KDOT announces approved October bids in northwest Kansas

Mustard plants such as field pennycress, bushy wallflower, flixweed, tansy mustard, and blue mustard in wheat fields often are not noticed until the mustards start to bloom in the spring. As a result, farmers often do not think about control until that time. Although it is possible to get some control with spring herbicide applications, mustards are much more difficult to control once they have flowered and often have already reduced wheat yields by then.

To minimize yield losses, mustards should be controlled by late winter or very early spring before the stems begin to elongate or bolt. If mustards are present in the fall, they can be controlled by various active ingredients. You can look for products containing Group 2 ALS-inhibiting herbicides.

Most ALS-inhibiting herbicides control winter annual mustards very well. However, there are populations of bushy wall flower (treacle mustard) and flixweed in Kansas that are ALS-resistant and cannot be controlled by these products. Alternative herbicides will be needed to control these populations. Also, be aware that some of the Group 2 herbicides have long rotation intervals to other crops.

Group 27 herbicides can control ALS-resistant mustards. Other options to control ALS-resistant mustards are Group 4 herbicides.

Group 27 and Group 4 herbicides have little to no residual activity, thus will only control weeds that have emerged and are actively growing. Applying them with fertilizer in January or February when weeds are dormant will not provide good mustard control. In addition, special care should be taken to ensure wheat is fully tillered when 2,4-D is applied to avoid reducing tillering.

In the late winter or early spring, blue mustard is perhaps the most difficult of the winter annual broadleaf weeds to control because it bolts very early. To be effective on blue mustard, herbicides typically need to be applied in late February or early March. Blue mustard is more difficult to control than tansy mustard with 2,4-D because blue mustard has often already bolted by the time 2,4-D can be safely applied to wheat. Thus, 2,4-D is often applied too late to be effective on blue mustard.

Flixweed and tansy mustard should be treated when they are no larger than two to three inches across and two to three inches tall. As these plants become larger, control decreases dramatically. Ester formulations of 2,4-D and MCPA are more effective on tansy mustard and flixweed than amine formulations. Field pennycress is easier to control than tansy mustard or flixweed. Herbicide applications made before the pennycress bolts are usually effective.

Crop rotation with corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, or sunflowers is a good way of managing mustards as long as they are controlled in the spring before producing seeds. Crop rotation will usually result in a gradual reduction of mustard populations in the future as the seedbank in the soil decreases.

Always consult the herbicide label for the most current use requirements.

CAMPBELL: Control of mustards in wheat, timely treatment is important

The kickoff for "Christmas Magic" has begun.

This is a local program where we make up gift bags for veterans, the elderly and house-bound folks who will have no one else to remember them at Christmas.

This program receives no funds through United Way, etc. It is completely local and made to happen by Hays area residents watching out for one another.

Our elves deliver to people in apartments, individual homes, assisted living and nursing homes.

This year, our sixth, we will be delivering 120 bags.

To get our numbers we contact the various agencies who assist our veterans and shut-ins, LINK staff and our local nursing homes and they give us their numbers. So far, with God's help, we have been able to meet the numbers given to us each year.

Our gift bags are filled with full sized item such as Pantene 2-in-1 Shampoo &amp; Conditioner, Vaseline Hand &amp; Body Lotion, a deck of playing cards, a stress ball, a large-print word search book, cookies, candy canes, a bottle of body wash, a back scratcher, etc.

You can sponsor a bag for a donation of $25 per bag. (The actual value of each bag is just under $45.)

If you choose to sponsor a bag you can attach a Christmas card to the bag with a greeting from yourself or your family.

Our group makes absolutely no money on this program, nor do we charge any administrative costs to be taken from monies donated. In fact, we kick off the program each year with a $500 donation. We also cover the cost of the treat bags we give to our Scout volunteers and the cost of all correspondence.

This year the gift bags will be given out on the 23rd of December and with projected shipping delays, time is of the essence.

Our projected total cost this year is $5,900. Thanks to donations we had left from last year and a very generous donation we received this year, we only need to raise $4,600 more.

We are registered with the state of Kansas as a non-profit, but we do not have a tax-exempt number. (The cost of getting one would be nearly as much as our annual budget.)

Three-day weather outlook

LAWRENCE — KU’s Wheat State Tour is back. Twenty-five University of Kansas faculty and staff will take a weekend journey across Kansas to explore the state’s history, economy, culture and geography.

“We’re so glad to be able to deepen our knowledge of Kansas and bring back one of the events that has been so positive for KU in the past,” said Giselle Anatol, interim director of the Hall Center for the Humanities.

This year’s tour takes place Nov. 10-11, with stops at Wilson, home to the state’s largest Czech population; the grassroots arts scene of Lucas; and historic Nicodemus, the last all-Black settlement west of the Mississippi River.

Nicodemus was a migration point for formerly enslaved people in the late 1800s.

The group’s visit there will be guided by historian Angela Bates, one of the descendants of the early settlers of Nicodemus. “Bates is retiring soon, so we are very fortunate to have her lead us,” said Anatol. “She’s a Kansas treasure.”

The first Wheat State Tours began two decades ago and were designed to take faculty and staff, many new to Kansas, throughout the state to gain a better understanding of where many of their students come from and to learn more about the state they serve. Over the years, participants have included faculty and staff from the Lawrence campus, KU Medical Center in Kansas City, and KU School of Medicine-Wichita.

During the tour, KU faculty and staff will engage in discussions with the people of Kansas to develop ideas about how the university can be of further assistance to the Wheat State. Along the way, participants get a chance to share their expertise with colleagues from other disciplines as well as with community members.

“I am so excited to be able to revitalize the program this year,” Anatol said. “I’m grateful to the donors who believe in the relevance of programs like this; there’s great potential for building bridges.”

Wheat State Tour returns with trip to historic Nicodemus, Wilson

The next steps toward developing more multi-unit housing in Hays were taken Thursday during the Hays City Commission meeting.&nbsp;

Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution of support for Michael D. Graham Rentals, LLC, Hays, who has requested the city apply for&nbsp;$650,000 in moderate income housing grant funding from the state for construction of a 48-unit apartment complex.&nbsp;Only cities or counties with populations less than 60,000 are eligible to apply for the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation grant program.

An award decision for the grant is expected by mid-January.&nbsp;

The application requirements also included a resolution regarding specific housing needs for rural housing incentive district financing.&nbsp;A 2021 analysis done by the Fort Hays State University Docking Institute of Public Affairs in 2021 found a shortage of quality housing in Hays.

Graham estimated the district would generate $1.2 million over the 25-year term, which would be made available to reimburse the developer for eligible costs. Those costs would be about $572,000.

The project would consist of 36 one-bedroom units and 12 two-bedroom units and be located on city-owned property at 10th and Walnut, site of the former railroad depot parking lot. Eventually, the property ownership would be transferred to Graham, who is currently building a similar project at Fourth and Fort in Hays.

"I'm excited thinking of the growth with the variety of housing we saw tonight, and potentially being able to move forward with the changes we've made [for developers]," said Alaina Cunningham, city commissioner. "I think that just helps us continue to move in the right direction."

Three amendments were agreed to the unified development code, two of which directly impact developers with new options. 

Now allowed is&nbsp;reduction of setbacks and minimum lot size in planned developments to allow for increased density and allowing cul-de-sacs up to 650 feet in length.&nbsp;

The third amendment to the unified development&nbsp;code reduces restrictive regulations for indoor storage units.

Self-storage units are still allowed in heavy-industrial zoned areas, and they will now also be permitted in light-industrial zones.

Self-storage units will also be allowed in general commercial areas with the following conditions:

• Interior accessed units only • Existing buildings only&nbsp; • No storage units located north of Interstate 70 or on properties with Vine Street frontage or with direct access from Vine Street

Commissioners had a <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/fcaae0d8-c61a-4893-ac2c-89700e6880f3">lengthy discussion at their Nov. 2 work session</a> about storage units on Vine. They expressed concerns there would be fewer buildings available for new businesses, which could generate more taxes for the city.&nbsp;

"Whenever cities make an investment in infrastructure — sewer, streets, water — it should be viewed as an investment. And there should be an expectation of return on investment. That's what helps keep taxes low," said Toby Dougherty, city manager.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"The return on investments is sales taxes, property taxes and jobs. And unfortunately, storage units provide the least of those."&nbsp;

Commercial development north of I-70 along Hall Street is also moving forward.

Commissioners approved recommendations from the planning commission to rezone 54 acres from agriculture to public and institutional district and light industrial for the Werth Development Group, LLC, Hays.&nbsp;

The final plat for WDG First Addition and annexation into the city of the two tracts of land at the west corner of 48th and Hall Streets as the site of a new National Guard Armory.&nbsp;

Dougherty told the commission of progress this week of the R-9 Ranch long-term water supply project in Edwards County.

"The administrative law judge convened the water transfer proceedings on Monday morning and formally ended the hearing, closing the process,"&nbsp;Dougherty said.

"So, the judge now has up to 90 days to issue his ruling on the proposed transfer. Once his ruling is determined, the hearing panel has up to 90 days to ratify or modify that ruling.&nbsp;

🎤 Forward Ever: Camber President Bobby Eklofe

At 4:16 a.m. Friday, the Ellis County Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 1354 Antonino Road.

 Upon arrival, heavy smoke and flames were found coming from a metal storage building.

Fire crews made an exterior attack due to the amount of building that was involved by fire.

Firefighters used three fire attack lines to extinguish the fire and keep the fire to the building of origin.

The building and other materials inside suffered extensive fire and smoke damage.

The fire was reported out at 5:52 a.m. and under control at 6:17 a.m. at which time fire crews were starting to be released from the scene. 

 Midwest Energy was contacted to shut off utilities to the building.

Fire crews remained on scene until 11:37 a.m. to assist the Office of the State Fire Marshal with the fire investigation.

Thirty firefighters from the Ellis County Fire Department (Hays, Ellis, Victoria, and Munjor) responded to assist.

Ellis County Fire DepartmentAt 4:16 a.m. Friday, the Ellis County Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 1354 Antonino Road. Upon arrival, heavy smoke and flames were found coming from a metal storage building.Fire crews made an exterior attack due to the amount of building that was involved by fire.Firefighters used three fire attack lines to extinguish the fire and keep the fire to the building of origin.The building and other materials inside suffered extensive fire and smoke damage.The fire was reported out at 5:52 a.m. and under control at 6:17 a.m. at which time fire crews were starting to be released from the scene. First-Generation College Celebration is an annual event raising awareness of first-generation college students and highlighting their achievements and experiences. Launched in 2017, the celebration recognizes the successes of the first-generation community. It is also a significant date, as November 8 marks the signing of the Higher Education Act&nbsp; of 1965, which established federal financial aid programs and made vital investments in colleges and universities, particularly benefiting limited-income, first-generation college students.

The term "first-generation" has been used in higher education for decades. Still, with shifting demographics, increasing enrollment of first-gen students, rising tuition costs, and a focus on graduation rates, the experiences of first-generation college students have become a renewed area of focus in postsecondary education.

As an institution dedicated to providing accessible, quality education, Fort Hays State University prioritizes welcoming and supporting first-generation college students. Our programs and services, such as the First to Finish Living Learning Community, aim to assist our students in their academic, career, and professional development.

The First to Finish Living Learning Community is designed to foster leadership growth among first-gen students by offering introductory leadership courses and a CORE (confidence, optimism, resilience, and engagement) leadership model. Our goal is to provide a pathway for students to navigate campus and community resources, explore engagement opportunities, and create career goals. Additionally, we prioritize assisting students in navigating campus services such as academic advising, career services, financial aid, and student employment opportunities, ensuring they feel supported throughout their college journey.

Our students also participate in various co-curricular experiences, including service projects and leadership opportunities. One of the signature co-curricular experiences is the Ad Astra First Generation Conference, where students travel to a Kansas university to engage in a two-day conference for first-generation college students.

To build a pipeline of support, we initiated a second-year community in 2019. This community aims to continue supporting students during their second or third year and includes a peer mentoring component. Students in this community are connected with the First to Finish community, allowing for networking and additional support.

Students in the First to Finish Living Learning Community are encouraged to complete the leadership certificate or minor to enhance their leadership skills and knowledge further. The second-year community, driven by the confidence and engagement gained in the first year, inspires the first-year living-learning community students, demonstrating what success can look like for first-generation college students. Becoming a first-generation college graduate can&nbsp;profoundly impact future generations, and we celebrate the achievements of our students who pave the way for others.

In celebration of the First-Generation College Celebration, I want to highlight the stories of some of our students.

Hailing from Holcomb, Kansas, Derek Mesa embarked on his journey at FHSU in the fall of 2020 amidst the challenges posed by pandemic protocols and limited student engagement. Recounting his initial visit to the campus during Tiger Day 2019, Derek was drawn to Fort Hays due to its exceptional experience. However, his expectations of finding friends exactly like him were exceeded as he and his fellow First to Finish Living Learning Community members realized the beauty of diversity in their newfound friendships.

Amid diverse backgrounds and interests, Derek was surrounded by friends from various majors, providing a unique opportunity to learn about their distinct experiences at Fort Hays. The programs at FHSU played a crucial role in Derek's success, equipping him with real-world career and professional experiences. Through his courses and club involvement, he absorbed invaluable knowledge that will shape his future career.

Currently a senior health and human performance major, Derek envisions continuing his education in graduate school and gaining classroom experience as a graduate teacher's assistant. Setting his sights even further, he aspires to work at a college or a facility akin to HaysMed's Center for Health Improvement after earning his master’s degree.

Derek fondly reflects on his lifelong appreciation for education, instilled by his parents since kindergarten. With unwavering support from his dad, mom, and brother, Derek emphasizes that his degree may bear his name, but its achievement would have been impossible without his family’s assistance. Their unwavering belief in his aspirations has enabled him to pursue opportunities they never had.

Melissa Nunez's journey from growing up in Topeka, Kansas, to attending FHSU is inspiring. Originally from California, she joined the First to Finish Living Learning Community in the fall of 2021. Melissa, a junior studying business management, dreams of owning her own business. However, her immediate goal after college is to oversee a company or business and establish her name as a business professional.

Reflecting on her time at FHSU, Melissa finds it challenging to pinpoint a favorite memory because she cherishes every aspect of being part of the program. The First to Finish Living Learning Community experience helped her step out of her comfort zone, allowing her to be authentic. It taught her there is always room for growth and learning. This newfound confidence has permeated all aspects of her life: school, work, and personal experiences.

Melissa's college journey holds great significance for her. She contemplated dropping out after a turbulent first semester of her freshman year. However, with her family's and professors' support, she realized she was simply in the wrong major. The decision to change majors proved life-changing; she knows it was the best choice she could have made. Melissa's determination and resilience have made her family exceptionally proud, especially considering the opportunities they never had.

Embracing every aspect of her college experience, pushing boundaries, and seizing opportunities, Melissa has transformed her journey into a tale of perseverance and growth. Her&nbsp;story inspires others who may find themselves at a crossroads, showing them that incredible success is within reach with the right support and self-belief.

Efren Tarango Fernandez, a technology studies (Construction Management) student, hails from Chihuahua, Mexico, specifically a ranch called El Chamizal. Last fall, he was a member of the First to Finish Living Learning Community, an experience that has profoundly impacted his college journey. The program provided Efren with a valuable opportunity to connect with other first-generation students, providing constant motivation in his academic pursuits. Moreover, he forged lifelong friendships with instructors, leaders, and fellow students, creating a supportive network beyond the classroom.

Efren draws inspiration from his sister, the first in their family to attend college, who continues to set a remarkable example for him and his brother. She consistently lends her assistance and support whenever he needs it most. Growing up, Efren's parents courageously uprooted their lives in Mexico and migrated to the United States to provide their children with opportunities they never had. They continue to make sacrifices, dedicating time and money to ensure their children's success and realize the American Dream. Efren's college journey fills his parents with pride and a deep sense of accomplishment. They relish witnessing their children flourish and courageously pursue their diverse career paths.

Membership in the First to Finish Living Learning Community program facilitated new friendships for Efren and propelled him out of his comfort zone through interactive class structures and dynamic classmates. His leadership role within the program enabled him to foster lasting connections that persist to this day. Whether conversing on the way to class, socializing around campus, or engaging with each other in public, these friends have become an integral part of Efren's college experience. The profound impact of the First to Finish Living Learning Community has instilled in him a desire to become even more involved in student organizations, such as Tiger Team, the Associated General Contractors, Alpha Kappa Psi, and Catholic Tiger.

Efren's college journey exemplifies the transformative power of perseverance and a strong support system. From the First to Finish Living Learning Community program to his unwavering family support, he has found the motivation to thrive academically and navigate the challenges of pursuing his dreams. Through his story, Efren shows us the profound impact of our connections, the importance of family, and the unlimited potential within each of us.

Recounting his initial visit to the campus during Tiger Day 2019, Derek was drawn to Fort Hays due to its exceptional experience. However, his expectations of finding friends exactly like him were exceeded as he and his fellow First to Finish Living Learning Community members realized the beauty of diversity in their newfound friendships.Amid diverse backgrounds and interests, Derek was surrounded by friends from various majors, providing a unique opportunity to learn about their distinct experiences at Fort Hays. The programs at FHSU played a crucial role in Derek's success, equipping him with real-world career and professional experiences. Through his courses and club involvement, he absorbed invaluable knowledge that will shape his future career.Currently a senior health and human performance major, Derek envisions continuing his education in graduate school and gaining classroom experience as a graduate teacher's assistant. Setting his sights even further, he aspires to work at a college or a facility akin to HaysMed's Center for Health Improvement after earning his master’s degree.Derek fondly reflects on his lifelong appreciation for education, instilled by his parents since kindergarten. Originally from California, she joined the First to Finish Living Learning Community in the fall of 2021. Melissa, a junior studying business management, dreams of owning her own business. However, her immediate goal after college is to oversee a company or business and establish her name as a business professional.Reflecting on her time at FHSU, Melissa finds it challenging to pinpoint a favorite memory because she cherishes every aspect of being part of the program. The First to Finish Living Learning Community experience helped her step out of her comfort zone, allowing her to be authentic. It taught her there is always room for growth and learning. This newfound confidence has permeated all aspects of her life: school, work, and personal experiences.Melissa's college journey holds great significance for her. She contemplated dropping out after a turbulent first semester of her freshman year. However, with her family's and professors' support, she realized she was simply in the wrong major. The decision to change majors proved life-changing; she knows it was the best choice she could have made. Melissa's determination and resilience have made her family exceptionally proud, especially considering the opportunities they never had.Embracing every aspect of her college experience, pushing boundaries, and seizing opportunities, Melissa has transformed her journey into a tale of perseverance and growth. Last fall, he was a member of the First to Finish Living Learning Community, an experience that has profoundly impacted his college journey. The program provided Efren with a valuable opportunity to connect with other first-generation students, providing constant motivation in his academic pursuits. Moreover, he forged lifelong friendships with instructors, leaders, and fellow students, creating a supportive network beyond the classroom.Efren draws inspiration from his sister, the first in their family to attend college, who continues to set a remarkable example for him and his brother. She consistently lends her assistance and support whenever he needs it most. Growing up, Efren's parents courageously uprooted their lives in Mexico and migrated to the United States to provide their children with opportunities they never had. They continue to make sacrifices, dedicating time and money to ensure their children's success and realize the American Dream. Efren's college journey fills his parents with pride and a deep sense of accomplishment. They relish witnessing their children flourish and courageously pursue their diverse career paths.Membership in the First to Finish Living Learning Community program facilitated new friendships for Efren and propelled him out of his comfort zone through interactive class structures and dynamic classmates. ROOKS COUNTY—One person died in a fire Thursday in Rooks County.

Early Thursday, fire crews were called to a house fire in Stockton, according to a social media report from the Rooks County Sheriff's Office.

&nbsp;Search and Rescue located one fatality inside the home. 

The exact cause of the fire is undetermined. The fire is believed to have originated inside the house and no foul play is suspected.&nbsp;

Kansas State Fire Marshall’s Office has been called to assist Stockton Fire and the Rooks County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation.

The sheriff's office has not released the name of the victim.

Chill out in style as Cold Stone Creamery scoops up fresh delights in the heart of downtown Hays.&nbsp;

The chain restaurant, 507 Main St., is in the former Hays Daily News location, which is also the home of TreeTop Security and STEM Harvest, a science, engineering, technology and math learning center.

Dallas Haselhorst, TreeTop Security and STEM Harvest Founder, initially needed 6,000 square feet to house his two operations but purchased the 18,000 square foot building instead.&nbsp;

“My wife and I were sitting there going, 'Jeez, this building's way bigger than what we needed,'” Haselhorst said. “It came down to what else do you want to do, and I think both of us simultaneously said, 'Cold Stone.'”

The first conversations about Cold Stone were had between the two before the purchase of the building was even finalized, going as far back as 2019.&nbsp;

“Our family loves ice cream. When we go out of town, we seek out Cold Stone, and it just felt like the perfect fit for our location,” Haslehorst said.

Haselhorst said he thinks Cold Stone Creamery will draw attention to the downtown area and inspire visitors to return for future events.

“I think not just downtown but really all of Hays will benefit from it because people are going to get pulled off from interstate,” he said. “It’s a destination place for people coming into Hays and going, 'Wow this place is really neat. We should come back sometime.'”

Cold Stone officially opened on Halloween, giving 450 ice cream cones to young trick-or-treaters.

The establishment offers indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a convenient walk-up window designed for large sports teams seeking treats. The building has electric vehicle chargers on its south side.

“The idea was people plug their electric vehicle, grab an ice cream cone and walk around downtown to see the sights,” Haselhorst said.

Haselhorst said the Cold Stone experience in Hays stands out from what you would encounter at other Cold Stone locations across the state.

“A lot of people haven't been to a singing Cold Stone because a lot of the ones in Kansas and Nebraska don’t do it,” he said. “We'll be one of the few at least in Kansas for several hours in either direction.”

Ice cream flavors featured on the menu include Cheesecake Fantasy, Banana Caramel Crunch, Cookie Mintster, Surrender to Strawberry and Germanchokolatekake.

“There are about 12 required flavors that we have to carry, and then there’s about another 60 flavors that we can carry. That doesn’t include your seasonal items,” Haselhorst said.&nbsp;

In the near future, Cold Stone plans to introduce new and exclusive flavors, aiming to incorporate customer suggestions as well.

Haselhorst envisions numerous chances for Cold Stone to partner and engage with the Hays community.

“We're week one in trying to get our feet under us, but, at the same time, we’re looking toward the future already too,” he said.

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland announced 13 manufacturers, including two in Hays and one in Norton, have been accepted into the department’s Made in Kansas program. Made in Kansas is sponsored by the Kansas Department of Commerce to help promote Kansas manufacturers to customers across Kansas and around the globe.

The Made in Kansas program is designed to showcase Kansas-made products and provide those companies with a verified stamp of assurance for use in promotional activities. Participation is free. 

To join the Made in Kansas program, a business must utilize manufacturing in the production process&nbsp;and&nbsp;meet one additional criterion:

• More than half the components come from Kansas&nbsp; • Final assembly takes place in Kansas • Kansas-headquartered company includes design and/or engineering functions &nbsp;

“Some of the finest products in the world are made right here in Kansas, but the world might not know that yet,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “This initiative highlights first-class manufacturers that contribute significantly to their local communities as well as the overall state economy.”

Commerce established the program to create a tangible means for companies to communicate that their products are made in Kansas. Certified program partner manufacturers have access to the exclusive Made in Kansas seal to feature on packaging, products and promotional materials.

“Having a Made in Kansas logo on products lets customers know they are purchasing excellence, reliability and consistency,”&nbsp;Program Manager Corrie Ann Campbell said. “Our manufacturers embody the Kansas work ethic, which is honed by more than 160 years of pioneering spirit and commitment to workmanship.”

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Chevy Express driven by Ryan A. Kuhn, 27, Colby, was eastbound on U.S. 24 three miles east of Kansas 25.

The van rear-ended a 2008 Ford Ranger driven by Talon R. Wark, 15, Colby, who was turning into a private drive. After impact the pickup rolled into a ditch.

EMS transported both drivers to Citizens Medical Center. Kuhn was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Kansas Department of Commerce announced 15 Kansas communities would receive their share of $2 million from the Community Development Block Grant-COVID Resiliency (CDBG-CVR) competitive grant program. This program was funded via the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

CDBG-CVR was designed to empower Kansas businesses to enhance their resiliency in the face of future community illnesses and public health emergencies.

“These grants will be a game-changer for many Kansas businesses,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “This investment in pandemic resiliency not only will help retain jobs but help our state attract new businesses, further boosting our emerging economy.”

The grants support a wide range of projects, including technology and infrastructure upgrades, professional development, and other initiatives aimed at preventing future closures due to public health crises. The awardee communities will distribute their funds to local businesses previously identified in their proposals.

The CDBG-CVR competitive grant program focused on the following key areas:

• Upgrades to ensure business continuity&nbsp; • Technology, hardware and software upgrades • E-commerce updates &nbsp; • Professional development and training&nbsp;

The 15 awardees represent a diverse range of businesses across Kansas, each with projects that align with the program’s objectives.

Fourteen communities each will receive $141,642 for distribution. They include the cities of Baldwin City, Holton, Horton, McPherson, Smith Center and WaKeeney, as well as Cloud, Graham, Lincoln, Mitchell, Rawlins, Rooks, Smith and Sumner counties. The city of Columbus was awarded $17,000.

The grants will help businesses survive challenging times and position them for long-term success.

This is the fourth and final round of the Kansas program, which has had a profound impact, providing essential assistance to 1,356 small businesses across the state. Since 2020, the program has disbursed more than $16.1 million in grant funds, demonstrating Commerce’s commitment to supporting the resilience of local enterprises. These investments were key to small business survival during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

NCK Tech was recently named to the nation’s top 150 community colleges by the Aspen Institute of College Excellence. 

As one of the top 150 institutions, NCK Tech is eligible to compete for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the nation's signature recognition of high achievement and performance among two-year colleges. This is the fifth consecutive year the college was named to the top 150 after being selected from a pool of over 1,000 public two-year colleges from 31 states.

President of the college, Eric Burks, explained how NCK Tech is consistently rising to the top.

"Approximately four years ago, employees at NCK Tech collaborated to create a core values statement: 'Achieving excellence with integrity through dedication, innovation, collaboration, and communication.' The national recognition we have received serves as evidence that our faculty and staff embody these values daily. I deeply appreciate their dedication and the high standards they uphold, both for themselves and for our students," Burks said.

The Aspen Prize spotlights exemplary community colleges in order to drive attention to colleges achieving post-graduate success for all students and is a central way Aspen researches highly effective student success strategies that are shared with the field. 

The 150 eligible colleges have been invited to submit student success data and narratives about strategies to achieve better and more equitable student outcomes as the next step in an intensive review process that culminates in the naming of the Aspen Prize winner in spring 2025. The eligible colleges represent the diversity and depth of the community college sector. Located in urban, rural, and suburban areas across 31 states, these colleges serve as few as 169 students and as many as 49,619.

“The Aspen Prize is rooted first and foremost in an assessment of whether colleges are walking the walk,” said Josh Wyner, executive director of the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. “As community colleges face enrollment variations, enroll students with pandemic-related learning loss, and graduate students into a rapidly changing labor market, it is easy to lose track of what matters most. The best community colleges are continuing to focus on advancing the core mission: making sure as many students as possible graduate with&nbsp;credentials that lead to fulfilling careers and reflect the development of diverse talent that communities, states, and our nation need.”

Community colleges are an essential contributor to our nation’s success, student outcomes can vary substantially among institutions.
