Voters Organized to Elect Farm Bureau Friends, also known as VOTE FBF, scored perfect marks in federal races during the primary earlier this month. Three endorsements, three wins, three candidates who understand agriculture moving on to November’s general election.

Dr. Roger Marshall came out on top of a competitive and crowded field to win the GOP nomination to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Sen. Pat Robert’s retirement.

Tracey Mann, who is the odds on favorite to take over Marshall’s seat in the U.S. House, secured the Republican nomination in the race to represent the Big First. And Jake LaTurner upset an incumbent in his bid for the second congressional district.

This hattrick of victories isn’t an aberration for VOTE FBF, which has seen a success rate topping 90 percent since its inception nearly three decades ago. The secret to the success? A grassroots process that ensures endorsements come from the bottom up, rather than the top down.

As a relatively new face at Kansas Farm Bureau, this was my first time seeing the process unfold up close. Each of the state’s 105 counties had the opportunity to hear from candidates and make recommendations to the VOTE FBF board, which pooled the feedback from counties to make its endorsements.

The decisions are political, but they’re not partisan. The goal isn’t to elect candidates our members will always agree with, its mission is simply to elect ones who understand and value the work Kansas farmers and ranchers do each and every day.

Of course, despite eschewing partisanship, it wouldn’t be politics without a few snide remarks as seen on KFB’s Facebook page. Throughout the primary process I learned Kansas Farm Bureau “doesn’t represent real farmers,” and our endorsed candidates “weren’t real conservatives,” “were too conservative” or some variation in the runup to the election.

At its core, VOTE FBF is successful because of its pragmatism. Counties and the VOTE FBF board don’t feel the need to make endorsements just for the heck of it. If no candidate in a race has earned the confidence of members or there’s more than one acceptable challenger, making no endorsement is an option.

In short, securing a Kansas Farm Bureau endorsement is similar to a candidate securing an individual’s vote. And the endorsement carries value beyond any possible monetary contribution VOTE FBF may decide to make.

Contrary to what some believe about Kansas Farm Bureau not representing “real farmers (and ranchers),” we’re the state’s largest general farm organization. The grassroots process employed by VOTE FBF has been part of the organization for more than 100 years, and it’s representative of not only our members, but the view of Kansans at large as the recent election results show.

While those results are still fresh, they’re also only the halfway point for this cycle. Advance voting in person and by mail begins Oct. 14 and Election Day is Nov. 3. If you turn 18 before then or sat out the primary because you weren’t registered, you have until Oct. 13 to do so.

Even if we don’t see eye-to-eye on every issue, I encourage you to cast an informed vote for the candidate of your choice. Because the leadership of our country, state and counties relies on the same grassroots support Kansas Farm Bureau uses in all its decision making.

Three-day weather outlook

Officers responding to a suspicious person call early Sunday morning in Hays were treated to an unusual sight.

At 4:52 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to a report of a man yelling from the roof of the fire department station at 1507 Main, according to Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler.

The reporting party said the man did not appear to be wearing a shirt, but when officers arrived they found he was missing more than just a shirt.

When officers made contact with the reportedly highly intoxicated suspect on the roof, they found he was sitting in the middle of the roof naked, Scheibler said.

He was, however, covered in black tar residue from the roof.

The suspect was identified as Zakai Hunter Ingdalson, 21, Kinsley.

Upon investigation, officers found a roof vent cap had been torn off, damaging the seal.

Damages were estimated under $500, according to Scheibler.

Ingdalson was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and criminal trespass.

The Ellis County Commission approved a $26.5 million budget Monday night with a flat tax rate.

The county mill levy will remain at&nbsp; 36.91 mills.&nbsp;

Darin Myers, who served as interim county administrator, said at the commission direction, the county did not increase expenditures.

The county passed two sales tax questions earlier this year. One included a quarter-cent sales tax for EMS and the other was a quarter0cent sales tax to benefit the general fund. The sales taxes will go into effect Oct. 1.

"I'm glad we had the sales tax passed," Commission Chairman Butch Schlyer said. "It made our work here much easier."&nbsp;

Commissioner Dustin Roths said, "I appreciate the community going to bat and appreciating the way that we spend money in Ellis County because that is their hard-earned cash we are putting to work for them."

The rural fire district mill levy increased from 3.73 mills to 4.27 mills to compensate for the decline in oil and gas revenues. The county levied the maximum allowed without taking a vote on the tax increase, which will result in revenue of $569,140.

This rural fire district does not include residents of Hays, Ellis, Victoria or Schoenchen.&nbsp;

Myers said the county hopes to be able increase reserves. The county budgeted $2.08 million for the reserve fund this year. After 2021, the county hopes to have about $4 million in reserves. The county's goal is to have about 35 percent of budget in reserves or about $5.2 million.

The commission will be making a decision in the next month on employee health insurance. The county is considering leaving the state system for a Blue Cross Blue Shield plan administered by Freedom Claims Management. The county estimates it could save as much as $300,000 next year by going to the new health plan.

This is considering cost-sharing with employees, and some of those savings will be passed on to employees.

The commission also approved a bid for $5.4 million in bonds for road and bridge improvements. The bonds will be paid back at about $550,000 per year over 10 years.&nbsp;

The county received an AA- rating for the bonds, which is very favorable, said financial advisor Larry Kleeman with Ranson Financial Group LLC. The low bid on the bonds was from Country Club Bank with an interest rate of .6467 percent, when you take into account a premium the bank will pay the county on the bonds.

The commission voted to replace an existing stop sign with a yield sign in the 2300 block of Saline River Road and add a yield sign at the opposite end of the road triangle.

Bill Ring, director of public works, also discussed adding enforcement signs "Road Closed When Muddy/Wet" on 210th Road.

Ring said the county has had numerous issues with vehicles becoming stuck on 210th between Old U.S. 40 and golf course road when conditions are wet. This has included ambulances and fire trucks, Ring said.

Ring said the biggest problem has been with people traveling the road for recreational purposes.&nbsp;Tow trucks are refusing to go into the area to pull vehicles out, and vehicles have been left in the road for days, he said.&nbsp;

The county needs the signs so law enforcement officials have the authority to ticket people who travel the road when conditions are unfavorable.

"I think there's danger to our economic drivers out there if we have recreational vehicles we can't pull out that are in the way even as it starts drying up through the middle of the day," Roths said. "I am happy to deter that some way or another."

The commission will vote on the change at a later date.

Ellis County approves $26.5M budget, keeps taxes flat

Beginning Tuesday, traffic on the west Vine Street frontage road will be switched into the west lane of the frontage road

Vine Street traffic flow shifts again this week

The Hays ARC Park project has raised enough money to proceed with phase one, which is the installation of an accessible playground.

The project has raised about $700,000 of the $774,000 needed to build the ARC playground at&nbsp;33rd and Hillcrest in Hays and the city has given the group authorization to move forward with the construction of the park.&nbsp;

Playground equipment has been ordered and dirt work is scheduled to begin in October. The delivery time on the equipment will likely be weeks longer than normal because of COVID-19 complications, sad Sarah Meitner,&nbsp;Arc of the Central Plains board president.

A ceremonial groundbreaking will be scheduled for late September or early October.

Unfortunately, the playground will unlikely be open for play until spring. The rubber surface that protects playground users from falls can only be laid in weather that remains 40 degrees or warmer for a week.

This is the last piece of the playground that will go in, and contractors think it will be too cold once the other elements of the playground are finished to lay the surface.

Some of the equipment the park will include are accessible swings. One of the swings allows people to face each other. Another swing is a pad on which you can lie. The park also includes bucket swings that the user can be strapped into.

The park will include a we-go-round, which is like a merry-go-round, but its surface is flat with the ground so a wheelchair can roll onto it.

There is an accessible zip line and global motion ball, a large ball that spins like a merry-go-round, but has a governor for a soft stop. The Sway Fun is also a wheelchair-accessible piece of equipment. It rocks back and forth.

"The Sway Fun and the we-go-round besides being accessible, they are also multi-generational," Meitner said. "That means Kathy can get on with her granddaughter, and she can play right along side her and also our adults who cognitively still want to play, the [equipment] can handle an adult-size frame or an adult-size wheel chair.

The city required the park group remove plans for multiple cloth shade coverings. They said the covers easily tear and are expensive to replace. There will be two hard-cover awnings installed instead, Kathy McAdoo,&nbsp;Arc of the Central Plains executive director, said.

The Robert E. and Patricia A. Schmidt Foundation pledged $100,000 to the project as it launched in 2018. Last week Gary Shorman, president of the foundation, presented a check to the ARC Park group in time for the playground equipment to be ordered.

"The Schmidt Foundation is excited to help with the ARC Park project and will be working with the group to help finish up the next step as well," Shorman said. "There are so many in our community who would be able to use the park and enjoy the splash feature as well.”

Meitner said the Schmidt Foundation donation, which served as a matching grant, validated the project and served as a spring board for the ARC Park fundraising effort.

The Schmidt Foundation has been the single largest donor to the project thus far.

Now the majority of the money has been raised for the playground, the project is organizing to launch fundraising for the next phase of the project — an accessible splash pad.&nbsp;

Meitner said the group will have revised numbers for fundraising purposes soon.

Because the lead time on ordering the equipment for the splash pad and construction time is longer, Meitner said she doubted the splash pad would be installed in time for next summer.

Meitner said in addition to local donations, the project will continue to apply for grants for phase II, and phase III, which is an accessible baseball field.

Meitner said the community has been very generous in donating to the playground project. More than 700 individual donors have given to the project thus far.&nbsp;

Brent Kaiser,&nbsp;Arc of the Central Plains activities director, also wanted to thank intern Mia Haines, who helped jump start fundraising again after efforts were slowed by COVID-19.

ARC Park to break ground in October

OK, not all the primary election votes are counted yet, and there may be a surprise or two by the time everything is final, but the name that wasn’t on your ballot has clearly lost.

Gov. Laura Kelly, the Democrat who is mid-term and has two years of living in public housing at Cedar Crest, a nice home to be driven to by security agents every night after wrestling or at least negotiating with members of the Kansas Senate, which took a hard right turn based on yet uncertain primary votes.

What’s the deal? Well, it appears that at the primary election the State Senate is going from a 29-vote majority by party label to an actual 27-plus votes to override Kelly vetoes of bills.

That’s going from a theoretical “veto-proof” majority to an actual, read the votes, veto proof majority.

A handful of moderate Republicans lost their primary elections, and if their defeaters manage to make it through the general election, Kelly likely won’t see her vetoes sustained.

Kelly wasn’t overridden during the 2020 session—when she vetoed two tax-cut bills. She was overridden just once during the 2019 session, her first year in office after moving from the Senate to the governorship—a line-item veto that included $50 million to repay the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System money that was borrowed from it during the cash-crunched former Republican Gov. Sam Brownback administration.

At least three, maybe four or more relatively moderate Republicans have been defeated by more conservative candidates for the upcoming general election, which unless Democrats can pick up a significant number of seats above their current 11, the Senate will be veto-proof.

The House? It appears to be growing a little more conservative, but it is the Senate where the real partisan scrapping has been occurring in the past two years, which has been the “ground zero”&nbsp; for battles with the governor over such issues as expansion of Medicaid to more than 100,000 Kansans and paring the Kansas Supreme Court’s decision that abortion is a constitutionally protected right.

And the budget? That’s where the real fights are likely, and where the final veto-proof majority comes into play on less sensational issues for most Kansans.

Have you seen the campaign brochure touting hiring more public health nurses by the state? Didn’t think so. Or…do most voters base their decisions on small spending issues like staffing for the Department of Administration? Didn’t think so, either.&nbsp;

It appears no candidates are campaigning on the budget except the generic “conservative spending” or “downsize government.”&nbsp; Nobody talks “downsizing” to explain why you spend more time waiting for a driver’s license renewal, or trying to get through on the phone to the Labor department to check on unemployment insurance checks…

Of course, we’re not going to know until about 2 p.m. Jan. 11, when the 2021 legislative session officially opens—and when the first bills are introduced—just where the session is going to go with the confidence on the 3rd&nbsp;floor of the Statehouse that nearly anything it can pass can’t be vetoed by the 2nd&nbsp;floor.

And, how do Democrats campaign on the issue that the state’s elected governor will lose most of her authority to direct the state if voters in generally Republican Senate districts vote for whomever has the “R” behind their name on the ballot?

Yes, we’re wondering just what that brochure or 30-second TV ad is going to look like when it focuses on preserving the leadership authority of a governor who has a “D” behind her name?

HAWVER: Kan. primary deals a blow to Gov. Kelly

Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson starts the week at $31.50 per barrel after dropping 75 cents on Friday. Current prices are down a dollar from the first of the month, and are about twenty dollars a barrel less than at the first of the year. AAA says Americans are enjoying the cheapest summer gasoline prices in more than a decade, averaging $2.14 per gallon over the last two months. The auto club says the national average Thursday ($2.18 per gallon) was nearly a penny cheaper than a week earlier, and half a dollar cheaper than a year ago. The statewide average of $1.96 once again placed Kansas among just 13 states below two dollars a gallon. Filling up a 15-gallon tank will cost you more than a dollar less than six months ago, and you'll save more than five dollars compared to a year ago. The government says U.S. crude-oil production in May dropped by the biggest percentage since at least 1980.&nbsp; National output dropped nearly two million barrels per day from April to May, according to the Monthly Production Report from the Energy Information Administration. EIA says Texas, which produces about 41% of U.S. crude, &nbsp;saw a nearly 15% drop, down roughly 764,000 barrels per day. Production in Kansas was down 12% to 66,000 barrels per day. Baker Hughes reported 247 active drilling rigs across the U.S. last week, marking a decline of four oil rigs. The count in New Mexico was down three. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reported two active drilling rigs east of Wichita, up one, and eight in Western Kansas, which is up two on the week. Drilling is underway on one lease in Stafford County.&nbsp; Kansas regulators approved just six new drilling permits last week, one in the eastern half of the state, and one west of Wichita. Kansas operators completed 12 wells last week, five of them east of Wichita and seven in Western Kansas, including one in Stafford County.&nbsp; The government says oil and related product markets continue to be affected by efforts to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. But a new report from the Energy Information Administration shows that gasoline demand increased month-over-month in May as many states began to relax stay-at-home orders. EIA says demand for jet fuel plummeted for the third straight week, because of reduced commercial air travel. Jet fuel demand dropped by more than one million barrels per day from April to May, a 67% decrease, to reach its lowest level since 1968. Oil-by-rail shipments continue to lag behind last year's record pace, according to the Association of American Railroads. For the week ending August 1st, operators moved 10,070 tanker cars hauling petroleum, down more than seven percent on the week, and nearly 20% lower than a year ago. Monthly numbers from the AAR show total freight traffic in July was down more than 17% from a year earlier. They say coal and other energy-related rail commodities continue to struggle more than most. The world’s five largest oil companies slashed production rates and collectively cut the value of their assets by nearly $50 billion in the second quarter, as the coronavirus pandemic caused a drastic fall in fuel prices and demand. BP was the hardest hit, taking a $17 billion hit. The five majors also cut capital expenditures by a combined $25 billion.&nbsp; The Trump administration is seeking to ease a slew of Obama Administration rules for oil and gas drilling. One of the latest proposals could save energy companies more than $130 million over the next decade. But critics say that by relaxing requirements for measuring and reporting production on federal lands, the policy leaves open the possibility that taxpayers won't get their fair share of royalties. The proposal will be subject to public comment after being published in the federal register, which officials say has not been scheduled yet. The administration is also once again trying to get rid of rules for methane emissions in the oil patch. The Wall Street Journal reports the EPA wants to end requirements that producers have systems and procedures to detect methane leaks. Those new rules would apply to new wells and those drilled since 2016. They would also remove the largest pipelines, storage sites and other infrastructure from EPA emissions oversight. The administration has been trying to make such changes since 2017, but challenges from Congress and in the courts have, so far, stymied those efforts. The Energy Information Administration says U.S. inventories dropped 7.4 million barrels last week, and are now about 16% above the five-year average for this time of year. EIA reported a down-tick in U.S. crude-oil production, which dropped by more than 100,000 barrels per day to just over 11.3 million [["eleven point three million"]].Imports were up 900,000 barrels per day. EIA says the four-week average imports are about 18% less than the same four-week period last year. An appeals panel sided with the operators of the Dakota Access Pipeline, saying it's up to the Trump administration whether the pipe can continue to operate while a more robust environmental review is conducted. A judge in July ordered the pipeline shut down for the review, a move that rocked the industry. But the court of appeals is blocking that order until the Army Corps of Engineers can clarify in court whether the agency thinks the pipeline must shut down for the review.&nbsp; There's another pipeline shutdown in the headlines in North Dakota. This time, a federal agency says an oil pipeline is in fact "trespassing" on tribal land. The Bismarck Tribune reports an easement expired seven years ago. That easement allowed the Tesoro High Plains Pipeline to cross part of the Fort Berthold Reservation on its way to Marathon Petroleum's Mandan Refinery.&nbsp; The Bureau of Indian Affairs ordered the shutdown and is demanding $187 million in damages.&nbsp; Marathon has vowed to appeal the BIA’s order, which requires that the company “immediately cease and desist” using the segment deemed to be trespassing. The line remains operational according to an online statement.

Pat Roberts, Kansas, with a lifetime achievement award for service to rural America as part of the institute's celebration of its 30 years at Kansas State University.&nbsp; The institute will host a virtual event at 4 p.m., Aug. 19, to celebrate its April 1990 founding. The award will be presented virtually to Roberts at the event.&nbsp; "Sen. Roberts has been an outstanding advocate for rural citizens throughout his many years in Congress," said Shawna Moyer, chair of the board of directors of the Huck Boyd Institute. "He was a close friend to Huck Boyd, the rural leader for whom the institute is named. Sen. Roberts is retiring this year after 39 years in Congress. We are pleased to honor him in this way." Roberts is expected to make remarks via Zoom from Washington, D.C. Ellis County will conduct a budget hearing at 5:15 p.m. Monday at the Ellis County Administrative Center.

The proposed budget keeps the mill levy flat at&nbsp;36.910 mills. The proposed budget is&nbsp; $26,557,396. This is compared to actual expenditures of $25,862,533 for 2019.

The board in its regular meeting will consider bids for bonds for road and bridge work.

The board is also set to consider replacing an existing stop sign with a yield sign in the 2300 block of Saline River Road and adding a yield sign at the opposite end of the road triangle.

Ellis County Commission to consider budget with flat tax rate

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded a boil water advisory for Ellis&nbsp;Co RWD 1C.&nbsp;The advisory was issued&nbsp;because of distribution maintenance, resulting in&nbsp;a loss of pressure in the system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.&nbsp;

Laboratory testing samples collected from&nbsp;Ellis&nbsp;Co RWD 1C&nbsp;indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Christian women’s group cancels meetings through 2020

Although delayed by COVID-19, the newest store is now open on the bricks, <a href="https://homeelementshays.com/">Home Elements by Jenny</a>, 119 E. Eighth.

Owner Jennifer Schaffer has been refurbishing furniture for years, but after moving back to Hays with her husband, the Hays native decided to expand into a brick-and-mortar store.

Schaffer, 45, had been creating items for anniversaries and events for family and friends and her own home, but all out of her own home.

"For me, it was kind of a hobby and something to keep my mind busy, since I was a stay-at-home mom — something I enjoyed doing," she said.&nbsp;

Her oldest is 19 and her youngest, twins, are 12. She said she always wanted to have her own store, and she thought now was the time to do it.

"I wanted to share with other people the things that I could do," she said.

The store was set to open in the spring, but the COVID pandemic and subsequent shutdowns delayed the opening. Schaffer said she was not able to obtain some of the items she had ordered for her home decor showroom until recently.

Schaffer and her husband purchased the building in May and did some minor renovations to prepare the showroom.

"As I went around and shopped, because I'm from here, I said, 'I think there is something missing.' [I just wanted] to add something else," she said. "I really wanted to be downtown. That was a big part of it because I think downtown growing is a huge thing in Hays."

The building also has a classroom.&nbsp;Once social distancing rules are relaxed, Schaffer said she would like to offer furniture restoration classes as well as children's art classes in that space.

Home Elements by Jenny is carrying all sorts of item for the home, including furniture, accessories, pictures, lighting and the candle line, River Chic.

"I kind of look for antiques that are in bad shape and need to be freshened up — unique pieces," Schaffer said. "I will add a twist to them or texture and different kinds of resign pieces or artistic pieces. Everything I do I like to do a little bit different."

She also purchases new items from various manufacturers.

Schaffer said she likes all aspects of design, but leans toward shabby chic and more rustic pieces. She also has more traditional and farmhouse furnishings.

"What I try to do here in the store is to add a little bit of all worlds, so everyone has opportunity, because everyone has different taste," she said.

Schaffer carries a full line of Dixie Belle Paints, which are&nbsp;Chalk Mineral paints for DIY projects or professional painters. She also carries Jade Bloom Essential Oils for diffusers.

Schaffer is open by appointment. She is waiting to see what happens with COVID-19, but she said she hopes to open for regular hours later this fall.&nbsp;

Home Elements by Jenny offers home decor in downtown Hays

Jimmy raised his arms higher and higher, a smile spreading across his face, as he, the enchanted tree, grew larger and larger.

Jimmy was one of about 30 individuals with developmental disabilities who became stars this week as part of the Center Stage Theatre Camp.

The story of the enchanted tree is one of the scripts Center Stage participants practiced this week in anticipation of a performance recorded for broadcast on YouTube on Friday.&nbsp;

In addition to three simple scripts, the group also performed "Lean on Me" in American Sign Language.

This is the second year Annie Wasinger, 17, a senior at Thomas More Prep-Marian, directed the camp.

This year's camp looked a little different from last year. All the participants and volunteers wore face shields. Brightly-colored dots were placed on the stage to promote social distancing. Individuals who lived together or had regular contact were grouped together to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Wasinger said she thought this year's camp is probably more important for the campers because COVID-19 has resulted in the cancellation of other activities, such as Special Olympics, in which they usually participate.

"They had a lot of disappointments where a lot of those got canceled or postponed, so for me personally, I wanted it to happen in any kind of way," she said.

She said the camp allows individuals to have a creative outlet.

"I think the most important thing they gain is being able to interact with each other and that we can do that safely," she said. "Also so they can be creative.&nbsp;

"There are so many who come in and they are really timid and shy. Then they get on stage and they completely come out of their shell. You will talk to their providers later and their family and they will say, 'We've never seen so and so do anything like that. We didn't know he had it in him.' "

People realize they can be like the people they see on TV, she said.

"I think it is also really, really important for me and for them to be able to come somewhere and just be authentically themselves," she said. "It's a safe space where you can be anybody. I try to tell people that on the first day."

Wasinger has been a part of local theater since she premiered in her first Hays Community Theatre production at the tender age of 3. She also is active in her school's theater productions.

Wasinger's parents took on the care of a man with cerebral palsy before Annie was born. Joel, who Annie considers a brother, is now in his 3os. He was unable to participate in the camp this year, but she said she felt she has always had a special connection to individuals with disabilities.&nbsp;

"That was the inspiration for it. I thought he should be able to perform and have the same opportunities I had," she said.

Wasinger is using an online curriculum, 4th Wall Backstage, for the camp that is geared for individuals with disabilities. She has also mixed in games she learned at theater camps and a couple of activities of her own design.

The campers play one minute of fame during which they can sing or perform anything they want. 

They play pass the hat. They also play a game called build the machine. On Wednesday, each camper was a part of a car with an assigned sound and motion to represent their part.&nbsp;

As Wasinger's graduation approaches this spring, she said she is leaning toward entering a career in the sciences, but she thinks people with disabilities will always be a part of her life.

"I never really thought of it as a career, but more of a lifestyle," she said. "Wherever I go, I think I will always engage with people with disabilities, and I will always remain best buds with everyone who is in this room."

The camp was sponsored by Hays Community Theatre; Celebration Community Church, which provided the location; JBW Services; and&nbsp; &nbsp;Gone Logo Screen Printing, which provided discounted T-shirts.

Center Stage Theatre offers creative outlet for disabled campers

MANHATTAN – In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Kansas State University’s Extension Master Gardener program is planning to offer a statewide online training option this fall for those wanting to join the popular group.&nbsp;

Cheryl Boyer, an associate professor in the Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources and interim coordinator of the state’s Master Gardener program, said weekly online sessions begin Sept. 3 and will run through Dec. 17.&nbsp;

The cost for online training is $45 plus any additional fees set by the county – or about $1 per hour of educational content, she said -- and can be paid at the local extension office. Some counties may offer an in-person or hybrid training option.&nbsp;

For online training, Kansans must sign up through&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ksre.k-state.edu/about/stateandareamaps.html">their local extension office</a>&nbsp;by August 28. More information about the program is&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/master-gardeners">available online</a>. Training sessions will be held each Thursday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for 15 weeks.&nbsp;

“This online choice is optional and local units are not required to use this training in place of their own programming plans,” Boyer said. “However, because fall travel is limited for K-State Research and Extension educators, face-to-face training can not be expected or required.”&nbsp;

The K-State Research and Extension Master Gardener program is available to anyone with an interest in horticulture. “If you want to improve your gardening skills and knowledge, and you like to work with people, this program may be for you,” Boyer said.&nbsp;

The program is currently offered in&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/master-gardeners/mg-program-counties.html">more than half of Kansas’ counties</a>.&nbsp;

Once certified as an Extension Master Gardener, participants are asked to donate time in their community to help others learn more about gardening and horticulture. Boyer noted that in 2019, Extension Master Gardeners donated approximately 99,000 hours for a total value of more than $2.6 million.&nbsp;

This fall’s 15-week training schedule will provide up to 50 hours of training on 13 topics delivered by lecture and hands-on activities. Boyer said the topics include plant growth and development, soils, turfgrass, annual and perennial flowers, landscape maintenance, woody ornamentals, vegetable gardening, insects, pesticide safety, plant diseases, fruit, landscape design and wildlife management.&nbsp;
