Members of Trinity Lutheran Church presented a check to the Hays USD 489 school district on Monday for $6,000 to be used to buy supplies for local school food pantries.

Each school in the district has a food pantry to help its needy students.

The church raised the funds through a benefit barbecue in August.

Eagle Radio presents donation to Hays High for video streaming

Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas hosted its annual awards luncheon in Hays on October 17.&nbsp;Awards were given throughout the afternoon to staff, persons served, and community members.

The first awards of the afternoon were given to employees of DSNWK for their years of service. Those staff recognized and listed by location, were:

Hays - Eric Barrett, Matthew Basgall, Roseanne Benabdallah, LaVonne Giess, Kyle Kreutzer, Ruth Lang, Jacqueline Lattin, Dawn Marlett, Jan Nosekabel, Dustin Olsen, Norma Tripler, David Whalen, Rod Windholz

Hill City - Marla Baker, Gertrude Deges, Gina Nichol

Norton - Teresa Garcia, Troy Haney, Rene Readle, Kimberly Richard, Laquita Smith, William Underwood

Russell - Joseph Cole, Mellissa Holloway, Breanna White, Angelina Younger

Recognition was made to seven people who retired from DSNWK over the past year. They were Marsha Eastep of Atwood, Jeannie Komarek, Patty Littrel, Ron Staab and Valarie Strobel of Hays, and Sherri Jackson and Kelly Miller of Hill City.

Special recognition was also paid to three staff members for their outstanding work with persons with disabilities. Jessica House and Kirsten Pfleiger of Hays and Keith Huntington of Atwood were each presented with the Employee of the Year Award.

Two $100 scholarship awards were presented to Destiny Bergstesser and Lisa Raudis who are attending Fort Hays State University. This award was given from the Jerelyn Becker Memorial Scholarship Fund for employees studying in higher education in a field related to serving people with developmental disabilities.

Several awards were given to individuals served by DSNWK for achievement through employment. Those receiving awards and listed by location were:

DSNWK presented two Individual Achievement Awards to individuals served by DSNWK. Caitlyn Merritt of Russell and Ian Collins of Norton were presented these awards which go each year to one youth and one adult who have shown tremendous individual progress throughout the year. 

Recognition was also made to Patrick Hagen, individual served by DSNWK in Norton with one of DSNWK’s Good Neighbor Awards. Hagen was recognized for his volunteer efforts in the community.

Awards were presented to members of area communities during the afternoon. 

Bright Minds Academy in Hays received DSNWK's Employer of the Year Award for their outstanding support of people with disabilities in the workforce. The Community Support Award was presented to Grace Kastens of Atwood for her support to individuals served by DSNWK through her Next Chapter Book Club. Recognition was made to volunteer Margaret Thompson of Norton with DSNWK’s Good Neighbor Award. Thompson volunteers her time taking an individual served by DSNWK to church each week.

Finally, DSNWK recognized two long-time advocates of DSNWK for their support with its Vision of Hope Awards. Bart Betzen of Chicago, Illinois and the late Bill and Harriet Richardon, formerly of Hoxie, were honored. DSNWK paid tribute to them for their outstanding support over the years for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

DSNWK is a 501c3 nonprofit serving 18 counties in northwest Kansas with a mission to advocate for persons with disabilities and those who care about them by planning and supporting a life of dignity, interdependence, and personal satisfaction in the community.

DSNWK celebrates successes at awards luncheon

WASHINGTON — With the nation’s tax season rapidly approaching, the Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers there are important steps they can take now to help “get ready” to file their 2023 federal tax return.

This is the first in a series of special IRS “Get Ready” reminders to help taxpayers prepare for the upcoming tax filing season in early 2024. A little advance work now can help people have the paperwork and information ready to file their tax returns quickly and accurately. But to make adjustments in time to affect 2023 tax withholding, taxpayers need to act quickly. Only a few pay periods remain in the year, and payroll systems need time to make withholding changes.

Speed refunds with direct deposit Direct deposit is the fastest and safest way to get a tax refund. Taxpayers can make direct deposits to bank accounts, banking apps and reloadable debit cards, but will need to provide the routing and account information associated with the account. If the routing and account number cannot be located, taxpayers should contact their bank, financial institution or app provider.

Taxpayers requesting a paper check are much more likely to report an issue getting their refund because of non-receipt, forgery, theft or checks returned for a bad address, compared to taxpayers using direct deposit.

The Hays school board discussed selling the empty lot north of Hays Middle School at its meeting Monday night.

The district is mowing the six acres but has no plans for the property. The current Hays Middle School will be renovated into an elementary school as part of the ongoing bond improvements. The six acres in question will not be used as part of the bond project.

Superintendent Ron Wilson said funds from the property sale would go into the capital improvement fund if the board chose to sell the property.

He said the property might be of interest to developers who want to build housing in Hays. Because the property is in an existing residential neighborhood, infrastructure, such as streets, sewer and water already exist.

The board made no decision on the sale of the property on Monday but voted to obtain an appraisal.

Board attorney Bill Jeter suggested if the board did decide to sell the property that they used a sealed bid for the sale. Jeter said the district could specify it has the right to reject any and all bids.

The district could also hire a realtor or set the property for sale at a public auction.

Jeter said past sales of property through sealed bids for the school district and the county, for whom he is also the attorney, have resulted in positive outcomes.

The district would not have to pay real estate agent fees or auction fees if they chose to use sealed bids. He said he could take care of the contracts under his standing retainer with the school district.

The board will consider the sale further after they receive the appraisal.

The board also had a hearing on a policy that would allow the enrollment of students who live in other districts at Hays USD 489. The policy brings the district in line with a new state law. It will take effect next school year.

Hays USD 489 board considers sale of land near middle school

TOPEKA -&nbsp;The Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) Foundation, an international organization for student affairs professionals, has recognized Dr. Teresa L. Clounch as a 2024 “Pillars of the Profession.” This is one of the foundation’s highest honors and recognizes Clounch’s outstanding contributions to student affairs, higher education and NASPA over her career thus far.

“Dr. TLC is someone I and our students can always count on for calm wisdom,” said Dr. JuliAnn Mazachek, president of Washburn University. “She’s a passionate advocate for an inclusive, equitable and fun campus. I am thrilled to see her honored for all her work.”

Clounch joined Washburn University in July 2023 as the associate vice president for student life and dean of students. Prior to joining Washburn University, she was the assistant vice president of student affairs, Title IX officer and senior diversity officer for Fort Hays State University.

Clounch was nominated for this honor by Dr. Eric Grospitch, vice president for student life, Washburn University.

Grospitch stated “Dr. Clounch is a wonderful educator, mentor and friend to all who know her. If you can’t find her in her office, chances are you will find her attending one of the many student-centered activities or programs on campus. Dr. Clounch goes above and beyond to make all students feel welcome and at home on campus and I am quite sure every single student who lives on campus or chooses to be involved knows her.

TOPEKA — U.S. Department of Agriculture Kansas State Director for Rural Development Christy Davis announced that Rural Development is investing more than $6.6 million in loans and grants to spur economic development through rural cooperatives in Kansas, including in Colby.

“Cooperatives serve as one of our most important partners in delivering critical goods and services to rural Kansas,” Davis&nbsp;said. “For more than a century, the cooperative business model has been an integral part of the rural American economy.”

The Rural Grocery Initiative will work with partners across Kansas to enhance and deliver cooperative development services. The primary objective of the Center will be to improve the economic condition of rural areas through cooperative development. It is anticipated that 74 businesses will be assisted, and 10 jobs created as result of the project and four jobs saved.</li><li>A&nbsp;$2,000,000 loan&nbsp;will provide loan funds to Secure Semiconductor Manufacturing, LLC for furnishings, equipment, supplies, working capital and other costs related to their new semiconductor manufacturing plant being constructed north of&nbsp;Burlington. The project is estimated to create 30 jobs and will be part of a high-tech cluster bringing 1,200 jobs to Kansas.</li><li>A&nbsp;$446,800 loan&nbsp;will help remodel and rehabilitate the Arbor House Event Locale &amp; Stable, LLC event center in&nbsp;Bennington.&nbsp; The project is estimated to create six jobs.</li><li>A&nbsp;$2,000,000 loan&nbsp;will provide loans to rural utilities program borrowers to spur economic development. This project will provide loan funds for WWS, Inc. to construct an 81-room hotel in&nbsp;Colby. In early childhood, we teach routines to help children feel safe. When children know what is happening next in their world, they are less likely to feel anxious or worried. 

Brush, Book, Bed is a routine and structure you can create for children to help them prepare for bed. 

Brush, Book, Bed is a program by the American Academy of Pediatrics to educate families with children to combine oral health and bedtime routines. This program has been implemented by safety net clinics, Parents as Teachers, and Healthy families in Kansas.

Brush: Each night assist your child in brushing their teeth. If teeth haven’t come in use a soft washcloth to wipe your baby’s gums before bed. This helps them get used to the sensory experience of having something put into their mouth, which will hopefully make brushing teeth easier when those pearly whites pop through. Be gentle, make it a game, smile and help your baby feel comfortable. It’s okay to let your child practice brushing, but they need your help to do the best job. Until they can write in cursive or tie their own shoes, they do not have the fine motor skills to be able to properly brush their teeth on their own.

Book: After you have helped them brush their teeth, it is time to read. Let your child pick a book. Let them be in charge, follow their lead. You don’t have to read word for word for them to have fun. Ask them questions about the pictures. Even as kids get older and can read on their own, this may be a good time to connect with your child at the end of the day. Many parents have fond memories of reading a chapter or two of longer novels with their children in the evening.

Bed: After brushing teeth and reading together, it’s time to go to bed. Make daytime playtime! Play and exercise during the day will help your children sleep at night. To prevent tooth decay, avoid putting babies in bed with a bottle of milk or juice. Breastfeeding at night is okay, since breastmilk alone does not cause cavities, according to Kansas Cavity Free Kids.

Try to start this routine at about the same time every night, about 30 minutes before bedtime, so that you have enough time to brush teeth, read together, and go to sleep. Ellis County Sheriff activity log, Nov. 5-11, 2023

Grow Hays, Inc. hosted the Ellis County YEC, Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, on November 7, at BriefSpace in downtown Hays.&nbsp;Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge is a competition to teach high school students about entrepreneurship.

&nbsp;The local competition consisted of 26 students submitting a written executive summary (written business plan), a tradeshow booth, and a four-minute presentation. There were 18 projects presented, with 17 of those from Thomas More Prep Marian and one from Ellis High School.&nbsp; Prize money of $2,700 was awarded to 12 students.

Taking home first place and $1000, were Ellis High School students Brody Fischer and Kamden Keller with Keller Lawn Mowing.

&nbsp;TMP students took home the remaining prizes.

Second place and $500 were awarded to Caden Becker with Star Garage Aid.

We were happy to discover third place was a tie! Prize money of $300 was awarded to Austin Gilbert and Caleb Marintzer with ACMG and also and Ainsleigh Bain and Haley Stecklein with The Coffee Spot.

Local businesses showed their support and awarded the following $200 prizes:

• Midwest Energy’s Best Trade Show – Anabelle Leach and Carlie Fischer with The Book Bean

•  Sunflower Electric’s People’s Choice – Alejandra Robles and Kendall Walker with Wreck Room

• Nex-Generations’ Ready To Launch – Jaren Anschutz with High Tide Pressure Wash

Judges for the event were Network Kansas’ Sarah Larosh, Grabbe Law Office’s Julie Grabbe, Bank of Hays’ Brandon Prough, and Tree Top Security's Dallas Haselhorst.

James Robben,&nbsp;director of business development at Grow Hays,&nbsp;had this to say of the&nbsp;event, “I am very pleased with the outcome of the competition.&nbsp; All the students did a fantastic job at the event. They were ready and presented their business ideas very professionally.&nbsp; I hope to grow YEC next year and I'm excited to see how our winners do at state.”

The annual series culminates in the statewide championship Kansas Entrepreneur Challenge held at Kansas State University. The 2024 spring event will host the top students from each local competition. They will face off against each other for prize money and other honors. 

The local winner, Keller Lawn Mowing, automatically qualifies for the statewide event. The Kansas Entrepreneur Challenge will accept wild card entries in early spring.

The Ellis County event is part of the 2023-2024 Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge&nbsp; Series thanks to support from NetWork Kansas and the E-Community Partnership, the Kansas State University Center for the Advancement of Entrepreneurship and is to promote entrepreneurship and small business development in Kansas. The local competition is also made possible via The Robert E. Schmidt Foundation. The competition is for student-created, managed, and owned ventures.

🎙 Grow Hays announces Ellis County Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge winners

The Women Who Lead, formerly known as the Wonder Women League celebrated the lighting of the <a href="https://www.haysusa.com/Facilities/Facility/Details/Dog-Park-16">Hays Dog Park</a> Wednesday night.

Lighting for the dog park has been the No. 1 request to the City of Hays Parks Department.

Residents say if the park had lights, they could take their dogs out to the park early in the morning before going to work and later in the evening after work. There have also been reports of coyotes in the park after dark, and lighting would help alleviate the problem and provide greater safety.

"Women Who Lead has focused on projects to improve the quality of life for residents in Ellis County. Projects have generally focused on children and families and the elderly, but this is the first time we've benefited dogs," Ruth Ruder, Women Who Lead, vice chairwoman, said.

Women Who Lead formed a committee, led by chairwoman Joslyn Brungardt, and were able to join with community partners to make the lighting project happen.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for the city of Hays to get to light the dog park, and we are just ecstatic that we could get to help out. Women Who Lead is a great group," she said.

The cost of the project was $12,600, but $5,6o0 of that came from in-kind donations from contractors. Businesses, individuals and Women Who Lead donated another $6,300 toward the project.

Major sponsors of the project included&nbsp;Midwest Energy, M&amp;D of Hays, Ralph’s Electric and City of Hays Parks Department.

"I think you will agree that the dog park is a wonderful addition to our city," Ruder said, "and we are so fortunate to have a place where dog owners can bring their pets for exercise."

During the lighting ceremony on Wednesday, Women Who Lead made a $1,500 donation to <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/103442173090740">Friends of the Dog Park</a>. The group recently built single-use dog areas for dogs who may have behavior issues that require. them to separate from other dogs. The group hopes to use the Women Who Lead donation to purchase agility equipment for the park, which it hopes to have in place by spring.

"This park started 10 years ago as a glimmer, and it's been a true community effort," Kim Perez, Friends of the Hays Dog Park board member, said. "All of our donors, all of our volunteers, we want to thank you for that."

Woman Who Lead also spearheaded a food, treat and toy drive for the <a href="https://hshponline.org/">Humane Society of the High Plains</a>. They were able to fill a truck with several thousand dollars worth of donations. Bags of dog and cat food were also presented to the <a href="https://hayscac.com/">Community Assistance Center</a>. This bulk food will be broken into smaller bags for families in need who have pets.

Individuals made monetary donations to these two organizations as part of the drive, and those donations were presented to the two organizations Wednesday night.

Hillside Veterinary Clinic, Hays Veterinary Hospital and Barkley Suites also donated to the event.

Women Who Lead celebrate lighting of Hays Dog Park

The Chamber in Hays is proud to announce the appointment of Isaiah Schindler as their new executive assistant, effective Nov. 8.

With deep local roots and a strong commitment to advancing the interests of Chamber members and stakeholders, Schindler's addition to the team marks a new chapter in the organization's ongoing mission to support small businesses and enhance the economic vitality of the community.

Schindler, a native of Hays, brings a wealth of experience and a passion for community development to his new role.

He said he is eager to forge new relationships within the community and beyond, leveraging his unique perspective on the importance of small businesses in driving economic success.

"I am beyond elated to announce that I have joined The Chamber in Hays staff in the executive assistant role,” Schindler said. “Being originally from Hays, I understand the necessity of small business in improving the economic vitality of the community. Without it and the steadfast efforts of the Chamber, the community would not be as successful as it is today."

🎙 Hays native is new executive assistant at the Chamber in Hays

&nbsp;The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a leading suicide research and prevention organization in the U.S., invites those who have lost a loved one to suicide to participate in a day of healing at an International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day (Survivor Day) event held on or near the day’s observance on Saturday, November 18.

Our Hays area event will be a part of the nearly 300 events taking place worldwide this year. It will be held at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall at 2350 E. 8th, on November 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Survivor Day is held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving each year, as the holidays can be especially difficult for those who have lost loved ones to suicide. On this date, survivors of suicide loss are encouraged to come together to find comfort as they share stories of healing and hope. The observance is marked with events where attendees can join their local communities to find understanding and connection through their shared experiences.

“Survivor Day is a great event that brings those together that are grieving, dealing, healing and understanding .We all share a common bond that connects us. The holidays are coming up and suicide rates tend you go up around this time of year; it is especially important that we are getting together and learning coping, healing and prevention skills. The biggest thing we want everyone to know is that they are not alone.”

Local Survivor Day events offer attendees the opportunity to learn coping strategies, explore grief and discover resources to help with each unique healing journey. 

The Hays events will also hold a screening of a new AFSP-produced documentary showcasing relatable stories of loss, hope and healing, and include a speaker and lunch. It is a safe and comfortable environment with others who are trying to heal and who want to connect with those that have gone through the same thing. It helps us all to work toward healing, accepting, understanding and prevention for our future generations.

Survivors of Suicide Loss Day to be observed with Hays event Nov. 18

The holiday season is around the corner, and this means that the kitchen will likely become a busy place as we prepare meals to gather around. As you prepare tasty dishes to share, be conscious of the possibility of sharing illness too. 

I found these tips from K-State food scientist, Karen Blakeslee, especially helpful for preventing cross-contamination:&nbsp;

“We use the kitchen sink for food preparation and more,” Blakeslee said. “The possibility exists for foodborne illness-causing bacteria to hang out in the sink too. These bacteria could cross-contaminate your food and make you sick.”&nbsp;

Blakeslee added that a recent USDA study tested surfaces where participants prepared a breakfast meal with raw sausage, shell eggs, and a fruit salad made with cut-up cantaloupe. Test results showed that 34% of the sinks were contaminated after preparing the meal.&nbsp;

Even more scary, 26% of the samples of cut-up cantaloupe from the fruit salad were contaminated after breakfast prep.&nbsp;

“The bacteria in the sink or on your hands can cross-contaminate from the sink to other items, including those you normally eat raw. This means you’ll be eating that bacteria too,” Blakeslee said.&nbsp;
