John Calvin Haverfield of Russell Springs passed away on July 4, 2023. Calvin was born in Scott City on July 28, 1958. One of five children born to Larry Luke Haverfield and Elizabeth Dawn Haverfield, Calvin took great pride in carrying on his late father’s legacy through his hard work and dedication on the family ranch, working alongside his lifelong business partner, his little brother, Jay Haverfield. 

He was an example of true stewardship to his land and cattle, working closely with Audobon of Kansas and the Defenders of the Wildlife. Calvin married the love of his life, Lillie Herrera, on May 15, 1992, and together they raised four children: Rene Junior, Krystal Rene, MyKel John, and AmmahRye Jeslie.

Calvin and Lillie were blessed with 12 grandchildren who kept them busy between basketball games, wrestling and various activities. Calvin was a loving and devoted husband and father who put his family first. He was active in his community taking on roles such as volunteer firefighter, young men’s leader and active member of the LDS church.

Calvin was welcoming to all with his authentic and gentle persona, warm smile, contagious laugh and wonderful sense of humor. He always gave the time and attention to make people feel genuinely loved and cared for, forever offering a listening ear and helping hand. You could catch Calvin in his spare time with a book in hand. He loved reading and his collection of books.

Calvin treasured his faith and lived to serve his family and community, he was a Bishop in the Scott City ward and will be dearly missed by his church family. Calvin’s presence will be fondly remembered by his loved ones in the Kansas sunrise as it stretches across the ranch he loved most, in the sounds, the smells, and the colors across the vast and beautiful Kansas prairie. Calvin was preceded in death by his father, Larry Haverfield and other extended family members. John Calvin Haverfield

Michael Clark Whisler, 67, of Russell, died on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at his home in Russell.

Michael was born on Jan. 5, 1956, in Russell, the son of Francis Clark and Patricia Lew (Brockett) Whisler. He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School. After high school, he attended Hutchinson Community College and the University of Kansas. Michael moved around for several years before settling in Arizona where he worked for the forestry department building trails and fighting fires.

About 20 years ago, he moved back to Russell, where he made his permanent home and was a self-employed painter in Russell and the surrounding area. He enjoyed being outdoors, hiking, collecting rocks, geology, golf, woodworking, fishing, growing sunflowers, and playing and listening to music.

His surviving family includes his daughter Jessica Cunningham and husband Brent of Glen Elder; sister Susan Albers and husband Fred of Overland Park; and grandchildren Drew, Tanna and Bailee Cunningham. He leaves a niece, Holly Albers; nephew Jordan Albers; and a great-nephew, Maddox, all in the Kansas City area. He also leaves special aunts and many dear cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A gathering service to celebrate Michael’s life will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12 at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell.

Betty L. Ryan, 88, departed this life on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, surrounded by family after struggling with illness. She was born on a farm north of Hoxie on Oct. 21, 1934, in Sheridan County, the daughter of Obie Alton and Florence Bell Long Martin. &nbsp;

Betty was the middle child and praised her mother for making a nice, loving home for her and her older brother and younger sister. Her grandparents, whom she loved deeply, lived close to the family farm. At age 12, her father was injured, which required her to start working with her mother hanging wallpaper. While she was in high school, she continued to work at local cafes.

Through a cousin of hers, she met Carrol “Andy” Anderson of Penokee.&nbsp; They fell in love and were married on July 22, 1950, by a Methodist preacher where she went to Sunday school as a child. They moved to Colby, and four daughters were born to them—Dana, Delinda, Debbie and Denise.&nbsp; She enjoyed nothing more than making a good home for her family.&nbsp; In 1962, the family moved to Scott City, a place she called home.&nbsp; In 1965, she accepted the Lord as her personal Savior and was baptized.&nbsp; She committed her entire life to serving the Lord and became active in the church throughout those years. She loved singing, teaching, serving on the church board and being a hostess to many.

In 1977, she found herself single and in a working world. During that time, she met Eugene Ryan and they were married on Feb. 17, 1984, in Scott City. This year they celebrated 39 years of marriage. She worked at the Security State Bank in Scott City for 23 years and retired in 1999.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church and a past member of the Church of the Nazarene both of Scott City.

Survivors include her husband - Eugene P. Ryan of Scott City; three daughters - Dana &amp; Steve Edwards of Scott City, Debbie Kirk of Enid, Okla., Denise and Steve Wishon of Lawrence; one son-in-law - Max Edwards of Scott City; one sister - Bea Rasmussen of South Charleston, W.V.; one half sister - Esther and James Armknecht of Dighton; nine grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three step-children - Dave and Jeanie Ryan, Debbie and Jon Bratt, Melody and Melvin Rogers, 25 step-grandchildren and many step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter - Delinda Edwards; one brother - Bob Martin; one sister - Mary Ann Martin; one son-in-law - Don Kirk; one step-son - Mike Ryan; one step-daughter - Linda Morris; one step-son-in-law - Larry Morris; and one step-granddaughter - Heidi Morris.

The funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, at the First Baptist Church in Scott City, with Rev. Kyle Evans presiding.&nbsp;

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be written to the Hopes Closet in care of Price &amp; Sons Funeral Home, PO Box 553, Scott City, KS 67871.

Clarence Justin “Bud” Redman, age 84, of Syracuse, died July 3, 2023, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. He was born on March 17, 1939, in Emporia, the son of Clarence Christopher and Helen Elizabeth (Sutton) Redman. Bud grew up in Emporia and graduated from Emporia High School. He continued his education at Emporia State University, where he earned a master’s degree in business education and an education specialist degree and was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity.

Bud married Ann Watson on Aug. 21, 1965, in Syracuse. He taught business classes at USD 494 Syracuse High School from 1962 until 1999 when he retired. He owned Specialty Photo, a sign shop, and painting business for many years. He was a member of and served on many boards including the Chamber of Commerce, USD 494 Syracuse Board of Education, Park Board, National Business Teachers Association, and KNEA. He enjoyed running the school concession stand, volunteering at the Veteran’s Memorial at the Syracuse Cemetery, and continually helping others in the community. Survivors include his wife, Ann, of their home; son, Chris Redman and wife Monica of Olathe; daughter, Pam Hubbard and husband Wes of Wichita; sister, Barbara Younger of Emporia; five grandchildren, Michelle Langehennig and husband Dustin, Jace Coleman, Andie Coleman, Jayden Davis and Tara Redman; and two great-grandchildren, Madden and Rory Langehennig. Bud is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Helen Redman; and sister, Elaine Hedrick. Memorial graveside service will be at a later date at the Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Emporia. Clarence Justin 'Bud' Redman

Phil A. Maddux, 88, died on July 5, 2023, at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin. He was born on Nov. 9, 1934, in Garden City, the son of Anson C. and Christabelle (Downing) Maddux. In his early years, his family lived in Holcomb before moving to the family farm north of Deerfield, where he graduated from high school in 1952. He married Arlene (Chain) Webb on March 22, 1990, and spent the remainder of his life spoiling her.

Phil knew from a young age that farming was his passion. He was able to continue farming after high school with his father and uncle on the family farm and later continued the tradition with his two sons and their families. He joined the Garden City Army Reserve in 1958 and remained a member until 1963, receiving honors as an Outstanding Instructor in 1961. In 1983, he was one of four farmers who purchased Sante Fe Motors in Deerfield, which was renamed Deerfield Ag, to allow local farmers to continue to purchase equipment and parts locally. One would rarely see Phil without his furry four-legged companions. He had many dogs over the years and each one was always his self-proclaimed best dog in the world. He was known by many of his love for dogs and how well his four-legged friends were treated, oftentimes riding in the passenger seat of the pickup, getting fed from the table, and even having fans and air conditioning where they slept so they didn’t get too hot. His dogs often had claimed the passenger seat of his pickup as their own and if you were to ride with him, you may end up with a golden retriever in your lap with their head out the window because you were, after all, sitting in their seat. The one thing that Phil loved more than his dogs and farming was his family and people. He absolutely adored his wife and family and traveled many miles over the years watching his kids and grandkids play sports and participate in other activities. He believed in an honest day’s work, and you would struggle to find someone who could work harder. Although laziness was one of his pet peeves, he was still willing to help anyone that needed it and believed that you should love everybody. He never met a stranger and would sit and visit with anyone anywhere, sometimes for much longer than they had probably expected as he certainly had the gift of gab. He always wanted everyone to be “happy, happy, happy.” Phil is survived by his loving family including his wife, Arlene Maddux; two sons Kirk (Kim) Maddux and Kent (Diane) Maddux; one daughter Jana (Randy) Dietz; stepson Jerrad (Kim) Webb; step-daughter Jessica (Colby) Katz; sister LeRoyce Maddux; six grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, grandson Garrett Maddux, great-granddaughter Raelyn Maddux and his brother Lyle Maddux. Curtis Watts, 76, died July 5, 2023, at Clara Barton Hospital ER, Hoisington. He was born Aug. 22, 1946, in Bennington, the son of Raymond L. and Phyllis J. (Collins) Watts. Curtis graduated from Bennington High School in 1964.&nbsp;

On July 7, 1973, he married Roberta Ott, in Gypsum.&nbsp;

Curtis was the owner and operator of Watts Siding for many years. He later decided to change occupations and took up truck driving, a profession he thoroughly enjoyed. He drove over the road for many years for Kindsvater Trucking out of Dodge City, retiring in 2012. He also loved driving a harvest truck for Hoffman Farms and was looking forward to the upcoming fall harvest. Curtis and Roberta loved traveling in their RV, spending time in Branson, and trips with the Newmar Kountry Klub. They were also lifetime members of the Good Sam Camping Club. When they weren’t traveling they enjoyed attending the Golden Belt Community Concerts and cheering on his favorite Nascar drivers, especially the Earnhardt teams.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Roberta Watts of the home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Phyllis Watts.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m., Monday, July 10, 2023, at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, with Pastor Larry Schumacher presiding.

Randall R. “Randy” Schmidt, 67, Hays, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, July 4, 2023.

He was born Jan. 15, 1956, in Hays, the son of Alfred L. and Mary K. (House) Schmidt.&nbsp; While growing up, he attended St. Joseph Grade School, Kennedy Middle School, Thomas More Prep High School, and later earned a bachelor’s degree from Park College, a master’s degree from Webster University, and attended Oklahoma State University.

From 1973 to 1996, Randy served in the U.S. Air Force, where he enlisted five ranks and commissioned five ranks, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.&nbsp; He was a Desert Storm veteran and served as a civilian in Korea, the Republic of Georgia, Bosnia, the Netherlands and Kosovo. Randy was a weapons systems officer, a member of the Mach 2 Club, and a flight instructor at the Air Force Academy. He enjoyed flying, motorcycle riding, RV trips, Florida’s Space Coast, and in April, achieving his goal of seeing the Holy Land.&nbsp; Randy loved his family, especially his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his son, Aaron Schmidt (Kara Holland) of Fredericksburg, Va., two daughters, Dr. Katherine Schmidt of Queens, N.Y., and Lauren Daniels (James) of Glen Allen, Va., three brothers, Larry Schmidt (Melea), Dan Schmidt (Connie), and John Schmidt (Dana), all of Hays, a sister, Karla Ruder (John) of Plainville, three grandchildren, Bennett Daniels, Luka Schmidt, and Aubrey Daniels, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Mike and Joe Schmidt.

The Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 12 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Richard Daise officiating. Military honors by the Hays VFW Post 9076 Honor Guard will follow.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday and from 9:30 until 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.

Cheryl Long, 77, of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Banner Elk, N.C., passed away at Boca Regional Hospital on June&nbsp;&nbsp; 17, 2023.

Born Nov. 4, 1945, in Hays, to Lester and Beulah (North) Irvin, Cheryl spent her childhood outside of Hays on her parents' farm, where her never-ending love of the land was rooted. She graduated from Hays High School in 1963. It was there and at Hays United Methodist Church that she and her future husband, James, began to share their lifelong passion for music.

She then attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, graduating in 1968 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance. On July 21 of that year, she married James Allen Long—a marriage that lasted just one month shy of their 55th anniversary.

After graduate studies in Bloomington, Ind., Cheryl and Jim moved to Broward County, Fla., in 1973 where they resided until they relocated to Palm Beach County in 2013. It was then they began to split their time between homes in Boynton Beach and Banner Elk.

During their 40 years in Broward County, Cheryl established a private voice studio, becoming a highly sought out teacher, adjudicator and clinician. Many of her students went on to achieve notable successes as teachers/educators, performers in regional and Broadway musical productions, and at national and international concert venues.

Following retirement as a voice teacher in 2013, Cheryl successfully channeled her artistry into the painting medium, particularly watercolor. Her unique expressions were on display in galleries in Banner Elk.

Cheryl had a deep abiding faith, which was daily reflected in her actions with those who came to know and love her. Proceeding in her death were her parents and her brother, Stanley. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, James, sons Craig, his wife Carolyn and precious granddaughter Megan of Boynton Beach, and Douglas of New York City, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial Service will be at Church of the Palms, 1960 N. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach at 11 a.m. July 15. A subsequent service will be at Banner Elk Presbyterian Church at a later date. Carolina Hinojos Baca Ortega, 88, died on Monday, July 3, 2023, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She was born on Oct. 10, 1935, in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico, the daughter of Manuel Hinojos and Elena Baca. Carlolina married Alfanso Fajardo Valdez on May 4, 1951, in Juarez, Mexico, who later passed away in 1961.

On May 20, 1967, she married Jesus Garcia Ortega in Juarez, Mexico. Together their family consists of three sons Fernando Fajardo, Oscar and Ginger Ortega, Octavio and Shannon Ortega. Carolina had 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Together Carolina and her family moved to Aurora, Ill., in 1969. She worked at Georgia Pacific for nine years alongside her husband, Jesus. They moved to Garden City in 1977 where she worked as a housekeeper and in the fields during the summers alongside her sons. Later she worked as a custodian at First United Methodist Church. She also took care of and spent many days with her grandchildren. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, puzzles and cooking for her family and friends. She also loved dancing, watching the birds in her bird feeders and garage sale shopping. Although what she loved to do most was spending time with her beloved family and cherished grandkids and great-grandkids.

Carolina is preceded in death by her parents Manuel Hinojos and Elena Baca, sisters: Maria Elena, Margarita, Nieves, Guadalupe, brothers: Raphael, Jesus Alfredo. Also one son Arturo Fajardo, and one daughter Carolina Fajardo.

A Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Friday, July 7 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 8 also at St. Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Jacob Schneider as Celebrant.

Joel Alexis Hernandez, 19, passed away on July 4, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born in Great Bend, to Alberto Hernandez and Veronica Leyva.

Having lived in Great Bend and later Wichita, Joel spent his time watching TV, playing music and video games, and spending time with family.

Survivors include his mother of the home; his father; two brothers, Alberto (significant other, Aylin) Hernandez of Great Bend and Alan Hernandez of Wichita; aunts, Esna (Victor) Banuelos of Odessa, Texas and Anna Maria Leyva of Mexico; uncles, Oscar (Diana) Leyva and Jesus (Maribel) Leyva, all of Great Bend; and numerous cousins. He is preceded in death by a sister, Arely Hernandez; and maternal grandparents, Oscar and Anna Maria Leyva.

Walter Raymond Biggs, 84, of McDonald, Kan., died Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at Citizens Medical Center, in Colby. He was born on the family farm in Rawlins County, to Milton and Eva (Eicher) Biggs on March 22, 1939.

Walter served in the U.S. Navy from 1958-1961. Upon his return from the service, he lived in Colby. Walter was united in marriage to Bonnie Christiansen on Feb. 23, 1962. They moved to Colorado, then Sharon Springs, Kan., before moving to the farm near McDonald in July of 1962 and eventually building a new house in 1979.

Walter spent his years farming and ranching in Rawlins County. He was a big supporter of 4-H and enjoyed helping the children and attending the county fairs. He donated all the lemonade for the 4-H snack stand at the Thomas County Fair for many years.

Walter loved working on his antique tractors. He would take them to Colby for the fair parade each year and also entered them in tractor shows. He also enjoyed watching and collecting John Wayne movies. Walter is survived by his wife Bonnie and son Monty. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and five sisters. A graveside service will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 8, at Beulah Cemetery, Colby. Walter Raymond Biggs

Deloris Jean Ziegler Wasinger, 86 of Garden Grove, Calif., passed away on Feb. 8, 2023, at home.

Deloris was born to Henry and Edith (Hetzel) Ziegler in Trego County on Nov. 15, 1935. At the age of 3 the family moved from Collyer to Grainfield.&nbsp; Deloris attended Grainfield Grade School and graduated for Grainfield High School in 1954. &nbsp;She then attended St. Anthony’s School of nursing in&nbsp; Hays, where she received her R.N. degree. Deloris practiced nursing for 47 years and retired in 2004.

On Oct. 12, 1957, Deloris married Harry Wasinger at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Grainfield. They shared 57 years of marriage; they lived in Hays and Manhattan, Kan., until 1960 when they moved to California. Harry passed away on Dec. 8, 2014. They were blessed with three daughters; Brenda, Cindy and Pam. &nbsp;

Deloris’ hobbies included painting pictures, working outside in her yard, taking care of her many orchid plants and attending her grandchildren's events. &nbsp;

Deloris is survived by her three daughters: Brenda and Ken Hammerton of Germantown, Tenn., Cindy and Gary Peck of Seal Beach, Calif., and Pam and Tracy Taylor of Orange, Calif. Eight grandchildren: Jessica (David) Sawyers, Andrea (Jim) Rusiewski, Jackie (Nacho) Balbontin, David (Samantha) Hammerton, Lindsay (Adam) Gage, Melissa (Eric) Dow, Allison (Ryan) Carroll, Justin (Dana) Taylor and eleven great-grandchildren. Sisters: Norma (Alex) Zerr of Grainfield, and Louise (Harvey) Wildeman of Quinter.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harry, parents Henry and Edith Ziegler, two brothers Douglas and Delbert Ziegler and sister-in-law Olinda Ziegler

 </figure>Deloris was born to Henry and Edith (Hetzel) Ziegler in Trego County on Nov. 15, 1935. At the age of 3 the family moved from Collyer to Grainfield.&nbsp; Deloris attended Grainfield Grade School and graduated for Grainfield High School in 1954. &nbsp;She then attended St. Anthony’s School of nursing in&nbsp; Hays, where she received her R.N. degree. Deloris practiced nursing for 47 years and retired in 2004.On Oct. 12, 1957, Deloris married Harry Wasinger at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Grainfield. They shared 57 years of marriage; they lived in Hays and Manhattan, Kan., until 1960 when they moved to California. Harry passed away on Dec. 8, 2014. They were blessed with three daughters; Brenda, Cindy and Pam. &nbsp;Deloris’ hobbies included painting pictures, working outside in her yard, taking care of her many orchid plants and attending her grandchildren's events. &nbsp;Deloris is survived by her three daughters: Brenda and Ken Hammerton of Germantown, Tenn., Cindy and Gary Peck of Seal Beach, Calif., and Pam and Tracy Taylor of Orange, Calif. Eight grandchildren: Jessica (David) Sawyers, Andrea (Jim) Rusiewski, Jackie (Nacho) Balbontin, David (Samantha) Hammerton, Lindsay (Adam) Gage, Melissa (Eric) Dow, Allison (Ryan) Carroll, Justin (Dana) Taylor and eleven great-grandchildren. Christine Carol Kohart Michael passed peacefully Saturday, July 1, 2023, with her daughter Tami and her son Brad by her side. She lived a long, full life of caring, nurturing and loving the people around her with her vibrant energy.

She was born May 14, 1936, in Penokee, to Everett and Nellie Kohart. She married William Douglas Michael on Aug. 3, 1958, and they were married almost 40 years at the time of his passing in 1997. Together they lived in several states, including Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Ohio, and in 1982 they settled in Edmond, Okla.

Chris never knew a stranger and befriended everyone she met. She was an amazing caregiver to her children, grandchildren, and many, many others – being the mom or grandma to anyone who needed extra love. She made her house a warm, loving home where everyone felt welcome and cared for. She made holidays so special that no detail was missed, and created unique and special memories for everyone who entered her life and became “family.”

She was also adventurous – always happy to try new things, whether it be recipes, home décor, clubs, or travel excursions. She was kind, giving, and generous to everyone and with life in general, always making each day special in some way.

Chris is survived by her two children, Tami Steinberger of Cleveland, Ohio, and Brad Michael and wife Vilona of Oklahoma City; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Kenny Kohart of Carson City, Nev.

Preceding her in death are her husband, Bill; her son Gary Michael (Paula); four brothers and one sister.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 8, at Stinemetz Funeral Home, 522 N. Pomeroy Ave., Hill City, KS 67642.

Her final resting place will be at Hill City Cemetery, 2801 N. Hwy. 283, Hill City, KS 67642.

Betty Jo (Taylor) Sells passed away on Friday, May 26, 2023, in the Lyons Regional Hospital in Lyons at age 94. She was born on Oct. 1, 1928, to George V. and Ora Grace (Engelbert) Taylor in Chase, Kan.

Betty worked for Farmland Industry at the Lyons Cooperative starting as a bookkeeper and finally becoming the manager. She was very proud to be the first women manager for Farmland Industry. After retiring, Denver and Betty enjoyed camping and fishing at Wilson Lake. They also enjoyed taking care of their honeybee hive and selling Watkins products. She was an avid gambler and was always at a casino whenever she could be.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Denver C. Sells; and daughter, Sylvia Ann Whitis.

She is survived by her sons, Dennis R. Sells (Maryann) of Moore, Okla., and E. David Sells (Becky) of Wilson; sister Maxine Sappenfield; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

A graveside celebration of Betty’s life will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 8 at the Lyons City Cemetery in Lyons.&nbsp;

Janet Sue Dombroski, of Plainville, died on July 3, 2023, at Rooks County Health Center, in Plainville, at the age of 83. She was born on April 3, 1940, to Henry Charles and Lois Rowena (Doty) Cooley in Ottawa. She married Robert Charles Dombroski on Dec. 20, 1958, in Plainville. He passed away on May 31, 2012.

Janet moved to Oklahoma at age 3 and then to Rooks County at age 6. She graduated from Plainville High School in 1958. She and Robert lived in Anchorage, Alaska, while Robert was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base. She was a cook for the Plainville school district for 15 years, and then a paraprofessional for a few years working with special-needs children. She also worked at a local drive-in theater and the Moore Indoor Theatre for 20 years and was a telephone operator for a year while working the night shift. She also earned her associate degree from Colby Community College while taking night courses later in life.

Janet was a Girl Scout leader for many years, and she enjoyed scout camping. She also enjoyed music, playing the piano, sewing, word puzzles, drawing (she had an artistic flare), traveling all over the country, garage sales and Thursday night shopping in Hays was a must.

Janet is survived by her children, Darlene (Steve) Norall of Southlake, Texas, Bob (Connie) Dombroski of Hill City, and Dianne (David) VanPatten of Christiana, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Karen Sanderson; and brother-in-law, Bill Sanderson and son, Rick Dombroski.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 7 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 6 with a vigil service at 7 p.m. at the church.

SHAWNEE – Nelda Rae Pakkebier, 80, passed away June 30, 2023, in Shawnee.

She was born May 9, 1943, in Great Bend, the daughter of Malvin and Harriet Grandy Ford.

A lifetime resident of Pawnee and Rush counties. She was a teacher and then later a mail carrier, and she also helped her husband farm near Sanford. She was a member of the Rozel Methodist church and served on church committees at Rozel and La Crosse Methodist Churches; a member of EHU Extension Unit, Rozel, Colorful Calico’s, La Crosse, and was active in 4-H as a project leader. She enjoyed woodworking, painting, stained glass and stitchery.

On Aug. 6, 1966, she married Marvin Edward Pakkebier at Rozel. He preceded her in death on Aug. 16, 2017.

Survivors include: two daughters, Pam (Ty) Welsh of Shawnee and Lea Pakkebier; seven grandchildren, Tyson, Trenton, Carly, Tanner, Ben, Rylie, Allie (Anthony); two brothers; four sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

JETMORE — Drew Edward Craghead, 17, passed away July 1, 2023, in Larned.

He was born July 24, 2005, in Reno, Nevada; the son of Kent and Erika Sweany Craghead. A lifetime area resident, he was a 2023 graduate from Hodgeman County High School and worked at Arensman Services in Kinsley.&nbsp;

He was of the Christian faith; was a member of the Community Life Group, Jetmore, &nbsp;Hodgeman County 4-H, FFA, Hodgeman County Trap Shooters and various Facebook truck groups.

Sgt. Gregory V. Knoll 22 died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 1944, during battle in World War II outside the town of Kommerscheidt, Germany, in The Hurtgen Forest offensive defending the line so other infantry soldiers could pull back.

Sgt. Gregory Knoll was born July 7, 1922, in St. Peter, Kan. He was the son of Adam and Eva Knoll of Garden City. Sgt. Knoll had 12 brothers and sisters. He worked on the family farms until he was drafted to join the U. S. Army in 1942. On leave, he married the love of his life Rose (Brungardt) Knoll on July 10, 1943. Sgt. Knoll was killed in action and was listed as missing in action until recently his remains were identified through DNA and was sent home to his family for a funeral and final burial. Sgt. Knoll and Rose had no children. He has only one surviving family member. His sister Agnella Horning of Garden City. Sgt. Knoll is preceded in death by his parents Adam and Eva Knoll, six brothers Edwin, Edward, Clarence, Eugene, Aruellius, Marcellyn Knoll and five sisters Josephine Meier, Genevieve Meier, Adeline Burgardt, Cyrilla L’Ecuyer and Glorianne Bascue. Sgt. Knoll was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. There is a public viewing on Thursday, July 6 from noon until 8:00 p.m. at Garnand Funeral Home. GARDEN CITY—Anna May (Sonnenberg) Velev, 84, died on Friday, June 30, 2023, at The Ranch House in Garden City. She was born on Aug. 30, 1938, in Wilsey, the daughter of Clifford C. and May (Vorse) Husband.

She married Eugene Sonnenberg on May 26, 1957. He died on Aug. 6, 1982. She later married Dr. Velitchko “Doc” Velev on March 13, 1983, in Garden City. He died on Feb. 14, 1995. Anna May loved motorcycling and owned her own Harley Davidson Sportster, which she rode alongside her husband, and her children frequently rode along! She was affectionately known by her Girl Scouts as “Harley Mom."

Anna May and her husband Velitchko embraced a love of travel. She visited all 50 United States and many foreign countries, including a 12-country European tour, many Mediterranean countries, Bulgaria, Sweden, Guam and others. Anna May has been employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone as an operator, Pulliam Upholstery as a seamstress, YMCA as a receptionist, USD 457 school bus driver, and the city of Garden City administration receptionist. Anna May’s many attributes were her kindness and generosity. She did not know a stranger and helped those in need. She blessed many lives through her time and thoughtfulness: A lifetime member and deaconess of the Church of The Brethren where she also served many funeral dinners.

She was a lifetime member of Girl Scouts of America where she was active for over 25 years with her daughters. A member of all her children's PTA, Eagles Lodge, supervising judge of elections and over 10 years as a National Red Cross disaster response volunteer where she was on location for Hurricanes Katrina and Charley and others, tornado events including Greensburg and Lincoln, Neb., forest fires in California, and gave over 100 pints of blood. She also was active with the Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo, RSVP at the Finney County Senior Center, Friends of Finney County Game Refuge and was a Master Gardner. Physically active her whole life she never sat still, a runner in her younger days, and an avid walker in mid and later life. Her quilts and delicate handwork are a treasure to many and to all of her children and grands, and greats are wrapped in her love and hand-crocheted blankets at birth and at marriage. GARDEN CITY—Anna May (Sonnenberg) Velev, 84, died on Friday, June 30, 2023, at The Ranch House in Garden City. She was born on Aug. 30, 1938, in Wilsey, the daughter of Clifford C. and May (Vorse) Husband.She married Eugene Sonnenberg on May 26, 1957. He died on Aug. 6, 1982. She later married Dr. Velitchko “Doc” Velev on March 13, 1983, in Garden City. He died on Feb. 14, 1995. Anna May loved motorcycling and owned her own Harley Davidson Sportster, which she rode alongside her husband, and her children frequently rode along! She was affectionately known by her Girl Scouts as “Harley Mom."<figure>

Anna May has been employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone as an operator, Pulliam Upholstery as a seamstress, YMCA as a receptionist, USD 457 school bus driver, and the city of Garden City administration receptionist. Anna May’s many attributes were her kindness and generosity. She did not know a stranger and helped those in need. She blessed many lives through her time and thoughtfulness: A lifetime member and deaconess of the Church of The Brethren where she also served many funeral dinners.She was a lifetime member of Girl Scouts of America where she was active for over 25 years with her daughters. Betty Marie Brown, 92, of Norton, passed away June 28, 2023, at the Andbe Home in Norton. She was born Nov. 2, 1930, in Norcatur to William Jesse and Mary Catherine (Johnson) Bowman.

Betty is survived by her two sons, one daughter, three brothers, seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and many extended family members. She was preceded by her husband, C. LeRoy Brown, parents, two brothers, and one sister.

Smith County resident, Zachary L. Lamont, passed away Sunday, July 2, 2023, at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 36.

Zachary was born August 27, 1986, in Phillipsburg the son of Curtis L. and Melissa A. (Parker) Lamont.

Survivors include his parents Curtis and Missy Lamont of Cedar, Kan.; brother Ethan Lamont and wife Jen of Nesbitt, Miss.; nephew Rhett; niece Ella; and significant other Misti Swank of Claudell.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 8 in the First St. John Lutheran Church in Kensington, with Pastor Dave Hutson officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow in the Cedar Cemetery, Cedar.

Lamont will lie in state from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg. &nbsp;The casket will remain closed.

Kevin G. Schiltz of Oakley died Sunday, July 2, 2023, at Citizens Medical Center in Colby. Born May 31, 1955, he was adopted by John “Jack” and Norlene (Baalman) Schiltz. He was the oldest of four children. Kevin grew up in rural Sheridan County, attending school at Seguin and Menlo, graduating from Hoxie High School in 1973. His work-life consisted of driving a semi and helping on the family farm. He enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, tending to his yard, and taking a drive in his Polaris Ranger. Kevin never met a stranger. In 1979, Kevin married Barbara Hansen. He gained two step-daughters, Mindy Baalman and Lori Baalman. Together, Kevin and Barbara had one daughter, Linsey. Barbara sadly passed away in an automobile accident in 1984. Linsey also tragically passed away in an automobile accident in 1996. Kevin married Tina Maier in 1985. They have three girls, Jackylee, Katelyn and Merit; and three grandchildren, Caydence, Canon, and a granddaughter due in November. Kevin is survived by his siblings: Kelly (Bonnie) Schiltz - Menlo; Kendra (Joe) Hartman - Denver; Kristen (Steve) Ostmeyer - Colby; step-daughters: Mindy (James) Bieker and Lori (Jeff) Beaman; his three daughters: Jackylee Schiltz and Merit Schiltz - both of Oakley; and Katelyn (Michael) Halbleib - Colby; his grandkids and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Kevin is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Barbara, his daughter Linsey, and wife Kathy Bergin. RUSSELL—Hilda (Bender) Dietz, 96, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Friday, June 30, 2023, at the Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell.

Hilda was born at the family home on Sept. 20, 1926, in Russell County.&nbsp; She was the daughter of David and Mary (Dietz) Bender. She grew up in the Bender Hill area and attended country schools until high school.&nbsp; She graduated from Russell High School in 1944. She then attended two years at Fort Hays State University before teaching all grades in a country school for three years.

Hilda was united in marriage to Paul George Dietz on June 22, 1947, at the Trinity Bender Hill Lutheran Church. They made their home for a year in Russell before moving out to the family farm.&nbsp; This union was blessed with four children: Ronnie, Danny, Barb and Randy. After retirement, Paul and Hilda moved back to Russell in 2001. Paul preceded her death on April 21, 2015.

Hilda assisted Paul at the meat processing plant that they owned with bookkeeping and wrapping meats. She was also very instrumental in the operations of the family farm. She was a member of the Trinity Bender Hill Lutheran Church before joining St. John Lutheran Church when they moved back to Russell. She was a Sunday school superintendent, a 4-H Leader, a member of the Ladies Aid Sorority before it was known as ALCW, V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and sang in the church choir for over 53 years. She enjoyed playing cards, dancing, bowling, embroidery, crocket and quilting, and spending time with family and friends.

Hilda’s surviving family includes two grandchildren; Shaye Harris and husband Matt and Brett Dietz and wife Callen; sister, Linda Coe; great-grandchildren, Kaden Harris, Kamry Harris and Sutton Dietz.

Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; husband Paul; sons, Ronnie Dietz, Danny Dietz and Randy Dietz; and daughter, Barb Dietz.

Celebration of Hilda’s Life will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 7, 2023, at St. John Lutheran Church of Russell. Burial will follow at the Trinity Bender Hill Cemetery.&nbsp; The family will be present to greet friends from 9 a.m. to service time Friday at the church. She was a graduate of Osborne High School and was a retired secretary for the United Methodist Church in Osborne.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Edward and brother Larry.
