Christine Ellison, 72, of Hoxie, KS, died Tuesday, August 1, 2023. She was born July 30, 1951, in Belvidere, IL, to Harley and Ramona (Siefeldt) Hall. 

She graduated from Belvidere High School in 1969 and then attended Western Illinois University where she received her bachelor’s degree. Christine then obtained her master’s degree from Rockford University. She worked at Sun Strand Industries in Rockford, IL until moving to Western Kansas and taking a job at Colby Community College. She is survived by her husband Ronald and sister Marlene (Fred) Brereton. No services are scheduled.

Mary Ann Keith was born Aug. 20, 1951, in WaKeeney to Joseph and Mary (Stramel) Richmeier. She grew up on the family farm near St. Peter with seven brothers and one sister.

She attended grade school in St. Peter and graduated from Morland High School in 1969. After graduation, Mary Ann attended cosmetology school at Goodland Vo-tech in Goodland. After obtaining her cosmetology license, she returned to Penokee, Kan., and worked in a beauty shop. It was here that she also met the love of her life, Glenn Keith.

Glenn and Mary Ann were married Sept. 2, 1972, at Saint Anthony Catholic Church in St. Peter, Kan. This union brought five children: Jennifer, Jodi, Megan, Ryan and Adam.

Mary Ann was a stay-at-home mom and while doing so, she decided to take cake decorating classes in the evening. These classes led her to become known as “the cake lady." Over the years, she made countless numbers of wedding, birthday and graduation cakes. The grandkids always enjoyed picking out their birthday cake each year and no matter the cake, Grandma Mary Ann always exceeded their wishes!

In the summer, Mary Ann managed the Hill City swimming pool for years. She also began working part-time at the Hill City Grade School doing recess lunch duty, which then led to a full-time position. She worked as a para in the special education classroom and later moved to a library position at Longfellow Middle School. When Longfellow closed, she returned to the Hill City Grade School library as the librarian, a position that she still held. Mary Ann was a very hard worker and was constantly keeping busy, always doing whatever it took to help support the family. She started a cleaning business years ago, which included cleaning four plus businesses in Hill City each week.

Mary Ann was meticulous about keeping her home, her flowers and her yard in tip-top shape. She loved hosting family gatherings and seemed to make it all look so easy. When Glenn began having health problems, Mary Ann never complained and was a devoted caretaker. Her children and grandchildren are extremely thankful for her work ethic she impressed upon them. Mary Ann believed that if you have a job, you do what you have to do and don’t complain. She lived by this each and every day.

Mary Ann died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023, at the Graham County Hospital, surrounded by her family who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Glenn; her infant son, Ryan; and three brothers: Jim, Roy, and Maynard.

Left to carry on her legacy of love are her children: Jennifer Williams and husband Terry of Hill City; Jodi Rohr and husband Justin of Gypsum; Megan Hart and husband Nathan of Bogue; and Adam Keith and wife Jennifer of Larned; 13 grandchildren; Madison and Abby Wiliams; Brooke, Adyson, and Caleb Rohr; Ella, Eva, Ethan, and Ean Hart; and Calvin, Mylee, Maggie, and Kyzer Keith. Stuttgart resident, Verna Carolina Preuss Huiting, passed away peacefully in her home on August 7, 2023, at the age of 95.

Verna was born on February 1, 1945, in Phillips County, Kansas to her parents, Carl August Bohl and Martha Emilie (Klotz) Bohl.

She is preceded in death by her first husband Michael Preuss, parents Carl and Martha Bohl, brother Ervin Bohl and wife Gertrude, sister Dorothy Seipp and husband George, and stepson James Huiting.

Verna is survived by her husband Duane Huiting of Osborne, Kansas, sons Darrell Preuss and wife Sandra of Norton, Kansas, and Eldon Preuss and wife Sandi of Stuttgart, Kansas, daughter Velma Jansonius and husband David of Prairie View, Kansas, stepsons Stan Huiting and wife Christine of Downs, Kansas, and Brian Huiting and wife Mindy of Downs, Kansas, stepdaughters Tava Collins of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Nancy Wilfarht and husband Dave of Downs, Kansas, brother Raymond Bohl and wife Gerline of Phillipsburg, Kansas, sister Iona Sidman and husband Warren of Stuttgart, Kansas, as well as nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service conducted by Pastor Lee Bennight will be held at the Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stuttgart, Kansas on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in the Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery.

Verna will lie in state on Thursday 2 p.m. – 9 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a visitation from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday evening, at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg, Kansas.

Patti loved music, and enjoyed traveling, and anything outdoors, especially gardening. She is survived by her husband Roy of the home, two sons Derek and Amy Browning of Watertown, South Dakota, and Josh and Taney Browning of Scott City, Kansas, one daughter Sumer and Anthony Nichols of Plains, Kansas, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one grandson. There will be no formal services held at this time.

Marcella 'Marcy' Garcia, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2023, at home surrounded by her family. “Marcy” as she was fondly known to family and friends was born November 23, 1944, in Garden City, Kansas, to Dionicio and Irene Garcia. She graduated from Garden City High School in 1962, and in 1966 she received an RN from the Dominican School of Nursing in Great Bend, Kansas. In 1987, Marcy completed the Midwifery Internship Program from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Over her career, she delivered 1,563 babies in the United States and as a missionary in Mexico.

Marcy was a community member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame from 1975 to 1990. She held numerous jobs in Women’s Health Clinics, Labor and Delivery, Prenatal and after care for her patients. She was a member of several professional affiliations and appeared in numerous research and Women’s Health publications. In 2001, Marcy made the list of top 100 nurses in Dallas, Texas. Marcy retired from nursing in 2009 and moved to Las Cruces.

She became a member of Cathedral of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, where she volunteered in pastoral services for ten years. One of her most cherished church activities was being a member of Los Pasqualitos group. 

Marcy loved life and her family deeply. Her laughter and smiles were infectious. She loved music and dancing. Her hobbies were reading, cross-stitch, crossword puzzles, Mahjongg, Spider, and Mexican Train dominoes. She was known as the life of the party! Marcy is survived by her sisters Virginia Jaramillo and Christina Padilla, both of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, Geri Duran (Richard), Maria Elena Jojola (Antonio), and Zante Garcia (Debby), all of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Sylvia Garcia of Carrollton, Texas; her brothers Dennis Garcia (Celeste) of Chula Vista, California, Philip Garcia (Marlene) of Sacramento, California, and Charles Garcia (Vonnie) of Albuquerque, New Mexico; 26 nieces and nephews; 24 great-nieces and great-nephews; and a plethora of extended family and friends.

Marcy is preceded in death by her parents Dionicio and Irene Garcia, and a great-nephew Wyatt James Wilder. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 11, 2023, at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City, Kansas. There will be no calling hours.

Marcella 'Marcy' Garcia

Milton Lewis Jamison, 72, of WaKeeney, Kansas, passed away on August 3, 2023. Milton was born in Quinter, Kansas, on April 5th, 1951, the son of Reuben Jamison and Retta Mae (Starkey) Woodward.

Milton attended Quinter High School and went on to graduate from Beloit Vocational College with studies in agriculture and animal husbandry. 

After college, Milton joined the Brethren Volunteer Service and worked in New Windsor, Maryland, for two years, where he found his love of carpentry. Milton worked for 27 years with the Kansas Department of Transportation in WaKeeney, Kansas, and Formation Plastics in Quinter, Kansas. Milton moved out to his farm in WaKeeney, KS, in 1979 and farmed for more than 20 years. 

Milton is best remembered for his many exceptional talents. He loved to garden and made pickles out of just about anything he grew. He made home-cranked ice cream, adapting the recipe for the family favorite, graham cracker ice cream, and many other flavors. He was a gifted baker, creating many memorable birthday cakes for his family as well as elaborate anniversary and wedding cakes. He was always very gracious in sharing his talents and put his love into everything he created.

He was an exceptional carpenter with abilities that often didn’t seem like they should be possible. His skills were well known in the area, and he often took on both large and small jobs in the area where his craftsmanship can be seen such as kitchen and office remodels. Most recent and notable are the custom bar and tables he built for The Prairie Rose Inn, some of which were made by recycling the old doors and door jambs of the former Trego Manor. While at Formation Plastics, he created some useful inventions like plastic sleds, drip catchers, and games, and created thousands of intricate mold templates and jigs.

Milton and Jeri started their Cottonwood Creations business in 2016, where they made home decor items out of the cottonwood trees found on the family farm. His craftsmanship and imagination can be seen in the hundreds of candle holders, signs, lamps, coasters, tables, and adorable wooden animal figures that he made alongside Jeri. Their work can be found on display in the homes of hundreds of happy customers.

His home and family were his first love, though. He was happy and fun-loving, bringing much joy and love to his family and everyone he touched, making their lives brighter for having been around him. Despite his many projects, he was never too busy to stop and help whenever he saw a need.

Milton was united in marriage to Carlene (Butcher) Jamison on June 3, 1972, and they were married for 21 years until her passing. God blessed them with seven children, six sons, and a daughter. On June 5th, 2004, Milton was married to Jeri (Loflin) Jamison, and together they blended their families into one.

Milton is survived by his wife Jeri, his mother Retta Mae Woodward, Quinter, nine children, Jason Jamison, Abilene; Troy (Tracey) Jamison, Overland Park; Aaron (Amy Jo) Jamison, Louisburg; Scott (Michelle) Jamison; Bryan (Margie) Jamison, Olathe; Kassy (Zabu) Nyirenda, Overland Park; Daniel (Amber) Irwin, Hays; Jami "Krista" (Michael) Ryce, Kansas City; Chad Jamison, Dublin and fifteen grandchildren, Caleb Jamison, Rylee Jamison, Ryan Jamison, Trenton Jamison, Austin Jamison, Andrew Jamison, Aspenn Jamison, Ryley Gautney, Christian Sigle, Kylan Huntley, Liam Jamison, Brecklyn Nyirenda, Bryce Irwin, Briley Irwin, Kaylee Ryce, sisters Verla (Asa) McFadden, Marsha Jamison, and brother Wesley (Eby) Jamison.

Milton was preceded in death by his wife Carlene Jamison, his father, Reuben Jamison, and his stepfather, Earl Woodward.

Milton was born in Quinter, Kansas, on April 5th, 1951, the son of Reuben Jamison and Retta Mae (Starkey) Woodward.Milton attended Quinter High School and went on to graduate from Beloit Vocational College with studies in agriculture and animal husbandry. After college, Milton joined the Brethren Volunteer Service and worked in New Windsor, Maryland, for two years, where he found his love of carpentry. Milton worked for 27 years with the Kansas Department of Transportation in WaKeeney, Kansas, and Formation Plastics in Quinter, Kansas. Milton moved out to his farm in WaKeeney, KS, in 1979 and farmed for more than 20 years. Milton is best remembered for his many exceptional talents. He loved to garden and made pickles out of just about anything he grew. He made home-cranked ice cream, adapting the recipe for the family favorite, graham cracker ice cream, and many other flavors. He was a gifted baker, creating many memorable birthday cakes for his family as well as elaborate anniversary and wedding cakes. He was always very gracious in sharing his talents and put his love into everything he created.He was an exceptional carpenter with abilities that often didn’t seem like they should be possible. His skills were well known in the area, and he often took on both large and small jobs in the area where his craftsmanship can be seen such as kitchen and office remodels. Most recent and notable are the custom bar and tables he built for The Prairie Rose Inn, some of which were made by recycling the old doors and door jambs of the former Trego Manor. While at Formation Plastics, he created some useful inventions like plastic sleds, drip catchers, and games, and created thousands of intricate mold templates and jigs.Milton and Jeri started their Cottonwood Creations business in 2016, where they made home decor items out of the cottonwood trees found on the family farm. His craftsmanship and imagination can be seen in the hundreds of candle holders, signs, lamps, coasters, tables, and adorable wooden animal figures that he made alongside Jeri. Their work can be found on display in the homes of hundreds of happy customers.His home and family were his first love, though. He was happy and fun-loving, bringing much joy and love to his family and everyone he touched, making their lives brighter for having been around him. Despite his many projects, he was never too busy to stop and help whenever he saw a need.Milton was united in marriage to Carlene (Butcher) Jamison on June 3, 1972, and they were married for 21 years until her passing. God blessed them with seven children, six sons, and a daughter. Lois's life was marked by her commitment to care and service. She married Albert Nash and shared a fulfilling life with him until his passing in 2009. Her professional journey as a registered nurse took her to various places, including a medical clinic in Seattle and Wesley Hospital in Wichita. She dedicated her skills to helping those in need and making a positive impact on their lives. Beyond her professional achievements, Lois was an active and enthusiastic participant in her community. She found joy in contributing her time and efforts to the Hays Medical Center Volunteer Services, where her compassionate nature shone brightly. James Lee “Jim” Soderlund, 66, passed away on Aug. 4, 2023 in Oberlin, KS. He was born on Oct. 8, 1956 to Alfred LeRoy and Elaine Marie (Rippe) Soderlund in Oberlin, KS.

Jim graduated from Beaver City High School in 1975. 

After high school he moved back to Oberlin and started working. He did construction, lineman work for the city of Oberlin, sanitation engineer, and maintenance. 

Jim married Penny Fisher on Sept. 4, 1982 in Oberlin, KS.&nbsp; After retiring in 2018, he enjoyed feeding the neighborhood cats.

Jim loved to hunt, fish, and was assistant chief of the Oberlin Fire Department for many years. He also enjoyed watching western TV shows such as Gunsmoke and Bonanza. But most of all he loved to spend time with his kids and grandkids.

Jim is survived by daughters Jessica Soderlund of Beloit, KS, Jamie (Jordan) Macfee of Beloit, KS, and Jean Soderlund of Emporia, KS; brothers Kenny Soderlund of Beaver City, NE, Gene Soderlund of Horton, KS, Rick Soderlund of Abilene, KS, and Tracy Soderlund of Danbury, NE; sister Lori Dreiling of Hays, KS; grandchildren Taedan Macfee, Brynlee Macfee, Bailey Macfee. 

He was preceded by his parents, wife Penny Soderlund, and infant brother Trevor Soderlund.

Gary Lee McDonald, 82, passed away August 2, 2023, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kan. He was born May 9, 1941, to Maurice and Hazel (Herter) McDonald, in Great Bend. 

He married Judy Klapp March 7, 1973, in Ellinwood. She died June 19, 2019.&nbsp;

A lifetime area resident, Gary was the electrical production foreman for the city of Ellinwood for 29 years until his retirement in 2005. 

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Ellinwood and a former member of United Church of Christ in Ellinwood. Gary enjoyed playing the guitar, watching westerns and cooking shows, always trying out the skills and dishes he learned. He loved to collect trains, and also enjoyed NRHA and NASCAR.&nbsp;

Survivors include two daughters, Teresa Ensminger Grubb and husband James of Ellinwood, and Christina Rowell and husband Jim of Great Bend; and three grandchildren, Gary Grubb, Judy Grubb and Emily Rowell. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Judy; and an infant sister, Marie McDonald.&nbsp;

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial graveside service will be held at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, August 10, 2023, at Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery, Ellinwood, Kan., with Pastor Ken Gray presiding.

William "Willie" Diehl, 83, of Hays, lost his courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, August 3, 2023. He was born January 3, 1940, in Hays, to William F. and Bridget (Jacobs) Diehl. 

He attended St. Joseph's Military Academy.

William had many jobs, including Service Acid in which he retired early due to a disabling accident. 

His greatest job was being a loving father and grandfather. He made many memories for his daughters over the years from picking them up at school and helping with homework to late night phone calls letting them know he always supported them no matter what. In recent years he made many memories with his grandchildren playing games or going on walks and collecting rocks with them.

William was great at drawing and would draw pictures, doodle, and work on crossword or sudoku puzzles in his free time. He loved watching court shows and old western movies. He liked making jokes and making people laugh. He was great at giving advice and would always listen. He had a great outlook on everything and often said, “it could be worse.” He was a brave and strong fighter and liked to know everything going on. He was stuck in his stubbornness until his passing.

He is survived by his three daughters, Kelli (Diehl) and James Yunker, Hays, Ashley (Diehl) Mehl, Hays, Michelle (Diehl) Gonzales and family, Lawrence; two sons, Johnathan and Davina “Pepper” Diehl and family, and Christopher Diehl, both of Topeka; one brother, Kenneth and Carol Diehl, Roseville, CA, three sisters, Virginia Ekey, Wichita, Janice Krannawitter and husband Don, Hays, Karen Swain, Lawrence; five grandchildren, Jace and Jami Yunker, Hays, Caylor Diehl, Traetyn Mehl, and Braylin Mehl, Hays, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son William “Bill” Diehl, two brothers, Jacob Diehl and Michael Diehl, four sisters, Judy Pohlenz, Kristina Schmidt, Kathleen Diehl, and Lillian VanLoenen.

Delores Marie Zimmerman, 90, of Hastings, NE passed away on August 3, 2023. &nbsp;Delores was born on April 16,1933, in Gove County, Kansas, to Pius and Anna (Lovenstein) Waldman.

Delores graduated from Park High School in Park, KS in 1951. &nbsp;She played on the softball team, was class vice-president and was crowned May Queen.

Dee married Edmund “Ed” Zimmerman on April 10, 1956, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Park, KS. &nbsp;To this union, four children were born.

Dee was a hard worker, caring for family and working outside of the home. &nbsp;She worked retail at May D&amp;F in Colorado. &nbsp;In Hastings, she was the office manager for Industrial Chemical Laboratories, employed at Marshalltown and at the Adam’s County Sheriff’s Department. &nbsp;She also worked at primary and general elections for several years.

Dee valued her family and friends. She made traveling to visit family a priority. &nbsp;She enjoyed vacations, playing cards, shopping and was a champion league bowler. &nbsp; She was a parishioner of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and served on the Altar Society for over 50 years. She was always willing to provide food or work an event.

Delores is survived by her husband; children Lynette (Mark) Moul and Sheila Valentine, Hastings; Cary (Kathy) Zimmerman, Casper, WY; LeAnn Zimmerman, O’Neill, NE; grandsons Nicholas (Shelly) Zimmerman, Matthew Valentine, Brandon (Abbey) Zimmerman, Cody (Laura) Valentine, Zacary Zimmerman; great-grandchildren Vincent and Declan Valentine; Connor, Luke, Evan, Caleb, Sadie and Sophie Zimmerman; siblings Pius Waldman, Irene Bechard, Delbert (Ethel) Waldman, Linus (Antonia) Waldman; sisters-in-law Johanna Dreher, Sally Burgardt, Albina Moore, Loretta (Bob) Waldman, Renie (Clyde) Thomas;&nbsp; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Arnold L. “Arnie” Ochs, 93, Otis, Kansas, passed away Thursday, August 3, 2023, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

Arnold was born April 19, 1930, in rural Otis, Kansas, the son of Jacob H. and Elizabeth (Kaiser) Ochs. He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. 

A 1948 graduate of Otis Rural High School, Otis, Kansas, he was a shop foreman/mechanic for Ochs Inc., Otis, Kansas, before his retirement.

He was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, Kansas, a former member of the Trinity Lutheran Church Council, Otis, Kansas, and a VFW member.

He was a United States Army veteran, serving during the Korean War as a mechanic in the motor pool.

Arnold was a “car guy” his whole life, always working on, and selling and buying cars. He bowled in a bowling league for many years.

Survivors include many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Clarence E. Ochs, Arthur C. Ochs, and Wilmer T. Ochs; and two sisters, Esther Dumler, and Hilda F. Deines.

Visitation will be Monday, August 7, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m.&nbsp; to 7:00 p.m.

Church visitation will be Tuesday, August 8, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:50 a.m.. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, Kansas.

Betty Jean Stark, 87, Hays, Kansas died Friday, August 4, 2023 at HaysMed surrounded by family.

She was born November 17, 1935 in Lexington, Nebraska, the daughter of William and Pauline Wells. 

In 1952, she graduated from Gothenburg High School. 

On June 26, 1954 she was united in marriage to Gerald Loy “Jerry” Stark in Gothenburg, a union that would span 69 years. 

Betty was a loving homemaker, taught country school in Nebraska, worked for the local school district calling substitute teachers while living in Columbia, Missouri, and after Jerry and Betty moved to Hays in 1991, was a home health aide. 

Betty was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church and enjoyed attending various Fort Hays State University games with Jerry. She loved her family, and had endless energy for her grandchildren, often treating them to chocolate ice cream for breakfast.

Survivors include her husband Jerry of the home, two sons, David Stark of Wichita and Matthew Stark and wife Alicia of Issaquah, WA, two daughters, Debbie Stark of Hallsville, MO and Becky Stark-Perry of Colorado Springs, CO, a brother, Bill Wells of Mesquite, NV, eight grandchildren, Steve and Sarah Edwards, Logan Stark, Cherokee, Ashton, and Eddy Stark-Perry, Cody and Maya Stark, and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at Messiah Lutheran Church with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating. Inurnment in Mt. Allen Cemetery will be at a later date. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the church.

Lillian VanLoenen, age 84, of Hays, Kansas passed away Thursday, August 3, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society Care Center in Hays.

She was born December 15, 1938, in Hays to William F. and Bridget Anne (Jacobs) Diehl. 

She married Douglas O. “Doug” VanLoenen on November 21, 1971, in Hays. He preceded her in death on May 29, 2012.

She was a homemaker, and worked at Fort Hays State College in the Psychological Service Center for a few years before her marriage. She grew up in Hays, and was a 1956 graduate of Girls Catholic High. She served two years in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), and was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. 

Lillian and Doug lived in Arvada, Colorado and McPherson before moving back to Hays in 1986.

Lillian is survived by her children, Melissa Seltmann and husband, Ryan, Hays, KS; her granddaughter, Mallory Grace Seltmann; Matthew VanLoenen, Hays, KS; Andrew VanLoenen and Jason VanLoenen, both of Kansas City, KS; her siblings, Virginia Ekey, Wichita, KS; Janice Krannawitter and husband, Don, Hays, KS; Ken Diehl and wife, Carol, Roseville, CA; Karen Swain, Lawrence, KS.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, William F. and Bridget Anne Diehl; her husband, Douglas O. “Doug” VanLoenen; her brothers, William “Willie” Diehl; and Michael Diehl; her sisters, Judy Pohlenz; Kristina Schmidt; and an infant brother and sister, Jacob Diehl and Kathleen Diehl.

Nathalie Ellene Mussemann of Hays, KS, formerly of WaKeeney, KS, passed away on August 3, 2023, at Hays Medical Center, at the age of 93. She was born on September 30, 1929, in WaKeeney to Clarence and Marie (Huber) Zeman. 

She married Frank Mussemann on November 23, 1948, in WaKeeney. They were blessed with four children, Dennis, Christine, Sharla, and Julie.

Nathalie grew up in WaKeeney and graduated from WaKeeney High School in 1947. 

She was the epitome of a farm wife and all it entails. After raising their children, she worked at the Dairy Queen and Bethlehem Lutheran Church as the secretary. Following her retirement, Nathalie spent many hours enjoying the game of golf. 

She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Bethlehem Daughters, Big Creek Ladies Golf, and F.O.E. Auxiliary, all of WaKeeney. She loved playing cards, especially bridge and pinochle, and spending time with her family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. Birthday celebrations always included Gram's homemade ice cream and chocolate sheet cake.

Nathalie is survived by her husband, Frank of the home in Hays; children Dennis (Lori) Mussemann of Wamego, KS, Christine (Gregory) Trogstad of WaKeeney, Sharla (David) Albers of Brownell, KS, and Julie Mussemann of Kapolei, HI; five grandchildren, Taylor (Melinda) Trogstad of Salina, KS, Bethany Trogstad of Prairie Village, KS, Seth (Jami) Albers of Collyer, KS, Silas (Megan) Albers of Ransom, KS, and Hannah (Josh) Enslow of Hays, KS; ten great-grandchildren, Crew Trogstad, Nelson Murdock, Maura, Thaddeous and Lennox Albers, Zaddok and Everly Albers, Bryson, Hattie, and Joelle Enslow.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Zeman and Marie Hands; infant son Charles Lee; son-in-law Don Holden; infant great-grandson Maddox Albers; brother Dwayne Zeman; and sister Nadine Powell.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at 10:30 a.m., at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in WaKeeney. Burial will follow in the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in WaKeeney. Visitation will be on Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. until service time.

She was born on September 30, 1929, in WaKeeney to Clarence and Marie (Huber) Zeman. She married Frank Mussemann on November 23, 1948, in WaKeeney. They were blessed with four children, Dennis, Christine, Sharla, and Julie.Nathalie grew up in WaKeeney and graduated from WaKeeney High School in 1947. She was the epitome of a farm wife and all it entails. After raising their children, she worked at the Dairy Queen and Bethlehem Lutheran Church as the secretary. Following her retirement, Nathalie spent many hours enjoying the game of golf. She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Bethlehem Daughters, Big Creek Ladies Golf, and F.O.E. Auxiliary, all of WaKeeney. She loved playing cards, especially bridge and pinochle, and spending time with her family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. James Douglas “Smitty” Smith passed away on August 2, 2023, at Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney, KS, at the age of 68. He leaves behind countless friends, a loving family, and too many laughter-filled stories to count.

Smitty came bursting into the world on July 15, 1955, to Jack and Katie (Henning) Smith in Hutchinson, KS.

Smitty spent most of his years causing trouble and creating fun in WaKeeney, and graduated from WaKeeney High School in 1973. He spent many years working in maintenance for the hospital and then the Best Western Hotel, using his skills to fix things while sharing his humor along the way.

Smitty loved to play golf and pickleball, and some of his favorite moments were spent hunting pheasants in the wide-open plains with his beloved dogs. But his true love was his life partner Barb Farber; she stole his heart from the moment they met and never let go.

Smitty truly embraced life, living large and making the most of every moment. He loved laughing, and making others laugh. When God said, “Love thy neighbor,” Smitty said, “Will do!” and took it to heart. There’s not a single thing he wouldn’t do for his friends, and as many people have said, “The world could use more Smitties.”

Smitty is survived by his sister-in-law, Karen Smith of Centennial, CO; and nieces Stacy Smith of Evergreen, CO and Amy (Tom) Kelly and their children Bria and Caitlyn of Aurora, CO.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Katie Smith; partner, Barbara Farber; brother, Steven Smith; and young sisters, Carol Lynn Smith and Katherine Sue Smith. He also had many dogs that we know he was happy to be reunited with in heaven.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2023, 12:00-3:00 p.m. at the Western Kansas Saloon in WaKeeney. Smitty would not want us to mourn, so we want to celebrate a life well lived; and encourage you to wear KC Chiefs attire and be prepared to share stories. A graveside service will be held Saturday evening at 5 p.m. at the WaKeeney City Cemetery.

Daniel David DeWitt, 59, passed away August 3, 2023, at his home in Hoisington, Kansas. He was born on July 20, 1964, in Hays, Kansas, to Donald and Marth (Triebel) DeWitt.&nbsp;

Dan grew up in and graduated from Concordia, Kansas, later moving to Coffeyville, Kansas, then to Hoisington, Kansas, where he lived for several years. Dan enjoyed participating in Special Olympics in Concordia and Great Bend.

He also enjoyed spending time with his big family at the many family reunions. Dan liked fishing, playing cards, and horseshoes.

Dan is survived by three brothers, Ed (Judy) DeWitt of Hesston, Kansas, Vern DeWitt of Coffeyville, Kansas, and Gene DeWitt of Pensacola, Florida; three sisters, Deb (Jerry) Davis of Hoisington, Kansas, Ruby (Randy) Barnes of Independence, Kansas, and Susan Sisco of Nowata, Oklahoma; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Cremation has taken place with Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.

She graduated from the Phillipsburg High School in Phillipsburg, KS.

She was united in marriage to Larry Gwennup in 1975. &nbsp;The couple later divorced.

Cindy was preceded in death by her father, Ronald.
