When photographer Paul Mobley set out to capture the soul of our country’s farm communities, he encountered an enduring rural culture that remains rooted in the principles of tradition, family, integrity and hard work.

Crisscrossing the country, from Alaska to Florida, Mobley and his camera were welcomed time and time again into the homes of hundreds of farm families.

Visit after visit, Mobley came to know the independent farmer’s spirit from both behind the lens and across the dinner table. He sought the elusive spirit of agriculture, looking for subjects that mirrored the project’s sense of risk and independence.

The resulting images show farmers with a strong sense of where they belong in the universe, a close connection to the land and their day-to-day work as it affects the rest of the world. American Farmer is on display until January.

Out of a collection of more than 200 of these portraits, Exhibits USA has distilled a selection of 45 iconic portraits showing the geographic and cultural diversity of the American farmer.

This vivid portfolio is accompanied by anecdotes and memories in the farmers’ own words that are both a testament to their enduring hospitality and a moving glimpse into the hardships and joys of a quickly disappearing way of life—one that once defined our national identity and now struggles to remain vital.

From Jim Taber, a young single father raising cattle in Montana, to Shirley Schollenberg, the daughter of Alaskan homesteaders, Mobley’s heroic photographs reveal the true face of American farming and remind us what it means to live with simplicity, contentment, and decency in a world that so often forgets.

American Farmer Exhibit on display at Fick Fossil & History Museum

ELLIS COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 7:30p.m. Monday in Ellis County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported an unknown vehicle was eastbound on Interstate 70 just east of the Yocemento exit. 

The driver moved the vehicle from the driving to the passing lane. The rear of the unknown vehicle's trailer struck a 2010 Dodge Aveo driven by&nbsp; Austin Lee Vineyard, 26,&nbsp;Disputanta, Virginia, who as already in the passing lane. After impact, Vineyard lost control of the Dodge and it spun into the median.

EMS transported Vineyard to Hays Medical Center. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident. The KHP reported no additional details.&nbsp;

Three-day weather outlook

October started a new year of enrollment for 4-H members in our eight community clubs and their involvement in 40 project areas! Each community club elects representatives to serve on the 4-H Council, much&nbsp;like Student Council. This is an additional layer of leadership and communication learning as the youth and parent representatives share information to and from their clubs. Additionally, they serve on committees to plan county-wide events such as our Achievement Celebration and 4-H Club Day.

The Achievement Celebration was held a week ago and provides an opportunity for fun, fellowship, and award recognition. The committee selected an 80s theme for a Totally Rad&nbsp;Celebration,&nbsp;and we had lots of neon attire and ice cream sundaes.

All 4-H members are encouraged to keep a record book. Now, I know that record books aren’t everyone’s favorite thing but it does provide good life skills practice in setting goals, keeping track of related finances and activities, and sharing the struggles and successes as our 4-H members learn.

Each year at the end of the celebration, I remind 4-H members to turn to their family members to tell them Thank You! I will add my thanks to club leaders, project leaders, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and neighbors who all have a hand in helping a 4-H member learn, grow, and thrive!&nbsp;

NWester: Historic barn provides unique event center in Wilson

Development of the Hays Chamber’s 2023 Community Guide is
underway, with a deadline for entry of Nov. 21.

Set for release during the chamber’s annual awards banquet, the 12,000
printed booklets will help Ellis County residents and visitors find the many
unique events and locations in the area.

“It has
anything from retail to restaurants, many of our nonprofits are actually
featured in there as well,” said Hays Chamber President and CEO Sarah Wasinger.
“We think western Kansas is very unique and special. … We also have things that
we can explore, like the Sternberg Museum, or the fact that we have a pretty
wonderful environment for things like our waterpark, and tennis courts and
pickleball courts. All the fun things.”

She said the guide can be a great
tool to explore all that Hays and Ellis County have to offer.

“People
visiting from out of town use this as a wonderful tool,” Wasinger said, “but
we think it's a great tool for people who even live here.”

She said
when she first joined the chamber four years ago, she was surprised by the entries in the guide — even as a lifelong Hays resident.

“You can
even re-explore and reconnect with your own community just by looking at this
publication,” Wasinger said. “And I think that's what makes it special too.”

As a
literal guide to attractions and happenings, she said it can also serve as a
tool to highlight life in Ellis County.

“It's
meant to be kind of a multi-blended publication where we even put it in
recruitment packets for businesses that are recruiting,” Wasinger said. “They
can actually connect with our chamber and request those packets, we put them
together, and then they can hand them out to people who are looking at moving
into Hays and Ellis County.”

“We
really feel like we have a compelling story to tell as a community and the nice
thing about this piece is it covers our diversity and our range,” she
continued.

For those area businesses and
organizations looking to be included in this year’s guide, Wasinger said there
are several options available.

“We
actually have some very affordable ways for them to kind of become a part of
this piece,” she said.

“We have
different features that are going to be three inches by three inches in size, and
our businesses can actually participate with that for as little as $250.”

The
pricing of inclusion from there depends on the level of Chamber membership and
placement size.

“If they
would like to find out kind of where they rank with their discount and level of
membership, we do have those flyers currently on the website, they can kind of
start looking at that piece, and then call us or visit us in person, or we'd be
happy to come to your location,” Wasinger said.

The
chamber can also help with designing the spot. 

“Our
team, of course, does a lot of the design work,” Wasinger said. “And then our
friends at the Hays Convention and Visitor's Bureau, Melissa Dixon and Brandon
Cooley help us do some photography, as well as some of the writing for that
and great things happen when people collaborate.”

“It's
definitely something that I look forward to, kind of stretching my creative
muscle and really getting into it,” said Hays Chamber Vice President of
Marketing and Communications Mariah
Legleiter. 

Wasinger
said the business or organization shares its creative vision and the
spot can be designed from there.

Along

“If you've
got an ad in the publication, you'll have your ad linked to your direct
location for your website, or Facebook, depending on how your business wants to
do that,” Wasinger said. “And then our friends at Grow Hays, the Hays Convention
and Visitors Bureau and the Downtown Development Corporation, all four of our
organizations actually had this linked to this publication too, directly on our
website.”

“So,
it's not just those 12,000 impressions,” she continued. “We think it's probably
closer to something like maybe even 20,000 by the time you look at all the
different traffic that is going to those locations in those sites.”

Hays community guide production underway; entry deadline approaching

There is a 40 percent chance of continued snow through the afternoon, with accumulation of up to 2 inches possible.

The daytime high is expected to be 32 Monday, with an overnight low again dropping into the teens. Skies will clear overnight, with cold and dry conditions expected through the rest of the week.

Highs through Thursday are expected to be in the mid- to upper-30s, with overnight lows in the low- to upper-teens.

Hays PD Activity Log, Oct. 30-Nov. 5

Reservations are being taken for the free Thanksgiving Day Community Feast for residents of Ellis County.

Once again, the meal is being organized and run by the Ellis County Ministerial Alliance. Those attending will notice two major changes from previous years, said the Rev. Josh Gelatt, who chaired the ECMA organizing committee.

He said one major change is the feast this year will be a sit-down meal only, with no drive-through option. The only exception is that First Call for Help, which is partnering with the ECMA, will deliver meals to the elderly, homebound, or disabled individuals.&nbsp;

Everyone else will select from one of seven host sites located throughout Hays. As of press time, those sites were First United Methodist Church, 305 W. Seventh; New Life Center, 1701 E. 22nd; North Oak Community Church, 3000 Oak St.; St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 2900 Canal Blvd.; St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, 2901 E. 13th; First Baptist Church, 12th and Fort Streets; and The Gamers Guild, 200 E. Eighth. All sites will serve at 1 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 24.

Gelatt, lead pastor at North Oak, said, based on previous years, the committee is planning on feeding around 900 people.

Reservations for the sit-down meals are available at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.nex-tech.com/thanksgiving">www.nex-tech.com/thanksgiving</a>. The deadline is 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, or until all the spaces are filled, said Laura Allen with First Call for Help. She encouraged people to sign up early in order to get the site of their choice. All sites are wheelchair accessible except for St. Michael’s.&nbsp;&nbsp;She said additional sites may be added before the deadline.

All Meals on Wheels clients will automatically receive a home-delivered meal on Thanksgiving, Allen said. Other homebound individuals may call her at First Call for Help, (785) 623-2800, by Nov. 18, to reserve a meal.

The earlier reservation deadline for home deliveries is to give her time to organize the delivery routes and secure enough drivers, Allen said. In addition to providing meals for the homebound, First Call will also deliver a meal to the person’s caregiver, she said.&nbsp;

Gelatt said First Call expects to deliver 100 to 200 meals.

He said The Press, once again, will cater all the meals. The menu will consist of roast turkey and dressing, garlic mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and a roll with butter. Each host site will provide beverages.

The other major change this year is there will be no free sacks of groceries, Gelatt said. The group that had partnered with ECMA in the past to collect the non-perishable food items, sort them, and bag them, was unable to do so last year and again this year.

“We were unable to get the logistics in place this year (to collect, sort and bag the items),” Gelatt said. “We hope to revisit that next year.”

In answer to the question of why no drive-through meals this year, Gelatt said the original idea of a “community feast” was to encourage Ellis County residents to come and “share a meal together.”

He said the committee discovered this year that “coming out of a pandemic, many people feel isolated, disconnected, and alone. That has steered us toward offering different locations where people can break bread together and maybe make a new friend.”

He cited a&nbsp;study by the World Health Organization that found depression and anxiety have increased 25 percent worldwide since the pandemic.

The study, which was released in March, showed that young people in particular are at risk. “(T)he pandemic has affected the mental health of young people, and ... they are disproportionally at risk of suicidal and self-harming behaviors,” the study found.

Allen also noted that in the past when the Thanksgiving Feast was offered at only one location, the venue would usually fill up rapidly. Attendees would often have to wait in line until people finished eating and left before they could be seated. This resulted in people feeling rushed and unable to linger and visit.

Having multiple sites, which was tried out in 2021, will eliminate this problem, she said. “The whole idea is offering fellowship and company — and not just a meal.”

She added any church, organization, or business wanting to host a site is still welcome to contact her at (785) 623-2800. The only requirement is they must be able to provide tables and seating for a minimum of 20 people. Being handicapped accessible is a plus, but not mandatory, she said.

Allen is also the person coordinating volunteers. She needs individuals to help pack meals for delivery, deliver meals to the homebound, and pick up meals from the caterer to deliver to the host sites. Many of the host sites also need greeters and servers, she said.

Kansas Wetlands Education Center has been recognized as one of the world’s best wetland visitor centers. Their success was announced at the Conference of the global Wetlands Convention, known as Ramsar COP14, underway in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Star Wetland Centre Award is a new initiative to recognize best practices in eco-tourism and education at wetlands. It is coordinated by Wetland Link International (WLI), a support network for staff and volunteers at 300 wetland visitor centers.

Kansas Wetlands Education Center is one of 23 centers worldwide, and one of only 2 in the United States, that have been selected by an international panel of experienced wetlands professionals.

“It's an honor for the Kansas Wetlands Education Center to be included in a list of other awesome wetlands centers internationally,” says Curtis Wolf, Director of the Kansas Wetlands Education Center.

“While our wetland center is only a small dot on the map, we are encouraged to know we are contributing to a larger shared goal of educating people across the world about nature, conservation, and appreciation of our natural resources."

“The judges were particularly struck by the high-quality programming,” says Chris Rostron, the Head of WLI and leader of the Star awards process.

“Kansas Wetland Education Center accommodates very wide visitation thanks to good disabled access and audio tours, along with a strong online offering including 360-degree virtual tours and the 'watcha doing rob' video series. &nbsp;

The Stars have been awarded to 23 wetland visitor centers around the world at a ceremony at the 14th&nbsp;Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar COP14).

International Star recognition for Kansas Wetlands Education Center

Jenson Miller of Gorham&nbsp;is one of three northwest Kansas winners in the 2022 Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day poster contest. The contest is sponsored annually by the Kansas Department of Transportation and other traffic safety organizations.

Miller received first place in the 5- to 7-year-old age group for the northwest region.&nbsp;He was awarded a bicycle from the Kansas Turnpike Authority and helmet donated by Safe Kids Kansas.

The poster contest aims to encourage youth to think about traffic safety and present their ideas through their artwork. A total of 497 Kansas kids ages 5 to 13 participated this year.

🎙 Post Podcast: New Ellis Co. businesses reflect ever evolving area economy

International Education Week will be observed at Fort Hays State University with food, art, fashion, and much more starting Monday.&nbsp;

Graduate assistants Misael Trejo and Erica Meneses have been instrumental in planning the second annual International Fashion &amp; Food Festival, scheduled Monday from 5 to 7 p.m.

“It will be a place where people can come and enjoy the food and performances and learn more about their culture,” Meneses said. “It’s like a showcase.”

Hays Sister Cities will provide financial sponsorship of the evening’s festivities, which aligns with the Sister Cities’ “people to people” mission. Countries represented include Ghana, Nigeria, Venezuela, Mexico, Spain, Japan and Hungary. International students, faculty, and staff will prepare and serve food that they feel represents their country.

Trejo and Meneses, who taught English to youngsters in Beijing in 2019, are committed to promoting international education and reaching out to FHSU’s international students.

“We had the experience of going to another country not knowing what to expect and also feeling homesick,” Trejo said.

“Now, coming back and seeing our international students, you don’t know what they are feeling. They could be missing their family. Especially during holidays. That is something that motivates me and makes me very passionate about our international students.”

Trejo said the primary intent of the fashion and food festival is to encourage domestic students, faculty, and staff to reach out to international students and make them feel included in campus life.&nbsp;

“Because they all have different stories,” he said. “They are very unique.”

Included in the week’s events is an open house Monday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. to celebrate the new location of the offices of International Student Services and Global Affairs. The new office suite is 014, Memorial Union.

Trejo and Meneses said they want to encourage FHSU students and staff to participate in the “You are Welcome” campaign, which will be going on in the Memorial Union, where flags representing the countries of all FHSU international students will be flown. Individuals can write notes to international students to make them feel welcome on campus.

“I know what it feels like to go to a new country and not know the language,” Meneses said. “I want to make sure our international students feel like they’re at home and that they have a great time while they’re at Fort Hays State.”

COLBY — The November Third Thursday art gallery walk is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 17 at four Colby locations.&nbsp;

The Colby Community College gallery in the Cultural Arts Center will feature Great Bend artists David Barnes, Krystall Barnes, Alyssa Rose Bliven, Robert Joy, Rex Rosenberg, and Mary Kottmann, as well as local photographer Casey Denneler. Refreshments will be available.&nbsp;

Pieces by the Colby High Plains Art Club will be displayed at the Prairie Museum of Art &amp; History. Downtown, local artist Rodney Zimmerman will have his work at Orange., and Los Angeles-based freelance illustrator Cadie Long will have a new series of art at the Jonas Gallery.

Over the past several years public opinion polls have gotten a lot of heat — some of it deserved, some of it not — for not accurately predicting election results.

Public opinion is only as accurate as the sample&nbsp;of voters polled&nbsp;and what&nbsp;those voters&nbsp;are willing to tell pollsters.&nbsp;As such, election outcomes will always be the best gauge of public opinion.

 </figure>First, moderate Democratic candidates can be competitive in, and even win, statewide races. We knew this already, but now we know that this can hold true even with an unpopular Democratic president in office.This year the polls told us that some statewide races would be close.&nbsp;They were right. Once all the votes are counted, Laura Kelly will narrowly win re-election.&nbsp;The Attorney General race was also close.&nbsp;Both Democrats in those races outperformed Joe Biden’s 2020 vote share.&nbsp;Even before the election,&nbsp;Kelly’s approval rating was much higher than Biden’s, which boded well for the governor.Exit polling conducted&nbsp;in Kansas&nbsp;by Fox News&nbsp;tell&nbsp;an intriguing&nbsp;story&nbsp;about Kansas voters.Most of the negative campaign ads against Kelly — and other Democratic candidates — tried to use the president as a liability, and the exit polling shows Biden has a 63% disapproval rating in the state.But&nbsp;a&nbsp;majority of&nbsp;Kelly&nbsp;voters said their opinion of President Biden had nothing to do with their vote.&nbsp;And interestingly enough, 11%&nbsp;of Kelly voters said they used their vote to express opposition to Biden.Even among&nbsp;voters who expressed moderate disapproval of the president, 57% voted for Laura Kelly.This suggests that the so called “Kansas Democrat playbook” — where statewide Democratic candidates distance themselves from national Democrats, especially unpopular ones — still works&nbsp;and&nbsp;we’ll likely see it used in years to come.Second, Kansans seem to like the status quo in Topeka… at least when it comes to how the branches of government interact with each other.While Republicans will decisively control the state legislature, and Laura Kelly held on to the governorship, Amendment 1 failed.&nbsp;This amendment, also known as the “legislative veto” would have dramatically shifted the balance of power had it passed. It would have changed our system of checks and balances as we know it.While the vote was close, it looks like the amendment will&nbsp;fail by a narrow margin.I suspect this outcome was somewhat motivated by confusing ballot language,&nbsp;but also by an&nbsp;age-old&nbsp;reluctance to give any branch of government more power than they currently have.The state house races certainly seem to maintain the status quo. Democrats flipped one House seat in Johnson County, but still fell two seats short of blocking the Republican supermajority in the chamber.The retention of all seven Supreme Court justices is another testament to the status quo. Generally, justices are retained but this was a different year&nbsp;where those races could have been much more politicized than usual due to&nbsp;conservative backlash to&nbsp;the&nbsp;Hodes&nbsp;decision which established abortion as a right protected by the state constitution.Kansans certainly gave us some nail biters this year&nbsp;with several races too close to call as Election Day&nbsp;came to a close.&nbsp;We’ll&nbsp;probably continue to&nbsp;see close races&nbsp;in the years to come&nbsp;as&nbsp;Kansans&nbsp;grapple with a rapidly changing political environment.Alexandra Middlewood, PhD&nbsp;is an Assistant&nbsp;Professor of Political Science at&nbsp;Wichita State&nbsp;University.
