On April 3 through 5, 2024, over 1,600 high school and middle school students from across the state of Kansas converged at the Stormont Vail Events Center and the Hotel Topeka at City Center to compete in the state’s largest business student competition—The Kansas Future Business Leaders of America State Leadership Conference. FBLA members from 99 different chapters vied for a chance to compete at this summer’s Future Business Leaders of American National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida on June 29 through July 2, 2024.

With 78 business and technology events, the top four winners in every event have the opportunity to move on to compete against some of the best business students in the nation and around the world. Whether it be competing in objective tests, interviews, public speaking events, presentations or problem-solving scenarios, the Kansas FBLA State Leadership Conference brings excitement and energy to the participants and their advisers. Many students have been spending months preparing for their particular events.

Over 120 career professionals from around the state judged and evaluated the competitors to not only decide who qualified to represent Kansas at nationals, but to also help better the students who were competing in events. Also, of the 78 events that students participated in, at least 70 of them were sponsored by small town businesses, corporations, and individuals. These sponsorships will help to provide some of the firstplace event winners with finances to cover a portion of their registration costs to compete at the 2024 National Leadership Conference.

From the excitement of the Opening Session kick off where members presented their campaign speeches and skits, to the climax of the announcing of the event winners, FBLA members had two days of jam-packed activities. Also included in the festivities were campaign booths (and campaigning), college booths, a March of Dimes presentation that pertained to Prematurity Awareness, candidate caucusing, and an energized dance for all attendees.

TMP-M FBLA had 20 members compete at this year’s state conference. Each member represented Thomas More Prep-Marian High School with Pride and Dignity that exemplified TMP-M’s commitment to academic and spiritual development. Below are the names of FBLA members who placed at the 2024 FBLA State Leadership Conference.

Hyeongseo Emmett Choi was the State Champion in both Computer Problem Solving and in Cybersecurity

With this year’s national FBLA theme being “TOGETHER WE ACHIEVE”, there was no better representation of this theme than through the efforts of all the FBLA advisers across the State of Kansas. TMP-Marian members compete at 2024 business conference

Did you know that optimistic people tend to live longer? In fact,
positivity adds up to 7.5 years to life! Higher levels of optimism are
associated with reduced risk of certain diseases such as heart disease, cancer,
and stroke. This research suggests that embracing positivity may be a way to
increase longevity and improve overall well-being.

Dr. Erin Martinez, Kansas State University Aging Specialist, tells
us to “SMILE BIG.” The acronym can help us remember to be an optimist and reap
the good of life:

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Successful aging requires practicing positivity.&nbsp;“If we
have a positive attitude, we are more likely to make changes and implement
healthy behaviors into our lives that are going to help us be successful as we
age.”

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Manage our expectations. “We are not
always going to be at the pinnacle of healthy aging, and that’s okay. We need
to make our expectations something attainable.”

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Interact with positivity.&nbsp;“Research
shows that when you interact with positive people and places, you’re more
likely to embrace positivity as well.”

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Looking for positives.&nbsp;“We know that bad things
happen sometimes, but when you take the time to truly reflect, I bet you’ll

Escaping ageism.&nbsp;“Make it a priority to escape
stereotypes associated with aging. Your age does not define who you are.”

Being healthy.&nbsp;“We know that there are a lot
of healthy behaviors that we should be doing, but we don’t always do them.
Eating healthfully, exercising regularly, taking care of our brain…all of those
things lead to successful aging.”

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
‘I Can’ approach.&nbsp;“Instead of saying, ‘I can’t
do this or that anymore,’ take the ‘I Can’ approach. For example, ‘I can
utilize a cane that will help me move around more safely…’”

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Give yourself grace.&nbsp;“Sometimes we’re going to
mess up or have a bad day. We need to give ourselves grace so we’re not beating
ourselves down when we don’t always embrace positivity. It is okay to not be
okay.”

The “SMILE BIG” approach can be
encouraging because it is a choice. Some factors in life are uncontrollable,
but choosing optimism is something each of us has the power to do no matter our
age. However, seasons of life may present circumstances that make optimism the
difficult choice. So, I challenge you to smile big and spread positivity to all
who cross your path.

Three-day weather outlook

The overall Hays Post/Eagle Radio March Mania contest winner was Troy Ecker, with a score of 296. Ecker won $250 cash and $100 in Chamber Cheques.

The 16-team bracket winner was Chris Rorabaugh, with a score of 208.

The 4-team bracket winner was Courtney Augustine, with a score of 128.

Hays Post March Mania winners announced

A Hays school board member raised questions about spending on the district's $143 million bond projects at Monday's meeting.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/129101d8-dc2b-43bf-a698-58ccdabed924">The bond was approved in May 2022</a>, and construction is underway on a new Hays High School. The existing high school will be renovated into a middle school, and the middle school will be renovated into an elementary school.

The bond plans also include renovations at Roosevelt and O'Loughlin elementary schools. The district plans to close Wilson and Lincoln as elementary schools, sell the Rockwell and Lincoln buildings, the oldest buildings in the district, and move the administrative offices into the Wilson building.

Board member Derek Yarmer, who took a seat on the board in January, questioned the budget for the projects, saying he did not think the district would be able to deliver on its promises.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/6942435f-2284-422c-9ed9-5bf7d68c4984">The contract for Hays High School came in at almost $105 million, which was above original estimates when the bond was approved. The Roosevelt renovations, which are also underway, are under contract for $19.8 million.</a>

Superintendent Ron Wilson insisted the bond projects were on budget.

He said the design plans for O'Loughlin are completed and will be coming before the board soon for approval.

"What we wanted to make sure was that we were giving the space needed," Wilson said. "That was what the desire of passing the bond was. ... I think that is what we are going to be able to do and feel really good about doing that."

Yarmer said the original estimate for the new high school was $77 million.

"The numbers don't seem to jive. It looks like we're going to be behind," he said.

Wilson said the estimate for the high school was calculated in 2021 before record inflation.

Ken Brooks, board president, said, "I think the district has made cuts that were necessary but not dramatic and not taking away from any of the original purpose. What we are paying to build a building now is probably about 40 percent [more than] in 2021 or even 2022."

Yarmer said, "It doesn't change the fact that you run out of money. What do you do when you run out of money? I don't see how you finish the other schools to what we are supposed to have."

Wilson said, "I'm very proud of what we have been able to do, and I think we're going to be able to do what we need to do, providing the necessary space."

Yarmer said he thought the bond promised to finish, furnish and equip the schools with the $143 million.

"Now you need to follow through on it, and I don't think you're doing a very good job of it," Yarmer said.

Yarmer said items that should be taken care of through bond funds are now in the capital outlay budget.

Brooks said some of the items he mentioned, including HVAC projects, were in the capital outlay budget all along.

Board member Jayme Goetz said some inflation could be expected on any construction project, but the district could not account for the massive inflation it has encountered recently.

Board member Ruth Ruder said the district has been able to reap higher interest rates on the bond funds than it anticipated when the bond was passed.

Wilson said the district can't go over budget on the bond and is not legally allowed to borrow any more funds under it.

However, Yarmar asked what would be cut to offset the increase in costs at HHS and Roosevelt.

Concrete continues to be poured at the new HHS site. In the coming week, further work will be done on footings and structural steel mobilization.

At Roosevelt, work is moving into the former office area. There has been work on the exterior framing and sheathing in the expansion, interior framing in the expansion, construction demo in phase 4 and addition of windows to the storm shelter.&nbsp;

Hays High School announces prom royalty candidates

The Ellis County Sheriff has reported a large grass fire in the area of the Sweetwater Ranch.

The public is advised to avoid the area southeast of Codell.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Kensington public water supply system located in Smith County.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

• Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water. • Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker. • If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears. • Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water. • Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

The advisory took effect on April 9 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. 

KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a line break resulting in a loss of pressure in the system.&nbsp; Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

 </figure>KDHETOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Kensington public water supply system located in Smith County.Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:• Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water. • Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker. • If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears. • Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water. • Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.The advisory took effect on April 9 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a line break resulting in a loss of pressure in the system.&nbsp; Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.For consumer questions, please contact the water system at 785-476-2668, or KDHE at 785-296-5514. BELLEVILLE — After serving three years as the
principal at USD 271 in Stockton, Lindsay Cravens has been named the new
principal at Republic County High School in Belleville.

The <a href="https://www.usd109.org/article/1541993">USD 109 Republic County </a>School District announced Cravens' hiring on Tuesday.

According to USD 109, Cravens previously
worked as a school counselor and classroom teacher.

Cravens and her husband, Sean, have two sons, Layton and Jhett Johnson.

She will begin serving in her new
position on Aug. 1.

Stockton principal named Republic County principal

Changing the Hays Middle School mascot is back on the table as of Monday night's Hays school board meeting.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/b03de214-a1e1-44df-8ea5-f597e5e62646">After a committee met in 2023 to discuss the Hays High School mascot, the Hays school board voted to keep the two mascots the same — the HHS as the Indains and HMS as the Falcons.</a>

The district is constructing a new high school and remodeling the current high school into a middle school as part of a $143.5 million school bond.

During that discussion, some residents suggested the middle school should also have the Indians as its mascot.

New board member Jayme Goetz asked that the board revisit the middle school mascot decision.

She said constituents contacted her about having the same mascot for the middle and high schools.

She said most of the messages she received before Monday were in favor of having the Indian mascot at both HHS and HMS, which, once the bond is complete, will be on the same campus on 13th Street.

That changed on Monday with more comments against making the Indians the Hays Middle School mascot.

Board member Ruth Ruder said she believes in one community and one campus.

"I am the wife of an American Indian. I think it is disheartening that we can't use the Indian. My family is proud of their Indian heritage. My husband has said over and over that he's Indian and doesn't understand why people find the mascot racist."

She said she thinks the school district has an obligation to the taxpayers, and a combined mascot would save money.

"I want our students to be proud of where we come from. You can’t erase history," Ruder said.

Goetz said she wants teachers and students to be heard.

About 80 percent of respondents to a 2023 survey about the mascot said they wanted to keep the Indian mascot. Bruce Rupp, HMS assistant principal/athletic director, said a similar number of middle school teachers said they wanted HMS also to be the Indians at that time.

Board member Meagan Zampieri-Lillpopp said&nbsp;she appreciated Ruder's story. 

"I also know that these days I study abuse. One thing a person uses to harm another is to turn them into a thing, and that is what mascots are. They are a symbol and not a person anymore," she said.

Anna Towns, who spoke during public comments, spoke against the Indian mascot. She noted the state recommended in 2022 Kansas schools move away from Native American mascots.

Zampieri-Lillpopp said she also had concerns the state would eventually require schools to eliminate Native American mascots.

"When they take the Indian off the top of the capitol," Ruder said, "we can talk about it then."

Board member Curt Vajnar said he thought parents would appreciate being able to wear one shirt for seven years a student is in school.

Board member Allen Park said other districts in Kansas have the same mascot for their middle and high schools.

The 2023 committee already recommended both schools use the same school colors. The HHS logo has been rebranded to an H with a spear point.

Rupp said the middle school could benefit from sharing some equipment with the high school.&nbsp;

However, he said he has an April 22 deadline to order equipment for the upcoming school year.

One of the best ways to keep your mind and body functioning at its best is to exercise. When I worked with small children we always used to say, “the best exercise for the brain is exercise!” The same holds true as we age. Exercise produces a wide range of benefits for not only our physical health, but also mental health. Regular participation in strengthening exercises can help you build muscle and increase bone density. It can also help relieve stress and reduce depression symptoms. The Stay Strong, Stay Healthy program focuses on improving the health and well-being of older adults. The goal of the program is to provide safe, structured and effective strength training for older adults. No one is too inactive to participate. Strength training promotes quality of life and independence, especially for adults over age 60. Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is an evidence-based program that has been shown to increase strength, balance, and flexibility.

You might be asking yourself, “I wonder what we’ll do?” It is an eight-week program that meets twice a week for one-hour. We will do warm up exercises, easy strengthening exercises, with or without weights, based on your preference, and finish with cool-down stretches and breathing exercises. The best part is there is no membership fees like at a gym and there is no special clothes or equipment needed. We will have weights available if you want to use them. You will work at your own pace and progress as you are able. There are modifications to the exercises based on your own fitness level.

If you would like more information before signing up, I will hold a gathering to answer questions and fill out paperwork at the Hays Senior Center on April 11, 2004 at 1 p.m. The classes will begin on May 14 and will continue until July 5. We will meet each Tuesday and Thursday at the Senior Center at 1 p.m. If you can’t make it on April 11th, please call the office if you have any questions or email Monique at moniquek@ksu.edu .There will be a one-time fee of $20 to participate in the eight-week program. All equipment will be provided.

The Ellis County Commission will get an update from the County Appraiser
at Tuesday’s meeting.

Appraiser Eugene Rupp said the real estate valuations
were mailed on March 25.

The commission will also hear an update on the Grove
Community Center and consider a $241,000 funding request for the project. It will also consider suggestions for the upcoming county road tour, lay out budget goals
for 2025, and consider grants for high-risk rural road projects.

Ellis County Commission set to receive valuations update Tuesday

Several K-State Research &amp; Extension Districts will be offering a Hazardous Occupation Safety Training in Agriculture or Tractor and Farm Safety Course for youth on Saturday, April 27th from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It will be held at Hoxie Implement, 933 Oak Ave. Hoxie, Kansas.

K-State Research &amp; Extension Agents will teach this course covering farm and machinery safety, including proper tractor operation and maintenance, grain safety, implement use safety, livestock safety and more. The United States Department of Labor requires youth 14 – 15 years of age attend this safety training in order to work on a farm for someone other than their parents, and in some instances even when working on the family farm.

Participants must complete some assignments before attending the training on the 27th. To obtain this information and to pay the $10 registration fee by Friday, April 19th. You will need to visit one of the following K-State Research &amp; Extension Offices – Twin Creeks, Golden Prairie, Phillips-Rooks and Cottonwood District.

Some Extension Offices may provide transportation to the training, don’t delay and register by Friday, April 19th for the Tractor &amp; Farm Safety Course in Hoxie.

Hays USD 489 BOE to discuss middle school mascot

The Ellis County Commission recently approved a final round
of updated job descriptions and the employee pay scale as part of a
compensation study.

Ellis County Administrator Darin Myers said most of the job descriptions from the wage and benefit study by the Arnold Group
from Wichita, which were approved by the commission last week, were either new descriptions
or updates and corrections. 

Completing the changes will cost the county $909,000, with the implementation set for the March 31 through April 13 pay period. The commission
set aside $950,000 as part of the budgeting process in 2024. While each
department will have an increase in its budget authority, the pay increases will not increase
the overall county budget. &nbsp;

Myers said the study compared similar counties but looked deeper at each job’s description. 

“The study itself was an in-depth look at job descriptions, not necessarily employees,” Myers said. So, taking the bias
completely out of who the employee is within that position or how long they've
been here, the initial part of the study was to look at the job descriptions.”

Myers said one of the most significant issues the study fixes is ensuring employees with fewer years of service aren't making more than their
more tenured coworkers. 

“I would say probably not every single department, but most
departments had some, if not a quite a bit of compression where there was pay
that was not appropriate for the amount of services they had been with the
county,” Myers said. 

“The previous policy, as well as what this policy did, did
not look at the individual employee or how well they do their job,” Myers said. "It was based on the scientific method to place somebody on a pay scale, and
then looking at their years of service on where they fit on the step.”

County Commissioner Michael Berges called the approval of
the pay scale “the most important decision we're going to make this year to
secure the county going forward.”

“When we're hiring individuals with whatever experience, we
know where they're going to be set,” Berges said. “What the expectation is
along their employment journey through the county, similar to if you worked at
any other private business, they have a salary set, and you have
expectations on what to do and how to achieve a higher pay."

the future because if the commission agrees, everyone will see a one step
increase on the pay scale every year. Myers said employee salaries make up about 53% of
expenditures.“It's helpful for commissions going
forward, being able to have that number going into the budget, instead of
waiting for departments, each department of saying this is where I
think wages should be. ...,” Berges said.Myers said the study did not ensure that every employee would
receive a cost of living increase (COLA). He said the 3.2% COLA for this year increase would cost the county about $330,000 and delay the implementation of the new study by five pay periods until the summer months.The commission laid out the 2025 budget calendar later in
the meeting. With the cost of salaries already set, they can consider a potential
COLA increase later in the budget process.The changes did not include an increase in pay for county administrator Myers. It did include a 3.2% COLA increase for attorneys
who work for the 23rd Judicial District and an increase for the fairgrounds
manager.The commission also approved a resolution that sets salaries
for elected officials.The resolution puts elected officials on a pay scale, just
like county employees, but there are no job descriptions.Myers said the goal of the change is to adjust all wages equally according to the new compensation study.
