Wayne - 73, was born on October 4, 1940, and passed away on March 26, 2014. His parents were Michael and Anna (Weaver) Augustine.

Ann – 81, was born on May 3, 1941, and passed away on November 14, 2022. Her parents were Edmund F. and Pearl (Kippes) Leiker.

They were married on March 31, 1962, in Hays.

Wayne, who lived most of his life in Hays, was a retired electrician, a U.S. Navy veteran, and a member of the Hays American Legion.

Ann grew up in Hays, was a 1959 graduate of Hays High School, attended the Salina Cosmetology School, was a hair dresser in Hays, and worked at Dillons in Topeka for 10 years.

They were members of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hays.

Survivors include their children Darin Augustine and wife, Jill, Wichita, KS; Dianne Lindeman and husband Dean, Gilbert AZ; and daughter-in-law Kimberly, Russell, KS; their grandchildren Nick Augustine (Amanda); Alexis Lindeman and fiancé, Jeffery Steiner; Tristan Lindeman; Samantha Lindeman; Aidan Lindeman; Mallory Lindeman; and Chloe Augustine; their great-grandchildren Bentley Augustine; Leighton Augustine; and Levi Steiner.

Wayne’s survivors include a brother, Kenneth Augustine and wife, Barbara, Hays, KS.

Ann’s survivors include three sisters, Hazel Roberts, Wheatland, WY; Ruth Howard, Hutchinson, KS; and Carol Zedaker, Wheatland, WY.

They both were preceded in death by their parents; their sons Keith Alan Augustine and Donald Augustine; their granddaughter Taylor Elizabeth Augustine; their twin great-granddaughters, Hadley and Presley Augustine.

Wayne was preceded in death by his brothers Leroy “Dick” Augustine; Mike Augustine; Harold Augustine; his sisters Mary Ann Dreiling and Jeanie Pfeifer; Betty Flannery; Valarie Ader; Velma Hornet; his infant brother Dale Augustine; and his infant sister Marjorie Augustine.

A Celebration of Life Service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 27, 2023, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays with Father Nick Parker officiating. Inurnment of their ashes will be in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Hays, Kansas.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Clines-Keithley Mortuary of Hays.

Nicole LeeAnn Smith, 39, died peacefully on May 14, 2023, in Lenexa, Kan. She was born in Great Bend, Kan. on June 9, 1983, to John Mark and Julie (Keil) Smith.&nbsp;

A woman who could do anything and did everything, Nicole worked as a phlebotomist and massage therapist, along with many other roles. She had a brilliant mind and was a gifted photographer, writer and crafter. Her hobbies included laughing (it was contagious), reading books, poetry, writing, and spending time with friends and family. 

Nicole loved fireworks, flowers, Star Trek, all kinds of people and had learned to love life. She was loved by so many and will be forever missed.

Survivors include her mother Julie (“Mister” Michael) Peterson; her children John Isaac Peterson and Ivy Adaire Peterson; her partner during the last year of her life whom she loved dearly, James Johann; three sisters, Tessa (Jacob) Fryberger, Kimberly Peterson, and Shannon Stephens; two brothers, Dal and Trenton Peterson; grandmother Donita Keil; three aunts, Joni (Brad) Wintholz, Jamie Keil and Anne Jambor;&nbsp; uncle Jeremy (Mandy) Keil; two nieces, Katelyn and Aliyah Fryberger;&nbsp; nephew Kade Fryberger; many cousins; and extended family through James: daughter Olivia Johann; brother Jason Johann; and sister Carrie Beth Cunningham.

Russel Eugene Sytsma, age 75, of Hays, Kansas, died May 12, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society, Hays. He was born June 26, 1947, in Martin, MI to Jacob and Martha Sytsma. 

Russ was educated in Evergreen Park, IL and shortly after graduation joined the United States Airforce where he served for 20 years eventually retiring as a MSGT working as an Aircraft Armament Systems Technician.

Russ met and married Karla Joyner in Burbank, CA on July 20, 1974. Karla planned their wedding in six days and in a couple of months they would have celebrated 49 years of marriage this July.

He enjoyed classic/old cars, attending car shows and stock car races, and traveling to the casinos with Karla for a little gambling. He also loved garage sales, auctions, and target shooting.

After his retirement from the Airforce, he worked and retired from the City of Hays Parks Department.

Survivors include his wife Karla of Hays, KS; son David (Nancy) Sytsma of Wheatridge, CO; daughter Becky Colvard of Hays, KS; stepbrother: George Voss of Evergreen Park, IL; sister-in-law Vivian Sytsma of WI;&nbsp; stepsister Nancy (Rick) Hollingsworth of Benson, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son-in-law Robin Bauer;&nbsp; stepsister Carol DeHogg; brother David Sytsma; and his mother-in-law Inez Basgall.

Elvera Mock, age 97, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2023, at Via Christi Village in Wichita, Kansas. She&nbsp;was born November 28, 1925, in Liebenthal, Kansas, to Bernard and Mary (Depperschmidt) Herrman.

She married Daniel Rupp in 1946. They had one daughter. After the death of her first husband, she&nbsp;married Norman Mock in 1979.

Elvera had many passions in life including bowling, fishing, cooking, sewing, trying her luck at slot&nbsp;machines and spending time with family and friends. She touched the lives of everyone she met and will&nbsp;be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughter, Terry McConnaughy; grandchildren Daniel McConnaughy and wife&nbsp;Juanita Norton, LoriBeth McConnaughy and husband Jonathan; great-grandchildren Tristan and Taylor&nbsp;McConnaughy, and Dylan Oliver.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Daniel Rupp; second husband Norman Mock;&nbsp;two brothers Wilbert and Richard Herrman; three sisters Firmina Herrman, Alfrieda Dinges, and Mary&nbsp;Ann Randa; sisters-in-law Dolores Herrman and Gloria Herrman.

He was born November 22, 1946 in Kinsley, Kansas, the son of Clemente and Lucia Mariche Perez.

A longtime area resident, he was a road maintenance supervisor for KDOT. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Larned Country Club, and PVCH Auxiliary, all of Larned. He coached Legion Baseball, Renegades Girl’s Softball, and basketball at Sacred Heart, and he also enjoyed league bowling and playing softball.

On August 26, 1967 he married Cynthia “Cindy” Meeker at Kinsley; she survives.

Other survivors include son Lynn (Toni) Perez, Pratt; daughter Rachel Perez, Larned; brother Tony (Darla) Perez, Larned; sister Linda (Frank) Garcia, Wichita; seven grandchildren, Brittney (Eddie), Adrian, Avion, Andreus (Julie), Reiley (Aaron), Cade, Halley; and five great-grandchildren, Ozlyn, Kamila, KeAndre, Zayne, Aalias.

DIGHTON - Brian Patrick Selfridge, 67, died on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born on February 25, 1956 at Scott City the son of Gilbert Lee and Lila Ann (Dyer) Selfridge. Brian graduated from Dighton High School in 1974 where he was a member of the football team, Dighton Singers and the band. He graduated from Wichita State University with his degree in business administration.

He then returned to the family farm in Lane County. He was a member of United Methodist Church of Dighton and FTMC. He was very active in the motorcycle club and took many trips on his Harley. He also enjoyed photography and classic rock. He is survived by his three sisters- Susan Daniels of Leavenworth, Shelley Selfridge of Dighton and Jill Obrock of Kingman.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers- Paul Selfridge and Kent Selfridge. Memorial Service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2023 at United Methodist Church in Dighton with Rev A.G. Turner officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

He was born on February 25, 1956 at Scott City the son of Gilbert Lee and Lila Ann (Dyer) Selfridge. Brian graduated from Dighton High School in 1974 where he was a member of the football team, Dighton Singers and the band. He graduated from Wichita State University with his degree in business administration. He then returned to the family farm in Lane County. He was a member of United Methodist Church of Dighton and FTMC. He was very active in the motorcycle club and took many trips on his Harley. He also enjoyed photography and classic rock. He is survived by his three sisters- Susan Daniels of Leavenworth, Shelley Selfridge of Dighton and Jill Obrock of Kingman. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers- Paul Selfridge and Kent Selfridge. Memorial Service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2023 at United Methodist Church in Dighton with Rev A.G. Turner officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery. Bernard Charles “Ben” Levings, 86, passed away on May 13, 2023, at University of Kansas Health Systems – Great Bend Campus, Great Bend, Kan. He was born on November 10, 1936, in Axtell, Kan., to Charles and Berniece (Thompson) Levings. 

On October 21, 1975, he married Eddy Ruth Roth. She died October 29, 1984. Ben later married Cindy Fercking in 1981, and they later divorced in 1992.

A Great Bend resident since 1974, Ben worked as a shop forman for equipment manufacturing. He was also skilled in construction, custom farm work, livestock, insurance sales, lock smithing, truck driving, and real estate.

Bernard is survived by close friend and caregiver, Cindy Fercking; a stepdaughter, Michelle; and a daughter of the heart, Vickie Dodson. 

He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Eddy; and two stepdaughters, Pamela and Mary.

Funeral service will take place at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Daniel Vandenburg presiding. Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery. 

Memorials have been designated to the Bernard Levings Memorial Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Jacquetta Mae Houser, age 102, of Quinter, KS passed away Friday, May 12, 2023 at the Gove County Medical Center Long Term Care in Quinter, KS. She was born July 26, 1920 to John and Bertha Reed. 

She graduated from Quinter High School in 1938 and attended Pasadena Junior College after high school.

On April 25, 1942 she married Roger J. Houser in Quinter. Soon after, he left to serve his country in WWII with the United States Air Force.

Her life was full and busy as a mother and running a restaurant with her husband. After the sale of their restaurant, The J&amp;R Grill, she helped her husband at Quinter Grain Company by weighing trucks during harvest for 28 years and often in later years with her two granddaughters in tow.

She loved her family and being a homemaker. She enjoyed collecting and selling antiques and turquoise jewelry and had a great love for animals. She loved spending time traveling especially to New Mexico and California to spend time with family. She was an avid sports fan, loved KU basketball and the Lakers.

Jacquetta is survived by her sons, Roger and Sue Houser and Lonnie and Michelle Houser; two granddaughters, Heather and Thad Whalen and Andrea Hargitt; grandson Greg Youngblood; nine great-grandchildren, Stella, Sophie and Jude Whalen, Jonah and Sydney Ruckman, Whitley and Savannah Hargitt and Zach and Cody Youngblood.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and her siblings Effie Wigington, Harry Reed and Bobby Reed.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 22 at 3:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Schmitt Funeral Home in Quinter, KS. Burial at Baker Township Cemetery in Quinter immediately following the service.

Lois Jane Burger (Blase), age 95, passed away peacefully May 12, 2023 at the Villa Grace Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Ellsworth, KS , following a stroke in January. Previous to January, she had been living at the Good Samaritan Assisted Living since April of 2019.

She was born September 28, 1927, to Louis and Concordia Blase of Sylvan Grove, KS.

She graduated from Sylvan Grove High School in May of 1945.

 She was married to her high school sweetheart, Merle D. Burger, on September 29, 1946, just five months following Merle’s return from WWII, and discharge from the United States Navy in April of 1946. Merle &amp; Lois had three children, Cheryl, Gregory &amp; Barbara.

They made their home on the old August Reimer farm, north of Sylvan Grove, KS, for 52 years, before moving to Lucas, Ks in August of 1998.

Lois worked along side Merle for over 50 years helping where she could with the farm work. This included raising chickens, gathering eggs, feeding calves, driving grain trucks during harvest and taking meals to the field. The hired help especially enjoyed wheat harvest, just for the meals Lois prepared and took to the fields. Her family will attest that she was a great cook!

While living on the farm, Lois always looked forward to her monthly meeting with the ladies in “The Thursday Club,” where there was a lot of quilting, (she loved making quilts) cross stitch, sewing , eating desserts, and girl talk.

After moving to Lucas in 1998, Lois (who always loved to play games and cards), joined “The Bunco Club,” which was similar to Thursday Club, sans the sewing. She also met regularly with the Gloria Dei ladies for bible study and kept busy spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly.

Lois is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Merle D; her son Gregory; son-in-law law Roger Kvasnicka; brothers Kenneth and Raymond; sister Arlene Dohl; grandchildren Kari and Kurt Bretz and Clint Francis. 

She is survived by her brother Ron (Mary) Blase of Salina; daughters Cheryl (Gordon ) Bretz and Barb Kvasnicka, all of Lucas, daughter-in-law Wilma Burger of rural Sylvan Grove; five grandchildren, Chad Burger (Terri) of Kensington, Jerome (Mandy) Burger of rural Sylvan Grove; Marcie Burger of Colby; Kyle (Jennifer) Bretz of Dover, NH; Erin (Seth) Streit of Lucas; 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Marilyn Joyce Heble, 82, of Colby, died Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at Citizens Medical Center, in Colby, surrounded in love by her two children. She was born January 4, 1941, in Park, KS, to Alphonse and Matilda (Kuhn) Depperschmidt. 

She graduated from Park High School in 1958 and moved to Colby where she began working at Southwestern Bell Telephone as an operator for 20+ years. She met and married Duane Heble on October 6, 1962. They continued to make their home in Colby and welcomed and raised three children. Marilyn was always active and interested in all their activities, but she was also careful to raise them to be independent and not get in the way of “natural consequences”, which was tested more than once. She was a devout member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and volunteered in numerous capacities over the years, but best utilized her organization skills and compassion for others by coordinating funeral dinners for over a decade. She volunteered with R.S.V.P. in Colby, and lots of other community projects, she just really enjoyed being busy and helping out in any way she could. Marilyn was very creative and enjoyed making handmade gifts for friends and family. Later in life she discovered she had a talent for art, and she enjoyed sketching and painting handmade birthday cards, gift bags and small prints. She was a skilled seamstress and quilter and made all kinds of projects over the years, her handmade Christmas stockings will be cherished by her children and grandkids for years to come. Marilyn was also a great baker; her homemade pies were always greatly anticipated and requested by many. She enjoyed making them to share with friends as thank you or just because she was thinking about you. Marilyn had a big heart and a host of talents, but her biggest joy was her grandkids and sharing time with them. She instilled her love for games and playing cards with all of them. She loved playing cards, especially rummy, and had her own version (Gma’s Rummy) where the rules could change at “Gma's” discretion. Cards brought her a lot of joy and camaraderie, and she was always up for another hand, usually outlasting everyone. Her generosity of her time and involvement in the local groups and activities gave her the opportunity to develop countless friendships throughout the community, she valued these friendships greatly and truly cherished spending time with her friends and relatives. The beloved Sacred Heart “coffee group” was a constant over the last 30+ years, and a great source of sharing faith, deep friendships and lots of fun. She loved her family roots and always looked forward to spending time with her brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, childhood friends and countless God children. Always being a very detailed and organized person, she was the natural organizer of many family and school reunions. Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband Duane of 60 years; parents; her beloved daughter Brenda; and siblings Cletus Depperschmidt, Gerald Depperschmidt, Kathy Woerpel, and Linda Waddell. She is survived by her children Blaine (Vonceile) of Lindsborg, KS, and Becky (Scot) Bullock of Leawood, KS; grandchildren Hanna (Trevor) Whittaker, Clare Bullock, Colby Bullock, Blake Heble, Carly Bullock, and Brandt Heble; great-grandson Brooks Whittaker; and brothers Les (Connie) Depperschmidt of Derby, KS, Marvin (Norma) Depperschmidt of Salina, KS and Ken (Diane) Depperschmidt of Smith Center, KS. William F. “Bill” Wilson passed away on Thursday, November 10, 2022, 
at the Red Bud Village in Plainville, Kansas, at the age of 96. He was 
born on March 23, 1926, in Salyards, Kansas, to Virgil and Ethel (Snyder)
 Wilson. Bill was united in marriage to Eleanora (Meredith) Wilson on 
March 18, 1949, in Plainville at the United Methodist Church. To this 
union the couple was blessed with two children: Rick and Susan.

Bill
 grew up on the family farm in Gorham, Kansas. He was drafted into the 
United States Army Air Corps (that later became the US Air Force) as a 
senior in high school in 1944 and earned an Honorable Diploma. Bill was 
honorably discharged on July 4, 1946 and returned to the family farm in 
Gorham until he found work in the oil field. Eleanora Meredith danced 
into Bill’s life in 1949 at a local jig and the couple was married that 
same year. In 1955 they moved to Plainville where Bill worked for an 
auto supply company and farmed. He was a true outdoorsman; he lived to 
hunt, camp and absolutely loved fishing. Following Eleanora and his 
retirement, they enjoyed traveling around in their RV camping with 
friends and having big cookouts. He was a faithful member to the Masonic
 Lodge for 70 years, the Plainville Fire Department, American Legion and
 Eastern Star.

Bill was a hardworking, loving, and 
dedicated family man. He loved what he did and did what he loved. 
Although he will be greatly missed, his life, his love, and his legacy 
will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

He
 is survived by his children, Rick Wilson (Armaine De-Vela) of Manhattan
 Beach, CA, and Susan (David) Holt of Iron Station, NC; grandchildren, 
Briana (Adam) Johnson, Devin Holt, Sean Holt; and two 
great-grandchildren, Ben and Sammy Johnson.

at the Red Bud Village in Plainville, Kansas, at the age of 96. He was 
born on March 23, 1926, in Salyards, Kansas, to Virgil and Ethel (Snyder)
 Wilson. Bill was united in marriage to Eleanora (Meredith) Wilson on 
March 18, 1949, in Plainville at the United Methodist Church. To this 
union the couple was blessed with two children: Rick and Susan.Bill
 grew up on the family farm in Gorham, Kansas. He was drafted into the 
United States Army Air Corps (that later became the US Air Force) as a 
senior in high school in 1944 and earned an Honorable Diploma. Bill was 
honorably discharged on July 4, 1946 and returned to the family farm in 
Gorham until he found work in the oil field. Eleanora Meredith danced 
into Bill’s life in 1949 at a local jig and the couple was married that 
same year. In 1955 they moved to Plainville where Bill worked for an 
auto supply company and farmed. He was a true outdoorsman; he lived to 
hunt, camp and absolutely loved fishing. Following Eleanora and his 
retirement, they enjoyed traveling around in their RV camping with 
friends and having big cookouts. He was a faithful member to the Masonic
 Lodge for 70 years, the Plainville Fire Department, American Legion and
 Eastern Star.Bill was a hardworking, loving, and 
dedicated family man. He loved what he did and did what he loved. 
Although he will be greatly missed, his life, his love, and his legacy 
will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.He
 is survived by his children, Rick Wilson (Armaine De-Vela) of Manhattan
 Beach, CA, and Susan (David) Holt of Iron Station, NC; grandchildren, 
Briana (Adam) Johnson, Devin Holt, Sean Holt; and two

Donald J. “Desmo Don” Kitchen, 87, Hays, died Friday, May 12, 2023 at Russell Regional Hospital.

He was born June 28, 1935 in Hays, the son of George and Barbara (Keberlein) Kitchen. 

He graduated from Hays High School, and on December 29, 1956 he was united in marriage to Jeanette Wiesner. They later divorced, and she preceded him in death on September 24, 2020. 

Don learned to be a machinist from his father, and for more than 30 years, owned and operated Kitchen Cycle and Machine. He was a property developer, built electric cars, and used his many talents remodeling the I.M. Yost Cement Mill into living quarters and a shop. 

Don loved animals, especially his beloved dog Jack, and he enjoyed big band and jazz music. He was a drummer in several bands including the Jimmy Maxwell Quartet, and always had a good time with fellow musicians when they gathered and listened to music at his shop on Saturdays.

Survivors include his three sons, Mark Kitchen and wife Millie of Aurora, CO, Marshall Kitchen and wife Brenda of Hays, and Brent Kitchen and wife Shelly of Olathe; two daughters, Kim Betts and husband Mike of Hays and Mindi Pfannenstiel and husband Marty of Mulvane; 17 grandchildren, Dustin Kitchen and wife Robin, Brenden and Taylor Kitchen, Blake Kitchen and wife Tanya, Brian Kitchen and wife Allison, Kayla Landers and husband Jake, Dylan, Bailey, and Gage Kitchen, Sheldon Betts and wife Niki, Clay, Taylor, and Jordan Betts, Austin, Chayton, Easton, and Maci Pfannenstiel; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and William Kitchen; and two sisters, Mary Jane Roper and Patricia Kitchen.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Richard Daise officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 on Tuesday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Wednesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. A vigil service and rosary will be at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Wayne Lynn Walz, a life-long resident of Oakley, passed away Friday morning, May 12, 2023, at Littleton Adventist Hospital, Littleton, Colorado, at age 71. Wayne was diagnosed with Complicated Traumatic Brain Injury, following a fall, and subsequently developed a pneumonia complication. He liked to inform his friends that he was retired, following an award from Developmental Service of Northwest Kansas for his entrepreneurial enterprise Windows by Wayne. He enjoyed coyote hunting, swimming, fishing, pitch, checkers, traveling, and being his dad’s right hand through the years. Wayne was fiercely independent, loved his community, and was at peace and pain-free with family at his side in passing.

He was preceded in death by his mother Leah M. Walz, his father Floyd M. Walz, brother Roger M. Walz, and sisters-in-law Lila Walz and Kathy Walz. The family wishes to thank his primary care physician, Doug Gruenbacher, including Logan County Hospital, Logan County Health Department, Ruth Clark, and Vanessa and Scott Wellbrock.

Mark Chester Fouquet, age 72, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2023, at his home in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on September 8, 1950, to Chester M. and Dorothy Dean Fouquet in Garden City, Kansas. 

He was a lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas where he owned and operated Fouquet Insurance Agency.

He was a member of the Lake Scott Car Club, an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America, a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City, Kansas, and a sergeant in the United States Army, having served in Vietnam.&nbsp;

On November 20, 1971, he married Terri Lynne Snyder in his hometown of Scott City. She survives.

Survivors include his wife, daughters Rebecca and Shane Faurot of Scott City, Kansas, Monica Fouquet of Valley Center, Kansas, sons Dan and Sharla Fouquet of Cheney, Kansas, Mike and Patti Fouquet of Scott City, Kansas, sisters Ronna and Ron Cunningham of Black Diamond, Washington, Anna and Jon Crane of Scott City, Kansas, brothers Dean and Kim Fouquet of Missouri, Joe and Brenda Fouquet of Oklahoma, 11 grandchildren, Emily Faurot, Marshall Faurot, Loren Faurot, Carson Faurot, Tim and Chelsea Fouquet, Claire Fouquet, Adelle Fouquet, Lucy Fouquet, Henry Fouquet, Jess West, Matt West; two great-grandchildren, Hunter and River West; and many nieces and nephews.

Bernice Regina (Schandler) Becker passed away on May 11, 2023 at the Andbe Home in Norton, Kansas, at the age of 94. She was born on October 28, 1928, in San Juan, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley to Bernard and Clara (Grimm) Schandler. 

Her parents farmed ten acres of irrigated citrus and vegetables. In 1935 they moved to New Almelo, Kansas, where their children attended the St. Joseph Catholic grade school. Bernice attended the Catholic parochial high schools in Leoville for one year and Tipton for three years. 

In Tipton, Henry Becker, a marine returning home from serving duty in the Pacific Islands during WWII, saw Bernice and stated: “I’m going to marry that girl.” He was the love of her life. They were married on August 4, 1948. 

To this union 10 children were born: Joyce Wentz (Russ Haring-companion-deceased), Tonganoxie; Henry (Monika Biehl-deceased), Brenken, Germany; Eugene (Deborah Warren), Tonganoxie; Debra Bienhoff (Paul), Kensington; Edna Mader (Dennis), Collyer; Paul (Linda Sansom), Lenora; John (Ann Yiesley-deceased), Lenora; Elaine McCrary (Wayne), Hutchinson; Judy Koelling (Kirk), Russell; Christopher (Gina Young), Manhattan. 

After farming several years in Tipton, they purchased an acreage eleven miles south of Norton, Kansas, and moved there with their three children to continue their farming/ranch operation until Henry’s death on June 6, 1985, after 36 years of marriage.

Bernice was a faithful Catholic, loving wife and mother, and dedicated community member. When needed, she assisted Henry with the farm, making trips to the elevator with truckloads of harvested grain, and later drove a school bus route for 14 years. 

Her life was full with celebrations: baptisms, confirmations, graduations, and weddings-first for her children and then grandchildren. Henry and Bernice made several trips together before his death. They would go to conventions for their organizations and made several trips to Germany. 

After Henry’s death, her daughter Joyce went with her on several tours, including one to the Holy Land in Israel. With a church group she spent two weeks a year for four years to help build a church in Lourdes, Costa Rica. Years of preparing meals for her large family help train her in her most significant and long-lasting volunteer duty – St. Francis of Assisi Parish Funeral Dinner Chairman. 

She was an active member of many organizations: Altar Society, Legion of Mary, Salina Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, a local photographer for the Diocesan Catholic paper, 4-H project leader, American Legion Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, local Republican organization, Farm Bureau Committee, and facilitator for Norton County Prison “Promise Keepers.”

Bernice was preceded in death by her husband Henry Becker; parents Bernard and Clara Schandler; sister Mary Margaret Schandler; sisters and spouses Marge and Jim Hickert, Lorene and Charles Meyer; sister-in-law Patricia Schandler; daughters-in law Monika Becker and Ann Becker; companion Russ Haring; grandson Brian Mader; great-grandson Gabriel Mader.

She is survived by her 10 children and their seven spouses; 34 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren; brothers Eugene Schandler, Logan and Robert Schandler (Pam), Overland Park.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 18, 2023 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Norton. Burial will follow in the Norton Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 17 at the funeral home with family receiving friends from 5-7:00 p.m. A rosary and vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m.

In 1935 they moved to New Almelo, Kansas, where their children attended the St. Joseph Catholic grade school. Bernice attended the Catholic parochial high schools in Leoville for one year and Tipton for three years. In Tipton, Henry Becker, a marine returning home from serving duty in the Pacific Islands during WWII, saw Bernice and stated: “I’m going to marry that girl.” He was the love of her life. They were married on August 4, 1948. To this union 10 children were born: Joyce Wentz (Russ Haring-companion-deceased), Tonganoxie; Henry (Monika Biehl-deceased), Brenken, Germany; Eugene (Deborah Warren), Tonganoxie; Debra Bienhoff (Paul), Kensington; Edna Mader (Dennis), Collyer; Paul (Linda Sansom), Lenora; John (Ann Yiesley-deceased), Lenora; Elaine McCrary (Wayne), Hutchinson; Judy Koelling (Kirk), Russell; Christopher (Gina Young), Manhattan. After farming several years in Tipton, they purchased an acreage eleven miles south of Norton, Kansas, and moved there with their three children to continue their farming/ranch operation until Henry’s death on June 6, 1985, after 36 years of marriage.Bernice was a faithful Catholic, loving wife and mother, and dedicated community member. When needed, she assisted Henry with the farm, making trips to the elevator with truckloads of harvested grain, and later drove a school bus route for 14 years. Her life was full with celebrations: baptisms, confirmations, graduations, and weddings-first for her children and then grandchildren. Henry and Bernice made several trips together before his death. They would go to conventions for their organizations and made several trips to Germany. After Henry’s death, her daughter Joyce went with her on several tours, including one to the Holy Land in Israel. With a church group she spent two weeks a year for four years to help build a church in Lourdes, Costa Rica. Years of preparing meals for her large family help train her in her most significant and long-lasting volunteer duty – St. Francis of Assisi Parish Funeral Dinner Chairman. She was an active member of many organizations: Altar Society, Legion of Mary, Salina Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, a local photographer for the Diocesan Catholic paper, 4-H project leader, American Legion Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, local Republican organization, Farm Bureau Committee, and facilitator for Norton County Prison “Promise Keepers.”Bernice was preceded in death by her husband Henry Becker; parents Bernard and Clara Schandler; sister Mary Margaret Schandler; sisters and spouses Marge and Jim Hickert, Lorene and Charles Meyer; sister-in-law Patricia Schandler; daughters-in law Monika Becker and Ann Becker; companion Russ Haring; grandson Brian Mader; great-grandson Gabriel Mader.She is survived by her 10 children and their seven spouses; 34 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren; brothers Eugene Schandler, Logan and Robert Schandler (Pam), Overland Park.Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 18, 2023 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Norton. Kathryn Jo Damm, 70, passed away May 10, 2023 at Hays Med in Hays, Kansas.

&nbsp;She was born June 2, 1952, in Larned, Kansas, the daughter of Robert and Betty Johannes Robbins.

&nbsp;A lifetime area resident, she was a preschool teacher, loved scrapbooking, spending time with grandkids and enjoyed sending cards for every occasion. She was a Girl Scout leader and member of Business and Professional Women’s Association.

&nbsp;On April 2, 1974 she married Michael Gene Damm at Larned. He survives.

&nbsp;Other survivors include son Mark (Jessica) Damm, North Carolina; sisters Kasey (Tom) Lane, Larned, and Kelly (David Fyler) Robbins, Scott City; two grandchildren, Mike and Jason Damm, North Carolina.

&nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Kristy Damm-Edwards; sister Kerry Robbins.

&nbsp;Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned with Pastor Jarred Smith presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, May 15, 2023 at Beckwith Mortuary with family present from 5-7 p.m. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery.

Carol Jean Vanatta, 65, died Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She was born December 16, 1957, in Fort Bragg, North Carolina the daughter of Larry and Shirley Klotz. Carol was raised in Liberal and graduated from Holcomb High School in 1975. She graduated from Dodge City Community College and became a registered nurse.

Her hobbies were cooking, cleaning, and traveling. She loved listening to country music. Survivors include her son Casey Vanatta of Lamberton, MN, siblings Barbara Huddleston of Scottsdale, AZ, Doug and Susan Dubose, Victor and Christie Klotz of Holcomb, KS, Lisa and Brad Schimke of Garden City, KS.

She is preceded in death by her husband Ralph Eugene Vanatta, parents Larry and Shirley Klotz and her brother Gary Lee Klotz. A memorial service will be held at a later date. There is no visitation.
