Patrycia Ann (London) Herndon, 84, died Tuesday June 6, 2023 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. She was born on June 1, 1939 in Bailey, Texas, the daughter of Rodney Baxter and Sedera (Morgan) London. Patrycia's attended primary school in Bailey and went on to attend Foster Junior High, and Longview High School. Patrycia artistic skill began at an early age, she often made paper dolls with her grandmother and regularly made outfits for her little rat terrier dog. Even at a young age she had a passion for nature and especially horses. She could occasionally be convinced to tell the story of being so bored at a basketball game she snuck out with a cup of water and drew horses in the dirt on the side of the school bus. When it was discovered, she was missing it was pretty clear where she was and what she was doing. While Patrycia was still in High School, Patrycia was commissioned to paint a mural for the baptistry in the Marbley Avenue Baptist Church in Longview, Texas. Her reputation grew and she continued to hone her skills and went on to attend Texas Women’s University, majoring in Costume Design, Fashion Illustration and Art Education. While attending TWU, she met her future husband Walter Owen Herndon. Walter Owen was attending LeTourneau Tech, and was running for Student Council President and she was set up on a blind-date to ride with him in the parade. As the story goes, he was so impressed with her, he asked her out the very next year. The relationship soon after became official and they were married following Patrycia’s junior year. It was then they first moved back to Kansas, for a few months they lived in the rent house behind the Winegar Home. Patrycia and Walter Owen did return to Denton where Patrycia finished her degree at TWU and Walter Owen worked as a disc sharpener for farmers in the area. After graduation the couple moved to Kansas permanently, and took up residence in Amy, Kansas. It was in Amy, Patrycia was finally able to have her horses. She favored Arabians, she had several: Tumbleweed, Adarae, Valada, Muskada, Ingaborg, Kioola and El Kazara. Patrycia was a member of the local saddle club. Moving onto the Great Plains was not without its challenges, but Patrycia took inspiration from the majestic thunderheads, the gently rolling plains, from all forms of nature and from the heritage and history that existed throughout the region. As a little girl she had read about the famous “fish within a fish” at the Sternberg Museum, and was awestruck that it was unearthed only a few miles away in Gove County. Patrycia continued her education, receiving a teaching certificate at Fort Hays State University and did her student teaching in Great Bend, Kansas. Patrycia occasionally taught as a substitute teacher, covering for a maternity leave on one occasion. Patrycia soon began offering private art lessons and it was there she found her forte. She was blessed to have become friends with the Heffner Family in Gove County and drew considerable inspiration from the Heffner’s “Wagon’s Ho” destination adventure. Her reputation grew across the region and it wasn’t long before she was being commissioned to paint rustic farm scenes to grace the mantles of many area farms and ranches. In a few years Walter and Patrycia started a family. They had a son, Joel Steven in 1967 and daughter Kendra Alana in 1971. A year later the family moved to the farmstead at 167 N. Cheyenne. During these years she became a founding member of the Lane County Historical Society and of the Lane County Art’s Council. The children’s education began in the small rural Amy School, but in a few years the county consolidated and the children went to Dighton Grade School. Having to make two trips to town every day, Patrycia elected to stay in town and paint until time to pick up the kids. It was then she managed to acquire Fred Hymes Real Estate office and turned it in to her “Bonnet String Studio.” It was here her talent really took off, becoming a founding member of the Women Artist of the American West (serving two terms as president) and of various watercolor societies. In a few years she had outgrown the little studio and was blessed to be offered the old First National Bank building at the corner of Lane and Long Streets. She fell in love with the building the first time she saw it. Using her own capitol, she managed to acquire the building in 1981. There was a year or two of transition but as soon as it was feasible, she moved her studio and gallery into the historic building. Almost immediately she began working on restoring the building to its historic magnificence. She managed to acquire a local teller’s cage and over the next few years restored the tin ceiling, light fixtures and other furnishings. She built stained-glass transoms for every window on both floors of the building. She even managed to return the original safe, from its current home in the Bonnet String Studio back to its former home in the First National Bank Building. She was honored to be allowed to participate in the 100th anniversary of the First National Bank celebration. All the while she continued to teach students and many local students were blessed to be encouraged by Patrycia’s tutelage. Some have gone on to secure degrees in art and several work professionally. Every success her former students achieved was of great pride to her and served to further inspire her own work. Patrycia’s teaching and fine art received another boost when Walter Owen and Patrycia moved into town, purchasing the Kalo and Geneva Hineman home at 145 South Second. The sun porch on the north side became another source of inspiration for her creativity. During this time Patrycia won several prestigious awards in the “Art is Ageless” competition and was the featured artist at Botanica four different times. Patrycia was blessed to have received two separate grants from the Heritage Trust Fund which allowed her to achieve her goal of finishing the work on the Old Bank Gallery and in time acquired the rest of the wrap-around building, which became the workspace for so many projects. One of Patrycia’s crowning achievements was to become a founding member of the “Painted Ladies.” Named for a species of butterfly, this was a group of like-minded women artists from the region who would get together once a month and spend the day emersed in their various art projects. They often would exhibit together at the 2nd Avenue Art Guild and at the Manor of the Plains in Dodge City, Kansas. Patrycia’s husband Walter Owen passed in 2010, but it didn’t slow her down any. She took over bookkeeping for the farm and even drove a truck during milo harvest. She was constantly reinventing herself. When the pandemic came it was difficult for Patrycia to postpone her lessons, but it was of great joy she was able to start them up again when the crisis passed. Students Evie, Olive, Harper and Evey brought immense joy to Patrycia. She worked with other students and colleagues, during this time: Shelly Selfridge, Jenny Linden-Tracz and Julia Pate to name three. All loved Patrycia with all their hearts. Patrycia continued to teach until the end of the semester, shortly before her passing. Patrycia’s final scheduled show will be the first week of August at the 2nd Avenue Art Guild in Dodge City, Kansas. Patrycia’s radiance touched everyone she knew. Thousands were influenced and affected by her grace. We should all be so lucky. Survivors include her son Joel S. Herndon of Dighton, Kansas; daughter Kendra Alana Herndon and husband Nic of Greenville, North Carolina; brother Joe London of Henrico, Virginia; sister Jane Mullins of Dallas, Texas; and sister-in-law Corinne Herndon of Dighton, Kansas. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday June 16, 2023 at the United Methodist Church of Dighton with Reverend A. G. Turner officiating.

The family suggests memorial contributions to be given to the Patrycia Ann Herndon Memorial Fund in care of Boomower Funeral Home. Fifty percent of the fund will go to the ongoing restoration of the building, thirty percent toward a scholarship for a future student pursuing art, and 2wenty percent toward art supplies for future students at the Old Bank Gallery.

Rosalie Ann Urban, 83, passed away June 12, 2023, at Sandstone Heights Nursing Home in Little River. She was born July 18, 1939, at Quinter, to Balthasar J. and Angela (Von Lintel) Richmeier. She married Arsenius A. Urban on February 20, 1960, in Great Bend.&nbsp;

A longtime Great Bend and Seward area resident, Rosalie was a hairdresser. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Seward, Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend and the Altar Society. She was a very talented quilter and cook, and she always made sure that her family was fed well.&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband Arsenius of the home; three sons, Wayne Urban and wife LuAnn of St. Joseph, Mo., Bryan Urban and wife Joyce of Wichita and Daryle Urban and wife Shelley of Ozawkie, Kan.; a daughter, Denise Joslin and husband Dr. Charles Joslin of Ellinwood; four sisters, Sophie, Jean, Patty and Roberta; ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, with the seventh to arrive in August. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Nicholas Joslin; three brothers, Valerian, Frank and Jerry Richmeier; and two sisters, Agnes and Margie.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, June 16, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Altar Society rosary at 4:00 p.m. and vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 17, 2023, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. Daniel “Danny” LeRoy, 61, passed away June 11, 2023, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson. He was born on July 12, 1961, at Great Bend, to Robert and LouAnn (Farmer) LeRoy. 

He married Mary Keil on February 14, 2007, in Great Bend.&nbsp;

A lifetime Barton county resident, Danny was a farmer. He was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, Mid-Kansas Water Quality Association, Buffalo Township Board Member, and was a former chairman for Great Bend Coop Association and Kansas Farm Management. 

Danny loved to play cards, travel, go four-wheeling and socialize with his family and friends.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife Mary Keil-LeRoy of the home; a stepson, Mark Straub and wife Misty of Great Bend; a stepdaughter, Sheila Watkins of Hutchinson; his parents, Robert and LouAnn LeRoy of Great Bend; a brother, David LeRoy and wife Leslie of Great Bend; two sisters, Kathy Riggs and husband Keith of Great Bend, and Susan LeRoy (Dave Spellman) of Tulsa, Okla.; and five grandchildren, Makenna Straub, Makeila Straub, Lachlan Watkins, Brock Watkins and Taylor Swensen; three nieces and one nephew.&nbsp;

Laurel Dinkel of Norman, Oklahoma died June 5th, 2023, at Norman Regional Hospital. Laurel was born on March 7, 1956, in Hays, Kansas, and grew up in Russell. 

She was the daughter of Loren and Virginia Dinkel who preceded her in death.

Laurel was united to Douglas Cubberley on August 14th, 1982, in Manhattan, Kansas. They moved from Manhattan to Oklahoma City and became parents of Sophia.&nbsp;

Laurel is survived by her husband Douglas Cubberley of Norman, and daughter Sophia Dinkel. She is also survived by her siblings: Janice Dinkel of Manhattan, KS (Glenn Phelps); Jay Dinkel of Springhill, KS; Bryan Dinkel, and Brad Dinkel (Denise), both of Russell, KS; Kevin Dinkel of Salina KS; and Deanne Dinkel of Topeka, KS, and many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her devotion to family and friends, Laurel was devoted to the social work profession. After graduating from the University of Kansas, she obtained her master of social work degree from the University of Kentucky, with a concentration in gerontology.&nbsp; This devotion focused on providing counseling services to older adults and their families as well as teaching and serving on many state and community boards, such as the Areawide Aging Agency. 

Laurel and Doug moved to Oklahoma in 1982 so she could provide counseling services to older adults at Red Rock Mental Health Center in Oklahoma City. In 1988, she became the director of aging services at Community Counseling Center.&nbsp; There, she was responsible for senior counseling, senior sobriety, and day treatment programs.&nbsp;

Laurel taught at both Kansas State University and the University of Oklahoma helping students develop skills to serve the aging population. She was passionate about teaching and had high standards for students, so they were ready to offer professional services to aging clients. She continued teaching classes at Kansas State University in mental health and aging and the dynamics of working with older adults until her death. &nbsp;In 1995, Laurel developed her private practice, Elder Counseling &amp; Clinical Services, PLLC. She contracted with other clinical social workers to provide counseling services to aging clients. Her reputation in providing aging services resulted in many referrals from the medical community as well as from various aging focused agencies.&nbsp; 

Laurel loved to travel. Among her many travels were six months in Bogota, Columbia where she taught English to adults. Her travels took her to South America, Europe, and Morocco. Her last trip was in September 2022 to Spain to celebrate her 40th wedding anniversary. 

Laurel will be missed by friends, family, clients, and others.

Celebration of Laurel’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 17th, 2023 at Pohlmans-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas. &nbsp;Remembrances will be shared by family and friends starting at 1:00 p.m. and family will be present to greet friends until 4:00 p.m.

Agra resident, George Richard Russell, passed away on June 7, 2023, at the age of 76.

George was born on March 22, 1947, to Charlie and Julia (Ragsdale) Russell.

He was preceded in death by his wife Janet Molzahn, brothers Andy and Albert Russell, sisters Norma Rebarcheck, and Clara Bandt, and brother-in-law Edward McElhaney.

Lenor Cecil (Manny) Irby, 97, joined her Savior December 5, 2022, at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, Kansas. She was the third child born June 7, 1925, to Aldey and Evelyn (Saindon) Manny on the family farm three miles south of Bogue, Kansas. Lenor loved the Lord, her family and playing cards.

In her youth she preferred to be outdoors milking cows, doing farm chores, running races, and competing in sports. Even as a mother she could outrace her teenage daughter and friends. Lenor lived a typical life on the plains attending a one-room school two miles from her home. She weathered the dust bowl, hard work, butchering chickens and hogs, pestilences, skinning animals for their furs, cold winter nights and the like. And yet, she always looked back on it fondly.

Lenor married her childhood sweetheart, Harold Irby, February 17, 1944, in Damar. The couple was blessed with nine children. She wore many hats: mom, postmaster, drug store employee, grandmother, daycare provider, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, cheerleader and so many more. Except for a short time spent in Texas and Colorado, Lenor lived her entire life at the east end of Bogue, where all nine children were raised.

Lenor was predeceased by her husband Harold; parents Aldey and Evelyn Manny; five siblings: Walter Manny, Orville Manny, Marie Dunning, Berneda Voss, and Irene Smith; daughters Iona DeLaney, Gaylene Stagner, and Luana Croomes; and grandson Darren Irby (son of Roger and Martha).

Lenor is survived by her sisters Aldea Webb of Sparks, Nevada, Deloris Colbert (Gerald) of Sun City West, Arizona, and Ruby Jennings (Gary – passed away, March 22, 2023) of Salina, Kansas; children Roger Irby (Martha) of Commerce City, Colorado, Ronald Irby (Marcia) of Gainesville, Florida, Norma “Jeannie” Taylor (Fred) of Aurora, Colorado, Randal Irby (Susan) of Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee, Leroy “Allen” Irby of Pflugerville, Texas, and Kevin Irby (Nanci) of Goodyear, Arizona; sons-in-law Bob DeLaney and Burl Croomes; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Lenor Cecil Irby

Irl was born on the family farm near Palco, Kansas, on May 3, 1937, to Chris and Mary Brassfield. He was the eleventh of twelve children. He died April 6, 2023, in Graham County Hospital, Hill City, Kansas.

Irl’s siblings dearly loved their little blue-eyed, white-haired brother and remember him as inseparable from his sister, Jane, and brother, Paul. They were a trio: when you saw one, you saw all three together until Paul was old enough to do chores. Then it was Irl and Jane together. There was a lifelong close bond between the three of them until Jane’s death in 1974.

Irl received his grade school education at Brownville School and formed a close bond with his classmate, Johnny Smith. They both graduated from Palco High School in 1955 and would remain friends for many years. While in high school, Irl played football and basketball. With his 6’ 4” height, he was a valued asset to the basketball team. He was proud of the team’s achievements in winning games and making it to the state tournament. It was the best the Palco “Roosters” had done for 40 years, and they were not able to repeat the record in the following years. He was also a member of Future Farmers of America.

He learned woodworking skills, basic auto repair and maintenance, and painted his car, a 1941 Coupe. For a year or so following high school, Irl and a friend worked in construction and on a crew building a new highway from Hill City to WaKeeney, Kansas. He attended an auto diesel school in Kansas City from 1957 to 1958. To help pay for his expenses, he worked for Vendo Company as a storeroom clerk and also in a machine shop. He lived in an apartment with a friend and later rented a room in a boarding house. After he finished school, he moved back home and helped his parents on the farm until he was inducted into the U.S. Army in December 1959.

He took Basic and Advanced Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood near Springfield, Missouri, and was then shipped to Richardson Army Base close to Anchorage, Alaska. He was assigned to the 562nd Combat Engineer Group. They won the Itschner Award for being the most outstanding Engineering Group in the U.S. Army. He was qualified to operate almost all heavy equipment but was a bulldozer operator most of the time. 

He loved to fish and went fishing much as possible. He hunted for moose, caribou, goats, sheep, and any big game. 

He served for three years and held the rank of Specialist 5 when he was discharged in January 1963. He drove home down the Alcan Highway in a green 1955 Pontiac station wagon. He visited his sisters and an aunt in Washington and Oregon and continued on down the west coast to California before heading home.

Irl married Ruthmary Bane on May 21, 1963, in Springfield, Missouri. He met Ruthmary, a student at SW Missouri State College, while he was in Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood. They continued their courtship by letters and an occasional phone call while he was stationed in Alaska. They lived on the family farm, or nearby, in rented homes and started a farming partnership with Irl’s parents. They acquired more cropland and pasture for their expanding cattle herd.

In the late 1960s, Irl and Ruthmary started college courses at Ft. Hays State College. In 1972, Irl obtained a degree in biology and Ruthmary a degree in elementary art education. Around this same time, they lovingly welcomed two teen-age nieces into their home and cared for them for a few years.

They continued to acquire more land and increase the cattle herd. After the death of Irl’s mother in 1974, they moved into the family home with his father, who was almost 80 years old. His brother, Chris, returned to Kansas in the mid-1970s and settled on the farm. He was a dependable worker, assisting with the cattle and farming business. During their years on the farm, their four sons were born: James Christopher, Troy Irl, Blake William, and Joshua Laverne. Irl enjoyed being a father and teaching his boys how to fish and hunt.

In 1988, Irl was gravely ill with a heart condition. He was too disabled to continue farming and sold the equipment and cattle. He leased farmland and pastures. Miraculously, his heart function slowly improved, allowing him to be more active. He built additional ponds, stocked them with fish and leased the fishing rights, as well as hunting rights on his land, to a sports club.

He and Ruth lived for a short time in Bogue, then a short time in Hays, and for several years in Larned, Kansas, while Ruth worked as an art therapist for the Kansas State Department of Corrections. They settled back in Bogue around 2003 until their deaths. Troy and Joshua, with Irl’s help, began the farming operation again. They acquired equipment and slowly increased the herd of cattle. The boys continued to farm cropland and build the herd of cattle.

Irl was a very hard-working farmer and cattleman. For pleasure and relaxation, he enjoyed hunting both birds and deer. He looked forward to fishing trips and the fall hunting season with family. He enjoyed the Brassfield Family reunions and visiting Ruthmary’s family.

Irl and Ruthmary (referred to as “Hon” by Irl) had 58 years of a loving, devoted, faithful marriage. They truly were each other’s “better half.” They were partners in the operation and expansion of the farm. They were caregivers for each other at times during many years of health challenges. They supported each other during the lifelong sorrow and mourning after the tragic, unexpected, deaths of two sons, James in 2005 and Joshua in 2017.

Both Irl and Ruth were in failing health when Ruth passed away in 2021. It was a heartbreaking loss for Irl and his health declined further. In the fall of 2022, he was hospitalized for pneumonia. Unable to care for himself adequately, he moved to Troy and Cayleigh’s home. With loving care and nourishing food prepared by Cayleigh, he recovered some of his strength but continued to have medical issues. He was admitted to Graham County Hospital the following spring and passed away April 6, 2023.

He will be remembered for his love for his family and siblings, his gentle wit, his compassionate heart, his kindness to others in their troubles and steadfastness in his own, his strong work ethic, and his help to others in need.

He was predeceased by his parents; ten siblings: Christina, Clay, Elmer, Dora, Nancy, Chris, Winn, Rose, Paul and Jane; his beloved wife Ruthmary (“Hon”); and two sons, James and Joshua. 

He is survived by, and will be lovingly remembered by his sister Velma Smith, Bellevue WA; sons Troy, (Cayleigh) Bogue, KS; and Blake (Heather) Texarkana TX; fifteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Redline Church of God, 11:00 a.m. CST, June 10, 2023.

 April 6, 2023Irl was born on the family farm near Palco, Kansas, on May 3, 1937, to Chris and Mary Brassfield. He was the eleventh of twelve children. He died April 6, 2023, in Graham County Hospital, Hill City, Kansas.Irl’s siblings dearly loved their little blue-eyed, white-haired brother and remember him as inseparable from his sister, Jane, and brother, Paul. They were a trio: when you saw one, you saw all three together until Paul was old enough to do chores. Then it was Irl and Jane together. There was a lifelong close bond between the three of them until Jane’s death in 1974.Irl received his grade school education at Brownville School and formed a close bond with his classmate, Johnny Smith. They both graduated from Palco High School in 1955 and would remain friends for many years. While in high school, Irl played football and basketball. With his 6’ 4” height, he was a valued asset to the basketball team. He was proud of the team’s achievements in winning games and making it to the state tournament. It was the best the Palco “Roosters” had done for 40 years, and they were not able to repeat the record in the following years. He was also a member of Future Farmers of America.He learned woodworking skills, basic auto repair and maintenance, and painted his car, a 1941 Coupe. For a year or so following high school, Irl and a friend worked in construction and on a crew building a new highway from Hill City to WaKeeney, Kansas. He attended an auto diesel school in Kansas City from 1957 to 1958. To help pay for his expenses, he worked for Vendo Company as a storeroom clerk and also in a machine shop. He lived in an apartment with a friend and later rented a room in a boarding house. After he finished school, he moved back home and helped his parents on the farm until he was inducted into the U.S. Army in December 1959.He took Basic and Advanced Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood near Springfield, Missouri, and was then shipped to Richardson Army Base close to Anchorage, Alaska. He was assigned to the 562nd Combat Engineer Group. They won the Itschner Award for being the most outstanding Engineering Group in the U.S. Army. He was qualified to operate almost all heavy equipment but was a bulldozer operator most of the time. He loved to fish and went fishing much as possible. He hunted for moose, caribou, goats, sheep, and any big game. He served for three years and held the rank of Specialist 5 when he was discharged in January 1963. He drove home down the Alcan Highway in a green 1955 Pontiac station wagon. He visited his sisters and an aunt in Washington and Oregon and continued on down the west coast to California before heading home.Irl married Ruthmary Bane on May 21, 1963, in Springfield, Missouri. He met Ruthmary, a student at SW Missouri State College, while he was in Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood. They continued their courtship by letters and an occasional phone call while he was stationed in Alaska. They lived on the family farm, or nearby, in rented homes and started a farming partnership with Irl’s parents. They acquired more cropland and pasture for their expanding cattle herd.In the late 1960s, Irl and Ruthmary started college courses at Ft. Hays State College. In 1972, Irl obtained a degree in biology and Ruthmary a degree in elementary art education. Around this same time, they lovingly welcomed two teen-age nieces into their home and cared for them for a few years.They continued to acquire more land and increase the cattle herd. After the death of Irl’s mother in 1974, they moved into the family home with his father, who was almost 80 years old. His brother, Chris, returned to Kansas in the mid-1970s and settled on the farm. He was a dependable worker, assisting with the cattle and farming business. During their years on the farm, their four sons were born: James Christopher, Troy Irl, Blake William, and Joshua Laverne. Irl enjoyed being a father and teaching his boys how to fish and hunt.In 1988, Irl was gravely ill with a heart condition. He was too disabled to continue farming and sold the equipment and cattle. He leased farmland and pastures. Miraculously, his heart function slowly improved, allowing him to be more active. He built additional ponds, stocked them with fish and leased the fishing rights, as well as hunting rights on his land, to a sports club.He and Ruth lived for a short time in Bogue, then a short time in Hays, and for several years in Larned, Kansas, while Ruth worked as an art therapist for the Kansas State Department of Corrections. They settled back in Bogue around 2003 until their deaths. Troy and Joshua, with Irl’s help, began the farming operation again. They acquired equipment and slowly increased the herd of cattle. The boys continued to farm cropland and build the herd of cattle.Irl was a very hard-working farmer and cattleman. For pleasure and relaxation, he enjoyed hunting both birds and deer. He looked forward to fishing trips and the fall hunting season with family. He enjoyed the Brassfield Family reunions and visiting Ruthmary’s family.Irl and Ruthmary (referred to as “Hon” by Irl) had 58 years of a loving, devoted, faithful marriage. They truly were each other’s “better half.” They were partners in the operation and expansion of the farm. They were caregivers for each other at times during many years of health challenges. They supported each other during the lifelong sorrow and mourning after the tragic, unexpected, deaths of two sons, James in 2005 and Joshua in 2017.Both Irl and Ruth were in failing health when Ruth passed away in 2021. It was a heartbreaking loss for Irl and his health declined further. In the fall of 2022, he was hospitalized for pneumonia. Unable to care for himself adequately, he moved to Troy and Cayleigh’s home. With loving care and nourishing food prepared by Cayleigh, he recovered some of his strength but continued to have medical issues. He was admitted to Graham County Hospital the following spring and passed away April 6, 2023.He will be remembered for his love for his family and siblings, his gentle wit, his compassionate heart, his kindness to others in their troubles and steadfastness in his own, his strong work ethic, and his help to others in need.He was predeceased by his parents; ten siblings: Christina, Clay, Elmer, Dora, Nancy, Chris, Winn, Rose, Paul and Jane; his beloved wife Ruthmary (“Hon”); and two sons, James and Joshua. John L. Veh, 85, departed this life on June 6, 2023, at his home in Hill City, Kansas. He was born September 25, 1937, in rural Densmore, Kansas to William and Mary (Atkinson) Veh, the youngest of three children.

He attended school in Norton, Kansas until his senior year, when the family moved to rural Logan, Kansas where he graduated in 1956. 

He enlisted in the United States Army in June 1957 and was discharged May 1959. After returning to Kansas he helped his Dad with the family farm and began his career in the oilfield, retiring in 1994.

He married Sandra Sprinkle on June 3, 1987 in Hill City, Kansas.

He is survived by his wife Sandra Veh of the home, his son Jim (Rosie) Sprinkle, Lenexa, KS, his daughters, Julie (Ron) Patterson, Derby, Ks, Jami (Lonnie Lucero) Sprinkle, Pierceville, Ks, Stacy VanBlaricon and Cara Hubbard; his grandchildren Jay (Rachel) Sprinkle, Trish (Craig) Staab, Taylor Sprinkle, Brittany (Justin) Shields, Xavier (Kelsey) Sloan, Ashlei (Dustin) Dinkel, Andrea (Daniel) Reed, Ian Patterson, River (Craig) Ledet, Riley (Zoey) Wands, Stephanie (Tyler) Winn, Tate (Skylar Chapple) Wands, Jaran (Jordyn Shorter) Clark, Emmett Lucero, Averett Lucero, Alyx (Caden) Shaw, Kayci Veh, and Danyl (Tucker) Dauer; great-grandchildren Jolee, Tristan, Mason, Cameron, Kenadee, Karsyn, Holden, Rena, Brooks, Jocelyn, Auggie, Abigail, Jacob, Hannah, Nick, Katie, Libby, Radley, Sawyer, Zayne, Ryder, Raysson, RhyAnne, Tatum, Jansen, Klace, Kreed, Hendryx, Hudsyn, and Hayz; great-great-grandchildren Reagan, Kameron, and Everli. In honor of John’s love for K-State football and KU basketball everyone is encouraged to wear Wildcat purple or Jayhawk blue to his service. The visitation will be Friday, June 9 at Stinemetz Funeral Home, Hill City, KS, where the family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m.. A celebration of life will be Saturday, June 10 at 3 p.m. at Stinemetz Funeral Home.

Stanley Robert Roy, 76, WaKeeney, Kansas passed away May 11, 2023 at Trego Lemke Memorial Long Term Care, WaKeeney. Stanley was born February 19, 1947, in Damar, Kansas, the tenth child of Nathlie (Asselin) and Dona A. Roy.

Stanley spent his school years in Damar and graduated from high school in 1966. 

Before Stanley started technical college for mechanics and welding in Goodland, he met Diana Bassett. Stan and Diana married August 12, 1967 in Damar. To this union four children were born: Laura, Brad, Nicole and Mark.

After completing his training in Goodland, Stan moved his family to Tribune, Kansas where he worked as a welder, until he moved the family closer to home to help on the family farm. Stan and Diana raised their children on a farm near Damar. He worked many years for KDOT out of Hill City and later retired from Rooks County.

Stan was known by many as a gentle giant with a big smile who never knew a stranger. Stan and Diana loved spending their summers camping at Webster Lake, visiting with friends and family.

Preceding Stan in death are his parents; an infant sister, and his sister Donna; brothers Orville, Eugene, Albert, Clifford, and Lavern; and a son-in-law, Leonard Marcotte. 

He is survived by his wife Diana; sisters Viola Ricks, and Norma Griffin and husband Darrel all of Salina; children Laura Marcotte and special friend, Cody Frye of Hill City, Brad Roy of Hill City, Nicole and husband Gary Kroeger of WaKeeney, and Mark Roy and wife Amber of Palmer, Nebraska; 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Betty Jo (Taylor) Sells passed away on Friday, May 26, 2023, in the Lyons Regional Hospital in Lyons, Kansas at the age 94. She was born on October 1, 1928, to George V. and Ora Grace (Engelbert) Taylor in Chase, Kansas.

Betty worked for Farmland Industry at the Lyons Cooperative starting as a bookkeeper and finally becoming the manager. She was very proud to be the first woman manager for Farmland Industry. 

After retiring, Denver and Betty enjoyed camping and fishing at Wilson Lake. They also enjoyed taking care of their honeybee hive and selling Watkins products. She was an avid gambler and was always at a casino whenever she could be.

She was preceded in death by her husband Denver C. Sells; and daughter Sylvia Ann Whitis.

She is survived by her sons Dennis R. Sells (Maryann) of Moore, Oklahoma and E. David Sells (Becky) of Wilson; sister Maxine Sappenfield; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Steven Dale “Steve” Schindler, 66, of Topeka, KS passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2022, at his home in Topeka. He was born on November 7, 1956, in El Paso, TX, the son of Abe “Junior” and Shirley (Trible) Schindler.

Steve graduated from Stockton High School in 1974. He then attended Beloit Business School. He had resided in Topeka since 2007 and was employed by Acosta Sales and Marketing. 

He married Joyce D. Murphy on March 21, 2012, in Las Vegas, NV.

Steve is survived by his wife Joyce of the home in Topeka; son Shawn Schindler of Hays; daughter Machelle Schindler of Hays; stepdaughter Terri Murphy of Topeka; stepson Travis Marts of Junction City, KS; grandchildren; and numerous aunts and uncles.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister Delores “Dori” Wageman; and grandparents Ray and Vera Schindler and James and Jessie Trible.

Services are pending at a later date in Stockton.

Freda Marie Leiker Wiesner was born on May 13, 1929 in Ellis County, Kansas; and grew up in&nbsp;Munjor, Kansas. She peacefully went to heaven on Thursday, June 8, 2023 at age 94.

Freda joined her husband of 61 years, Roman Wiesner, in marriage on April 23, 1952 in Munjor.&nbsp;Together they raised eight children and farmed wheat and cattle northwest of Ellis, Kansas. She was a&nbsp;member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church&nbsp;and the Daughters of Isabella.

Freda holds two world records. The first is the world’s best cook. She set international standards&nbsp;for chicken&nbsp;fried steak, galushkies, apple pies, noodles, and many Volga&nbsp;German dishes. The second&nbsp;record she holds is for the world’s biggest heart. She gave so much of&nbsp;herself and&nbsp;asked so little in&nbsp;return.

Freda is&nbsp;remembered&nbsp;by her children Ted (Colleen), Lubbock, TX; Mona Pratt (Gary), Stillwater, OK;&nbsp;Pat, Overland Park, KS; Mike, Ellis, Kansas; Larry (Lynn), St. Louis, MO; Don (Lori), Wichita, KS; and Elise&nbsp;Carter&nbsp;(Randy), Norman, OK.

Joining us in&nbsp;remembering her are&nbsp;six&nbsp;of her brothers and sisters;&nbsp;Sr. Mary Elise Leiker, Firma Dechant (Ralph), Clifford Leiker (Vera), Tony&nbsp;Leiker (Janet), Carol Wadley&nbsp;(Duane), and Linda Braun (Donny). Also Mom’s fault are nine grandchildren,&nbsp;and eight great-grandchildren.

In heaven, Freda has joined her husband Roman, who passed on July 24, 2013, her daughter, Jane,&nbsp;who passed on January 28, 1977; and her son-in-law Gary (Mona), who passed on June 26, 2015. Also&nbsp;meeting Mom in heaven are her sisters Alma Sanders (Ralph) and Juliana Urbanek (Keith), as well as&nbsp;her brother Maurice Leiker (Lillian).

Visitation will be held&nbsp;Monday, June 12, 2023&nbsp;from 5-7 p.m. at Keithley Funeral Chapel, 400 E. 17th,&nbsp;in Ellis.&nbsp;The parish vigil service, starting with the rosary,&nbsp;will begin at 7:00 p.m..

Funeral services will&nbsp;begin 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday,&nbsp;June 13&nbsp;at St Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis.&nbsp;Burial will&nbsp;follow in&nbsp;the&nbsp;church cemetery.

Thornburg, 86, of Utica, KS passed away June 7, 2023, at his farm north of Utica. &nbsp;Roy was born April 7, 1937, in the old rock house at the family farm north of Utica. &nbsp;He was the son of Francis and Bertha (Daniels) Thornburg. &nbsp;Except for the five years he was off at college, Roy lived on the family homestead all his life. &nbsp;

Roy attended Smoky Vale School, was a 1955 graduate of Utica High School, and a 1960 graduate of Fort Hays State University (FHSU) majoring in agriculture. &nbsp;During college Roy worked at the college farm and delivered fresh milk to the FHSU residence halls in the early morning hours after milking cows. &nbsp;

On June 7th, 1959, Roy married Ailene O’Toole at the Arnold United Methodist Church, making their home on the family homestead in rural Ness County. &nbsp;From this union, three sons were born, Lance, Marlon, and Rodd. &nbsp;Following Ailene’s passing in 1994, Roy married Roxie (McNinch) Fore at the Arnold United Methodist Church on October 26, 2002.

In 1960 Roy started a dirt construction business, Thornburg Construction, building terraces, pits, dams, waterways, and lease roads in addition to operating his dozer in the oil field. &nbsp;He continued to operate the business for more than 60 years in Ness, Gove, Lane and Trego counties.

Roy is survived by his wife, Roxie (McNinch) Thornburg, of the home, his sons Lance (Susan), Great Bend, Marlon (Darla), Coffeyville, and Rodd (Tara), Quinter; grandchildren Payden (Kaitlyn), MacKenzie, Tieraney, Tate, Taya (Broc), and Jesse (Casey); great-grandson Branch; brother Wallie (Coralee); and sister-in-law Janice O’Toole, Utica; nieces Darla (Roger) Windholz, Shelly (Bill) Popplereiter; nephews Allen (Julia), and Darcy (Michelle). &nbsp;He is also survived by Roxie’s children Rachelle, Randall, and Ryan (Crystal); grandchildren Aric, Audrey, Jace, Brittany, Hannah, Ethan, and Jillian; and two great-grandchildren.

Izabella Phoenix Eckhardt, 19, of Holstein, Nebraska, passed away June 8th.

I, Izabella Phoenix Eckhardt, graced the world with my essence on January 16th, 2004. My first name, Izabella, means God's promise, and my middle name, Phoenix, is a mythical creature that I considered to be my warrior spirit animal. In the hardest moments of my life, I would rise up from the ashes of my challenging circumstances by focusing on faith, hope, and better things to come. Now is no different, after an epic 19ish years, on June 8, 2023, I rose up and danced into the arms of my Savior after ferociously fighting my battle with Pineoblastoma Brain Cancer.

During my life on Earth, I was blessed to serve many roles in the individuals' lives that I loved: I was a daughter, a granddaughter, a sister, a niece, an aunt, a cousin, a friend, a "mother" figure (on occasion to those who may not have always appreciated my advice), an old soul, a bright light, a warrior, and a believer.

So how do I describe myself or my life in mere words? Well, my life was way more than the hospital I was born in, the school I graduated from, or where I spent my final day. It was also not defined by the numerous experiences that I will miss, such as my wedding, the births of my children, or the careers that I would have dedicated my talents to. Yes, I wanted all of those things, but what I hope I did do with my 19 beautiful years was make an impact. I embraced every relationship with those God placed in my life and did my best to show his love and light to the world through me.

I loved to dance, sing, draw, paint, act, play board games, and make people laugh. I loved the beach, my whales, and all the marine life I had the pleasure of getting to know. But the most important part of who I was directly relates to all of the amazing people I have met along the way, for each of you changed me for the better.&nbsp; When I loved you, I loved deeply and I hope that all of those that have met me know what a gift they have been to me.

I considered myself to be funny and often handled the tough situations life threw at me with humor. I learned that laughter makes life a better place and even death is still better than a rectal balloon.

I also strived to be a warrior. For me, a warrior is a person who fights for what is right, someone who doesn’t stop working towards their goals, someone who is brave, determined, and loyal.

I was not born a warrior; my character was developed as I faced adversities. The more trials I faced, the more honed my skills became. The times in my life where there were no other paths to choose from and my only option was to forge forward and fight the battle head on, I remained grateful, as each of those moments brought me closer to God.

I was an advocate, an advocate for finding more funding, better treatments, and cures for each pediatric cancer, but more importantly an advocate for the children that have and have had to endure this horrendous disease. My wish was to open a safe haven for the cancer kids' siblings to be supported, cared for, and loved, while being able to be present with their families during their siblings' treatment. I believed that providing counseling, schooling, support groups, and activities during and after their siblings' journeys was missing during my treatment and still affects my family to this day. No siblings should ever be left behind. I never got that chance, but hope that this will come to fruition one day soon.

My siblings say I was caring and nice, humorous, passionate, fiery, bright, fearless, fierce, and kind of a pain in their butt. They also said I brought happiness, growth, strength, and perspective to their lives, but they all brought so much more to mine. I want nothing more than for them to be okay and live long, happy majestic lives until we meet again. Our family is fun, even though it can be a roller coaster, but the best part is we won't give up on each other when times get tough. So take care of each other and live your lives in a way we can be together again…I love you all so much!

I will be waiting in heaven for my mother and father, Miki and Craig Eckhardt; my siblings, TJ, Thomas, Jasmine, Sarah, Azryn, Elexzia, Jaxon, and Lily; my grandparents, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and many family and friends. I was greeted in Heaven by all those I loved that passed on before me and some of the strongest fighters I know.

A candlelight vigil will be held at Lake Hastings Park in Hastings, Nebraska, on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at 7:48 p.m. to honor Izabella's life.

Her funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at the United Methodist Church in Courtland, Kansas. The family will be greeting guests beginning at 1 p.m., prior to Izabella's funeral service which will begin at 2 p.m.. A graveside service at the Courtland Cemetery and reception will immediately follow.

My first name, Izabella, means God's promise, and my middle name, Phoenix, is a mythical creature that I considered to be my warrior spirit animal. In the hardest moments of my life, I would rise up from the ashes of my challenging circumstances by focusing on faith, hope, and better things to come. Now is no different, after an epic 19ish years, on June 8, 2023, I rose up and danced into the arms of my Savior after ferociously fighting my battle with Pineoblastoma Brain Cancer.During my life on Earth, I was blessed to serve many roles in the individuals' lives that I loved: I was a daughter, a granddaughter, a sister, a niece, an aunt, a cousin, a friend, a "mother" figure (on occasion to those who may not have always appreciated my advice), an old soul, a bright light, a warrior, and a believer.So how do I describe myself or my life in mere words? Well, my life was way more than the hospital I was born in, the school I graduated from, or where I spent my final day. It was also not defined by the numerous experiences that I will miss, such as my wedding, the births of my children, or the careers that I would have dedicated my talents to. Yes, I wanted all of those things, but what I hope I did do with my 19 beautiful years was make an impact. I embraced every relationship with those God placed in my life and did my best to show his love and light to the world through me.I loved to dance, sing, draw, paint, act, play board games, and make people laugh. I loved the beach, my whales, and all the marine life I had the pleasure of getting to know. But the most important part of who I was directly relates to all of the amazing people I have met along the way, for each of you changed me for the better.&nbsp; When I loved you, I loved deeply and I hope that all of those that have met me know what a gift they have been to me.I considered myself to be funny and often handled the tough situations life threw at me with humor. I learned that laughter makes life a better place and even death is still better than a rectal balloon.I also strived to be a warrior. For me, a warrior is a person who fights for what is right, someone who doesn’t stop working towards their goals, someone who is brave, determined, and loyal.I was not born a warrior; my character was developed as I faced adversities. The more trials I faced, the more honed my skills became. The times in my life where there were no other paths to choose from and my only option was to forge forward and fight the battle head on, I remained grateful, as each of those moments brought me closer to God.I was an advocate, an advocate for finding more funding, better treatments, and cures for each pediatric cancer, but more importantly an advocate for the children that have and have had to endure this horrendous disease. My wish was to open a safe haven for the cancer kids' siblings to be supported, cared for, and loved, while being able to be present with their families during their siblings' treatment. I believed that providing counseling, schooling, support groups, and activities during and after their siblings' journeys was missing during my treatment and still affects my family to this day. No siblings should ever be left behind. I never got that chance, but hope that this will come to fruition one day soon.My siblings say I was caring and nice, humorous, passionate, fiery, bright, fearless, fierce, and kind of a pain in their butt. They also said I brought happiness, growth, strength, and perspective to their lives, but they all brought so much more to mine. I want nothing more than for them to be okay and live long, happy majestic lives until we meet again. Our family is fun, even though it can be a roller coaster, but the best part is we won't give up on each other when times get tough. So take care of each other and live your lives in a way we can be together again…I love you all so much!I will be waiting in heaven for my mother and father, Miki and Craig Eckhardt; my siblings, TJ, Thomas, Jasmine, Sarah, Azryn, Elexzia, Jaxon, and Lily; my grandparents, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and many family and friends. I was greeted in Heaven by all those I loved that passed on before me and some of the strongest fighters I know.A candlelight vigil will be held at Lake Hastings Park in Hastings, Nebraska, on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at 7:48 p.m. to honor Izabella's life.Her funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at the United Methodist Church in Courtland, Kansas. The family will be greeting guests beginning at 1 p.m., prior to Izabella's funeral service which will begin at 2 p.m.. Doris Jean Miller passed away on June 7, 2023, under hospice care, and tended by her children and extended family, at SunPorch of Smith County in Smith Center, Kansas. Jean was born on November 26, 1926, in Waterloo, Iowa to C.J. and Elizabeth (Rietz) Hamer.

Jean attended schools in Waterloo, Iowa. After graduating highschool, Jean received a teaching contract at Bennett, Iowa on her sister Ruth's reputation. She taught second grade in Bennett, Iowa. Jean then attended two years at McPherson, KS, meeting a handsome young man from Burr Oak, KS. She was united in marriage to Lyle Miller on June 11, 1950, in Waterloo, at the Church of the Brethren. Doris Jean taught two years at Kensington, KS before starting their family. Jean and Lyle served at many churches, the first being Kensington and Beulah. They also served at Pleasant View/Hunter, Scandia/Courtland/Norway, Tisdale/Burden, Stockton/Woodston, Rose Valley, and finally Cedar Christian Church. Jean served God for 70 plus years, living a life worthy of the “call.”

Jean joins her parents C.J. and Elizabeth Hamer; husband Lyle; son Mark; brothers Merwin and Robert Hamer; sister Ruth Riedesel; and great-granddaughter.

Survivors include children David and Crystal of Winfield, KS, Beth (Duncan) and Altan Hazen of Stockton, KS, Kathy (Elam Miller) Burns of Burden, KS, James and Melanie Miller of Newkirk, OK: grandchildren Shelby Miller, Shawn Miller Stover, Addie Duncan Jurgens, Gabe (Emily) Duncan, Jessica (Miller) and Shane Sloan, Jacob Miller, Becka (Miller) and Adam Tebben and John and Josie Miller; and eight great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, June 16, 2023, at 10AM at the funeral home in Stockton. There will be no public visitation.

Janice Marie Mix, 72, passed away June 5, 2023, at her home in Great Bend. She was born on June 9, 1950, Charles “Gene” and Margaret (Gliessner) Mix.&nbsp;

A longtime Great Bend resident, Janice was a parts manager in the oilfield. 

She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend and the Altar Society.&nbsp;

Survivors include four brothers, Larry Mix and wife Carolyn of St. John, Gary Mix and wife Susan of Sterling Colo., Ronald Mix and Robert Mix both of Great Bend; and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister-in-law, Beverly Mix; and a nephew, Tim Mix.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., and Altar Society rosary at 4:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, with Father Prakash Kola presiding. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend. 

Memorials have been designated to Prince of Peace Altar Society, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.&nbsp;
