Danielle Gay Shewey was the firstborn of Ward Shewey, Jr. and Elaine (Bell) Shewey. She was born September 25, 1962, in WaKeeney, Kansas. Her family lived in Hill City, Kansas, for the first eleven years of her life. They then moved to the farm in rural Graham County, and she attended Morland Elementary School. 

She graduated from Morland High School in 1980, and then went on to Colby Community College. She attained her degree in business Administration with an emphasis in accounting and attended an additional year.

After college, Danielle returned to the farm and worked at Farmers and Merchants Bank. She had most recently been working at both the Jamboree Food Store and with Homestead food services where she really loved her work and the people she worked with. Her true passion, however, was the church and its members. She made the church bulletin every Sunday and was the church treasurer for many years.

Danielle recently become an aunt. Her nieces and nephews were the light of her life. She loved them all. In her spare time, she enjoyed watching cooking shows and HGTV.

Danielle was proceeded in death by her parents. 

She leaves behind her brother Leslie, wife Kristen, and their children Charley, Olivia, Dexter, and Henry; and brother Christian, wife Amanda, and children Walker and Holden.

Timothy Leon Burbach, formerly of WaKeeney

Timothy Leon Burbach, formerly of WaKeeney, passed away on May 24, 2023 at Meridian Health and Rehabilitation Center in Wichita from the effects of Parkinson’s disease. He was born September 16,1952; Tim was 70 at the time of death.

Tim grew up on a farm by Collyer, attended grade school in Collyer and graduated from Trego Community High School. He earned a certificate in diesel mechanics in Denver. He worked as a mechanic, in the oil fields, and as a welder. He loved fishing, watching a good game of baseball and westerns. He was enjoyed with classic muscle cars and races.

He is preceded in death by both parents, Warren and Darlene Burbach. 

He is survived by two sons, Shawn Burbach, WaKeeney, and Trent Burbach of Neosho, Mo.; a sister, Sandra Burbach, Larned, and a brother Rick Burbach of Collyer; and several grand and great-grandchildren.

A family graveside memorial will be held at Union Cemetery in Collyer.

Micheline Georgette Coen, formerly of Elkhart

Micheline Georgette Coen, 95, formerly of Elkhart, KS, passed away on May 23, 2023 at Peterson Assisted Living in Osage City, KS. Micheline was born in Mareuil-sur-Ay, France on September 11, 1927 to Victor and Louise Poulard. She grew up in a happy home with two sisters and three brothers, working in the vineyards around their home and alongside her brother, Elie, at a local pharmacy. During World War II, Micheline met an American soldier, Lloyd Coen. After a yes, some cold feet, and two extensions on his deployment (at Lloyd’s request), Micheline and Lloyd were united in marriage on June 8, 1946 in Mareuil-sur-Ay, France. Micheline moved to the United States at the age of 19. The couple began their life together a few months later in Elkhart, Kansas, which she grew to love as much as the French countryside. When their children were younger, Micheline stayed with them at home. She later worked 11 years in the school lunchroom for Elkhart public schools and then the Elkhart Telephone Company. Micheline was also a talented seamstress. Contrary to most people’s thoughts about French cuisine, Micheline didn’t enjoy cooking very much. However, her beef bourguignon (usually reserved for company) was delicious and she shared her unique way of dressing sliced tomatoes with her new community when she moved to Osage City.

Her whole life she was a social butterfly and almost religiously attended the Senior Center noon meals in Elkhart, usually followed by games of cards. She particularly loved to play pitch. Micheline was also a member of the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority for many years. Micheline was very frugal and an extremely hard worker, though you would never hear her complain. That said, Micheline and Lloyd always made time for vacationing in the summer with the kids. Together, the family traveled most of the United States, camping and exploring the great outdoors. In January of 2020, Micheline was awarded the Morton County Pioneer Award which she received with all her family present. Preceding her in death are her parents Victor and Louise Poulard; husband Lloyd Coen; sisters Jeanne Poulard and Rolande Poulard; and brothers Roger Poulard and Elie Poulard. Micheline is survived by her four children, James ‘Jim’ Coen (Kathy), Monique Moore (Gary), Robert Coen (Dorita), and David Coen (Karen); brother Jean Poulard; eight grandchildren, Trina Magness, Tonia Magness, Jenny Hageman, Justin Coen, Rachel Landers, Kaitlyn Haake, Kellye Coen, and Kristin Coen; and 17 great-grandchildren. Following cremation, Micheline will be laid to rest at Elkhart Cemetery in Elkhart, KS.

Cody James Steffen, age 32, a former Hays resident passed away Friday, June 2, 2023, at Kansas City, Missouri.

Cody James Steffen was born August 17, 1990, and joined his mother in Heaven on June 2, 2023.

Cody was born to Linda and Dan Steffen in Hays, Kansas, where he resided prior to moving to Kansas City. He was very active in youth sports, including soccer, football, basketball, and excelled in baseball. 

He attended Fort Hays State University and Johnson County Community College, studying audio engineering. He loved music, video games, as well as all sports with his favorite teams being the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals and the North Carolina Tarheels. Along the way, Cody made many lifelong friends in Hays and Kansas City.

Cody is survived by his son Kingsley James Steffen; his daughter Karma Luella Love Steffen, both of the Kansas City area; his father Daniel James Steffen and wife Tammey, of Hays, KS; his paternal grandmother Norma Samsel (Dans Birthmother) of Morristown, TN; and his aunts and uncles. Liquetta Joyce “Joy” Cole, age 83, passed away on Monday, June 5, 2023, at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on May 17, 1940, in Scott City, Kansas, the daughter of Roger and Doris Frost Heim.&nbsp; 

A lifetime resident of Modoc, Kansas, she was a postmaster and horsemanship instructor.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas, American Quarter Horse Association, High Plains Study Club, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and was a past William Carpenter Board member. &nbsp;She was also a 4-H Leader.

On November 27, 1959, she married Jessie Lee Cole in Modoc, Kansas.&nbsp; He passed away on May 14, 2018, in Westmoreland, Kansas.

Survivors include her daughters Trina and Russell Harlow of Prosper, Texas, Robyn Lane of Modoc, Kansas, sister Shirley and Charles Griffith of Scott City, Kansas, five grandchildren, Hunter and Rachel Harlow of Waco, Texas, Andrew and Meganne Harlow of Van Alstyne, Texas, Peri Lane of Jay, Oklahoma, Lexi and Spencer Dills of Grove, Oklahoma, Mat and Chloe Fielders of Dallas, Texas, six great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Vernon Heim, and sisters Marjorie Riggs and Carol Hassler.

Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2023, with the Rev. Kyle Evans presiding.

Edward Lake “Dusty” Jones, MD, 88, passed way on June 6, 2023, at Medicalodges, Great Bend, Kan. He was born on March 21, 1935, in Wellington, Kan., to Thomas and Grace (Sydebotham) Jones. 

On August 30, 1956, he married Barbara Blount in Larned, Kan. She passed on April 20, 1998. He then married Debbie (Ahrens) Clarke on August 17, 2003. She survives.&nbsp;

A 1953 graduate of Dodge City High School, Dr. Jones attended the University of Kansas for both his undergraduate and medical degree. There, he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha – Betta Gamma chapter, Phi Beta Kappa – Alpha chapter, Alpha Omega Alpha – Alpha chapter, Phi Mu Alpha – Xi chapter and was accepted to the Order of DeMolay – Dodge City chapter.&nbsp;

Dr. Jones then volunteered to serve his country in the United States Coast Guard, where he was the chief medical officer at the Indian Hospital in Ft. Yuma, Ariz., with his duty site being San Diego during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was honorably discharged in 1963 but remained enlisted in the Army Reserves until around 1980.

After his military service, he returned to Kansas as a general practitioner before diving into his long-time interest of pathology at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. Dr. Jones then made his way to Great Bend, becoming a pathologist, working with Dr. Jerry Sayler and Dr. Rex Degner, at Central Kansas Medical Center (CKMC/St. Rose) for over 46 years, until he retired in 2015. But his care and expertise were not limited to the one hospital – he served as consulting staff throughout central and northwest Kansas, including Hays Medical Center. During these years, he served as the Medical Director of Laboratory, Chief of Medical Staff from 1980-1982, and a member of the Board of Directors from 1980-1982 and 1997-2006. Dr. Jones also served on multiple committees, including Medical Staff Executive Committee, Chairman of Infection Control Committee, Chairman of Utilization and Medical Care Committee. While holding these positions, he also was a member of the Kansas Medical Society from 1969–2006, College of American Pathologists starting in 1970, and both the American and Kansas Society of Clinical Pathologists from 1969-2006, where he served as the Kansas chapter President from 1982-1984.

Along with his many rolls in the medical field, Dr. Jones continued to serve the state as the coroner for the 20th and 24th Judicial Districts until retirement in 2019. He also was a medical advisor and part time instructor at Barton Community College from its inception until 2000.

He loved the arts - particularly singing and theater, traveling, nature, and especially helping others.

Survivors include his wife Debbie of the home; two sons, Matthew Jones, of Great Bend, Kan., and Thomas (Marsha) Jones of Overland Park, Kan; two daughters, Kimberly (Craig) Vink of Great Bend, Kan., and Sheila Jones of Great Bend, Kan.; six grandchildren, Chelsea (Trent) Mermis, Abbey (Eric) Swenson, Allie Jones, Grant Jones, Dawn (Josh) Martin and Scott Vink; five great- grandchildren, Madilynn Mermis, Mac Mermis, Olive Swenson, Remy Martin, Evan Vink and one additional great-grandson due in July; and a sister, Evelyn Sanborn of Walnut Creek, Calif. Also surviving are Debbie’s five sons, Brian (Brandi) Clarke of Wichita, Kan., Kevin (Kim) Clarke of Great Bend, Kan., Steven Clarke of Great Bend, Kan., Chris (Katie) Clarke of Kansas City, Mo., and David Clarke of Great Bend, Kan.; and four grandchildren, Weston Clarke, Evan Clarke, Kelsey Clarke, and Kinsley Clarke. 

He is preceded in death by his first wife of 43 years, Barbara; a granddaughter-in-law, Jovanna Vink; and two sisters, Elizabeth Caldwell and Gayle Vann.

Visitation will take place from noon to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, 2023, with family receiving guests from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, June 9, at the First Presbyterian Church, Great Bend, Kan., with Reverend Kathleen Luke presiding. &nbsp;Inurnment will follow at Larned Cemetery, Larned, Kan. Clifford C. Bizek, 90, of Timken passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2023. He was born on September 3, 1932, on the family farm at rural Timken, Rush County, Kansas to Charles J. Bizek and Edith L. Seelye Bizek. 

“Cliff” grew up and absorbed American rural values that were part of the fabric of that day including faith in Christ, family, service to others, kindness, good manners, humility, respect, and thankfulness. He remained joyful, outgoing, and interested in everyone all his days. He helped work the family farm and developed a life-long love of the land, farming, machinery of all kinds and animals (especially dogs) from his farmer and machinist dad. Although his military service, careers, love of flight and travel took him around the world, he made time to continue active farming with his dad and then on his own.

&nbsp;As a young boy he was intensely fascinated with flight and air travel. His dad built “Cliff” a metal model airplane with functioning details including a spinning propeller. It remained fixed to the fence surrounding the family farm home for many decades with its propeller spinning away in testament to Cliff’s early love of flight. He graduated from La Crosse High School in 1949 and earned his first college degree in agriculture from Kansas State University in 1954. &nbsp;He joined the United States Air Force Aviation Cadet program in 1955 at Lackland AFB, Texas.

His primary flight training was performed at Spence Field (Polecat 47-T-34 &amp; T-28). Basic flight training was flown at Williams AFB, Arizona and Laughlin AFB, Texas. He completed all-weather school and F-94-C training at Moody AFB, Georgia. Next assignments included Newcastle Airport, Delaware with the 97th FIS flying F-94Cs followed by assignment to Hamilton AFB, California (1958) with the 84th FIS flying F-89Js. Finally, he ended his service with an assignment to Goose Bay AFB, Labrador, flying F-89Js with the 59th FIS. Cliff served during the Cold War and played an important role in protecting the United States and our Allies from the Soviet threat. He and other pilots were required to scramble and get planes into U.S./Canadian airspace in minutes when the sighting of an enemy plane or UFO was reported. The national defense planes he flew were armed with the latest tech of the day including nuclear weapons.&nbsp;

In&nbsp;1960 Cliff resigned from the USAF to attend Wichita State University where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering in 1966. While working on his engineering degree he joined the Kansas National Guard flying F-86Ls and F-100Cs and Fs. Major C. Bizek attended Squadron Officers School at Maxwell AFB, Alabama, and the Fighter Weapons Instructor school at Nellis AFB, Nevada (F-100).

After a brief career as a petroleum engineer with Sunray DX Oil Company, Cliff’s love of flying won when he joined American Airlines (AA). Based in Chicago with American Airlines, he transferred to the Illinois Air National Guard to continue his service. He flew with AA until retirement flying the BAC 111, 727, 707, DC9, DC10, 757 and 767 out of Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Miami. In 1992 he retired out of Miami after flying internationally to Europe and South America for several years. He taught himself Spanish when he started flying to South America to better appreciate the cultures. During retirement he split his time between residences in Dallas, Texas, St. Petersburg, Florida, La Crosse and rural Timken, Kansas.

Clifford was predeceased by his parents and four sisters, Thelma Jean Bizek, Sherla Lee Bizek Furgason, Patricia J. Bizek Raikes and Janet Elaine Bizek Barker. He was also predeceased by his companion of many years, Joy New. 

He is survived by his sister Charlotte I. Bizek Biays, who provided loving care for him as his memory failed over the last several years. While he did not have children of his own, Uncle Clifford was always present in the lives of his family, rejoicing at happy times and providing care and support during sad times. He was much loved and will be greatly missed by his nine nieces and nephews, his twenty-six great nieces and nephews and his growing numbers of great-great nieces and nephews.

Clifford maintained his membership at the La Crosse United Methodist Church for most of his life although he attended worship in many different churches as he moved and traveled.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 14, 2023, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. at the Janousek Funeral Home, 719 Pine Street, La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp; Services for Clifford C. Bizek are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at the Janousek Funeral Home followed by graveside Masonic and military services with interment at the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas. on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, 
Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on June 11, 1957, in Liberal, Kansas, the daughter
 of John Booth and LaVerne Rogers Pearson.&nbsp; A resident of Scott City, 
Kansas, since 1998 moving from Grinnell, Kansas, she was a CNA, waitress,
 and homemaker.

She was a member of the AQHA and National Cutting Horse Association.&nbsp; Pam loved all animals, especially her cats.

On April 7, 1990, she married Frank Rebarchek in Garden City, Kansas.&nbsp; He survives.

Survivors include her husband Frank Rebarchek of Scott City, 
Kansas, son Dr. Terrance Hampton of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, daughter Danielle Baughan of Colorado Springs, Colorado, mother LaVerne Pearson Matney of Garden City, Kansas, sister Iris Graham

Kansas, Jim Pearson of Hominy, Oklahoma, and Jerry and Robin Pearson

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, father John Pearson, stepfather Fred Mateny, and three brothers-in-law.

Memorial graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2023 at the Orion Cemetery in Gove County, Kansas with the Rev. Rocky Schmied presiding.

Inurnment will be in the Orion Cemetery in Gove County, Kansas.

 of John Booth and LaVerne Rogers Pearson.&nbsp; A resident of Scott City, 
Kansas, since 1998 moving from Grinnell, Kansas, she was a CNA, waitress,
 and homemaker.She was a member of the AQHA and National Cutting Horse Association.&nbsp; Pam loved all animals, especially her cats.On April 7, 1990, she married Frank Rebarchek in Garden City, Kansas.&nbsp; He survives.Survivors include her husband Frank Rebarchek of Scott City, 
Kansas, son Dr. Terrance Hampton of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, daughter Danielle Baughan of Colorado Springs, Colorado, mother LaVerne Pearson Matney of Garden City, Kansas, sister Iris Graham 
of Salina, Kansas, three brothers, Jack and Teri Person of Meade, 
Kansas, Jim Pearson of Hominy, Oklahoma, and Jerry and Robin Pearson 
of Lakin, Kansas.&nbsp;She was preceded in death by her grandparents, father John Pearson, stepfather Fred Mateny, and three brothers-in-law.Memorial graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2023 at the Orion Cemetery in Gove County, Kansas with the Rev. Dolores E. Rohr, age 72, of Goodland passed away Saturday, June 3, 2023.&nbsp; Dolores was born June 13, 2023 to Joseph and Gertrude (Nondorft) Fleckenstein in McCook, Nebraska.&nbsp; 

Dolores grew up in Dresden, Kansas and attended school in Jennings. After graduating high school she attended the Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland. 

On July 17, 1969 she married Robert Rohr in Goodland; to this union their daughters, Carrie and Kimberly were born.

Dolores worked as the Sugar Hills Golf Club Manager for 10 years and Rasure Lumber for 15 years.&nbsp;She enjoyed gardening, fishing, cooking, going to the lake, Christmas, Denver Broncos, and most of all spending time with her family and friends.

Preceding her in death are her parents, and brother Joseph.

She is survived by her husband Bob of Goodland; daughters Carrie (Darol) Peter and Kimberly (Jarod) Smades of Goodland; grandchildren Evan and Witton Peter and Jaron and Kollins Smades; sister Geri Lampe and brother Leonard Fleckenstein; and many more family and friends.

Grace Marie Simmering went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 4, 2023. &nbsp;She was born on Aug. 4, 1926, at the family farm northwest of Kanorado, Kansas to Andrew and Martha (Juhl) Pettijohn, the fourth child of eight. &nbsp;

She attended a country school until moving to Goodland for high school where she worked to earn room and board. &nbsp;There she met John Simmering and was married in 1945 while he was on leave from the Navy. To this union, three children were born, David, Linda (who was born on her birthday), and Daniel.

Grace enjoyed being a homemaker and took pride in keeping a neat and tidy house. &nbsp;She enjoyed baking and sharing it with friends and neighbors. &nbsp;She mowed her own grass and had a garden well into her 80s. &nbsp;She loved flowers and would tell us to give her flowers when she was alive so she could enjoy them and not when she died.

Grace and John enjoyed playing cards and belonged to a card club for many years. &nbsp;They also had a camper and went on many trips with the Good Sams Camping Club. Grace never drove a car and walked to town frequently, carrying groceries a mile home.

Grace was a member of the First Baptist Church, Goodland and was the church treasurer and later moved her membership to the First Baptist Church in Ness City. &nbsp;She loved the Lord, rarely missed a service until the last three years. &nbsp;When her son David died, she left her home and moved to Ness City to be close to her daughter. &nbsp;She continued to play cards, sew potholders, and table runners or scarves for friends and family, doing all the work by hand. &nbsp;He has said for many years that she was ready for God to take her home; now He has.

Those preceding her in death are her parents Martha and Andrew Pettijohn; husband John Simmering, son David Simmering, three brothers, Alvin, Wilbur, and Robert, and three sisters, Dorothy Cowan, Joan Sipes, and Betty Buxton.

She leaves behind daughter Linda Foos (Gary), son Daniel Simmering (Angie), nine grandchildren, Laura (Curt), Debra (Levi), Dana, Jana, Scott, Bryan (Jen), Jason (Ashley), Jared, and Jonathon (Ashlee), 11 great-grandchildren, Haley, Dean, Brogan, Alysson (Dakotah), Ashley, Amy, Sarah (Dakota), Ayden, Jaxson, Briar and Sage; great-great grandson Jason; brother Conrad Pettijohn (Carol), sister-in-law Joy Pettijohn, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral service will be held at the First Baptist Church, Ness City on Friday, June 9, 2023, 10:30 a.m. &nbsp;Burial in the Goodland Cemetery on Friday at 3:00 p.m Central Time. &nbsp;Viewing will be held at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

&nbsp;A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, June 10, at 10:30 a.m. in the St. John Catholic Church, Logan, with Father John Schmeidler officiating. The service will be streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page. &nbsp;Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery. &nbsp;

A rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Ernest W. Kulich, 94, of Sylvan Grove, KS, passed into the next life in the early morning hours of Friday, May 26 in Lawrence, KS. He was born February 5, 1929 on the family farm to Joseph O. and Barbara M. (Hynes) Kulich. He married Dulcie (Lawson) Kulich in 1956.

Ernie farmed full time for more than 70 years, beginning after his eighth-grade year at Orbitello Country School, when he had to forgo further formal education. More hands were needed on the farm after his father became disabled, a brother left for military service, and his beloved sister Pauline died at age 16. Life became his teacher, and he was a good student of it. He enjoyed learning about farming and ranching ideas, other people and cultures, and faith, having decided to follow Jesus in 1957 and becoming a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sylvan. He said he felt closest to God when outdoors in creation, whether planting a newly terraced field or welcoming a newborn calf.

In his younger days, Ernie played baseball on the men’s town team. Later he and Dulcie enjoyed competing for strikes and spares in bowling leagues, playing cards with friends and slamming down that trump card to take the last trick, and, most of all, going to waltz and polka dances. It was at a dance that he first met Dulcie, and from that time on, he never stopped delighting in whirling around the dance floor with the love of his life.

Ernie actively sought to serve his country, his community, and his church. He served two years in the Navy, 1953-1954, was a member of the Sylvan American Legion Post #359, served on the local school board and county conservation/ASCS boards, was a member of the Kansas Livestock Association, and helped with the local 4-H Club and county fairs.

He served as a church elder, including 17 years as Clerk of the Session, and was a member of Gideons.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents and all six of his siblings: Joe, Helen, Josephine, Adolph, Pauline, and Archie. 

He is survived by his wife Dulcie, now of Lawrence, KS; his son Steve [Anne], Shanghai, China; daughter Sheryl Kulich Potts [Joe], Lawrence, KS; and four granddaughters: Christy Kulich, Gehrden, Germany; Amy Kulich, Lӧrrach, Germany; Lauren (Potts) Hahn [Axel], Filderstadt, Germany; and Kelsey Potts, Denver, CO, as well as niece Rebecca (Ringler) Tounsand Hawk, Salina, KS; sister-in-law Shirley (Dobsky) Kulich, Holyrood, KS, and many other dear relatives and friends—all who remember Ernie as a loving and dedicated father, a good-for-laughs and caring grandfather, and a warm-hearted and generous neighbor who loved helping others.

Clair Louis Legere, 3 months from 100 years, died peacefully in his sleep on Memorial Day, May 29, 2023, at Graham County Hospital. Clair arrived the second of ten children on September 10, 1923, in Macomb, Illinois, to Louis and Leta (Beghtol) Legere. With the encouragement of Great-Uncle John Legere, the family moved to Kansas when Clair was 13. The family settled on a farm south of Hill City.

 He attended elementary school at Millbrook School. After a long walk home from school, the Legere kids were treated to homemade bread, butter, and jam. Clair then attended Hill City High School and graduated in 1942.

Clair enlisted in the army in January 1943 and was slotted for duty as a tank crew member. One day upon leaving the mess hall, Clair noticed a bulletin board post requesting volunteers for a tank recovery unit. Clair joined the 458th Ordnance Evacuation Unit. He served as a driver/mechanic on an M25 Tank Transporter, commonly nicknamed the Dragon Wagon. His unit went into European theater battle fields where he assessed and recovered combat damaged tanks, armed personnel carriers, and the machines of war. He felt fortunate to serve with the men of the 458th. Among the honors he received but seldom discussed were a battlefield promotion to sergeant, Bronze (BSS) and Silver (SS) Stars, and the French Legion of Honor. He received an honorable discharge in November 1945. He especially appreciated receiving a Quilt of Valor and being selected for an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. He loved his country all his life.

After WWII, Clair returned to Hill City and worked as a mechanic. On Thanksgiving Day in 1946 he went on a date with Eleanor Nickelson. They married on Thanksgiving Day 1947. Clair and Eleanor settled in Penokee and lived there for the rest of their lives, celebrating 65 years together. They purchased the Penokee grocery store in 1948, and it became a local landmark. Daughter Madella arrived in 1953 and a second daughter, Donella, followed in 1957. Running the store became a family endeavor. Clair and Eleanor also started a photography business. Many area people had their wedding and family photos taken by Legere’s Photography. In 1970, they closed the store and began Legere’s Refrigeration. When the Legere Refrigeration white van arrived with the big white dog, you knew about anything could and would be fixed.

His quiet faith manifested through service. He served as a Deacon in the Penokee Methodist Church. After the closing of the Penokee church, he became an active member of the Hill City Presbyterian Church. Clair served in leadership roles while always making himself available for maintenance, repair, and building upkeep.

His service continued with various school boards for 55 years. These included school boards in Penokee, Morland and at the Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland. Memberships with the Masons, Eastern Star, Shriners, American Legion, and the VFW counted for another 50 years. Clair helped establish the fire station in Penokee and served as a firefighter from 1968 until his last fire run on October 24, 2013. At the age of 90, he still considered fire-fighting a privilege. Clair promoted Penokee and served 55 years on the Millbrook Township board.

Clair and Eleanor welcomed family and friends into their home through the years, leading to many cherished memories. Eleanor preceded Clair in death as did his parents, Louis and Leta Legere. Also preceding were brothers George, Major, Don, Bob, Jon Larry, and Scotty, as well as sisters, Jane Jansen, and Mary Ann Littlejohn.

Survivors left to cherish Clair’s memory include his sister, Joyce Gibson, Atlanta, GA, and sister-in-law Libby Legere, Hays. Clair’s daughters are Madella (Doug Williams) Garden City, and Donella Belleau, Hill City, (Don Dinkel, Hays). Clair had five grandchildren, Jeremy (Kellie) Belleau, Norton, KS; Michele (Greg) Albrecht, Lawrence, KS; Tara (Shane) Harper, Ingalls, KS; Sabra (John) Leomo, Honolulu, Hawaii; and Christi (Cody) Keiswetter, Lenora, KS. Continuing the legacy are 10 great-grandchildren, Emma and Grace Belleau; Katherine, Isaac, Granten and Solomon Harper; Kainoa and Zealand Leomo; Kaylen and Jaxen Keiswetter; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Clair loved, took pride in, and supported his family and friends. Also included in his circle were pets, birds, and plants. Clair’s friends often speak of him as, “One of the good ones.” He lived a full and wonderful life.

Dana Kirk Randel, 72, died June 3, 2023, at his home in Emporia. He was born May 19, 1951, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Ira Frank and Donna Marie (Jessen) Randel. &nbsp;

On May 27, 1972, he married Lana Beth Scheuerman in Baldwin, Kansas.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Lana Randel; sons Jens Randel, and Joren Randel and wife Kristy; grandchildren; and a sister, Kris Randel-Waldren.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, with family to greet friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 9, 2023, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Galen Boehme presiding. Burial will follow in Lone Star Cemetery, rural Bison, Kansas.

Franklin G. Foos, 94, passed away on June 3, 2023, at the Cedar Village Care Center in Ness City, Kansas. &nbsp;He was born on March 27, 1929, on the farm near Bazine, Kansas, the son of Ferdinand and Mary (Reichel) Foos.

He was a lifetime resident of Ness County where he worked as a farmer and stockman. &nbsp;Franklin was a member of the Bazine Methodist Church, the Bazine Coop, and a former member of the Bazine Lions Club and Bazine School Board. He was very active in the community and supported many local events. &nbsp;Franklin enjoyed coyote hunting with his buddies and attending school events for his grandchildren. 

On April 23, 1949, he married Jeanette (Brack) in Bazine, Kansas.

Survivors include his wife Jeanette Foos; three sons, Gary Foos (Linda) of Ness City, Eric Foos (Becky) of Brownell, and &nbsp;Craig Foos (Tammi) of Bazine; one daughter, Brenda Schuler (Rod) of Lyons; one sister, Evelyn Beltz of Ness City; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson. &nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Ruth Bowman; two brothers-in-law John Bowman and Sidney Beltz; and one nephew, Ricky Beltz.

Funeral service will be on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, 10:30 a.m. at the Bazine Methodist Church, Bazine, Kansas. &nbsp;Burial in the Bazine Cemetery. &nbsp;Friends may call at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on June 6, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Phyllis Jane Mendenhall, age 90, died on June 3, 2023 at Rhode Island Suites in Ransom, Kansas. &nbsp;She was born on July 21, 1932 in Hugoton, Kansas the daughter of Isaac L. and Eunice J. (Hawk) Harvey.

Phyllis was a member of the United Methodist Church in Utica and worked at the Grisell Memorial Hospital, the Utica Post Office and the Citizen State Bank of Utica. &nbsp;But mostly she will be remembered as the Avon “Ding Dong Lady”.

On April 9, 1950, she married Dale Duane “Dewey” Mendenhall in Utica. &nbsp;He preceded her in death in February of 2002.

Phyllis is survived by her daughters Lonna Mendenhall of WaKeeney and Jane Urruty of Buffalo, WY; son Kyle Mendenhall of Muskogee, OK and adopted son, Ger Kattouw of the Netherlands; sisters Letha Babcock, Utica and Wanda Boxberger, WaKeeney. &nbsp;S

She is preceded in death by her husband Dewey, four brothers, Larry, Calvin, Allen, and Fred; one sister, Mary Etta Parks, and her parents.
