The winter of 2019-2020 was not as harsh as the previous winter, but there were still conditions that resulted in negative impacts on cattle, particularly calves. One indication of the winter weather impacts was the number of requests for Mesonet data to document losses under the Livestock Indemnity Program.

The switch from cool spring conditions to very warm temperatures brings up the other side of stress to cattle. A comprehensive tool on the weather impacts should prove useful for future events. Besides cold weather stress, this tool also helps assess the response to excessive heat and humidity.

Actual animal response to temperature stress will be dependent on a number of factors not accounted for in the index. Those include, but are not limited to: age, hair coat (winter vs summer; wet vs dry, health, body condition, micro-environment, and acclimatization.

Understanding the Comfort Index

Building on the Comprehensive Comfort Index, produced at University of Nebraska, this tool illustrates the impact of both extremes of hot and cold. The index is unique in that it includes, in addition to air temperature and relative humidity, effects of wind speed and solar radiation. Development and validation of the index used data from beef and dairy cattle. The map indicates where current conditions fit on the scale.&nbsp;

On the “About” page, there is a description of the values on the scale and their potential impact. There is also a link to the publications used to produce the page. For more information on navigating this resource, users can select a page tour from the main animal comfort page located at the top of the featured map.

A particularly useful resource is the chart feature. This allows you to monitor how conditions have fluctuated over the past week.&nbsp; Since stress impacts can be cumulative, having this feature allows producers to evaluate management requirements.

BOOR: Cattle comfort index

It’s been around 100 days since the covid-19 pandemic officially arrived in Kansas, bringing fears both physical and economic to every corner of the state. What have we learned? On the positive side, we know that the dramatic precautions of closing businesses and schools likely made a big difference: the number of Kansas’s coronavirus-related deaths and active cases are less than many were worryingly predicting back in mid-March. But on the negative side, we also know that our elected leaders did not fully rise to meet the divisiveness and confusion which the pandemic brought with it. Instead, the past three months saw many in Topeka, for different reasons, either acquiescing to a distrust in the democratic process–or in some unfortunate cases, actively promoting it. Consider Gov. Laura Kelly. She initially took dramatic action to prevent the spread of possible sources of contagion. Her regular communications with voters and legislators, patient commitment to scientific evidence, and carefully designed re-opening plans received wide praise. But Kelly also failed to engage the conspiratorial drumbeats that have grown deafening in the more rural parts of the state, where case numbers are low. Her effort to ensure that restrictions on public gatherings applied to churches was a political backfire. Rather than working to encourage the legislature to continue to meet remotely and move forward, she watched as some legislators abandoned all pretense of governing, committing themselves solely to limiting her power. After vetoing a clumsy effort by the Republican-led state legislature to restrict her authority, Kelly called an emergency session and, without debate, agreed to a compromise that left public health decisions almost solely in the hands of local county commissions. Now she is looking at the varied trajectories of cases across the state (the numbers from Sedgwick County are particularly worrisome), watching some of her good work become undone. Kelly’s failure to challenge the panicked distrust in legislative debate that often characterized Topeka this spring was bad; Kansas State Senate President Susan Wagle’s embrace of it, though, was worse. Determined to make the jump from the legislature to the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, Wagle decided that rallying pro-life voters, through putting an anti-abortion amendment to the state constitution on the August primary ballot, was her ticket. She kept that determination in front of everything else, preventing productive debate not just over Medicaid expansion but a dozen other issues as well, as the pandemic broke and raged through the state.&nbsp; In the end, this encouraged unwillingness of enough of our legislators to demand real discussion and proper votes in the face of the coronavirus threat backfired, killing Wagle’s hopes for the proposed amendment. Worse, it left the state of Kansas without a clear path forward. Will the covid numbers we are currently seeing require yet another emergency clash between the governor and the legislature? If so, how might that one go, given the precedent which was set this spring? None of Kansas’s legislators could have anticipated the challenging responsibilities the pandemic has forced upon them. Still, the responsibilities are theirs; such is our representative system. We can only hope the irresponsible lessons of this spring will be forgotten in the summer to come. Andrea M. Legleiter looked for a long time and at a lot of options when considering a master’s program in Web development. No matter what state she wound up living in, the sense of belonging and familiarity kept drawing Legleiter back to Fort Hays State University and the city where she attended high school.&nbsp; Now a two-time FHSU graduate, Legleiter would put her capstone research project up against graduates from universities well known for Web development.&nbsp; Her project in the research methods class for her master’s degree, which focused on commonly used interface icons, will be published in an international conference this summer. Legleiter and her adjunct professor, Dr. Nicholas Caporusso, are working on follow-up research for the project, which features Font Awesome’s library.&nbsp; Font Awesome is a font and icon toolkit used by website designers and developers instead of traditional, old-image icons.&nbsp;Its icon set is known as one of the most popular professionally designed open-source sets available.&nbsp; Fueled by the success of her final project, Legleiter – a 1999 graduate of Hays High School – completed her master’s program online while always on the move. She lived in three different states along the East Coast in a single year with her significant other, Shawn, and their son, Rhys.&nbsp; A 2003 Fort Hays State graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in communication, Legleiter recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA while earning earned her Master of Professional Studies with an emphasis in Web and mobile application development. This spring, she won the Dr. Bob Meier Outstanding Graduate Research Award at FHSU, which recognizes student excellence for their thoughtfulness, hard work and determination throughout their research projects and time at FHSU.&nbsp; A culminating point of the research project for Legleiter was a Zoom meeting with Font Awesome’s CEO, Dave Gandy, who was impressed with Legleiter’s research and data collection tool and promoted it on Font Awesome’s social media accounts.&nbsp; While Font Awesome is a small company in terms of employees, it is used by millions of websites, Dr. Caporusso said.&nbsp; Legleiter and Dr. Caporusso will continue gathering data for the project and perform more in-depth analysis to help the company improve on how the icons are designed and perceived by users of different ages and education levels.&nbsp; While Dr. Caporusso collaborates on projects like Legleiter’s, he gave her all the credit for the success of the Font Awesome project.&nbsp; “It was her idea, and I just helped her refine it and take to the next level,” Caporusso said. “She showed a lot of perseverance and made it happen.”&nbsp; Legleiter came up with her research idea when she was conducting some usability tests in another class early on in her master’s program. She was evaluating a website that incorporated a lot of icons in the user interface, and she began to wonder to what extent the common user understands the meaning behind the icons that facilitate interactions.&nbsp; “It was a fun project,” she said. “Dr. Caporusso saw that I had ideas and the willingness to go a step beyond.”&nbsp; Legleiter’s project focused on discovering to what extent icons have acquired universal meaning and determining the level of ambiguity of each icon, which can degrade their usability.&nbsp; She is excited about continuing work on the project and is thankful that she chose her alma mater to pursue another degree.&nbsp; “This program taught me the skills that were necessary as I look to transition to a career in Web and mobile application development,” Legleiter said. “It combined practical application of various coding languages and a theoretical research component that was missing with other programs I was looking at. The program provided a high level of education and a rewarding experience all around.”

Three-day weather outlook

June 19 marks a turning point in American history.

It is <a href="https://www.juneteenth.com/history.htm" target="_blank">Juneteenth</a>, the holiday that celebrates the end of slavery nationwide.

We are at another turning point in our nation’s history, and people 
of good faith want to be part of that change. This week, the Freedom 
Forum’s Power Shift Project hosted a webinar titled Do You Qualify As An
 Ally? (Especially Now). Nearly 400 people, most of them journalists, 
tuned in.

So are polls. <a href="https://www.monmouth.edu/polling-institute/documents/monmouthpoll_us_060220.pdf/" target="_blank">Monmouth University</a>
 reported a robust, remarkable jump in the number of people agreeing 
that racism and ethnic discrimination is a big problem in the United 
States. From 51 percent five years ago, to 76 percent (including 71 
percent of whites) today.

People want to change systems that are inherently biased.

But they also know they have to change themselves, too.

They want to take responsibility for being “a trusted force for good,” which is how The Power Shift Project describes allies.

People want to do the right thing, the right way.

From the very first Power Shift Summit in 2018, launched in the wake 
of the #MeToo scandals in media, we learned that harassment and 
discrimination are inseparable. So, as we tackled the cultural change 
needed to produce equitable workplaces for women, we didn’t focus on 
their challenges alone.

We took on marginalization, discrimination, harassment and bias affecting all who are underrepresented in journalism.

We listened to expert voices, learned from research and bore witness to open wounds.

But even as we developed a curriculum to upgrade workplace cultures, 
we heard repeatedly from people who wanted to do more – as individuals.

That’s why we launched “Do You Qualify as an Ally?” a year ago.

Before COVID-19 and its disproportionate effect on women and people of color.

Before Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd and Rayshard Brooks lost their lives.

Before marches that filled our streets and our screens with clarion calls for change.

We knew it was time to update our Ally teaching; to build on what we started and match this moment.

And so do people of good will – people who are more ready than ever to learn.

The hundreds who joined us took in 10 (of many) ways to qualify as an ally, with practical of examples of each point:

And we told them that most of all, to do all of those things without expectation of credit or profit.

Be like the university professor who teaches his students how 
unconscious bias causes female professors to get lower evaluations from 
students – on the week they turn in those evaluations.

Be like the TV station group leadership team that sent a memo to 
employees, stating that as a journalism organization, they’ve 
traditionally refrained from commenting on political issues – but that 
racism isn’t political and employees have the right to speak out against
 it.

Be like the young NFL social media producer who “<a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl-video-roger-goodell-racism-black-lives-matter-players-employees-110927703.html" target="_blank">went rogue,”</a> working behind the scenes with players to create their “Black Lives Matter” video, calling for change in the NFL.

Be like the media organizations that monitor their own progress on 
diversity – or lack of it, who create databases of diverse sources – and
 <a href="https://sources.npr.org/" target="_blank">share them</a>.

Be like the newsrooms that listened to the <a href="https://www.nabj.org/news/512370/NABJ-Statement-on-Capitalizing-Black-and-Other-Racial-Identifiers.htm" target="_blank">National Association of Black journalists</a>, tossed out the AP Stylebook guidance, and have turned “black Americans” into “Black Americans” out of respect.

That’s a taste of what those 395 participants learned about for one 
hour on a Monday afternoon, on their journey to qualify as allies.

we heard repeatedly from people who wanted to do more – as individuals.That’s why we launched “Do You Qualify as an Ally?” a year ago.Before COVID-19 and its disproportionate effect on women and people of color.Before Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd and Rayshard Brooks lost their lives.Before marches that filled our streets and our screens with clarion calls for change.We knew it was time to update our Ally teaching; to build on what we started and match this moment.The news demands it.And so do people of good will – people who are more ready than ever to learn.The hundreds who joined us took in 10 (of many) ways to qualify as an ally, with practical of examples of each point:<ol>
 <li>Understand that power affects our perspectives.</li><li>Recognize the realities and risks of unconscious bias.</li><li>Be a learner, but don’t expect anyone is obligated to be your teacher.</li><li>Recognize, relieve and reward the “invisible work” done by underrepresented employees.</li><li>Understand the meaning and impact of microaggressions.</li><li>Find a voice for courageous conversations.</li><li>Challenge systems, traditions, practices and assumptions that foster inequity.</li><li>Measure what matters.</li><li>Be more than a mentor; be a sponsor.</li><li>Be more than an ally; be an amplifier, an accomplice, an advocate and an ally to other allies when they step up.</li>
 </ol>And we told them that most of all, to do all of those things without expectation of credit or profit.Be like the university professor who teaches his students how 
unconscious bias causes female professors to get lower evaluations from 
students – on the week they turn in those evaluations.Be like the TV station group leadership team that sent a memo to 
employees, stating that as a journalism organization, they’ve 
traditionally refrained from commenting on political issues – but that 
racism isn’t political and employees have the right to speak out against
 it.Be like the young NFL social media producer who “<a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl-video-roger-goodell-racism-black-lives-matter-players-employees-110927703.html" target="_blank">went rogue,”</a> working behind the scenes with players to create their “Black Lives Matter” video, calling for change in the NFL.Be like the media organizations that monitor their own progress on 
diversity – or lack of it, who create databases of diverse sources – and
 <a href="https://sources.npr.org/" target="_blank">share them</a>.Be like the newsrooms that listened to the <a href="https://www.nabj.org/news/512370/NABJ-Statement-on-Capitalizing-Black-and-Other-Racial-Identifiers.htm" target="_blank">National Association of Black journalists</a>, tossed out the AP Stylebook guidance, and have turned “black Americans” into “Black Americans” out of respect.That’s a taste of what those 395 participants learned about for one

ELLIS COUNTY— Two people were injured in an accident just after 11a.m. Thursday in Ellis County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Peterbilt semi driven by&nbsp; &nbsp;Frank Andrew Perkins II, 30, Cordell, OK., was southbound on the U.S. 183 Bypass in Hays.

The semi struck a 2019 Nissan Rogue driven by Jasmine Melia Bradley, 24, Junction City, was southbound on the Bypass and the driver attempted to make a u-turn in front of the semi at 41st Street.

Bradley and a passenger, Michael L. Fisher, 60, Cleveland, MO, were transported to Hays Medical Center and later&nbsp;flown to Via Christi in Wichita.

Perkins and a passenger in the semi were not injured.&nbsp; All four were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

COVID-19 introduced a new way of life for many, but for Steve Hudman, the new vice president of NCK Tech Hays Campus, it was the start of a truly new experience. Hudman literally started his new position on the Hays campus just days after the college closed for COVID-19.&nbsp;

Steve Hudman has over 13 years’ experience in higher education in a variety of leadership and management roles.&nbsp; He served as the Dean of Student Affairs and Chief Student Affairs Officer for Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas, and led the college through the creation and implementation of an aggressive strategic plan.&nbsp; He was instrumental in the continued accreditation from the Southern Association of College and Schools Commission on Colleges. Other key areas of involvement included the celebration of Angelina College’s 50th Anniversary celebration; developed strong student-centered process increasing access and enrollment efficiency for all student population; support design and construction projects including the Campus Police Department, one-stop student services center, on-campus coffee shop and commons area. Hudman implemented a new student management system and website, design and development of the college mobile app and spearheaded the addition of the NJCAA sanctioned men’s and women’s soccer program.

Prior to Angelina College, Hudman served as the Dean of Student Life and Athletic Director for Cisco College in Cisco, Texas. He was responsible for improving overall student experience on both campuses in Cisco and Abilene, Texas. Responsibilities at Cisco College included improving residence life by managing four residence hall renovation projects; development of a student union building improvement project; increasing student satisfaction with cafeteria services; managed an update in the on-campus recreation facilities; developed a progressive student judicial policy and consistently held student retention rates well above the national 2-year institutional average.

Hudman received his bachelor’s degree from Angelo State University and a master’s degree from Hardin-Simmons University. He is a West Texas native and has been married to his wife, Kelly for twenty-five years. Hudman and his wife have four children ages 13, 18, 20 and 23. He participates in civic boards and commissions including the Lufkin Convention and Visitors Bureau, Angelina Beautiful Clean, Lufkin Rotary and the City of Cisco City Council. Hardman and his family are active in youth coaching, local sporting events, fine arts and other extra-curricular events in support of the family and community.

As the next vice president of NCK Tech Hays Campus, Hudman is excited about the challenges and opportunity working with the students, faculty and staff and collaboration with the Hays community and NCK Tech service area.

NCK Tech announces Hays campus vice president

The Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) on Thursday approved tuition rates for each of the six state universities in Kansas for the 2020-2021 academic year, according to a media release.

Kansas State University and the University of Kansas held tuition flat for resident and non-resident undergraduate and graduate students. At Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, Pittsburg State University and Wichita State University, resident undergraduate tuition increases range from $62 to $75 a semester.

“Our institutions are facing incredibly difficult choices as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said KBOR Chair Shane Bangerter. “In the face of revenue losses, increased costs and continued uncertainty, universities made great efforts to ensure that students do not bear the cost. As a result, we were able hold tuition flat or keep increases as low as possible.”

In 2019, state universities held tuition flat thanks in part to a $34 million increase in state funding, in combination with efforts by institutions to find efficiencies. In 2020, the Board requested $50 million in additional funding for state universities and received $11.9 million, which will be rescinded via a budget allotment later this month, as part of a $26.3 million funding swap of federal CARES Act funding applied to the state universities.

One of the primary responsibilities of the Board of Regents, as defined in state law, is to set tuition and fees at state universities. The tuition proposals that were approved by the Board today may be accessed through the June 2020 agenda

Kansas Board of Regents approves tuition increase for FHSU

Fueled by a wave of concerned citizens and social media
posts, the Ellis County Commission is set to move forward with renaming Noose
Road. 

The roughly 5-mile stretch of road that extends west of
Hays from 12th Street drew the ire of several residents recently and, at Monday’s meeting, all three commissioners agreed to
move forward with the name change. 

The discussion was sparked last week on social media by Hays
attorney Greg Schwartz who called for the name change in light of the current
social unrest following the death of Minnesota man while in police custody.

One of the most prominent voices in the online conversation,
that has well over 100 comments, was Ellis County Commissioner Dustin Roths.

At Monday’s commission meeting, Roths said he initially did
not know the story behind the naming of Noose Road, which was first approved in
1989 and approved a second time in 1990.

“My initial thought was, it was insensitive,” Roths said.

The road purportedly got its name because of its
connection to Hangman’s Bridge. According to a paper from James N. Leiker at
the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, three black soldiers were hanged from
the bridge after they allegedly killed a Union Pacific watchman. The three were
arrested but, before they were put on trial, a mob took the men from the jail and
hanged them from the bridge. A fourth man was also hanged from the bridge
nearly two years later.

Three people addressed the commission at Monday’s meeting — two in favor of the name change and one opposing it.

Paul Brull, spoke on behalf of his grandfather Randy Brull,
who was unable to attend the meeting.

“I personally think that when it comes to the issue of Noose
Road, it’s incredibly important that the name be changed,” Brull said. “It's incredibly important that we take steps to try and make
our community better. And if that is changing the name on a road, that’s incredibly important to do.”

Gail Palmberg lives on Noose Road and said did not agree with
the name being changed.

“(A) noose is a rope with a knot in it. What you do with
it, that’s your choice,” Palmberg said. “Just changing the name of a road won’t
change history.”

Palmberg said, despite claims by others, changing address will
be complicated. According to Public Works Director Bill Ring, there are
approximately 29 homes, one business, one cemetery and one commercial building
that would be impacted by the name change.

Roths echoed Brull’s sentiment that people
shouldn’t feel unwelcome in Ellis County.

“We should not forget history,” Roths said, “because we
don’t want that kind of history to ever repeat itself. But I never want anyone
to feel unwelcome in Ellis County Kansas.”

Commissioner Dean Haselhorst said he had a conversation with
an African-American friend of his from New York about the situation. According
to Haselhorst, his friend told him he would not be bothered by the name.

After discussing several name options, the commission all
agreed to change the name of the road to Rome Avenue.

Rome was the first settlement in Ellis County but was
short-lived and now only a stone marker shows its former location. 

The commission will have to approve a resolution to make the
change offical.

Hays' first motorized fire truck is home permanently thanks to local business owner

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5ecfc2fdebfb13423b2656cc">Only one week ago, the fate of Hays’s first motorized fire truck was in question. Fundraising had stalled and it looked as if the truck may go to a private collection far away from Hays.</a>

But after attention was brought to the&nbsp;possibility&nbsp;of the sale of the truck to someone outside of the area, a&nbsp;Hays&nbsp;business&nbsp;owner decided he could not let that happen.&nbsp;

“It had to come back,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;John Dreiling&nbsp;owner of&nbsp;Dreiling Field Service. “It had to come back to the city of Hays, and we have to figure out how to get it back to the&nbsp;museum.”&nbsp;

Brad Corley, owner of the truck before the purchase, had hoped the truck&nbsp;would&nbsp;return to Hays, and had held onto it&nbsp;for years&nbsp;as the local Firefighters&nbsp;Relief&nbsp;Organization&nbsp;worked to find funding to purchase the truck and for display in their&nbsp;museum&nbsp;on the grounds of the Ellis County Historical Society.&nbsp;

But Corley recently listed the truck for sale in the area, with the hope of generating local interest in purchasing the truck.&nbsp;

“That’s the proudest thing I can do for the truck,” Corley said. “I enjoyed it, I enjoyed working on it ... but I wanted it to be here, because it is your history.”&nbsp;

FRA President&nbsp;Tim&nbsp;Detrixhe was&nbsp;grateful Dreiling made the&nbsp;decision&nbsp;to purchase the truck and get it back to Hays.&nbsp;

“It’s incredible what (Dreiling) just did for the town, the firefighters, the people that are in one way or another connected to that truck,”&nbsp;Detrixhe said. “Who knows,&nbsp;there might be a person in town that is still able to be here because that truck was there.”&nbsp;

When the truck rolled up to Dreiling’s shop Thursday morning, dozens of retired firefighters,&nbsp;family and others gathered to see it.&nbsp;

“To see all of the retired guys showing up,”&nbsp;Detrixhe&nbsp;said, “this means a lot.”&nbsp;

Along with the truck came history in the&nbsp;form of paperwork and items&nbsp;related&nbsp;to the truck, items Corley was happy to share with the crowd Thursday morning.&nbsp;

“I feel good,” Corley said. “I’m excited that the truck’s coming back home.”&nbsp;

As the&nbsp;original&nbsp;purchase date of the truck approaches 100 years ago, the timing almost seems&nbsp;serendipitous.&nbsp;

“One hundred years full circle comes around, that’s no small&nbsp;feat,”&nbsp;Detrixhe&nbsp;said.&nbsp;“It’s kind of&nbsp;humbling.”&nbsp;

Ultimately, the FRA hopes to purchase the truck from Dreiling to be put into an expanded&nbsp;museum&nbsp;on the grounds of the Ellis County&nbsp;Historical&nbsp;Society.&nbsp;

“There is a lot of work that needs to be done,”&nbsp;Detrixhe&nbsp;said. “His&nbsp;generosity&nbsp;getting it back here to Hays and making sure that it stays here is&nbsp;unparalleled.”&nbsp;

He said the&nbsp;museum&nbsp;can only&nbsp;display&nbsp;two trucks&nbsp;at a time so if they put the truck in there now, it would not be able to be properly displayed. The museum is home to the second and third motorized trucks purchased by Hays.

“We need to come up with a plan and execute it,”&nbsp;Detrixhe&nbsp;said.&nbsp;“Now with this support and momentum, I think that it’s something&nbsp;feasible.”&nbsp;

After working under the impression any action on the truck may be down the road, retired&nbsp;Hays&nbsp;Fire&nbsp;Chief&nbsp;Roger Rife&nbsp;was surprised how quickly the truck made its way back.&nbsp;

"Right&nbsp;now, it’s pretty&nbsp;scary,” Rife said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He said he&nbsp;received&nbsp;numerous calls after&nbsp;attention was generated by Corley’s&nbsp;advertisement&nbsp;to sell the truck, but the call from Corley was the best outcome he could have hoped for.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“All of our dreams&nbsp;came&nbsp;true,” Rife said. “John is really a saviour for us right now. We didn’t have the funding. We had worked with&nbsp;different&nbsp;entities&nbsp;to try to get some funding. ... But thanks to John, here it is.”&nbsp;

He said he has found a partner to help secure grant writers&nbsp;and hopes funding will be secured to ultimately purchase the truck from&nbsp;Dreiling&nbsp;and have the truck displayed&nbsp;permanently&nbsp;in the&nbsp;museum.&nbsp;

“It's&nbsp;a great tool to teach the community fire safety and your history and the troubles and the strife that they had to go through in those days,”&nbsp;Corley said.&nbsp;“It’s a jewel that you have. Lots of times you don’t have that anymore. Buildings go, time changes, but to get something that you can get back is incredible.”&nbsp;

Dreiling said he had seen the truck during&nbsp;its&nbsp;visit to Hays in 2016 and knew&nbsp;retired&nbsp;Ellis County&nbsp;Fire Department Chief&nbsp;Richard&nbsp;Schubert,&nbsp;who searched for the truck for years prior to his death in 2018.&nbsp;

He called&nbsp;Corley&nbsp;after he heard they had struggles&nbsp;securing&nbsp;funding to purchase the truck.&nbsp;

“After he told me the price, I said 'sold,' ”&nbsp;Dreiling said.&nbsp;“The main concern was to get it back to Hays, Kansas, because at some point they were going to lose it if they didn’t get it.”&nbsp;

While he is happy to own the truck for the time being,&nbsp;ultimately,&nbsp;he hopes it will end up in the museum.&nbsp;

“Our goal is to get it down to the&nbsp;museum, and let the city of Hays own it,”&nbsp;Dreiling said.&nbsp;

He also said knowing&nbsp;Schubert&nbsp;and&nbsp;his wife, Ruth, creating&nbsp;some personal history with the truck and heard&nbsp;about&nbsp;it&nbsp;for years&nbsp;and knew of the legacy to the city.&nbsp;

While bringing the truck to Hays was exciting for Dreiling, all of the&nbsp;research and documentation such as service manuals and&nbsp;attachments&nbsp;sweetened&nbsp;the deal.&nbsp;

“I'm&nbsp;a history buff, I like&nbsp;original&nbsp;and stock things,” he said. “This&nbsp;thing has so much information. It’s&nbsp;amazing&nbsp;what Brad did.”&nbsp;

The&nbsp;generosity&nbsp;of Corley offering to bring the truck to Hays quickly also pushed the deal forward quickly.&nbsp;

“It happened quick, because the same day Brad said I will bring it to you,”&nbsp;Dreiling said.&nbsp;“He brought it here out of his own goodwill to us.”&nbsp;

During the drop off, Corley&nbsp;also reaffirmed his pledge to donate $5,000 to the firefighters museum in the name of Schubert.&nbsp;

“You don’t find people like that anymore,”&nbsp;Dreiling said.&nbsp;

He also said he is not someone to dwell on decisions like this one.&nbsp;

“I’m a spur of the moment guy,” he said. “The time to buy something is when you see it.”&nbsp;

But he also remains&nbsp;hopeful&nbsp;efforts will continue to get the truck into the hands of the FRA.&nbsp;

“Our goal at this point is to get it back to the&nbsp;museum&nbsp;and let the museum own it,”&nbsp;Dreiling&nbsp;said. “If it comes down to it and that doesn’t happen...they have full&nbsp;accessibility&nbsp;to it anytime. This is why it's back here.”&nbsp;

Either&nbsp;way, he&nbsp;said the truck&nbsp;won't&nbsp;leave Hays.&nbsp;

And based on the response already, he&nbsp;believes&nbsp;the FRA will be able to make it happen&nbsp;as Rife and&nbsp;Detrixhe&nbsp;work to find ways to raise funds to bring the truck to the museum.&nbsp;

He said he guessed he had already had 200 phones calls from people interested in the truck.&nbsp;

In the&nbsp;meantime,&nbsp;he plans to show the truck in the&nbsp;Thunder on the Plains car show, as well as&nbsp;drive&nbsp;the&nbsp;truck in the&nbsp;Fourth&nbsp;of July parade.&nbsp;

“It needs to be taken out so people can see it,&nbsp;it needs to be enjoyed,”&nbsp;Dreiling said.&nbsp;

Fundraising had stalled and it looked as if the truck may go to a private collection far away from Hays.</a>But after attention was brought to the&nbsp;possibility&nbsp;of the sale of the truck to someone outside of the area, a&nbsp;Hays&nbsp;business&nbsp;owner decided he could not let that happen.&nbsp;“It had to come back,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;John Dreiling&nbsp;owner of&nbsp;Dreiling Field Service. “It had to come back to the city of Hays, and we have to figure out how to get it back to the&nbsp;museum.”&nbsp;Brad Corley, owner of the truck before the purchase, had hoped the truck&nbsp;would&nbsp;return to Hays, and had held onto it&nbsp;for years&nbsp;as the local Firefighters&nbsp;Relief&nbsp;Organization&nbsp;worked to find funding to purchase the truck and for display in their&nbsp;museum&nbsp;on the grounds of the Ellis County Historical Society.&nbsp;But Corley recently listed the truck for sale in the area, with the hope of generating local interest in purchasing the truck.&nbsp;<figure>

Hays No. 1 returns home thanks to local business owner

After being closed to visitors since March 24, the Humane Society of the High Plains has reopened to the public and has big upgrades planned for the summer.

"We were doing appointments for a couple of months, in the beginning, we weren't allowing any visitors, and then by appointment, but now we are fully open our regular hours," Betty Hansen, manager of the Virginia Miller Animal Shelter.

The shelter's regular hours are Tuesday through Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Since reopening, the shelter has been busy, leaving only one dog currently up for adoption.

"We have had a lot of people visit now that we are open," Hansen said. "We've had some great adoptions in this past seven to 10 days."

With the adoptions, the shelter has space for dogs, but remain full for cats.

"If you are needing to place a dog this is probably the best time to do it," Hansen said.

They have a waiting list to surrender cats and kittens, even though they have had some adoptions.

Visitors to the shelter will not see any special precautions inside the shelter, but she said they are conscious of how many people are in the building and disinfecting the facility regularly.

"They have been coming in small groups, so it's all been working out pretty well,"&nbsp;Hasen said.

While the society settles back into the normal routine, it is also preparing for big changes on the grounds.

"We are going to put in a full play yard in the back for the dogs," Hansen said. "We have always had trouble since this building was built keeping grass in the back because the dogs are always on it."

They researched options for the grass and decided a turf-like artificial grass designed for dogs would work best.

"That will be covering the whole back yard," Hansen said. "It's very easy to clean and should last a long time."

They will also construct a large shade structure, some baby pools and large dog playset.

"It's something to maybe give them a little more exercise and something to do when they are out in the yard," Hansen said.

Construction is set to begin after the Fourth of July holiday.

"We are really looking forward to that," Hansen said.
