After a calm, pleasant Wednesday with a high of 80, the National Weather Service in Dodge City is warning of strong wind moving into the Hays area by 7 p.m.

North winds are expected to be sustained at 30 to 40 mph, gusting to 60 mph. A high wind warning will be in effect from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday. Travel could be hazardous for high-profile vehicles such as semis.

There is a 30 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms in the overnight hours Thursday.

Skies are expected to begin to clear by Friday, with daytime highs Friday through Sunday in the mid- to upper-50s. Overnight lows through the weekend will drop below the freezing point, the NWS said.

There is another slight chance of precipitation Sunday night, increasing to a 30 percent to 50 percent chance of rain Monday and Tuesday.

Pleasant Wednesday — then winds will whip the area tonight

A 42-year-old Ohio man was found guilty and faces probation
for serving as a lookout during an armed robbery at the Hays Dollar General last July.

Bryan Anthony Parsley pleaded no contest Monday in Ellis County District Court and was found guilty
of conspiracy to commit robbery, a level seven person felony, for his role in
the July 21, 2022, armed robbery of the Dollar General Store at 1208 E. 27th,
Hays.

According to court documents, Parsley agreed to help
Batalova Senuoke commit armed robbery. Senuoke, armed with a handgun, threatened
the Dollar General employee and forced the employee to give him cash.

Ellis County Attorney Robert Anderson said during Monday’s
court hearing that Parsley entered the store with Senuoke and helped check to
make sure there were no children in the store.

Anderson said Parsley eventually said he did not feel comfortable
and left the store, stealing a package of toilet paper.

Senuoke carried out the theft and he, along with Parsley and
a third person fled the scene. They were eventually spotted by a highway patrol
trooper in Oakley. They fled an attempted traffic stop on Interstate 70 at a
high rate of speed before a trooper performed a tactical vehicle intervention
and both vehicles rolled. 

As a result of Parsley’s pleading to the conspiracy to commit
robbery charge, the state agreed to drop the theft charge.

Due to his criminal history, Parsley could be sentenced to between
19 and 23 months in prison for the felony conviction and can be sentenced to
probation in lieu of a prison sentence.

At the time of sentencing, Parsley will have served
approximately 10 months in the Ellis County jail and with good time credit
could have just a few months to serve in jail.

Parsley committed the crimes while on parole in Ohio and in
Kansas a special sentencing ruling allows the court to run the prison sentence
consecutively with the parole sentence from out of state.

According to court documents, the state has recommended time
served or probation to allow Parsley to be extradited back to Ohio to serve his
sentence there.

He will remain in custody pending sentencing in May.

For his role, Senuoke faces several years in prison. He pleaded
guilty earlier this month to aggravated robbery.

According to the plea agreement, Senuoke has an open case pending
in Kentucky and a parole violation in Ohio. 

He is expected to be sentenced to between 10 and 20 years in
prison in the Kentucky case and as a result Ellis County is expected allow him
to be extradited to Kentucky where he will serve out his time in both the
Kansas and Kentucky case.

Under the plea agreement in Kansas, Senuoke faces approximately
120 months, or 10 years, in prison. The sentence would run concurrent with the Kentucky
prison sentence.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Wednesday reported just two new COVID-19 cases had been identified in Ellis County from April 8 and 14.

KDHE reports updated case numbers weekly on Wednesdays.

Ellis County fell to the the low-incidence category (see map below), along with several other north west Kansas counties. Ness, Rooks and Jewell counties were in the only counties in Kansas in the high-incidence category.

KDHE: New COVID cases in Ellis Co. continue to decline

Members of the Hays Fire Department, along with the Dodge City Fire Department, recently completed their annual Federal Aviation Administration certification training for airport firefighting operations.

The training is conducted using a mobile aircraft prop provided through a partnership between the Missouri University Fire and Rescue Training Institute and the Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute.

"This simulator provides, as realistic as we can, fires in the cockpit, fires in the passenger compartment, fires that would be in the cargo area, on the outside of the plane, and in pans (on the ground) that simulate a fuel spill," said Ryan Hagans, Hays fire chief. "They can also have fire along the outside of the plane and the wings, brake fires and tire fires.

"It provides as real-world training as it can for these types of aircraft incidents."

The training is required each year by the FAA for all airport firefighting operations in the nation.&nbsp;

The Hays Fire Department pays&nbsp;$10,500 to KU for the training, and spends another $250 for the propane it uses.&nbsp;

"But we're able to split some of the costs with the Dodge City Fire Department," Hagans said.

The prop uses propane and has emergency shut-offs inside the simulator to carefully control the exercise.&nbsp;

The simulator is controlled from a separate unit, where a MUFRTI employee is able to monitor the temperature and propane flow, and also shut down the simulator with the touch of a button.&nbsp;

Much of the day-long training utilizes handheld fire lines, practicing attacks with the fire trucks on site at the airport fire station. "That way we get a chance to exercise those trucks and all the firefighters get a chance to drive them and operate the equipment."

Each Hays firefighter is certified in this type of firefighting, according to Hagans, although not every fire department that provides aircraft standby does that.

"We have every one of our members certified to provide this type of service. That's because we're a smaller department and we need everybody to be fully trained up in all our aspects that we do."

Airplane fires use more foam and dry chemicals to eliminate the oxygen the fire needs to sustain itself.

A plane fire often requires more personnel than a typical house fire.

"When we do our stand-bys for commercial passenger flights, we have one firefighter at the airport. If an incident would occur, we're all coming from (the downtown fire station)."

The fire department's new training facility does provide the opportunity to train with live fire, Hagans said, but on a much-reduced scale compared to the airplane mock-up.

"This does provide our guys the opportunity to get together with more than just their shift, a chance to build a little more camaraderie. It gets us as close to reality as we can."&nbsp;

The Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting program was created in 2001 and serves more than 100 airports in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa with funding provided by the Missouri Department of Transportation and the FAA.

Hays firefighters train for emergency airplane fire at Hays airport

Knowing people in the grocery store, the space and security for children to play in parks or yards and a shared sense of ownership with your neighbors to help and make life better for each other are some of the things that make this life sweet. Smaller usually feels like an advantage in rural communities, except there are fewer people to help financially support the cost of community resources. Farmers and other landowners cover a large portion of the communities’ financial needs through property tax payments to support local municipalities, schools, hospitals and other taxing entities. Incredibly rural communities often have a choice between shockingly high taxes or a glaring lack of important community services. Bond issues are a way for the community to declare their opinion of whether some of the taxes are worth it. This spring, our school district like many other across the state, has a bond issue on the upcoming ballot. The school is asking our community to make improvements to existing facilities to accommodate unmet and future needs. Bond measures are really asking whether you and your neighbors want to join together and spend money out of your own pocket on an investment in the community. All investments should be considered carefully by weighing the cost against the risk and reward. In our ultra-polarized world, some people will quickly jump to one side or the other of this issue. Some will oppose the measure because the cost is too high or they believe the improvements are not needed. Others are strongly in favor of all investments in education and community improvements regardless of the cost. This community has been fortunate to have had citizens who balanced fiscal responsibility with a vision for a community that is a great place to live. As I look around, it is easy to see all the places where people have made investments of time and money to make our community great. I often marvel about how people have been proactive and really cared about the future of our community. It’s not like that everywhere. I appreciate the past investments and feel a sense of obligation and desire to do my best for the future of this place.&nbsp; Personally, I am typically pro-investment because community growth and improvements to our schools and other facilities make for a high quality of life that attracts new people and helps us all to thrive. However, the idea of more taxes pushes me to temper that reaction with an evaluation of the project before deciding my stance. It is my responsibility as a voter and community member to evaluate the proposed bond against my own desires and the needs of our community. The vote is a few weeks away, and I have been investigating the proposal, discussing it with my fellow voters and seeking knowledge to fill gaps in my understanding. If you have a bond issue in your community, I hope you will take the time to evaluate what is being asked and if the solution is the right course of action. Getting to the decision right can have a big impact on the future of your community. I haven’t made a decision on the bond issue yet but am confident I will walk into the polling booth as an informed voter with the best interest our community in mind. I also have faith that my fellow community members have the same feelings of responsibility and ownership of the decision they make. TREGO COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 9p.m. Tuesday in Trego County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Ford F150 driven by Lori Hemingway, Colorado, was eastbound on Interstate 70 three miles west of WaKeeney.&nbsp;

The driver lost control of the pickup when strong winds blew the trailer around. The pickup entered the south ditch, rolled and coming to rest on the drivers. The trailer came unhooked and was on the drivers side to the east of the vehicle.

EMS transported a passenger Douglas William&nbsp;Loubier, 53, Colorado, to Trego County&nbsp;Lemke Memorial Hospital. Hemingway was not injured. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Three-day weather outlook

Have you ever stepped into the water on the first fishing trip of the spring only to find your waders leaked? Or lost a nice fish because the line on your reel was old and snapped? Or even found while trying to make the&nbsp;first cast of the year that your reel wouldn’t work at all?&nbsp;All of the above are scenarios&nbsp;that can easily be avoided with a little prior planning. So&nbsp;here are a few tips to help make you ready for action&nbsp;when your buddy calls and screams&nbsp;into the phone&nbsp;“The fish are bitin’!”

Check your gear early. We all lose tackle each year to rocks and “stick fish,” so go through your tackle box, make a list and stock up. Check your waders for leaks. If they didn’t leak the last time you took them off, they probably won’t leak now, but be sure; it’s better than an unexpected boot full of cold water. Line on fishing reels should be changed every few years; the more often you use it the more often it should be changed. You can&nbsp;buy&nbsp;spools of line and DIY, or most sporting&nbsp;goods stores have&nbsp;a&nbsp;machine to do it for a small fee.&nbsp;If you fish from a boat, hopefully you’ve gone over it by now to make sure the batteries are good, the motor starts and runs well and the trailer&nbsp;tires aren’t flat.&nbsp;Also be certain to have life preservers on board for every passenger, because if stopped by wildlife and parks on the water or at the dock, they will check that.&nbsp;If you hate wearing life jackets while fishing like most of us do, look into some of the new technology that now allows life jackets to be much smaller, thinner and less obstructing. &nbsp;

We were just leaving town the other day when my wife snapped her fingers in the air and stated “Darn, I forgot to get my&nbsp;new&nbsp;fishing license.” That excuse won’t fly with a game warden if you get&nbsp;checked&nbsp;only to discover your fishing (or hunting) license has expired, so be sure yours is up-to-date. If you are 65, you can&nbsp;purchase a lifetime&nbsp;combination hunting / fishing license&nbsp;for&nbsp;only&nbsp;$42.50&nbsp;that’s good until you turn&nbsp;74 and no longer need a license; it’s the deal of the century!&nbsp;Have you ever bought your hunting license late in the season, and grumbled about it only being good for a short time until New Year’s Eve? Well grumble no more as that now has changed. Or even found while trying to make the&nbsp;first cast of the year that your reel wouldn’t work at all?&nbsp;All of the above are scenarios&nbsp;that can easily be avoided with a little prior planning. So&nbsp;here are a few tips to help make you ready for action&nbsp;when your buddy calls and screams&nbsp;into the phone&nbsp;“The fish are bitin’!”Check your gear early. We all lose tackle each year to rocks and “stick fish,” so go through your tackle box, make a list and stock up. Check your waders for leaks. If they didn’t leak the last time you took them off, they probably won’t leak now, but be sure; it’s better than an unexpected boot full of cold water. Line on fishing reels should be changed every few years; the more often you use it the more often it should be changed. You can&nbsp;buy&nbsp;spools of line and DIY, or most sporting&nbsp;goods stores have&nbsp;a&nbsp;machine to do it for a small fee.&nbsp;If you fish from a boat, hopefully you’ve gone over it by now to make sure the batteries are good, the motor starts and runs well and the trailer&nbsp;tires aren’t flat.&nbsp;Also be certain to have life preservers on board for every passenger, because if stopped by wildlife and parks on the water or at the dock, they will check that.&nbsp;If you hate wearing life jackets while fishing like most of us do, look into some of the new technology that now allows life jackets to be much smaller, thinner and less obstructing. &nbsp;We were just leaving town the other day when my wife snapped her fingers in the air and stated “Darn, I forgot to get my&nbsp;new&nbsp;fishing license.” That excuse won’t fly with a game warden if you get&nbsp;checked&nbsp;only to discover your fishing (or hunting) license has expired, so be sure yours is up-to-date. The birds that
 stop in at Cheyenne Bottoms are usually just visitors flying to and 
from bigger stops. That's not the case for many of the small animals 
living in the area. Earlier this month, Tom Bidrowski, migratory game 
bird program manager for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, 
went to the skies for his annual survey of waterfowl around the state. 
Kansas Wetlands Education Center Curtis Wolf said Bidrowski's aerial 
photos paint a grim portrait of Cheyenne Bottoms.

"We all know the
 severity of the drought right now and what its effect has been on 
Cheyenne Bottoms, but I think it's always nice to get a visual 
confirmation of that," Wolf said. "I think for myself, if nothing else, 
seeing just how brown and dry the area surrounding the whole area is was
 a little bit surprising to me. Looking at the fields and the grasses 
that, in April, should have some green in them definitely are not that 
way."

U.S. Drought Monitor updated its website last Thursday. The 
"exceptional drought" area - the worst on the drought chart - now covers
 all of southwest and south central Kansas, extending to a line midway 
into Russell County and into the corner of Ellsworth County. A band of 
storms Friday caught only the edge of the line.

Many bird species 
have selected other migratory patterns this year due to the conditions, 
but many of the less-mobile animals, like turtles and reptiles, at the 
Bottoms are simply stuck with the dry conditions. The aerial photos 
provide the scope of how far those animals need to go to find water.

"They
 definitely have some challenges just surviving the conditions we have 
here," Wolf said. "Obviously, some of those things can somewhat go a 
little bit dormant while we don't have water, and at least for a time 
period, can survive just by not being out and about. Other things might 
be able to leave the area and find some water depending on their ability
 to move."

More than 43 percent of Kansas is listed in the "exceptional drought" category now, compared to just two percent a year ago.

Arrest ended in pursuit that injured HPD officer

A 32-year-old South Carolina native will have to wait a bit longer to learn his fate after he was convicted of robbing a Hays
salon in March last year.

Irving Brooks III was set to be sentenced in Ellis County
District Court on Monday for the March 18, 2022, robbery at All the Rage Studios on north Vine Hays. But after a lengthy discussion with Chief Judge Glenn
Braun, his sentencing was continued to later this year.

Judge Braun said he was unhappy with Brooks’ plan for what
happens after he is released from jail.

Brooks <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/a11dfbf0-e383-4276-8895-0e592785276d">pleaded guilty in March</a> to entering the salon,
threatening an employee, taking $24 and then leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase that started in Russell and ended on north Vine Street in Hays.

A Hays law enforcement officer was injured and three
vehicles were damaged in the pursuit.

Brooks, an Army veteran, had just three prior misdemeanor
criminal convictions on his record and, as a result of the plea agreement, he
could be sentenced to between 34 and 38 months in prison. Because of his
criminal history, he would be eligible for probation in lieu of jail time.

Brooks’ attorney Alex Herman submitted a motion for
probation to the court and argued Brooks should be sentenced to probation
because he has been in the Ellis County jail for more than a year, he is not
from Kansas and that crime was “not done with malice.”

Herman said he believes drug programs offered to people on
probation would be beneficial to Brooks.

When Brooks addressed the court, he said that he was on
drugs when the crimes occurred and that his time in jail helped him take responsibility
for his actions.

He said he was planning to go back to South Carolina where he
wants to be an underwater welder. He also said while in the Ellis County jail
he became ordained and wants to start a ministry.

During the discussion, Braun said he believes there
were “gaps” in Brooks’ post-release plan.

He said Brooks’ had more than a year jail, where he became
ordained and wrote multiple books, but failed to create a plan.

Brooks pleaded with the judge, saying he “doesn’t deserve
to be here, in jail.”

He also wants to return to the south to be able to see his
10 children. Kids who Braun said he is not supporting now, but will have to start
paying child support.

Braun also questioned how Brooks, a native of South
Carolina, ended up in Florida, Denver, Colorado and Kansas.

Braun said he did not, “have a lot of confidence in (Brooks’)
plan going forward.”

The continuation, Braun said is an opportunity for Brooks to
create a plan.

The sentencing will be continued at a later date.

Tuesday marks the
annual Fort Hays State University Giving Day, an opportunity for alumni and
friends of the university to support various campus organizations and groups.

“This is
a 24-hour fundraising event that supports all areas of campus,” said Carolyn Tatro, Fort Hays
State University alumni engagement strategist.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/be739a87-60a8-4ecd-9ef0-faa76b2a4006">And with
the Kansas Comprehensive Grant Match Program among the programs available to choose
from this year, supporters could see their donations doubled.</a>

“This is
a great opportunity to donate to that fund because, again, donations will be
matched,” Tatro said. “And so we potentially at Fort Hays could have an
opportunity to get about roughly $5 million for student scholarships.”

But for those looking to direct
their gift to other specific areas of the university, 61 other projects are available to donate to during the day, including FHSU colleges, departments and student organizations.

Day isn’t just a fundraising event, but an opportunity to impact student
success and the future of Fort Hays State University,” said Erica Fisher,
director of annual giving for the FHSU Foundation, in the event announcement.</a>

FHSU’s Greatest Need is also
available, allowing FHSU to determine the best use of the gift. 

“And so
if you cannot decide what area you would like to support, you can kind of put
that money in an unrestricted fund, and we'll use it in somewhere on campus
that needs it the most,” Tatro said. “And the needs change from year to year. So there's always an
opportunity to help.”

Last year, during the second annual Giving Day,
“810 Tiger fans from 40 states came together to
invest in areas across campus that were in need of financial support,” according
to the FHSU Foundation. “Many donors elected to support more than one project
leading to just under 1,000 gifts.”

“Gifts started rolling in early in the morning, and the momentum continued throughout the entire day,” said Jason Williby,
president and CEO of the FHSU Foundation, after last year’s Giving Day. “When
the last online donation was made Thursday evening, I had goosebumps. Fort Hays
State University has once again united to strengthen our mission. We are
extremely grateful for the outpouring of support from those who made a gift to
those who helped spread the word about Giving Day. The impact of our collective
giving will be felt for years to come.”&nbsp;

Like last year, those that donate through the day will receive a thank
you item.

“Every
gift will make a difference,” Tatro said. “But as we have done in the past
couple of years, if you contribute $10 or more, there are opportunities to get
some cool Tiger swag. We have stickers, coasters, and a really cool-looking tea towel. So, you know, there's a little bit of something in this for
everybody, but every single gift on the website will make a difference.”

And
while Giving Day is officially April 18, the dedicated donation website has already
been launched, and over 500 gifts totaling over $65,000 have been recorded.

if you cannot decide what area you would like to support, you can kind of put
that money in an unrestricted fund, and we'll use it in somewhere on campus
that needs it the most,” Tatro said. “And the needs change from year to year. So there's always an
opportunity to help.”Last year, during the second annual Giving Day,
“810 Tiger fans from 40 states came together to
invest in areas across campus that were in need of financial support,” according
to the FHSU Foundation. “Many donors elected to support more than one project
leading to just under 1,000 gifts.”“Gifts started rolling in early in the morning, and the momentum continued throughout the entire day,” said Jason Williby,
president and CEO of the FHSU Foundation, after last year’s Giving Day. “When
the last online donation was made Thursday evening, I had goosebumps. Fort Hays
State University has once again united to strengthen our mission. We are
extremely grateful for the outpouring of support from those who made a gift to
those who helped spread the word about Giving Day. The impact of our collective
giving will be felt for years to come.”&nbsp;Like last year, those that donate through the day will receive a thank
you item.“Every
gift will make a difference,” Tatro said. “But as we have done in the past
couple of years, if you contribute $10 or more, there are opportunities to get
some cool Tiger swag. We have stickers, coasters, and a really cool-looking tea towel. So, you know, there's a little bit of something in this for
everybody, but every single gift on the website will make a difference.”And
while Giving Day is officially April 18, the dedicated donation website has already

The Kansas Geological Society met last week (4/11) to recognize and name eight new oil fields and four infield wildcat discoveries in Kansas. There are 17 new fields identified across the state so far this year. Kansas regulators approved 17 new drilling locations last week, 370 so far this year, compared to 438 a year ago. There are ten new drilling permits east of Wichita and seven in Western Kansas, including one in Barton County and one in Stafford County. Kansas operators have spudded 341 wells so far this year, compared to 385 at this time last year. Total footage is down about 21% from a year ago. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service says Kansas operators completed 27 wells in the week through April 13th, with 11 west of Wichita and 16 in the eastern half of the state. That's 546 completed wells statewide so far this year compared to 467 by this time a year ago. The Kansas Rig Count was down slightly despite slight gains east of Wichita. According to Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service, the tally in Western Kansas was 23 active rigs, down three from the week before. The weekly Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes shows 748 active drilling rigs in the US, down three rigs. At 588 rigs, the oil count was down two. The count of gas drilling rigs was down one at 157 rigs. The breakouts show five fewer directional rigs, three fewer horizontal rigs, and five additional vertical drilling rigs compared to last week. The total in Oklahoma was down three rigs, Texas was down two. New Mexico, Pennsylvania and Louisiana were each up one. The Energy Information Administration says crude inventories grew by 600,000 barrels from the previous week, at just over 470 million barrels. Stockpiles are about three percent above the five year seasonal average.&nbsp; EIA said gasoline and diesel inventories each dropped last week. Both are well below the five-week average for this time of year. The weekly government report showed US crude imports down by nearly a million barrels a day at 6.2 million barrels per day. That equals the average for the last four weeks, which is down by just under one percent from the same four weeks a year ago. Crude production in the US increased by 112,000 barrels per day last week to 12.34 million barrels per day. The government predicts better pump prices than last year, even as those prices start to rise. The Energy Information Administration forecasts average pump prices for the year just under $3.50 a gallon coast to coast. EIA is predicting lower average crude-oil prices than last year. The report also forecasts lower crack spreads, the term used to describe the markup at the refinery between crude oil and gasoline prices. At the extremes, EIA expects summer gasoline prices this year to range from $3.08 to $3.95 per gallon Environmental activists are hoping to accelerate the greening of America's number-four crude-producing state. Colorado activists are hoping to ban new oil and gas drilling in the state within seven years. The news releases and other announcements all use the word "fracking" but the measure being considered would ban all new drilling permits by the year 2030. The group submitted language to the Colorado Legislative Council to place a measure on the 2024 statewide ballot. It would need just over 124,000 signatures to force a statewide vote. A report filed in the Canadian Parliament asserts that country will need thousands of additional oil and gas workers. The government projects 14,000 job openings from now through 2031, an increase of 13%. The projection includes oil and gas extraction and does not include support industries. Exxon Mobil is talking to Pioneer Natural Resources about a possible acquisition. The Wall Street Journal report prompted an 8% spike in the stock price at Pioneer, the number three producer in the Permian Basin.

Hays Post staff earns 13 honors from Kansas Press Association 🦅

I am going to take a brief break today from our 4-H project highlights to focus on a crucial part of 4-H learning – our volunteers!

April 16 -22 is National Volunteer Week and it is one of many times that it is important to recognize and thank the many people who help Extension in providing learning opportunities for 4-H youth.&nbsp;

We have eight 4-H clubs across Barton County&nbsp;and eight in Ellis County&nbsp;<a></a>and each of them have 2-3 registered volunteers who serve as club leaders. They are actively involved in shaping a young person’s experience in 4-H by teaching parliamentary procedure, demonstrating teamwork and communication, and sharing information.&nbsp;

Additionally, we have several volunteers who work with specific project areas to teach skills from the shooting sports project to foods and nutrition. Sharing their skills and expertise shows youth&nbsp;the importance of giving back to their community and how to share something they are interested in for a lifetime.

Leaders for 4-H Livestock, Junior Leaders, 4-H Ambassadors, and 4-H Council provide older youth with opportunities to expand their leadership and communication skills with guidance and experience.&nbsp;

Two other important groups&nbsp;of volunteers are definitely related to the county fair! Fair superintendents assist the judging process, display exhibits, answer questions, and provide a positive environment during the fair. Additionally, the Barton County Fair Association is a group of volunteers with a goal to provide a fun, family-oriented event to showcase 4-H and agriculture in our communities. They spend countless hours planning, repairing, and organizing so many details!

BERAN: Thankful for our 4-H volunteers

GREELEY COUNTY — One person died in an accident just before 7 a.m. Monday in Greeley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Pontiac Montana driven by Mary Alice Murray, 60, Scott City, was westbound on Kansas 96 just east of Kansas 27.

The van traveled off the roadway to the right, began to rotate in a clockwise manner and the driver was ejected. The van came to rest facing northeast in the ditch.

EMS transported Murray to the Greeley County Hospital in Tribune where she was pronounced deceased. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.
