Concrete repairs begin to 500 block of E. 20th Street

Tuesday afternoon the office of Fort Hays State University Student Engagement hosted the Summer Splash, bringing the community together for a variety of events on the University quad.

During the festivities, children young and old had fun gathering together in sun and shade for activities like super-sized twister, a water bounce house and many other engaging, often water soaked, activities.&nbsp;

Community beats the heat with Summer Splash

The former voice of the Fort Hays State Tigers and Kansas Jayhawks in addition to Kansas City Royals broadcaster, Bob Davis, will be in Hays Saturday for a book signing at the Golden Q.

Davis teamed up with Hays native Jeff Bollig to write "The Dream is Real, My Life on the Airwaves."

Books will be available for purchase at the Golden Q for $20 or you can bring your own copy and get it signed by Davis who started his award winning broadcasting career in Hays.

By JACKIE MUNDT Pratt County farmer and rancher One of the hardest parts about making a new life in Kansas for me has been missing so much of my old life in Wisconsin. In my early years as a Kansan, I longed for things here to feel more like home. Over time my appreciation for Kansas has grown, and it has begun to feel like home to me. I didn’t realize until recently that the trade-off for this connection and comfort to my new home state was made possible by drifting further from my old one. Since I left for college more than 15 years ago, I always managed to make a handful of trips home each year. With COVID, my visits were limited, and the time between felt somehow longer. Over the Fourth of July holiday, I returned to my childhood home for a visit. As I drove into town around midnight, I felt tired from the 12-hour trek, but I kept blinking my eyes because everything seemed strange. Things felt smaller — the buildings, the distance between streets. Trees and other vegetation seemed bigger, like they were swallowing up the road. The pavement seemed to be faded and cracked in a way I had never noticed before. Barns and sheds I swear were in good shape the last time I drove by are falling down. &nbsp; For a few days, it was like having a surreal dream in which I knew the places, people and sites around me but they were all somehow slightly foreign to me. On my trip home, I was thinking about why things had felt so different and a light bulb went off in my head. The place where I grew up was no longer mine. The nostalgia of our childhoods is powerful. These places grew us, and it can devastating to lose the physical connection to them.&nbsp; A person can know that the home of a long-gone, beloved relative has been demolished and still have their heart skip a beat when they see the reality replacing the faded memory. Alumni can be aware of a school merger changing the name, mascots and colors but not realize how bizarre it will feel to see a new team playing on the same field they once occupied. It was a bittersweet recognition I am an outsider in my hometown. My parents’ home will always be my childhood home, but it is no longer my home. The town is full of people and places that evoke fond memories and have a special place in my heart, but I am no longer a part of their community. When we no longer own these places, it can be hard for our hearts to let go because there was too much life played out in these spaces. My realization actually gave me comfort because it reminded me how fortunate I am to have found a new home that I love. Letting my mental allegiance shift from my childhood hometown to my forever hometown has create the room in my life to make a full commitment to the life I am living here in Kansas. To make the most of my new home, I am going to do my best to be present and cherish everyday moments with people that make me feel at home. Take pictures of the special things I want to remember for years to come. And depart your everyday places with a grateful heart because it could be your last visit, and there really is no place like home.

Each firefighter understands they represent a larger ECFD organization and shall act, train, perform duties in such a way that they demonstrate pride and ownership in their department. An ECFD firefighter should have excellent interpersonal communication skills as they are expected to have direct contact with different public safety officials, the community, as well as fire and rescue victims. ECFD firefighters must be able to make quick decisions, take calculated risks, and take immediate actions on emergency scenes while maintaining safety in these actions.

Firefighters are required to complete basic NIMS courses, maintain CPR/First aid certification, hazardous materials awareness, attend 75% of scheduled monthly trainings, and report to their assigned companies when available for emergency responses. ECFD firefighters must read, understand, and abide by the ECFD standard operating procedures. Before firefighters are able to respond and/or drive apparatus to emergencies, firefighters are to complete an in-house training program. State Fair ride packages on sale now

An electrical fire is believed to be the cause of a fire Monday
afternoon on the west edge of Hays damaged the combine and burn wheat stubble.

According to Ellis County Fire Chief Darin Myers, crews were
dispatched to the 700 block of Butterfield Trail for the report of a combine on
fire just after 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Myers said the owner of the 2008 Case IH 8010 found the electrical
fire and was able to put it out quickly, limiting the damage to the combine.

Less than an acre of wheat stubble burned before crews put
it out. They also checked over the combine.

Crews were on scene for less than an hour, according to
Myers.

Myers said this was one of the first farm-related fires they
have responded to this year.

Combine sustains minor damage in Monday fire in Ellis Co.

Maggie Brull, who will be a high school senior this fall at Thomas More Prep-Marian, has been selected as the Kansas Youth Spokesperson for the Kansas Electric Cooperatives.&nbsp;

Brull will give a speech to approximately 250 electric cooperative board members, managers, and key staff at the KEC Summer Meeting in Overland Park on Aug. 2.&nbsp;

Brull was selected for this honor through her participation in the Kansas Electric Youth Leadership Conference. She was sponsored for this exclusive virtual program by Western Cooperative Electric.&nbsp;

“I thought it would be a great leadership opportunity to represent the students who were selected for the KEY Leadership Conference,” Brull said. “This conference has taught me that people come from a lot of different places in life, and co-ops serve everyone no matter what your place in life is. TMP-M student to represent state at Kansas Electric Cooperatives meeting

DODGE CITY — From his Angus ranch amid the South Dakota prairie, Troy Hadrick still recites the valuable lesson he learned the hard way two decades ago.

“Sometimes, the only person you can trust to tell your story is yourself,” Hadrick said.

It’s been 20 years since he and his wife, Stacy, sat at their kitchen table with journalist Michael Pollan for a story on the beef industry—a moment that would forever change the couple’s outlook and objective. Pollan told them he wanted to write a positive story about how a steak starts at the ranch and ends up on a dinner plate.

And the Hadricks, fifth-generation ranchers, were excited to share their passion for raising livestock and the hard work they put into the profession.

Most in the industry know the rest of the tale. Pollan's New York Times story “Power Steer” focused on the writer’s own agenda—depicting the cattle industry as inhumane with no regard for the environment.

It would have been easy to never speak out again after such an experience, Troy Hadrick said. But with Pollan publishing a book and appearing on Oprah, the Hadricks realized the other side of the story needed to be shared. Doing so has taken them on a public speaking journey across the world—sharing their experience while helping other producers find their voice.

The Hadricks will talk about how producers can effectively tell their narrative through conversation, application and experience at High Plains Journal’s annual Cattle U and Trade Show event, slated for July 29 to 30 in Dodge City, Kansas. The couple will be among the event’s keynote sessions—which feature industry leaders like “Yellowstone” actor Forrie J. Smith and award-winning radio broadcaster Lane Nordlund.

“Ranchers need to find their niche and what works in their area and then take some of those ideas and craft them into their own,” Troy Hadrick said. “And, they need to make it personal. One thing that never changes is the fact that personal stories have the most impact on people.”

Keynote conversations from behind the mic

After hosting virtual events in 2020 due to the pandemic, HPJ will return to live, in-person events starting with Cattle U and Trade Show at the United Wireless Arena. The program will feature keynote speakers each day, breakout sessions, a trade show and a special social event where attendees can meet some of the speakers.

Sessions will focus on a variety of topics, including animal health, feed and nutrition, genomics, ranch profitability, marketing and more. A trade show also will run concurrent to the event.

Broadcaster Nordlund, a sixth-generation Montana rancher, will give a keynote session plus emcee the event. Nordlund said he will share his unique view as an agricultural communicator and rancher, offering insights on the conversations he has from behind the microphone.

That includes how he juggles broadcasting and ranching. A typical day might start with a 3:30 a.m. radio taping and end with cattle branding.

TV viewers can tune in to find Nordlund reporting on the Montana Ag Network, which airs on the Montana Television Network. His voice can also be heard on several podcasts and radio programs. He co-anchors the Western Ag Network reports aired on more than 60 radio stations in six western states. He hosts “Montana Talks Ag,” a segment broadcast during the statewide “Montana Talks” radio show. He is also a contributor for “Cattlemen to Cattlemen,” “Market Day Report '' and “Rural Evening News” RFD-TV television programs.

Nordlund said he would also talk about the current agriculture climate and market trends.

“Events like this help producers keep an open mind and learn from industry stakeholders,” Nordlund said.

While Yellowstone may be a fictional television show about ranchers, one of its stars, Smith, is the real McCoy.

Smith, most known for his role as Lloyd Pierce on the Paramount Network hit show, is a seasoned cowboy and former bronc rider. He got his start in Hollywood more than 30 years ago—picking up bit parts as a stunt rider and wrangler on movie sets.

He landed the role in Yellowstone, alongside veteran actor Kevin Costner, in 2018.

"I am excited to get to thank the farmers and ranchers in person for feeding America and all the hardships they experience," Smith said.

Smith will highlight his life’s story, which includes being raised on his grandparents' cow-calf operation. By age 8, he was competing in rodeos, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He credits rodeo for helping him to get his start in Hollywood. &nbsp;

Smith said he will encourage attendees to never give up and keep pushing forward—even when life offers up challenges.

"I always say, ‘you quit learning, you quit living,’” he said. “Education is something that can't be taken away from you. Once you learn something, you have it forever and the more you know about whatever you are doing, the better you'll be at it."

The hallmark of HPJ’s Cattle U and Trade Show is the information shared by industry leaders. Nearly 25 speakers—including university professors, veterinarians and fellow ranchers—will share their secrets to building the most profitable operation, whether it is cow-calf, stocker, feeder or dairy enterprise.

For instance, Rosslyn Biggs, the beef cattle Extension specialist and director of Continuing Education for Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine, will talk about how successful cattle programs utilize veterinarians on their team to help monitor the nutrition and health of their herds.

However, the need for rural veterinarians continues to grow, Biggs said.

Biggs said OSU received a federal grant two years ago that helped launch the Integrated Beef Cattle Program to bring awareness and enhance veterinary practices and services in the state. Oklahoma has 1.6 million beef cows, yet many areas lack the veterinarians necessary to service the cattle operations. Part of the grant evaluated the shortage and geographic range of veterinarians in Oklahoma. Biggs will go over survey results during her presentation.

She said veterinarians and producers must be team members to produce top-quality beef.

“For rural veterinarians to be successful, they must have the support of those in their practice areas,” she said. “Producers are leaders in their communities, and it is critical that they establish strong relationships with their veterinary team.”

Other speakers will talk about topics such as cattle health, nutrition, marketing and traceability.

• Meredyth Jones, a doctor of veterinary medicine at Oklahoma State University, will talk about detecting foot disease in cattle.

• Scott Blubaugh, president of American Farmers &amp; Ranchers/Oklahoma Farmers Union Cooperative, will discuss Oklahoma Certified, a marketing opportunity that blossomed amid the pandemic as more consumers wanted to know where their food comes from.

• Callahan Grund, executive director of U.S. CattleTrace, will discuss the unique opportunity that producers have to create an animal disease traceability program that works for all sectors of the industry.

• Juan Velez, chief agricultural officer, Aurora Organic Dairy, will talk about how to create a ranch culture that promotes animal welfare.

Clay Mathis, director of the King Ranch Institute for Ranch Management at Texas A&amp;M University-Kingsville, said he will focus on profit drivers and the decision-making tools producers should use that lead to successful—and profitable—cow-calf productions.

Producers should understand their fixed and variable costs and how one more cow or one less cow can affect the bottom line, he said.

“It’s not just about maximizing cow-calf profits,” Mathis said. “But instead, it’s about optimizing cow-calf profits so that when you optimize all the enterprises on the ranch at the same time, you maximize ranch profits as a whole.”

“The key takeaway is, how do we make the decisions we make, how do we get focused on the right decisions for long-term profitability. You need knowledge of what matters and the tools to make those decisions well. It doesn’t matter if you have 50 cows or 20,000. The big decisions are the same, it is just where the decimal lands.”

Two speaker panels—one featuring successful cattlewomen and another marketing experts—will also anchor both days of Cattle U and Trade Show.

The marketing panel on day two includes Jerry Nine, a rancher, HPJ columnist and sale barn owner; Corbitt Wall, DV Auction commercial cattle manager and Feeder Flash market summary host; John Campbell, who has been with Winter Livestock for more than 40 years; and Arlen “Bim” Nelson, a cattle order buyer from Nebraska who works for farmer-feeders across the Midwest.

Day one’s cattlewomen panel features a diverse group of leaders from across the region.

• Courtenay DeHoff, a cowgirl turned television personality—grabbing the attention of Deadspin, The Huffington Post, LIVE! With Kelly and more. Through storytelling and fashion, Fancy Lady Cowgirl is working to bridge the gap between urban and rural cultures.

• Tara Vander Dussen, environmental scientist has a dairy farm with her husband, Daniel. She serves on state and national livestock boards and advocates for dairy farming by sharing her story on her New Mexico Milkmaid blog.

• Trista Brown Priest, CEO of Cattle Empire, is the third generation in the family feedlot near Satanta, Kansas. She has worked in different capacities at the feed yard since she was 14 years old.

• Jan Lyons is the owner and founder of Lyons Ranch near Manhattan. The ranch, now in its third generation, had its 32nd annual bull sale this year.

Biggs also will speak as part of the panel.

“I’m a second-generation veterinarian,” Biggs said. “My mother graduated from Oklahoma State in 1978. I’m very passionate about the interconnectedness of cattlemen and veterinarians, and I think we can all do a better job to improve those relationships because, at the end of the day, we are reliant upon each other for success.”

Cattle industry at center stage at upcoming live show

HUTCHINSON —&nbsp;Sixteen new law enforcement officers, including one from Hays, graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center on July 2 at a ceremony held in KLETC’s Integrity Auditorium.

Officer Jonathon Davis of the Altamont Police Department was the graduating class president. The speaker for the ceremony was Finney County Sheriff Kevin Bascue. Mike Satterlee, KLETC senior instructor of police, was the class coordinator for the 280th Basic Training Class.

Davis and fellow officer Christopher Moyer as well as deputies Sarah Howard, Jesse McOwen and Austin Tillman walked, ran or biked more than 200 miles during their time at KLETC and exceeded the other physical requirements of the 200 Mile Club, including push-ups, sit-ups and a timed run. Moyer was singled out during the ceremony for having run more miles than any other student in the 280th. McOwen was honored as the student with the most improved fitness since the beginning of basic training. Spencer Medina from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks was recognized during the ceremony for his firearms proficiency as the class “Top Shot.”

Graduates receive certificates of course completion from KLETC and Kansas law enforcement certification from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority. The training course fulfills the state requirement for law enforcement training. Classroom lectures and hands-on applications help train officers to solve the increasingly complex problems they face in the line of duty.

Established by the Kansas Legislature in 1968, KLETC trains the majority of municipal, county and state law enforcement officers in Kansas and oversees the training of the remaining officers at seven authorized and certified academy programs operated by local law enforcement agencies and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The graduates, who began their training in March 2021, represented 13 municipal, county, and state law enforcement agencies from across Kansas.

announcing that an asphalt overlay project will take place between Butterfield
Trail and Spring Hill Road. 

The 800, 900 and 1000 blocks of 240th Avenue
between Butterfield Trail and Spring Hill Road will be closed to through
traffic as the project progresses. 

This project will begin at 7:30 a.m. on
Monday in the 800 block of 240th Avenue and will open and close as
the project progresses to the north. The estimated completion date is July
16, pending weather conditions. 

Motorists traveling in the affected closure
area should use alternate routes of travel until the project is completed.

Asphalt overlay to begin Monday on portion of 240th Avenue

GREAT BEND — Barton Natural Gas Instructor Shawgi Ahmed worked for the Ministry of Oil in Sudan for 16 years as a Senior Project Engineer until his passion for education brought him all the way to the center of the United States to share his knowledge in 2019. He holds a wealth of experience in the field and a doctorate in petroleum engineering. He is a skilled researcher and several of his articles have been published, but teaching is what truly inspires him. “I love to teach students and empower them to advance professionally throughout their prospective careers, which can enable them to have a better quality of life,” he said. “Ultimately, this provides me more pride than anything else I do.”&nbsp; Ahmed said Natural Gas is a vital part of the energy infrastructure for the world and there is a plethora of jobs available right now and beyond.

“The dependency of the energy global market on natural gas is growing,” he said. “Unlike other fuels such as coal and oil, natural gas is clean energy (less CO2 emission), has a lower and more stable price and can be easily transported. The natural gas supply chain includes different business lines, such as production, processing, transportation, storage facilities, and measurement (metering) systems. Therefore, gas companies are always looking for technicians that have knowledge in those areas.”

Ahmed said that finding jobs for his students is his top priority and that there are many. A career in natural gas can be lucrative with starting salaries in some positions fetching up to $50,000 annually or more and said the in-depth and hands-on nature of Barton’s program is rare.&nbsp; “The natural gas program at Barton is designed to provide students with immense knowledge and hands-on skills that can help them to find jobs,” he said. “It is worth mentioning that some of the gas companies continually send us opening positions for gas technicians and operators.”

Ahmed has recently had articles published about best practices for maintaining the integrity of storage containers and transmission systems integrity so that natural gas can be stocked and moved safely and in an environmentally friendly way. He said it is important to him to contribute to the academic community surrounding natural gas and energy so that we may continue to utilize them as a resource in society and he enjoys the dialogue of education at all levels, not just in the classroom.

His most recent published articles are titled “Failure Mechanisms of the Wellbore Mechanical Barrier Systems: Implications for Well Integrity” and “Performance Evaluation of Liner Dual Barrier System in CO2 -rich Geothermal Wells.” “My research provides the reader with invaluable information regarding the existing knowledge gaps and limitations of current industry standards and regulatory guidelines,” he said. “The objective of this article is to minimize the risk of failure in the oil and gas wells and to elevate the safety level.”

Natural gas instructor travels from Sudan to share his knowledge

High Plains Mental Health Center is pleased to announce it has received funding to implement Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic services. A $2 million, two-year grant from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration will enable HPMHC to significantly expand regional access to behavioral health and substance use disorder services.&nbsp;

“This is great news for Northwest Kansas. Our communities have been telling us they see a need for additional mental health and substance use treatment and resource options, and this funding and enhanced program status will enable us to fill some of the existing rural service gaps,” said Walt Hill, executive director of HPMHC. “This also comes at an ideal time, as we know the Covid-19 pandemic already has and will continue to increase mental health concerns.”

The CCBHC grant project will include several key program areas, which will be implemented within four months of the award. Significant goals will be to provide enhanced and more rapid access to services for clients who need to enter services and reach out for initial assessment. HPMHC will contract with two additional qualified mental health professionals who will assist with screening and referral via telemedicine. We will also hire two client care coordinators/navigators, who will assist new clients entering services and also help coordinate care for established clients.

HPMHC also will significantly expand its existing treatment program for clients with Substance Use Disorders. We will contract with a telemedicine psychiatrist to provide Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for clients in recovery who could benefit from prescribed medication in addition to therapy. MAT is primarily used to treat those in recovery from addiction to certain opioids, such as heroin or prescribed pain pills. The prescribed medication operates to normalize brain chemistry, block the euphoric effects of the opioids, relieve physical cravings and normalize body functions. HPMHC will also hire two additional SUD counselors and a peer recovery coach to further expand recovery services. Mental illness often co-occurs with substance use disorders; expanded SUD services will equip HPMHC staff to further integrate care and specialize treatment based on each client’s needs.

We will also increase our integrated physical health care efforts by placing two additional outpatient therapists at integrated care locations, such as regional hospitals or primary healthcare clinics. We will also expand an existing “health home” service program for clients with Serious Mental Illness and increase screening for high-risk illnesses, such as HIV, hepatitis and tuberculosis. HPMHC staff will work with regional healthcare providers to make referrals for those needing primary services.

The CCBHC implementation project will also create an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) outreach team, an evidence-based intensive and integrated approach to community mental health services. This team will provide outreach services in the community and will include one registered nurse, two case managers, a peer support specialist and an additional qualified mental health professional. This team will work within the community to help stabilize individuals experiencing mental health crises in efforts to help the individual access services and deter hospitalization. While this innovative program will initially be launched in Hays (the region’s most populous city), HPMHC hopes to eventually expand this service and provide enhanced crisis response services throughout the region, either by telemedicine or on-site.

There also will be an enhanced focus on public outreach and education, with emphasis placed on high-risk and underserved populations, including military veterans, regional farm/agriculture workers and Hispanic/Latino populations. An additional Mental Health First Aid instructor will be added to HPMHC’s existing staff team of three trainers. Additional professional development training will be made available to HPMHC staff, including trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy. An advisory work group will be established to provide input and guidance regarding CCBHC implementation. This group will include clients with lived experience or their loved ones/support persons and county stakeholders. Applications are being accepted for the CCBHC work group. The CCBHC model of care was approved in the state of Kansas this spring, making Kansas the first state to pass legislation identifying this model as a solution to the current mental health and substance use crisis. The CCBHC model, however, is not new –&nbsp; the U.S. currently has 340 CCBHCs operating in 40 states. Several other Community Mental Health Centers in Kansas already have received or are working toward CCBHC status. CCBHCs are designed to address suicide prevention, overdose deaths, barriers to timely treatment access, inadequate care for veterans and active military, and to reduce existing burdens on jails and hospital emergency departments.&nbsp;

On Monday, Morgan Brothers Construction will begin replacing select areas of 18th Street pavement between Milner and Vine streets. &nbsp;The street will remain open to traffic with some areas coned off. &nbsp;

After hearing from several friends recently about pest problems they have, this story from my youth comes to mind. Given society’s current penchant for looking at problems through emotional eyes only, I’ll probably get roasted for this one, but here goes anyway.

&nbsp;Amongst all its other merits, high school FFA was OK in my book because we had pest hunts! Pest hunts started in the fall and ran for a couple months. We divided into teams of four or five and for those couple months killed all the pests we could kill. Everything had a point value; starlings and blackbirds were two points each, pigeons were five and so on and so forth, and it was a simple competition to see which team could accumulate the most points by the end of the time period. As proof of “capture,” the heads of all birds were kept, and the tails were kept from mice, rats, possums’ and most everything else. And since all “trophies” were accumulated until the contest was over, they naturally had to be housed in the freezer. And since most folks only had one freezer back then, it was the same freezer where all the frozen meat, vegetables and fruit were kept. Yup, more than once I remember mom screamin’ my name in capital letters when she came up with a bag full of bird heads or possum tails instead of the frozen corn or hamburgers she was after.

The pest hunting game plan was fairly straightforward. We were all farm kids, so mice and rats were killed as we saw them around the barn. We were also hunters and trappers so possums were found squashed along the road or caught in our coon’ traps. Bird hunting gigs were the trickiest. Most barns where I grew up were three or four stories tall with hay lofts on each end. There was always a window high in each end of the barn with a ladder running up the inside wall to the window. One hunter would climb each ladder up to the window, turn around and prepare to swat birds as they headed toward the window, all the while somehow holding onto the ladder for dear life. Now that doesn’t sound all that dangerous, but here’s the thing; it was all done in the dead of night.&nbsp;

Here’s how the process worked. Our team would quietly converge on a barn around 10pm or so. (Of the whole process, the “quietly” part was the toughest.) Remember this was winter so everyone was dressed in old army jackets and mud boots, except the designated “swatters” for that night’s offensive, who had to dress warmly but in clothing that fit loosely around the shoulders so as not to impede their swing once they got into place at the top of the ladders. Clubs for the battle ranged from top-of-the-line gear like tennis or badminton rackets to more simple weapons like a scrap board with a handle nailed to it. Once the climbing swatters were inserted and in place, the rest of the militia on the floor would turn on lights and make as much noise as possible, attempting to roust any birds roosted inside, which would inevitably head for the windows, now guarded by the “swatters.”&nbsp; Snipers (with pellet guns) would begin picking off any drowsy birds still clinging to their perches after the melee started.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, at the tops of the ladders startled birds were flying into a trap, and the action could be fast and furious as flustered birds of all shapes and sizes tried to fly out the windows, and Heaven help you if one of those birds was an owl, which we obviously did not swat, but that would ring your bell if they flew into you. For starters, you only had one hand available to swat as the other was rather busy holding onto an old rickety ladder that you hoped would not crumble into pieces and dump you into the hay below. These were still the days of small square bales of hay and straw which might have been only a few feet below you, or twenty feet below you depending on how much the farmer had used already. It was still pretty dark up there and with birds often coming at you several at a time, it was impossible to swat them all. The ones you missed either flew around, coming back for a second try, or just hit you in the face from the get-go. In the midst of the assault, it could be raining dead bird carcasses down on the floor and it wasn’t out of the question to get “beaned” with the corpse of a deceased pigeon of starling if you were down there. We always tried to make sure the guys on the ground with the pellet guns were the most even-tempered of the group, thereby lessening the chance that one of the swatters would get shot in the butt for inadvertently beaning someone with a bird cadaver. After all forms of pest-life seemed to be vanquished from a barn, out came the flashlights and it was time to collect the spoils, leaving the neighborhood barn cats quite a feast indeed for allowing us to invade their territory.

&nbsp;How many times have you looked back upon crazy things you did as a kid and wondered how in blazes you ever survived past the age of nine? Every time I drive past a tall barn with windows in each end, I stare up at the windows and ask myself “Did we really used to do that?” Well, I’ve lived well past the age of nine and another part of me has to wonder if the world would be a better place today if we just had more pest hunts.

We always tried to make sure the guys on the ground with the pellet guns were the most even-tempered of the group, thereby lessening the chance that one of the swatters would get shot in the butt for inadvertently beaning someone with a bird cadaver. After all forms of pest-life seemed to be vanquished from a barn, out came the flashlights and it was time to collect the spoils, leaving the neighborhood barn cats quite a feast indeed for allowing us to invade their territory.&nbsp;How many times have you looked back upon crazy things you did as a kid and wondered how in blazes you ever survived past the age of nine? Every time I drive past a tall barn with windows in each end, I stare up at the windows and ask myself “Did we really used to do that?” Well, I’ve lived well past the age of nine and another part of me has to wonder if the world would be a better place today if we just had more pest hunts. Exploring Outdoors Kansas: Oh, for pest hunts again!

For the 74th&nbsp;consecutive year, the High Plains Music Camp will offer students the opportunity to work with a wide range of outstanding musicians from across the country. Beginning on Sunday, July 11, Fort Hays State University’s High Plains Music Camp&nbsp;will host a wide range of musical concerts and performances, all open to the public and free of charge.

Performances will include the 35th&nbsp;Infantry Band (Kansas Army National Guard), the Camper Honor Recital, Faculty Strings and Faculty Band, and scenes from&nbsp;Camelot&nbsp;plus additional camper and faculty ensembles.&nbsp;

The week culminates on Saturday, with the collective camp ensembles beginning at 9:00 am and taking place throughout the day. Concurrent events will be held in the Felten-Start Theatre in Malloy Hall and the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center in the morning, while all afternoon performances will be in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.
