Richard Thomas “Dick” Bedard, age 79, of Wichita, Kansas passed away May 16, 2023 at Wesley on Woodlawn in Wichita. He was born January the 14, 1944 in Hays , Kansas to Levi and O’della (Newell) Bedard. 

On December 30, 1965 he was united in marriage to Janelle Ann Lorbeer in St. Joseph’s Church in Hays. Dick was a longtime employee of Midwest Energy where he worked for 40 years. After retiring from Midwest Energy, he began working for Lowes in Wichita along with his wife, Janelle.

Dick was an avid KU Jayhawk, Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals fan and he enjoyed doing yard work.&nbsp; Dick was a man of strong faith whose family was important to him.&nbsp; 

He was a proud U.S. Army veteran and was a member of Saint Catherine of Siena in Wichita and a Knights of Columbus Third Degree member. Dick is survived by his wife, Janelle of Wichita; Son, Scott Bedard and wife Margaret of Wichita; daughter, Renee` Befort and husband Craig of Tulsa, OK; four sisters, Carol Bedard, of Leavenworth, KS, Michelle Beyer and husband Greg of Hays, Jeanette &nbsp;Howerton and husband Bob of Leavenworth, and Judy Koerner and husband Dave of Overland Park, KS; four grandchildren, Bret Befort, Kelsey Urban, Kristina Hopkins, and Brooke Teraberry as well as three great-grandchildren, Carson Urban, James Hopkins, and Kai Teraberry. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Fidelis “Dale” Bedard and Raymond Bedard. Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, 2023 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. Inurnment with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. HANSTON – Douglas A. “Doug” Meier, 73, passed away May 17, 2023 at Hodgeman County Health Center, Jetmore, KS.

He was born July 18, 1949 in Hays, KS, the son of Milton Edward and Theresa M. Weber Meier. He moved to Hanston in October 2022 from Graham, WA. 

Doug graduated from United States Military Academy at West Point, NY with an engineering degree and served the nation as an officer in the United States Army. After serving as an officer in the military, he was a project manager for IDEMIA, where he did forensic fingerprint identification.

He was of the Christian faith, head deacon at Church for All Nations, Tacoma, WA and currently attended the Faith Fellowship Church in Hanston. He was the vice president of Oil of Joy Ministries, an outreach mission to India, where one of his favorite pastimes was treating the orphans with ice cream. He enjoyed golfing, reading, carpentry and woodworking, building his own homes and fine furniture.

On June 12, 1971, he married Virginia J. Capece in Philadelphia, PA. She survives.

Other survivors include daughter Wendy (Mike) Halvorsen, Hanston; son Craig (Mandy) Meier, Puyallup, WA; two brothers, Howard (Jane) Meier, Great Bend, Steve (Carla) Meier, Hays; sister Sue (TR) May, Hays; six grandchildren, Nicole (Jamison) Leckenby, Michele (Jason) Zink, Michael Halvorsen Jr., Kristen (Evan) Doyle, Caleb Meier, Riley Meier; three great-grandchildren, Joseph Zink, Zachariah Zink and Timothy Zink.

Matthew “Mat” Dean Ayers, 40, of McPherson, KS, passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp;

He was born on March 4, 1983, in Pella, IA, the son of Dean Edward and Beverly Sue (Rouw) Ayers.&nbsp; 

He graduated from Twin Cedars High School (Bussey, IA) in 2002 and from McPherson College in 2007. &nbsp;He continued his education at Bethany Seminary in Richmond, IN. &nbsp;

On June 6, 2009, Mat was united in marriage to Emily Elizabeth Flora in Quinter, KS.&nbsp; This union was blessed with four children, Veda, Dane, Everly, and Logan.

Mat was a light inspection trainer at Pfizer and worked part-time at Three Rings Brewery, both in McPherson.

A loving father, Mat enjoyed spending his time with the kids; playing Minecraft, watching movies, camping, and having adventures of all types. He loved spending his time with friends and family, and was always willing to sit down, perhaps with a drink and enjoy life. Whether it was faith, travel, homesteading, renovating, or life’s troubles or joys, Mat was always ready to listen, discuss, and plan the next adventure that life had in store.

Mat was a member of the McPherson Church of the Brethren.

Survivors include her husband Clarence; sons Kelly of Sedalia, CO and Jan of Prairie View; her brother Jim Van Loenen of Madison, WI; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tues., May 23 at 10:00 a.m. in the Luctor Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Shawn Richardson officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp;Burial will follow in the Luctor Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9:00 to 9:00 Monday at the funeral home with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 7:30.

He was born September 26, 1949 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of George and Dorothy Scott Roof.

A longtime area resident he was a safety and security officer at Larned State Hospital and served in the United States Army and United States Navy. 

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and VFW, both of Larned. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, taking walks around Pawnee Rock with his dog Jaden, and watching and playing baseball.

On July 8, 1972 he married Nicki Rae Selsor at Larned; she preceded him in death on May 9, 2018.

Survivors include son Michael Roof, Gardner; grandson Nolan Christopher Roof, Gardner; sister Diane Weiser, Lincoln, Nebraska; two sisters-in-law, Sherry Nelson, Lincolnville, Judy Watson, Rose Hill; three brothers-in-law, John Selsor, Bowie, Texas, Darrell Selsor, Wichita, Forrest Selsor, Junction City; three cousins, Larry Brayton, Topeka, Kim and Richard Brayton, Lyons, Daniel Brayton, Oklahoma; aunt Sue Brower, Lyons; and other extended family members.

Deneva Jo Steinert, 57, passed away surrounded by loved ones on May 17, 2023, at Ellinwood District Hospital, Ellinwood, Kan. She was born on May 19, 1965, to Daniel and Dolores (Raab) Sullivan in Great Bend, Kan.

A life-time resident of Great Bend, Deneva dedicated herself to taking care of her family and was all about her grandkids.&nbsp;

Survivors include two daughters, Starla Willenberg and Jennifer Willenberg; six grandchildren, Hali, Kaden, Auna, Briella, Kamron and Trenton; two brothers, Devin Sullivan and Delton Sullivan; numerous nieces and nephews; and many additional loved ones. 

She is preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Danny Phil Sullivan.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be set at a later date.

Rosetta E. Garnand, 96, died Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at The Ranch House in Garden City, Kansas. She was born February 16, 1927, in Larned, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph O. and Pearl (Butts) Jarboe. Rosetta grew up in Larned, Kansas where she attended schools and graduated from high school.

On November 12, 1946, she married Kelsey D. Garnand in Larned, Kansas. They have lived in Garden City since. 

A homemaker, Rosetta was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, the Happy Homemakers, EHU, and the Twin Mother’s Club. She also volunteered her time serving on the election board, served as a Den Mother, working at Dr. Fry’s office, and cleaning their rental properties. Rosetta enjoyed spending her time crocheting, knitting, decorating and baking for the holidays, making Halloween cookies, growing flowers, word search puzzles, playing games, and watching Wheel of Fortune and Impractical Jokers. She also loved to spend time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Survivors include four children, Danny Garnand of Guthrie, Oklahoma, Jolene Novack of Garden City, Kansas, Janel and husband Greg Haflich of Garden City, Kansas, and DeWain Garnand of Garden City, Kansas; a daughter-in-law Janice Garnand of Overland Park, Kansas; three sisters, Venita Patzell of Manhattan, Kansas, Mary Will of Wichita, Kansas, and Cheryl Robertson of Wichita, Kansas; 21 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren with one more on the way; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Rosetta is preceded in death by her husband Kelsey who died on April 22, 2010. She is also preceded in death by her parents; son David Garnand; daughter-in-law Debbie Garnand; son-in-law Danny Novack; brothers Robert Jarboe and Joe Jarboe; and great-granddaughters Adryon Knoll and Shelby Novack. A rosary will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City, Kansas. Marilyn J. Rieke, 86, of Belleville, passed away May 13, 2023.

Marilyn (Baumfalk) Rieke went home May 13th, 2023, at the age of 86.&nbsp; She was born in Beatrice, Nebraska, on February 20, 1937. She enjoyed growing up with her five cherished siblings and her parents Mary (Vliet) and Albert Baumfalk and loved to share memories of those fun times with her loving family.

She married Duane Rieke on December 22, 1957, and they built a strong family who moved about between different towns in Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Kansas.&nbsp; 

She loved helping people and was a teacher in rural Gage County, NE.&nbsp; After being a stay-at-home-mom, she became an LPN and was a nurse in Hoxie, Belleville, and Manhattan, KS and Beatrice, NE.

A gifted quilter and friend to all, she loved seeing the flowers bloom in the springtime.&nbsp; Both she and Duane were avid readers and Marilyn shared the love of reading to her grandchildren, taking them to the library for the young children’s reading time.&nbsp; 

Marilyn was a woman of deep faith and was very active in her church (American Lutheran Church). She also was active in the greater community.&nbsp; She volunteered at church and was an active volunteer at the Belleville Library. She volunteered on the Rec Bus talking children to the library. Marylin was awarded Volunteer of the Year for the Belleville Library.

She loved to watch the Wildcats and Royals. She was also a doting and proud grandma.&nbsp; Her favorite job was enjoying watching her grandkids participate in various sporting, artistic, and academic endeavors.&nbsp;

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband Duane, parents Mary and Albert Baumfalk, sister Joyce Gross, brother-in-law Ed Gross and brother-in-law Joe Colombo. 

She leaves behind four children, Lora Rieke of Belleville, Ann (Chad) Leabo of Kansas City, MO, Dan (Kate) Rieke of Lenexa, KS, and Daryl (Kay) Rieke of Belleville. She also leaves behind six beloved grandchildren, Grace, Daniel, Sarah, Sophia, Jack, and Olivia, as well as treasured siblings, Janet Colombo of Bozeman, MT, Mike (Marsha) Baumfalk of Beatrice, Pat (Deb) Baumfalk of Lincoln, Liz (Bruce) Daubendiek of Pickrell, NE and many beloved nieces and nephews across the nation.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 30th, 2023, from noon to 7 p.m. at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home, Belleville, KS.&nbsp; The family will receive well-wishers from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 31st, at American Lutheran Church in Belleville, with internment at the Chester Cemetery in Chester, NE.&nbsp; Lunch will be at the church following the internment.

On Saturday, May 13, 2023, Alice Marie (McAleer) Gerstner, loving mother of six children and grandmother to 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, passed away peacefully at the age of 88.

Alice Marie Gerstner, known as “Marie” to her friends and family, was born in Danbury, Iowa, on December 31, 1934, to her parents Stephen Michael McAleer and Adelaide “Alice” (Brungardt) McAleer. 

Marie graduated from Girls Catholic High School in 1952 in Hays, Kansas.

 On February 13, 1954, Marie married LeRoy “Satch” Gerstner and together they raised two daughters, Barbara and Mary, and four sons, Mark, Joseph, Stephen and Michael. Marie was a beloved and nurturing mother to her children, whom she raised to love and respect God, family and friends. She supported and promoted her children’s Catholic education, and all levels of schooling, to help ensure each of her children was successful in pursuing their dreams. She traveled endless miles to attend her children’s sporting events, debate contests and music exhibitions, no matter how far away. She taught them to aspire for their very best and encouraged her children to reach for their loftiest ambitions.

Following in the footsteps of her own mother Alice, who was a nurse at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, Marie had a passion to help the sick and elderly throughout her life. While raising her family, Marie also practiced a career in nursing which spanned 50 years. She cared for the critically ill at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Hays, Kansas, and later cared for children as a pediatric nurse at The Post Rock Pediatric Medical Center in Hays, Kansas until her retirement in 1993. Even after retirement, Marie continued her vocation as a nurse for the elderly in Las Vegas, Nevada, until 2001.

In 2004, Marie and LeRoy relocated to Surprise, Arizona, in retirement. She loved to adorn their home with her teapots collected from around the world, a library of books, family photos and personal treasures. Even more, Marie loved her four-legged friends, especially her little dachshunds, who were constant companions. From spring through autumn, Marie cherished time outdoors and tended to her garden brimming with flowers, hummingbirds and quail. 

She took breaks indoors to follow her favorite baseball teams, the Kansas City Royals and Arizona Diamondbacks. Once the holidays arrived, Marie would likely be found in the kitchen. 

She was a masterful baker, renown for her German bierocks and Christmas cookies, and she was proud to have shared time teaching her grandchildren her recipes. To the delight of family and friends, she baked thousands of Christmas cookies every year to send to eager recipients across the country.

Marie was a lifelong member of the Catholic church. After devotedly caring for the love of her life, LeRoy, until his passing in 2007, Marie brought her beautiful voice to the church choir at the local parish at Our Lady of Lourdes/Prince of Peace in Sun City West. There she made so many treasured friends through music and the church community. Even as she struggled more in recent times, Marie woke up every day singing a song to greet her beloved team of caregivers. She brought happiness to her every day, even her last.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, LeRoy Gerstner; her parents Stephen and Alice; brothers Kenneth and LaVerne; her father-in-law and mother-in-law Joseph and Sophie Gerstner. 

She is survived by her six children, Dr. Barbara Smith (and husband Burton), Mark (and wife Lisa), Joseph (and wife Cecelia), Stephen, Mary Fitzhugh (and husband Alan) and Michael (and spouse Mitch). She is also survived by 14&nbsp;grandchildren and two great grandchildren; her sisters-in-law Lilian Rohr and Ima McAleer; and her brother-in-law James Gerstner.

Rest in peace, Marie. You are forever loved by all whose lives you touched in your own special way.

Visitation will be on Thursday, May 18, 2023 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m., with Prayer Service at 4:00 p.m., at Camino del Sol Funeral Chapel, 13738 W. Camino del Sol, Sun City West, AZ 85375. Funeral Mass will take place on Friday May 19, 2023 at 10:00 a.m .at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church at 9728 W. Palmeras Drive, Sun City, AZ 85373. She traveled endless miles to attend her children’s sporting events, debate contests and music exhibitions, no matter how far away. She taught them to aspire for their very best and encouraged her children to reach for their loftiest ambitions.Following in the footsteps of her own mother Alice, who was a nurse at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, Marie had a passion to help the sick and elderly throughout her life. While raising her family, Marie also practiced a career in nursing which spanned 50 years. She cared for the critically ill at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Hays, Kansas, and later cared for children as a pediatric nurse at The Post Rock Pediatric Medical Center in Hays, Kansas until her retirement in 1993. Even after retirement, Marie continued her vocation as a nurse for the elderly in Las Vegas, Nevada, until 2001.In 2004, Marie and LeRoy relocated to Surprise, Arizona, in retirement. She loved to adorn their home with her teapots collected from around the world, a library of books, family photos and personal treasures. Even more, Marie loved her four-legged friends, especially her little dachshunds, who were constant companions. From spring through autumn, Marie cherished time outdoors and tended to her garden brimming with flowers, hummingbirds and quail. She took breaks indoors to follow her favorite baseball teams, the Kansas City Royals and Arizona Diamondbacks. Once the holidays arrived, Marie would likely be found in the kitchen. She was a masterful baker, renown for her German bierocks and Christmas cookies, and she was proud to have shared time teaching her grandchildren her recipes. To the delight of family and friends, she baked thousands of Christmas cookies every year to send to eager recipients across the country.Marie was a lifelong member of the Catholic church. After devotedly caring for the love of her life, LeRoy, until his passing in 2007, Marie brought her beautiful voice to the church choir at the local parish at Our Lady of Lourdes/Prince of Peace in Sun City West. There she made so many treasured friends through music and the church community. Even as she struggled more in recent times, Marie woke up every day singing a song to greet her beloved team of caregivers. She brought happiness to her every day, even her last.Marie was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, LeRoy Gerstner; her parents Stephen and Alice; brothers Kenneth and LaVerne; her father-in-law and mother-in-law Joseph and Sophie Gerstner. She is survived by her six children, Dr. Barbara Smith (and husband Burton), Mark (and wife Lisa), Joseph (and wife Cecelia), Stephen, Mary Fitzhugh (and husband Alan) and Michael (and spouse Mitch). She is also survived by 14&nbsp;grandchildren and two great grandchildren; her sisters-in-law Lilian Rohr and Ima McAleer; and her brother-in-law James Gerstner.Rest in peace, Marie. Mary Katherine Messamore, second child of Kenneth Warren and Joan Rose (Renner) Messamore, was born on May 16, 1947 in Colby, Kansas. 

Mary attended school in Colby, graduating in 1965. Starting at the age of 13, Mary worked at many different jobs. She was a housekeeper for a couple of families, cooked meals for another, and was a bookkeeper for her family’s incorporation and for D.E. Sroufe Oil. Mary attended Sydney’s Hairdressing College in Hutchinson, Kansas, graduating in 1968, then started her career in Garden City before opening her own salon in Colby after a couple years. On February 19, 1979, she went to work part-time for the Colby Police Department as a communications officer. On April 1 of that year, she went full time as she felt she had really found her calling, and began only working at her beauty shop part time. Mary continued working at the police department, working up to Chief Communications Officer. She also worked as the 9-1-1 Director for Thomas County. She and Scot Ekberg addressed Thomas County, getting it ready for Enhanced 9-1-1. Mary continued working for Colby until 1994 when she accepted a position with Butler County Kansas to establish Enhanced 9-1-1 for them. In 1996 Mary moved back to northwest Kansas and went to work for Sherman County where she was hired to consolidate their Enhanced 9-1-1. She stayed in Sherman County until 2005. When she worked in Goodland, Mary was also appointed Emergency Management Director for Sherman County. She and her dad were the first father-daughter certified managers (CEM) in the state of Kansas. She then took a position in Hutchinson where she became the Director of Hutchinson-Reno County Communications Center (HRCEC).&nbsp;She retired from Hutchinson in 2011.

She moved to Marion after retirement to be close to her greatest accomplishment, Katie J. Messamore Rahe as well as to be near her son-in-law Rob Rahe, and her three grandchildren Shayla Michelle, Justin Tyler, and Jarred Lee Rahe. Besides her family, Mary had a great love for the communications organization that she belonged to for over 40 years. She joined the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) in 1979. She served as chair for all offices of the Kansas Chapter except secretary. She then served as the chapter’s Executive Council Representative for over 10 years. She was privileged to be named a Life Member to APCO International, an honor held by 223 people out of an organization of over 35,000. Being involved with APCO allowed her to travel to many states, by 2019 she had been to 48 of the 50 states. Mary also traveled to China in 1988 with a group of APCO members. Mary loved traveling and was lucky enough to travel with many of her brothers and sisters and some of her nieces and nephews. She was able to visit; China, Japan, Mexico, Canada, Greece, Turkey, Germany, Russia, Egypt, Israel, Jerusalem, Bulgaria, the Greek Islands, Spain and the Caribbean. She also spent time in her daughter’s classroom as a volunteer for many years; the students affectionally called her Grandma Mary and she loved them all dearly. Mary was preceded in death by her parents Kenneth W. and Joan Messamore; her grandparents James Robert and Genevieve Messamore, and Peter and Emma Anna Renner; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Mary is survived by her siblings Ken (Diane) Messamore Buehla, Colorado; Beth (Jack Leatherman) Wieck Parker, Colorado; Jane David, Janet Messamore, Bill (Debbie) Messamore Wichita, Kansas; and Margie (Jay) Bartlett Springfield, Missouri as well as by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and cousins on both sides of the family. She is also survived by her daughter Katie (Rob) Rahe, her granddaughter Shayla, Marion, Kansas; her grandsons Justin (Jaden) Emporia, Kansas, and Jarred, Overland Park, Kansas. A graveside service will take place at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Beulah Cemetery, Colby.

Susan died on May 13, 2023, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.

She was born on April 22, 1951, in Great Bend, Kansas and is the daughter of Robert Raymond and Mary Lee (Stewart) Scott who preceded her in death.

She married Dennis Angle in 1975 and later divorced. She then married Dr. Lane Marshall, former dean of landscape architecture at Kansas State University who preceded her in death in 2003.

Survivors include her children Paul Angle, 45 (Josh) of Junction City and Lilly Marshall, 25 of North Kansas City, MO. Other survivors include her three brothers Billy Hall (Linda), Patrick Scott (Gia) and Mike Scott (Nancy) and numerous nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces.

Susan earned her undergraduate degree in library sciences at Emporia State University. She later received her master’s degree in counseling and a Ph.D. in counseling from Kansas State.

Susan was employed at Kansas State from 1976 until she retired in 2013. Besides working in the K-State counseling services office she is credited with creating and directing the Leadership Studies program at Kansas State. She retired with the title of Founding Director of the Staley School of Leadership Studies at Kansas State University. To honor her service at Leadership Studies the faculty and staff there established the Susan M. Scott Community Leadership Award.

Another noteworthy accomplishment during her KSU days was when she co-authored, along with Bob Shoop, a book called “Leadership Lessons from Bill Snyder” in 1998.

Besides at K-State, Susan also used her leadership abilities throughout the Manhattan community. Her early work with the Rape Survivors Support Group was the start of The Crisis Center of Manhattan. She co-founded the Riley County women’s political caucus. In the 1980s, she worked with others to establish a sister city relationship with Nindiri, Nicaragua. And she formed a community group to advocate for progressive public school learning activities.

Her community activism in later years was as one of the founders of PFLAG, beginning a support group for family members of the LGBT community. At K-State, Susan co-chaired the Task Force on Retention of Minority students, which brought about many changes, significantly, the establishment of an office of diversity. &nbsp;Using the same task force model, she studied and advocated for adult students, women students, gay, lesbian, and bi-sexual students. &nbsp;Susan was a woman of many rare gifts and talents who generously devoted them all in service to progressive change.

Butch Hupfer, age 63, of Russell, KS, died May 13, 2023, at the Russell Regional Hospital - Russell.

He was a lifelong resident of Russell, Kansas, having been born there on July 14, 1959, to Everett L. Hupfer, Sr., and Nancy Kuntzsch.&nbsp; 

He attended Russell High School and was the owner/operator of Butch’s Tree Service.

Butch’s pride and joy were his 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren whom he adored.&nbsp; 

His favorite holiday was Christmas with his family, together with fishing, playing bingo, rabbit hunting, gambling, and was an avid gardener.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Kay L. Scheck; two sons, Adam Hupfer and Clint (Jevon) Hejny; three daughters, Melanie (Jesse) Hoch, Jennifer Ayala, and Keri Hejny; a sister, Bonnie Stevenson, together with 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Butch was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Debbie.

Graveside services will be Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 2 p.m. at the Cross Plains Cemetery - Russell County.

Venice Genevieve “Genny” Poage was born January 11, 1923 in York, Nebraska to Sylvia Anna and Vern Martin Elliott of York County, Nebraska.

She graduated from Holton High School in 1940 and married John Spencer. They had a son Bruce Alan; they later divorced. On August 24, 1947 she married Arthur Verle Poage. To this union a daughter was born, Verla Genice.

Genny worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator and service representative for 35 years. She served several terms on the Norton City Council and as a Norton Ambassador. 

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Norton.

 Genny enjoyed painting china, refinishing furniture; she taught herself to cane furniture and she loved her cats and antiques.

Genny was preceded in death by her parents Vern and Sylvia; husband Verle; sister Delores; and son-in-law Tony Grysch. 

She is survived by daughter Verla Grysch of Norton; son Bruce Poage and wife Mary of Topeka; Poage grandchildren Steve (Tammy), Kyle (Kristin), all of Topeka; great-grandkids Alex (Becky), Caleb (Abby C.), Trevor (Brynn), Jenna, Abby K., and Nathan, and great-great-grandson Davis.

An informal gathering of family and friends will be held from 3-5:00 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 2023 at the funeral home. A private inurnment will be held in the Norton Cemetery. They had a son Bruce Alan; they later divorced. On August 24, 1947 she married Arthur Verle Poage. To this union a daughter was born, Verla Genice.Genny worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator and service representative for 35 years. She served several terms on the Norton City Council and as a Norton Ambassador. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Norton. Genny enjoyed painting china, refinishing furniture; she taught herself to cane furniture and she loved her cats and antiques.Genny was preceded in death by her parents Vern and Sylvia; husband Verle; sister Delores; and son-in-law Tony Grysch. Longtime Goodland resident Roger Dean Blume passed away peacefully with his wife Mindy by his side at Topside Manor in Goodland, KS after a long battle with cancer.

He was born on December 17, 1952 in St. Francis KS to Dean and Erna (Schirmer) Blume. 

He attended Armel Grade School and Goodland Grade School and graduated Goodland High School in 1971. He then attended Northwest Kansas Area Vocational Technical School for automotive technology.

He was employed for Safeway Stores. Inc. in Goodland for twenty years. When the store closed, he worked for USD #352 for one year in shipping and supply. He then worked as service manager at Herl Chevrolet Inc. in Goodland for the next 25 years. He thoroughly enjoyed working with his fellow associates and helping all of his customers in any way that he could.

He didn’t know a stranger and loved visiting with anyone about anything. He would always lend a helping hand whenever needed. Bad health forced him to retire in 2014.

He married the love of his life Melinda Brack on June 28, 1975 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Goodland. They lived all of their married life in Goodland.

Roger loved watching NFL, and was an avid Broncos fan. He also loved NASCAR, NHRA Drag Racing, any old Western, Gunsmoke, Pickers, First 48, Moonshiners and Oak Island. He also liked studying everything on his iPad.

He was a Kansas State Grain Inspector for nine years. He also had an after-hours job at his home offering small engine repair service which he thoroughly enjoyed.

His greatest accomplishment that he was very proud of was building two street rods and two muscle cars. He and his wife spent many years attending hundreds of rod runs and car shows with their friends. He also loved to attend the NHRA Mile High Nationals drag racing event with his friends as often as he could.

Roger was a member of the High Plains Performance Club, Early Iron Car Club where he was president for thirteen years. He thoroughly enjoyed the car club for the Rod Runs held every year with the Flatlanders Festival.

He also was a member of the Northwest Kansas Cruisers where many years were spent attending Rod Runs and making cherished friends for life.

He was a member of NRA and enjoyed shooting and collecting. He also enjoyed fishing and camping many weekends at Swanson Reservoir in Trenton, NE.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in St. Francis, KS. He was president of the church council for six years. He was a man of strong faith and truly loved the Lord, his church, his Pastor, and his church family.

Roger is survived by his wife Mindy of the home, his sister Linda Marshall of Hays, KS. He is also survived by four nephews, three nieces, three great nephews and one great-niece; many cousins, his precious cat “Bubbles” and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, in-laws Palmer and Florence Brack, brother-in-law Wayne Marshall and many aunts and uncles, cousins and friends. He will truly be missed by everyone.

Memorial Service will be held on Thursday May 18, 2023 at 9:30 a.m. MT at the Peace Lutheran Church in St. Francis, Kansas. Burial of ashes will follow at the St. Francis Cemetery.

Carl D. Kobler, Jr (Kobie), 72, peacefully passed away on April 24, 2023 at Saint Luke’s Hospital, Kansas&nbsp;City, Missouri. His health had been steadily declining the past few years, then very recently was diagnosed&nbsp;with an aggressive form of leukemia, which he quickly succumbed to.

Kobie was born on June 3, 1950 to Dr. Carl D. Kobler, and Elma H. Kobler, in Kansas City, Kansas. He was&nbsp;the third of four children born to this family. He was preceded in death by both his parents, and oldest&nbsp;brother, Kevin Kobler. He is survived by his wife, Joan Roan (Olathe, KS), his sons, Jamie Dowis (Hays,&nbsp;KS), Jeremy Kobler (Kansas City, MO), and Chris Kobler (Kansas City, MO), grandchildren Jade Dowis,&nbsp;Shandra Kobler, Jace Kobler, and Hudson Kobler, sister Karen Kobler-Peek (Warrensburg MO), brother&nbsp;John Kobler (Derby, KS), and six nephews.

During Kobie’s early years, the family lived for brief periods in California, Idaho, Kansas, then&nbsp;Massachusetts, before moving back to Hill City, Kansas when he was a sixth grader. Kobie claimed Kansas&nbsp;as his home, and simply loved small town-country living.&nbsp;

He attended both grade school and high school in Hill City, where he graduated in May, 1 968.&nbsp;While in high school, Kobie participated in sports, lettering in football and wrestling. He was also a talented vocalist, who very much enjoyed singing in the high school choir, and men’s quartet. Kobie often&nbsp;performed as a soloist, and participated in school sponsored music clinics in Hays as well.

Throughout those early years, you might find him running around with buddies (yep, a little mischief there),&nbsp;or catch him playing snooker at the local pool hall. Otherwise he was quite possibly out hunting or fishing&nbsp;somewhere in Graham County. Both became lifelong hobbies, as did vegetable gardening, which he&nbsp;learned from his folks.

After graduating high school, Kobie was in and out of college. Being undecided on a field of study, he opted&nbsp;instead to try his hand at a variety of vocations, including oil field roughneck, working as a lab tech at his&nbsp;dad’s medical clinic, and later became a licensed journeyman electrician. 

During that stretch of years, it&nbsp;was no secret to those close to Kobie, he battled his own demons with drug addiction. A very costly &nbsp;struggle. Yet by the Grace of God, ultimately he won that battle, and overcame. Kobie became heavily&nbsp;involved with the NA (Narcotics Anonymous) organization. Along with sharing his own experience regularly&nbsp;at local meetings, he became well known as an Area Committee member, was guest speaker at Mid-America Regional Conferences, as well as representing the Mid-America Region as a Delegate to the&nbsp;World Service Conference (WSC) in Van Nuys, CA. In part, the delegates convened to determine policy for&nbsp;the fellowship as a whole. Without question, that amount of dedication helped him remain clean and sober from 1985, until his passing.

Add to that, Kobie eventually returned to college, and in 1991 he received a bachelor’s degree in&nbsp;psychology from Saint Mary of the Plains, Dodge City. Furthering his study, he earned a master's degree&nbsp;in clinical psychology in 1996, from Emporia State University. This formal education provided the pathway&nbsp;for Kobie’s future work in the mental health profession. But in his own words, it was his life experience and&nbsp;ongoing participation in the NA that allowed him to more effectively help countless individuals and families&nbsp;deal with substance abuse.

Although Kobie stuck with those hobbies started in his younger years, he added cooking in there at some&nbsp;point. Like so many of us, he really enjoyed spectator sports, was a huge fan of the Kansas City Chiefs,&nbsp;and KU Jayhawk Basketball. He often tuned in with friends and family, sometimes getting a little chippy&nbsp;when watching those games. Yeah ok, that was an understatement! As a friend of his recently put it, Kobie&nbsp;had his opinions and, like it or not, he was more than willing to share them. Didn’t matter if it was sports,&nbsp;politics, religion, or whatever. Kobie was always rather salty around the edges. Yet he charmed many,&nbsp;cherished his friendships, and through it all, was a deeply compassionate man.

&nbsp;He really loved and cared&nbsp;for his wife Joan, and their sweet little dog Millie. In the end, what he yearned for most was spending time&nbsp;with his sons and grandkids. 

He wanted to experience so much more of that, but his time came to an end&nbsp;when his Maker called him home. We’re so comforted knowing Kobie’s at peace, yet no doubt we’ll miss&nbsp;him dearly.

Funeral services for Kobie will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 26, at the United Methodist Church in Hill&nbsp;City, Kansas. Interment to follow at the Hill City Cemetery.
