The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Wednesday reported 15 new COVID-19 cases in Ellis County had been identified since Monday.

As of Wednesday morning, HaysMed reported 16 COVID-19 inpatients, up from 15 on Monday.

The KDHE reported Wednesday 53 percent of eligible Ellis County residents are fully vaccinated, noting the vaccination rate for the eligible Kansas population (12 and older) is approximately 64 percent.

Since reporting began, there have been 4,672 cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County, including 76 coronavirus-related deaths.

KDHE: 15 new COVID cases in Ellis Co. since Monday

The Dane G. Hansen Foundation this week announced additional grant opportunities for early childhood education in northwest Kansas.

Since 2017, multiple reports from Strategic Doing sessions in the 26-county service area of the foundation have identified the need for additional childcare options. The shortage of childcare effects the ability of a community to grow, equating to fewer homes sold, fewer children in our schools, and fewer employees available for our businesses.

In response, the Hansen Trustees launched NW Kansas Cares for Kids in 2020 with three grants designed to assist childcare centers in attracting and retaining quality staff and provide needed tools to prepare the enrolled children with the skills to enter kindergarten ready to continue learning. That initial phase is a five-year pilot program.

The Hansen Board of Trustees is now announcing two additional grants. One will provide support for tangible needs such as office equipment, outdoor play equipment or other physical needs. The other is designed to increase the number of childcare slots by assisting with the start-up or expansion of nonprofit childcare centers, nonprofit group homes or licensed childcare homes.

Early Childhood Education Start-up or Expansion Grants

To assist communities to start or expand quality nonprofit early education centers or group homes in northwest Kansas. In certain situations, the Hansen Foundation can also work through governmental or qualified nonprofit entities to assist in the start-up or sustainability of licensed childcare homes.

The start-up and expansion grants require that applying communities have identified and qualified the need for additional childcare slots; engaged with other community members and entities to create a plan to solve the issue; committed to and have a plan to ensure a livable wage for childcare workers; explored and identified potential sites; and identified local funding sources.&nbsp;

Applicants can request funding to expand an existing childcare site, or to remodel a site for a new or expanded childcare site.

In addition, the Hansen Foundation has contracted to have at least 4 houses built that are designed to work as group homes. Applicants can request to be the recipient of one of these homes which are being built in Logan and will be moved to the applying community.&nbsp; Applicants for these three-bedroom, two-bathroom houses must consider moving costs, including foundation and access costs at the new site, as well as the cost to equip the houses with appliances, furniture and other necessities.

The Enhancement Grant is designed to assist with physical needs beyond curriculum, such as office equipment or outdoor play equipment. Applicants are encouraged to explore currently available government grants as well as this new grant from the Hansen Foundation.

The grant is limited to nonprofit licensed childcare centers or group homes located in the 26-county area served by the Dane G. Hansen Foundation.

Home-based childcare businesses and preschools are not eligible for this grant.&nbsp;

Hansen Foundation introduces new support for early childhood education

By JACKIE MUNDT Pratt County farmer and rancher Paid time-off for farmers is one of the intriguing ideas that caught the attention of our group during the recent Kansas Farm Bureau Casten Fellows international travel experience to the Baltics. One of the young farmers we met shared that the Replacement Farmers program provides subsidized, qualified workers to help during illness or time away on vacation. This first-generation farmer said she uses the Replacement Farmers for education and expertise because of the knowledge and experience required of the fill-in workers. That clear recognition of the mastery needed to succeed in farming was a lightbulb moment for our group. We realized that every farmer we met with in the Baltics has made a conscious decision with their career and business ownership. There is no multi-generational pressure because farm ownership is still in the first generation. People choosing farming careers take their work seriously; they seek out education and training opportunities to improve themselves because everyone there remembers how many people failed at farming after the region was liberated from Soviet occupation. Farming is a respected profession. Can a farmer be considered a professional? The status of being a professional probably seems like a silly question, but it’s worth pondering. The Oxford Languages dictionary definition of professional focuses on a person with “prolonged training or a formal qualification.” So many people in our world think farmers are people who lack intelligence and ambition. They definitely have no idea how many are college educated with degrees in everything from engineering and finance to chemistry and genetics. I always enjoy enlightening people who have never met a farmer and have visions of farmers being what they were portrayed as on television shows of the 1950s. I think most modern farmers could pass the litmus test of training and qualification. However, in direct conflict with the idea of farmers being professionals is the Merriam Webster definition specifically states, “an occupation that is not mechanical or agricultural.” That definition aligns with more medieval views that separate the learned professions (law, medicine and divinity) from other trades or farm laborers. However, if we are going to believe historical definitions we need to include ones that add the idea of professionals providing services for the benefit of the client or the public. Farmers definitely do that. As Americans, we enjoy the most abundant, safest and cheapest food supply in the world. That has allowed the public to detach itself from the realities of what it takes to ensure the security of this foundational need. The supply chain disruptions of the past 18 months are the first time in the lives of many generations’ that we have had even the slightest moments of scarcity. If you are one of the people just noticing farmers, I hope you see the way they have worked to improve their practices to ensure food safety; updated equipment and inputs to increase efficiency keeping costs low; and innovated and experimented to increase yields to keep up with global demand. They continue to plant their crops and care for animals whether prices are high or low. They wear dozens of hats and are continually learning to stay on top of their ever-changing industry. Maybe you have never thought of farmers as professionals and think they do not strictly fit into the dictionary definitions. But, I challenge you to consider the complex nature of modern agricultural systems, their benefit to the public and the required skills formed through prolonged training it takes to produce our food. In the big picture, I believe farmers have earned the designation of professional.

RUSSELL — The holiday season is not a joyful one for everyone, especially those who are grieving, dealing with sever or chronic illness, those who are coping with depression or anxiety and those who have been hard hit financially.

The church embraces the ministry of healing as an important way of bringing the loving care of God to people in their need. Although the dimensions of this healing work are many and include a variety of institutions dedicated to it, the ministry of healing has its foundation in the prayer of the worshiping community, where two or three are gathered at a particular time of need.

In the rite of healing, the church does not replace the gifts of God that come through the scientific or medical community, nor does it promise a cure. Rather, the church offers and celebrates gifts such as these: God’s presence with strength and comfort in time of suffering, God’s promise of wholeness and peace, and God’s love embodied in the community of faith.

Pastor Teri Sutherlin will offer weekly healing services beginning Nov. 11. Services will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be 30 to 45 minutes. Anyone is welcome to attend these services, which will continue through the Christmas season.

CASA of the High Plains, Inc. is seeking a skilled individual to manage the Court Appointed Special Advocate (“CASA”) program for the CASA of the High Plains, Inc. The goal of the program is to assist the Courts in the placement of children currently in the child welfare system due to alleged or confirmed abuse or neglect. The Executive Director’s primary responsibility is the administration of the CASA program on behalf of the Board of Directors. More specifically, the Executive Director’s responsibilities include:

	•	Training, coordinating, and working with CASA volunteers before and during child in need of care cases filed in the 23rd Judicial District for the State of Kansas. This also includes recruitment and screening of all potential volunteers.&nbsp;

	•	Attending court proceedings in Ellis, Rooks, Trego, and Gove counties.

	•	Management and development of the program’s finances, which shall include assisting the Board’s treasurer with development of a budget, identifying funding sources, grant writing, and fundraising.&nbsp;

	•	Working with local, state, and national program individuals, Judges, court staff, and the Board of Directors.

Potential applicants should meet the following requirements:

	•	Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university;

	•	Three (3) years experience working in fields related to human services, business management, social work, criminal justice, psychology, communication, or education;

	•	Experience in public speaking, fundraising, and/or grant writing would be preferable;

	•	Passing a background check and completion of CASA volunteer training.

The Executive Director is a full-time, salaried position with a flexible schedule. Salary for qualified applicants is negotiable based on experience.

Hays city offices closed for Veterans Day

ELLSWORTH COUNTY—A Kansas man died in an accident just before 2p.m. Tuesday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1986 Mercury Cougar driven by Scott J.&nbsp;Compitello, 46, Hill City, was westbound on Interstate 70 just east of Sylvan Grove.

The car rear-ended the trailer of a 2018 Peterbilt semi driven by Stephan Ray Fulk Sr., 48, Hamton, Arkansas, who was stopped on the shoulder of the interstate.

Compitello was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Parson's Funeral Home. Fulk, Sr. and a passenger in the semi were not injured. Compitello was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Chevy Silverado driven by Matthew P. Lacaze, 26, Monticello, Arkansas, was northbound on 220th Avenue where the roadway curves to the east onto M Road nine miles southwest of Hill City.

The pickup entered the north ditch, rolled and the driver was partially ejected and trapped under the vehicle.

EMS transported&nbsp;Lacaze to Hays Medical Center. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Two Hays woman have been busy elves since June creating fantastic Christmas decor to be sold during the annual Arc Festival of Trees fundraiser.

The multi-purpose room at the Arc in Hays is filled with decorated Christmas trees, porchscapes, table-top decor, signs and wreaths.

An online auction will run Friday to Nov. 17 and benefit the final stage of Hays' ARC Park — an accessible ball diamond. It will also be in Seven Hills Park. 

The ball field is estimated to cost $600,000 to $700,0000. The project has about $40,000 raised for this phase of the project.

Donna McKenzie and Joan Heier were the creative talent behind most of the holiday decor. 

Heier volunteered with the project last year. McKenzie has never volunteered with the Arc before, but saw all the wonderful creations that were produced last year and offered her time this year.

Heier said when she started with the project, she was a little bit overwhelmed because the Arc had so much to work with. Almost all the items that are auctioned during the Festival of Trees are made from items that are donated to the Arc Thrift Store. The store sets back items year-round for the project.

"You can see a piece, and it may have come from five different boxes of collection or it may have come at different times," McKenzie said. "I started a tree and just now found some that I want to add to the tree. As things come in, it just keeps growing and growing."

"A lot of it was whatever you see. 'I think I can work with this. I think I can make this. I have enough stuff to put this together,' " she said.

A leg lamp came into the Arc from "A Christmas Story," so a tree based on the movie had to be made, McKenzie said. The lamp, a sign and one ornament were donated. McKenzie made the rest of the decorations for the tree by hand out of donated items.

The ladies have been very prolific in their work. Although a couple of others pitched in, the women made most of the decor themselves.

 The Arc is still counting items and loading photos into the online auction portal. However, Kathy McAdoo, Arc executive director, estimated the project has more than 200 items this year — 30 to 50 more items than last year.

The items range from large fully-decorated Christmas trees or a decorated wheel barrow to small table-top rustic cabin. There's something for every space and budget, McAdoo said.

The women said they enjoyed working together, which included many eight-hour days during the last five months. Sometimes they just needed a second set of eyes on a project or four hands — and they had to learn to laugh at themselves, Heier said.

"It was so much fun, because every day you learned something new about what you were working with, and we helped each others," Heier said.

McKenzie took a week off from the project when her first grandson was born, but she said she missed her friend and the work. 

"Of course, I wanted to be home with my grandson, but I knew stuff was going on down here without me," she said as she and Heier both broke into laughter.

McKenzie, who used to work in a flower shop, said she thought her and Heier's styles were complimentary. McKenzie's designs are more natural and rustic, such as an old decorated wooden ladder or wooden chair.&nbsp; Heier's designs are more glamorous with lots of silver and gold, and glitter.

It seems no matter what the two ladies were designing, they always came home covered in glitter, McKenzie joked. Her husband questioned where it was all coming from.

McKenzie said one of her favorite projects is a Santa peaking through an antique window. She found a Santa image that was on a stretched canvas. She white washed the window and added calligraphy to the top pane of the window.

The project also has a Hot Wheels tree that includes a track running around the tree.

The women had fun making the projects, but they haven't lost sight of the goal to raise money for the ARC Park. They considered having T-shirts made that said "Bid high, bid often."

"It's means a lot to me that I can contribute to that," McKenzie said of the ARC Park. "I was always looking for a way to get involved down here. This has been where I can use my talents, and it can really grow and go into the ARC Park."

Before she started volunteering for the Arc, Heier said she didn't realize the needs of the people the Arc serves and how many people needed help.

"To me it's very rewarding, and I love what I've been able to do," she said. "I've made all these friends. It's been good all the way around."

Both women said they were very thankful for the generous donations to the Arc Thrift Store. Without them, the Festival of Trees would not be possible. Some of the items that were donated still had tags on them or where new in their boxes.

Although all of the items up for auction will be available to view online, people also can view the items in person at the Arc office, 600 Main. The items can be viewed during Arc Thrift Store hours 9 a.m. 4 p.m. during the auction. The thrift store is closed on Sundays.

Glitter to leg lamp: Women pool talents to create Arc Festival of Trees

That's down nearly three dollars from the beginning of the month, but it's more than $32 higher than at the beginning of the year. Observers last week reported several signs of a resurgent Kansas oil patch. The Kansas Corporation Commission Web site shows 159 new intent-to-drill notices in October, the best monthly total so far this year. That brings the year-to-date total statewide to 1,027 intents, compared to just 469 by the end of October last year. There are eight new intents on file in Barton County, one in Ellis County, two in Russell County and five in Stafford County. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reported the tally of newly-spudded wells is up more than 146% over a year ago. The number of operators working in the state is up 35%. This week's Rig Count in Kansas shows 15 active rigs east of Wichita, down one, and 26 in Western Kansas, which is up two. Operators are about to spud a new well in Barton County and drilling is underway on a lease in Stafford County. Kansas regulators approved 39 new drilling permits last week. That brings the total number of new Kansas drilling locations so far this year to 966 compared to just 392 a year ago. There are 28 new permits in eastern Kansas, and 11 west of Wichita, including two permits in Barton County, one in Russell County and three in Stafford County. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports 33 newly-completed wells across Kansas, with 18 east of Wichita and one each in Ellis and Stafford counties among the 15 in Western Kansas. Operators have completed 753 wells so far this year compared to 719 through October of last year. The operator of Kansas' largest refinery reported a year-over-year increase of 35% in net income for the fiscal year. CHS reported a big increase in earnings in its agriculture segment, but a decline among its refineries. In a statement, the company said improved refinery margins were more than offset by price increases for Canadian heavy crude, and by what the company called the exceptionally high cost of renewable energy tax credits. The Kansas Geological Society recognized and named three new oil fields and one infield-wildcat discovery in Kansas last week. They are located in Gove, Haskell, Lane and Greeley counties. That makes 19 new fields identified so far this year, compared to 17 at this point last year. The OPEC-Plus export group will stay the course, adding another 400,000 barrels per day to their output for December. Delegates on Thursday disregarded demands from President Biden for faster increases. According to Bloomberg, there is growing speculation the U.S. could soon tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in an effort to drive down prices.&nbsp; U.S. Oil-by-rail traffic was down last month, according to a report from the Association of American Railroads. The trade group says overall rail traffic was down 2.8% last month, but petroleum shipments were down 2,495 carloads, a 6.1% decline. Weekly oil-by-rail tallies across the U.S. were down from a year ago but slightly higher than last week's report. AAR reports 9,558 tanker carloads hauling petroleum for the week through October 30th, up 14 carloads from the week before but down 6.5% from a year ago. Canadian oil-by-rail traffic is down for the week but still nearly 14% higher than a year ago. Baker Hughes reports 550 active rigs nationwide, an increase of six oil rigs. The count in Texas was up four rigs. Of the 550 active rigs being tracked this week, 492 are horizontal rigs, an increase of nine rigs. The number of active vertical drilling rigs was down four. U.S. crude inventories increased by more than three million barrels last week to just over 434 million barrels. EIA says stockpiles are about six percent below the five year average for this time of year. U.S. crude-oil production topped 11 million barrels per day for the sixth week in a row. The Energy Information Administration reports domestic output reached over 11.5 million barrels per day for the week through October 29th. That's an increase of 192,000 barrels per day from the week before, and up more than 1.1 million barrels per day over a year ago. The government reported a drop in crude imports of over 83,000 barrels per day last week, at 6.2 million barrels per day. The four week average is nearly 15% higher than during the same four-week period last year. Oil major BP now asserts that worldwide crude-oil demand has once again exceeded 100-million barrels a day, a consumption figure not seen since before the pandemic. Bloomberg reports the resurgent demand has stymied some efforts to curb emissions, pushed prices to multiyear highs, and threatens the world's economic recovery. North Dakota's biggest operator will drop more than three billion dollars to acquire a huge tract in the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico. Continental Resources said in a statement the new drilling rights will help generate a half-billion dollars in free cash flow next year. Continental will pay Pioneer Natural Resources $3.25 billion for 92,000 net acres in the Delaware sub-region of the Permian. Bloomberg reports the record amount of free cash flow in the U.S. shale patch is driving a return to asset sales and corporate consolidation. The government says you will spend more on heating bills this winter than you have in the last several years. The Energy Information Administration says the higher prices follow changes to energy supply and demand patterns during the pandemic. The increases will depend on the weather, and not all households will see increases. EIA's Winter Fuels Outlook predicts nearly half of US homes heated by natural gas will see their bills go up 30% or more. The report says 41% of homes with electrical heating will see increases of about six percent to their bills. Only about five percent of homes with propane heat, and about four percent of those using heating oil will see increases, but those will both be double-digit increases.

News From the Oil Patch: Higher winter heating bills on the way

Kansas Startup is back to full strength and will kick off on Friday, Nov. 12, at Fort Hays State University’s Robbins Center.

The 48-hour hands-on event, which runs through Sunday afternoon, offers the opportunity for people to pitch ideas for new ventures, form teams around the best ideas, then turn those ideas into reality. Teams work on plans ranging from solving problems in their community to launching nonprofit organizations.

Henry Schwaller IV is an instructor of management and entrepreneurship at FHSU and a local businessman, who has been involved with the event from its start in 2013. He always looks forward to the weekend but is especially excited about this year’s event returning to the in-person format after most of it was conducted over Zoom last year.

“There is far more energy and enthusiasm with the in-person competition,” Schwaller said. “We work best and learn best when we are face-to-face.”

Schwaller said pre-event enrollment has been strong thus far and expects up to 50 or more participants. The event begins at 6 p.m. Friday with a barbecue meal. A formal presentation will follow the meal, along with some icebreaker exercises. Individuals pitch ideas for new ventures, then teams are formed and begin discussing strategy for their presentations.

Participants are encouraged to come as individuals and form impromptu teams, so they can get out of their comfort zone, Schwaller said.

On Saturday, the teams work on developing their ideas with the assistance of coaches and other experts, then transforming it into a launchable venture. They then complete the task of transforming their ideas into a lauchable venture.

Schwaller said that people from the community traditionally drop in on Sunday’s presentations, adding that students especially benefit from the participation of community members.

“We bring in folks with specialized talent,” Schwaller said. “That gets the teams targeted assistance.”

Schwaller said he notices a vast difference in creativity from the first couple of years of Kansas Startup, noting that presentations have advanced from starting food trucks and sports bars a few years ago to ideas of community revitalization, nonprofit consulting, and nurse recruiting.

“Ideas have gotten much more sophisticated over the years,” he said. “We now have a generation of students who are learning these types of collaborative-type participation in class. Our campus is a petri dish for creative, innovative thought, and our students are really benefitting from it.”

Lidia Hook-Gray, president of the Kansas Historical Foundation Board of Directors, delivered her president’s address on aviation history in Liberal. Linda Jeffrey, acting director of the Kansas Historical Foundation, gave an update on the agency’s past fiscal year and upcoming future projects.

Jennie Chinn, executive director of the Kansas Historical Society, the state agency, provided an updated on the project for new exhibits at the Kansas Museum of History that will honor those who have come before and resonate for the 21st century. The new exhibits are projected to open in 2023. Since the Museum’s opening in 1984 nearly 2 million people have visited. Each year, the Historical Society serves more than 20 million people onsite and online.

The Kansas Historical Foundation, a 501(c)3, is a&nbsp;fundraising, fund management, membership, and retail organization, whose mission is to&nbsp;support the Historical Society, a state agency. NW Kansans will serve on state historical foundation board

THOMAS COUNTY—A Kansas man was injured in an accident just after 4:30p.m. Monday in Thomas County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Ford Fusion driven by Trevion Devante&nbsp;Harley, 19, Goodland, took the eastbound off ramp from Interstate 70 to County Road 2. 

The driver failed to yield at the intersection and collided with a 2005 Peterbilt semi driven by Aaron James&nbsp;Luckert, 28, Brewster.

EMS transported Harley to the hospital in Goodland.&nbsp;Luckert was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Hays, KS Every day, nurse practitioners (NPs) are saving lives and improving the health of our friends and family. To honor their efforts, hospitals nationwide are recognizing the critical role of NPs as part of the annual National Nurse Practitioner Week (NP Week) celebration, held November 7-13 this year.

NPs provide a wide range of care to America’s patients in more than 1 billion visits annually. This year, the NP Week theme is “NPs: Going the Extra Mile,” recognizes the contributions more than 325,000 licensed NPs make to the health of patients nationwide. These health care professionals practice in clinics, hospitals, emergency rooms, urgent care centers, nursing homes and private practices across the country — wherever patients are in need — and continue to provide front-line care during the COVID-19 pandemic.

NPs assess patients, order and interpret tests, make diagnoses and provide treatment, including prescribing medications. As clinicians who blend clinical expertise with an added emphasis on disease prevention and health management, NPs are the health care provider of choice for millions of Americans.

“NPs play a critical role in treating patients,” said Terry Siek, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President for Patient Care.&nbsp; “They play a key role in strengthening our ability to ensure patients have access to high-quality care.”&nbsp;

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Monday reported 12 new COVID-19 cases in Ellis County had been identified since Friday.

As of Monday morning, HaysMed reported 15 COVID-19 inpatients, up from 14 on Friday.

The KDHE reported Monday 53 percent of eligible Ellis County residents are fully vaccinated, noting the vaccination rate for the eligible Kansas population (12 and older) is approximately 64 percent.

Since reporting began, there have been 4,657 cases of COVID-19 identified in Ellis County, including 76 coronavirus-related deaths.

Senior Fort Hays State University interior design students are showing off their skills by making old-style new again.

For their senior interior design exhibition at the Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art on the FHSU campus, the students created four mid-century modern vignettes. The exhibit will run through Nov. 12.

After discussing for a bit, Charles Boyd, senior of Salina, said that the class decided to focus on 1970s mid-century modern style because they saw this as a style coming back in fashion.

Many of the items are personal belongings of students in the class.

"I love the colors of it," Boyd said. "I'm a huge green person, and I love the yellows and the oranges and especially the style of furniture with the flared-out legs, just kind of the simplicity in modern. It's just something I really&nbsp; like."

Kameron Lowery, senior of Dodge City, said she enjoyed working with mid-century modern style.

"Mid-century modern is a very open concept type of style," she said. "A lot of it is about bringing the outdoors in. You can see plants and object that have that organic shape and texture that resonate with nature. 

"Also the muted tones of browns and oranges and pops of color are really nice, as well, to make the space a little more fun and interesting."

Nichole Allen, senior of Courtland, also said she loves mid-century modern.

"Specifically, I like the colors like the yellows and the greens. The browns are very earthy and warm and happy," she said. "I love that feel that vibe of warm. I a very cold person. Mid-century is very clean. It's modern, but old. It's very homey. You can just cuddle up in it."

In addition to the vignettes, photographs on the walls of the gallery feature designs the eight students in the class have created throughout their studies at FHSU. They include various styles and room settings.

"When we work with someone someday we're able to show whatever their style is instead of what we prefer." Many of these designs are completed using computer software to render the images."I think this process was a lot of fun for us," Boyd said. "It was really our first time actually experiencing the process of going through and finding all of the furniture, getting ready for the staging process and actually seeing our design come to life. ... I think that is really preparing us for the real world."<figure>

 </figure>Colin Schmidtberger, interior design instructor, said the exhibition is the students' grand exit from the program. "It's the one thing that gives them hands-on experience with design," he said.The students' decision to focus on mid-century modern design was unique, he said."This style is coming back," he said. "It's making its way back into the world right now. You're seeing people coming through, the older crowd, it's bringing back memories for them and a lot of them don't want it to be in their spaces again. Where the younger crowd and students who are coming in are all about, 'I want this in my house.'"
