HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs scored two more defensive
touchdowns as they picked up their first playoff win since 2002 Friday night in
a 42-18 win over Minneapolis.

It took the Monarchs (7-2) a little bit to get going on Friday night.
Their only two drives in the first quarter showed promise, both reached inside
the Lions’ 40-yardline, but penalties doomed the first one and an inception at
the goal line ended the second one.

With the game tied at zero the Monarchs defense would get
the scoring started. 

After the TMP interception Kenton Ginther tipped a pass at
the 20-yardline and hauled it in and returned the interception for a touchdown,
the first of his career. Ginther also caught the two-point conversion pass to
put TMP up 8-0.

Three plays later Jace Wentling hauled in his sixth career
touchdown and returned for a touchdown, the third of his career on defense, to
put the Monarchs up 15-0 with just over 3:30 to play in the first quarter.

In the last two years TMP has scored eight touchdowns on defense, four this year.

After the defense led the way in the first quarter, the
offense found its rhythm in the second quarter.

Midway through the second-quarter quarterback Kade Harris
hooked up with Mark Rack for a 57-yard touchdown pass giving TMP a 22-0 lead.

A little more than five and a half minutes later the Monarchs
scored again through the air. This time it was Wentling turning in a shallow
crossing route into a 41-yard touchdown putting TMP up 29-0.

The first half came to a bizarre end with a Minneapolis (4-5) player
was called for a person foul and ejected for targeting and as the teams were
leaving the field the Minneapolis coach got an unsportsmanlike penalty. 

As a result of the penalties TMP kicked off from the
Minneapolis 30-yardline.

Minneapolis was forced to punt after starting deep in their
own territory.

The Monarchs wasted no time to get the offense going in the
second half when Andrew Schwartz scored from 19 yards out to put TMP up 36-0
with just over seven minutes left in the third quarter.

Griffin Schumacher added a 19-yard touchdown less than a
minute into the fourth quarter to put up 42-0.

In the second-half of the fourth quarter Minneapolis was
able to score three touchdowns, two throw the air and one on the ground after
the game was well in hand.

Harris was three-for-four for 106 yards passing with two
touchdowns and an interception.

TMP will travel to Hoisington next Friday for a second-round
matchup with the Cardinals.

ROOKS COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 11p.m. Thursday in Rooks County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2002 Chevy Tahoe driven by&nbsp; Cordell Anthony Stover, 35, Cambridge, Nebraska, was&nbsp; northbound on U.S. 183 three miles north of K-18.

The driver&nbsp; lost control of the SUV. It crossed over the southbound lanes, entered the west ditch, struck the farm entrance to a field, went airborne, rolled and the driver was ejected from the vehicle.

EMS transported Stover to the hospital in Plainville. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Man hospitalized after ejected when SUV rolls

A Norton resident faces rape and sexual exploitation of a child charges after an arrest earlier this week.

The Phillips County Sheriff's office Friday announced David C. Alexander, 19, was arrested at a residence in Agra at approximately noon Tuesday, following an investigation into an alleged rape that had been reported the previous week. 

Alexander was arrested on suspicion of rape, aggravated indecent liberties with a child 14 to 16 years of age, blackmail, sexual exploitation of a child, fondling a child, distribution of marijuana, and aggravated intimidation of  a witness/victim, the department said. He is being held on a $250,000 bond.

During his detention, Alexander allegedly attacked a deputy, leading to charges of&nbsp;aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and attempted aggravated escape from custody being sought.

"The deputy received minor injuries and Alexander was transferred to a more secure facility," the department said.

The department also reminded the public "all persons are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law."

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Friday reported 17 new COVID-19 cases in Ellis County had been identified since Wednesday.

As of Friday morning, HaysMed reported 14 COVID-19 inpatients, down from 20 on Wednesday.

The KDHE reported Wednesday 52 percent of eligible Ellis County residents are fully vaccinated, noting the vaccination rate for the eligible Kansas population (12 and older) is approximately 63 percent.

Since reporting began, there have been 4,586 cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County, including 76 coronavirus-related deaths.

While clear skies and a high of 70 are expected Saturday, a cold air mass will push into western Kansas beginning Sunday — and bring a chance of snow along with it.

The National Weather Service in Dodge City is predicting a 30 percent chance of rain turning to snow beginning Sunday night, when the low temperature will hover around the freezing point.

On Monday, a high temperature of 42 is predicted, along with another chance of mixed rain and snow, which will continue into Wednesday.

Local sales tax receipts, which make up the biggest portion of the city of Hays' general fund, continue to see growth in 2021 as compared to the major slowdown last year due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.

General fund sales tax collections in September were at $796,459, a "very nice 23 percent increase, as compared to last year,"&nbsp;Kim Rupp, finance director, reported to city commissioners Thursday night.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"[Overall] revenues in September totaled $3.5 million, an increase of $514,630 compared to the same&nbsp;period as last year."&nbsp;

The local alcoholic liquor tax is rebounding and up $69,000 year-to-date from this time&nbsp;last year.

People are returning to now-open bars and restaurants and purchasing alcoholic drinks. A portion of that local alcoholic sales tax, along with the liquor and beer purchased at grocery stores and liquor stores, helps fund local non-profit groups appealing for funding from the Hays CARE Council. 

Another indicator of returning normalcy is a marked increase in water consumption by local businesses, up 18 percent month-to-date as more employees go back to their workplaces in person.

Perhaps most indicative of a return to business as usual in Hays is the 96 percent increase in accommodations the past quarter.

Food services were also up 33 percent while electronic shopping (with local taxes for online purchases) was up 31 percent this quarter.&nbsp;

* Approved the 2022 health insurance plan for city employees as recommended by Erin Giebler, human resources manager. The city will return from a self-funded policy to a less expensive fully-insured policy from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas. "[Employees] won't notice any difference" in their coverage or costs, according to Giebler.

* Adopted a resolution approving agreements between the city and Trego County Rural Water District #2 (RWD #2) to acquire four existing RWD #2 customers (Doonan Peterbilt, Randy L. Davis and Mary E. Davis private residence, Celebration Community Church, and Hays City Sportsman Club), along with some infrastructure as part of the improvements to 230th Avenue north of Interstate 70 Exit 157.

* Adopted a resolution for a Dec. 9 public hearing on the establishment of an RHID (Rural Housing Improvement District) for redevelopment of the historic St. Joseph’s School,&nbsp;210 W. 13th, into a multifamily residential complex targeting&nbsp;moderate income tenants.

* Approved the low bid of $34,100 from Paul Wertenberger Construction, Hays to build a new reuse pump house structure over the west basin at the Water Reclamation and Reuse Facility,&nbsp;

* Heard a progress report of activities and projects by various city departments from Collin Bielser, asst. city manager.

* Heard highlights of upcoming holiday events in Hays from Melissa Dixon, Convention and Visitors Bureau executive director.

Mayor Sandy Jacobs was absent from Thursday's meeting which was conducted by Mason Ruder, vice mayor.&nbsp;

🎥 'Very nice increase' in local sales tax collections, says Hays Finance Director

The nationally-ranked massage therapy program at Fort Hays State University offers numerous opportunities for students, whether they’re just starting school or coming back to continue their education. And, the program has now relocated to the lower floor of the Memorial Union in Room 045. &nbsp;

“The opportunity to have a permanent space for the massage therapy program is super exciting on many levels,” said Ceena Owens, director of massage therapy at FHSU.&nbsp;

“We will have a ‘real’ classroom to use for recruiting purposes and tours for students in an amazing hands-on setting,” Owens said. “Having a permanent classroom space will allow the program to possibly start integrating with other FHSU programs – such as the spa facility and destination management course within the tourism and hospitality degree program in the Department of Applied Business Studies.”&nbsp;

FHSU's massage therapy program is a member of the Associated Bodywork &amp; Massage Professionals (ABMP) national organization and the (AMTA) American Massage Therapy Association.&nbsp;Students can pursue an Associate of General Studies with a massage therapy emphasis, a Bachelor of Science in health studies with an emphasis in massage therapy or a certificate in massage therapy. The certificate in the massage therapy program is flexible – it’s offered in a hybrid, online/on-campus format and can be completed in just two semesters.

FHSU’s massage therapy moves to Memorial Union

The exhibition "Animal Groups" will be displayed from now through Jan. 15 at the Sternberg Museum.

This exhibition is an edition of "Animals in Art," which was originally produced to celebrate the holidays some years ago at The Miami MetroZoo.

This edition has been custom curated for the Hansen Museum in Logan for display from the July 4th weekend to Labor Day weekend 2021 to celebrate the opening of its newly renovated building.

But instead of featuring just one work per artist, this edition features nine groups by nine artists, each represented by five thematically-related works to afford visitors the opportunity to experience the breadth and depth of each artist’s specialized subject matter, treatment and expression.

Tucker Bailey, a painter and a sculptor who is known for her ability to artistically capture personalities of the horses she raises on 30 acres of North Carolina Piedmont, is represented by a strong selection of equine sculptures.  Joy Becker, who specializes in canine sculpture and is well known for her series of playful Dachshunds, is represented by that breed and others including a Golden Retriever.

Educator, graphic designer, and artist, Brandon Finamore, has developed a specialty of portraying birds and insects, in this case, hummingbirds and butterflies which, though tiny, contribute mightily to pollination, which is essential for the ecological survival of the world.

Brian Jarvi, internationally renowned for his 32’ wide panorama, African Menagerie, is represented by five easel paintings of Africa’s “Big Five”: Lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

Former President of the National Sculpture Society, Dan Ostermiller, is represented by a group of barn yard animals full of character: two cats: a rooster, a bull, a turkey and a pig.  

Paintings of animals of land and sea from throughout the Indian Ocean are included by Gamini Ratnavira, a native of that region, who has illustrated various books including "The Mammals of Sri Lanka" and "An Illustrated Guide to The Birds of Sri Lanka."

While former Smithsonian staff artist, Paul Rhymer, is represented by wall relief sculptures of five animals emblematic of the American Southwest: Peccary, road runner, quail on prickly pear and barrel cactus, jack rabbit, bobcat, plus a floor relief sculpture of a hippo thrown in for fun.

Rounding out the exhibition are livestock paintings, including Holstein calves, goats, Charolais beef cattle, chickens and a portrait grouping, by Jan McAllaster Stommes who, with her husband, are co-owners of an agricultural supply business in central Wisconsin.

Last but not least, is a group of North American Mountain-Plains wildlife – pronghorn antelope, elk, big horn sheep and two 7-foot tall showstoppers of a grizzly bear and a moose - by the incomparable Memphis-born painter, now of Colorado, Ezra Tucker.

Thursday night, the Hays Arts Council is set to present the Wichita Children's Theatre's production of Alice in Wonderland at 7 p.m. in the&nbsp;Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.

The annual production, that brings the professional group to Hays for a day allows students to interact and enjoy the classic story.

"We thought it would be a good night," said Hays Arts Council Executive Director Brenda Meder.&nbsp;"We've got Wichita Children's Theatre, making their regular one-day ... Hays visit.

"These productions are only about 45 minutes, we have a family theater production of 'Alice in Wonderland,' a delightful stage adaptation. You know, the classic story of a little girl with the imagination ends up down the rabbit hole, meeting the White Rabbit, the caterpillar, the Dormouse, and then being invited by the Mad Hatter, to a tea party with the crazy Queen of Hearts. 

Along with the production Thursday night, students had the opportunity to see the performance throughout the day.

"A number of them will be attending a production of Alice during the day, I believe theirs is in the afternoon," Meder said. "And we've also got a production from which Children's Theatre of Schoolhouse Rock live for fourth grade."

And while typically tickets are sold at a fraction of their typical cost, thanks to the council, this year she said thanks to a special donation, this year the event is free.

"Ordinarily, even though these companies cost is quite a bit of money, through different underwriting and things and just our desire to reach out and because we also have the other things paid for during the work underwritten during the day, our admission fee for the family productions has always been very minimal," Meder said.

 She said typically the council spends $1000's and $1000's for the company to be here that day, but due to the incredible generosity of a memorial gift given in the name of Aletha Denning, this year will be free for all who attend."

Meder said typically donations similar to Denning's would be added into a general budget line, but this time was different.

"We decided that a good way to share this with the larger community instead of just tucking it into a general budget was to have admission be free that night," she said. "When I mentioned it to her family, they just, they just were thrilled you know because often those things like I said just get tucked into a general budget."

"So it's easy. Nobody's got to fumble with money. Nobody's got to fumble with tickets. Just come and enjoy this wonderful production. That is a gift on behalf of the Hays Arts Council, and the memorial of Aletha Denning."

The Hays Symphony at Fort Hays State University will be presenting&nbsp;Creepy Classics: A Children’s Halloween Concert, featuring loud noises, creepy sounds and the scary stories music can tell, on Sunday, October 31, 2021, 2:30 p.m. in the FHSU Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. The ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Brian Buckstead, assistant professor of violin and viola at FHSU.

The program features&nbsp;Danse Macabre&nbsp;by Camille Saint-Saens,&nbsp;Night on Bald Mountain, by Modest Mussorgsky,&nbsp;In the Hall of the Mountain King from Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, by Edward Grieg,&nbsp;Suite from Psycho, by Bernard Herrmann,&nbsp;March to the Scaffold from Symphonie Fantastique, by Hector Berlioz, and&nbsp;Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Suite, by John Williams.

In addition, a host of music and Halloween themed pre-concert activities will be offered starting at 1:30 p.m.

 “We think it’s important for kids to get their hands on instruments and to make connections between the music they’re hearing and how it’s created,” said Buckstead.

Symphony musicians and members of the FHSU Chapter of the National Association for Music Education will assist with pre-concert activities which include:

· &nbsp;Spooky Music Tour—costumed statues come to life playing clips of the scariest sounds and music kids will hear in the concert

· &nbsp;Drumming Circle—bongos, tam-tams, and other rhythm devices for making lots of loud noise

· &nbsp;String Instrument Petting Zoo—hands-on guided experimenting with violins, violas and cellos

· &nbsp;In the Hall of the Mountain King—tiptoe past the troll….run for your life in this retelling of the Mountain King story full of music, story and action

· &nbsp;Meet the Family: Winds &amp; Brass—flutes, trumpets, tubas, clarinets and more. FHSU students demonstrate their instruments from the wind and brass families

· &nbsp;Creepy Arts and Crafts—create a variety of Halloween characters and props with a treasure box of arts supplies

· &nbsp;Halloween Costume Parade—follow the brass leaders as costumed children parade around Beach-Schmidt and into the auditorium for the start of the concert

· &nbsp;Free Trick-or-Treat Bags to the first 250 kids

COVID-19 vaccine boosters are available now in Ellis County, but Ellis County Health Services officer Jason Kennedy said most vaccinated residents in the region remain protected by their earlier shots.

"Late last Friday, they approved booster shots, really kind of for
anybody that was able to get the additional shot," Kennedy said. 

Individuals over 12 can now recive a Pfizer vaccine booster, and those over 18 can receive Moderna and Johnson &amp; Johnson boosters, he said.

While various health organizations at the state and national level have, over recent weeks, sometimes issued conflicting messages, Kennedy said the essential information to know is the boosters are available, but vaccines for children under 12 are not.

For those looking to get a booster shot, Kennedy said there are a variety of local options.

"We posted a couple of different locations or different options for
people in town on our Facebook page," Kennedy said. "But essentially the private pharmacies,
... both Dillons locations, Walgreens, Walmart pharmacy, and then Ellis
County Health Department, we are all providing booster dose vaccines as well as
primary vaccines."

Further, he said the health department has each vaccine type.

"So right now, if
you want a booster dose, come get one," he said.

And while he said there are currently rumors about the boosters being circulated, Kennedy said the boosters are safe and contain the same formulation as the original vaccine.

"I've seen
some misinformation about this, that it's a new formulation or there's new chemical," Kennedy said. "There is nothing different or new about the
booster doses. It is the exact same thing that was given as an
initial primary dose. And so if if you didn't have any issues with the
initial shot, come get your booster shot if you want it."

While he said the doses are ready for anyone, residents should not feel a need to immediately sign up.

"I will say that there
is not a time-critical crunch to getting booster doses done right now," Kennedy said. "We don't see waning immunity with the initial vaccinations, we actually see them
still very highly effective at that reduction in hospitalizations and really
reduction in deaths."

He said residents curious if they should get a booster and when should consult their physician, but generally, the booster shots will benefit the public health.

"Boosters are a good thing," Kennedy said. "It is the
exact same dose, there's nothing different about it, it will increase
your level of immunity. It will hopefully continue to keep us safe
here through the winter."

And the evidence is showing that even without boosters, the vaccines are remaining effective, he said.

"It's working well," Kennedy said. "And we're not seeing any changes to that. So (for) the people that
aren't vaccinated. The vaccines work. The vaccines are safe."

But with massive amounts of information and disinformation available, he encouraged speaking with a physician to make the best possible health decision.

"It's pretty rare that someone just decides like some internet research, and then they're like, 'Oh, you know what, I'm gonna start treatment on my own cancer.' ... We go to the doctor. We trust the doctor to make the best decision because ... that's what they do. That's what they're good at. And so same thing with this. 

"If you have questions, (call) your doctor."

🎙 COVID vaccine boosters available in Ellis Co.; Kennedy discusses

The Hays market has maybe hours of housing supply, according to local real estate agents at an economic conference Thursday at BriefSpace.

A four- to six-month supply of homes would be a balanced market, but Kansas hasn't had a balanced market since 2015.

After increasing steadily for about three years, home sales in Ellis County began to decline at the end of 2020. Simultaneously, the number of homes for sale also declined, said Stanley Longhofer, director of Wichita State University's Center for Real Estate.

Year-to-date Ellis County home sales are down about 16 percent compared to 2020.

Tim Cossaart, local real estate agent, said stimulus payments brought buyers into the markets, and as those ended, sales started to fall off. However, he said very low housing supplies is also discouraging buyers.

"When you mentioned hours of supply, we're seeing that on occasion," he said. "If it's in the right price range, and it's the right home, we have hours of supply on those kind of houses."

Robert Readle, Hays Board of Realtors president, said "when a house comes on the market, you might get five to 10 phone calls from buyers who are ready to buy that particular house. If you don't act, it's just too late."

The forecast for Kansas home sales is a 3.1 percent increase for 2021 and a 6.2 percent increase for 2022.

Hays is in what would be considered a seller's market.

The median home price in Hays is just over $150,000. However, Longhofer noted that number can be skewed based on what type of homes are selling at any point in time. If more lower-priced homes are selling, that number will skew down — up if more expensive homes are selling.

Mortgage rates have been incredibly low for a 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage, about 3 percent, Longhofer said.

The Mortgage Bankers Association forecast recently released a prediction that the fixed-rate mortgage will remain below 4 percent until at least the end of 2022. Their forecast to 2023 to 2024 is 4.1 to 4.3 percent.

Readle said he thought a jump in mortgage rates could have a big effect on the home buying market in the coming year. Some buyers are looking at more expensive houses and realizing they can upgrade without increasing their payments, using the lower mortgage rate.

Readle said in the tight market some buyers are opting to take bridge loans. This covers the mortgage on their present home and the their future home until their present home sells. You carry two payments for a short time.

Fewer buyers are entering contracts contingent upon their selling their present home. 

Because of the tight housing market, pre-approval is preferred over pre-qualified loans, Readle said.

Readle said he is seeing buyer fatigue. Buyers, especially who have put in the extra effort for a VA- or FSA-backed loans may be outbid by a buyer with a lower cash offer or one that has no contingencies.

Errol Wuertz, real estate agent and appraiser, said he has had problems with some appraisals meeting the selling prices. This has been especially true more recently in Ellis.

The real estate agents said buying and building new homes are comparable in cost. However, not many developers are building right now in Hays.

"We have not met the demand for new housing construction for some time," said Doug Williams, executive director of Grow Hays. "That has contributed significantly to this under inventory problem that we have.

"The only way you add inventory to a market is to build it. If you have not done so in a number of years, you're going to play a catch up game for a long time."
