LaJuan McCartney passed away May 8, 2023 at the Logan Manor in Logan at the age of 87.

LaJuan (Hill) McCartney was born on the farm near Hughes Springs, Texas to Samuel Moses and Clara Evelyn (Rowe) Hill on April 15, 1936. She was originally the 10th&nbsp;of eleven children, but when her mother passed away and her dad remarried, she had two younger brothers that were added to the family. 

She graduated from Hughes Springs high school and after graduation moved to Dallas, TX to join the workforce. 

It was in Dallas at church where she met her husband Ronald McCartney. They were married in Dallas on Nov 25, 1955.

The couple had a daughter, Patricia Renee McCartney, in Texas. They moved to Kansas in 1960, where Ron was from. While in Kensington, KS they had two boys Samuel James and Mark Raphael. 

LaJuan worked as wife and homemaker while the kids were growing up. She was an excellent seamstress and made clothes and blankets for people. She taught classes on sewing, knitting, and crocheting for 4-H kids. She raised gardens, canned vegetables, and helped in the community. 

She was active in the Assembly of God church, initially in Kensington, then Phillipsburg, and most recently in Heartland Worship Center where she attended. 

After the kids were grown, LaJuan worked at the hospital as a ward clerk. She was honored for 10+ years of service. 

After her retirement she spent most of her time at home, taking care of the house and sewing clothes for family and quilts for gifts. She handquilted all the quilts that she gave away.

Survivors include her daughter Patricia McCartney of Phillipsburg; sons Samuel of Dayton, OH and Mark of Phillipsburg; her brother Lonnie Hill of Lone Star, TX; sister Pansy Short of Dangerfield, TX; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 12 at 10:00 a.m. in the Heartland Worship Center, Agra, with Pastor Chris Baker officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp;The service will be streamed live on the Heartland Worship Center Facebook page.&nbsp;&nbsp;Burial will follow in the Agra Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 Wednesday and 9:00 to 9:00 Thursday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel with the family receiving friends from 7:00 to 8:00 Thursday evening.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Heartland Worship Center.

Verdyne G. Kugler, at the age of 82 passed away on May 16th, 2023 at the Osborne County Memorial Hospital. She was born December 15th 1940 at the Smith Center Memorial Hospital.

Preceded in death by her parents Floyd and Fern (Gove); sister Valjean Ellis (Kugler); brother,Terry Kugler; niece Rachel West (Ellis); and nephew Tim Ellis (Danielle).

She is survived by her nephews Steve Ellis (Melinda), of Gulfport Mississippi and children Trevor, Mason, and Alyssa; Mark Ellis (Cari) of Carl Junction, Missouri and children Logan, Preston and Grant; Rachel’s children Clayton and Brian; Tim’s children Martha, Sarah, and James; great-great-nieces and nephews and cousins.

Verdyne attended Smith Center High School, graduating in 1959. 

Verdyne first worked at Hawes Drug then at Gibson Chiropractic. She ended her career as a ward clerk at Smith Center Memorial Hospital.

She and her brother Terry lived in their family home with their parents. Later they both cared for their parents, Floyd and Fern, during their final years. Verdyne lived in the Kugler family home until late 2020, when she decided it was better for her to spend the rest of her golden years at the Park View Care Center.

Verdyne faithfully attended the Church of the Nazarene and Bible study classes as well as she was part of the church choir. She was an active member at church, making many friends and enjoyed the fellowship. Going to gospel concerts was one of her favorite past times that she looked forward to attending with her sister.

Verdyne enjoyed walking, her friend, Rhonda said they walked everywhere together. Her username was “walksalot.” On Sunday' she would often eat with her friend Dietra and watch Gathers music. For two years she participated in a ladies night. Thirl, Charmin, Rose, Helen, Rhonda, Phyllis, and Verdyne would meet every Friday night and play card games or dominoes. Verdyne’s baked goodies were always a hit.

Family reunions were a particularly favorite time for her and she greatly enjoyed visiting and catching up with family members that didn’t live close to her. The Watermelon Festival was another event that she enjoyed every year. Doing cross word searches was another activity she enjoyed.

Verdyne was very well known for her cooking and baking skills, such as her applesauce brownies that were a particular favorite with her family. Another favorite was divinity candy and melt in your mouth cream cheese cookies she made every year during the holidays.

She enjoyed spending time with her sister, Valjean, niece, nephews and great-nieces and nephews, making frequent trips to visit them in Wichita. Likewise, the family also made frequent trips to see her in Smith Center. She always welcomed all family and was a gracious host, who fed and cared for everyone. She loved her dogs, Tippy and Scrappy, taking them on her visits.

Verdyne had a heart full of gold. She touched many lives and we were all fortunate enough to know her. Always ready with kind, encouraging words, as well as wisdom. Verdyne always went out of her way to be there for anyone that needed her, ready and willing to lend a helping hand. She will be and is already greatly missed by her family and friends.

Rebecca L. Kersenbrock (Jain) passed away peacefully Sunday, May 7, 2023, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Oberlin, Kansas. She was born September 13, 1939, to Ralph and Ada (Foster) Jain in Colby, Kansas. She was 83 years old. Becky graduated from Colby Senior High School in 1957 and married the love of her life, Jerry Kersenbrock, on April 21, 1962. They spent their lives together farming the ground where Jerry had grown up north of Colby, Kansas. Becky lived a full and happy life serving her beloved Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

After graduating from high school, she worked at KXXX radio, at a drafting and engineering business owned by George McKee, and later in life at Prairie Senior Living Complex in Colby as a seamstress. 

Her lifelong passion, however, was being a wife and mother to her family on the farm. Her hobbies included ham radio where she was known as WᴓVGE. She was often seen knitting booties for all of the babies in her life. Becky was very active in the churches she attended and volunteered as a Sunday School teacher, piano and organ player, and held other positions of leadership. She greatly enjoyed making birthday cakes for her children and grandchildren, always being certain to make them individualized for each one. Becky had a true servant’s heart that showed when she meticulously and lovingly mended her family’s clothing. One of her greatest joys was being a pioneer in the homeschooling movement when she taught her youngest son from grade 1 through grade 12. Becky was preceded in death by her parents and twin infant daughters, Karen and Kolene Kersenbrock. She is survived by her husband Jerry; sons Cory (Kyleen) Kersenbrock of Ellsworth, Kansas, David (Beth) Kersenbrock of McCook, Nebraska, and Jeremy (Amber) Kersenbrock of the family farm in Colby, Kansas; daughters Peggy (Kelly) Hess of Vernon, Texas, and Lois (Daniel) O’Brien of Colby, Kansas; 12 grandchildren, Caleb, Kelissa, Krista, Shayleen, John, Brock, Cosette, Luke, Kara, Levi, Isaac and Ethan; one great-grandchild Lynna; brother Gilbert Jain and sister Martha Wood; and many nieces and nephews and other loved ones. Norman B. Voigt, 81, passed away peacefully on May 8th, 2023, at Citizens Medical Center in Colby. He was born April 3rd, 1942, in Adrian, Minnesota to Ida (Finck) and Elden Voigt. He enjoyed many careers including being a librarian, teacher, running a dairy farm, owning a skating rink, managing restaurants, owning a furniture store, operating vending machines, and doing handyman work. In August 1982, he married Carol (Fritz) Terrell. To this union came a biological daughter and five adopted children. Norman enjoyed singing, woodworking, fishing, hunting, spending time in the outdoors, and cheering on the Dallas Cowboys. He also lived in many places, including Avon, SD, Palestine, TX, Corsicana, TX, and Ozark, AR. In 2020 he moved to Colby to be near his daughter.

While in Colby, he appreciated the ministry and friendship of many in the Berean Bible Fellowship. The family would also like to express deep appreciation to his primary doctor, Dr. Dan Kuhlman, and all of the wonderful staff of the Citizens Medical Center in Colby. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lorraine, and daughter Emma. He is survived by three sisters; daughter Marla Voigt of Dallas, TX; daughter Amber (Jeremy) Kersenbrock of Colby; son Alberto Voigt of Ozark AR; daughter Marivel (Michael) Ruhl of Dardanelle, AR; son Russel Voigt; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Christine Louise Hudson, 74, of McPherson, KS, went to heaven to meet Jesus Wednesday, May 17, 2023, in Lindsborg, KS, after battling with cancer.&nbsp; She was born January 13, 1949, in Great Bend, KS, the daughter of Eldon and Dorothy (Ade) Folmnsbee.&nbsp; 

She graduated high school from Great Bend, KS and college from Fort Hays State University with her teaching degree.

While in college, she met her husband, Thomas (Tom) Eugene Hudson, and married him on August 30, 1969.&nbsp; During their wonderful 53 years of marriage, Christine and Tom had four children and lived in many towns all over Kansas while working in education.&nbsp; 

Christine taught preschool, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, middle school, and ended her career as a reading tutor when they came to retire in McPherson.&nbsp; Teaching came natural to Christine.&nbsp; She was always the patient and kind teacher who loved her students like her own.&nbsp; 

She was a wife, homemaker, mother, teacher, sister, and everything in between, but her favorite title was Grammy.&nbsp; When her two grandchildren were born, she officially retired from education and took on the full-time role as a grandmother.&nbsp; She loved taking care of the kids as babies and watching them grow.&nbsp; 

Christine was also very involved in the church through her life and always led with her faith in everything she did.&nbsp; Some of Christine’s favorite hobbies were church activities, watching her favorite mystery series, reading/going to the library, golfing with Tom, walking, shopping, playing card games with family and friends, and supporting grandkids at all their events.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her son Andrew Christian Hudson, and her parent, Eldon and Dorothy Folmnsbee.

Christine is survived by her husband Tom Hudson of McPherson and three children, Brad Hudson of McPherson, Brett Hudson of McPherson, and Amy Gilkey (Adam) of McPherson; one brother, Gary Folmnsbee (Cathy) of Oklahoma City, OK; and two grandchildren, Finn and Addison Gilkey, and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at the First Baptist Church, 600 E. Marlin St., McPherson, KS.&nbsp; Private family inurnment will follow at Farmington Cemetery in Macksville, KS, at 3:00 p.m..&nbsp; The family will greet friends on Tuesday, May 23, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Stockham Family Funeral Home.

Rev. Garry Ray Dassow passed into eternal Glory on May 17, 2023, in Hoisington, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He was the fifth of seven boys born to Bernard and Elaine (Fischer) Dassow on October 31, 1939, in Medford, Wisconsin.&nbsp;&nbsp;Growing up on the family farm was hard, but Garry fondly told of the shenanigans he and his brothers would get into.&nbsp;&nbsp;Those stories often included an old tractor, a rickety wagon, a load of hay, or a pile of wood.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Garry was baptized on November 19, 1939, and confirmed on July 27, 1952, at Trinity Lutheran Church on Dassow Avenue in Medford, Wisconsin.&nbsp;&nbsp;His confirmation verse was 1 Timothy 6:12:&nbsp;&nbsp;Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

During confirmation classes, the Holy Spirit began to draw Garry towards ministry, and his Pastor encouraged him to pursue it.&nbsp;&nbsp;Garry graduated in 1957 from Lutheran High School and in 1959 from Concordia Junior College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1961, Garry received his Bachelor of Pre-Theology from Concordia Senior College in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and in 1965, his Master of Sacred Theology from St. Louis (Concordia Theological) Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri.&nbsp;&nbsp;

His year of vicarage was spent at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa.&nbsp;&nbsp;While there, he met his future wife, Janet Sizer.&nbsp;&nbsp;They were married on August 8, 1965, at Zion Lutheran Church in Kearney, Nebraska.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pastor Dassow’s first call in 1965 was to serve dual parishes in Nebraska: Christ Lutheran Church in Nebraska City and Trinity Lutheran Church in Auburn.&nbsp;&nbsp;While in Nebraska, son Matthew and daughter Bethany were born.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1972, the family moved to Emmetsburg, Iowa, where Pastor Dassow served at St. Paul Lutheran Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;While in Iowa, son Craig joined the family.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1978, they moved to Hoisington where Pastor Dassow served at Concordia Lutheran Church for 27 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;While there, son Tyler completed their family.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Pastor Dassow loved being part of a preschool, teaching confirmation classes, helping with VBS, and creating annual Labor Day parade floats.&nbsp;&nbsp;Although officially retired in 2005, Pastor Dassow continued serving as interim pastor at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Great Bend, Kansas, until his second retirement in 2017.&nbsp;&nbsp;In over 50 years of ministry, Pastor Dassow only missed two regular services he was scheduled to conduct.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pastor Dassow was a 45-year member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Hoisington and a dear friend to Our Savior Lutheran Church in Great Bend.&nbsp;

Garry was very active in the community.&nbsp;&nbsp;He had been an advisory board member for Hoisington Lutheran Hospital and later served as a foundation member for Clara Barton Hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp;Garry also served as a board member for the Family Recovery Center and the Cardinal Apartments.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a member of Main Street Inc. as well as the Hoisington Kiwanis Club, often helping with the kiddie cars during Labor Day festivities.&nbsp;&nbsp;Garry helped operate “Get Involved Before Your Kids Do” and worked with D.A.R.E. and the Uptown Youth Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;He also volunteered at the Hoisington Food Bank and was the CROP Hunger Hike chairman for many years, often participating in their six-mile walks.&nbsp;&nbsp;Garry was named Hoisington’s 1992 Citizen of the Year, the first minister to be recognized for outstanding service to the community.&nbsp;

In his free time, Garry liked to keep things going and was often servicing old lawnmowers and bicycles; sanding and staining used furniture; fixing leaking faucets and running toilets; and swapping out and replacing floor tiles in the church basement.&nbsp;&nbsp;Garry would offer to help anyone in need.&nbsp;&nbsp;He enjoyed woodworking; square dancing and traveling after retirement; playing games (especially Sheepshead with family in Wisconsin); and singing songs, reading books, and telling stories to his young grandchildren.&nbsp;

Preceding him to heaven were his parents; brothers Larry (Annamae) Dassow, Eugene Dassow, and Duane Dassow; and longtime companion Selma Webb.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Left to cherish his memory on earth are his children Matt (Lynn) Dassow of Missouri City, Texas; Beth (Gene) Perry of Axtell, Kansas; Craig Dassow of Salina, Kansas; and Tyler (Rachel) Dassow of Vancouver, Washington.&nbsp;&nbsp;Garry also leaves granddaughters Kate Perry, Cheyenne Chapin, Sierra Perry, Elina Dassow, Addison Dassow, and Kelby Dassow; great-grandson Zayden; great-granddaughter Victoria; brothers Harvey (Arlene) Dassow of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, Everett Dassow of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Delmar (Helen) Dassow of Stetsonville, Wisconsin; and sister-in-law Peggy Dassow of Burlington, Wisconsin.

&nbsp;The family thanks the staff of Credo (Country Place) Senior Living in Hoisington for their outstanding care of Garry since 2019 as well as the staff of Kindred Hospice for their loving support.&nbsp;

Peggy Jo Cooley, 77, passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at her home in Healy, KS. She was born on January 5, 1946, in Dighton, KS, to Leonard George &amp; Lillian Mary (Hunsley) Burnett. She was the youngest of five girls and one brother. Peggy grew up in Dighton, where she was active in 4-H all through high school. She enjoyed music and gymnastics. Peggy graduated from Dighton High School in 1964.

On June 21, 1964, she married Archie G. Cooley in Dighton. Through the years, they lived in Norton, Shields, Dighton, and Ulysses. In 1974, they moved to Healy. 

Peggy was a busy housewife, but she also worked outside of the home at Dighton Sale Barn, Healy Grocery deli department and the school cafeteria in Healy. 

She was a member of the Healy Methodist Church and enjoyed taking care of children in the nursery. She also enjoyed water skiing, gardening, sewing, and quilting. She made quilts for her children and grandchildren out of old family clothes. She loved dancing, singing, and listening to country music. Everyone enjoyed watching her and Archie dance. They seldom missed a dance in the area. She is survived by her three children, Calvin Cooley of Arvada, CO, Jody Cooley of Garden City, KS, and Selena and Rod Dusek of Cawker City, KS; two sisters, Betty Terhune of Dighton, and Elsie Pitts of Manhattan, KS; seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild on the way. Peggy was preceded in death by her husband Archie on November 7, 2010; her parents, her two sisters, Mary Moore and Sarah Fuller, her brothers, Leonard Burnett, Jr. and an infant. The funeral service will be held Monday, May 22 at 10:30 a.m. at the Healy Methodist Church with Reverend Bud Tuxhorn officiating. The service will be on the church’s Facebook page. Katherine Ann Usher, of Wilson, Kansas, passed away on May 18, 2023, at her home at Wilson Lake, at the age of 60. She was born on May 14, 1963, to Charles and Norma (Spurgin) Windle in Falls City, Nebraska. 

She was married on August 7, 2008, to Rex Usher in Dalhart, Texas.

She owned and operated Hell Creek Cabins at Wilson Lake. In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Funeral service will be held Monday, May 22, 2023, at 10 a.m., at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Wilson. Burial will follow at Wilson City Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the funeral service at 9 a.m., at the funeral home in Wilson.

Richard Thomas “Dick” Bedard, age 79, of Wichita, Kansas passed away May 16, 2023 at Wesley on Woodlawn in Wichita. He was born January the 14, 1944 in Hays , Kansas to Levi and O’della (Newell) Bedard. 

On December 30, 1965 he was united in marriage to Janelle Ann Lorbeer in St. Joseph’s Church in Hays. Dick was a longtime employee of Midwest Energy where he worked for 40 years. After retiring from Midwest Energy, he began working for Lowes in Wichita along with his wife, Janelle.

Dick was an avid KU Jayhawk, Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals fan and he enjoyed doing yard work.&nbsp; Dick was a man of strong faith whose family was important to him.&nbsp; 

He was a proud U.S. Army veteran and was a member of Saint Catherine of Siena in Wichita and a Knights of Columbus Third Degree member. Richard Thomas 'Dick' Bedard

HANSTON – Douglas A. “Doug” Meier, 73, passed away May 17, 2023 at Hodgeman County Health Center, Jetmore, KS.

He was born July 18, 1949 in Hays, KS, the son of Milton Edward and Theresa M. Weber Meier. He moved to Hanston in October 2022 from Graham, WA. 

Doug graduated from United States Military Academy at West Point, NY with an engineering degree and served the nation as an officer in the United States Army. After serving as an officer in the military, he was a project manager for IDEMIA, where he did forensic fingerprint identification.

He was of the Christian faith, head deacon at Church for All Nations, Tacoma, WA and currently attended the Faith Fellowship Church in Hanston. He was the vice president of Oil of Joy Ministries, an outreach mission to India, where one of his favorite pastimes was treating the orphans with ice cream. He enjoyed golfing, reading, carpentry and woodworking, building his own homes and fine furniture.

On June 12, 1971, he married Virginia J. Capece in Philadelphia, PA. She survives.

Other survivors include daughter Wendy (Mike) Halvorsen, Hanston; son Craig (Mandy) Meier, Puyallup, WA; two brothers, Howard (Jane) Meier, Great Bend, Steve (Carla) Meier, Hays; sister Sue (TR) May, Hays; six grandchildren, Nicole (Jamison) Leckenby, Michele (Jason) Zink, Michael Halvorsen Jr., Kristen (Evan) Doyle, Caleb Meier, Riley Meier; three great-grandchildren, Joseph Zink, Zachariah Zink and Timothy Zink.

He was born on March 4, 1983, in Pella, IA, the son of Dean Edward and Beverly Sue (Rouw) Ayers.&nbsp; 

He graduated from Twin Cedars High School (Bussey, IA) in 2002 and from McPherson College in 2007. &nbsp;He continued his education at Bethany Seminary in Richmond, IN. &nbsp;

On June 6, 2009, Mat was united in marriage to Emily Elizabeth Flora in Quinter, KS.&nbsp; This union was blessed with four children, Veda, Dane, Everly, and Logan.

Mat was a light inspection trainer at Pfizer and worked part-time at Three Rings Brewery, both in McPherson.

A loving father, Mat enjoyed spending his time with the kids; playing Minecraft, watching movies, camping, and having adventures of all types. He loved spending his time with friends and family, and was always willing to sit down, perhaps with a drink and enjoy life. Whether it was faith, travel, homesteading, renovating, or life’s troubles or joys, Mat was always ready to listen, discuss, and plan the next adventure that life had in store.

Mat was a member of the McPherson Church of the Brethren.

PAWNEE ROCK – Eric L. Roof, 73, passed away May 15, 2023 at Hays Medical Center in Hays.

He was born September 26, 1949 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of George and Dorothy Scott Roof.

A longtime area resident he was a safety and security officer at Larned State Hospital and served in the United States Army and United States Navy. 

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and VFW, both of Larned. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, taking walks around Pawnee Rock with his dog Jaden, and watching and playing baseball.

On July 8, 1972 he married Nicki Rae Selsor at Larned; she preceded him in death on May 9, 2018.

Survivors include son Michael Roof, Gardner; grandson Nolan Christopher Roof, Gardner; sister Diane Weiser, Lincoln, Nebraska; two sisters-in-law, Sherry Nelson, Lincolnville, Judy Watson, Rose Hill; three brothers-in-law, John Selsor, Bowie, Texas, Darrell Selsor, Wichita, Forrest Selsor, Junction City; three cousins, Larry Brayton, Topeka, Kim and Richard Brayton, Lyons, Daniel Brayton, Oklahoma; aunt Sue Brower, Lyons; and other extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Nicki, and a son, Christopher Roof.

Deneva Jo Steinert, 57, passed away surrounded by loved ones on May 17, 2023, at Ellinwood District Hospital, Ellinwood, Kan. She was born on May 19, 1965, to Daniel and Dolores (Raab) Sullivan in Great Bend, Kan.

A life-time resident of Great Bend, Deneva dedicated herself to taking care of her family and was all about her grandkids.&nbsp;

Survivors include two daughters, Starla Willenberg and Jennifer Willenberg; six grandchildren, Hali, Kaden, Auna, Briella, Kamron and Trenton; two brothers, Devin Sullivan and Delton Sullivan; numerous nieces and nephews; and many additional loved ones. 

She is preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Danny Phil Sullivan.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be set at a later date. 

Memorials have been designated to the Golden Belt Humane Society or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Rosetta E. Garnand, 96, died Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at The Ranch House in Garden City, Kansas. She was born February 16, 1927, in Larned, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph O. and Pearl (Butts) Jarboe. Rosetta grew up in Larned, Kansas where she attended schools and graduated from high school.

On November 12, 1946, she married Kelsey D. Garnand in Larned, Kansas. They have lived in Garden City since. 

A homemaker, Rosetta was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, the Happy Homemakers, EHU, and the Twin Mother’s Club. She also volunteered her time serving on the election board, served as a Den Mother, working at Dr. Fry’s office, and cleaning their rental properties. Rosetta enjoyed spending her time crocheting, knitting, decorating and baking for the holidays, making Halloween cookies, growing flowers, word search puzzles, playing games, and watching Wheel of Fortune and Impractical Jokers. She also loved to spend time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Survivors include four children, Danny Garnand of Guthrie, Oklahoma, Jolene Novack of Garden City, Kansas, Janel and husband Greg Haflich of Garden City, Kansas, and DeWain Garnand of Garden City, Kansas; a daughter-in-law Janice Garnand of Overland Park, Kansas; three sisters, Venita Patzell of Manhattan, Kansas, Mary Will of Wichita, Kansas, and Cheryl Robertson of Wichita, Kansas; 21 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren with one more on the way; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Rosetta is preceded in death by her husband Kelsey who died on April 22, 2010. She is also preceded in death by her parents; son David Garnand; daughter-in-law Debbie Garnand; son-in-law Danny Novack; brothers Robert Jarboe and Joe Jarboe; and great-granddaughters Adryon Knoll and Shelby Novack. A rosary will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City, Kansas. Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. also at St. Dominic Catholic Church with Rev. Warren Stecklein as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Marilyn J. Rieke, 86, of Belleville, passed away May 13, 2023.

Marilyn (Baumfalk) Rieke went home May 13th, 2023, at the age of 86.&nbsp; She was born in Beatrice, Nebraska, on February 20, 1937. She enjoyed growing up with her five cherished siblings and her parents Mary (Vliet) and Albert Baumfalk and loved to share memories of those fun times with her loving family.

She married Duane Rieke on December 22, 1957, and they built a strong family who moved about between different towns in Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Kansas.&nbsp; 

She loved helping people and was a teacher in rural Gage County, NE.&nbsp; After being a stay-at-home-mom, she became an LPN and was a nurse in Hoxie, Belleville, and Manhattan, KS and Beatrice, NE.

A gifted quilter and friend to all, she loved seeing the flowers bloom in the springtime.&nbsp; Both she and Duane were avid readers and Marilyn shared the love of reading to her grandchildren, taking them to the library for the young children’s reading time.&nbsp; 

Marilyn was a woman of deep faith and was very active in her church (American Lutheran Church). She also was active in the greater community.&nbsp; She volunteered at church and was an active volunteer at the Belleville Library. She volunteered on the Rec Bus talking children to the library. Marylin was awarded Volunteer of the Year for the Belleville Library.

She loved to watch the Wildcats and Royals. She was also a doting and proud grandma.&nbsp; Her favorite job was enjoying watching her grandkids participate in various sporting, artistic, and academic endeavors.&nbsp;

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband Duane, parents Mary and Albert Baumfalk, sister Joyce Gross, brother-in-law Ed Gross and brother-in-law Joe Colombo. 

She leaves behind four children, Lora Rieke of Belleville, Ann (Chad) Leabo of Kansas City, MO, Dan (Kate) Rieke of Lenexa, KS, and Daryl (Kay) Rieke of Belleville. She also leaves behind six beloved grandchildren, Grace, Daniel, Sarah, Sophia, Jack, and Olivia, as well as treasured siblings, Janet Colombo of Bozeman, MT, Mike (Marsha) Baumfalk of Beatrice, Pat (Deb) Baumfalk of Lincoln, Liz (Bruce) Daubendiek of Pickrell, NE and many beloved nieces and nephews across the nation.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 30th, 2023, from noon to 7 p.m. at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home, Belleville, KS.&nbsp; The family will receive well-wishers from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 31st, at American Lutheran Church in Belleville, with internment at the Chester Cemetery in Chester, NE.&nbsp; Lunch will be at the church following the internment.

On Saturday, May 13, 2023, Alice Marie (McAleer) Gerstner, loving mother of six children and grandmother to 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, passed away peacefully at the age of 88.

Marie was a beloved and nurturing mother to her children, whom she raised to love and respect God, family and friends. She supported and promoted her children’s Catholic education, and all levels of schooling, to help ensure each of her children was successful in pursuing their dreams. She traveled endless miles to attend her children’s sporting events, debate contests and music exhibitions, no matter how far away. She taught them to aspire for their very best and encouraged her children to reach for their loftiest ambitions.Following in the footsteps of her own mother Alice, who was a nurse at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, Marie had a passion to help the sick and elderly throughout her life. While raising her family, Marie also practiced a career in nursing which spanned 50 years. She cared for the critically ill at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Hays, Kansas, and later cared for children as a pediatric nurse at The Post Rock Pediatric Medical Center in Hays, Kansas until her retirement in 1993. Even after retirement, Marie continued her vocation as a nurse for the elderly in Las Vegas, Nevada, until 2001.In 2004, Marie and LeRoy relocated to Surprise, Arizona, in retirement. She loved to adorn their home with her teapots collected from around the world, a library of books, family photos and personal treasures. Even more, Marie loved her four-legged friends, especially her little dachshunds, who were constant companions. From spring through autumn, Marie cherished time outdoors and tended to her garden brimming with flowers, hummingbirds and quail. She took breaks indoors to follow her favorite baseball teams, the Kansas City Royals and Arizona Diamondbacks. Once the holidays arrived, Marie would likely be found in the kitchen. She was a masterful baker, renown for her German bierocks and Christmas cookies, and she was proud to have shared time teaching her grandchildren her recipes. To the delight of family and friends, she baked thousands of Christmas cookies every year to send to eager recipients across the country.Marie was a lifelong member of the Catholic church. After devotedly caring for the love of her life, LeRoy, until his passing in 2007, Marie brought her beautiful voice to the church choir at the local parish at Our Lady of Lourdes/Prince of Peace in Sun City West. There she made so many treasured friends through music and the church community. Even as she struggled more in recent times, Marie woke up every day singing a song to greet her beloved team of caregivers. She brought happiness to her every day, even her last.Marie was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, LeRoy Gerstner; her parents Stephen and Alice; brothers Kenneth and LaVerne; her father-in-law and mother-in-law Joseph and Sophie Gerstner. She is survived by her six children, Dr. Barbara Smith (and husband Burton), Mark (and wife Lisa), Joseph (and wife Cecelia), Stephen, Mary Fitzhugh (and husband Alan) and Michael (and spouse Mitch). She is also survived by 14&nbsp;grandchildren and two great grandchildren; her sisters-in-law Lilian Rohr and Ima McAleer; and her brother-in-law James Gerstner.Rest in peace, Marie. You are forever loved by all whose lives you touched in your own special way.Visitation will be on Thursday, May 18, 2023 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m., with Prayer Service at 4:00 p.m., at Camino del Sol Funeral Chapel, 13738 W. Camino del Sol, Sun City West, AZ 85375. Funeral Mass will take place on Friday May 19, 2023 at 10:00 a.m .at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church at 9728 W. Palmeras Drive, Sun City, AZ 85373. A luncheon with Marie’s family will follow at the church. Internment is scheduled for Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at 12:30 p.m. at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in North Phoenix.
