoyed crocheting, 
gardening, planting flowers, and reading.&nbsp; Agnes loved big band era 
music, &nbsp;church music, and phone conversations with her family and 
friends.

Her family would like to thank the 
Brandon Woods Dogwood Staff, Elara Hospice, Dr. Martha Allen, and Andrew
 for their compassionate care.

Survivors include her daughter: Linda

 Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9:00 am until service time

Victoria, the daughter of Frank C. and Agnes Mae (Dinkel) Sander.&nbsp; She 
graduated from Victoria High School in 1950.&nbsp; On June 9, 1951, Agnes was 
united in marriage to Ralph W. Schrant in Victoria, and they were 
married nearly 53 years before he preceded her in death on April 23, 
2004.&nbsp; She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in 
Hays, Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lawrence, and the St. Fidelis 
Daughters of Isabella Circle #364.&nbsp; Agnes was a devoted wife, mother, 
and caregiver who possessed a strong faith in God, attended daily mass, 
and devoutly prayed the rosary. &nbsp;She was a good listener and proud of 
her grandchildren and great grandchildren.&nbsp; &nbsp;She enjoyed crocheting, 
gardening, planting flowers, and reading.&nbsp; Agnes loved big band era 
music, &nbsp;church music, and phone conversations with her family and 
friends.Her family would like to thank the

 Mae Sellers,&nbsp;age 91, of&nbsp;WaKeeney, Kansas, passed away on June 16, 
2022,&nbsp;early in the morning.&nbsp;Gladys&nbsp;was born in&nbsp;WaKeeney on&nbsp;September 29,
 1930.&nbsp;Gladys graduated&nbsp;from&nbsp;Trego Community High&nbsp;School.

Gladys&nbsp;was united in marriage to&nbsp;Douglas Sellers&nbsp;on&nbsp;September 2, 1951. They were married&nbsp;for 45 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;She&nbsp;worked as a&nbsp;store
 owner&nbsp;for&nbsp;D-J Flowers&nbsp;for&nbsp;18 years.&nbsp;She&nbsp;enjoyed&nbsp;being a housewife, 
raising her two sons, and living on the farm where she was born when she 
was not working.

She&nbsp;was also actively involved in&nbsp;many clubs and sororities.

Gladys&nbsp;is survived by&nbsp;her 2 sons Randy and Mike; 6 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and&nbsp;other family and friends.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Doug; parents John and Freda; and brother Alfred Schemm.

A graveside service will be held at&nbsp;11:30am on&nbsp;June 23, 2022,&nbsp;at&nbsp;the WaKeeney City Cemetery with Pastor Kim officiating.

Vernon Raymond Schneider, 84, passed away on June 18, 2022, at the 
Grisell Memorial Hospital in Ransom, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on January 9, 
1938, in WaKeeney, Kansas, the son of Harm and Elsie (Eichman) Schneider.

Vernon was a farmer. He was a former president of Rural Water 
District. He was the owner of South 40 Enterprise and Lawn Mower Repair 
Shop. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ransom. He 
married LaVeta Rider on December 10, 1957, in Mexico.&nbsp; She died on 
February 11, 2017.

Survivors include his son, Troy Schneider and his life partner, 
Michelle Horton, of Ransom; two daughters, Debbie (Jeff) Jensen of 
Hillsboro, Tammy (Walter) Knight of Shawnee; seven grandchildren, Bryan,
 Chris, and Tyler Jensen, Caytlin and Walt Cody Knight, Matthew and 
&nbsp;Madelyn Horton; six great-grandchildren, Hadley, Jameson, Conner, 
Carson, and Carter Jensen, and Kole.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his 
parents, wife, LaVeta Schneider; three brothers, Leon, Leonard, Ken 
Schneider; two sisters, LaDonna Schwien, and Clarice Bell.

Funeral service will be on Saturday, June 25, 2022, 10:00 A.M., at

Eugene Adolph Schoenberger

John Benjamin Wearing passed away peacefully on June 18, 2022, with his wife and sons by his side.

Ben was born March 2, 1953, in Salina, Kansas, to Paul and Verna Wearing. He was a graduate of Salina Central, Hutchinson Community College and Kansas State University. (EMAW, baby!)

Ben was a true news junkie. His newspaper career spanned more than 3 decades. He worked at weekly papers in Arkansas and Oklahoma before returning to his hometown to become the police beat reporter at the Salina Journal. There he worked for nearly 30 years, retiring in 2015 as the Executive Editor. During his time at the Journal, Ben was dedicated to making the daily paper accurate, interesting, and relevant to his readers. He was a natural journalist, curious and doggedly dedicated to getting the story right. As an editor, he was picky about the facts and the writing. He mentored many young reporters and students, some of whom remained in touch for years. His columns entertained readers; his editorials made them think. Many of his colleagues at the Journal became life-long friends.

Following his retirement, Ben spent even more time riding his beloved bicycles, cutting firewood, and taking over the kitchen.

Ben loved to cook and particularly to bake. His pies, cookies, cinnamon rolls, and most of all his cheesecakes were enjoyed by friends, family and colleagues for decades.&nbsp; Three bylines on page one earned a cheesecake.

As a journalist, Ben was cautious about getting overly involved with local organizations, wanting to avoid any appearance of conflict of interest. Once retired, he joined the AMBUCS at the urging of a friend and found a home with the ramp building crew. The service project combined his love of physical labor with his love of helping others.

In 1985 Ben and Betsy Green went on a lunch date. Two days later they went to dinner and talked until the restaurant closed. A year later they were engaged. They were married three months after that, on October 10, 1987. Theirs was a true love affair. He was her strongest supporter, helpmate and best friend. He was a thoughtful gift giver and frequently bought flowers, “just because.” &nbsp;Together they raised three sons that were the light of Ben’s life. When they were children, Ben wrestled and played with them, read them stories and taught them to work hard. &nbsp;As they became young adults, he listened to them, counseled them when asked, and encouraged them to pursue their dreams.

Ben enjoyed going on walks, visiting with neighbors chatting about cool cars or bikes. He was a loving dog parent and when walking his own pups, carried treats in his pocket for the neighborhood dogs. &nbsp;He was the guy who mowed a neighbor’s lawn, shoveled the sidewalk, or stopped by with a chainsaw to help with a downed limb.

Ben and Betsy loved to travel – alone, with friends, and mostly with their sons. &nbsp;In particular, he was always up for a trip to the Mountains. Ben loved spending time with his siblings. He also loved Betsy’s family and they often traveled to spend time with them. After he was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in 2014, Ben and Betsy were determined not to let cancer dictate their lives. They did not waste a minute of the time they had left.

Ben is survived by his wife, Betsy, sons James, Bob, and Christopher; a sister, Debbie Bengtson (Ken), brothers Gary (Lorrie), Steve (Vickie), Mike (Jan), and Pat; a sister-in-law, Judy Wearing, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Joe; and a sister-in-law, Ellen.

Ben was a tremendous husband, father, brother, and friend.&nbsp; He had a great sense of humor, was patient, never judgmental and seldom displayed anger. He was a workout fanatic, a grammar expert and had great legs.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 25, at 1:30 at the chapel at Webster Conference Center,&nbsp;2601 N. Ohio, in&nbsp;Salina.

Barbara J. (Gregwire) Scheck, 71, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Saturday evening, June 18, 2022 at her home.

Barbara was born October 1, 1950, in Russell, the daughter of Gordon and Marilyn (Flohr) Gregwire.&nbsp; She grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the Class of '68.&nbsp; She then attended Emporia State University for a year and then transferred to Fort Hays State University where she obtained a Degree in Nursing.

Barbara was united in marriage to Timothy F. Scheck on August 7, 1971.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two daughters, Mindie and Kristie.&nbsp; They made their home in Hays from 1971 to 1974 when they returned to Russell.

Barbara was a Registered Nurse for the Russell Hospital for over 20 years working mainly in the surgical department.&nbsp; Then from 1994 to 1998 she worked with the Russell Home Health.&nbsp; She attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was an active member of the Russell Regional Hospital Auxiliary.&nbsp; She enjoyed doing puzzles like crosswords and cryptograms, doing cross stitching, and baking and cooking for family and friends.&nbsp; What would bring a sparkle to her eye was her grandchildren, she loved attending their activities and having them over to the house.&nbsp; She also had a gift of knowing everyone’s birthday and made special effort to call them on their special day.

Barbara’s surviving family include her husband of 50 years, Tim of the home; daughters, Mindie Ulrich (Jeremy) of Russell, Kansas and Kristie Homeier (Brent) of Russell, Kansas; brother, Richard Gregwire (Janet) of McPherson, Kansas; sister, Roberta Jaye (Denny) of Lindsborg, Kansas; four grandchildren, Briar Ulrich, Gunnar Ulrich, Brock Homeier and Bryce Homeier; and treasured nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews, and cousins.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents.

Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, June 25, 2022, at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church with burial of ashes following at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Russell.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Friday, June 24, 2022, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary.&nbsp; Vigil and Rosary will be held at 7:00 PM, Friday, at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church.&nbsp;

Charlene Flax, age 78, of Ellis, Kansas, passed away Sunday, June 19, 2022, at Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney, Kansas. Charlene was born April 23, 1944, in Hays, Kansas, to Martin and Felicitas (Leiker) Klaus. Larry Willis “Scotty” Scott, 80, born on January 29, 1939, in 
Goodland, Kansas, passed away surrounded by his loving family Wednesday 
September 18, 2019, at Silvercrest at College View Retirement Community 
in Lenexa, KS.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Paul William Scott and Lydia (Kaiser) Scott, as well as his brother Jerry Scott.

Larry is survived by his wife Martha “Marti” (Tallman) Scott; their 
sons Lars (wife Tara) and Lance (wife Mindy); his brother Don; and his 
grandchildren Landon, Marissa, Aubrey and Ashley.

Larry grew up and lived in Goodland, KS, subsequently residing in Sun
 Lakes, AZ and Lenexa, KS. In 1962, he served in the US Army stationed 
at Fort Carson, CO, where he met his wife Martha “Marti” Tallman and 
they were married July 11, 1964, in Snyder, NY. Larry loved his family 
and moved to Lenexa in 2018 to be closer to them.

Larry attended college at Fort Hays State University and worked for 
Rhoads Construction in Goodland for 33 years. He became a part owner of 
the construction company a year and a half after starting, serving as 
the company’s Secretary/Treasurer. Larry and Marti started a successful 
Shaklee business in 1973, which allowed them to travel the world, build 
closer relationships with distant relatives and make new friends.

Larry and Marti always enjoyed going out to dances, parties, dinners 
or just out to be with friends. Anyone who knew Larry and Marti would 
agree that they could “cut a rug” on the dance floor. Larry enjoyed 
keeping in touch with his Goodland High School class of ’57, talking 
about Shaklee, playing golf, playing poker, working on genealogy, 
telling stories and nobody was ever a stranger to Larry. He was also a 
devoted Christian and very involved with the United Methodist Church in 
Goodland and Sun Lakes.

The last few years of his life Larry fought progressive supranuclear 
palsy (PSP) that affected his swallowing, speech, and other functions. 
In lieu of flowers and in remembrance of Larry donations may be given to

A graveside memorial service will be Friday, July 1, 2022, at 9 a.m.

Richard Wayne Winter, age 62, died at his home on June 18, 2022. He 
was born on March 4, 1960, in Marion, Kansas, the son of Donald and Judith
 (Cogdill) Winter.

Dick moved with his family to Ness City in 1961 where he graduated 
from Ness City High School, met his wife to be, started a band, raised 
his family, and grew a business. Dick was the lead singer in the ever 
popular, local band, “Thunder and Lightning," he ran Ness City Auto 
Parts for many years, and was the owner and operator of Dick's Pumping 
Service, LLC.

On August 13, 1988, he married Michele Swim in Ness City, Kansas.&nbsp; 
Together they raised their two children and worked in the businesses 
together.

Dick is survived by Michele, his wife of 33 years; son Dylan Winter 
(Karissa Boyles), of Ness City; daughter, Courtney Haynes (Bradley) of 
Goessel; mother, Judith Winter of Ness City; two brothers, Randy Winter 
and Shawn Winter (Karen Seib) all of Ness City; nephew, Ryan Winter 
(Shannon Fehrenbach) of Ness City; sisters, Traci Maier (Craig) of 
Lakewood, Colorado and Kim Melichar (Mike) of Andale; and two 
grandchildren, Marley and Maggie Winter; and many nieces, nephews, great
 nieces and great nephews.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his father, Don,
 and his brother, Kenneth.

Funeral service will be held on Thurs day, June 23, 2022, 10:30 a.m. 
at the United Methodist Church, Ness City, followed by burial in the

19, 2022, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La 
Crosse, Kansas.

Shirley was born November 2, 1935, in rural Rush County, Kansas, the 
daughter of Edmond B. and Charlet D. (Schaffer) Kline.&nbsp; She was a 
lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas.&nbsp; Shirley and her husband, Art,
 owned and operated the Wishbone Café in La Crosse, Kansas. She also 
worked at Leiker’s Daylight Donut, and the Rush County Memorial 
Hospital, both of La Crosse, Kansas, before her retirement.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

On March 5, 1962, she married Wendlin A. “Art” Urban at St. Michael’s
 Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death July 16, 
2011.

Shirley and Art&nbsp; enjoyed camping, fishing, and spending time with their families.

Survivors include:&nbsp; two sisters, Bernice Stegman (Sy), Derby, Kansas,
 and Eileen Love (Jack), Great Bend, Kansas; and numerous nephews and 
nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and &nbsp;two brothers, Gerald “Jerry” Kline, and Gene Kline.

Church visitation will be Saturday, June 25, 2022, from 9:00 A.M. to

Shirley Ann Urban

Doreen Elizabeth (Wagoner) Kennedy, 99, passed away at the Sheridan 
County Health Complex LTC on June 18, 2022. She was born to Edward 
Nicholas and Kathryn (Schwarz) Wagoner on March 16, 1923, at the family 
home northeast of Grinnell, Kansas. 

Doreen grew up on the farm with her 
seven siblings. She attended a one-room grade school, Hillside #60 and 
went to high school in Oakley for a year and finished her last three 
years and graduated from Hoxie High School in the class of 1941. Raymond
 Garland, Principal of Hoxie High School, got her a scholarship to 
attend Barnes Business College in Denver where she earned a certificate.
 After attending Business College, she returned to Hoxie and went to 
work at the ASCS office. 

Doreen Wagoner married William Francis Kennedy 
on October 2, 1945, at St. Paul Catholic Church, in Angelus, Kansas. 
After their marriage, they lived on a farm near Stockton, Kansas. 
Several years later, they moved to their farm south of Hoxie. They were 
blessed with six children which they raised on the family farm south of 
Hoxie. Bill passed away on August 19, 1978.
 Doreen was elected and served as Sheridan County Clerk for twelve 
years. She enjoyed growing a big garden and had a huge strawberry patch.
 She spent many hours canning tomatoes, peaches, pears, beets and 
making pickles. She loved to bake, and her pies were the best. She 
worked for the Hoxie Sale barn and baked pies for them to serve with the
 meals they prepared. Doreen was a hard worker, but she enjoyed many 
activities. She loved dancing. she especially liked the polka, big 
band swing and square dancing. Playing cards, Pitch, and Pinochle, was 
another favorite pastime.

She was a member of the Red Hats Group, was 
involved with the Western Plains Arts Association, and the Northwest 
Kansas Area Agency on Aging. Doreen spent many mornings enjoying coffee 
and the company of friends at the Stop-to-Shop and Mahanna’s Pharmacy. 
She also enjoyed traveling with several of her friends going on bus 
trips around the country as well as trips to Hawaii, Mexico, and the 
Panama Canal. Family get togethers, particularly, Thanksgiving and 
Christmas celebrations were some of her favorite family times. She loved
 going to the Sheridan County Fair and always enjoyed visiting with 
friends. She just loved being around people and socializing. Doreen grew
 up and was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church in Angelus. After 
moving to Hoxie, Doreen attended the Church in Seguin, Kansas until 
Hoxie got a Catholic Church in 1949. She became a lifelong member of the
 St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, Hoxie, Kansas. She served as the 
treasurer of the St. Frances Cabrini Sodality for many years. 
 Doreen is survived by are her daughters Marilynn Nemes (Al) of 
Littleton, Colorado, Sheryl McIlnay (Joe) of Colby, Kansas; sons, Don 
Kennedy (Kathy) of Oakley, Kansas, Jim Kennedy (Deb) of Dodge City, 
Kansas, and Keith Kennedy (Pat) of Hoxie, Kansas; grandchildren, 
Kimberly Garfield (Aaron), Michelle Guthrie (Lee), Brian Kennedy (Lily),
 Dan Kennedy, Michael Kennedy (Mahalia), Melissa Johnson (Douglas), Dr. Brad
 McIlnay (Gretchen), Angela Holtz (Bobby), Amanda Juenemann (Michael), 
Cari Miller (Jay), Ryan Kennedy (Lacie), Adam Kennedy (Lorena), Jenna 
Sloan (Hale), Jill Schoendaler (Drew), and Kyle Kennedy (Jennifer); and 
thirty-five great-grandchildren.
 She was preceded in death by her husband, William Kennedy; son, 
Ronald Kennedy and great-grandson, John Juenemann; parents, Edward and Kathryn Wagoner; sisters, Marjorie 
Bachand, Eileen Nondorf, and Patricia Foster; and brothers, Wilfred 
Wagoner, LeRoy Wagoner, James Wagoner, and Kenneth Wagoner.
 A Mass of Christian Burial is planned for Friday, June 24, 2022, 
10:30 A.M., at the St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, Hoxie, Kansas. 
Visitation will be Thursday, June 23, 2022, from 1:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. 
with family receiving friends from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral
 home. The Vigil and Rosary Service will be held following the 
visitation and will begin at 7:00 P.M.

worked for the Hoxie Sale barn and baked pies for them to serve with the
 meals they prepared. Doreen was a hard worker, but she enjoyed many 
activities. She loved dancing. she especially liked the polka, big 
band swing and square dancing. Playing cards, Pitch, and Pinochle, was 
another favorite pastime. She was a member of the Red Hats Group, was 
involved with the Western Plains Arts Association, and the Northwest 
Kansas Area Agency on Aging. Doreen spent many mornings enjoying coffee 
and the company of friends at the Stop-to-Shop and Mahanna’s Pharmacy. 
She also enjoyed traveling with several of her friends going on bus 
trips around the country as well as trips to Hawaii, Mexico, and the 
Panama Canal. Family get togethers, particularly, Thanksgiving and 
Christmas celebrations were some of her favorite family times. She loved
 going to the Sheridan County Fair and always enjoyed visiting with 
friends. She just loved being around people and socializing. Doreen grew
 up and was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church in Angelus. After 
moving to Hoxie, Doreen attended the Church in Seguin, Kansas until 
Hoxie got a Catholic Church in 1949. She became a lifelong member of the
 St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, Hoxie, Kansas. She served as the 
treasurer of the St. Frances Cabrini Sodality for many years. 
 Doreen is survived by are her daughters Marilynn Nemes (Al) of 
Littleton, Colorado, Sheryl McIlnay (Joe) of Colby, Kansas; sons, Don 
Kennedy (Kathy) of Oakley, Kansas, Jim Kennedy (Deb) of Dodge City, 
Kansas, and Keith Kennedy (Pat) of Hoxie, Kansas; grandchildren, 
Kimberly Garfield (Aaron), Michelle Guthrie (Lee), Brian Kennedy (Lily),
 Dan Kennedy, Michael Kennedy (Mahalia), Melissa Johnson (Douglas), Dr. Brad
 McIlnay (Gretchen), Angela Holtz (Bobby), Amanda Juenemann (Michael), 
Cari Miller (Jay), Ryan Kennedy (Lacie), Adam Kennedy (Lorena), Jenna 
Sloan (Hale), Jill Schoendaler (Drew), and Kyle Kennedy (Jennifer); and 
thirty-five great-grandchildren.
 She was preceded in death by her husband, William Kennedy; son, 
Ronald Kennedy and great-grandson, John Juenemann; parents, Edward and Kathryn Wagoner; sisters, Marjorie 
Bachand, Eileen Nondorf, and Patricia Foster; and brothers, Wilfred 
Wagoner, LeRoy Wagoner, James Wagoner, and Kenneth Wagoner.
 A Mass of Christian Burial is planned for Friday, June 24, 2022, 
10:30 A.M., at the St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, Hoxie, Kansas. 
Visitation will be Thursday, June 23, 2022, from 1:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. 
with family receiving friends from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral
 home. The Vigil and Rosary Service will be held following the 
visitation and will begin at 7:00 P.M. The family suggests memorials to 
the Sheridan County Amusement Company, Sheridan County Benefit Walk or

Scott L. Thein, age 69 years, Of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on 
Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at Aster Estates in Great Bend.&nbsp; Scott was born 
in Seattle, Washington, and grew up in Sand Diego, California.&nbsp; He 
attended the University of California Berkeley where he graduated with 
high honors and was awarded a degree in philosophy.&nbsp; He then moved to 
New York City, New York, where he lived for over 40 years.&nbsp; It was there
 that he picked up a pencil and began to chronicle his experience of 
life within the warrens of the urban grid.&nbsp; Most recently Scott moved to
 Great Bend, Kansas to be among friends.&nbsp; He is survived by a brother 
Stephen Thein.

Scott was an artist, a melancholic philosopher and critic of the 
human condition.&nbsp; He had an analytical intellect that bordered on tragic
 genius.&nbsp; His art and his conversation revealed an obsessive need to 
expose inner connections and workings hidden beneath mundane social 
realities.&nbsp; Scott had a particular love and spiritual connection to the 
writings of Martin Heidegger.

In one exhibition, Scott used drawings, done on cast off shopping 
bags, to illustrate the famous philosopher’s way of interpreting the 
world.&nbsp; In his introduction to the series “Heidegger’s Ghost” he wrote, 
“… the shopping bag in becoming abandoned, useless, refuse, is becoming 
its own unique ontology which can then be transformed into a work of 
art.” Which is to say that when something or someone no longer fulfills 
its assigned function in the world and loses its labels it can be seen 
with new eyes. Scott embraced this sense of estrangement in his life and
 his art.&nbsp; He says in the same essay that our personal feelings of 
alienation “seem strange to us and in its strangeness we can picture it 
and we can draw it.”

A Memorial Celebration and scattering of cremated remains will be 
held on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at 10:30 AM on the campus of Aster 
Estates, 155 NW 10 Avenue, Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp; Refreshments and good 
conversation will be provided.&nbsp;

Kevin Otis Gross, 55, passed away Sunday June 19, 2022, at his 
residence in Larned, KS. He was born December 3, 1966, in Wichita, KS. 
the son of Vern “Bud” and Loretta Belisle Gross. An area resident, he 
was a construction worker in Dodge City.

Kevin was known for having a green thumb, growing anything especially
 tomatoes. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, music, cooking, fishing, 
anything outdoors and the Green Bay Packers. He especially loved his 
grand kids, kids and family.

On October 2, 1993, he married Brenda F. Musgrove in Great Bend, KS. She survives.

Other survivors include: his mother, Loretta Gross, Forreston, TX.; 
one son, Brandon Gross, Great Bend, KS.; two daughters, Tasha (Luke) 
Lloyd, Larned, KS. and Jacy (Seth) Gross, Larned, KS.; four brothers, 
Paul (Tina) Gross, Wichita, KS., Steve Gross, Spearville, KS., Danny 
(Karen) Gross, Schererville, IN. and Terry Gross, Miami, OK; one sister,
 Kimberly Gross, Forreston, TX.; six grandchildren, Anna Marie, Graydon

Jody Lee (Elwood) Black was born on July 23, 1963, to Robert Neal and 
Norma Jean (Michals) Elwood in McCook, Nebraska and gained her wings on 
June 20, 2022, at the age of 58. 
 She grew up on a farm outside of Wilsonville, Nebraska, with her 6 
siblings where you’d find her outside most of the time riding horses, 
tantalizing her sister Susan with cats, helping her mom and sisters 
dress chickens, and playing with the animals especially the German 
Shepard puppies her mom would raise. She avoided inside chores as much 
as possible. During the summer, it was her and younger brother Kyle’s 
job to bring the milk cows from the pasture every afternoon and take 
them back across the creek to pasture the next morning. She had many 
fond memories growing up on the farm and had said many times she wished 
her kids could have been so lucky. 
 She attended K-7th grade in Wilsonville baptized at the Christian 
Church of Wilsonville before transferring her membership to the United 
Methodist Church in Oberlin where her family moved in 1976. Her faith 
was very important to her and gave her great comfort during her years of
 dealing with kidney cancer. She participated in all sports and 
especially loved throwing the shot put and discus in track where she 
held the Decatur Community High School records for many years and earned
 two state medals before graduating from DCHS in 1981.
 On February 21, 1982, Jody married the love of her life and high 
school sweet-heart, Kenny Black. They lived their married life in 
Oberlin and were blessed with two amazing children, Chelsey, and Jobey. 
Vacations were something very important to her and she planned a family 
getaway each summer. She and Kenny also spent weekends at their trailer 
at Red Willow Lake north of McCook and entertained many relatives and 
friends over the years but the best memories were spent with their kids 
and especially their grandchildren, Paisley, Taydem, Kreightyn and 
Nashlynn. They had many fun weekends fishing, boating, skiing, tubing, 
going for walks and making s’mores.

Jody and Kenny loved to fish and 
their vacations without the kids usually included a fishing trip in 
places like San Francisco Bay, the Pacific Ocean and on the Columbia 
River in Oregon where they caught huge sturgeon. Jody loved to travel 
and persuaded Kenny to drive several times to the west coast to her 
favorite destination, The Oregon Coast and had also driven to the east 
coast to visit Cape Cod, New York City, Boston, and Canada accompanied 
by her sister Char who often traveled with them. She often invited 
younger sister Sandi or one of her nieces to accompany them on vacation.
 Kenny and Jody raised Labrador Retrievers for many years, and she 
loved spending weekends at HRC Hunt Tests and was especially proud when 
Kenny earned his first championship title. Paisley and Taydem went with 
them and decided they could do what Grandpa did needless to say she was a
 very proud Grandma when they both earned their started titles on their 
pups.

Jody had a career in banking that spanned over 40 years beginning
 her senior year of high school she started as a teller/bookkeeper and 
later a Consumer Loan Officer for Farmers National Bank in Oberlin where
 she worked until they sold. She and a coworker/ friend Mick Glaze 
successfully convinced the Atwood banker Barney Horton to start a branch
 of Farmer Bank &amp; Trust in Oberlin which she served as Branch 
Manager and COO for 18 years before deciding she needed a new challenge 
and began as a Residential Real-estate Lender at MNB Bank in McCook 
where she was working at the time of her death. She cherished the 
friendships she’d made while working at those institutions and stayed 
close over the years with many co-workers. Jody enjoyed decorating and 
flower arranging and loved to share her talent with others especially 
her family and friends. She was a very private person and her best 
friend of many years, Jane Gilliam, after many futile attempts finally 
gave up trying to get her to join social clubs.
 Jody is survived by her husband, Kenny Black, Oberlin, daughter, 
Chelsey and Leigh Zodrow, Arapahoe, NE, son, Jobey and Kylee Black, 
Phillipsburg, KS, grandchildren, Paisley, Taydem and Kreightyn Zodrow 
and Nashlynn Black. Siblings, Charlene Springer, Lebanon, NE, Mike 
(Jacque) Elwood Hickman, NE, Danny Elwood, Oberlin, KS, Susan Wilson,

David Edwin Reuber, 64, passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2022, in 
Atwood, Kansas. David was born to Eugene and JoAnn Reuber on January 
16, 1958. 
David was a beloved father, grandfather, son, and friend to all. 
David's passions in life were his kids, grandkids, his faith, playing 
cards, watching sports, cooking, reading, old westerns, and helping 
others. David owned and operated Reuber Construction for over 30 years 
and was always there to lend his advice to any project. 
He was preceded in death by his father Eugene Reuber. 
David is survived by his six children, Trisha (Bryan) Slough, of 
Lawrence, KS, Talia Brown, of Ottawa, KS, Tucker (Christie) Reuber, of 
Belton, TX, Tessa (Sam) Reuber, of Arvada, CO, Trinity (Bart) Ginther, 
of Dalhart, TX and Tasia (Andrew) Straker, of Carrollton, GA; 13 
grandchildren Stella, Frankie, Oscar, Skylar, Addyson, Grady, Cailynn, 
Kaylee, Kadee, Bridger, Leo, Silas, and Iyla on the way; his mother

David Edwin Reuber

Larry A. Nelson of Evergreen, Colorado, passed away on April 6, 2022,&nbsp; in Evergreen. Larry was born on January 22, 1938, to Martin A. and 
Gladys B. (Collins) Nelson of Ruleton, Kansas. Larry was the eldest of 
six siblings, Leonard, Janice, Judy, Joyce and Lynn. He attended school 
in Ruleton, Wichita and Goodland and graduated in 1956 from Sherman 
County High School. Although flying as early as 9 with his father, Larry
 earned his pilot’s license while attending high school.

Larry went to Kansas State University where he studied Biology and 
joined the Air Force ROTC program. He was a member of Acacia Fraternity.
 After graduating from Kansas State, he joined the Air Force where he 
became a pilot instructor. He instructed at Moody Air Force base in 
Georgia. Planes he instructed in were the T-37 primary trainer, T-33 
advanced trainer and the T-38. After 5 ½ years in the Air Force, Larry 
took a position with continental Airlines on the West Coast and flew 
Boeing aircraft 727 and 707 on continental and intercontinental flights.
 With a base transfer to Stapleton, Larry moved to Evergreen, Colorado, 
where he spent 50 years enjoying the mountains, fishing, hunting, and 
skiing. Larry retired from Continental Airlines in 1999 after 33 years. 
In retirement Larry purchased a 1946 J3 Cub aircraft where has no 
electrical system or radios. This was a similar airplane to the one his 
father, Martin taught him to fly during his high school years.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents.

Larry is survived by his wife Janice Park Nelson and his children, 
Mark, Todd (Sarah) Martine (Chuck Lee), Matt (Debra), and 7 
grandchildren; his siblings, Leonard (Lorna), Janice (George Robert 
Dempsey), Judy Marturano, Joyce (Richard Jones), Lynn (Cynthia), and 
Uncle Carl Nelson, and nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Riley Jo Bieberle,&nbsp;was born on June 17, 2022, in Merriam, Kan., the 
infant daughter of Ryan and Kelsey (LaRocco) Bieberle. She passed away 
peacefully with her loving parents by her side at Advent Health – 
Shawnee Misson in Merriam, Kan., on Friday, June 17, 2022.

While only here with us on Earth for a short time, precious memories 
were made with Riley Jo, surrounded by love from family both far and 
near. Through her passing due to complications due to Trisomy 18, she 
was able to bring awareness and add a perfect little face to the affect,
 not just a diagnosis. Her family is at great peace knowing she is in 
heaven, was greatly loved, and will forever cherish the 35 weeks and 
time in the hospital with her.

Survivors include her parents; grandparents, Amy Wright of Overland 
Park, Kan., Mike (Kathy) Crellin of Olathe, Kan., Glen and Starla 
Bieberle of Hoisington, Kan.; great-grandparents, Jim and Cindi LaRocco 
of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Viola Glanville of Great Bend, Kans.; and 
numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is preceded in death by a 
grandfather, Tony LaRocco; and great-grandparents, Leonard and June 
Wright, Harold Glanville, Gilbert Bieberle, Dolores and Jim Westbrook, 
and Grandma Perez.

A private family service has been scheduled. Memorials have been 
designated to the Choices Medical Clinic, in care of Nicholson-Ricke

Curtis Jay Schmidt, age 45, of Hays, Kansas, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2022, in Hays. He was born March 15, 1977, in Hays to Timothy and Esther (Burgardt) Schmidt. Curtis graduated from TMP-Marian High School in 1995 and obtained a MS from Fort Hays State University. On October 4, 2003, he married Amanda VanCampen in Victoria. Curtis was the Zoological Collections Manager at Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays. He was also an Adjunct Faculty Instructor at Fort Hays State University and Environmental Scientist at JTC Enterprises. He was a member of the Optimist Club of Hays currently serving as president, a member of the Kansas Herpetological Society having served as a past president and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays. Curtis truly loved his work and sharing his knowledge with others. His passion for the natural world came through with the enthusiasm he brought to teaching others, especially about reptiles, small mammals, and nature conservation.&nbsp; Being with animals and nature brought him great joy. He enjoyed caring for his animals and pets, walking his dogs, and he was often heard saying he was “Going Herping.” True to Curtis’s compassion and love for life through his passing he saved and enhanced numerous lives through organ, eye and tissue donation. Curtis is survived by his Wife, Amanda; daughter, Avery; step son, Jonathan VanCampen all of the home in Hays; his father, Timothy Schmidt of Hays; his sister, Leslie Karlin and husband David of Hays as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Esther and sister, Tammie; and a brother-in-law, Ted VanCampen.
