NORTON — The Kansas Department of Transportation reopened all lanes of Interstate 70 between mile markers 82 and 87 in Gove County shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday. 

Traffic had previously been reduced to one lane in each direction while utility crews completed repairs on powerlines downed in Sunday evening's tornado.

The Ellis County Commission heard a request from the city of Victoria for help repairing sections of Old Highway 40 during the commission's meeting on Tuesday.

Ellis County Public Works Director Brendan Mackay and Victoria Mayor John Schulte discussed potential financial support to fix the deteriorating road approaches connecting Old Highway 40 to East Main and West Main streets.

The total cost to repair both streets is about $79,750. In a request letter, Schulte said while Victoria would prefer to repair both approaches, East Main Street would take priority if only one can be funded due to its higher traffic volume.

The commission will revisit the funding request at a future meeting.

Commissioner Michael Berges continued a discussion from March on creating a plan to maintain and improve roads in Ellis County subdevelopments. Commissioners heard from Ellis County resident Ty Wilson from Stonewood North Additions.

The discussion centered around using special assessment districts to allow residents in subdivisions to request road upgrades funded through their own taxes, not general county funds.

This process requires a majority petition from residents and final approval by the commission. The county cannot initiate the assessment as it must come from the residents.

Wilson said the process unfairly burdens residents with initiating and financing improvements rather than the commission proactively planning or funding them.

"If I [file a petition], which I can, I just forced your hand and added even more to your budgetary problems than you have," he said.

Berges said the commission has directed Mackay to list all subdivisions in the next 60 days, including what type of road they currently have, and provide suggestions for improvement.

Ellis County Sheriff Scott Braun discussed with commissioners a grant application that would fully cover upgrades to in-car and body cameras, docking stations, antennas and routers.

Braun also received approval to purchase 16 armored vests for detention officers for about $15,530. Funding is available in the 2025 capital outlay budget.

Commissioners approved waiving municipal waste fees for the 2025 Wild West Festival. The waiver would apply to trash hauled to the Ellis County Transfer Station during the event.

Monique Koerner and Tamara Robertson from the Cottonwood Extension District gave an update on their current programs and activities in the district.

Jami Benyshek, senior audit manager with Adams Brown, LLC, presented the 2024 Ellis County audit report to the commission.

GOVE COUNTY—The tornado that damaged or destroyed more than a dozen homes in Grinnell on Sunday had peak winds of 140mph, according to the National Weather Service in Goodland.

The weather service survey team on Tuesday upgraded the strength of the storm to an EF3 tornado. It's path of destruction was 230 yards wide.

The tornado also caused damage to both the electric and gas systems in the the community and downed 15 power poles.&nbsp; Although several families are displaced, there were no injuries.

NWS says Grinnell tornado winds peaked at 140 mph

After 21 years on the front lines, Senior Firefighter Brandon Zimmerman hung up his helmet on May 12 and bid farewell to the Hays Fire Department.

"It wasn't until the next morning that it really resonated that I was no longer part of that group. It made me realize I was part of something bigger," Zimmerman said.

Zimmerman started as a volunteer with the Ellis County Fire Department before joining the Hays Fire Department full-time on May 12, 2004.

He emphasized&nbsp;the value of passing down experience to newer firefighters and said the most fulfilling part of the job was being there for people in their darkest moments.

"Those people, they'll remember that forever," Zimmerman said. "That's been the most rewarding is helping someone, and six months down the road, you come across them and they thank you for what you did. You can't put a price on that."

Firefighters earn the title of senior firefighter after meeting service time and certification requirements, but true seniority comes through years of experience, Zimmerman said.

Zimmerman said newer firefighters look to experienced veterans for guidance and learning, which helps them better recognize and handle situations before facing them firsthand.

"It's a team effort. It's making sure you're taken care of and the person next to you is taken care of. It's a brotherhood," Zimmerman said.

Zimmerman said fire behavior and building construction have changed drastically over the years. Modern structures burn faster and hotter because of lightweight, petroleum-based materials.

Zimmerman said the job is constantly evolving, and no two emergencies are ever alike.

"It changes daily. You just have to be aware of your surroundings at all times," he said.

Although retired from the Hays Fire Department, Zimmerman will remain active as assistant chief in Munjor with the Ellis County Fire Department.

His new role focuses more on leadership and command than hands-on firefighting. The department primarily handles wildland fires, which behave differently from structure fires.

"It'll be nice to be able to take the knowledge I've acquired over 21 years, and put that toward working with the younger ones and directing them in the right way on the county side," Zimmerman said.

Zimmerman said two of his most memorable calls were the July 16, 2013, train derailment when a westbound train struck another car and derailed, and a rescue involving an individual trapped inside a grain elevator.

Zimmerman plans to spend more time with his three children and focus on expanding the family farm. He said his firefighting career took up about a third of his life.

"There's a lot that happens at home while you're away from work for a 24-hour shift," he said. "It'll be nice to be around for what's left of the kids growing up and be around my wife more."

Zimmerman originally considered the military but found the fire department the ideal path for public service after being approached by Troy Herman, then company chief in Schoenchen.

Hays firefighter retires after two decades of service

HaysMed is proud to announce the recipients of the 2025 Hospital Awards, recognizing four exceptional individuals whose dedication, compassion and leadership have made a lasting impact on patients, colleagues and the broader community.

These annual awards celebrate those who go above and beyond in their roles, exemplifying the mission and values of HaysMed.

Jared Reed, PA-C, a Physician Assistant at the HaysMed Orthopedic Institute, has been named Advanced Practice Provider of the Year. Since joining HaysMed in 2012, Jared has become a trusted member of the orthopedic team. Originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, he moved to Hays after completing PA school in Montana. 

He credits Dr. Gulraiz Cheema, HaysMed orthopedic surgeon, as a key mentor in his career, saying, “Dr. Cheema has been the biggest factor in my growth as a PA; any of my achievements are actually his.”

Jared and his wife, Ashley, have been married for 14 years and are raising six children. The family enjoys outdoor adventures and spending quality time together.

Christina “Chrissy” Hoff, BSN, RN, a charge nurse in the in-patient acute care unit, has been named the 2025 Sr. Mary J. Mollison Nurse of the Year. With 15 years at HaysMed, Chrissy provides care for patients ranging from children to those in hospice, including inpatient chemotherapy.

“I approach every patient as someone’s loved one,” Chrissy said. “Hospitalization is a very difficult time, and I want my care to help them through such a challenging experience.”

Originally from near Hoisington, Chrissy now lives in LaCrosse with her husband and three children. She enjoys running, baking, and spending time with her family.

Dr. Patricia Crawley, a cardiologist at the HaysMed DeBakey Heart Institute, has been named the 2025 Vic Eddy, MD, Physician of the Year. Her non-traditional path to medicine took her from attending college part-time in the evenings, to medical school at the University of Kansas, and an interventional cardiology fellowship in Brooklyn, New York. Today, she leads cardiac care efforts across Western Kansas, including seven outreach clinics each month.

“I truly enjoy working in a rural setting,” she said. “The people are so kind and respectful. Most anything they need from a cardiac standpoint can now be obtained at Hays Medical Center.”

Dr. Crawley expressed deep gratitude for the honor, saying, “I am so blessed to have incredible support from staff, colleagues, and administration. Even being nominated among this prestigious group of physicians is such a privilege.”

Vonda Ackerman, Senior Business Intelligence Developer in HaysMed’s IT department, is the recipient of the 2025 Norman W. Jeter Humanitarian Award. With 34 years of service, Vonda has played a vital role in shaping hospital operations and improving patient care.

“All the projects I’ve worked on have had an impact,” she said.

He credits Dr. Gulraiz Cheema, HaysMed orthopedic surgeon, as a key mentor in his career, saying, “Dr. Cheema has been the biggest factor in my growth as a PA; any of my achievements are actually his.”Jared and his wife, Ashley, have been married for 14 years and are raising six children. With 15 years at HaysMed, Chrissy provides care for patients ranging from children to those in hospice, including inpatient chemotherapy.“I approach every patient as someone’s loved one,” Chrissy said. “Hospitalization is a very difficult time, and I want my care to help them through such a challenging experience.”Originally from near Hoisington, Chrissy now lives in LaCrosse with her husband and three children. She enjoys running, baking, and spending time with her family.<figure>

Her non-traditional path to medicine took her from attending college part-time in the evenings, to medical school at the University of Kansas, and an interventional cardiology fellowship in Brooklyn, New York. Today, she leads cardiac care efforts across Western Kansas, including seven outreach clinics each month.“I truly enjoy working in a rural setting,” she said. “The people are so kind and respectful. HaysMed honors 2025 hospital award recipients for excellence in health care

We hosted our big event on May 7 and welcomed students from four local schools, plus one awesome homeschool group. From Hays, we had Holy Family Elementary, Lincoln, and Wilson join us, along with Washington Elementary from Ellis. Altogether, we had a lively crew of 151 students ready to step back in time!

Although the forecast threatened us with an 80% chance of rain, we didn’t let that dampen our spirits. We brought the fun indoors and made great use of our freshly renovated gallery space—it turned out to be the perfect backdrop for a day of pioneer adventures.

We ran two action-packed sessions: one in the morning from 9 to 11 a.m., and another in the afternoon from 12 to 2 p.m. With 5 ECHS staff members and a fantastic team of 14 volunteers (including 4 of our dedicated board trustees), we brought history to life across nine interactive stations. It was a day full of learning, laughter, and a whole lot of hands-on fun! For learning to continue in the classroom students took home our activity books provided by the Kansas Beef Council and our ECHS booklet “The Life of the Early Settlers”.

Pioneer Day 2025 at Ellis County Historical Society blast from past

Ticks and the pathogens they transmit are a significant concern for both humans and animals alike. Controlling tick populations can be difficult because a large part of their lives are spent off the animal host or are on hosts we have little control over like deer, rabbits and other animals. 

Between feeding periods, ticks are found in brush or tall grasses, especially around water areas and streams. High humidity, the presence of protective leaf litter and animals moving through the area provide a perfect habitat for ticks.

Burning pastures in the Flint Hills can significantly reduce tick populations, with burning early in the spring while ticks are still overwintering being the most effective (Salazar et al., 2024). The impact of burning is immediate, with reduced tick numbers lasting the growing season after the burn. Female ticks lay thousands of eggs and tick populations can rebound very quickly if burning isn’t maintained. 

When burning, pay special attention to thickets and areas of dense plant growth. 

Eastern redcedars are a tick hot spot (Noden et al., 2021) and an area often visited by animals. Alarmingly, not only are more ticks found in these areas, but they are also carrying more pathogens than those collected from surrounding pasture (Noden et al., 2021). 

Keep grass around buildings short and bushes trimmed and off the ground.

For on animal tick control, fly tags can help control ear-associated ticks like Gulf Coast and spinose ear ticks. These are not effective for tick species that are on the body of the animal, like the American dog tick, which transmits Anaplasmosis. 

Sprays can be effective if they reach areas where ticks are attached, and tick populations are not resistant. As seen with flies, rates of pesticide resistance in ticks are also increasing. 

Common tick attachment sites include areas under the tail, in folds of skin, under the belly/udder areas and dewlap. 

Pour-on’s can also be effective but be aware that those containing macrocyclic lactone group chemicals will impact your dung beetle populations.

Protect yourself and your family while outdoors, too!

 Make sure you wear long pants tucked into socks and shirts with long sleeves, tucked into pants. Check yourself for ticks at the end of the day and remove any attached ticks as soon as possible. 

Dogs and cats should receive veterinarian prescribed tick control products. Be careful of ‘natural’ remedies found on the internet as these have not been tested for safety or efficacy.

 There has been a rise in garlic-based products for tick and flea control in dogs for sale on online retailers like Amazon. Garlic is not safe for dogs to consume and should not be used for flea and tick control.

Since the Administration's tariff announcements in April, US crude prices are six dollars below the average for the year.&nbsp; For the last week, prices are holding there within a two dollar range. By midday Tuesday, the expiring June contract on the NYMEX was fetching a few cents over $62 a barrel.&nbsp; Offers for July crude dipped below $62. London Brent was fetching $65 a barrel late Tuesday.

Domestic crude production has gone down about 200,000 barrels a day since the first of April. Output rose slightly last week, but remains below 13.4 million barrels a day for a second straight week. The four-week average and year-to-date total are both over 13.4 million. Both are up more than two percent from a year ago.

The rig counts in New Mexico and Texas were each down two according to the weekly tally from Baker Hughes. Losses were offset somewhat by gains in Wyoming and Ohio. The total of 576 active rigs is down one oil rig and one gas rig. The active list of the horizontal rigs is down two.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service is down three rigs or 13% from a week ago, nine percent lower than a month ago, and more than 35% lower than a year ago. Operators were moving in rotary tools Friday on a lease in Barton County.

Kansas Regulators approve just five new drilling permits, the smallest weekly tally in more than a decade.&nbsp; The Kansas Corporation Commission gave its okay to one new drilling location in Barton County among three in Western Kansas last week. That's 263 new drilling permits this year, down from 337 a year ago.

At 468 wells, this week's Completions report from Independent Oil and Gas Service is down 18 wells from a year ago. Out of 24 new completions this week, eleven are in the western half of the state, including two in Barton County.

Crude output in the number-three producing state increased in March, after dropping in each of the three preceding months. The North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources reports production of nearly 1.2 million barrels a day, up nearly 30-thousand daily barrels from the month before. Permits and completions are both rising according to DMR's monthly oil-and-gas report.

US Crude imports averaged 5.8 million barrels a day last week, down nearly a quarter million daily barrels. The four week average is down nearly 15% from a year ago. Crude exports are down 16% from a week ago to 3.3 million barrels a day.

The Energy Department took delivery on another half million barrels of crude for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The raises the total to just shy of 400 million barrels, down more than 200-million from the peak, but up 32 million barrels from a year ago.

Commercial inventories increased by four million barrels to just under 442 million. Stockpiles are six percent below the five-year average for this time of year.

Oil-by-rail in the US declined in April, amid otherwise broad gains on the nation's railroads. Of the 20 freight categories tracked by the Association of American Railroads, coal shipments led the way rising 23% compared to last April. Petroleum and Petroleum Products were among the seven categories that saw declines, dropping more than 3,000 carloads or 7.5% year-over-year.

The U.S. last week imposed sanctions on a shipping network sending millions of barrels of crude oil to China on behalf of Iran’s Armed Forces General Staff and a front company. According to the State Department, the sale of the oil reaped billions to fund attacks by the Houthi militant group on shipping.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We are incredibly grateful to Catholic Charities USA for this generous $25,000 grant, which will go directly toward helping the Grinnell community recover and rebuild,” said Megan Robl, executive director of Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas. “We’re also deeply thankful for the prayers and support of so many across the Salina Diocese. The road ahead is long, but we are committed to walking alongside this community for as long as we are needed—offering help, hope, and healing every step of the way.”

Later this week, Catholic Charities staff will return to Grinnell to assist families applying for financial assistance as the Red Cross opens the community’s resource coordination effort. This marks a critical step in connecting families with the funds and services they need to begin the rebuilding process.

Catholic Charities responds to Grinnell tornado, shares how public can help

The city of Hays is seeking public feedback on a proposed ordinance that would allow residents to raise backyard chickens within city limits.

A community survey is now available online, and residents are encouraged to participate to guide the city commission's decision-making process.

The survey can be accessed through the city of Hays website, HaysUSA.com, or directly via this link: <a href="https://form.jotform.com/251385024442047">HERE</a>.

Each resident can submit only one response, based on their location and device.

The proposal under consideration by the City Commission includes several limitations designed to mitigate potential concerns and maintain neighborhood quality of life.

Under the suggested guidelines, residents would be allowed to keep up to five hens, while roosters would not be permitted. Chickens would only be allowed on properties with permanent structures.

Additionally, chickens would need to be kept within a fully enclosed, secure coop, outdoor run, or other structure, which must be contained within a fenced rear or side yard.

The city does not plan to implement a registration system for backyard chickens, and enforcement of ordinance violations would be handled by the city’s community services officers. The discussion on backyard chickens in Hays was initiated by a local resident-led petition, which garnered nearly 250 verified signatures.

Following the petition, city staff researched how other Kansas cities manage backyard chickens.

Several municipalities comparable in size or larger than Hays, including Salina, Hutchinson, Derby, Newton and Garden City, allow backyard chickens with similar guidelines to those being proposed in Hays. Residents completing the survey will have an additional opportunity to submit further comments via an email provided upon submission.

The city of Hays strongly encourages residents to provide detailed feedback to assist in fully informing the commission's deliberations.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of United Way of Ellis County, I would like to announce that executive director, Erica Berges, will be stepping down from her position, with her last day being June 6.

Berges has been a vital part of United Way of Ellis County, leading the organization with dedication, compassion, and a strong commitment to improving the lives of individuals and families in our community.

During her tenure, she played a key role in advancing our mission, strengthening partnerships, and expanding outreach and services.

The board of directors is actively developing a transition plan to ensure continued stability and forward momentum for the organization during this period of change.

GOVE COUNTY —The preliminary damage survey on the tornado in Grinnell confirms that at least anEF2 tornado moved through the community Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service in Goodland. The survey team hopes to complete the survey by Tuesday evening.&nbsp;

The storm damaged homes and caused significant damage to both the electric and gas systems in the community.   There were no injuries reported.

NWS confirms strength of tornado that struck Grinnell

Alicia Hammeke Knight has been named the incoming assistant principal of Holy Family Elementary School for the 2025-2026 school year.

Knight has been a Holy Family Elementary parent for five years and is an alumnus of Holy Family Elementary and Thomas Moore Prep-Marian, making her familiar with Catholic values.

"In education, we're looking at whole people, especially when it comes to our faith and Catholic-based school," Knight said. "I'm not just looking at a student academically. We're trying to develop these children as a whole being."

Knight graduated from TMP in 2009 and received her bachelor's degree in elementary education with a minor in special education from Fort Hays State University in 2014.&nbsp;

Knight earned her English for speakers of other languages endorsement and taught in Gardner from 2014 to 2017. She returned to Hays and began teaching fourth and fifth grade at O'Loughlin Elementary School in 2017.

"I've said it all along, Hays has the best schools, we have such a beautiful town, and O'Loughlin is wonderful... it'll be hard to leave," Knight said.

She earned her master’s degree in education administration from Fort Hays State University in 2023 and is eager to step into her new role at Holy Family Elementary.

Knight said she plans to work closely with Principal Mandy Meagher and uphold the school’s Catholic mission. She added she greatly admires her father, Curtis Hammeke, who was <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/d52a81f5-a671-43dc-91e3-b8f9dc7e633b">recently appointed as the new president of Hays Catholic Schools</a>.

"I really look up to him and see a lot of positive qualities he has, which was part of my inspiration," she said.

HaysMed recognized Emma Dinkel, patient care technician in the progressive care unit, as the very first recipient of the BEE Award. This honor was presented during National Hospital Week.

Just as a daisy depends on the bee to thrive, our nurses rely on the dedication and teamwork of non-nursing health care professionals to provide exceptional patient care.

To recognize this vital collaboration, HaysMed created the Being Excellent Everyday (BEE) Award, honoring outstanding contributions from non-nursing team members.

Dinkel was nominated by a patient’s family member, who shared:

“I got to know Emma and was very impressed with her work ethic. Emma is going to make a wonderful nurse. I loved her kindness and strong character. Emma is a rising star—her light shines from her to others. Her face says it all. She is a very kind and caring young person with a bright future. Good luck.”

Dinkel’s supervisor, Jana Zeller, manager of professional development, said, "Emma is one of the hardest-working, most compassionate people I know. When Emma shows up for work, she is ready to go. 

"She is always looking at ways we can improve and shares these with me regularly. Emma's patients, whom she cares for as a PCT, always have wonderful things to say about her and the care she provides. Emma's coworkers also know that when Emma is working, she is on the move from start to finish, taking the very best care of everyone on the Progressive Care Unit."
