If you had one thing you could change about the USD 489 school district, what would it be?

Our school district has a lot of great programs in place that are good for our students, educators, staff, and facilities. I would support these programs, not take them for granted, and help them progress.

We have a wonderful community and school district and have current resources that are meant to keep the community involved. A more informed community builds trust and helps everyone to have a more educated opinion. I want to ensure we do not take the value of this communication lightly. We have to keep working on ways to grow the community’s trust by helping everyone understand the processes and staying ahead of possible confusion. At the same time, building trust means listening to the wins and opportunities that are voiced. This doesn’t mean everyone’s opinions should be followed, but they should be heard and respected.

What is your opinion of the current school board? Do you think you could compromise with the incumbents who will remain on the board?

Over the last several years, I have seen positive growth in the decision-making and vision of our school board. Their combined efforts and support led to a unanimous approval of our school bond in 2022. This year, the school board worked with administration, educators, and staff to increase pay levels to retain these valuable people and help recruit talent to this district.

As a prospective school board member, I would approach working with school board members with a spirit of collaboration, communication, and respect. The goal of a school board is to make decisions that serve the best interests of the students and the community. Finding common ground and working together to achieve these shared objectives is essential. While disagreements may arise, the focus should remain on what is best for our students, educators, and the district’s vision and mission. Effective governance often involves productive dialogue and consensus-building, leading to policies and decisions that benefit the entire school community.

What is your opinion of the Hays USD 489 administration?

Like other school districts, our USD 489 Administration has had many challenges, including COVID-19, staffing, and the passing of the school bond. We have a strong administration team that has worked hard to support the best interests of our school district. They realize that not all of their ideas will be popular, and in many situations, there are many choices, but one must be made to keep our programs moving forward. Demonstrating the courage to take on this responsibility through the good and bad times is much appreciated. Having the full support and guidance of the school board reflects that appreciation.

What do you think the board’s role should be in the day-to-day operations of the district?

The school board's role in the day-to-day operations of a school district is not to directly manage the daily activities but to provide guidance, set policies, and ensure that the district runs smoothly. The board's primary job is to create and implement policies and rules that set the direction for the district, such as curriculum standards, budget allocation, and personnel practices. This includes ensuring that the district's actions align with its long-term goals and that resources are used wisely. Additionally, they hire and supervise the district superintendent, who is responsible for the day-to-day management of the schools, ensuring that they follow the board's policies and achieve the district's goals.

Furthermore, the school board acts as a bridge between the community and the district, gathering input from parents, teachers, and constituents to make informed decisions.

They also oversee the budget to ensure that funds are used effectively and that legal and ethical standards are met. While the board doesn't run the schools day-to-day, their role is vital in setting the overall vision, policies, and direction of the district, while the&nbsp;superintendent and school administrators manage the daily operations.

What role do you think the board should have moving forward with the bond issue projects?

The school board's core responsibility is to oversee and govern school bond issue&nbsp;projects, ensuring alignment with the district's strategic objectives. This oversight encompasses financial accountability and transparency in project execution. The board stays updated on project budgets to keep them on course and within approved limits.

Additionally, they're entrusted with guaranteeing that bond funds are utilized as intended and managed accordingly. The board requires accountability and transparency from the project management team, with regular updates on project advancement, expenditures,&nbsp; and outcomes. The school board is the custodian of financial and strategic integrity, safeguarding the district's long-term goals and the responsible use of bond proceeds.

Hays USD 489 BOE candidate: David Clingan

The Docking Institute of Public Affairs recently released the annual Kansas Speaks Survey of public opinion. A panel of 485 adult residents of Kansas ages 18 and older were surveyed online to assess their attitudes and opinions regarding various issues of interest to Kansas citizens. 

This year’s survey covered topics including quality of life, the economy, government, politicians, and election integrity, a range of public policy issues, and the state of education in Kansas.

“Kansans’ rating of Kansas economy became slightly better than 2022, with slightly more people feeling Kansas economy was very good or excellent, and slightly fewer feeling Kansas economy was getting worse,” said survey co-author Jian Sun. “However, the ratings were still lower as compared with 2021. With continuing high inflation, more Kansans felt concerned that Kansas’ economy would seriously threaten their welfare or their family’s, and the rating of Kansas as a place to live were the least positive in three years.”

Select findings from the 2023 Kansas Speaks Survey include:

• Of those surveyed, 46.3% of the respondents believed Kansas was on the “right track,” while fewer (30%) felt Kansas was on the “wrong track” this year; this is less positive than the previous two years&nbsp; • Support for Medicaid expansion in Kansas in 2023 continues to be at about 70%&nbsp; • On the issue of Medicaid expansion in Kansas, 49% of the respondents felt the issue was highly or extremely important as they decide who gets their vote to represent them in the Kansas Legislature, compared to 8% who felt the issue was not important at all&nbsp; • Most (80%) respondents felt all education levels (high school, technical/vocational, community colleges, and universities) are important or very important to the overall economic development of Kansas&nbsp; • Housing was also a concern for Kansans, with 71.6% of the respondents saying that they were concerned about the cost of housing

“Housing is an issue not just important to a family’s quality of life but also to a community’s ability to attract and retain a workforce,” said Brett Zollinger, Docking Institute director and survey co-author. “Very similar to 2022, more than 70% of Kansans are concerned about the cost of housing in their communities again this year.”

In a question about affordable housing that was in the survey for the first time this year, strong majorities feel that a lack of affordable housing -- both for purchase and for rent -- is having a negative impact on their community.&nbsp; Almost 70% shared that they would have difficulty finding a home to buy in their price range right now in their community.&nbsp;

Two political scientists from other Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) universities collaborated with Docking Institute staff on this year’s survey, Alexandra Middlewood from Wichita State University and Michael Smith of Emporia State University.

The two policy fellows worked closely with Docking Institute researchers in establishing survey content and on methodological decisions. Smith led on survey content related to election security, diversity in representation of elected officials, perceived effects of climate change, and abortion attitudes/policy questions. Middlewood led in developing content that focused on reasons for gun ownership and political ideology questions.

Majority concern about affordable housing noted in FHSU Docking Kansas Speaks survey

A musician and educator who inspired and delighted generations in Hays with his folk music died on Wednesday.

Joe F. Dolezal, 80, of Hays, and his polka band were the featured entertainment at the Hays Oktoberfest for 35 years, including several weeks ago at the 2023 event. He also was a music educator for more than 30 years, 28 of those years in Hays.

Born to Elmer and Marcella (Kalivoda) Dolezal, Joe F. Dolezal was born on Sept. 16, 1943, in Belleville.

After three years at Belleville High School, culminating in his graduation in 1961, Joe went to Fort Hays State University. In 1965, he pursued a major in music education, and in 1970, he attained his master's degree in music education.

According to Hays Memorial Chapel, Joe took on the role of Charley Dalrymple in "Brigadoon." It was during this time that Sue Nelson, his future wife, first encountered Joe's remarkable talent and striking appearance. On Nov. 1, 1963, in Hays, they tied the knot, both having successfully completed their degrees in music education.

Joe dedicated two years to teaching in Plainville, followed by three years in Belleville and 28 years in Hays.

In his later years, Joe's focus centered on the Joe Dolezal Polka Band. He held a deep passion for Czechoslovakian folk music and culture, and he was devoted to playing his German-bought button accordion.

Craig Manteuffel, assistant executive director from KSHAA, was a choral music student who was in three Hays High musicals that Dolezal directed between 1978 and 1980.&nbsp;

“Joe was an extremely gifted musician and educator,” Manteuffel said. “His attention to music detail was second to none, and his rehearsals were led by a true professional.”

Manteuffel worked alongside Dolezal for two years in teaching choir classes at Hays High.

“I was truly blessed to have this amazing man in my life as a teacher, mentor and colleague," he said.&nbsp;

Phil Kuhn, president of Hays Oktoberfest, worked with Dolezal for several years while Dolezal led the entertainment committee. Dolezal was responsible for organizing musical performances, including those featuring his own group, The Joe Dolezal Polka Band

“I know that he inspired a lot of people through his music, not only to listen but also to play different instruments too,” Kuhn said.

Nick Werth, former president of The Volga German Centennial Society, emphasized Dolezal's involvement with the organization, where he served as Oktoberfest's primary musical attraction for 35 years.

“Joe's music was probably some of the best polka that I've heard. Over the years, we've lost many good bands, and [they] have all gotten old on us and passed away, moved on. Joe was one of the last greats, and boy, we're surely going to miss him. We're going to miss him greatly,” Werth said.&nbsp;

Both Werth and Kuhn remember Dolezal's comedic and bright attitude.

“His sense of humor was something else,” Kuhn said. “He knew how to command a room, he really did.”&nbsp;

“Joe was probably one of the happiest guys. [He] always liked to joke around whether he was feeling good or not. He always had a joke, always had a smile and no matter where you’re at, Joe always said hi. He knew everybody,” Werth said.

Cheryl Maxwell Glassman, a former student of Dolezals in his choir class in 1970, recalls him as vigorous and full of spirit.

“I remember the first time I saw him in choir because he was extremely dynamic and vibrant. You could not ever think of sleeping or not paying attention when you were in his class because he was so energetic. You could tell his passion for music was just exuding from him,” Glassman said.

Glassman recently portrayed Catherine the Great as Dolezal took the stage at this year's Oktoberfest.&nbsp;

“It was almost like your kindred music spirits, so to speak, because it was so invigorating to hear him play. To just be on the stage with him at Oktoberfest was always really a cool thing,” she said.

Kathy Dreiling, a former Dolezal student, expressed he had a remarkable impact on her life, guiding her to discover herself and setting her on the right path.

“I went on to do music for a living for a long time, played in different groups and bands, and worked as a writer and a stable singer for studios,” Dreiling said. “It all goes back to Joe. He was an incredible influence, not only for me but for a lot of my classmates."

The Oktoberfest Hays Facebook Page paid tribute to Dolezal in a post.

“First the light went out, and now the music has faded. Our Oktoberfest Family has lost another wonderful soul this week. Yesterday, our dear friend, board member, and Oktoberfest polka-meister, Joe Dolezal, passed away. 

"While we are all in shock and mourning at the loss of our friend, we ask that you join us in praying for his family and friends during their time of grief. Say hello to Janel for us Joe. ... Nothing will ever be the same..”

Janal A. Moore passed away in April, she was vice president of the Volga German Society and historian for the Oktoberfest Committee. She was honored at Oktoberfest in September.

The funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Hays First United Methodist Church with Rev. Craig Hauschild officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Allen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. today at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church. Memorials in Joe’s memory may be made to the Hays High Music Department.

 </figure>“I know that he inspired a lot of people through his music, not only to listen but also to play different instruments too,” Kuhn said.Nick Werth, former president of The Volga German Centennial Society, emphasized Dolezal's involvement with the organization, where he served as Oktoberfest's primary musical attraction for 35 years.“Joe's music was probably some of the best polka that I've heard. Over the years, we've lost many good bands, and [they] have all gotten old on us and passed away, moved on. Joe was one of the last greats, and boy, we're surely going to miss him. We're going to miss him greatly,” Werth said.&nbsp;Both Werth and Kuhn remember Dolezal's comedic and bright attitude.“His sense of humor was something else,” Kuhn said. “He knew how to command a room, he really did.”&nbsp;“Joe was probably one of the happiest guys. [He] always liked to joke around whether he was feeling good or not. He always had a joke, always had a smile and no matter where you’re at, Joe always said hi. He knew everybody,” Werth said.Cheryl Maxwell Glassman, a former student of Dolezals in his choir class in 1970, recalls him as vigorous and full of spirit.“I remember the first time I saw him in choir because he was extremely dynamic and vibrant. You could not ever think of sleeping or not paying attention when you were in his class because he was so energetic. You could tell his passion for music was just exuding from him,” Glassman said.Glassman recently portrayed Catherine the Great as Dolezal took the stage at this year's Oktoberfest.&nbsp;“It was almost like your kindred music spirits, so to speak, because it was so invigorating to hear him play. To just be on the stage with him at Oktoberfest was always really a cool thing,” she said.Kathy Dreiling, a former Dolezal student, expressed he had a remarkable impact on her life, guiding her to discover herself and setting her on the right path.“I went on to do music for a living for a long time, played in different groups and bands, and worked as a writer and a stable singer for studios,” Dreiling said. “It all goes back to Joe. He was an incredible influence, not only for me but for a lot of my classmates."<figure>

I am running for school board for the students. I think that each student possesses the capability to be great. I believe that with support, guidance, and educational opportunities can achieve greatness, or even beyond. We as a school board need to continue to identify areas where we are not meeting those needs and address them. But, also search for ways to improve the educational experience of each student, so that they can achieve their own personal success.

Change is an action or thought that produces some result. To some change is adjusting, building, challenging, transforming, upgrading, but also unknown and scary. I would like to change the stigma that “change” is a bad thing. Each day things are changing in our district, and at the end of the day we want those changes to help make the students feel safe, a sense of belonging, and also successful.&nbsp;

&nbsp;What is your opinion of the Victoria USD 432 administration? Do you think you could work with the current administration moving forward?

The administration at USD 432 is high-performing in many ways. Committed, goal-setting, passionate, solution-oriented, and strong leader are a few objectives to describe the administration. Student safety and success are the priority, and finding opportunities to make these a reality are of upmost importance. Administration is approachable and encourages and empowers staff to academically grow to achieve their own leadership roles and positive change. I currently serve on the school board and feel that I can continue to have a positive influence on the district along with the administration.&nbsp;

I am currently serving on the school board. I, along with the other board members, contribute my own unique talents and visions while collaborating as a team. We have listened to the needs of the students, teachers, parents, community, and building needs. We have updated and implemented new curriculum. Improved communication by having a Facebook page, posted board agendas online, and updated handbook and policies. Security cameras were updated and more added. We did increase the base salary and have added an assistant principal.

The school board plays an important role in keeping the school on track and setting policies that affect our children and school. The school board also sets the vision and goals for the district and keeps them accountable for results. As school board members, we are responsible for making sure administrators lead our teachers and staff in the direction of the district putting out successful and well-educated students.

What are your opinions of the school district’s discipline policies and how they have been applied?

The discipline policies are looked at on a regular basis in the district. Technology, social media, and the world in general keeps changing it seems by the minute. You can have the “best” policies put in place, but then you have an unexpected situation occur that does not fit under a certain policy. I believe administration has done what they could with the current policies in place, and have noticed the need for them to be revised as well.&nbsp;

What do you think the school district should do to improve student test scores and academic performance?

The fact of the matter is that it is a collaborative effort to improve test scores and academic performance. Students and parents play an intricate role in this process by preparing, studying, and seeking out assistance from teachers when problems arise. Higher test scores can happen if we realize the process is a collaboration.

Three-day weather outlook

Hearing loss doesn’t just mean an older adult needs to turn up the TV. It’s been linked to a range of health problems, including dementia.

The latest aging research not only shows the two are connected, it’s also leading scientists to believe that hearing loss may actually be a cause of dementia.

This emerging area of research has huge implications, says Frank Lin, MD, PhD, director of the Cochlear Center for Hearing and Public Health. at the Bloomberg School. Some 37.5 million Americans have trouble hearing, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

A key question researchers have: Could hearing aids reduce the risk of a person developing dementia?

Lin explains the connection between the two conditions and where the science is headed.

If you have hearing loss, you have a greater chance of developing dementia, according to a 2020 Lancet commission report that lists hearing loss as one of the top risk factors for dementia.

Hearing loss can make the brain work harder, forcing it to strain to hear and fill in the gaps. That comes at the expense of other thinking and memory systems. Another possibility: Hearing loss causes the aging brain to shrink more quickly. A third possibility is that hearing loss leads people to be less socially engaged, which is hugely important to remaining intellectually stimulated. If you can't hear very well, you may not go out as much, so the brain is less engaged and active.

Quantifying hearing loss’s impact

According to the World Health Organization, hearing loss is estimated to account for 8% of dementia cases. This means that hearing loss may be responsible for 800,000 of the nearly 10 million new cases of dementia diagnosed each year.

Johns Hopkins is leading a large National Institute on Aging study to see if hearing aids can safeguard seniors’ mental processes. The study has multiple locations and has recruited nearly 1,000 people ages 70–84 with hearing loss. One group is provided hearing aids, while another group receives aging education. In July, Public Health on Call interviewed Dr. Frank Lin about his research using a randomized control study. Everyone was followed for three years with cognitive skills test every 6 months. Hearing interventions were shown to slow down cognitive decline in those with more risk factors for cognitive decline. A hearing aid is a low risk intervention that can help prevent cognitive decline in those with other risk factors.

Hearing loss has long-term effects on health. It’s believed to increase the risk for falls and depression. It also leads to higher health care costs: People with hearing loss have an increased rate of hospitalization.

Please encourage your loved ones to go get their hearing checked and find hearing aids if they have hearing loss. October is also National Protect Your Hearing Month so remember your ear plugs or earmuffs when you are around loud sounds. Prevention is important.

KOERNER: Hearing loss linked to health problems, including dementia

I don’t have many pet peeves, but the few I do have occasionally jump the fence and run wild for a spell. One of those pet peeves involves a small group of outdoorsmen we kids used to call “slob hunters.” You know, the ones that go afield each hunting season only for the bragging rights to having killed something. They shoot from their pickup; they shoot from the road; they hunt after hours without licenses (known as poaching); they shoot at any kind of sound and movement; they blaze away at targets much too far away to identify. They’ll empty a deer rifle at anything running through the brush in the same township. They’ll empty an automatic 12 gauge at anything with wings. The safest place to be is often right in front of them as they swing wildly to fire at some blur streaking across the field, be it Whitetail, Appaloosa or Angus. Years ago, I bird hunted ONE time with a coworker who would fire two shots, then aim.

Some years back Joyce and I had garnered permission to trap and hunt turkeys on a dynamite out-of-the-way piece of ground northwest of here along the Little Arkansas River. Each time we were there we either saw deer or were astounded at the amount of fresh deer sign. The land owner had tentatively given us permission to deer hunt also, so the weekend before deer season opened that year, we drove there one evening at dusk intending to do some last-minute scouting. The owner was there fixing fence, and said he had understood we would be bow hunting. When he heard we would instead be rifle hunting, his reply was “Absolutely not; I don’t want any big rifles on this property, and I’ll tell you why!” He proceeded to tell us a disturbing story about how, some years back, he and his wife were cutting tree limbs and branches along the alfalfa field in front of us when a shot rang out and the bullet zipped through the trees mere inches from them both. “We had run the chain saw for two hours, so anyone should have known we were there” he added. This was the work of a slob hunter who had obviously shot at sound and movement along the river, or missed their intended target very badly (I can’t remember the last time I saw a deer use a chainsaw!) The hunter safety course devotes an entire chapter to firearms handling and safety, which includes subjects like positive target identification and knowing exactly what lies beyond your target.

That same year I had asked permission to trap a stretch of the river bordering the same afore mentioned property but owned by someone else who also lives nearby. Shortly after harvesting my fall turkey just across the river, I pulled into the other landowners drive to introduce myself and was greeted with an icy stare. He had heard my shot and was very uneasy at my presence there. As our conversation progressed, and as I convinced him of my trustworthiness, he became very cordial and friendly, and related to me the reason for his uneasiness; in the past few years, two of his horses have been inexplicably shot! It’s terribly far-fetched to think that both could have been from stray bullets, and I’m here to tell you that if a horse in any way resembles a whitetail deer through your rifle scope, you need eye surgery and a biology lesson!

Another major “pet peeve” of mine is trespassing and hunting without permission, and with the myriad of fall hunting seasons upon us, allow me to offer some pertinent information.&nbsp;

In Kansas, law requires hunters to gain land owner permission even on unmarked property, so no signs of any sort are required for that landowner to regulate hunting on their land. Let me also note the difference between “hunting with permission only” and “hunting with WRITTEN permission only.”

 “Hunting with permission only” allows for any form of permission, written, verbal or over the phone, and requires the land owner’s signature on any ticket or formal complaint issued by the conservation officer. “Hunting with WRITTEN permission only” is satisfied only by permission in writing, and gives law enforcement personnel free reign to issue citations, and/or make arrests with no further authorization. By the way, land owners, the fish and game dept. furnishes both the signs and permission slips at no cost for this type of posting. 

I’m sure we hunters have all seen the bright purple paint on fence posts and old tires along property lines. These purple markers along property boundaries also mean “hunting with WRITTEN permission only,” and corresponding compliance is required.

Fellow sportsmen, we don’t need to give hunting and trapping any more black eyes, so please be absolutely certain of your target when hunting and always err on the side of safety if you’re not sure. Get the required permission to be on someone else’s property and make sure that landowner understands exactly how you will be using their land.

 </figure>I don’t have many pet peeves, but the few I do have occasionally jump the fence and run wild for a spell. One of those pet peeves involves a small group of outdoorsmen we kids used to call “slob hunters.” You know, the ones that go afield each hunting season only for the bragging rights to having killed something. They shoot from their pickup; they shoot from the road; they hunt after hours without licenses (known as poaching); they shoot at any kind of sound and movement; they blaze away at targets much too far away to identify. They’ll empty a deer rifle at anything running through the brush in the same township. They’ll empty an automatic 12 gauge at anything with wings. The safest place to be is often right in front of them as they swing wildly to fire at some blur streaking across the field, be it Whitetail, Appaloosa or Angus. Years ago, I bird hunted ONE time with a coworker who would fire two shots, then aim.Some years back Joyce and I had garnered permission to trap and hunt turkeys on a dynamite out-of-the-way piece of ground northwest of here along the Little Arkansas River. Each time we were there we either saw deer or were astounded at the amount of fresh deer sign. The land owner had tentatively given us permission to deer hunt also, so the weekend before deer season opened that year, we drove there one evening at dusk intending to do some last-minute scouting. The owner was there fixing fence, and said he had understood we would be bow hunting. When he heard we would instead be rifle hunting, his reply was “Absolutely not; I don’t want any big rifles on this property, and I’ll tell you why!” He proceeded to tell us a disturbing story about how, some years back, he and his wife were cutting tree limbs and branches along the alfalfa field in front of us when a shot rang out and the bullet zipped through the trees mere inches from them both. “We had run the chain saw for two hours, so anyone should have known we were there” he added. This was the work of a slob hunter who had obviously shot at sound and movement along the river, or missed their intended target very badly (I can’t remember the last time I saw a deer use a chainsaw!) The hunter safety course devotes an entire chapter to firearms handling and safety, which includes subjects like positive target identification and knowing exactly what lies beyond your target.That same year I had asked permission to trap a stretch of the river bordering the same afore mentioned property but owned by someone else who also lives nearby. Shortly after harvesting my fall turkey just across the river, I pulled into the other landowners drive to introduce myself and was greeted with an icy stare. He had heard my shot and was very uneasy at my presence there. As our conversation progressed, and as I convinced him of my trustworthiness, he became very cordial and friendly, and related to me the reason for his uneasiness; in the past few years, two of his horses have been inexplicably shot! Exploring Outdoor Kansas: Pet peeves running amuck!

LURAY — It’s been a while since the gym at Luray’s school building has been packed for a competitive high school basketball game against a rival opponent.

But on one day a year, one can almost hear the cheering while walking into the building that was once the home of Luray High School.

On the third Saturday of October, craft vendors and shoppers pack the gym and other parts of the school, as well as other buildings and many outdoor venues in Luray, which is in Russell County.

The Luray Craftique usually draws a large crowd, and this year’s pleasant fall weather brought almost 2,000 people to town. It’s a big deal for the residents of Luray, whose population is just north of 150.

“We never see that many people in one day,” said Monica Mullender, one of eight community members who organize the annual craft fair. “Seeing our little town flourish like this for one day is amazing.”

Everything about this event emits goodwill.

This year, more than 140 vendors signed up to peddle their wares, while shoppers were able to get a head-start on some Christmas shopping.

The admission fee was a non-perishable food item or a monetary donation that goes to the community food pantry.

Several food trucks or trailers offered a variety of food and drinks for shoppers. And this year, Todd Schneider from nearby Paradise brought his trolley to town to help transport folks to various drop-off points.&nbsp;

“That helped so much,” Mullender said. “He had five different stops for people who couldn’t walk all over town, so this was a plus. And 1,500 or more people trying to park in our small town can get chaotic. Some can’t get a very close parking spot.”

Veteran shoppers could be spotted from a block away, pushing or pulling wagons with their purchases.

Some folks said they came just to browse, enjoying the pleasant fall weather.

The booths featured items that ranged from any homemade craft imaginable to food items such as jellies and honey or pumpkins and everything in between.

However, this craft fair isn’t limited to homemade items.

“Pretty much everything goes,” Mullender said.

Vendors came from all over Kansas and even from other states.

A Wisconsin resident who visits the area to hunt every year began bringing a cooler of cheese to the craft show a couple of years ago.

This year, Mullender said he quadrupled that amount and still sold out by 1 p.m.

“It’s always an exciting day for our town,” she said. “We love having all these people in our community.”

Mullender said the craft fair got its start about six or seven years ago when community members were trying to come up with ways to increase items for the town food pantry.

“It was small that first year,” she said. “There probably weren’t more than 15 booths. But we hoped it could grow.”

From its humble beginning to today, the craft fair had 144 vendors register this year.

The event was re-named the Luray Craftique when it joined forces with Vesper’s antique show a couple of years ago. So, of course, some of the buildings in the downtown area now have antiques for sale.

“It’s nice to see people of all ages here,” Mullender said. “Some families meet here to shop for the day.”

It’s definitely a family affair for Mullender.&nbsp;

Her mom, Melinda Walker, helps at the food stand in the American Legion building along with her older sisters, Miranda Colglazier from Rush Center and Misty Bradley from Salina and some of their children.

Mullender and Colglazier have even opened their own small business in Luray – Trashy Treasures Sisters.

The name spawned from the idea of people giving Colglazier things they might otherwise be thrown away.

Keeping in mind that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, “she made it useful for someone else,” Mullender said.&nbsp;

Their treasures shop features items such as bath bombs and homemade soap – and anything that Colglazier might have refurbished.&nbsp;

Several of the craftique booths featured refurbished items, whether it be repurposed old furniture or yard art made from discarded farm tools.

“There is such a great variety,” Mullender said. “It’s fun to see some people making something out of nothing.”

Mullender said the committee is always thinking of ways to improve the craftique.

“We’ll have a wrap-up meeting this next week,” she said, “and after the first of the year, we’ll start all over for next year."

If you had one thing you could change about the USD 489 school district, what would it be?&nbsp;

USD 489 does a great job preparing students for college. College level and concurrent credit classes are available for those who are university-bound. Since not all students are going to college, more attention needs to be given to industrial arts and careers that do not require a college degree. Non-college-bound students need additional career counseling.&nbsp; Many of these kids will be staying in Hays. We need to pair them with businesses that offer mentors and apprenticeships. These will be our future business owners, electricians, beauticians, plumbers and contractors. There are good-paying careers available for Hays High School graduates. We need to do a better job of preparing and directing these kids while they are still in school.

What is your opinion of the current school board? Do you think you could compromise with the incumbents who will remain on the board?&nbsp;

This is really a process vs. product question. It doesn’t always look pretty, but the outcomes have usually been satisfactory. The current board has been positive in several areas. They have shepherded through a successful school bond. As pointed out during the candidate forum, the current superintendent has been in place for five years and that lends itself to continuity of operations — something that had been lacking.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As far as compromising with the incumbents, absolutely. What this question is really asking is, “Do you respect other people’s opinions? Do you listen? Can you negotiate?” Yes, to all of those. Somehow the word compromise became a dirty word. Every healthy relationship, yes, EVERY HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP requires compromise to work. That is true in your personal and professional life. We can’t just fight out every issue and tally winners and losers. We are part of a community and it doesn’t work when either side simply wants to dictate to the other. We all want what’s best for our kids, so we should be able to work together.

The USD 489 administration, from what I have witnessed, genuinely cares about the students. Superintendent Wilson is thoroughly engaged in the matters of the school district, the bond, and student achievement.&nbsp; Again, from what I have seen and heard from him and how he has presented himself at board meetings, he is trying to lead the district on a path of continual improvement. He references “from good to great” often but actually backs it up with actions. He was very much in favor of offering free breakfast to all students in the district again. That program ended after the previous school year. The principals in all the USD 489 schools are advocates for their students and committed members of the community.&nbsp;

The board’s job is to arbitrate, not dictate. The board is not going to review every textbook and every syllabus to make sure it falls in line with what we think should be taught in a particular class. That is not reasonable or possible. If there are issues, however, that arise between parents and teachers or teachers and administrators that cannot be resolved, then the board will need to look at the issue and arbitrate.

Hays is blessed. We do not have to deal with many of the challenges faced by larger school districts. Do we really want seven board members trying to sway the day-to-day operations of our schools? That sounds chaotic.&nbsp;&nbsp; We have good kids and an involved community. We should be able to model for our kids how you can build consensus that benefits everyone and maintain a high level of trust with our educators and administrators.&nbsp;&nbsp;

What role do you think the board should have&nbsp;moving forward with the bond issue projects?&nbsp;

Oversight is the primary task of the board going forward. The board needs to hold the general contractor accountable and be able to tell taxpayers they did, in fact, get what they paid for. There are several projects active at this time. Keeping these projects on track is in everyone’s interest. With inflation where it is currently, moving the projects along as quickly as possible, without sacrificing quality, is very important.

Have you received money or in-kind donations from individuals, businesses, groups&nbsp;or PACs outside of the school district?

This is an easy one. Yes, I have received money from someone outside the school district. My brother, Alan, donated $30 to my campaign, and he lives in Virginia.
