The traditional jazz band was founded in Denver more than 60 years ago, and is recognized across the nation for playing outstanding traditional, Dixieland, gospel and spiritual music. &nbsp;The group has also toured widely across Europe. Colby High School will host Queen City Jazz Band, at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 14. Admission is by season ticket or adults $20, students $10 at the door.&nbsp; In addition to businesses and individual donors across northwest Kansas, Queen City Jazz Band is made possible through special funding by the Dane Hansen Memorial Foundation, Lenora; the Greater Northwest Kansas Community Foundation, Bird City; and the Thomas County Community Foundation. Bill Clark, tubist and band leader, joined the QCJB in 1976 and became the leader in 1985. A retired University of Colorado music professor, Clark set a goal while a 1960's high school student to one day play in the already popular band. Band members come from strong music performance and/or music eduction background and all have played with a number of local bands prior to joining QCJB. Instrumentalists include Kevin Bollinger, trumpet; John Bredenberg, clarinet and saxophone; Eric Staffelt, trombone; Hank Troy, piano; Rory Thomas, banjo; and Tony Pantelis, drums. Red Cross needs blood donations after winter storms; area drives scheduled  

One of the most used applications for connecting people in 2021 is Zoom. It has been used to take the place of the classroom or transform a traditional classroom into a virtual one. Zoom has literally turned thousands of meeting rooms and classrooms into pandemic safe areas.&nbsp;

Prior to the pandemic, my schedule at work often included one or two Zoom meetings per week. Now, it is not uncommon to have one or two (or more) Zoom sessions each day. My Zoom sessions vary from our Cottonwood team meetings to classes I am teaching or taking. I have literally visited Washington DC, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Rochester, New York through virtual conferences during the past year. While I missed l face-to-face networking and experiencing the culture of traveling to a different part of the country, I did receive valuable ideas to incorporate in my work here in the Cottonwood Extension District.&nbsp;

If you would like to learn more about Zoom mark your calendar for Friday, March 12th, and join me at 1:00 PM via Zoom of course. I have set up the Zoom link and you will need to e-mail me at&nbsp; <a href="mailto:dkrug@ksu.edu">dkrug@ksu.edu</a> so that I can send you that link. Megan Hammeke, from the Great Bend Recreation Center, is teaming up with me to help lead this session. Our goal is to cover the basics of the Zoom platform and help you navigate the features it offers.&nbsp;

Even though Zoom was launched in 2013 under the direction of Eric Yuan, the capacity of hosting a Zoom meeting was just 15 people. By 2015, that number mushroomed to a thousand. Statistics show that in March 2020 that two million people used Zoom every day. I think back to the days, back in 2006, when our son, Adam, spent a year teaching in Slovakia. We were thrilled to have a decent connection for our phone call (no video) once a week via Skype. Technology has certainly come a long way. Now we enjoy regular family meetings via Zoom since our kids and grandkids do not live in Great Bend.&nbsp;

We would love to have a nice sized group of folks who are wanting to learn more about Zoom join us on the 12th. All you need is a computer, ipad, or smart phone and an internet connection. You will be able to join from the comfort of your home. Feel free to give me a call if you have any questions about our Zoom session. I hope to “see” you on the 12th!

World Water Day is an annual observance focusing on the importance of water.&nbsp; To celebrate, the City of Hays and the KSU Big Creek Middle Smoky Hill River Watersheds are once again partnering to host a World Water Day Fun Fest on Thursday, March 25, from 10 a.m. to noon, in the lobby of the Sternberg Museum of Natural History.&nbsp; 

This free event will feature fun, hands-on, "water-related" activities for kids of all ages. In addition, educational information regarding water conservation and water quality will be provided.&nbsp; Social distancing and masks are required. &nbsp;

“Bring your best.” Perhaps you received that advice from a schoolteacher or coach. Today we’ll meet a rural Kansas farmer who has built a business by bringing the best of his family’s products to farmers markets.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Gail and Sue Johnson are owners of Johnson Farms Country Market, which specializes in producing and selling produce, canned items, and baked goods at local farmers markets. Gail grew up on a farm near Bennington. Sue’s family lived at Burdick and Enterprise before she and Gail were married.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sue became a nurse, and Gail worked as a lab technician at a plant in Salina. In 1999, they bought a farm near Hope. “Our families both had big gardens growing up,” Gail said. They put in a garden at their new place. One day they stopped at the farmers market in Abilene. “We thought that would be fun to do,” Gail said.&nbsp;

They set up a stand to sell their garden vegetables at the weekly farmers market in Abilene, and it went well. Then they added some jams and jellies. When they wanted to make and sell pickles from their cucumbers, they needed a license and an approved kitchen. “Our first commercial kitchen was in 2015,” Gail said.&nbsp;

Sue’s mom and grandma had an old German family recipe for bierocks, and people said they were good enough to sell. The bierocks are now their No. 1 seller.&nbsp;

The business is called Johnson Farms Country Market, with products sold at a series of community-based farmers markets throughout the year. The Johnsons go to a regular circuit of farmers markets. Salina has a market on Tuesday, Abilene has a market on Wednesday, Junction City has a market on Thursday, and on Saturday there are markets in Abilene and Manhattan.&nbsp;

The Johnsons also sell products at the Prairieland Market, a cooperatively owned grocery store in Salina, and the Hoffman Grist Mill in Enterprise.&nbsp;

Today, Johnson Farms Country Market sells bierocks, cinnamon rolls, cookies, maple bars, banana bread, fruit pies, salsa and more. “These days, most of our produce is needed for our baked goods,” Gail said. “We source everything we can locally.” Fruit pies include such flavors as strawberry, rhubarb, gooseberry, peach, blueberry, red raspberry and more.&nbsp;

“The chocolate chip cookies are our own recipe,” Gail said. One of their cooking secrets is to use a mix of cake and bread flour. “We might make a hundred dozen cookies in a week,” he said. That also meant that Sue might be up baking until 3 or 4 in the morning before the market.&nbsp;

“We had a family meeting and had to decide if we would try to expand further or not,” Gail said. They chose to pursue the growth opportunities. In early 2020, Gail retired and went full-time into the business. A new 42 x 64 Morton building was constructed to house an expanded commercial kitchen with space for delivery vans. “Our five kids all help, plus a daughter-in-law,” Gail said. Their daughters also produce arts and craft items.&nbsp;

When COVID-19 hit in spring 2020, farmers markets and other businesses shut down. Then food workers were deemed essential, and markets reopened, with added sanitation and socially distanced spacing. “Andrea from A&amp;H Farms is our market manager in Manhattan, and she’s done a great job,” Gail said.&nbsp;

What is the key to success in direct marketing through farmer’s markets? “You have to offer a really good product and be at the market consistently,” Gail said. “Almost everything we make from scratch. My wife will not cook anything out of a can or a box. People love our pie crust.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“My wife is very picky about what comes out of our kitchen,” he said. “We pride ourselves in bringing the best products that we can to the farmer’s markets.” That’s key to this business near the rural community of Hope, population 368 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

TOPEKA — The Kansas Army National Guard’s Field Maintenance Shop 1 in Hays placed first at the National Guard Bureau in the Tables of Distribution and Allowances category for the 2020 Army Award for Maintenance Excellence after facing months of challenges and preparation.

The AAME program annually recognizes maintenance units across the Active Duty, National Guard and Reserve Components that demonstrate excellence in the field of maintenance operations.

Before being selected at the NGB level, FMS 1 submitted their packet regionally to National Guard Region 5, which includes Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas, where they placed second among five TDA packet submissions. Tables of Distribution and Allowances units are non-deployable and typically support equipment in multiple units throughout portions of their states.

Field Maintenance Shop 1 shop chief, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Michael Schmidtberger, explained that the process of preparing to submit a packet for the regional competition was challenging and lengthy.

“Gathering information, submitting it to the Kansas AAME representative and other key maintenance personnel in the state for input and making edits took approximately three months of back-and-forth, as well as about thirty additional hours of my personal time,” Schmidtberger said.

Some of that information about the shop accomplishments throughout the year includes best practices, lessons learned, Soldier competency in the maintenance field and the effects that funding and parts availability have on a unit’s readiness.

“It’s a ton of information that has to be gathered and it takes a lot of time and patience to prepare,” Schmidtberger said.

After submission, the Region 5 board suggested edits on how the competitors could improve their packets. FMS 1 updated their packet, incorporating the feedback, and then submitted to NGB where they were judged against other TDA units from across the U.S. This time they came in first.

Lt. Col. Wallace Miller, surface maintenance manager for the state of Kansas, said the first place win made sense, given the unit’s strong leadership and commitment to excellence.

“FMS 1's hard work and dedication over the last year, and historically, met or exceeded maintenance readiness for their supported units,” Miller said. “The shop is customer-focused and remains proactive in addressing organizational readiness, and they focus on developing team members to continually improve maintenance competencies.”

Schmidtberger attributes a huge part of FMS 1’s success to those individual team members, who kept the trucks that are under their shop’s responsibility at 97% fully mission capable throughout the year.

“It’s the team’s attention to detail on equipment deficiencies,” Schmidtberger said. “Without the people on the floor finding and fixing the faults in the trucks and other equipment, there would be no need to submit this AAME packet.”

“All successful programs begin with developing the individual Soldier,” Miller said. “Focusing on developing and mentoring the individual is what will ultimately result in a team of professionals capable of solving the toughest problems.”

Sgt. Maj. Craig Posch, state representative for the AAME, said a few other maintenance shops in Kansas started their packets, however, due to the pandemic, COVID-19 support missions, and overseas deployments, many shops weren’t able to continue on with their packets. Although they didn’t end up submitting, Posch said there was still value in going through the packet process.

“By going through the steps and building the packet, these TDA units help build stronger maintenance programs,” Posch said.

Schmidtberger said one advantage FMS 1 had in being successful was their full time staff. In a shop of nine full-time Guardsmen, the shop chief had enough Soldiers working to maintain readiness of equipment for the companies they support across the state. Shops without the same staffing may struggle more: traditional, part-time Soldiers may want to help out when and where they can when their communities, governors or country need them, however, prolonged support may be infeasible when volunteering for additional time takes them away from their full-time jobs for several days or months at a time.

“People join the National Guard to serve their communities and the nation,” Schmidtberger said. “It’s hard to find a balance of keeping people in the shop to maintain equipment when Soldiers are deploying with their units, volunteering for stateside missions and attending schools that help with their career progression.”

After winning at the NGB level, FMS 1’s packet competed at the Department of the Army level. Although the FMS 1 didn’t finish in the top two at the DA level, they still have the bragging rights of bringing home the gold from NGB. This is no small accomplishment, especially taking into consideration the importance of maintenance.

“Maintenance is the foundation to successful military operations,” Miller said. “When equipment is fully mission capable the commander is able to employ it in dynamic training and has faith that the equipment will perform as designed for the duration of the training event. Soldiers build trust and confidence with their equipment through utilization and repetition; an effective maintenance program enables this trust and confidence.”

Schmidtberger explained that excellence in maintenance is not only about what the field maintenance shops do for readiness, but also what Soldiers can do at the company level. Soldiers need to really use and test their equipment as opposed to only starting and running it for a while.

“If we don’t use the equipment, it rots,” Schmidtberger said. “Seals dry out which causes leaks, making the equipment inoperable.”

Those faults create more issues down the road that cause them to be in the shop for longer periods of time for repairs. When those trucks, generators and other equipment are awaiting repairs in the shop, it brings unit readiness down.

“Get your equipment out and exercise them,” Schmidtberger said. “Don’t just go out to the bullpen, start an engine and let it run. There are so many other aspects of the equipment that need worked such as the wheels, bearings, hydraulics. Keep that grease moving.”

Hays team places first for National Guard-wide maintenance award

A Meriden woman has won the first $25,000 top prize 
in the Kansas Lottery’s $5 Cash Cow instant game, just four days after 
her 18th birthday. Sloan Stanley decided to buy her very 
first — and only — lottery ticket while at work and scratched to reveal the 
huge win.

“I bought the Cash Cow ticket because I like cows and thought it was 
cute,” Stanley laughed. “I was in shock that the first ticket I ever 
bought ended up winning $25,000!”

The winner told her father first, who didn’t believe she had won what
 she claimed. But after reviewing it himself, he concluded Stanley was 
correct.

 “My family is all super excited and happy for me, and they 
still can’t believe it!” she said.

Stanley plans to attend Fort Hays State University in the fall to 
study Elementary Education. 

“I’m excited to start college later this 
year and I hope this will help me graduate without debt!" she said.

The winning ticket was sold at Country Harvest Apple Market at 7312 
K-4 Highway in Meriden.&nbsp;

It is time for the annual KSU Watersheds and city of Hays Water Poster Contest. The 2021 theme is “Let’s Talk Water.”

Daycares, pre-schools, USD 489, Holy Family Elementary, TMP Marian and home-school students, students at Fort Hays State University and NCK Tech, and adults in the city of Hays are eligible to participate.&nbsp;

The “Let’s Talk Water” posters can focus on water conservation or stormwater/water quality messages. Posters could show how to reduce water usage indoors, outdoors, and/or at home and work. Also, posters might share how to reduce sediment, nutrients, and E.coli bacteria, household chemicals, etc. that are harmful to water sources. Both water conservation and stormwater/water quality can be highlighted on the same poster.&nbsp;

Posters must be horizontal, designed on 12 x 18-inch white poster paper with “Let’s Talk Water” included. Posters can be designed with pencil, paints, pens, crayons, or markers. In addition, the posters can be 3-dimensional, or compute-generated. Name, age, and teacher need to be included on the back of the poster.&nbsp;

Poster paper is available for pick-up at Public Works Department, 1002 Vine Street, during regular business hours.&nbsp;

Prize money will be awarded to 1st-3rd place winners in each age division.&nbsp;

Winning posters will be displayed at TriCentral Office, 1101 Main, supply during the month of May and also at the Ellis County Fair.&nbsp;

Posters are due by Thursday, March 18, 2021 at school offices, city hall, or the Public Works Department.&nbsp;

Annual water poster contest open to Hays students, residents

The annual Great Bend Farm, Ranch and Hemp Expo was just one of several
large events that was thrown for a loop last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The three-day event typically brings vendors and demonstrators to show off the
latest in farm and agriculture equipment and technology. Usually bringing in
thousands of people, the show went to a virtual format last April. 

Farm show
chair Jan Westfall says this year’s show will be back to an in-person event. 
"I think people are ready to get out," said Westfall. "I don't know what
 this show will look like. There will obviously be some changes. We'll 
get back to full force. Star Expos puts in a lot of work to bring people
 here." 
This year’s farm show will be April 7-9 at the Great Bend Expo Complex, west of town. Great Bend Chamber President
Megan Barfield reminds everyone that the show is entertaining for everyone, not
just farmers. 
"People do not believe it until they go out there...the farm show really
 is a family-friendly event," said Great Bend Chamber President Megan 
Barfield. "It is not just farm equipment. There are things for the 
ladies, for the kids, animals and horse demonstrations." 
Star Expos conducts three farm shows each year in Wichita Falls, Texas; McCook,

Great Bend farm show is back to ‘normal’ this April

Most gardeners think that soil tests are done only to find out what nutrients are deficient. However, it is just as important to know if you have adequate levels of nutrients so you don't add unneeded fertilizer. 

The most basic soil test checks pH and the levels of phosphorus and potassium. Most of the lawn and garden soil tests that come out of our soil-testing lab show more than adequate levels of both phosphorus and potassium. If those nutrients are not needed, applying them is a waste of money and can be a source of pollution. 

In extreme cases, excess phosphorus can interfere with the uptake of micronutrients. So, if you haven't taken a soil test in several years, take one this spring. 

Begin by taking a representative sample from a number of locations in the garden or lawn. Each sample is composed of about 8 sub-samples that go from the surface to 6 to 8 inches deep. Mix the sub-samples together in a clean container and select about 1 pint of soil. Take the soil to your local K-State Research and Extension office to have tests done at the K-State soil-testing laboratory for a fee. 

A soil test determines fertility problems, not other conditions that may exist such as poor drainage, poor soil structure, soil borne diseases or insects, chemical contaminants or damage, or shade with root competition from other plants. All of these conditions may reduce plant performance but cannot be evaluated by a soil test. (Ward Upham)

Each sample is composed of about 8 sub-samples that go from the surface to 6 to 8 inches deep. Mix the sub-samples together in a clean container and select about 1 pint of soil. Take the soil to your local K-State Research and Extension office to have tests done at the K-State soil-testing laboratory for a fee. A soil test determines fertility problems, not other conditions that may exist such as poor drainage, poor soil structure, soil borne diseases or insects, chemical contaminants or damage, or shade with root competition from other plants. Do farmers feed the world? In one sense, absolutely. But farm products go through a vast and complex system before they are consumed. Today we’ll learn about an entrepreneurial Kansas farmer who increased his product’s value by taking it directly to the consumer.&nbsp;

Last week we met Leon Winfrey, who farms and runs an outfitting business in southwest Kansas. Years ago, he was in his tractor listening to Paul Harvey on the radio and heard an ad with a line stating that “farmers feed the world.” Leon thought to himself, “I don’t feed the world. I feed my banker, and the fertilizer company, and the seed company.”&nbsp;&nbsp;His crop income was going entirely to pay these high-cost suppliers, and corn prices were low.&nbsp;

“In my hunting business, when my costs go up, I increase my price,” Leon said. “But with my corn, I haul it to town and the grain elevator tells me what price I have to take.” He researched some alternatives, one of which was growing corn for human food such as tortillas.&nbsp;

With research in hand, he went to his banker and told him he wanted to build his own tortilla factory. “I’ll bet,” the banker replied with a laugh. “Well, here’s the price of field corn, and here’s the price of corn when sold as a tortilla,” Leon pointed out. “When would you like the money?” the banker replied.&nbsp;

“I had a very good banker. He was willing to stick his neck out to support us,” Leon said.&nbsp;

With such support, Leon constructed a building, bought corn processing equipment, and started raising white, food-grade corn. He named his business Southwest Tortillas.&nbsp;

When a consultant named Pete came from California to set up the tortilla equipment, he was amazed with Leon’s corn. “I’ve never seen corn this beautiful,” Pete said. “How do you do it?” Leon explained that he grew and harvested the corn locally himself and had his own facility to clean and size the corn before cooking.&nbsp;

Pete moved on to his next job at a tortilla factory in Texas and told the plant operator there about Leon’s high-quality corn. The plant operator told Leon that he wanted to try some of it, so Leon shipped it to Texas. The plant operator tried the corn and was thrilled with the results. “You have the best corn in the world,” he told Leon. “These are the best tortillas I have ever made.” For several years, Leon shipped corn to that tortilla factory and others. Now he uses his corn exclusively in his own plant.&nbsp;

“The goal at Southwest Tortillas is to produce a premium product from our field to your table,” Leon said. The corn is cooked in 1,000-pound cooking tanks at a temperature of 195 degrees and then steeps for 12 hours. At that time, the corn is ground into a dough called masa. Then a very thin six-inch tortilla is rolled out by the tortilla machines and run through an oven at 550 degrees. After that, the tortilla is cut into fourths and fried to become Pedro’s Gourmet Corn Chips.&nbsp;

His chips are available at restaurants and local grocery stores at rural communities in the region, such as the store at Meade, population 1,721 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

Leon has also shipped them across the country for people who have tried them and want more. He said their local production makes it possible for them to achieve high quality control. “This is a small family-run business with just a couple of outside employees,” he said.&nbsp;

Leon also created his own brand of salsa using fresh ingredients to go with his chips. He credited the American Institute of Baking and food scientists at Kansas State University for helping with food labeling and processing.&nbsp;

Farmers produce crops to feed the world, but the value of those crops goes right back out along the way. We commend Leon Winfrey for making a difference by retaining value in his crop by marketing it directly to consumers. Such alternatives can make a world of difference.&nbsp;

PRATT – More than 4,500 birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, crustaceans and mollusks are considered nongame wildlife in Kansas – species that are not trapped, fished or hunted. Collectively, nongame wildlife make up more than 99 percent of all species in the state. Through tax-deductible donations to the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism’s (KDWPT) Chickadee Checkoff program, individuals can support these species through nongame wildlife research, habitat enhancement and restoration, educational projects and more.

“Recently, we’ve been able to set up camera trap surveys for the spotted skunk in southeastern Kansas, survey overwintering bats in Pittsburg and develop an outdoor learning area at Jackson Heights High School in Holton,” said Daren Riedle, KDWPT wildlife diversity coordinator. “These are just a few examples of how we use Chickadee Checkoff donations to support nongame wildlife research, habitats and education in Kansas.”

To make a contribution, simply mark the Chickadee Checkoff box on your state income tax forms (line 36 on K40 form) and designate the amount you would like to donate; there is no minimum or incremental requirement. Donations can also be made at any time throughout the year by mailing a check to Chickadee Checkoff c/o Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) 512 SE 25th&nbsp;Ave, Pratt, KS 67124.

Private donations are crucial in funding these vital species since Chickadee Checkoff proceeds are matched by federal funds. Contributions have been steadily decreasing in recent years, making it imperative for Kansans to mark the Chickadee Checkoff box this year. With the support of the Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants (KSCPA), KDWPT hopes to see more boxes checked this tax season.

KDWPT: Donate a portion of your tax return to support Kansas wildlife

A coach and an athlete will be representing the Arc of the Central Plains at the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games in Orlando, Fla.

Tyler Powers has been chosen as an athlete in bowling, and Brent Kaiser, Arc activities director, has been chosen as a track and field coach.

"I know he's really excited about going," Kaiser said of Powers. "His family is pretty excited about it."

Kaiser said he tries to nominate someone from the local program every time the applications for the USA games come open. He said he would like to grow Special Olympics in western Kansas.

"I think it is not only important for our program, but for western Kansas to have people represented on Team Kansas," he said.

Kaiser said coaching at the national games is a dream come true —something he has wanted to do ever since he started his job with the Arc.

Kaiser will be coaching four athletes from Kansas. Within the next month, Kaiser will send the athletes training plans.

The pandemic will likely complicate the athletes's training for the 2022 games. In a normal year, the athletes would meet with their coaches in person in the year leading up to the national games.

They would have met at the Kansas Special Olympic games, but those games have been canceled for a second year because of the pandemic.

Kaiser said this year most of those meetings will likely be through email and Zoom.

Kaiser is one of 23 coaches, and Powers is one of 71 athletes who have been chosen from Kansas to attend the 2022 national games. Those athletes will compete in eight individual sports and three team sports.

Special Olympics USA expects 4,000 athletes, 10,000 volunteers, 1,500 coaches and 125,000 fans from all 50 states at the 2022 games. Past games have been covered by ESPN.

Powers and Kaiser will need to raise about $1,000 each to support their trips.

FHSU announces advisory board for civic learning, community engagement

The Chamber in Hays will host its first “Legislative Coffee” of 2021 on Saturday, March 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

“Premier Sponsors” Midwest Energy Inc. and the Hays Daily News are proud to provide this opportunity for area residents to visit with local legislators about the legislative process and happenings in Topeka and at the national level. 

Representing on behalf of the Office of U.S. Senator Jerry Moran is Mike Zamrzla, deputy state director. Senator Rick Billinger and Representatives Ken Rahjes and Barb Wasinger will be in attendance to address current legislative issues impacting Kansas.

The legislators and their designees will begin with opening remarks and will be given two minutes to address each question. Closing statements will commence after the Q&amp;A session closes. 

A chat room feature will be available for virtual attendees to input their questions during the virtual event.

Hays Chamber to virtually host Legislative Coffee March 13

Crabgrass preventers are another name for pre-emergence herbicides that prevent crabgrass seeds from developing into mature plants. Many people have a somewhat foggy idea of how they work and assume they kill the weed seed. &nbsp;Such is not the case. They do not kill the seed or even keep the seed from germinating but rather kill the young plant after it germinates. &nbsp;Therefore, they do not prevent germination but prevent emergence. Crabgrass preventers are just that – preventers. With few exceptions they have no effect on existing crabgrass plants, so they must be applied before germination. Additionally, preventers do not last forever once applied to the soil. &nbsp;Microorganisms and natural processes begin to gradually break them down soon after they are applied. If some products are applied too early, they may have lost much of their strength by the time they are needed. Most crabgrass preventers are fairly ineffective after about 60 days, but there is considerable variation among products. (Dimension and Barricade last longer. See below.)​

For most of Kansas, crabgrass typically begins to germinate around May 1 or a little later. April 15 is normally a good target date for applying preventer because it gives active ingredients time to evenly disperse in the soil before crabgrass germination starts. &nbsp;Even better, base timing on the bloom of ornamental plants. The Eastern Redbud tree is a good choice for this purpose. When the trees in your area approach full bloom, apply crabgrass preventer. A follow-up application will be needed about 8 weeks later unless you are using Dimension or Barricade. Products that do require a follow-up application include pendimethalin (Scotts Halts) and Team (Hi-Yield Crabgrass Control). Dimension and Barricade are the only two products that give season-long control of crabgrass from a single application. In fact, they can be applied much earlier than April 15 and still have sufficient residual strength to last the season. Barricade can even be applied in the fall for crabgrass control the next season. Dimension can be applied as early as March 1. Because of the added flexibility in timing, these products are favorites of lawn care companies who have many customers to service in the spring. Though Dimension is usually not applied as early as Barricade, it is the herbicide of choice if it must be applied later than recommended. It is the exception to the rule that pre-emergence herbicides do not kill existing weeds. Dimension can kill crabgrass as long as it is young (two- to three-leaf stage). Dimension is also the best choice if treating a lawn that was planted late last fall.

Normally a pre-emergence herbicide is not recommended unless the lawn has been mowed two to four times. But Dimension is kind to young tall fescue, perennial ryegrass, and Kentucky bluegrass seedlings and some formulations can be applied as early as two weeks after the first sign of germination. However, read the label of the specific product you wish to use to ensure that this use is allowed. Lawns established in the fall can be safely treated with Dimension the following spring even if they have not been mowed. Note that products containing Dimension and Barricade may use the common name rather than the trade name. The common chemical name for Dimension is dithiopyr and for Barricade is prodiamine. Remember, when using any pesticide, read the label and follow instructions carefully. We recommend crabgrass preventers be applied before fertilizer so that the grass isn’t encouraged to put on too much growth too early. However, it may be difficult to find products that contain preemergents without fertilizer. Those that don’t contain fertilizer are listed below. I didn’t find any products containing Barricade that did not also have a fertilizer. If anyone knows of other products that should be listed, let us know and we will publish them in a later newsletter.
