This year, 2021, is the national year of the sunflower. That’s nice recognition, especially because the pretty, golden sunflower is the state flower of Kansas. In one rural community, this has served as inspiration for a beautification initiative. Coincidentally, this is also a year when that community is working to save its historic theater downtown. The building is named – what else? – the Sunflower Theatre.&nbsp;

Last week, we met Dr. Susan Mayo, who is part of the effort to save the historic Sunflower Theatre in downtown Peabody. Among the others joining in that effort is Marilyn Jones, who has also taken on a project of community beautification.&nbsp;

Marilyn is originally from the rural community of Dexter, population 278 people. Now, that’s rural. After attending Oklahoma State University, she and her husband, Gary, came to Peabody in 1961. That’s where Gary began a long-time career as an ag teacher. Their son, Mike, and daughter, Lynn, earned degrees from Kansas State University. Marilyn operated a greenhouse business in the area for some 55 years before retiring.&nbsp;

“We have a big garden, and I’m now raising plants for my own pleasure,” Marilyn said. She’s even raising distinctive red Tunis sheep. She is also deeply involved in the community, including the effort to save a piece of local history.&nbsp;

“The Sunflower Theatre was built in 1920,” Marilyn said. “It had beautiful tile and a terra cotta sunflower design on the ceiling.” Originally, the facility played host to vaudeville shows and then was converted to a movie theater. Eventually it was remade into a bowling alley but has been closed for about 12 years. “When we moved here, there was a nice jewelry store in the front,” Marilyn said.&nbsp;

A nonprofit foundation has been formed with a goal of saving and restoring the building. “Fortunately, the building got a new roof five years ago,” Susan said. “In 2019, we did a major cleanup inside the building.” The group is now seeking grants to support the major work of restoring the old theater.&nbsp;

“Our high school has no stage,” Marilyn said. “When they do concerts, they have to do them in the gym. The theater would be a great place for them to do their performing arts.” Ideally, the theater could host classes in visual art, music and dance. There is also space for offices, classrooms or an upstairs apartment.&nbsp;

The Sunflower Theatre Foundation has already hosted several events in the building. A kickoff concert featured professional musicians and the high school choir. Then COVID-19 hit. “We had a COVID-safe opening in July,” Susan said. “Even with COVID, we had events at Halloween and Christmas.”&nbsp;

Marilyn added, “We had an excellent art show including some 40 local and regional artists. There were nice photographs, oil paintings, and weavings.”&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Marilyn noticed that the National Garden Bureau had proclaimed 2021 as the national year of the sunflower. One day, she was driving to Hesston, and a beautiful sunflower field caught her eye. She tracked down the owner, a local man named Jim Graber.&nbsp;

Mr. Graber was selling high-value seeds for cover crops but, in a bin, he had some sunflower seeds which he donated to Marilyn. She and a couple of other volunteers gathered up leftover mineral tubs from local farmers to recycle as a type of planter. Then Marilyn and friends donated sunflower seeds and planters to the public. The goal is to clean up and beautify the region.&nbsp;

“We set up for a couple of Saturdays downtown and gave sunflower seeds away,” Marilyn said. Ninety-five tubs have been given away. Meanwhile, sunflower seeds are still being donated.&nbsp;

“People could plant sunflowers in the containers or plant anything they want,” Marilyn said. “There are lots of varieties of sunflowers, from 14 inches tall to 14 feet tall.”&nbsp;

In this national year of the sunflower, we commend Marilyn Jones and the other volunteers who are making a difference by beautifying their community and working to save the historic Sunflower Theatre. Marilyn is using her green thumb to promote golden sunflowers.&nbsp;

The Hays Fire Department will be inspecting and flow testing fire hydrants on Tuesday in the area along Commerce Parkway from 13th Street to Reservation Road,&nbsp; including the Hays Regional Airport. 

This is part of a coordinated effort by the city of Hays to inspect all fire hydrants in the city and flush all water mains annually.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Monday reported two new cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County since Friday.

As of Monday, the University of Kansas Health System reported four COVID-19 inpatients at HaysMed, three active and one in recovery.

Since reporting began, there have been&nbsp;3,728 cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County, including 73 coronavirus-related deaths.

Two new COVID-19 cases reported in Ellis Co. since Friday

Details of a rezoning request from agriculture to heavy industrial district for a portion of 5809 230th Ave. will be heard by the Hays Area Planning Commission tonight.

The 32-acre tract of land is owned by Hess Land and is located just outside the city's future land use map area.

According to information from Hays P.I.E. Superintendent Curtis Deines, landowner Dan Hess plans to develop the area for heavy industrial uses. The property is undeveloped and has been used for agriculture production.&nbsp;

The area north of Interstate 70 along 230th Avenue includes several adjacent heavy industries including Midwest Energy Goodman Energy Center, Ellis County Concrete batch plant, and Hess Services.&nbsp;

The planning commission will consider setting a May 17 public hearing for the rezoning request.

Rezoning request for heavy industrial district to be heard by Planning Commission

After a suspension of jury trials due to the pandemic, the 23rd Judicial District is back on track, but COVID precautions continue.

Jury trials across the state were suspended in March. In the 23rd Judicial District, they resumed in November.

The 23rd Judicial District includes Ellis, Gove, Rooks and Trego counties.

Although jury trials were suspended, hearings continued.

The local court system was closed for about two weeks in March 2020. Hearings continued virtually using Zoom. In 2020, the district had 4,666 virtual hearings, and 1,518 virtual hearings have been completed January through March of this year, Judge Glenn Braun said.

When <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/2129a8a9-b6be-4c9a-8735-99c6e2f73f91">jury trials resumed in the fall</a>, the court had a backlog of 35 jury trials. Two jury trials have been conducted. Defendants accepted plea agreements in 19 cases before trial,&nbsp;four defendants entered pleases before the trial dates were set, two cases were continued at the defendants' requests and are pending new dates, five trials are waiting to be set pending arrangements for expert witnesses and three cases are scheduled.

"We are very comfortable," Braun said. "We are caught up."

Braun said few cases go to jury trials. Once the cases are scheduled, they are often settled or the defendants enter into plea agreements. Nationally about 92 percent of criminal cases end in pleas, he said.

The right to a speedy trial is guaranteed by state law. That right was suspended in March when the pandemic began.&nbsp;Chief Justice Marla Luckert reinstated most time limitations and deadlines for court proceedings as of Thursday.&nbsp;

However, the right to a speedy jury trial for criminal defendants will continue to be suspended into 2023.&nbsp;

Amanda Truan, court administrator, said although the 23rd Judicial District has caught up on its backlog of jury trials, other judicial districts in the state have not.

When the Kansas Supreme Court approved courts to resume jury trials, it established a priority in which cases would be heard. Felony defendants who were incarcerated had their cases heard first with civil cases near the bottom of the priority list.

Civil jury trials in the judicial district are set to resume in fall, Truan said.

The 23rd Judicial District faces another complicating factor in scheduling criminal jury trials. Tom Drees, former Ellis County attorney and newly elected district judge, can't hear any cases that originated when he was county attorney.&nbsp;

Braun will hear all of those old cases. Braun has two jury trials scheduled in May and 18 jury trials scheduled in June and July.&nbsp;

COVID precautions remain in place at the Ellis County Courthouse. Although Ellis County and the City of Hays allowed their mask mandates to lapse, masks are still required in all general areas of the courthouse with the exception of the county attorney's office, Truan said. This includes staff who have been fully vaccinated, she said.

Six-foot distancing and cleaning is still being required.

The Supreme Court has notified district courts COVID precautions are to remain in place until further notice.

Plexiglass dividers are still being used in the main courtroom for jury trials. The court is also still using the basement of the Ellis County Administration Center for jury selection to allow for greater social distancing.

Braun said the jury trials that have been conducted during the pandemic have gone well.

The first case that was heard when jury trials resumed in the district was a complex homicide trial. Braun praised the jurors and the court staff.

"What really needs to go out is the compliment to the citizens of Ellis County," Braun said. "I can't imagine how difficult it is to receive that notice in that mail 'Congratulations, you've been selected for jury duty,' in the middle of a COVID situation.

"They showed up, they cooperated. We got no backlash or problems with jurors — nobody demanding to take their masks off."

Jurors indicated in surveys after they served they felt safe and complemented the staff, Braun said.

"It's a real credit to our citizens," he said. "I couldn't be prouder of them."

Positive developments for the courts have come out pandemic, Braun said. Zoom hearings have been a convenience for litigants and their attorneys. Some parties have appeared from out-of-state. 

Attorneys have not needed to drive to Hays from other communities to appear in court, which has meant cost savings for their clients.

"It has made us more efficient, I think, and we can schedule a lot more hearings in a day by using the virtual features we have available," Braun said.

Because of the pandemic, Kansas residents can apply for marriage licenses and protection orders online.

"We're upgrading our website for the judicial district, which was always a goal, but not something that we pursued," Truan said. "Once the pandemic happened, we realized how imperative that was.

"The biggest thing for Judge Braun and I, post-pandemic, is what are we learning, what are we taking forward because we definitely don't want to take steps backward from where we have come."

Federal COVID relief funds were used to purchase iPads for the court. Jurors handle all evidence digitally through those iPads. This is allowing jury trials to move faster.

"There's a saying, 'Never waste a good crisis,' " Braun said. "I think this a good example. The courts system has adapted and been innovative. Everybody benefits."

Jury trials are being video streamed on YouTube because of limits on the number of people who can be in the courtroom during a trial.&nbsp;People are also watching divorce hearing, pleas and sentencings. 

Fort Hays State University&nbsp; and Barton Community College students have been watching the trials for their classes.&nbsp;

The recent Ellis County homicide regularly had more than 100 viewers, and the video had more than 3,000 playbacks, Braun said.

"Victims don't necessarily have to come to court anymore, but they can watch the proceedings on their YouTube channels. We are seeing more people get access to the courts than ever before," he said.

Local court doesn't have jury trial pandemic backlog seen in metro areas

Five-year-old Kaitlyn Cubillo was a happy little girl who loved books, trips to the library, the color pink and unicorns.

Hearing her father, Fill, and her extended family speak Spanish, she begged her mom to read to her from "My First Spanish Workbook." Kaitlyn and her mother, Julie, read the book at bedtime.&nbsp;

"I had to say just one or two pages, because she wanted to go through all of them and read that with me," Julie said.

Kaityln's vibrant life was cut short Jan. 8, when she died from complications of a heart defect.

Early Childhood Connections, where&nbsp; Kaitlyn and her mother were part of the Parents and Teachers program, have organized a fundraiser to build a Little Library in Kaitlyn's memory. The Little Library will be placed on the grounds of the Early Childhood Complex on 13th Street in Hays.

Little Libraries are small, enclosed boxes on posts. Children will be encouraged to take free books from the library, and people can leave books for others to take.

Julie&nbsp;Cubillo said she and her family are very appreciative of the community's efforts to remember Kaitlyn.

"She was a child who knew what she wanted," her mother said. "Nothing was going to stand in her way.&nbsp;She lived life to the fullest."

Julie learned early in her pregnancy about Katilyn's heart defect.&nbsp;

"I decided early on that we were just going to live. It was hard, right, but I wasn't going to fear this defect," she said. "I think that really helped me and helped Kaitlyn. We had a really strong bond, her and I.&nbsp;

"She was fierce. That little girl never stopped. I have seen her go through multiple open heart surgeries and seen her get sick and just bounce right back."

Although her heart condition restricted what she could do physically, she ran with the other kids and never quit, Julie said.

Kaitlyn loved pink and blue and anything sparkly, so the organizers plan to decorate her Little Library using those themes.

"It just means a lot that not only do people sympathize with our situation, but they truly care and they just want to do anything to remember her and support us," Julie said through tears.&nbsp;

"It has been really awesome to see that in our community — people we don't even know."

Julie said it means so much that other children will benefit from this project.

"As a parent, you want your child, but you want people to know them, especially when they fought so hard. You want people to see that strength and have that hope too," she said.

Kaitlyn was referred to Parents as Teachers to help with development with her gross motor skills.

Dayna Schmidt of Parents as Teachers came into the&nbsp;Cubillo home once a month, worked with Kaitlyn and helped guide Julie in activities that helped in Kaitlyn's development.

"It was a great experience," Julie said. "They always had really cute ideas on how to teach them. The things they needed to learn developmentally for their age and also to have someone coming in consistently to the home as a teacher to transition them into preschool. I think we both really enjoyed it."

Having an adult to talk to the during the day was also a relief, as Julie spent a lot of time at home with Kaitlyn.

The project's initial goal is to raise $370 to construct and place the Little Library.

Any additional funds will be used to purchase books to keep the Little Library stocked with books. Dana Stanton of Early Childhood Connections said organizers are discouraging donation of books at this time, because the organization has no place to store the books.

However, once the Little Library is placed, you can bring books to leave for local children.

Applebee's has scheduled a fundraiser for the Kaitlyn's Little Library for 4 to 8 p.m. April 27. Fifty percent of all proceeds from the sale of three-cheese chicken penne, fiesta lime chicken, classic bacon cheeseburgers, chicken tender platters and grilled chicken caesar salad will benefit the fundraiser. Dine-in, carry-out and delivery meals qualify.

 </figure>By CRISTINA JANNEY Hays PostFive-year-old Kaitlyn Cubillo was a happy little girl who loved books, trips to the library, the color pink and unicorns.Hearing her father, Fill, and her extended family speak Spanish, she begged her mom to read to her from "My First Spanish Workbook." Kaitlyn and her mother, Julie, read the book at bedtime.&nbsp;"I had to say just one or two pages, because she wanted to go through all of them and read that with me," Julie said.Kaityln's vibrant life was cut short Jan. 8, when she died from complications of a heart defect.Early Childhood Connections, where&nbsp; Kaitlyn and her mother were part of the Parents and Teachers program, have organized a fundraiser to build a Little Library in Kaitlyn's memory. The Little Library will be placed on the grounds of the Early Childhood Complex on 13th Street in Hays.Little Libraries are small, enclosed boxes on posts. Children will be encouraged to take free books from the library, and people can leave books for others to take.<figure>

 </figure>Julie&nbsp;Cubillo said she and her family are very appreciative of the community's efforts to remember Kaitlyn."She was a child who knew what she wanted," her mother said. "Nothing was going to stand in her way.&nbsp;She lived life to the fullest."Julie learned early in her pregnancy about Katilyn's heart defect.&nbsp;"I decided early on that we were just going to live. It was hard, right, but I wasn't going to fear this defect," she said. "I think that really helped me and helped Kaitlyn. We had a really strong bond, her and I.&nbsp;"She was fierce. That little girl never stopped. I have seen her go through multiple open heart surgeries and seen her get sick and just bounce right back."<figure>

 </figure>Although her heart condition restricted what she could do physically, she ran with the other kids and never quit, Julie said.Kaitlyn loved pink and blue and anything sparkly, so the organizers plan to decorate her Little Library using those themes."It just means a lot that not only do people sympathize with our situation, but they truly care and they just want to do anything to remember her and support us," Julie said through tears.&nbsp;"It has been really awesome to see that in our community — people we don't even know."Julie said it means so much that other children will benefit from this project.<figure>

You want people to see that strength and have that hope too," she said.Kaitlyn was referred to Parents as Teachers to help with development with her gross motor skills.Dayna Schmidt of Parents as Teachers came into the&nbsp;Cubillo home once a month, worked with Kaitlyn and helped guide Julie in activities that helped in Kaitlyn's development."It was a great experience," Julie said. "They always had really cute ideas on how to teach them. The things they needed to learn developmentally for their age and also to have someone coming in consistently to the home as a teacher to transition them into preschool. I think we both really enjoyed it."Having an adult to talk to the during the day was also a relief, as Julie spent a lot of time at home with Kaitlyn.The project's initial goal is to raise $370 to construct and place the Little Library.<figure>

Mom hopes Little Library will honor daughter's strength, inspire hope

The City of Hays and Fort Hays State University will celebrate Arbor Day 2021 on Thursday, April 22, at 12 p.m. on the FHSU Quad.

“Arbor Day is a time for people to come together and better our community by planting a tree and providing children from Wilson Elementary’s second grade class the opportunity to learn more about Arbor Day," said Teresa L. Clounch, chair of the FHSU Tree Campus Committee. After a year off, we look forward to gathering on the FHSU Quad, west of Picken Hall, for this year's event.

The annual Arbor Day Celebration will bring FHSU and the City of Hays together for a brief program that includes a proclamation, Tree City USA and Tree Campus USA recognition, a tree planting, and a tree tour of the FHSU Quad. The noon program will take place on the west side of Picken Hall towards the Memorial Union.&nbsp;

The Office of Student Engagement will hold an Earth Day Event later in the day. There will be educational and social Earth Day activities between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Activities will be set to accommodate social distancing.&nbsp;

FHSU and City of Hays celebrate 2021 Arbor Day

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.7 percent in March. This was a decrease from 3.8 percent in February and an increase from 3.2 percent in March 2020.

“Kansas has shown significant recovery, adding over 12,000 jobs in March, with eight of the major sectors contributing to that growth,” said Secretary Amber Shultz. “The unemployment rate also remained relatively low at 3.7 percent." 

The jobless rate in Ellis County again fell, from 2.7 percent in February to 2.4 percent in March. Graham County unemployment fell from 5.4 percent in February to 3.7 percent, still the highest for any northwest Kansas county. 

Seasonally adjusted job estimates indicate total Kansas nonfarm jobs increased by 12,800 from February. Private sector jobs, a subset of total nonfarm jobs, increased by 12,400 from the previous month, while government increased by 400.

“Kansas job growth accelerated in March,” said Labor Economist Emilie Doerksen. “Growth was widespread with five of the major sectors adding more than 1,000 jobs each. The largest gains were in construction as the industry rebounded following weather related declines in February."

Since March 2020, Kansas seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have declined by 48,900. This change is due to a decrease of 35,700 private sector jobs and 13,200 government jobs.

A couple of weeks ago, I shared the educational program in Great Bend titled, “Diabetes: You are in Control.” The statistics are mind boggling. Diabetes is a common, costly, and serious disease. More than 34 million adults in the United States have diabetes, and one in five of them do not know they have the disease. A diagnosis of diabetes can be scary, but studies have shown that with healthful eating and modest regular physical activity, type 2 diabetes can be delayed, controlled and even prevented.

Dining with Diabetes is a K-State Research and Extension health and wellness program that consists of a series of four classes that include, learning, demonstrations, physical activity and tasting healthy foods. The program’s focus is to help individuals learn strategies to lessen the health risks of diabetes.

The program objectives of this on-line course include:

Dining with Diabetes is a national extension program provided to Kansans by K-State Research and Extension Family and Consumer Sciences professionals and community health partners. The program is a series of four 2-hour classes that are held once a week. Classes consist of a presentation on diabetes self-care or healthful food choices; a five to ten-minute low-impact physical activity; presentations on tasty, healthy familiar foods, sampling foods, and demonstrations of cooking techniques using artificial sweeteners, reduced-fat foods, herbs, and spices.&nbsp;

The program is designed for people with diabetes and their family members, caregivers, and support persons.

Since this is an online format, participants can enroll in a class that meets their scheduling needs even if the facilitator is located across the state. I noticed that there are classes set to begin in May and June. The cost of the course is $25.

KRUG: Dining with diabetes online course available

The Hays Fire Department will be inspecting and flow testing fire hydrants on Monday in the area from Hall St. to Fort St. between 7th St. and 27th St., and also Vine St. to Canterbury Dr. between 27th St. and 22nd St. 

This is part of a coordinated effort by the city of Hays to inspect all fire hydrants in the city and flush all water mains annually. Inspecting fire hydrants ensures that the valves operate properly and that there is no damage or obstructions that will prevent or interfere with the prompt use of fire hydrants in an emergency. Firefighters are also checking the pressure and volume of water mains in each neighborhood for firefighting purposes. 

The associated flushing of water mains allows chlorine to be distributed throughout the system to eliminate bio-filming in the water mains. Slight discoloration of the water supply may be encountered although there will be no health risks to the consumer.

Wintery weather is predicted to return to northwest Kansas overnight Monday and into Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Dodge City.

There is 90 percent chance of precipitation overnight Monday, with the possibility of 1 to 3 inches of snow. Wind gusts are predicted to reach 36 mph.

The overnight low Monday is expected to dip to the mid-20s before skies clear Tuesday afternoon and evening.&nbsp;

Winter weather expected to return to NW Kan. early this week

Hays police officers gave a standing ovation Thursday night for their emergency dispatchers following Mayor Sandy Jacobs' proclamation celebrating National Public Safety Telecommunications Week in Hays.&nbsp;

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e08e31357544d3fe90e8708">The Hays Police Department has overseen the communications department since it was transferred back to HPD control at the end of 2019</a>. It&nbsp;continues to service law enforcement agencies in Ellis County along with fire departments and Ellis County EMS.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jacobs told the department employees who posed for pictures with city commissioners "this really was an honor to read."

"When I became mayor, I had tours of multiple [city departments]. And the most important tour I got was the dispatch area.

"I was so moved by the compassion, the skill set," Jacobs said. "I was amazed.&nbsp;

"Having been a citizen of Hays all these years, I really didn't understand. But I do now and you are very much appreciated."&nbsp;

The police department&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/3e3e5503-421b-40b9-8aeb-9308259c924f">celebrated its dispatchers</a> all last week.&nbsp;

🎥 MAYOR: 'Now I understand' after touring emergency dispatch center

Six rural Kansas locations were selected to host the traveling Smithsonian exhibition&nbsp;Crossroads: Change in Rural America.&nbsp;Other locations, including the Hays Public Library, were then selected by Humanities Kansas as partner sites&nbsp;responsible for creating their own displays and programming related to the&nbsp;Crossroads&nbsp;theme. The library’s exhibit will be on display May 1 through June 13, accompanied by a variety of programs.

In 1900, about 40% of Americans lived in rural areas, by 2010, less than 18% of the U.S. population lived in rural areas. In just over a century, massive economic and social changes moved millions of Americans into urban areas. Yet only 10% of the U.S. landmass is considered urban. Why should revitalizing the rural places left behind matter to those who remain, those who left, and those who will come in the future? Because there is much more to the story of rural America.

After careful consideration and visiting with various community members, the Hays Public Library reached the decision that the most pressing “crossroad” facing the area is water conservation. HPL is partnering with the Hays Water Department to present&nbsp;Crisis to Conservation to Conversation: A Hays Water Story, the display will explore three different time periods, the past, present, and future of Hays water issues.

Hays is unique in that it is the largest Kansas community without a reliable water supply. Community leaders and their citizens have stepped up to be water conservation leaders while planning for the stark realities of water security. This display and its corresponding programming will spark a conversation about Hays’ relationship with water and the community’s future. In addition to water-related content, this also will be an opportunity for the Hays community to have a larger conversation about rural America.&nbsp;

 </figure>HPLSix rural Kansas locations were selected to host the traveling Smithsonian exhibition&nbsp;Crossroads: Change in Rural America.&nbsp;Other locations, including the Hays Public Library, were then selected by Humanities Kansas as partner sites&nbsp;responsible for creating their own displays and programming related to the&nbsp;Crossroads&nbsp;theme. The library’s exhibit will be on display May 1 through June 13, accompanied by a variety of programs.In 1900, about 40% of Americans lived in rural areas, by 2010, less than 18% of the U.S. population lived in rural areas. In just over a century, massive economic and social changes moved millions of Americans into urban areas. Yet only 10% of the U.S. landmass is considered urban. Why should revitalizing the rural places left behind matter to those who remain, those who left, and those who will come in the future? Because there is much more to the story of rural America.After careful consideration and visiting with various community members, the Hays Public Library reached the decision that the most pressing “crossroad” facing the area is water conservation. HPL is partnering with the Hays Water Department to present&nbsp;Crisis to Conservation to Conversation: A Hays Water Story, the display will explore three different time periods, the past, present, and future of Hays water issues.Hays is unique in that it is the largest Kansas community without a reliable water supply. Community leaders and their citizens have stepped up to be water conservation leaders while planning for the stark realities of water security. This display and its corresponding programming will spark a conversation about Hays’ relationship with water and the community’s future. Hays library presents display chronicling 'Hays Water Story'

One of only three Native American members of the Kansas Legislature will visit Hays on April 23. Rep. Christina Haswood, D-Lawrence, will participate in a conversation at an outdoor barbecue with the Ellis County Democratic Party and the public from 4:45 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Downtown Hays Pavilion.

Later, at 7 p.m., she will appear on the Smoky Hills Public Television program “Kansas Legislature.”

At 26, the freshman representative is one of the youngest members of the Legislature.

“I have heard about the divide between rural and urban Kansas, and western and eastern Kansas, and I want to help bridge that divide,” she said. “Some issues are more of a concern to western Kansas, and as someone from eastern Kansas I want to help start the conversations about those issues.”

Elected in 2020, she won a three-way Democratic primary and then ran unopposed in the general election for Kansas House District 10. Her district&nbsp;encompasses southeast Douglas County, including southeastern Lawrence, all Baldwin City and portions of Eudora, Palmyra and Wakarusa townships.&nbsp;She is a member of the Health and Human Services, Agriculture, and Water committees and also serves on the Joint Committee on State-Tribal Relations.

She said that in her visit to Hays and her appearance on “Kansas Legislature,” she wants to talk about her work on water, health and human services, and agriculture.

She also wants to talk about the issues common to all Kansans – rural, urban, Democratic and Republican. For instance, “keeping Kansans in Kansas, keeping young people in Kansas, keeping talent in Kansas.”

“This is what makes me excited about getting out-of-district and having these conversations,” she said.

At her swearing-in on Jan. 12, Haswood honored her Navajo ancestry by wearing traditional Diné fashion that she created with her mother and her partner. Vogue magazine&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vogue.com/article/christina-haswood-kansas-representative-indigenous-regalia">featured her</a>&nbsp;and her fashion choice in an article the next day.

Though her ancestry is Arizona Navajo, she was born in Lawrence and has lived her entire life in the district she now represents. After graduating from Lawrence High School, she attended Haskell Indian Nations University, which is also in Lawrence, graduating with an associate degree in community health. She earned a bachelor's degree in public health from Arizona State University and a Master of Public Health from the University of Kansas School of Medicine.&nbsp;

Asked how a Navajo from the West came to live in Lawrence, Kansas, she laughed. “Blame my parents for that.”

Her father and mother were born and raised on the Arizona portion of Navajo Nation, which spans a large area in northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico and southeastern Utah. Her parents met at Haskell University, where her father played basketball.&nbsp;

“When they had me, they had a decision to make, whether to go back or stay in Lawrence. They grew up on the reservation, and they thought there were better opportunities for me in Lawrence.”

Haswood works for the University of Kansas as an agent for the Douglas County Covid Call Center.

Bills she has sponsored include creating a Kansas youth advisory council; increasing the minimum wage to $15 per hour over six years; abolishing the death penalty and creating the crime of aggravated murder; changing the designation of Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day; and providing for the attorney general to coordinate training for law enforcement agencies on missing and murdered indigenous people.&nbsp;

The barbecue will feature pulled pork sandwiches (wrapped individually), packaged chips and barbecue sauce, and bottled water.

A Neil Diamond Tribute is a broadway style production featuring 12-time Branson Show award winner Keith Allynn as he unveils the story of Diamond’s life through Diamond’s own songs. Quick change magic, a unique salute toe veterans and Diamond’s top hits round out this romantic comedy, making it a must see for audiences of all ages.

The St. Francis Community High School auditorium, 100 S. College, St. Francis, is venue for this Western Plains Arts Association show Sunday, April 25 at 3 p.m. CDT. Admission by WPAA season ticket or at the gate $10 adults, $5 students.

This project is generously funded by Mid-America Arts Alliance, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the state arts agencies of Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas.

A special grant was also given by the Dane G. Hansen Foundation of Logan, Kan.

Diamond look and sound alike Allynn began his career in stand-up comedy at the age of 14 opening for such greats as Chris Rock, Tim Allen and Robin Williams. At 21, Allynn discovered his musical talents while performing “All Shook Up” at a karaoke night. The girls went wild, and he was hooked. GOODLAND — Northwest Tech recently announced the launch of collegiate Women’s Wrestling at the college, with competition beginning in the Fall of 2021. The move comes following a decision at the March board meeting as the college works to strengthen enrollment and increase female student-athletes on campus.&nbsp;

“We have discussed adding the program for a few years, but with the recent decision by the NJCAA to recognize women’s wrestling as an emerging sport the timing was right to make the move,” said Athletic Director Rory Kling.

Northwest Tech is no stranger to women’s wrestling, as it was a club sport during the 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 academic years. “We are excited to bring the program back and provide an additional opportunity for student-athletes to earn a degree in a high-demand and high-wage field of study,” said Kling.

Women’s wrestling is on the rise all across the country. According to the National Wrestling Coaches Association website, the number of women wrestling at the high school level has grown from 804 athletes in 1994 to well over 21,124 by 2019 – and that was as of two years ago. Even while participation has increased, opportunities for female wrestlers in Kansas to compete at the collegiate level in-state are few and far between. According to the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association website, there are only five private NAIA colleges and universities in Kansas with women’s wrestling. “High school programs have grown rapidly in Kansas and all around the Midwest,” said Northwest Tech President Ben Schears. “This is an opportunity for us to be among the first in the state to meet the growing demand and provide an equal opportunity to compete.”

The creation of the women’s program will be a great addition to a highly successful NJCAA Men’s Wrestling program at Northwest Tech. The men’s program is currently ranked 9th in the nation and has already produced three national champions, eleven All-Americans, and has several nationally-ranked wrestlers heading to the national competition in late April. “We want to see the same success, talent, and skill with our women’s program as we have with our men’s program,” said Wrestling Head Coach Chris Guillot. “Our goal is to develop high-quality student-athletes in the classroom and on the mat.”
