Hays Pride
Hays Pride is delighted to announce that the City of Hays has officially proclaimed June 2024 as Pride Month. The proclamation was signed on June 13 by Mayor Shaun Musil in a gesture of support for the LGBTQ+ community and its allies during the month of June.
The proclamation acknowledges the importance of fostering an inclusive and accepting community where diversity is celebrated and awareness is encouraged. June is a significant month for the LGBTQ+ community because of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. Pride Month commemorates years of struggle for civil rights and the ongoing pursuit of equal justice under the law for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community, as well as the accomplishments of LGBTQ+ individuals.
"We are deeply grateful to the City of Hays for this meaningful recognition," said Anniston Weber, board member of Hays Pride. "This proclamation not only highlights the progress we are beginning to make as a community but also reinforces our commitment to ensuring that Hays remains a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone. Our heartfelt thanks go out to the Hays community for their support and allyship."
Throughout the month of June, Hays Pride will be hosting a series of events and activities designed to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, raise awareness, and foster connections within the city. These events will provide opportunities for education, reflection, and celebration, inviting all members of the community to come together in the spirit of unity and pride.
Please feel welcome to join Hays Pride for Pride in the Park on Saturday, June 22 at 1 PM at Frontier Park West. Bring your friends, family, pets (with a leash), sunscreen, and pride flags. Food, drinks, and fun will be provided.
Pride Prom is another June event hosted by Hays Pride. From 12 – 4 PM at Arcade 11 enjoy a kid friendly pride prom experience. From 11 PM – 1 AM at Arcade 11 the event will be 18+. Dress up, dress down, dress however you like. This event is intended to be a fun gathering space for those who may not have been able to have a traditional prom experience. It also serves as another opportunity to connect with the LGBTQ+ community in Hays.
Hays Pride extends an open invitation to everyone to participate in the Pride Month celebrations. Your involvement and support are crucial in continuing to build a community where everyone feels valued and respected.
