The 2023 NAFEM Custom Equipment Design Contest brought us the Scrap and Stack. Claudia Harry from the Hansen Group and Alyssia Wright from Fulton County Schools designed a multi-function, line scrapping cart. They wanted to design a solution that would allow school cafeteria workers to clear the service line more efficiently. The solution they developed in partnership with New Age Industrial’s engineer, Phil Gottstine, is a cart that has a removable trash receptacle on the base, a top with a solid sheet and punched large square hole for scraping food waste into the trashcan, and a rack on the top to hold dirty steamtable pans and sheet pans. The Scrap and Stack allows for an entire line to be cleared in one pass, making just one trip to the dish room.

Norton company kicks off equipment design contest

I don’t know about you, but the time of year when I struggle to plan creative evening meals has arrived. Breakfast is easy--eggs and sausage or cereal. Lunch is easier—ham and cheese or peanut butter and jelly with diversions to leftovers. Supper—oh man. How does a cook keep coming up with something nutritious, delicious, and original. That O word is the bane of January and February. Winter’s not over, spring hasn’t begun, yards look dull and boring, and the garden exists only as a figment of my imagination. To top this grey season curse, taste buds crave something different. This has driven me on a quest to find interesting recipes.

We’ve been married long enough that over decades my guy has harvested wild game ingredients that led to pheasant nuggets, crappie tacos, wild turkey kabobs, elk or moose fajitas, venison goulash or tenderloin medallions cooked in wine. Unfortunately, we’re plumb out of game in the freezer so I’m desperate for more conventional concoctions.

That led me to The Pioneer Woman. She feeds a ranch family that’s hungry for tasty meals created from items normal cooks stock in their pantries. During my search, I spied her recipe for homemade hamburger helper. That struck a nostalgic chord, so after checking the supply list, my cupboard contained everything necessary to assemble it. To guarantee it was worth time and expense, I read the comment thread. Folks who’d made it responded enthusiastically, adding it came together quickly and provided leftovers for a second meal unless you had a huge family. The one question I failed to consider was how many appetites sat behind those plates. Our house is down to two people whose stomachs fill much faster than they used to.

What a misstep! I should have halved or better yet quartered that recipe. By the time I pulled our steaming supper out of the oven, enough food to satisfy eight hungry ranchers or farmers who had labored all day without a bite to eat bubbled and simmered along the edges of my largest dutch oven. While combining ingredients, I’d transferred the unbaked concoction from my small kettle into the big one--a less than subtle hint we’d eat the same thing for weeks.

Even though the instructions only called for a pound of ground beef and 4 slices of bacon, it also required a large onion, 3 garlic cloves, a slug of seasonings, 3 cups of beef broth, 15 oz. of tomato sauce, a cup of cream, and LOTS of cheese. Those items came before the addition of 12 oz. of elbow macaroni. Yep, that last ingredient soaked up the liquid and swelled 3 - 4 times its normal size.

Thank goodness I averted disaster when I poured the mixture into the big pan. Otherwise, I’d be scrapin’ burnt remains from the bottom of the oven and wouldn’t have time to write. The way it is now, I had plenty of delicious goodness to share and enough freezer meals I won’t need to cook for a long time. I can use those extra hours to crank out more columns. For future reference, the quest for interesting recipes ended. Boring is good.

Three-day weather outlook

A multiple-vehicle crash at about 4:45 p.m. Tuesday&nbsp;at Hall and 24th streets sent one person to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Hays police.

Four vehicles were stopped at a long line of traffic backed up at the 27th and Hall streets intersection. The first vehicle did not stop and caused a chain reaction. The first vehicle hit the second vehicle, and the second vehicle hit the third vehicle, and the third vehicle hit the fourth vehicle.

The drivers of the first, third and fourth vehicles did not receive serious injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was taken to the hospital via ambulance.

The driver of the first striking vehicle was cited, according to police.

The first and second vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

Hall Street was closed for a short time while the accident was being cleared.

Hays Police did not release the names of the drivers involved in the accident.

Update: Crash at 24th, Hall sends 1 to hospital

Two new developments in Hays will be further discussed during the city commission work session Thursday afternoon.

Grow Hays, developer of The Grove — housing and a community center to be built north of Hays Medical Center on Canterbury Drive - is moving forward with development plans for street, storm sewer, water and sanitary sewer improvements.

  Driggs Design Group, Hays, has prepared a contract for engineering services not to exceed $152,800.

City staff recommends approval of the engineering contract.

A developer agreement for WDG Addition will also be considered.&nbsp;

Werth Development Group has proposed an agreement with the city for the extension of water and sanitary sewer mains along Hall Street north of Interstate 70, adjacent to the WDG Addition. 

The city would pay the cost of upsizing the water and sewer lines from eight inches to 12 inches, which is supported by the city’s development policy. Cost would not exceed $359,260.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A 12-inch line is the minimum size required&nbsp;to allow for future development and build-out of the surrounding&nbsp;areas.

The addition was subdivided into two lots for future development. The north lot, comprised of 25 acres, is to be the location of the National Guard Readiness Center. There is no development plan for the south lot.&nbsp;&nbsp;

There would be no disruption to Hall Street as the water and sewer lines are installed.

"They should fit in the right-of-way," said Collin Bielser, Hays deputy city manager.

A $124,811 low-bid award for a new paper and cardboard recycling baler from&nbsp;Reaction Distributing, Ontario, Canada, will be considered.

A new baler installed in December 2022 from&nbsp;Taknek broke down almost immediately.&nbsp;Staff is pursuing legal recourse on the matter.

In other business, the commission will hear requests for two abatements:

• General nuisance and inoperable vehicle abatement 11111 Centennial Blvd. • Inoperable vehicle abatement at 206 E. 14th.&nbsp;

New developments in Hays to be further considered by city commission

An event that combined ashes and glitter for the celebration of Ash Wednesday has sparked a backlash in the Hays community.

Fort Hays State University students or members of the public were able to be blessed with the traditional ashes or ashes mixed with glitter at the Memorial Union.

Organizers billed the event as a means to foster inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community.

More than 200 people commented on a Facebook posting on the event. Some comments were supportive.

However, other community members expressed outrage about the event calling it "disgusting," sacrilege" and "evil."&nbsp;

The event was sponsored by the FHSU group US4U. This is the fifth year that the group has hosted the event since 2017.

"There is a tradition of exclusion, and we don't feel it really reflects what Jesus was about," Cheryl Duffy, Us4U adviser, said. "Jesus was about love and inclusion, and we want to open up that tradition to everyone.

"Ash Wednesday is a meaningful, reflective day. We want everyone to be able to experience that."

The Us4U information cards given at the event said, "Glitter is a sign of hope, which does not despair. It signals our promise to repent, to show up, to witness, to work. Glitter never gives up — and neither do we. Glitter+Ash captures the relationship between death and new life."

Jaelyn Sutter, group president, said people of any orientation can be religious.&nbsp;

"I feel that community has felt left out and excluded from religion," she said. "It is important to make sure they feel safe and they have an opportunity like everyone else."

In response to the backlash, Sutter said, "We stand for love and supporting the community. We are not going to let that affect us or influence us or change us."

Anna Towns, group member, said, "We are continuing a tradition our religious practice has always done; adding the glitter is just an option. It's not the only thing. We also have traditional ashes people can get. This was not meant in any way to be a mockery of other religions."&nbsp;

In years past, the event, which lasted two hours, drew about 30 people split fairly evenly between people who wished to receive traditional ashes and the glitter ashes, Towns said.

Ben Houchen of the St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Hays delivered the ashes.&nbsp;

"This is a day that requires all of us to remember where we come from and where we end up," he said. "That is a thing that should bring us unity. We all experience that.&nbsp;

"Specifically being able to bring in the unity of the LGBTQ+ community that has so often been excluded from church spaces is a very important thing for us to be able to do."

Houchen suggested those who feel anger and offense would turn to scripture.&nbsp;

"Romans 12 is pretty clear that if someone offends them, you feed them and clothe them and you care for them. That's our response as Christians, regardless of how we feel about a situation. Our response has to be one of love."

Brenda Rodger, pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church, was also present as a supporter.

Troy Miller, a pastor at the United Methodist Church in Hays, was originally slated to participate in the event. However, he canceled.

He said on Facebook, "Please know that after this advertisement came out, which I had no part in producing, I respectfully withdrew my participation. Being a local United Methodist pastor, I was asked by this student group to join other local pastors to impose ashes at the Union. I was not expecting this."

Critics of the event not only had issues with the nature of the event, but also how it was publicized.

The event was announced over the daily calendar system for FHSU. See the full announcement below.

Some of the critics were offended about the tone of the announcement, including the phrase, "Get your ash on campus!"

Laura Cune said she did not condemn the LGBTQ+ community as whole but was upset by this event.

In a lengthy Facebook post, she said, "I felt like my faith was not important to someone else. Not just someone else, a lot of someone elses. In fact, I felt like my faith was a joke. The first two sentences of the announcement are alarming, yes. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of “getting ashes to-go” on Ash Wednesday, because, to me, Ash Wednesday is a holy day that is celebrated within a church. There is no drive-thru, no to-go — you attend mass/service and celebrate the beginning of the Lenten period leading up to Easter, the most important time within our faith."

Kamryn Summers said on Facebook, "This is so saddening. I pray for everyone’s souls. Let yourself be saved by Jesus. Do as Jesus did. He left us a book on how to worship him. As tomorrow we worship him with his ashes, not glitter."

"God’s people better rise up. ... Not just here but across our nation and world. This is spiritual warfare and there is no other correct description. PERIOD!" said&nbsp;Ruby Goldman McGuill&nbsp;on Facebook.

Some also took aim directly at the university for allowing the club to announce the event on a university-wide system. Some community members even threatened to stop donating to the university.

FHSU University Communications made a statement about the posting of the event through the university calendar system Wednesday morning.

"The inclusion of the university brand mark in the header is not intended to serve as an affirmed or implied endorsement of the beliefs and views held or expressed by any Student Organization," the statement said. "In the interest of ensuring that the First Amendment right of every individual is respected, FHSU remains viewpoint-neutral on this and other Student Organization-led events."

The “Glitter + Ash” event scheduled for today (February 14) on campus is sponsored by Us4U and the United Methodist Campus Ministry. Both are recognized Student Organizations at Fort Hays State University, and both followed established protocols for creating, announcing, and holding this event.  </figure>By CRISTINA JANNEY Hays PostAn event that combined ashes and glitter for the celebration of Ash Wednesday has sparked a backlash in the Hays community.Fort Hays State University students or members of the public were able to be blessed with the traditional ashes or ashes mixed with glitter at the Memorial Union.Organizers billed the event as a means to foster inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community.More than 200 people commented on a Facebook posting on the event. Some comments were supportive.However, other community members expressed outrage about the event calling it "disgusting," sacrilege" and "evil."&nbsp;The event was sponsored by the FHSU group US4U. This is the fifth year that the group has hosted the event since 2017."There is a tradition of exclusion, and we don't feel it really reflects what Jesus was about," Cheryl Duffy, Us4U adviser, said. "Jesus was about love and inclusion, and we want to open up that tradition to everyone."Ash Wednesday is a meaningful, reflective day. We want everyone to be able to experience that."The Us4U information cards given at the event said, "Glitter is a sign of hope, which does not despair. It signals our promise to repent, to show up, to witness, to work. Glitter never gives up — and neither do we. Glitter+Ash captures the relationship between death and new life."Jaelyn Sutter, group president, said people of any orientation can be religious.&nbsp;"I feel that community has felt left out and excluded from religion," she said. "It is important to make sure they feel safe and they have an opportunity like everyone else."<figure>

 </figure>In response to the backlash, Sutter said, "We stand for love and supporting the community. We are not going to let that affect us or influence us or change us."Anna Towns, group member, said, "We are continuing a tradition our religious practice has always done; adding the glitter is just an option. It's not the only thing. We also have traditional ashes people can get. This was not meant in any way to be a mockery of other religions."&nbsp;In years past, the event, which lasted two hours, drew about 30 people split fairly evenly between people who wished to receive traditional ashes and the glitter ashes, Towns said.You can learn more about US4U on Facebook at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.facebook.com/Us4U.fhsu">www.facebook.com/Us4U.fhsu</a>.Ben Houchen of the St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Hays delivered the ashes.&nbsp;"This is a day that requires all of us to remember where we come from and where we end up," he said. "That is a thing that should bring us unity. We all experience that.&nbsp;"Specifically being able to bring in the unity of the LGBTQ+ community that has so often been excluded from church spaces is a very important thing for us to be able to do."Houchen suggested those who feel anger and offense would turn to scripture.&nbsp;"Romans 12 is pretty clear that if someone offends them, you feed them and clothe them and you care for them. That's our response as Christians, regardless of how we feel about a situation. Our response has to be one of love."Brenda Rodger, pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church, was also present as a supporter.Troy Miller, a pastor at the United Methodist Church in Hays, was originally slated to participate in the event. However, he canceled.He said on Facebook, "Please know that after this advertisement came out, which I had no part in producing, I respectfully withdrew my participation. Being a local United Methodist pastor, I was asked by this student group to join other local pastors to impose ashes at the Union. I was not expecting this."Critics of the event not only had issues with the nature of the event, but also how it was publicized.The event was announced over the daily calendar system for FHSU. Not just someone else, a lot of someone elses. In fact, I felt like my faith was a joke. The first two sentences of the announcement are alarming, yes. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of “getting ashes to-go” on Ash Wednesday, because, to me, Ash Wednesday is a holy day that is celebrated within a church. There is no drive-thru, no to-go — you attend mass/service and celebrate the beginning of the Lenten period leading up to Easter, the most important time within our faith."Kamryn Summers said on Facebook, "This is so saddening. I pray for everyone’s souls. Let yourself be saved by Jesus. Do as Jesus did. He left us a book on how to worship him. As tomorrow we worship him with his ashes, not glitter."Others took a harder line."God’s people better rise up. ... Not just here but across our nation and world. This is spiritual warfare and there is no other correct description. PERIOD!" said&nbsp;Ruby Goldman McGuill&nbsp;on Facebook.Some also took aim directly at the university for allowing the club to announce the event on a university-wide system. Some community members even threatened to stop donating to the university.FHSU University Communications made a statement about the posting of the event through the university calendar system Wednesday morning."The inclusion of the university brand mark in the header is not intended to serve as an affirmed or implied endorsement of the beliefs and views held or expressed by any Student Organization," the statement said. Tail-wagging therapy drives independence for people with disabilities in northwest Kansas through the LINK therapy dog program.

LINK Inc. is a disability agency. Fifty-one percent of its staff members have disabilities of some sort.

The non-profit organization has been assisting people with basic at-home tasks to live independently, such as cooking, cleaning, organization and self-care.

Additional services provided by LINK, Inc. include the Community Action Public Policy Change Agents and the Kansas Telecommunication Access Program.

In 2017, LINK welcomed its first therapy dog, also named Link, to give a helping paw at the center.

Chief Executive Officer Angie Zimmerman said Link was introduced to serve as both a therapy dog and provide emotional support.

"He's around all types of people with disabilities," she said. "He's learned to provide comfort for them and lets people hold him."

Link, a Shorkie, is a crossbreed of a Shih Tzu and a Yorkie. He was born with a leg that required amputation due to his irregularity.

The missing front leg limits his ability to walk and due to his form of maintaining balance, he's expected to develop arthritis that will further limit his mobility over time.

Link's numerous changes in homes and families have also led to separation anxiety, a trait Zimmerman said suits his role at the firm well.

"With him having disabilities himself, he fits right in," she said.&nbsp;

The motivation behind pet therapy at LINK, Inc. was to provide companionship to individuals in need who desire a pet but may be unable to care for one.

LINK has also advocated for individuals lacking access to service dogs, recognizing the significance of pet therapy for those in need.

During the pandemic, Link welcomed his new colleague at the center, Winston, a Goldendoodle.

Winston received professional training from <a href="https://www.lorenzosdogtrainingteam.com/">Lorenzo's Dog Training Team</a>, an organization renowned for training thousands of dogs.

LINK employees and clients hold a deep affection for the two dogs, with some visiting the center specifically to spend time with them.

"Winston is a gentle giant that loves attention," one client said. "He helps provide a relaxing environment to walk into."

Many individuals utilizing the organization's resources often experience anxiety due to the uncertainty of their future, Zimmerman said.

"We have a lot of stressed-out people coming in, whether it's a direct support worker or a potential consumer," she said.

The pair play a role in assisting overwhelmed clients and employees, easing their anxiety by accompanying them throughout their day.

Another client who has received support from LINK with Medicaid and Social Security said that Link helps keep their mind calm while doing paperwork.

"I'm always anxious when I have appointments," the consumer said. "Link seems to sense I need help getting through paperwork and will let me hold and pet him."

The center, 2401 E. 13th St, is open 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.&nbsp;

LINK Inc. therapy dogs support people with disabilities

The Tiger FIRST Robotics team is looking for sponsors for its inaugural year of competition.

This year 24 students from Thomas More Prep-Marian, Kansas Academy of Math and Science, and&nbsp; Hays High School will participate. The team has six mentors from&nbsp;Thomas More Prep, Hays High, Kansas Academy&nbsp;Academy of Math and Science, Fort Hays State&nbsp;University, and TreeTop Security. 

The students build robots. The robots are used in an arena in competition with other teams from across the nation to place rings in shoots that trigger speakers. Each time a speaker is activated, the students earn points.

The teams are allowed only six weeks to design, build and test a robot.

The nationwide competition is funded through a grant from NASA. The competition has more than 9,000 teams this year.

Students exclusively qualify for $80 million in&nbsp;scholarships as participants of FIRST Robotics. 

However, local funds are needed to pay for robot components, team T-shirts, banners, travel, registration fees and tools used in the repair pit during the competitions.

The team will compete in Kansas City and Oklahoma this spring with the hopes of earning a trip to nationals in Houston.

Treetop Security and STEM Harvest are providing support for the team.

Robotics team from Hays seeks funds to support part in national competition

Our bodies are made for activity, but modern conveniences allow us to be increasingly sedentary. This can place our health at risk for many chronic diseases. Still, regular exercise contributes to longevity, reduces the risk of falling, increases flexibility, promotes restful sleep, and improves mood and mental health.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults participate in aerobic activities like walking each week and incorporate strengthening exercises for all major muscle groups at least twice a week.

The good news is that the Stay Strong, Stay Healthy program at the Great Bend Activity Center is a class that can help you achieve enough physical activity and reap the benefits of regular movement!

In a typical Stay Strong, Stay Healthy class, participants will complete a low-impact warm-up, eight upper- and lower-body strengthening exercises, and cool-down stretches. They will also learn about nutrition topics specific to older adults.

The Stay Strong, Stay Healthy program is built on simple exercises that will improve strength, balance, health, and state of mind. Building strength promotes quality of life and independence, especially for adults over 60. The program is designed for simplicity; each participant will start at their own level and be encouraged to progress gradually.

The class will meet for one hour, two times each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning on March 12th. To register, call the Cottonwood Extension office at 620-793-1910 and schedule your orientation session by February 19th. The fee is for the eight-week series is $20.

House Bill 2680 would create a traffic infraction for knowingly leaving a child eight years of age or younger inside a motor vehicle without being under the supervision of someone twelve years of age or older. Under this bill, fines that are a result of a violation would be credited to a child and family trust account. Violation of such a traffic infraction would result in a $100 fine, notwithstanding additional fines handed down in court. The bill would also require information about leaving children unattended in a vehicle be included in the Kansas driving handbook and training manual.

House Bill 2687 would establish a child tax credit starting in the tax year 2024 and every year thereafter. Starting with those who make $0 to $25,000 in gross income, the credits will amount to a $600. Married individuals, who file separate returns, may claim only half of the amount of credit per qualifying child.

House Bill 2684 would allow a city to impose an earning tax, which is a tax on salaries, wages, commission or other compensation earned by residents or non-residents of the city for work or services provided within the city after being approved by the majority of electors of that city. All taxes collected under this bill would be required to go towards infrastructure purposes.

House Bill 2691 establishes that private property should not be taken or damaged for public use without just compensation. If a landowner's entire land is taken for public utility for the construction, maintenance or repair of electrical lines, they are entitled to compensation and measure of damages no less than fair market value of property, multiplied by 150%.

I introduced House Bill 2651, which would require entities that cause damage to any crops or land, notify the landowner, request a copy of the land lease agreement and send reimbursement to the landowner and tenant as outlined in lease agreement.

These are a handful of bills introduced, and we will need to see if they will have a scheduled hearing in their committee. Many of these bills may not even have a hearing or make it out of committee.

The House Appropriations Committee continued discussing the various agency budgets for the state of Kansas. We also conducted a bill hearing that would authorize the governor to submit a budget report to the legislature that increases total expenditures for the next fiscal year by not more than 2% of the total expenditures from the previous year.

We passed two bills out of committee for possible debate on the House floor.&nbsp;

Wednesday, we worked&nbsp;Senate Bill 195&nbsp;which authorizes the Children’s Cabinet to form 501©(3) for fundraising for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library book gifting program. We also worked&nbsp;House Bill 2491, which abolishes the Law Enforcement Training Center Fund and is funded by the State General Fund.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This week is the fifth week of the 2024 legislative session, and we spent most of the time debating bills and resolutions in the chamber of the Kansas House of Representatives. Here is a look at some of those bills:

House Concurrent Resolution 6035 would affirm state sovereignty and supports the state of Texas in its efforts to combat illegal immigration. The resolution also encourages Governor Laura Kelly to offer the services of the Kansas National Guard to the state of Texas.

House Bill 2578, which relates to certified community behavioral health clinics and provides for renewal certification of programs and treatments that have been previously certified.

House Bill 2522 relates to the release of offenders and requires the Secretary to assist inmates with obtaining identification and employment related documentation prior to the offender’s release date.

I voted “yes” on the resolution and two bills.

WAYMASTER: From the Dome to Home, Feb. 7

Winter may be imposing its lull on some people’s exercise programs, but K-State Research and Extension, Cottonwood District is gearing up for one their most popular programs.

We have our thoughts squarely fixed on spring’s warmer days and a program that is nearing a quarter century of getting folks moving.

Walk Kansas is a team-based challenged that encourages people to walk, jog, run, bike swim or do whatever they need to live more healthfully. The program routinely draws more than 5,000 participants in Kansas and across the country.

Walk Kansas was founded in 2001 on the principle that if teams of four to six people would meet the minimum guidelines for physical activity over eight weeks, they could collectively and virtually walk across the state of Kansas – or approximately 423 miles.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each week – or about 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

When you think about a moderate activity, there’s an easy way to gauge if you’re getting that. It’s called the Talk Test. Whatever activity you’re doing, if you can barely have a conversation, but not sing, then you’re exercising at a moderate level.

The Cottonwood District is encouraging those interested in Walk Kansas to begin forming their teams now. Registration opens on March 4, and the eight-week challenge will run from March 31 through May 25. Walk Kansas is also open to those who want to take on the eight-week program by themselves, rather than forming teams. Cost is $10 per person.

Walk Kansas is open to participants beyond Kansas. In fact, captains can form their team with family members or friends who live in other states or even other countries. Each team member walks when they want, where they want.

The bottom line is to just move, no matter what type of activity you enjoy, to limit those periods of time when you’re sitting. A lot of us have jobs in which we do more sitting and working in front of computers, and that’s exhausting in it’s own way. So, we need to get into the habit of getting up every 30 minutes, which is ideal, but at least once an hour to move around a little bit. That’s a habit that you can get into that is really good.

Obesity and overweight rates have been going up rapidly in our state and country. Any way we can find to move ourselves and our children will be beneficial. Walk Kansas is open to school age children as well. This might be a good incentive to get kids moving!
