Leon Brungardt, age 67, died peacefully, surrounded by family on May 20, 2022, in the home of his son in Wichita, KS, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Leon was born on December 1, 1954, in Hays, KS, to Paul and Mildred Brungardt, and raised in Victoria, KS. He graduated from Victoria High School (Class of 1972) and Ft. Hays State University. Leon retired from a career in construction and woodworking.

Leon enjoyed life to its fullest. He loved his family and friends and was happiest when being of service to others. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, reading, playing scrabble, and was often found just relaxing.

Survivors include two sons, Aaron (Mikala), and Jared (Nettie), both of Wichita, KS; four sisters Carol (Chris) Cowger, Topeka, KS; Lois Yunker, Munjor, KS; Wanda (Ron Staab) Brungardt, Victoria, KS; and Paula (Patrick) Zwenger, Victoria, KS; and five grandchildren, Landon, Brielle, Ruhiyyih, Samira, and Leon Brungardt.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mildred, two brothers, Steve and Mark, and one brother-in-law, Tom Yunker.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, September 24, at 11 am, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Walker KS.

Sylvester W. “Bud” Habiger, 90, passed away September 4, 2022, at 
Brookdale Senior Living in Great Bend. He was born December 10, 1931, at
 Beaver, to Francis “Frank” &amp; Sophia (Meyeres) Habiger. He married 
Sandra Lue Brougher October 5, 1957, at Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp; She died 
September 30, 1998.

A longtime Great Bend resident, Bud moved from the family farm out in
 Western Kansas. He was the shop manager for various fishing tool 
companies in the oilfield, retiring as the Kansas Area Manager for N.L. 
Acme Tool. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima
 Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Post #862 and VFW Post #3111. He 
was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Korean 
Conflict.

Survivors include, three sons, Kerry Habiger and wife Julie of 
Stilwell, Kan., Kenyon Habiger and wife Kelley and Karl Habiger and wife
 Theresa all of Great Bend; a brother, Walter Habiger of Kalvesta; a 
sister, Alice Cohoon of Jetmore; four grandchildren, Marcus Habiger 
(Rebekah), Andrew Habiger (Giovana), Colby Habiger (Katie) and Caitlyn 
Lott (Michael); a step granddaughter, Conor Bird; and four great

 Logan Manor at the age of 96.&nbsp; He was born April 12, 1926, in Phillips

Patricia Jean Ludes, 82, passed away surrounded by loved ones on 
September 4, 2022, at River Bend Assisted Living, Great Bend, Kansas. 
She was born on December 11, 1939, at Hays, Kansas, to Earl and Estella 
“Cobbie” (Cobb) Rogg. Patricia married Richard “Ed” Ludes June 6, 1959, 
at Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; He passed away on July 9, 2016.

Coming to Great Bend in 1961, Patricia was a homemaker and also 
worked at Treasure Chest Bookstore for several years. She was a 
passionate reader, loved animals and enjoyed fishing whenever she could.
 She was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick’s 
Catholic Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Aimee Jostrand of Dallas, Tex. and 
Jennifer (LeAnne) Ludes of Omaha, Neb.; five great grandchildren, Jaden 
Jostrand, Max Jostrand, Piper Jostrand, Amanda Ludes, and Evan (Sarah) 
Ludes; one great-grandchild, Hazel Ludes; and two sisters, Barbara Maloy
 of Colo. And Debra Rogg of Minn. She was preceded in death by her 
husband and parents.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Services 
are pending with Bryant Funeral Home.

Patricia Jean Ludes

Norma Lee Deyoe-Swart, 94, of Oakley, KS, died Saturday, September 3, 
2022. She was born October 30, 1927, in Garden City, KS, to Chet and 
Marie (Dufrin) Beatty. 

On February 7, 1946, Norma married Robert Deyoe. 
The couple lived in Ulysses, KS, where Norma worked as an artist, and 
they attended the Episcopal Church of Ulysses. Norma was also a 4-H 
leader, board member on the Kansas Arts Commission, and a founding 
member of the Wheat Hearts. Norma made many lifelong friends through 
her work with these organizations, including Lloyd Swart, who was a 
fellow leader on the Kansas Wheat Commission board. 

After the passing of
 both of their spouses, Norma and Lloyd began dating in 1991, and were 
married on December 22, 1994, in Ulysses. They spent 27 years together 
in Oakley, where they were active in the Oakley Shrine Club, K-State 
Alumni tour group, and were members of the Oakley Country Club. Norma 
was active with Logan County 4-H, a board member of the Logan County 
Extension. She enjoyed participating in the Oakley Chapter EX PEO, 
"Sing-a-Longs", doing Aqua-sizes at the Oakley city pool and was devoted
 to the Oakley United Methodist Church. Norma was full of love, life and
 laughter...which she shared with everyone around her. 
Norma was preceded in death by her parents; brother Alayne Beatty and husband Robert Deyoe. 
She is survived by her husband Lloyd; children, Eddie (Sheila) Deyoe, 
Dennis (Sheryl) Deyoe, Diana Lightcap and Bev (Dennis) Ragland; 
stepchildren, Linda (Brent) Logan, Lori (Troy) Sporer and Ryan (Karen) 
Swart; grandchildren, Velvet Randolph, Nikki Siler, Cherry Hale, Dylan 
Gill, Dimitra Becker, Matt Deyoe, Wade Deyoe, Kelsey Jones, Spencer 
Childress, Savanah Sporer, Abbey Elliott, Madison Swart and Marlie

Randal “Randy” Wayne Conrad, 72, of Natoma, Kansas, passed away 
Friday, September 2, 2022, at Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell, 
Kansas.

Randy was born February 28, 1950, in Concordia,
 Kansas, to Auldin and Marion (Wineland) Conrad. He grew up and worked on
 the family farm near Alton, Kansas and was a 1968 graduate of Natoma 
High School. He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering Degree at Kansas 
State University. Shortly thereafter, he obtained his small-aircraft 
pilot’s license.

Randy worked as a Mechanical Engineer at Ditch 
Witch in Perry, Oklahoma before moving back with his own family to 
assist his parents on the farm. He farmed full-time for over 30 years. 
In more recent years you could be sure to see his beloved sidekick, 
Frasier, with him.

He was passionate about antique 
cars, motorcycles and racing. He was a member of the KAR (Kansas Antique
 Racers) group and was a regular as a participant and spectator at the 
races. Randy enjoyed spending time with his special friend, Sandy and 
her family, going to the races, mowing, or simply working on the many 
vehicle projects he had on-going. He will be greatly missed by his 
family, racing family, and his close friends in and around the 
community.

Survivors include his special friend, Sandy 
Hudson of Osborne; daughter Laura Conrad (Lounis) of Fontenay sous Bois,
 France; daughter Katie Yusuf (Arman) of Seattle, Washington; son Jacob 
Conrad (Laurel) of Olathe, Kansas; brother William (Bill) Conrad of 
Alton; grandchildren Jacob, Gabriel, Hazel; nieces Tammy Lutz (Ken) and 
Tori Dinkel (Darian); great-nieces and nephews Bailey, Bethany, Braxton,
 Blake, Aiden and Isaac.

Devon Joseph Mick departed this world tragically too soon, at the 
young age of 25, on Friday, September 2, 2022, in Plainville, Kansas. He
 was born to Kelly (Boller) Hrabe and Damien Mick on March 21, 1997, in 
Hays, Kansas. Devon was engaged to Jailen Plummer; the couple was 
blessed with two sons: Bentley and Staley.

Devon was 
raised in Plainville and he graduated from Plainville High School with 
the class of 2015. Shortly after high school he went to work in the oil 
field. He started as a floor hand and later moved to a rig operator for 
Chito’s Well Service. Devon met the love of his life, and the mother to 
his children, Jailen, in 2016. His wild nature kept his fiancé, friends,
 and family on their toes with his love of big burn outs and the need 
for speed (although that sometimes got him in trouble). His lead foot 
and love of American muscle would inevitably lead him to do it 
repeatedly. 

Devon was a family-centered man; he adored his sons, 
shopping for RC cars or hot wheels with his brother and tinkering on car
 projects with his uncle and best friend, Jameson. He was always 
surrounded by family or friends, and it was always accompanied by good 
music, good food, and a lot of laughs. His free spirit was felt by those
 who knew him. He found God and the beauty in His creation by doing 
things he enjoyed like fishing, cruising around, and spending time with 
the people he loved the most.

Although Devon will be 
sorely missed by all who knew him, his love and memories will be with us
 forever. May we surround the family with love and cherish Devon’s 
memories by living like tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, put our foot through 
the floor every now and then and leave burnouts on the hearts of the 
people we encounter. And may we be encouraged to cherish the ties that 
bind, be quick to forgive and slow to anger, and live our lives to the 
very fullest.

Dorothy Jean Miller, 84, passed away July 24, 2019, at Good Samaritan
 Society, Lyons. She was born January 11, 1935, at Ogallah to Henry 
&amp; Carie (Elliott) Nejdl. She married Harold S. Miller on November 
18, 1953, at Wakeeney. He died June 16, 1990.

A previous Great Bend resident, Dorothy was a nurse aide at CKMC in 
the pediatrics and psych wards until retired. She was a member of King 
United Methodist Church, American Legion, the Arthritis Foundation and a
 past member of the VFW in Great Bend.

Survivors include, one son, Ron Miller of Highland Ranch, CO; one 
daughter, Sandy Mull and husband David of Great Bend; one 
daughter-in-law, Bernadette Miller of San Diego, CA; and four 
grandchildren, Marcus Mull, Luann Omega and husband Michael, Dustin 
Miller and Brandon Miller. She was preceded in death by her parents; 
husband, Harold Miller; son, Larry Miller; brother, Archie Nejdl; and 
two sisters, Alice Gabel and Ellen Rockwell.

Graveside memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, 
September 6, 2022, at Great Bend Cemetery with Pastor Mike Munz

Dorothy Jean Miller

G. Patrick Wanker was born August 16, 1939, to Gernald Mertis and Pauline Gladys (Close) Wanker. He passed away on September 2, 2022, at the Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital at the age of 83 years.

Patrick attended the WaKeeney Grade School and graduated from the Trego Community High School.

He attended the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and was a member of ATA, KTA, NRA, and Hays Sportsman Club. He married Charlotte R. Schneider on October 19, 1967, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Upon graduation, Patrick worked for a seismograph company from Texas. After working for several years, he decided he would open a grocery store.&nbsp; It was opened on June 26, 1961. It later became known as Pat’s Grocery and Sporting Goods, selling beer, ice, fishing, and hunting supplies and guns. The store was probably the first “convenience store” in Kansas. He sold the store in 1981.

In 1984, Pat, and two partners began Wes-Kan Towers, LLC. which constructed and erected two-way radio communication towers. When cell phones were introduced, the towers were also used to house cell phone equipment which provided coverage for a large area. The company was sold in 2000.

Being interested in the oil industry, Pat and a partner started Nor-West Kansas Oil, LLC in 1985.&nbsp; They began leasing ground, drilling oil wells, and operating them in Northwest Kansas. When Pat’s health began to fail, it was decided to sell the company, which was sold in July 2022.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife (Charlotte) of the home and one sister, Carely (James) Yaeger of Branson West, MO. He also leaves to mourn many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Those preceding him in death are his parents, Gernald and Pauline Wanker; his brother, David A. Wanker, his grandparents Patrick and Gladys Close, Frank and Mary Wanker, and a great nephew Tyler Lotz.

Pat enjoyed hunting, fishing, and shooting trap competitively, attending NASCAR races and NFL football. Pat will be greatly missed by his family, business associates, and friends.

Services will be on September 6, 2022, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be on September 5, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00 at Schmitt Funeral Home.

Dan Friess, 82, died Thursday, September 1, 2022, at Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph, Wichita.

He was born February 20, 1940, on the family farm near Ransom, the son
 of Mathias and Mary “Mayme” (Roths) Friess. He was a 1958 graduate of 
Ransom High School and a long- time Spearville resident. In addition to 
farming, he owned and operated D &amp; R Auto Service, as well as worked
 at the Right Coop, Crustbuster, Orscheln Farm &amp; Home, and Carquest.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church and 3rd Degree member 
of the Knights of Columbus Council 1539 both in Spearville. He enjoyed 
woodworking, gardening, and watching sports, especially the Kansas City 
Royals.

On June 3, 1961, he married Rita Hoffman at Hays.

Survivors include: his wife of 61 years, Rita, Spearville; their 6 
children: Carolyn “CJ” Friess and companion Randy Bilbeisi, Fairfield, 
Virginia; Roberta Crawford and husband Curtis, Wichita; Ruth Shank and

Jarold "Jerry" William Boettcher of Manhattan, age 82, formerly of 
Beloit, died surrounded by family on Sunday, August 21, 2022, at Stormont
 Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Barbara; children Chris 
Boettcher (Lynne) of Benton, Melinda Grafel (Dan) of Oberlin, Andy 
Boettcher (Wendy) of Dayton, Ohio, and Miranda Grummon (David) of 
Shawnee; grandchildren Kade, Brittan, Isabel, Aidan, Drew, Dylan, Ella, 
Josh, Addyson, and Isaiah; and sisters Janet Wesselowski of Wichita and 
Kathy Aros (Richard) of Tucson, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Zelma 
Boettcher, and one sister, Sylvia Wolf of Quinter. Jerry was born on May
 19, 1940, in Beloit. After graduating from Beloit High School in 1958, 
he continued his education at Kansas State University.

He married the love of his life, Barbara, on December 30, 1961, 
and graduated with a degree in Nuclear Engineering in 1963. He began 
considering graduate school, and was admitted to MIT's Sloan School of 
Management where he earned a Master's Degree in Industrial Management in
 1966. He worked in finance in New York City, then in Kansas City, 
Missouri. In 1979, he switched gears and moved his family to Beloit to 
help his father with the management of Boettcher Supply. He worked as
 President and CEO of Boettcher Enterprises until his retirement in 
2007. He and Barbara then moved to Manhattan.

Jerry loved many things - education, his K-State Wildcats, dogs, 
working on and racing cars, and traveling, but what he loved most was 
his family. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and 
will be missed terribly.

In memory of Jerry, contributions may be made to a few 
institutions that were close to Jerry's heart: Purple Paws 2nd Chance 
Rescue in Manhattan, First Presbyterian Church of Beloit, or towards a 
Beloit High School scholarship for graduates attending Kansas State 
University. The family will host a Celebration of Life service on 
Saturday, October 15 at 11 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 321 E. 
Main St., Beloit, followed by a gathering to enjoy food, laughs and

Hays Medical Center. She was born on October 26, 1943, at Great Bend, to

Blondie was a lifetime Great Bend resident, having worked for Barry 
Tree Service and the Salvation Army. She loved bright colors and enjoyed
 sharing gifts with family and friends. Blondie had a heart of gold and 
especially loved spending time with her family, pets and nature.

Survivors include, a sister, Evon Gallant of Great Bend; a brother, 
David M. Blair, Sr., of Leonardville, Kan.; and numerous nieces and 
nephews, including, Shawnda Gallant, Tony Morgan and Barry Gallant; She 
was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Nathine Barry; a
 brother, Howard Barry; and two half-sisters, Una Helmric and Diane 
Kirkham.

Visitation will be held from Noon to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 
7, 2022, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 
6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, 
September 8, 2022, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Reverend Dick Ogle 
presiding. Interment will be in the Hoisington Cemetery.

been designated to Golden Belt Humane Society, in care of Bryant Funeral

Dr. Don Dirksen, DDS, 86, finished his final marathon at his home in 
Wichita and went to be with the Lord August 31, 2022.&nbsp; He was the 
first-born son of Martin H. and Dorothy (Harrison) Dirksen on August 14,
 1936, in Hutchinson.

Don graduated from Enterprise Academy, Enterprise, KS, Hutchinson 
Community Junior College, and the University of Nebraska College School 
of Dentistry.&nbsp; He practiced Dentistry 33 years and was a lifetime member
 of the American Dental Association. &nbsp;Don enjoyed family time, reading, 
baseball games, classical music, running, attending the symphony, and 
much more. Just last year he was running 6-8 miles regularly. Don was a 
member of Seventh-day Adventist Church, Hutchinson. On November 25, 
1959, he married Jalayne Chappel, in Hutchinson.

Don is survived by:&nbsp; his wife of almost 63 years, Jalayne of Wichita;
 children, Mike Dirksen, Mark Dirksen, both of Wichita, Ann Baus (Mark) 
of La Crosse, and Jill Dirksen of Chicago; brother, Martin Harvey 
Dirksen (Mavis); sister, Carol Dirksen (Regis Yeager) all of Hutchinson;
 five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 11:30 am Friday, September 9, 2022, at 
Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will follow in Memorial Park

Marvin J. Kaiser, 81, Hays, died Thursday, September 1, 2022, at HaysMed.

He was born October 12, 1940, in Great 
Bend the son of Joe L. and Regina (Debes) Kaiser.&nbsp; In 1958, he graduated
 from Odin High School and later served in the U.S. Army Reserves during
 the Cuban Missile Crisis.&nbsp; He worked as a manufactured housing 
executive, and for the majority of his career worked for Marlette Homes,
 now Clayton Homes.&nbsp; He had a love for farming and working cattle.&nbsp; On 
December 30, 1961, he was united in marriage to Bernice M. Rziha in Odin,
 and they were married nearly 61 years.&nbsp; 

He served on the Claflin School
 Board of Education, Kansas State Special Olympics Board, coached 
Claflin Recreation softball and baseball, McPherson American Legion 
Baseball, and Catholic school basketball.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Marvin’s memberships 
included St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, St. Nicholas Third Degree
 Knights of Columbus Council # 10044, and the Bishop Cunningham Fourth 
Degree Assembly #282.&nbsp; During his 65 years in the Knights of Columbus, 
Marvin held many offices including:&nbsp; Faithful Navigator, Grand Knight, 
District Deputy, State Officer, Former State Advocate, and as Membership
 Director, started 16 new councils.&nbsp; He loved his grandchildren, enjoyed
 spoiling them, and was proud to be called Great Papa.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife Bernice of 
Hays, a son: Brian Kaiser and wife Lynne of Wichita, a daughter: Paula 
Beck and husband Andy of Hays, a brother: Gilbert Kaiser and wife Kathy 
of Kingman, two sisters: Jolene Rziha and husband Jim of Great Bend,

Jerold “Jerry” Wayne Briney, 86, Hays, died Friday, September 2, 2022, at his home.

He was born April 22, 1936, in Cullison,
 Kansas, the son of Wayne E. “Salty” and Nellie V. (Rice) Briney.&nbsp; Jerry 
graduated from Cullison High School in 1954 then continued his 
education, graduating from Pratt Junior College and Fort Hays State 
University.&nbsp; After college, he served in the U.S. Army.&nbsp; For 25 years, 
Jerry worked as an insurance adjuster.&nbsp; He married Ruth E. Jones on 
August 18, 1957, in Dodge City, and they celebrated 65 years of 
marriage.&nbsp; He was lifetime member of the FHSU Alumni Association and a 
40-year member of the Elks Club.&nbsp; He was an Elvis fan, enjoyed classic 
country music, and his hobbies included coin collecting, hunting, and 
fishing.

Survivors include his wife Ruth of 
Hays, a son: Gary Briney of Hays, two daughters: Lori Briney Swift of 
Niceville, FL and Cheryl Kinderknecht and husband Gilbert of Ellis, a 
granddaughter: Jennifer Bruggeman and husband Tate of Clay Center, and 
his first great grandchild due in December.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother: Frank H. Briney.

Mary Lou Smith, 96, passed away Friday, September 2, 2022, at Country Living in Larned.

She was born November 7, 1925, to Walter B and Maud Romig Rumsey.

On December 1, 1944, she married Virgil John Smith. Virgil died May 27, 1977.

Mary Lou was a lifelong area resident, a farm wife and homemaker. She
 was an elder and active member of the Presbyterian Church, PEO Chapter 
CB, and a Santa Fe Trail Museum Board Member. She was a good cook and 
enjoyed horseback riding and painting.

Mary Lou is survived by: a son, Richard Vance (Susan) Smith, Larned; 
six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary 
Rumsey, Wisconsin, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; two brothers;
 Walter Rumsey and Reed Rumsey; and her son; John David Smith.

Mary Lou Smith

Marlys Joan Bernard, 82, of Hutchinson, died on August 31, 2022, at 
Hospice House. She was born October 7, 1939, in Little River, to Glenn 
and Marjorie (Clarke) Stowe.

Marlys moved to Hutchinson in 1958 and graduated from Adela Hale 
Business College. Her first job was with the county attorney’s office in
 Hutchinson as a legal secretary. Marlys the worked for Dick Rome and 
Time Chambers in their private practices. She went back to work in the 
county / district attorney’s office in 1984, as its first full-time 
diversion coordinator. Marlys was a member of the Kansas Victims 
Assistance Association and the board of directors for Sexual Assault and
 Domestic Violence Center of Hutchinson, serving as secretary, 
treasurer, and president. She retired as victim-witness coordinator for 
the Reno County district attorney’s office in 2007, after 23 years.

Marlys was a caring friend. She always sent cards for birthdays, 
anniversaries, and special occasions. She was also famous for being the 
“Cookie Queen” of Reno County. Marlys baked cookies for everyone that 
she loved. Those cards and cookies will be missed.

In 1999, Marlys received an award from the Kansas Coalition Against 
Sexual &amp; Domestic Violence and the Sexual Assault &amp; Domestic 
Violence Center of Hutchinson as a “Mother of Our Movement”, in 
recognition of contributions made to lay groundwork for advocates, 
victims, and survivors. She received the Liberty Bell Award from the 
Reno County Bar Association in 2000, in recognition of her contribution 
to the legal profession in Reno County.

Marlys is survived by: her husband of 51 years, Jewell R. Bernard; 
daughters, Debra J. Gardner (Greg), Kristi L. Bernard; son, Jewell R. 
Bernard; sister-in-law, Freddean Stowe; son-in-law, Charles Weible; 
niece, Krista Smalley; grandchildren, Grant Gardener (Megan), Brittany 
Gardner, Sierra Gardner, Erika Sutton (Mike), Brandon Bernard (Meagan), 
Aimee Bernard, Arrin Bernard (Molly); and seven great-grandchildren.

Celebration of life will be 10 am Thursday, September 8, 2022, at 
First Congregational Church, Little River. Burial will follow in Bean 
Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 am to 8 pm Wednesday, with family 
present from 5 to 7 pm at Elliott Mortuary.

 </figure>Marlys Joan Bernard, 82, of Hutchinson, died on August 31, 2022, at 
Hospice House. She was born October 7, 1939, in Little River, to Glenn 
and Marjorie (Clarke) Stowe.Marlys moved to Hutchinson in 1958 and graduated from Adela Hale 
Business College. Her first job was with the county attorney’s office in
 Hutchinson as a legal secretary. Marlys the worked for Dick Rome and 
Time Chambers in their private practices. She went back to work in the 
county / district attorney’s office in 1984, as its first full-time 
diversion coordinator. Marlys was a member of the Kansas Victims 
Assistance Association and the board of directors for Sexual Assault and
 Domestic Violence Center of Hutchinson, serving as secretary, 
treasurer, and president. She retired as victim-witness coordinator for 
the Reno County district attorney’s office in 2007, after 23 years.Marlys was a caring friend. She always sent cards for birthdays, 
anniversaries, and special occasions. She was also famous for being the 
“Cookie Queen” of Reno County. Marlys baked cookies for everyone that 
she loved. Those cards and cookies will be missed.In 1999, Marlys received an award from the Kansas Coalition Against 
Sexual &amp; Domestic Violence and the Sexual Assault &amp; Domestic 
Violence Center of Hutchinson as a “Mother of Our Movement”, in 
recognition of contributions made to lay groundwork for advocates, 
victims, and survivors. She received the Liberty Bell Award from the 
Reno County Bar Association in 2000, in recognition of her contribution 
to the legal profession in Reno County.Marlys is survived by: her husband of 51 years, Jewell R. Bernard; 
daughters, Debra J. Gardner (Greg), Kristi L. Bernard; son, Jewell R. 
Bernard; sister-in-law, Freddean Stowe; son-in-law, Charles Weible; 
niece, Krista Smalley; grandchildren, Grant Gardener (Megan), Brittany 
Gardner, Sierra Gardner, Erika Sutton (Mike), Brandon Bernard (Meagan),

Marlys Joan Bernard

R. Jolene Cook, 80, passed away September 1, 2022, at Hospice House, 
Hutchinson. She was born December 22, 1941, in Sterling, KS, to Carl 
Thomas and Rosetta Emmegene (Hunt) Mitzner.

On July 7, 1961, Jolene married Weldon A. Cook, in South Hutchinson.&nbsp;
 They shared over 60 years of marriage, prior to his passing on March 
28, 2022.

Jolene owned the restaurant AT&amp;O in South Hutchinson, for many 
years.&nbsp; In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, floral arranging, and 
could fix just about anything.&nbsp; Jolene had an amazingly creative and 
artistic mind.&nbsp; Some of her favorite things were black coffee, crossword
 puzzles, and vanilla ice cream.&nbsp; Jolene dedicated many years to 
researching her family history and was a former member of the Reno 
County Genealogical Society.

Jolene is survived by:&nbsp; her children, Troy (Susan) Cook of Nickerson,
 Tami Cook of South Hutchinson, Thom (Sharon) Etzler of Hutchinson; 
grandchildren, Heather "Tweed" (Jesse) Cartwright of Hutchinson, Tyler 
"Goose" (Hannah) Cook of Nickerson, and Ryder Cook of Hays; 
great-grandchildren, Max Elam, Lucy Elam, Emily Cook, Camden Hummel, and
 Willow Hummel; sisters, Twila Blew and Janice Runyon; brothers, Steve 
and David Mitzner; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by:&nbsp; her husband; parents; and siblings, 
Carl Dean Mitzner, Carolyn Vester, Donna Hearn and Gary Dewayne Mitzner.

Cremation has taken place and a private family burial will be 
scheduled at a later time. Friends may sign the book from 1 to 5 p.m. 
Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at Elliott 
Mortuary.
