Mary Edith Anderson, 101, died Monday, August 7, 2023, at High Plains Retirement Village Assisted Living in Lakin, Kansas. She was born September 3, 1921, in Holcomb, Kansas, the daughter of William Robert and Ethel Mary (Norton) Smith. Mary grew up in Holcomb, Kansas where she attended Holcomb schools.

She lived most of her life in Garden City. Mary lived in Garden City, Webb City, Oklahoma, Kit Carson, Colorado, Deerfield, Kansas, Shidler, Oklahoma, Cedarvale, Kansas, and Blackwell, Oklahoma, before moving to Lakin, Kansas in 2018. 

On January 27, 1938, she married Herman Edward Anderson. 

Mary worked for many years at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City as a cook until her retirement. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, collecting gnomes, and her flowers especially sunflowers. Survivors include three sons, Tommy Ray Anderson of Tornado, West Virginia, George Bret Anderson of Great Bend, Kansas, and Gordon Eugene Anderson of Cimarron, Kansas; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Herman who died on January 26, 1974. She is also preceded in death by her parents; eight sons William Edward Anderson, Jimmy Clifford Anderson, Ronald Dean Anderson, Ivan David Anderson, Kenneth Leon Anderson, Richard Warren Anderson, Jerry Lee Anderson, and Bobby Joe Anderson; a daughter, Susan Marie Graves; three brothers William Lee Smith, Theodore Harmon Smith, and Elmer Ray Smith; a sister, Faye Williamson Dale; several grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at the First Presbyterian Church in Lakin, Kansas with Rev. Rita Stockton officiating. Services may also be viewed on Facebook Live on the Garnand Funeral Home Facebook Page. Burial will follow at the Deerfield Cemetery in Deerfield, Kansas. There will be no calling hours.

Antonio Salvatore Mesa, of Blue Springs, Missouri passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2023 with his wife Vicky and son John by his side. Tony was born and raised in Garden City, Kansas to John and Mary Mesa.

 After graduating from Boys Town, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served in Vietnam (1967-1968) and Germany (1968-1969) as a member of the United States Army Corps of Topographical Engineers.

Upon returning home, he attended Garden City Community College where he obtained an associate’s degree in 1971. He continued his studies at Kansas State University where he obtained a bachelor of science in sociology in 1973. He went on to receive a master of social work from the University of Kansas in 1975. 

He would work as a social worker for the next eighteen years at the Kansas State Department of Social Rehabilitative Services (1975-2003) before moving on to the State Department of Aging (2003-2011) where he worked as a quality assurance supervisor. He also spent twenty six years (1994-2018) as a home care provider at the Center for Developmentally Disabled.

Tony was the Ccommander of the American GI Forum, Kansas City Area Chapter and local board member for the United States Selective Service System, Region 3. He was a board member of El Centro Inc., (1985-1987) and enjoyed coaching his son’s soccer teams at the YMCA. 

Tony was a dedicated Catholic and member of St. Robert Bellarmine in Blue Springs, Missouri. Tony loved helping others and lived to serve. 

Whether someone needed a ride, a babysitter, an extra hand making home improvements, or a loan, Tony was ready to help. He was a passionate man who loved listening to music, antiquing and keeping up on politics.

Tony is preceded in death by his father John G. Mesa; siblings John C. Mesa; Mary Rose Morley and Pasquale Mesa. Survivors include his wife Vicky Mesa; children Lisa Bruno; Antonio Mario Mesa; Melisa Mesa; Antonio Salvatore Mesa; and John Mesa; mother Maria Plescia; sister Clara Martinez; brothers Joe and Carlo Alvarado; 16 grandchildren and many loving nieces, nephews, great grandchildren and friends.

Visitation will be 9:30 a.m., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, 4313 SW 7 HWY, Blue Springs, Missouri 64014.

Rosary service will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 17, 2023 at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City, Kansas with burial to follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home.

Ingalls- Dennis E. “Denny” Maxwell, 74, died on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at Halsey Hall, Kansas Soldiers Home in Fort Dodge. He was born on September 7, 1948 at Dodge City the son of Robert &amp; Dorothy (Rixon) Maxwell. 

He married Donna J. Fickler on May 27, 1972 at Garden City. Denny graduated from Ingalls High School in 1966 where he was on the basketball, football and track teams.

He spent one year at Garden City Community College before enlisting in the United States Army. He was stationed in Korea where he was a helicopter crew chief, mainly flying the General between the DMZ and the base. 

After his discharge he returned to the area and worked at Oswalt Manufacturing for a year before becoming a lifelong farmer on the family farm in Gray County. He retired in 2020. He was a member of St James Lutheran Church, Harry H. Renick American Legion Post #9 and John J. Haskell VFW Post # 2279. He enjoyed building, painting and riding in his Volkswagen dune buggies, NASCAR and Kansas State University Football. He is survived by his wife Donna J. Maxwell, son Aaron and Audrey Maxwell of Ingalls, sisters Connie Clendennen of Blair, Oklahoma and Pam Kitch of Great Bend, and grandchildren Shae Maxwell, Gavin Maxwell and Clayton Maxwell. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 21, 2023 at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with Rev Tim Hickey officiating. Military Hhonors will be provided by the United State Army 1st Infantry Division of Fort Riley, Kansas Honor Guard.

Floy Ann Lay was born on October 22, 1943, to Ninuel Blevins and Helen Lola (Newman) Lay in Fallbrook, Calif. On August 4, 2023, Floy went home to be with her Lord and Savior. Her faith in Christ is what helped her make it through life’s ups and downs. 

Floy Ann married Larry J. Holbrook in 1960, and they were blessed with three daughters: Laura, Diane, and Katy. In 1969, Floy Ann and Buster McKnight were blessed with a daughter whom she gave her mother’s middle name, Lola.

In 1972, Floy Ann married Joseph Dale Pettit. Their first home was in Beaumont, Calif. until they purchased property in Yucca Valley, Calif. They built their home themselves, one board at a time, and spent nearly 50 years there until her husband’s passing. Between them, they had nine children.

Floy Ann worked as a nurse aide in Yucca Valley. 

She also worked with her husband, painting and doing home repairs. Her hobbies included watercolor painting, sewing, and creating costumes for her husband to wear when he played guitar and sang at schools and libraries. Floy Ann also enjoyed cooking—she grilled the world’s best BBQ ribs! But her greatest joy came from just being our mom.

There was never a time you would leave her home hungry. If she knew of someone in need of anything—from a shoulder to cry on, to a good laugh—she was always there for them. Mom had a green thumb and could grow anything. She loved living in the high desert and enjoyed the plants and wildlife native to that area.

After her husband passed away, she moved to Stockton, Kansas to be close to the majority of her children who call the state home. Eventually she moved to Dawson Place in Hill City, Kansas.

Floy Ann is survived by her four daughters: Laura (Rick) Murray of La Crosse, Kansas; Kate (Darin) Terry of Woodston, Kansas; Diane Holbrook, also of Woodston; and Lola (William) Reese of Caldwell, Idaho. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Daniel Murray, Kim Blunt, Travis Reese, Chris (Jenny) Murray, Kelly (Dave) Stephen, Christina Hays, David (Tera) Murray, Dusty Terry, Markus McKnight, and Matthew (Chelsea) Terry. Her surviving loved ones also include 24 great-grandchildren, two brothers, one sister, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Just a few of the loved ones waiting for her on the other side include her husband, parents, one granddaughter, three nephews, one niece, one stepson, one stepdaughter, three brothers and three sisters.

Floy Ann will be laid to rest next to her husband on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at 10 a.m. at the Stockton City Cemetery.

Floy Ann Pettit

Noveline Mae (Zeller) Haremza, 79, of Colby, died Sunday, August 13, 2023. She was born to Alvin and C. Marie Zeller on April 29, 1945, in Scott City, Kansas. At the age of seven, 

Noveline became a polio survivor. On August 20, 1963, Noveline married, and later divorced, Lester Haremza. From this union were born two children, Velma and Ronald (Ron).

Noveline experienced life as a homemaker while her children were young. 

Once her children were older, she worked until 2005 in the retail industry. In 2005, she began working at the Prairie Museum of Art and History in Colby, Kansas. She enjoyed greeting the museum’s visitors and appreciated all the history comprised with this position. Noveline retired from the museum in April of this year. Noveline was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Ron Haremza; grandson, Teryn Haremza; brother, John; brothers-in-law, Lawerence Rall and David Healy; and a nephew, Matthew Healy. Noveline is survived by her daughter, Velma, and son-in-law, Travis; grandsons, Tayber Haremza and Tanner Goodheart; siblings, Jeannine Rall, Violet Healy, Larry (Nadene) Zeller, Sherry (Chris) Mead, and many nieces and nephews. A small family graveside service will be conducted at a later date. She was born to Alvin and C. Marie Zeller on April 29, 1945, in Scott City, Kansas. At the age of seven, Noveline became a polio survivor. On August 20, 1963, Noveline married, and later divorced, Lester Haremza. From this union were born two children, Velma and Ronald (Ron). Noveline experienced life as a homemaker while her children were young. Once her children were older, she worked until 2005 in the retail industry. In 2005, she began working at the Prairie Museum of Art and History in Colby, Kansas. She enjoyed greeting the museum’s visitors and appreciated all the history comprised with this position. Noveline retired from the museum in April of this year. Noveline was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Ron Haremza; grandson, Teryn Haremza; brother, John; brothers-in-law, Lawerence Rall and David Healy; and a nephew, Matthew Healy. Noveline is survived by her daughter, Velma, and son-in-law, Travis; grandsons, Tayber Haremza and Tanner Goodheart; siblings, Jeannine Rall, Violet Healy, Larry (Nadene) Zeller, Sherry (Chris) Mead, and many nieces and nephews. A small family graveside service will be conducted at a later date. Gerald E. “Jerry” Wiechman, age 94, passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on October 9, 1928, in Sedgwick County, Kansas, the son of John and Hilda Koch Wiechman.&nbsp; 

A resident of Scott County, Kansas since 1929, he moved with his family from Sedgwick County, Kansas, and grew up on the family farm for miles north of Scott City.&nbsp; He was a farmer and stockman.&nbsp;

Jerry, as he was best known, attended schools in Scott County, graduating with the class of 1946.&nbsp; 

Following graduation, Jerry became engaged in farming with his father.&nbsp; He became a very aggressive farmer, introducing many new practices both in farming and the cattle business, one of which was the introduction of high-moisture corn as cattle feed to Scott County and Kansas.

Jerry was active in his church serving numerous positions.&nbsp; He also served on the Lutheran Hospital Board, Scott County and Kansas Livestock Association, charter member of the Scott COOP, and served as a board member and president of Western Kansas Groundwater Management, Scott County Soil Conservation, Park Lane Nursing Home board, and alongside his wife Joyce, served as chairman of the All-School Reunion Committees in 1980, 1990 and 1995, and Aid Association for Lutherans Branch 3110.

Jerry was an adventurous sort.&nbsp; He sneaked a parental signature from his mother to play football in high school, knowing full well that his dad would say no.&nbsp; He never got over his love for football and got to relive it when his grandson, Erik was on the varsity team.

As a senior in high school, he was a member of the SCHS Flying Club where he achieved a solo license.&nbsp; 

His favorite hobby, however, was probably his work.&nbsp; He took great pride in growing beautiful crops and marketing good cattle.&nbsp; It was rumored that Jerry and his brother Donnie (with whom he partnered for many years) had the straightest rows in Scott County.&nbsp; In 1958 he was the winner of the 100 Bushel Milo Club, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, and was the “Outstanding Young Farmer” of Scott County in 1961.&nbsp; His farm became a frequent stop for governors and foreign dignitaries.&nbsp; He served as a mentor for many young men who worked for him as summer jobs.

When his sons grew up they became partners with their dad.&nbsp; The operation has continued to grow despite many tough setbacks.&nbsp; Some hail storms and falling cattle prices tried really hard to put him out of business, but Jerry was a very determined man and always came back fighting.&nbsp; He was very proud of his sons when he opted to turn operations over to them.&nbsp; After Gordon’s death, he again became very proud of his grandsons, Erik and Brian who became partners as well.

Jerry loved having fun too.&nbsp; His hobbies included fishing, hunting, dancing, square dancing, and in later years golfing and traveling especially in the motorhome, and being a super grandpa.&nbsp; Just when he and Joyce were starting to enjoy retirement, their son Gordon’s death made it necessary for him to spend more time at the farm, but Jay gave him a leave of absence to spend winters in Arizona.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Wiechman of Scott City, Kansas, sons Jay W. Wiechman of Kirwin, Kansas, Norman and Laura Wiechman of Scott City, Kansas, daughter-in-law Susan Wiechman of Scott City, Kansas, sister Velda Riddiough of Scott City, Kansas, 10 grandchildren, Erik and Leann Wiechman of Scott City, Kansas, Brian and Mikayla Wiechman of Scott City, Kansas, Jaycie Gluck of Savage Minnesota, Jeremy and Annagrey Wiechman of Little Elm, Texas, Kenny and Cyreesa Wiechman of Georgetown, Texas, Jessica and Luke Adkins of Salina, Kansas, Gabrel and Kristen Baca of Austin, Texas, Joseph and Megan Baca of Wichita, Kansas, Jerrad and Stephanie Lewis of Eudora, Kansas, Josh and Cynthia Lewis of Garden City, Kansas, and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Gordon Wiechman, three brothers, Marvin Wiechman, Martin Wiechman, Donald Wiechman, three sisters, Geneva Faurot, Luella Erskin, and LaVera King.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Scott City, Kansas with Rev. Matthew Koterba presiding.

Karen Kay Smith, 81, passed away August 10, 2023, at Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita, Kan. She was born on October 3, 1941, in Great Bend, Kan., to E.D. and Mary (Bagby) Wright. 

On February 10, 1975, she married J.W. Smith in Brookport, Ill. He passed away on September 3, 2007.

Karen grew up on the family farm near Seward. She showed quarter horses and was a talented athlete, playing basketball, tennis and fastpitch softball.

 She was a 1959 graduate of Great Bend High School then attended Kansas State University and McPherson College, where she was a member of the women's basketball team. After college, she moved to Chicago, where she worked for an accounting firm and was a professional dog handler traveling the U.S. and Canada. 

It was during this time she meant her husband, J.W., who trained and raced standardbred horses. They would continue to train and race through out the U.S. until they moved from Paducah, Ky., to Great Bend, Kan., in 1984.&nbsp;

Karen was a lifelong livestock producer and member of the American Boer Goat Association and American Rabbit Breeders Association. Karen was dedicated to her livestock plus supporting FFA and 4-H programs. She loved sports and was an avid K-State fan. 

Her true pride and joy were her daughter and grandchildren. She traveled many miles supporting them in all their activities, including stock shows, ballgames and swim meets. If you knew Karen, you knew of them, as she was sure to tell you of all their accomplishments.&nbsp;

Survivors include a daughter, Lisa McBride and husband, Ryan, of Hooker, Okla.; and two grandchildren, Dakotah McBride and wife, Hannah, of Belton, Mo., and Sayde McBride. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.W. Smith; and parents, E.D. and Mary Wright.

Visitation will take place 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2023, with the family receiving guests from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. Donald J. “Don” Waldschmidt, 80, Hays, died Thursday, August 10, 2023 at HaysMed and after over 70 years will once again be united with his father.

He was born December 2, 1942 in Hays, the son of Peter C. and Barbara “Barb” (Kisner) Waldschmidt. Don was the oldest of five children and known as “Pete’s Shadow.”

 In 1961, Don graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy and attended Fort Hays State University. 

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a former member of the Victoria St. Fidelis Third Degree Knights of Columbus. 

On October 26, 1963, he was united in marriage to Diane M. Roth at St. Joseph Catholic Church. 

Don was a cement truck driver for Hunter Construction and worked as a shift manager for Cross Manufacturing, Hays International Mailing Services/Alaniz and Sons, and Hadley Hospital/HaysMed. Don enjoyed hog farming in Munjor for 14 years before moving to Hays 1989, but always said the best job of his life was at Wyndam Place when Diane was the manager and he did maintenance work. 

Don enjoyed woodworking using skills passed down from a family of woodworkers and after retirement researched family genealogy and history, calling it Unser Leit Genealogy. Most of all, he loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Diane of Hays, two sons, Don Waldschmidt II and wife Lisa of Gorham and Doug Waldschmidt of Mesa, AZ, a daughter, Darcy Wellbrock and husband Glenn of Wichita, a brother, Greg Waldschmidt of Kansas City, two sisters, Virginia Kasper of Olathe and Barbara Sanborn and husband Les of Hutchinson, ten grandchildren, Dave Wellbrock and wife Jessi, Amber Wellbrock, Ashlenn Wiltcher and husband Brandon, Eustacia, Vashti, Jada, Asher, Radiah and Zaide Waldschmidt, and Joshua Waldschmidt and wife Alexandria, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, JoAnn Schmidtberger and husband Verlin, and his brother-in-law, Jim Kasper.

Mass of Christian Burial will at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Richard Daise officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 on Tuesday and from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 on Wednesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Donald J. 'Don' Waldschmidt

Howard Wayne Lindberg, 78, passed away August 8, 2023, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, Kan. He was born December 30, 1944, in Great Bend, to Ernest and Lucile (Weathers) Lindberg. 

He married Karen (Rinker) Lindholm on November 6, 1986, in Great Bend.

At the age of nine, Howard and his brother Jerry were the first of three in Great Bend to get polio in the early 1950s. &nbsp;In high school he worked for Robert Weaver at his veterinary clinic and summers working with his Uncle Elmo Weathers on the farm. &nbsp;

Howard attended Hutchinson Community College and graduated from Fort Hays State University with a bachelor’s in business administration in 1966. &nbsp;

He moved to Emporia working for Hershel Shepherd, an old Army buddy of his Dad’s, first in the office at S &amp; S Oil and Propane and then at the family-owned Admire State Bank. He was personnel officer for the city of Emporia for 7 ½ years before moving back to Great Bend. &nbsp;In Great Bend Howard was city clerk (1979 – 1985), and also worked at CPI and as the oil/gas appraiser for Barton County before retiring in June of 2010. &nbsp;In retirement he worked part-time as a driver for Sunflower Diversified Services.

Howard was an active member of the Great Bend Optimist Club, Lake Barton Golf Club and Barton County Historical Society. He was a former president of the City Clerks and Municipal Finance Officers Association of Kansas and former director of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. 

He loved to golf and enjoyed spending time with family. Howard organized the Lindberg cousins’ reunions and was proud of his family’s Swedish heritage. &nbsp;A trip of a lifetime was a cruise with Karen and several cousins to Alaska in 2012.

He was born December 30, 1944, in Great Bend, to Ernest and Lucile (Weathers) Lindberg. He married Karen (Rinker) Lindholm on November 6, 1986, in Great Bend.At the age of nine, Howard and his brother Jerry were the first of three in Great Bend to get polio in the early 1950s. &nbsp;In high school he worked for Robert Weaver at his veterinary clinic and summers working with his Uncle Elmo Weathers on the farm. &nbsp;Howard attended Hutchinson Community College and graduated from Fort Hays State University with a bachelor’s in business administration in 1966. &nbsp;He moved to Emporia working for Hershel Shepherd, an old Army buddy of his Dad’s, first in the office at S &amp; S Oil and Propane and then at the family-owned Admire State Bank. He was personnel officer for the city of Emporia for 7 ½ years before moving back to Great Bend. &nbsp;In Great Bend Howard was city clerk (1979 – 1985), and also worked at CPI and as the oil/gas appraiser for Barton County before retiring in June of 2010. &nbsp;In retirement he worked part-time as a driver for Sunflower Diversified Services.Howard was an active member of the Great Bend Optimist Club, Lake Barton Golf Club and Barton County Historical Society. He was a former president of the City Clerks and Municipal Finance Officers Association of Kansas and former director of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. He loved to golf and enjoyed spending time with family. Bernadette Christine Luedke, 65, a wife, mother, grandmother, nurse assistant and entrepreneur, of Atwood, KS, died unexpectedly on August 9, 2023, at Rawlins County Health Center in Atwood, KS. Bernadette was born in Atwood, Kansas on September 21, 1957, to Eugene and Virjean Reeh.

She was baptized in her Catholic faith, had her first communion and confirmation all at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She graduated from Atwood High School in 1975. 

Through her life she worked as a nurse’s assistant at the Atwood Hospital, a manager at Atwood Good Samaritan, Assistant Manager at Walmart, a caregiver for several young children in Atwood, a guardian to several adults with disabilities, and ran B’s Boutique, a jewelry shop. Bernadette was a devoted wife to Dennis Luedke. They were married June 14, 1975, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atwood. She was excited with joy when Shane was born on December 13, 1979, then again when Sheena joined the family on July 6, 1988. She fought many battles with her health over the years. She was also a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Bernadette was strong in her Catholic faith. She worshiped at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in&nbsp;Atwood and enjoyed helping with mass and doing anything else she could to help the church. Most recently she also volunteered on the Junior Miss Committee and Buffs Stampede Carnival. She always enjoyed her yard and vegetable and flower gardens. She loved to travel and care for other people. Bernadette is survived by her husband; her children, Shane and Sheena Luedke (Lane Rietcheck); her grandchildren, Jayden Ashford and Kian Brogan; her sister Bea Suppes (Mike); several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Bernadette was preceded in death by her parents and in-laws, Norman and Bonna Lee Luedke; brother-in-law, James Luedke and several extended family members. Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m., with a vigil at 7:00 p.m., Monday, August 14, 2023, at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood. Funeral Mass is at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Atwood, with burial in Mt. Calvary, Atwood.

Elmer Lawrence Rowe, 89, passed away on August 10, 2023, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. He was born on July 10, 1934. 

Elmer was married to Mary Ann Augustine for “47 years” before her passing over 30 years ago.

A lifetime resident of Great Bend, Elmer was a jack of all trades. He spent many years working as a dishwasher. Elmer was a member of the First Bible Baptist Church and being a “western man,” loved horses.

Survivors include four sons, Kenneth Rowe, Charles Rowe, William Rowe, and John McGuire; a daughter, Connie (Jose) Montelongo of Hoisington, Kansas; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; multiple siblings; and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and two sons, Ronald McGuire and William McGuire.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.

Lisa Anne Jones, 56, passed away on August 9, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi – St. Francis, Wichita, Kansas. She was born on January 21, 1967, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Bill and Mary (Cook) Jones.&nbsp;

A lifetime resident of Great Bend, Lisa was a graduate of Great Bend High School and Barton Community College. 

She worked as a secretary of KMW Front End Loaders. 

Lisa was a member of the First Christian Church, enjoyed reading and watching T.V., and loved her pets, especially her chihuahua, Annie.&nbsp;

Survivors include her mother, Mary, of Great Bend; a brother, Don (Brenda) Jones of Great Bend; two sisters, Karen (Dennis) Hickel and Kathy (Dwight) Tittle, all of Great Bend; a nephew, William Jones of Great Bend; two nieces, Julietha and Sarah Jones, both of Great Bend; an aunt, Juanita Thomas of Edgerton, Missouri; and numerous cousins. 

She was preceded in death by her father; aunt, Velda Roberts; and cousin, Jeffery Roberts.

While Lisa may have been taken from us too soon, she shared her gift of life through her ability to be an organ donor.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Friends are welcome to sign the register book at Bryant Funeral Home during business hours. A private family graveside will be scheduled for a later date.

Rebecca Ann Perry was born October 12, 1939, to Albert and Ethyl (Kaump) Stoltenberg in Grand Island, Nebraska. Soon after, Al’s job as Safeway grocery manager relocated them to Smith Center, Kansas. Here she discovered the place she would always consider “home” and met her lifelong friend, Kaye Mason. An only child, there is no doubt she was somewhat spoiled by her father, whom she adored.

Becky attended high school at Colby Community High School, graduating with the class of 1957. A member of the Music Programs Honor Society, Vice President of her sophomore class, Pep Club Vice President, and Band President her senior year, she was also active in Glee Club, Student Council, Kayettes, and the school’s paper where she was a proud sports editor her junior and senior years. She was known by her fellow students for her great personality, her frequent and lovely smile and her mother’s swell cooking!

Becky felt a calling for a nursing career early in life and in the Fall of 1957, she entered St. Luke's Hospital’s nursing program in Denver. 

She met her soulmate, Airman Alfred David Perry Jr., soon after. They were engaged on Christmas Day. Dave was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base and when he received word he would soon be transferred to Michigan, Becky knew she couldn’t live without him. Placing her nursing career on hold, they were united in marriage April 19, 1958, and after a whirlwind honeymoon, began their new life together in Oscoda, Michigan. Their first year was magical and, much to their delight, Deborah Louise was born on their first anniversary. Cheryl Lynn soon followed and although the family was transferred frequently by the Air Force, Becky made a home wherever they landed. Katherine Marie came along in 1964 (oops), and their family was complete. Her love for her husband and children was boundless. 

Becky was active with the base activities and soon was elected President of the Airmen Wives Club. It was in the spring of 1973, that tragedy struck, when a fall took the life of Becky’s soulmate and husband of 15 years. No words could describe her loss. She gathered her children and headed to Hill City, Kansas to be close to her mother and try to heal.

Becky bought a modest home, settled in with the children, and immediately went to work at the Graham County Hospital as a ward clerk. With her mother and eldest daughter’s help with the other children, she enrolled in the nursing program at Fort Hays State University. The next four years, she tirelessly worked at the hospital and was educated, traveling the 120 miles each day to graduate magna cum laude in 1977. Through it all, she remained active in her children’s lives through 4-H, Girl Scouts, Explorer Scouts, and a variety of junior high and high school activities.

Her compassion and empathy for people continued to move her along in her medical career. She trained and joined Graham County EMS and developed a home health program followed by a hospice program for the county. She believed you didn’t work for the people signing your paycheck, but for the patient in your care and it showed in everything she did. 

When offered the job as Director of Nursing, she took it reluctantly, knowing it would mean less time in actual patient care but believing she could make a difference in the totality of care the patient would receive. Becky was the first to volunteer to cover a shift over a holiday or vacation so she could connect more closely with the patients. She was a powerhouse of compassion not only for the patients, but for her staff.

With the children all grown, Becky often talked of retiring on a small piece of land with a garden and some livestock, and this dream started to become a reality when she purchased 19 acres just north of town and placed a double wide and shop on it. Partnering up with her companion, Glenn “Bud” Wright, Ringneck Ranch was born. The pair cleared land, erected pens, and built a tiny town of roosting structures for the many pheasants and quail they raised. Soon the family would find baby pigs and lambs, cozy in their den and storage room, Becky too kindhearted to have them out in the cold of late winter. Calves were added and a large, raised garden was built. Becky loved the antics of the livestock and encouraged all wildlife to find sanctuary on her property. On occasion, she would allow a youth to try their luck at bowhunting turkeys there, but she venomously chased off any other prospective hunters. 

Forever compassionate, she cared for both her mother and her companion Bud at her home until their passing. As her own health began to deteriorate, she moved to Dawson Place Nursing Home in the early winter of 2019. She left this life peacefully, July 2, 2023.

Becky is survived by her daughters, Deb Gansel, Cheryl Lee, and Kathy Cameron; her grandchildren, Michelle Billips, Mike Horton, Katrina Lee, Brittany Lee, David Cameron and Hannah Cameron; her great-grandchildren, Gabi Bryant, Gracie Billips, Garrett Billips, Greeley Billips, Raif Horton, Shannon McDonald, Hope McDonald Smith, Trey Wilcox, Wyatt Rayburn, Pallas Howard, Olivia Cameron, David Bruce Cameron, Khloe Johnson, Elliana Cameron, and Kehlani Cameron; and great-great grandchild, Saige Bryant.

Becky has always understood the joy and heartache of the nursing profession, especially that of the nurse’s aide staff in extended care facilities. As such, memorials will be to the Nurse’s Aide Staff of Dawson Place in Hill City and may be sent in care of Stinemetz Funeral Home, 522 N. Pomeroy, Hill City, Kansas 67642. 

Services will be held August 18, 2023, at 3 p.m. at Stinemetz Funeral Home, Hill City. The family invites all who loved her to attend. Private interment will be at a later date.

Soon after, Al’s job as Safeway grocery manager relocated them to Smith Center, Kansas. Here she discovered the place she would always consider “home” and met her lifelong friend, Kaye Mason. An only child, there is no doubt she was somewhat spoiled by her father, whom she adored.Becky attended high school at Colby Community High School, graduating with the class of 1957. A member of the Music Programs Honor Society, Vice President of her sophomore class, Pep Club Vice President, and Band President her senior year, she was also active in Glee Club, Student Council, Kayettes, and the school’s paper where she was a proud sports editor her junior and senior years. She was known by her fellow students for her great personality, her frequent and lovely smile and her mother’s swell cooking!Becky felt a calling for a nursing career early in life and in the Fall of 1957, she entered St. Luke's Hospital’s nursing program in Denver. She met her soulmate, Airman Alfred David Perry Jr., soon after. They were engaged on Christmas Day. Dave was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base and when he received word he would soon be transferred to Michigan, Becky knew she couldn’t live without him. Placing her nursing career on hold, they were united in marriage April 19, 1958, and after a whirlwind honeymoon, began their new life together in Oscoda, Michigan. Their first year was magical and, much to their delight, Deborah Louise was born on their first anniversary. Cheryl Lynn soon followed and although the family was transferred frequently by the Air Force, Becky made a home wherever they landed. Katherine Marie came along in 1964 (oops), and their family was complete. Her love for her husband and children was boundless. Becky was active with the base activities and soon was elected President of the Airmen Wives Club. It was in the spring of 1973, that tragedy struck, when a fall took the life of Becky’s soulmate and husband of 15 years. No words could describe her loss. She gathered her children and headed to Hill City, Kansas to be close to her mother and try to heal.Becky bought a modest home, settled in with the children, and immediately went to work at the Graham County Hospital as a ward clerk. With her mother and eldest daughter’s help with the other children, she enrolled in the nursing program at Fort Hays State University. The next four years, she tirelessly worked at the hospital and was educated, traveling the 120 miles each day to graduate magna cum laude in 1977. Through it all, she remained active in her children’s lives through 4-H, Girl Scouts, Explorer Scouts, and a variety of junior high and high school activities.Her compassion and empathy for people continued to move her along in her medical career. She trained and joined Graham County EMS and developed a home health program followed by a hospice program for the county. She believed you didn’t work for the people signing your paycheck, but for the patient in your care and it showed in everything she did. When offered the job as Director of Nursing, she took it reluctantly, knowing it would mean less time in actual patient care but believing she could make a difference in the totality of care the patient would receive. Becky was the first to volunteer to cover a shift over a holiday or vacation so she could connect more closely with the patients. She was a powerhouse of compassion not only for the patients, but for her staff.With the children all grown, Becky often talked of retiring on a small piece of land with a garden and some livestock, and this dream started to become a reality when she purchased 19 acres just north of town and placed a double wide and shop on it. Partnering up with her companion, Glenn “Bud” Wright, Ringneck Ranch was born. The pair cleared land, erected pens, and built a tiny town of roosting structures for the many pheasants and quail they raised. Soon the family would find baby pigs and lambs, cozy in their den and storage room, Becky too kindhearted to have them out in the cold of late winter. Calves were added and a large, raised garden was built. Becky loved the antics of the livestock and encouraged all wildlife to find sanctuary on her property. On occasion, she would allow a youth to try their luck at bowhunting turkeys there, but she venomously chased off any other prospective hunters. Forever compassionate, she cared for both her mother and her companion Bud at her home until their passing. As her own health began to deteriorate, she moved to Dawson Place Nursing Home in the early winter of 2019. She left this life peacefully, July 2, 2023.Becky is survived by her daughters, Deb Gansel, Cheryl Lee, and Kathy Cameron; her grandchildren, Michelle Billips, Mike Horton, Katrina Lee, Brittany Lee, David Cameron and Hannah Cameron; her great-grandchildren, Gabi Bryant, Gracie Billips, Garrett Billips, Greeley Billips, Raif Horton, Shannon McDonald, Hope McDonald Smith, Trey Wilcox, Wyatt Rayburn, Pallas Howard, Olivia Cameron, David Bruce Cameron, Khloe Johnson, Elliana Cameron, and Kehlani Cameron; and great-great grandchild, Saige Bryant.Becky has always understood the joy and heartache of the nursing profession, especially that of the nurse’s aide staff in extended care facilities. As such, memorials will be to the Nurse’s Aide Staff of Dawson Place in Hill City and may be sent in care of Stinemetz Funeral Home, 522 N. Pomeroy, Hill City, Kansas 67642. Services will be held August 18, 2023, at 3 p.m. at Stinemetz Funeral Home, Hill City. The family invites all who loved her to attend. Leo LeRoy Morrill

Mary Margaret Werth, 73, died August 3, 2023, at Ascension St. John Jane Phillips Hospital, Bartlesville, OK. She was born September 5, 1949, in Okeene, OK, to Henry and Marie (Kirchner) Huhman.

Mary attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Okeene, OK, and was a 1968 graduate of Okeene High School. 

She was employed as the head cashier at St. Mary’s Hospital, Enid, OK, until 1985. Mary was a bookkeeper and worked for various businesses from 1985 to 2015. 

She was a member of the Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson, KS.

Mary enjoyed sewing, needle crafting, and making blankets for the church Altar Society. She was known for making the ‘best bierocks in the state of Kansas’. Mary had a love for her pets, but her greatest love and source of joy was her family and friends. She thoroughly loved being a wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend.

On May 11, 1985, Mary married Ronald Werth, and they moved to Kansas. They shared over 38 years of marriage.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald Werth of Hutchinson, KS; children, Annie (Brian Orth) Werth of Sedgwick, KS, and Phillip Werth of Hutchinson, KS; grandson, Trexton Murphy; siblings, Rose (Jim) Monahan of Murrysville, PA, and Anthony (Judy) Huhman of Enid, OK; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents.

Rosary will be 6:30 p.m. Friday, August 11, 2023, at Elliott Mortuary. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, August 11, 2023, with the family to receive friends immediately following the rosary until 8 p.m. on Friday, at Elliott Mortuary. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 12, 2023, at the Church of the Holy Cross, 2631 Independence Road, Hutchinson, KS. Vera LaVerne Beneda, 87, of Goodland, KS passed away at the Logan County Hospital in Oakley, KS on July 30, 2023.&nbsp; She was born on August 24, 1935 to Ralph and Olive Bell (Kirkendall) Palmer in St. Francis, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was united in marriage to Alfred M. Beneda on December 31, 1955 in Oberlin, KS.&nbsp; The couple lived in several locations before they settled in Goodland, KS.

Vera was a devoted mother/housewife, while her children were young.&nbsp; She also worked as a housekeeper for more than 25 years at the Goodland hospital.&nbsp; She was also a personal housekeeper for many others.

Vera was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., GOODsam LANDers Club, and the Smoky Garden Committee.&nbsp; She loved playing games, taking pictures, flower gardening and spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her sons, Merle Beneda (Nina Howard), Guffy, CO; Charles Beneda, Goodland, KS; Kenny Beneda (Marcie), Wilson, KS; Cindy Horton (Dan), Oakley, KS; Steve Beneda, Florida; her twin sister Valeria Coleman, Holcomb, KS; and her 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alfred, son, Allan, two brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 6, 2023 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. MT at Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland.&nbsp;&nbsp;
