Members of the Wonder Women League are sewing to protect our heroes at HaysMed.

About seven members of the group are making washable, cloth face masks and headbands to supplement personal protective equipment at the hospital.

The hospital has 600 nurses alone, according to Nikki Mihm, volunteer coordinator.

According to Rep. Roger Marshall's office using modeling, Ellis County could expect 48 to 99 hospital admissions and six to nine deaths due to the coronavirus.

All of the material for the project has been donated, said Rhonda Meyerhoff, WWL co-chair, although HaysMed provided some elastic for the masks.

"This is a huge purpose," Meyerhoff said. "I want us all to be safe. I want all of our front-line medical staff to not get [the coronavirus] and to be able to go home at the end of all this back to their families."

Meyerhoff said she felt working on this project is distracting her from the chaos all around her and the virus that she can't control.

"I feel in some way I am helping," she said. "If it just saves one person, all of the time and effort is worth it."

The headbands will have large buttons on both sides to which nurses and doctors can hook their face masks to save irritation on their ears.

The headbands are being made with donated gently used, laundered T-shirt material.

HaysMed is only accepting masks made of heavier quilt material and only a specified pattern. Any other donated masks are being given to area clinics and support staff.

Seven women from the group are working on the project — some cutting fabric, some machine sewing and others hand sewing buttons on the headbands.

The women are moving materials back and forth through no-contact procedures.

Meyerhoff acknowledged many other volunteers in the community are also sewing PPE for medical providers and WWL is just a small part of a much greater effort to protect the area's medical professionals.

"The way I look at it," Meyerhoff said, "if I was in the hospital, I would want them to have a mask that was clean and safe or, if my husband was in the hospital, I would want them to be safe.

"We are not just doing it for the nurses. We are doing it for the patients too."

The WWL is still looking for volunteers to help them in making the PPE. Those interested in volunteering can contact Cristina Janney, who is also a WWL member, at crisksu@yahoo.com.

The project organizers are also looking for button donations. The buttons must be 5/8 inch or larger.

The group hopes to have its first set of PPE to HaysMed by April 13. The items will be sterilized before they are given to staff.

"Every mask, every headband counts," Meyerhoff said.

Wonder Women League is a nonprofit group that is under the umbrella of the United Way. They support projects that support children and families in the Ellis County.

The coronavirus outbreak has forced the group to put several of its pending community projects on hold. Meyerhoff said this project is a way the WWL women can continue to give back in this time of crisis.

In addition to the mask project, the WWL also made a small donation to help members of the community with persistent mental illness with groceries. Terri Braun spearheaded that effort.

A baker’s dozen of organizations that evaluate online higher education programs have recently ranked 40 online degrees and programs at Fort Hays State University as among the best in the nation for 2020.&nbsp;

The rankings include seven national No. 1 rankings and one statewide No. 1 rating. A total of 25 Fort Hays State online programs were among the top 10 in the nation in the various rankings, and all but two place FHSU among the top 20 in the nation.&nbsp;

In all 40 rankings, Fort Hays State was rated the best in Kansas.&nbsp;

The rankings involve evaluations of individual degrees, departments and programs. Some individual programs and degrees are evaluated by more than one organization.&nbsp;

FHSU earns 40 best-in-nation online rankings

WASHINGTON&nbsp;– U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, R-Kan., today announced $15 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to support 18 community health centers across Kansas and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2020/04/08/hhs-awards-billion-to-health-centers-in-historic-covid19-response.html">grants</a>, made available through the resources provided in the Phase III&nbsp;Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act,&nbsp;will be used to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic through detection, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the virus.

First Care Clinic and Sheridan County each received a grant.

“Community health centers are on the frontlines of our fight against COVID-19 and remain critical to our ability to stop the spread of this virus,”&nbsp;said Sen. Moran.&nbsp;“I have been urging the administration to move quickly to make relief provided in Phase III available to our state, and these resources will provide timely support to Kansas health centers.”

Moran: NW Kan. groups among those receiving health center grants

In my last column, I wrote about the remarkable ways Tiger Nation was responding to the global COVID-19 pandemic. As I stated then, we are not only delivering our typical high-quality, engaging academic program-we are also committed to converting and transitioning as many of our events and services as possible during this crisis. Today I am thrilled to share a sampling of examples of how the campus is delivering on that promise. For instance:

It broke my heart to have to postpone commencement until it is safe for people to gather again. But that is not going to stop us from celebrating our outstanding students! I recently shared our commitment to deliver a commencement regalia kit to every spring graduate so that they can celebrate with their family and friends in the moment. No later than the second week of June, each graduate will receive a kit with a gown, a hood (for graduate students, mortarboard, tassel, commencement program and their diploma in an official Fort Hays State University diploma case. We hope our students will use this kit to celebrate their great achievement with the family and friends who helped them throughout their academic careers. We also hope they will post their photos on social media so we can like and congratulate and join them in celebrating.

The Writing Center is offering online appointments to all FHSU students for the remainder of the spring semester while campus is closed. There are two different kinds of appointments: synchronous – scheduled appointments – using video, audio, chat, and screen-sharing technologies, and eTutoring, which is asynchronous – available any time – for those students whose access to the internet may be limited or slow, or whose schedules may not allow them to meet with a consultant in real-time.&nbsp;

Forsyth Library staff, well known for their connectivity and creativity, continue to provide live research help to students, faculty and staff through the Ask-A-Librarian chat service. Our electronic resources for learning, teaching and research feature over 200 platforms and products for finding articles, ebooks, media and more.

On Friday, April 24, our Black and Gold Leadership Conference goes virtual. The conference will explore adaptive leadership, help our students develop strategies for leading in a virtual world, and create experiments to increase individual leadership capacity. The Friday session will be supplemented with an optional coaching session with our guest facilitator, Jason Bosch, who has over 15 years of experience with leadership and organizational development.&nbsp;

And we are not just keeping the minds active – our Tiger Wellness Center is also converting our fitness challenges, classes and educational sessions to social media. Each week, challenges will be posted on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Just look for #MoveMonday, #ToneUpTuesday, #WisdomWednesday, #ThriveThursday, #FoodFriday, and #WeekendWorkout. Short versions of classes are being posted to show everyone how to perform the workouts, as well as more in-depth videos educating folks on how to do an exercise. Wellness Center staff will also share healthy recipes. Our outstanding staff is on standby to provide helpful information and consult with students to help them achieve their fitness goals.

On April 28, one of our honor societies, Eta Sigma Delta, will conduct its induction ceremony in a fully virtual mode with Zoom. ESD is the international honor society for tourism and hospitality management students. The ceremony will include both virtual and traditional on-campus students being inducted from California, Colorado, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and Italy. Students will receive a certificate, pin, and graduation cord. The guest speaker will be Jordan Carlisle (an FHSU alum) who is now the assistant general manager of the Moxy Hotel (Marriott brand) in downtown New York City. He will share his FHSU story and industry experience and the challenges of working in NYC during the coronavirus pandemic. I love the fact that despite all the challenges, we will continue to honor, inspire, and be inspired by our students.

Our Management Development Center (fhsu.edu/cob/mdc/) is providing free mini-trainings (30-microburst sessions scheduled via Zoom); free Hays Chamber virtual lunch-and-learns (1 hour, Zoom, scheduled every Thursday, as well as online trainings (approximately 4 hours of content, both synchronous and asynchronous, $20 a person). Topics include “Running an Effective Virtual Meeting”; “Work (or Home) Wellness: Preventing Health Risks Affecting Workers Who Sit”; “Staying Positive in Challenging Times”; and much, much more!

And we have not forgotten our faculty and staff. Thanks to Dr. Gene Rice, a professor in our Department of Philosophy, and in response to the many changes in our lives these days, he has invited our community to join together on Zoom once a week for a short course in mindfulness and relaxation meditation. When practiced over time, such meditations can lead to stress reduction and help us cope with mental and emotional anxiety. Great idea Dr. Rice!

One of my favorite spring events is our Student Organization and Award Reception, scheduled for April 30. Awards will be presented through Zoom by our Homecoming King and Queen, Bryson Homman and Jacki Dougherty. Winners will be celebrated on social media.

And imagine – this is just a small sampling of how this nimble and innovative community is coming together! We are also delivering education in unique ways to ensure our students are getting their labs, clinical hours, and service-learning assignments completed. Student teachers are assisting as colleagues in our newly-mandated, all-virtual learning world, and more than 4,000 students in China can complete their FHSU assignments on their telephones!&nbsp;

At FHSU, we continue to utilize technology while keeping that important human connection front and center. I love this place!

Our outstanding staff is on standby to provide helpful information and consult with students to help them achieve their fitness goals.On April 28, one of our honor societies, Eta Sigma Delta, will conduct its induction ceremony in a fully virtual mode with Zoom. ESD is the international honor society for tourism and hospitality management students. The ceremony will include both virtual and traditional on-campus students being inducted from California, Colorado, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and Italy. Students will receive a certificate, pin, and graduation cord. The guest speaker will be Jordan Carlisle (an FHSU alum) who is now the assistant general manager of the Moxy Hotel (Marriott brand) in downtown New York City. He will share his FHSU story and industry experience and the challenges of working in NYC during the coronavirus pandemic. I love the fact that despite all the challenges, we will continue to honor, inspire, and be inspired by our students.Our Management Development Center (fhsu.edu/cob/mdc/) is providing free mini-trainings (30-microburst sessions scheduled via Zoom); free Hays Chamber virtual lunch-and-learns (1 hour, Zoom, scheduled every Thursday, as well as online trainings (approximately 4 hours of content, both synchronous and asynchronous, $20 a person). Topics include “Running an Effective Virtual Meeting”; “Work (or Home) Wellness: Preventing Health Risks Affecting Workers Who Sit”; “Staying Positive in Challenging Times”; and much, much more!And we have not forgotten our faculty and staff. Thanks to Dr. Gene Rice, a professor in our Department of Philosophy, and in response to the many changes in our lives these days, he has invited our community to join together on Zoom once a week for a short course in mindfulness and relaxation meditation. When practiced over time, such meditations can lead to stress reduction and help us cope with mental and emotional anxiety. Great idea Dr. Rice!One of my favorite spring events is our Student Organization and Award Reception, scheduled for April 30. Awards will be presented through Zoom by our Homecoming King and Queen, Bryson Homman and Jacki Dougherty. Winners will be celebrated on social media.And imagine – this is just a small sampling of how this nimble and innovative community is coming together! We are also delivering education in unique ways to ensure our students are getting their labs, clinical hours, and service-learning assignments completed. Student teachers are assisting as colleagues in our newly-mandated, all-virtual learning world, and more than 4,000 students in China can complete their FHSU assignments on their telephones!&nbsp;At FHSU, we continue to utilize technology while keeping that important human connection front and center. I love this place!

Three-day weather outlook

Since families are spending more time at home there is a good chance the food bill is on the rise. If you are noticing that many of the items being purchased are being consumed as between-meal-snacks, you will want to keep reading for some healthier, low-cost alternatives.&nbsp;

Whenever I visit with young families about snacking I like to remind them that young children have a smaller stomach than an older child or adult. There is a good reason they are hungry between meals. My advice is that “Snacking is fine – Just make sure it is a healthy snack.”

So what types of food constitute a healthy snack? Basically any fresh fruit or vegetable can provide a wide array of nutrients and an added bonus of fiber to give a feeling of fullness. Fruits and vegetables have been touted as natures fast food, because often times you just have to wash, peel and enjoy! If fresh produce isn’t available, look for frozen fruits and vegetables. Canned items can work too, but be aware they may have added salt and sugar, so look for fruit packed in water or fruit juice.

Grains, especially whole grains, provide energy and fiber for your growing family. Look for cereals where the sugar content is below 7 grams per serving. Avoid choosing cereals that list sugar as the first ingredient. Preparing your own snack mix with a whole grain cereal, nuts, seeds, and dried fruit can be less expensive and a healthier alternative than the highly processed prepared snacks.

A popular snack, Peanut Butter Balls, is easy to make and combines two food groups: grains and protein. If you have someone in your family with a peanut allergy you may substitute sunbutter, which is made from sunflower seeds. The recipe for Peanut Butter Balls follows:

Directions: Wash hands with warm water and soap. Mash the beans with a fork in a bowl until smooth. Add the sweetener and vanilla and stir. Add peanut butter. Stir until blended. Stir in the oatmeal. Shape the mixture into balls. (makes about 50 balls) Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

You can use a blender or food processor to mix ingredients before shaping into balls. You can store peanut butter balls in the freezer. Lay them out on a cookie sheet and freeze. Then store in a freezer bag. Thaw for 5 minutes before serving.

Involve your kids in the planning and preparation of their healthy snack. This time spent together will provide some special memories. I have a handout titled, Snack Strategies For Kids, that I am happy to share if you send me an e-mail.

KRUG: Healthy snacking ideas

Across
 Kansas, people find themselves searching for ways to grieve for, 
remember and celebrate the lives of their loved ones that have died, all
 during a time when they aren’t allowed to gather in large groups.

School
 buildings are closed. People are setting aside sports, concerts and 
church services. Some work from home. Kansans are effectively living 
under <a href="https://governor.kansas.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/EO20-16.pdf" target="_blank">a statewide pause order</a>
 from the governor. But some are learning the harsh reality that you 
can’t put a pause on death and the grief that comes with it.

Funeral planning had fallen to Michael Webb, an economics teacher 
turned caregiver and grant writer from Wichita, when his mother and 
father died years before. But <a href="https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/wichita-ks/alan-webb-9097700" target="_blank">when he lost his brother, Alan</a>,
 about two weeks ago, the funeral home told him only 10 people could be 
there — Webb and his wife, six pallbearers, the minister and one lone 
guest.

“That’s not the funeral that my brother would want,” Webb said. “That’s not the funeral his friends would want.”

He
 ultimately decided to delay the funeral and only have a small graveside
 service, again, limited to 10 people. The cemetery told him the only 
available time they had was 4 days after Alan’s death, and they’d only 
be able to put out one seat.

“Alan deserved a really nice 
memorial service where his friends could come and celebrate with him,” 
Webb said. “And we will be planning that, we just don’t know when it’s 
going to be.”

Because of the limit on the number of people who 
can gather, Webb’s stepdaughter could only stand on the side of the road
 and wave goodbye as the casket left Wichita headed for a burial plot in
 Topeka.

“Some immediate families are over 10 people, which creates some problems,” said Pam Scott, executive director of the<a href="http://www.ksfda.wildapricot.org/" target="_blank"> Kansas Funeral Directors Association</a>. “(Funeral homes) are doing all they can to work with the families, and most families have been understanding.”

Funeral
 homes and mortuaries are deemed an essential service and are exempt 
from the governor’s stay-at-home order, but they still need to limit 
opportunities to spread the virus.

“It’s the unknown factor,” said Mack Smith, executive secretary at the <a href="https://ksbma.ks.gov/about-us" target="_blank">Kansas Board of Mortuary Arts</a>. “And funeral homes sure don’t want to have any of their people getting this nasty thing and spreading it to others.”

He said the agency has received a few calls from people upset or confused by the restrictions.

“Change
 is tough for a lot of us,” he said. “And not being able to sit down in a
 chapel and say goodbye to mom or dad or a friend — that’s a tough thing
 to do.”

Even alternatives such as delaying a service, maybe for months, can 
prevent people from fully grieving. Mary Rush lost her father right at 
the beginning of the outbreak in Kansas. Because her siblings live 
outside of the state, including two in Europe, it was impossible for 
them to get together — and phone calls just didn’t cut it.

“That 
peace is missing for us right now,” Rush said. “I don’t feel the impact 
of that every day. But it does come from time to time.”

The desire to slow the spread of COVID-19 hinders people who want to comfort those in mourning, too. At <a href="https://chapelhillwichita.org/" target="_blank">Chapel Hill United Methodist Church</a> in Wichita, the Rev. Jeff Gannon has had to work with grieving families over the phone, rather than his customary home visits.

“Normally,
 it’s face-to-face where I sit down with families and together we talk 
through the service and we plan and we cry and we laugh,” Gannon said.

Now,
 he and others wanting to provide comfort must be more creative. For 
him, that means sending a card, making a phone call, or maybe even 
simply saying a prayer. But he suggests it’s those kinds of things, even
 if imperfect or incomplete, that can fill grieving people with the hope
 needed to make it to the other side of a tough situation.

“Call 
it intuition, call it the Holy Spirit, call it whatever you want,” 
Gannon said, “but I urge people to follow up on those nudges, because 
more often than not that’s a way to connect at the most important time.”

🎤Post Podcast: Hays Chamber asks businesses, "What do you need?"

While the current coronavirus pandemic continues to alter just about
every part of everyday life across the country, one of the first hit was the
sports world. 

The NBA's announcement on the evening of March 11 that it was suspending its season started a trickle-down effect. The next day the Kansas State High School Activities Association canceled their state basketball tournaments. The
NCAA followed suit with the unprecedented canceling of their basketball tournament
and eventually ended the entire remaining spring sports season.

“There’s no manual for it,” said Fort Hays State Athletic
Director Curtis Hammeke. “None of us have been down this road before so we’re
just adjusting on the run and trying to make the best of the situation.”

While some of the winter sports were already completed, the Fort Hays State’s women’s basketball team was in
Warrensburg, Mo., for the start of the NCAA Division II Central Regional when word came that it was being canceled.&nbsp;

The Tiger wrestling team had five members in Sioux Falls, S.D., preparing for the start of the
wrestling national championships and a couple of track and field athletes were preparing
for the national indoor meet in Birmingham, Ala.

The Tiger baseball and softball seasons were in full gear,
football had already started spring practices, and outdoor track and field was
gearing up for the start of their season when they found out they were being shut down.

Recently, the NCAA ruled that spring sport student-athletes
will be granted an additional season of eligibility and, while Hammeke applauded the decision, he said it does bring with it some unintended consequences.

“It’s certainly the right thing to do to give. You think about those seniors who lost their final year going down the stretch, but then
you bring an incoming class of freshman and they’re frustrated about that,” Hammeke said. “It has a snowball effect to it and some of those ramifications are
negative, even though I think all of the intentions were good.”

Even though most Division II student-athletes, including
those at Fort Hays State, are on a partial scholarship Hammeke said funding will
be the biggest challenge.

“The NCAA made that decision but they’re not helping with
the finance of it so technically you’re now trying to fund two classes, your (incoming)
freshman class and your (returning) senior class. You have one class on top of
what you're budgeted to cover,” Hammeke said. 

“It’s a pretty difficult thing to say, 'No we’re not going to give you a
scholarship but go ahead and come back and do your senior year again.' We’re trying to work through the budget ramifications of that and it’s
going to be challenge at our level nationwide.”

One of the FHSU Athletic Department’s key fundraisers is the
annual Tiger Auction and Dinner. Hammeke said, as of now, they are planning to host the event as scheduled on August 22.&nbsp;

“Everything is going to be a catch-22 right now. People are
struggling. There are people losing jobs, oil prices are down so fundraising in

Most schools use the spring and summer months for fundraising
and planning for the upcoming school year. Hammeke said that is still happening
at Fort Hays State but, like many businesses, they’re doing everything from home.

“We’re all trying to anticipate what’s going to happen next,
what the next steps are going to be, but really anyone’s guess is as good as
ours," he said. "We’re trying to anticipate what we need to do moving forward and we hope that
will get a little bit clearer.”

every part of everyday life across the country, one of the first hit was the
sports world. The NBA's announcement on the evening of March 11 that it was suspending its season started a trickle-down effect. The next day the Kansas State High School Activities Association canceled their state basketball tournaments. The
NCAA followed suit with the unprecedented canceling of their basketball tournament
and eventually ended the entire remaining spring sports season.“There’s no manual for it,” said Fort Hays State Athletic
Director Curtis Hammeke. “None of us have been down this road before so we’re
just adjusting on the run and trying to make the best of the situation.”While some of the winter sports were already completed, the Fort Hays State’s women’s basketball team was in
Warrensburg, Mo., for the start of the NCAA Division II Central Regional when word came that it was being canceled.&nbsp;The Tiger wrestling team had five members in Sioux Falls, S.D., preparing for the start of the
wrestling national championships and a couple of track and field athletes were preparing
for the national indoor meet in Birmingham, Ala.<figure>

football had already started spring practices, and outdoor track and field was
gearing up for the start of their season when they found out they were being shut down.Recently, the NCAA ruled that spring sport student-athletes
will be granted an additional season of eligibility and, while Hammeke applauded the decision, he said it does bring with it some unintended consequences.“It’s certainly the right thing to do to give. You think about those seniors who lost their final year going down the stretch, but then
you bring an incoming class of freshman and they’re frustrated about that,” Hammeke said. “It has a snowball effect to it and some of those ramifications are
negative, even though I think all of the intentions were good.”Even though most Division II student-athletes, including
those at Fort Hays State, are on a partial scholarship Hammeke said funding will
be the biggest challenge.“The NCAA made that decision but they’re not helping with
the finance of it so technically you’re now trying to fund two classes, your (incoming)
freshman class and your (returning) senior class. You have one class on top of
what you're budgeted to cover,” Hammeke said. “It’s a pretty difficult thing to say, 'No we’re not going to give you a
scholarship but go ahead and come back and do your senior year again.' We’re trying to work through the budget ramifications of that and it’s
going to be challenge at our level nationwide.”One of the FHSU Athletic Department’s key fundraisers is the
annual Tiger Auction and Dinner. Hammeke said, as of now, they are planning to host the event as scheduled on August 22.&nbsp;“Everything is going to be a catch-22 right now. People are
struggling. There are people losing jobs, oil prices are down so fundraising in
and of itself will be a bigger challenge,” he said. “Unfortunately, that’s happening

'There’s no manual for it': FHSU athletics grapples with sports void

Camber Boland and her family were enjoying their dinner on their driveway last Wednesday evening where they could see and talk at a safe distance with most of their neighbors who live in the West 43rd Street cul-de-sac in Hays.

The families were eating food prepared and delivered by Paisley Pear Wine Bar, Bistro and Market — a popular downtown Hays eatery that has dramatically changed how it serves customers due to the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;

The block supper was organized by Krista Brooks, a reading teacher at Roosevelt and O'Loughlin Elementary schools, which are closed along with the rest of Hays USD 489 classrooms.

"We heard about it in Kansas City and several of us put together a flier and left it on everyone's porches," Brooks said.

She and her husband, Matt, a teacher of world history and psychology at Hays High School, are friends with the Paisley Pear owners — Shaun and Heather Musil.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"I knew we could work with Shaun and hopefully, if this takes off, we could do a different local business this week."

They also hope the idea will spread to other Hays neighborhoods.

"Even though we're doing this this one night, if it doesn't keep up&nbsp; and the businesses don't have other people picking up on this, it won't be enough to sustain them during this time, or be enough to sustain them so that they could come back if they would have to close down for&nbsp; awhile.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Most people eat out at times, so hopefully this is a way that is convenient for the businesses and the neighborhoods, in people not having to get out so much."&nbsp;

The Brooks are ardent supporters of the downtown Hays business district.

 One store told her "they've lost 75 percent of what they typically have come in. That's hard on small local businesses.

"This is a way the community can help them because so often they help us with local fundraisers and such."&nbsp;

The Paisley Pear already delivers "but not in this mass, so we're learning," Shaun Musil said. They soon figured out one order had not been filled.&nbsp;

He and Heather drove two vehicles down the cul-de-sac, loaded with bagged orders to deliver to the 10 participating homes.&nbsp;

Shaun Musil, also the current Hays mayor, was quick to give Heather credit for the project.

"My wife did most of the work," he smiled. "We have more customers interested so I hope people are patient."

Most residents were outdoors eating on driveways or the sidewalk, and took the hand-off from the Musils. At least one elderly woman asked that her food order be left on her porch.

"I've been at home for three weeks," Betty told Matt Brooks from across the street, "going nowhere except walking around our cul-de-sac."

Checking in with the neighbors as well as socializing are important aspects of the block party.

"We have a couple older couples in our neighborhood," Krista noted. "And it's a good way for the kids to see each other and have a conversation."

Haleigh Spray, a senior at Thomas More Prep-Marian and a member of the girls' golf team, was eating with her family and their dogs.

The governor's decision to close public and private K-12 schools in Kansas and issue a stay-at-home executive order to help slow the virus spread, have completely upended Haleigh's final semester of high school.

"When we first heard about the news, it was really sad, kind of like heart-breaking," Haleigh acknowledged. But I've come to terms with it. Things happen."

Haleigh says she'll miss her not going on her senior trip and "a lot of those last final memories we were going to make. Stuff like that were going to make lifelong memories.&nbsp;

"Since kindergarten through at least the first semester of my senior year, it's kind of been the same routine. You wake up, you go to school, you get home, you do your homework, you go to your sports, you go do your activities, and then you repeat.

"So," shrugged Haleigh, "it's kind of a wrench in the plans."

🎥 Neighborhood party supports local business while 'staying-at-home'

ROOKS COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 7a.m. Wednesday in Rooks County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Freightliner semi driven by Patrick W. Hageman, 59, Natoma, was northbound on County Road 25 just north of Kansas 18.

The vehicle missed a gear and rolled down the hill&nbsp; coming to rest on the driver side.

EMS transported&nbsp;Hageman to the Rooks County Health Center. The KHP did not have seat belt information.

Every gift matters. This is the slogan the Fort Hays State University Foundation has used for years in its fundraising efforts, and it probably has no truer significance than right now.

Today, the university announced that it is accelerating its efforts to help students affected financially by the COVID-19 health crisis. “We’ve had so many people ask, ‘How can we help?’ ” said Hayley Bieker, director of communications and marketing for the Foundation. “We are a family, leaning on and learning from one another. Contributions to the Student Emergency Assistance Fund are a great way to directly help our students during this challenging time.”&nbsp;

The Student Emergency Assistance Fund was established ten years ago by President Tisa Mason when she served FHSU as vice president of student affairs as a way to help students facing significant financial challenges.&nbsp; Bieker stated that the current fundraising goal for the Student Emergency Assistance Fund is set at $25,000. Brad DeMers, student body president at FHSU, said the concept that every gift matters means more to FHSU students today than perhaps ever before. “This fund will provide financial assistance to students who have nowhere else to turn - to help them stay in school,” he said. “Even if everyone chips in $5 here and there, it will help.” DeMers will lead a committee charged with reviewing the applications and deciding how funds are dispersed. “I feel like people are wanting to give back and help at this time. This is a way to provide hope and give our students a bit of relief,” he said. “I’m really excited to get financial support in the hands of our students who need it the most.”

DeMers plans to use a wide variety of platforms to inform students of the opportunity to apply for one-time assistance of up to $500. Applications can be found on the FHSU website at<a href="https://fhsu.edu/sga/student-emergency-fund.html">https://fhsu.edu/sga/student-emergency-fund.html</a>.

Students who are currently enrolled in an on-campus or online course and who have exhausted all other forms of financial assistance will meet the basic qualifications to apply for this aid. Ellis County voters have approved a pair of quarter-cent
sales taxes to help fund health services and the county’s general fund.

According to unofficial election results of Tuesday countywide
sales tax election, Ellis County voters approved a quarter-cent sales tax to fund
health services in Ellis County 4,260 to 2,261 (65 percent to 35 percent).

Voters also approved a second quarter-cent sales tax to fund
general operations within Ellis County by a vote of 3,886 to 2,630 (59&nbsp;percent to 41 percent).

The official election canvass is scheduled for April 16 at 5 p.m.
