VICTORIA — The High Plains Barbershop Chorus will be supporting an all-women's Sweet Adelines chorus starting Thursday, April 21.

The new chorus and the men's barbershop group will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hays.&nbsp;

The Hays men's group has about two dozen members from across western Kansas.

The chorus recently joined the Colby chorus for a show in Hays. The Hays chorus in turn performed with the Colby singers in Colby.

The High Plains Barbershop Chorus celebrated Barbershop Quartet Day at Victoria Elementary School on Monday.

Max Befort, High Plains Barbershop member, is the chorus teacher at the school.

"Music is something that's lifelong — that you can always do, even if you're just jamming out in your car," he said. "My theory on music is it should impact lives. As you can see, it's impacted all of our lives. The students can see this is something they can do their whole lives."

He said singing with a group also helps create lifelong friendships. 

Vance Chartier, barbershop member, said music helps teach students discipline and focus, which helps them in their other studies.

Nex-Tech's Tech Edge returns to Hays in June

COLBY — The Colby Community College art department will host the 11th&nbsp;annual Spring Art Walk on Friday, April 22, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. along Franklin Avenue in downtown Colby.&nbsp;

Art and activities will span 15 locations, with many pieces available for purchase. The show features works by professional artists and student creations from CCC and area K-12 public and private schools.&nbsp;

K-12 art will be hung at&nbsp;Movement Connection and EXP Realty. CCC student art will be on display at Colby Furniture.

The printmaking department from Fort Hays State University will demonstrate various techniques. Affordable customized T-shirts can be purchased.&nbsp;

"There are new and different pieces this year," said CCC art instructor Rebel Mahieu. "And we still have room for more if somebody has something they want to share."

Three-day weather outlook

HOXIE — Area live music lovers have an opportunity to experience the upbeat fusion of one of our neighboring countries at 3 p.m.&nbsp;CDT, Sunday, April 24, at Hoxie High School Auditorium.&nbsp;Cubanisms&nbsp;traces the evolution of Cuban music from its African origins to all of its modern forms.

Admission is by Western Plains Arts Association season ticket or adults $10 and students $5 at the door.

This project is generously funded by Mid-America Arts Alliance, the National&nbsp;Endowment for the Arts, and the state art agencies of Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri,&nbsp;Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas.

In addition,&nbsp;season&nbsp;grants&nbsp;from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation, Logan, makes&nbsp;Cubanisms&nbsp;possible.

Through the public grant funding,&nbsp;WPAA is offering a free educational outreach activity of the&nbsp;Cubanisms&nbsp;band at 1:30 p.m.&nbsp;CDT&nbsp;on&nbsp;April 24--also in the Hoxie High School Auditorium.&nbsp; This is open to all interested persons and will give background on the group and their music.

The&nbsp;Kansas City&nbsp;band was founded in&nbsp;2016 by Michael&nbsp;McClintock.&nbsp;Its music is a fusion mixing the&nbsp;“Cuban Tres” (native Cuban instrument)&nbsp;with some sparkles of Salsa, Jazz, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban rhythms. It reflects the richness that comes from the experience of its members and its Anglo-Saxon, Mexican and Brazilian roots. Its diversity is also found in its repertoire where&nbsp;three&nbsp;languages are included: Spanish, Portuguese and English.&nbsp;

Acento Cubano&nbsp;(2017) and&nbsp;Trilingual&nbsp;(2019) are a compilation of classic songs, arranged by McClintock. His desire was to bring a modern touch with the fusion that comes from his inspiration from the Cuban Tres and his background of Jazz, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban studies. Both albums have received great compliments in Cuba, Colombia and the United States of America.

Cubanisms&nbsp;has received&nbsp;three&nbsp;nominations in 2018 &amp; 2019, by The Pitch and KC community: Best Local Band, Best musician (Michael McClintock) and Best Vocalist (Fedra Cooper, 2018) and (Bruno Bessa 2019)

Michael McClintock&nbsp;was&nbsp;invited two years in a row to perform at the Jazz Plaza International Festival in Havana, Cuba. The invitation was extended in 2019 for&nbsp;Cubanisms. The band had the chance to perform as part of the Festival in two of the most important venues of the island "Fabrica de Arte Cubano" and "Centro Cultural Bertolt Brecht".

A small earthquake was recorded late Monday in Rooks County, the Kansas Geological Survey reported.

The 2.4-magnitude quake was detected at 11:36 p.m. Monday in the western part of the county, between Plainville and the Rooks-Graham county line.

Minor earthquake reported in Rooks County

Gary and Stacy Rempe traveled many a mile watching their three sons play sports throughout the year at Centralia High School in northeast Kansas. So they wouldn’t think of missing this weekend’s Fort Hays State University rodeo to watch their youngest son, Nathan, compete.

It will be the last FHSU rodeo for Nathan, and it’s his first competition in several weeks after being sidelined with an injury. His family won’t have long to wait to watch him compete this weekend. He will mount his horse at Doug Phillip Arena for Thursday evening’s first public performance of the 56th annual event.

Nathan will compete as the heeler in the team roping event along with the header, Horacio Holguin from Northwestern Oklahoma State University. The top 10 scores and times in each event from the first four rounds of competition advance to Saturday night’s finals at 7:00. The first two public performances are 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday with slack performances at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

Nathan has high hopes that Thursday’s competition is not his last go-around.

“I’d definitely like to go out with a bang at my last home rodeo in college,” Nathan said. “This being our hometown rodeo, I’m pretty excited to set the pace for the team roping – and for our entire team.”

Setting the pace was something that became old hat at tradition-rich Centralia High, which has won state championships in multiple sports. But success in rodeo didn’t come as easily for Nathan, who didn’t compete in that arena until college.

Although he lived just an hour from two other state universities, Nathan decided to follow some friends to FHSU after his high school graduation.

“When I came and visited Fort Hays State, I loved the campus and the atmosphere,” he said. “I was from a small town, and FHSU has a small-town atmosphere. I realized I could get the same education, if not better, at Fort Hays State and at a more affordable rate.”

His friends happened to be part of the rodeo team, so Nathan started hanging out at the arena. He joined the FHSU Rodeo Club his freshman year and used that year to gain valuable experience.

Rodeo was new to the Rempe family, but Nathan’s parents vowed to follow and support him in his new venture.

“We have thoroughly enjoyed the rodeo part of it,” said his mother, who has attended every rodeo that Nathan has competed in during his college career.

She added that they were pleased that Nathan chose FHSU because Hays “felt like a second home.” The Rempes had visited Fort Hays State numerous times when Centralia qualified for state high school sporting events.

“Hays was our home-away-from-home when the boys were in high school,” she said. “We got to know the town, which is so welcoming, and the campus is just as friendly as the community. So we knew Nathan would fit in well here.”

The Rempes gave Nathan his first horse when he was 8 years old, and he had worked at a feed yard back home during high school. So riding horses was nothing new for the youngest Rempe sibling. But roping a calf’s hind legs sure was.

“Nathan was pretty green when he first started here,” said Bronc Rumford, one of the FHSU coaches. “But he has worked really hard to get to where he is today. He bought into things we have tried to teach him, and he’s a kid we’re proud of from a coaching standpoint.”

Nathan started entering competitions his sophomore year and plans to continue competing in rodeos after graduation.

In looking back, Nathan said that choosing Fort Hays State was one of the best decisions of his life. While in school, he met his future wife, Bailey McCaughey, an FHSU rodeo team alum. Nathan and Bailey will both graduate from FHSU in May and are engaged to be married Sept. 3.

Bailey is good friends with T.J. Watts, a rope horse trainer in Colorado. Nathan started training colts for Watts and plans to continue that job after graduation.

It all started with the rodeo team, an experience of a lifetime Nathan said he will never forget.

“Our club is tight-knit. We all work together as a family, so we are a really close group,” he said. “It’s hard not to improve with support like that.”

So they wouldn’t think of missing this weekend’s Fort Hays State University rodeo to watch their youngest son, Nathan, compete.It will be the last FHSU rodeo for Nathan, and it’s his first competition in several weeks after being sidelined with an injury. His family won’t have long to wait to watch him compete this weekend. He will mount his horse at Doug Phillip Arena for Thursday evening’s first public performance of the 56th annual event.Nathan will compete as the heeler in the team roping event along with the header, Horacio Holguin from Northwestern Oklahoma State University. The top 10 scores and times in each event from the first four rounds of competition advance to Saturday night’s finals at 7:00. The first two public performances are 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday with slack performances at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday.Nathan has high hopes that Thursday’s competition is not his last go-around.“I’d definitely like to go out with a bang at my last home rodeo in college,” Nathan said. “This being our hometown rodeo, I’m pretty excited to set the pace for the team roping – and for our entire team.”Setting the pace was something that became old hat at tradition-rich Centralia High, which has won state championships in multiple sports. But success in rodeo didn’t come as easily for Nathan, who didn’t compete in that arena until college.Although he lived just an hour from two other state universities, Nathan decided to follow some friends to FHSU after his high school graduation.“When I came and visited Fort Hays State, I loved the campus and the atmosphere,” he said. “I was from a small town, and FHSU has a small-town atmosphere. I realized I could get the same education, if not better, at Fort Hays State and at a more affordable rate.”His friends happened to be part of the rodeo team, so Nathan started hanging out at the arena. He joined the FHSU Rodeo Club his freshman year and used that year to gain valuable experience.Rodeo was new to the Rempe family, but Nathan’s parents vowed to follow and support him in his new venture.“We have thoroughly enjoyed the rodeo part of it,” said his mother, who has attended every rodeo that Nathan has competed in during his college career.She added that they were pleased that Nathan chose FHSU because Hays “felt like a second home.” The Rempes had visited Fort Hays State numerous times when Centralia qualified for state high school sporting events.“Hays was our home-away-from-home when the boys were in high school,” she said. “We got to know the town, which is so welcoming, and the campus is just as friendly as the community. So we knew Nathan would fit in well here.”The Rempes gave Nathan his first horse when he was 8 years old, and he had worked at a feed yard back home during high school. So riding horses was nothing new for the youngest Rempe sibling. But roping a calf’s hind legs sure was.“Nathan was pretty green when he first started here,” said Bronc Rumford, one of the FHSU coaches. “But he has worked really hard to get to where he is today. He bought into things we have tried to teach him, and he’s a kid we’re proud of from a coaching standpoint.”Nathan started entering competitions his sophomore year and plans to continue competing in rodeos after graduation.In looking back, Nathan said that choosing Fort Hays State was one of the best decisions of his life. While in school, he met his future wife, Bailey McCaughey, an FHSU rodeo team alum. Nathan and Bailey will both graduate from FHSU in May and are engaged to be married Sept. 3.Bailey is good friends with T.J. Watts, a rope horse trainer in Colorado. Nathan started training colts for Watts and plans to continue that job after graduation.It all started with the rodeo team, an experience of a lifetime Nathan said he will never forget.“Our club is tight-knit. We all work together as a family, so we are a really close group,” he said. “It’s hard not to improve with support like that.”

FHSU’s Rempe back in the saddle for final home rodeo

ELLIS — The hunt is on for the next leader of Ellis USD 388 schools.

During Monday’s Board of Education meeting, board members heard from Gary Sechrist, Kansas
Association of School Boards leadership field specialist, who
outlined the process for the board as it searches for the district’s next
superintendent.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/2bf608c0-eae8-44f8-bd32-38085321efac">The
district is looking to replace outgoing superintendent Corey Burton who
announced his departure on March 30 after he announced he had accepted a superintendent
position at Ulysses USD 214.</a>

"I look forward to a busy and successful
end of our school year as we support the transition to a new district
leader," Burton said in the announcement.

He called his 16 years serving the district a “great
honor.”

And while Burton leads the district through the
end of the academic year, the board and staff will be busy working to secure his
replacement.

The process began with four focus groups made
up of faculty, staff and community members outlining what qualities the new superintendent
should possess, along with an online survey.

Sechrist first shared with the board the qualities
the groups wanted to see in the new superintendent.

&nbsp;“They
want somebody that's personable, can easily build relationships and
approachable,” Sechrist said. Honesty, trustworthiness and a student-first
leadership style were listed as traits wanted as well.

Organization, accountability and consistency were
also cited as desired qualities.

When asked to list a critical need or challenge the new superintendent should
address, retaining staff and aging facilities in need of repair were reported as
the biggest concerns.

The survey also questioned the participants to describe the single trait
they would hope the board would use between one great candidate and another
great candidate.

Along with positive personal qualities, Sechrist noted the groups
reported wanting someone with ambition, attitude, professionalism and the right
disposition for the job.

With the information in hand, the board then heard Sechrist describe details
of the process.

He noted, that first and foremost, the position would need to be a new
hire, as no administrators in the district currently have the level of
certification needed for the position.

&nbsp;The ability to find a candidate that has long-term ambitions was mentioned as a desire by board member Jared Schiel as the district has a number of exciting ongoing
programs that would be attractive to a up-and-comer.

“I'm just trying to figure out a way that we can attract that young future
superstar,” Schiel said. “If we can get somebody coming in here to give us four
years, they're gonna have a chance to pass a bond right away. That's huge.
That's huge for any superintendent.”

“You have a wonderful school district. You have some really exciting things
that are coming down the pike,” Sechrist said.

But in finding that candidate, even someone new to the position, he
warned the board frugality might not be beneficial when considering salary
and benefit packages — as a shortfall of available superintendent candidates
plagues the state.

“I do want to tell you, it's a superintendent’s market, whether you like
it or not,” Sechrist said. “Every candidate knows what the current
superintendent’s making, and they know your budget can handle it. So, you may
not like that, but it might be the difference between sealing the deal and not.
So, you need to be aware of that. I'm not saying you have to like it. I'm just
telling you what the truth is right now.”

Applications are due to the district by April 24. Sechrist plans to meet
with the board again on April 27.

USD 388: The search begins for next Ellis superintendent

A potential microfactory in Hays is one giant step closer to
becoming reality following an announcement from Gov. Laura Kelly on Tuesday.

The announcement named recipients of $100 million in Building
a Stronger Economy grant awards out of 446 applications totaling $1.8 billion.

With the announcement, 35 infrastructure investment programs
across Kansas were given amounts ranging from $13,500 to $10 million.

"The BASE program is vital to enhancing Kansas'
economic competitiveness,"&nbsp;Kelly said.&nbsp;"These grants
provide essential funding to our local communities, positioning them to succeed
and be a place of continued economic growth."

The program offers matching funds in an effort to address
economic development opportunities that would expand the state's base of
businesses and residents to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic,
the announcement said.

"The BASE grants provide critical support for
transformational economic development projects across Kansas and will be a huge
boost to local economies,"&nbsp;said Lt. Gov. and Secretary of
Commerce David Toland.&nbsp;"Working in partnership with local leaders
enhances the long-term sustainability of the projects and ensures that these
targeted dollars will fit the specific needs of each community and their plans
for future growth."

"For our state to grow and businesses to flourish, we
need a strong economic foundation in communities across Kansas,"&nbsp;said
Senate President Ty Masterson.&nbsp;"I believe that building that
foundation requires strong tax and economic policies. SPARK appropriated funds
for these BASE grants because they offer unique opportunities to strengthen
those foundations and build a prosperous future for all Kansans."&nbsp;

In Ellis County, Grow Hays Executive Director Doug Williams
said giving potential manufacturing operations a leg up has been a focus that
fits into the goals of the grants.

“We've had some manufacturing here, but not a lot,” Williams
said. “And we need to build on that. That's an area of opportunity.”

And so the Ellis County economic development organization
has been working to develop a microfactory that would be used to help
manufacturing businesses take hold in Ellis County.

“In essence, what that is, is an incubator for manufacturing
companies,” Williams said. “It's a 30,000-square-foot structure that would be
divided into anywhere from four to six areas. And we would solicit small
manufacturers who have either an idea or a product they're trying to bring to
the market and offer that space to them at a reduced rate of rent, to try and
help them get to the point where they can grow their business and manufacture
their product.

“It's going to be very much designed for a manufacturer,” he
said,&nbsp; “(including) proper ceiling heights, proper electrical capabilities and
access to large overhead doors and things that maybe not all facilities will
have.”

By breaking down barriers to entry, Williams said companies in the
facility would be able to focus on developing their product.

He said he then hopes that those companies could move into their
own facilities as they grow into the market.

“Hopefully, in a few years time, they would be ready for a
much larger building and move them out and then move the next small
manufacturer in,” Williams said. “And ideally, we would have five or six of these
types of businesses in this structure. That would be the time to develop their
products and grow their business from then moving out and filling up our
industrial park.”

With the award, the project can move from a concept into a solid
plan. 

“Now that we've got the grant, we believe we have a site
figured out at the corner of Ninth and Commerce Parkway, which would be just
directly south of Glassman Corporation. And because we got the grant, we will now
start the process.”

To kick off the work, architectural drawings will be done and
bids for construction will be solicited.

“Now we go to that next phase, which is nailing down bids
and starting construction sometime hopefully, this summer, depending on how
quickly we can get the architectural plans done,” Williams said.

While the grant will cover $2.6 million of the project, he
said the overall cost is projected at around $3.5 million. As plans develop, finding
the remaining funds will also occur.

A requirement of the grant is a 25 percent match from the recipients.
With a $3.5 million price tag the minimum amount to meet that requirement is
$875,000.

“Projects selected must be completed within two years of the
award date,” according to the announcement. “Awardees will be provided with 50
percent of award allocation in 2022. The remaining 50 percent of funding will
be provided no earlier than January 2023.”

$2.6 million BASE grant awarded to proposed Hays microfactory

The Hays USD 489 school board on Monday discussed a cut to some student fees. However, several board members advocated even further reductions in fees.

The administration is recommending decreasing the student ID fee from $12 for Hays Middle School and $16 for Hays High School to $5 for students at both schools.

The summer weights fee, which was $35, would be eliminated. Driver's education fees would be dropped from $225 for in-district students to $175 and $275 for out-of-district students to $225.

Chris Hipp, assistant superintendent, said the $35 weights fee was costing more to collect than the district was receiving. He said school officials also thought the fee was discouraging some students from taking advantage of the weights opportunity.

Board member Meagan Zampieri-Lillpopp said $195 for enrolling a single student at the high school is just too much money for some families.

Superintendent Ron Wilson said if a student qualifies for free lunches, the fees are waived. If a student qualifies for reduced-price lunches, the fees are set at 50 percent.

The district also allows families to make payments on the fees.

"The problem there, and I'm speaking from my past history as a single dad with low income coming in," board member Ken Brooks said, "we weren't low enough for free lunches. If you have three kids in high school, that's over $555. Even making payments over the year, that's a hardship."

Zampieri-Lillpopp said, "These are shockingly high fees for families."

She said she came from a rural community where the enrollment fee was less than $50.

"Enrollment here has been a burden for me," she said.

Brooks said the high fees are a deterrent from families moving into the school district.

"I'm not going to say we're low compared to other 5A districts, but I would say we're comparable to other 5A districts in terms of fee assessment," Wilson said.

This school year, the district generated $177,000 from the $90 textbook fee. The fee is used for any curriculum materials. This could include electronic subscriptions or consumable classroom instructional materials.

In 2013, the district had to use a no-fund warrant to purchase curriculum materials, because the district had no money in its textbook fund. Borrowing money for these materials is not a recommended financial practice, said Shanna Dinkel, assistant superintendent and director of curriculum.

The district has planned curriculum reviews, which means having a balance in the textbook fund will be important to upgrading those materials, Dinkel said.

"It's about time that we drop that down," board member Allen Park said of the fees. "We're asking parents for a possible bond. ... We ought to be able to help them."

Board member Curt Vajnar said lunch tickets are yet another cost for parents. He said his family's bill was more than $1,000.

"I think the thing that you have to consider is that it is easy to reduce when you know you have revenue," Wilson said. "It is very difficult when you have to raise when you need revenue."

The school board took no action Monday night. It will consider the item again at its May 16 meeting.

Hays USD 489 school board seeks to further lower student fees

I look forward to writing these columns because I enjoy sharing stories about the innovative, caring, and persistent nature of the people who make Tiger Nation special. Today, I would like to focus on one&nbsp;alumnus&nbsp;who came close to throwing his life away before he turned 18. He spent more than a decade in prison but found redemption with the help of the caring people of Hays, America.&nbsp;

Tuan&nbsp;Huyn&nbsp;was&nbsp;3&nbsp;years&nbsp;old when he and his family fled their native Vietnam and settled in a public housing complex in Wichita. Tuan and many members of his small Vietnamese immigrant community immediately found themselves as outsiders in a new home. Life in America&nbsp;for&nbsp;Tuan almost immediately became a struggle to survive. He got into his first fight in&nbsp;kindergarten, and as he entered his teen years, he found gang life&nbsp;as a way to&nbsp;fit in, command respect, and survive on the streets.

Just shy of his 18th birthday,&nbsp;Tuan&nbsp;committed a crime that sent him to prison.&nbsp;While incarcerated,&nbsp;Tuan made a commitment to turn his life around. Until that point in his life, he’d always been a brawler. But from that point forward, Tuan decided to let his intellect and natural leadership abilities guide his direction in life. He began reading, taking college courses, and painting. His work caught the eye and respect of his fellow inmates. He went on to create an art education program that eventually attracted more than 40 inmate artists.

As he began his transition to life after prison,&nbsp;Tuan met several people who would become instrumental in his redemption story. Leslie (Chris) Hauck was the Sunflower Electric Power Corporation CEO in Hays and met Tuan through his involvement in his church’s prison and jail ministry. The two forged an incredible bond, one so strong that Chris would later refer to Tuan as “my son.” He also met Anna Shelter, whose mother ran seminars on leadership and fellowship that Tuan attended. She would later become his wife and the mother of their two&nbsp;daughters.&nbsp;

Chris took Tuan to Fort Hays State to meet some contacts on campus and explore his degree options.&nbsp;Tuan&nbsp;intended to enroll in a business program, but as they walked through Rarick Hall, Chris introduced him to&nbsp;Chaiwat&nbsp;(pronounced&nbsp;chy-what)&nbsp;Thumsujarit, a graphic design professor.&nbsp;Chaiwat&nbsp;noticed that Tuan was holding two original paintings he planned to take to a local framing store&nbsp;and was impressed&nbsp;with the artwork. The&nbsp;professor&nbsp;suggested&nbsp;that Tuanconsider graphic design as a degree option.&nbsp;

A gifted artist with no background in the principles and practices of graphic design, Tuan struggled to keep up. While other students were already adept at using computer design software on projects, Tuan only knew how to paint. He had never used a computer. While reflective of his natural creative genius and artistry, much of his early work fell below his professor’s expectations. He contemplated quitting&nbsp;school&nbsp;about a year into his studies.&nbsp;

Then it all started to click for Tuan. The persistence, creativity, and a newfound commitment to servant leadership that helped him turn his life around began to inspire his work. He began to seek and accept help from peers and his professors. And he began to find other ways to give back to the local community, including cutting hair for students and residents in a local retirement community.&nbsp;

The immense creativity of Tuan’s work, his leadership, and his ability to accept and incorporate feedback caught the eye of Kerry Soukup, an FHSU alum and an executive with&nbsp;Leo Burnett Worldwide, a&nbsp;prestigious&nbsp;advertising agency in&nbsp;Chicago. In 2014,&nbsp;Kerry&nbsp;offered the&nbsp;recently graduated&nbsp;an internship. Tuan suggested that he probably would not pass a background check and initially declined the offer. But Kerry saw something special in Tuan. She and her Leo Burnett colleagues asked for a couple of days to consider options. When she called back a few days later, Kerry didn’t offer Tuan the internship but a full-time job as an art director instead.

Tuan enjoyed a remarkable career with Leo Burnett, but in January of 2021, Tuan, the servant leader, decided it was time to venture out on his own. More than a year later, he now leads or is involved in several non-profit organizations in Chicago, including an organization he created called Chicago Peace (<a href="https://www.chicagopeace.org/">https://www.chicagopeace.org/</a>). This group works to revitalize neighborhoods by building bridges between stakeholders through partnerships, education, the arts, compassion, and entrepreneurship.

And in early 2022, Tuan, the entrepreneur, launched a business initiative in partnership with family members still living in Vietnam to bring the distinctive flavors and aromas of Vietnamese coffees to America. The new company,&nbsp;VietFive&nbsp;Coffee (<a href="https://www.vietfive.com/about-3">https://www.vietfive.com/about-3</a>), recently opened on Madison Street in downtown Chicago.&nbsp;

Many who work in higher education say that a quality education can be a transformative experience. I am one of those who believe strongly in this observation. The immense value of the Fort Hays State experience is not&nbsp;just&nbsp;found in the professional skills learned and credentials earned.

Tuan’s story demonstrates that great transformations are the direct result of the persistence of our students and the powerful relationships they forge here, relationships that break down barriers and fuel dreams for those who want to live a life of purpose and impact. FHSU didn’t create Tuan, but he did find caring people on this campus and in the Hays community who were ready to help him on his path to redemption.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Today, I would like to focus on one&nbsp;alumnus&nbsp;who came close to throwing his life away before he turned 18. He spent more than a decade in prison but found redemption with the help of the caring people of Hays, America.&nbsp;Tuan&nbsp;Huyn&nbsp;was&nbsp;3&nbsp;years&nbsp;old when he and his family fled their native Vietnam and settled in a public housing complex in Wichita. Tuan and many members of his small Vietnamese immigrant community immediately found themselves as outsiders in a new home. Life in America&nbsp;for&nbsp;Tuan almost immediately became a struggle to survive. He got into his first fight in&nbsp;kindergarten, and as he entered his teen years, he found gang life&nbsp;as a way to&nbsp;fit in, command respect, and survive on the streets.Just shy of his 18th birthday,&nbsp;Tuan&nbsp;committed a crime that sent him to prison.&nbsp;While incarcerated,&nbsp;Tuan made a commitment to turn his life around. Until that point in his life, he’d always been a brawler. But from that point forward, Tuan decided to let his intellect and natural leadership abilities guide his direction in life. He began reading, taking college courses, and painting. His work caught the eye and respect of his fellow inmates. He went on to create an art education program that eventually attracted more than 40 inmate artists.As he began his transition to life after prison,&nbsp;Tuan met several people who would become instrumental in his redemption story. Leslie (Chris) Hauck was the Sunflower Electric Power Corporation CEO in Hays and met Tuan through his involvement in his church’s prison and jail ministry. The two forged an incredible bond, one so strong that Chris would later refer to Tuan as “my son.” He also met Anna Shelter, whose mother ran seminars on leadership and fellowship that Tuan attended. Plainville businesses honored with Kan. Commerce awards

Fort Hays State University’s chapter of Technology and Engineering Education Collegiate Association (TEECA) continued its dominance in national competition this spring.

At last month’s&nbsp;annual International Technology and Engineering Education Association (ITEEA) conference in Orlando, Fla.,&nbsp;FHSU won three of the five nationally recognized individual events&nbsp;to claim co-championship all-around honors with Purdue University.&nbsp;With that performance, Fort Hays State became the ITEEA’s first three-peat national champion.

Tiger Nation has placed in the top three in the all-around every year (including four firsts) since that category was added to the competition in 2017. Fort Hays State has won 36 individual events in its 37 years of attending the national event.

This year, FHSU placed first in live manufacturing, communications team video, and teaching lesson and STEM showcase. FHSU also placed third in the robotics competition but did not field a team in the problem-solving category.

FHSU was chosen for the Outstanding Chapter Award, while two Tigers also were recognized with individual honors.

Micah Nuss, president of Fort Hays State’s TEECA chapter, was chosen for the Don Maley Spirit of Excellence Outstanding Undergraduate Student Citation. Eric Deneault, associate professor of applied technology, was honored as the Distinguished Technology and Engineering Professional.
