The Kansas Department of Transportation will begin work on a pair of bridge repair projects along eastbound I-70 in Trego County starting Monday, June 3.

Project work will include milling, patching and resurfacing the bridge decks on the structures located approximately 5 miles east of WaKeeney and 4.3 miles east of Ogallah. Lane closures will be in effect through the work zones, with speeds reduced to 60 mph. KDOT reminds motorists to slow down and stay alert for construction equipment and crews when traveling through the work zones.

Project work is expected to be complete in early October, conditions permitting.

GREAT BEND — The Kansas Wetlands Education Center offers a monthly series to get kids outside exploring and off their devices. KWEC’s WILD programs are free of charge and don’t require registration.

On June 14 from 10-11 a.m., kids can discover what types of mammals live on the KWEC nature trail. Participants will check Sherman traps, a box-style trap to catch live small mammals. They will identify, collect data, and then release any mammals captured. In addition, participants will study some of the tracks in the area and look for any other clues mammals may have left along the trail.

On July 12 - 10-11 a.m., if it flies, crawls, jumps, or swims, kids will want to catch it during our July WILD activity. After crafting a bug catcher, armed with nets, participants will head out to the KWEC nature trail in search of insects. They will see what types of insects they catch and then identify them. After walking the trail, participants will examine and hold the KWEC classroom Vietnamese Walking Sticks, Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, and Giant Millipedes.

Join KWEC on select Fridays from 1-4 p.m. this summer for a free, come-and-go nature craft. Before completing the craft, attendees will participate in a quick learning activity about the craft theme. The activities are geared toward kids 5-12, but all ages are welcome.

June 14 - Seed Kaleidoscope - craft and decorate a mesmerizing kaleidoscope using seeds, beads, and other nature items for a unique display of images. June 21 - Pollinator Puddler - Celebrate Pollinator Week by creating a small dish with jewels and rocks to create a water source for bees and butterflies. July 5 - Snake Skin Suncatcher - using sheds from the KWEC snakes, create a unique suncatcher to place in the window. July 12 - Hammered Flower Banner - after selecting colorful blooms from the KWEC pollinator garden and marsh area, pound the colors onto a banner to take home!

For those who want a more immersive nature experience, KWEC is offering&nbsp;Nature Discovery Camps. Camps feature outdoor exploration, including animal and plant investigations through fun activities, nature-related crafts, and games.

For students who have completed 1st-3rd grades Registration Fee - $20 The deadline to register is June 26 Campers must bring a sack lunch. KWEC will provide snacks.&nbsp; Before and aftercare is available for an additional $10 - 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Three-day weather outlook

We all know that relationships are an important part of life, but they are more impactful than we give them credit for. Dependable family members, stress-relieving friendships, and supportive coworkers bring color to life. These connections even support healthy behaviors, enhance mental health, and bolster brain function.

Who would have thought that relationships could have such a large stake in physical health? When we think about ways to improve well-being, many of us envision a leafy green salad, not a game of cards. However, the people we surround ourselves with (or don’t) have a larger role than we imagine.

First, quality connections give us purpose. If you’ve heard of the Blue Zones, you likely know the term “ikigai” that Okinawan centurions use to describe their purpose in life. In this culture, people have a distinct reason for waking up each morning, and for many, ikigai revolves around loved ones. Whether it is providing for children, caring for parents, or spending time with friends, what a person can give, adds meaning to life. This sense of purpose provides a deep understanding of the big picture which fuels optimism and resilience that strengthens mental health. People with a strong ikigai, are also more likely to prioritize healthy behaviors so they can achieve their ultimate purpose.

Relationships not only give meaning to life, they can provide a mental workout. Engaging in social activities stimulate various regions of the brain by strengthening neural circuits, producing hormones, and increasing connectivity. Social butterflies are more likely to have good cognition and memory while isolated people have a 50% increased risk of developing dementia. Just like physical exercise is good for the body, socialization is a workout for the brain.

A sense of community can give meaning to life, encourage healthy behaviors, and protect the brain. It can also support the immune system and strengthen the heart! So, how can you enrich your relationships?

1. Be curious. Take an interest in others and ask lots of questions. This opens up a door for conversation and lets others know you care about them. When you are curious, you may realize how much you have in common with others.

2. Practice generosity. We can’t control how people engage with us, but practicing the golden rule can help others reciprocate generosity in time and kindness.

3. Listen to understand. Sometimes we engage in conversation only to hear ourselves talk. Instead of trying to prove a point, slowing down and listening intently to what another has to say provides an atmosphere for connection. It also is a great way to learn through others' experiences.

4. Check in often. Creating lasting relationships takes time and effort. The more you engage with a person, the stronger your bond can grow. Be sure to schedule regular gatherings and phone calls to strengthen your social circle.

Relationships are a valuable part of life and the proof is evident. Investing in others provides physical benefits, strengthens mental well-being, and provides a sense of purpose. Taking an interest in our social fitness not only supports others, but it sustains physical health and happiness.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a Nitrate Advisory for the City of Lucas public water supply system located in Russell County. The advisory is being issued because of system upgrades that may take several weeks.&nbsp;

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:&nbsp;

The advisory took effect on&nbsp;May 28,&nbsp;2024&nbsp;and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of&nbsp;nitrate&nbsp;contamination&nbsp;in excess of&nbsp;the MCL&nbsp;are resolved.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The&nbsp;City&nbsp;will provide free of charge an alternate source of drinking water for all infants less than six months of age, pregnant women, and other at-risk customers as&nbsp;identified&nbsp;by a health care provider. Alternate water will be available for customer pick-up at the Home Oil and Service Convenience Store, 5499 Hwy 18. Residents must present a coupon from the City of Lucas&nbsp;in order to&nbsp;receive the bottled water. Coupons are available at the Lucas Civic Center, 201 S. Main.&nbsp;Regardless of whether the public&nbsp;water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced an Advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.&nbsp;

Nitrate advisory issued for the city of Lucas, Russell County

After settling for a second-place finish Friday night in Colby, Tathan Burkhart and his crew made the necessary changes to help #2fiddy find victory lane at his hometown track of RPM Speedway.

Tathan and his competitors all had to keep up with changing track conditions as the night started with a dry, and slick racetrack, that quickly turned to a wet and tacky surface as Mother Nature stepped in twice with rain showers that delayed the night.

Eighty-four IMCA race teams checked into the legendary RPM Speedway for the Memorial Day Weekend Special, and the race fans at the track and those at home watching on IMCA.TV were treated to quite the show despite the rain.

Visiting victory lane along with Tathan Burkhart in the stock car, were Kyle Rohleder the Wakeeney native in the modified class, Connor Schwien the Russell native in the sport compact, Cody Williams the Minneapolis native in the hobby stock, and Luke Stallbaumer, the Tecumseh native in the sport mod.

The sport compacts started the night off with two six-lap heat races with brothers Connor and Jake Schwien picking up wins. After a tornado hit the Schwien's shop last weekend, it was an emotional scene seeing the brothers do well at the track Saturday night.

The 15-lap feature event had a front row of Kevin Tremblay and Brock Leibhart, a three-wide battle broke out right away as Connor Schwien used the middle lane to split the front row to take the race lead.

Lap two saw Madison Reed jump to fourth after going three wide in turns three and four. Meanwhile, Connor Schwien was running away from the field. Late in the feature, Jake Schwien used a three-wide move and slider move to take over the fourth place. Meanwhile, the top three cars single-filed out, with Connor Schwien holding a huge lead.

Connor Schwien picked up the feature win, Rileigh Flohrs was second, Kiowa Higdon was third, Jake Schwien was fourth, and Madison Reed was fifth. Rileigh Flohrs was the hard charger in the event, gaining four spots, while Connor, Jake Schwien and Dave Kappel all gained three spots each.

The stock cars were second on the program they ran one eight-lap heat race won by Tathan Burkhart, and their 15-lap feature started with a front row of Josh Hudson and Tathan Burkhart.

Tathan rocketed to the early race lead and quickly Kyle Pfeifer settled into a battle with Josh Hudson for the second-place position.

Pfeifer had a better car going into the corner, but coming out of the corner, Hudson was able to pull away. At the halfway point Tathan held a full straightaway advantage over the second-place battle. 

One lap later, Kyle Pfeifer was able to gain the second-place position. Tathan went on to pick up the feature win, his second IMCA feature win of the season. Second was Kyle Pfeifer, third was Josh Hudson, fourth was Garrett Hager and fifth was Troy Burkhart. The hard charger in the event was Kyle Pfeifer, who gained two spots.

The hobby stocks were third on the program. They ran three eight-lap heat races won by Trent Matson, Cody Williams and Jonathan Saliba. Their 20-lap feature had a front row of Cody Williams and Tyler Heath. Williams gained the early advantage.

Meanwhile, a four-wide battle broke out as Morgan and Zach Olmstead started pushing their way to the front of the pack. Lap two saw Zach Olmstead break into the top five.

A couple of laps later, Zach found himself in third place as Cody Williams entered lapped traffic. A couple of laps later, Williams got into heavy lapped traffic but still held a two-second lead over second-place running Tyler Heath.

At the halfway point, Cody Williams led over Tyler Heath, Zach Olmstead, Morgan Olmstead, and Jonathan Saliba. Alec Jeske went for a spin out of turn four and set up a late-race restart with just a handful of laps to go. 

Williams restarted the field and quickly pulled away again. Zach held second for a moment, but Tyler Heath was able to get it back, and Morgan got by his brother Zach as well.

Zach took the third place back down the backstretch. Meanwhile Williams checked out from the field and led the remainder of the feature. Cody Williams won, picking up his 15 IMCA feature win of the season, second was Tyler Heath, third was Zach Olmstead, fourth was Morgan Olmstead and fifth was Trent Matson.

The hard charger in the event was Billy McBride who grabbed nine spots, other nice runs included Zach Olmstead up seven spots, Morgan Olmstead and Taylor Croisant grabbed five spots each.

The sport mods were fourth on the program. They ran three eight-lap heat races won by Blaine Walt, Luke Stallbaumer and Douglas Beaman, their 20-lap feature had a front row of Sage Dinkel and Dougals Beaman. Sage Dinkel grabbed the early race lead.

Meanwhile a four-wide battle broke out as Brianna Maughlin started moving forward. Luke Stallbaumer grabbed the lead out of turns three and four to lead the first lap and a debris caution came out.

Stallbaumer restarted the field, and the caution came right back out as Sam McCune and Dylan Jacobson went for a spin in turn two. Stallbaumer restarted the field again, and Maughlin was able to get to the third-place position right away. 

A couple of laps later, Dalton Bell, Tyler Watts and Blaine Walt started moving to the front. Maughlin got by Beaman for second place, and Blaine Walt settled into fourth place.

Later on, Blaine Walt was able to get to second place in search of his 100th career win. Walt would be denied his big win, though, as Luke Stallbaumer ran a perfect race to pick up his first feature win of the season.

 Second was Blaine Walt, third was Brianna Maughlin, fourth was Jacob Olmstead and fifth was Tyler Watts. The hard chargers in the event were Blaine Walt and Jacob Olmstead who gained eight spots each. Other nice runs included Brady Skrdlant up seven spots, Brianna Maughlin, Ryan Moser and Brendyn Nordyke all gained five spots each as well.

The modifieds closed out the program. They ran three eight-lap heat races won by Dylan Sherfick, Daniel Gottschalk and Dakota Sproul. Their 20-lap feature started with a front row of Trevor Geist and Don Geist. 

Trevor gained the early advantage, but quickly, Kyle Rohleder settled into second place and took the lead on lap two. By lap four, Dylan Sherfick found third place, and a lap later, Trevor Geist settled into second place.

 Jeremy Frenier reached third place just before a caution came out. Rohleder restarted the field, and Clay Money quickly made a three-wide move to pick up a position.

 Meanwhile at the halfway point, Dylan Sherfick and Kyle Rohleder raced side-by-side for the race lead. In the closing laps Dalton Murphy spun to bring out a caution after Rohleder had solidified the race lead once again. 

Rohleder restarted the field with just five laps to go and would lead the reminder of the feature to grab his first win of the season.

Second place was Dylan Sherfick, third was Daniel Gottschalk, fourth was Jeremy Frenier and fifth was Dakota Sproul. The hard charger in the event was Jesse Richter, who gained eight spots. Other nice runs included Jeremy Frenier up seven spots, and Dylan Sherfick and Daniel Gottschalk both grabbed five spots each.

 </figure>By SHELDON WICKAR Special to the Hays PostAfter settling for a second-place finish Friday night in Colby, Tathan Burkhart and his crew made the necessary changes to help #2fiddy find victory lane at his hometown track of RPM Speedway.Tathan and his competitors all had to keep up with changing track conditions as the night started with a dry, and slick racetrack, that quickly turned to a wet and tacky surface as Mother Nature stepped in twice with rain showers that delayed the night.Eighty-four IMCA race teams checked into the legendary RPM Speedway for the Memorial Day Weekend Special, and the race fans at the track and those at home watching on IMCA.TV were treated to quite the show despite the rain.Visiting victory lane along with Tathan Burkhart in the stock car, were Kyle Rohleder the Wakeeney native in the modified class, Connor Schwien the Russell native in the sport compact, Cody Williams the Minneapolis native in the hobby stock, and Luke Stallbaumer, the Tecumseh native in the sport mod.<figure>

 </figure>The sport compacts started the night off with two six-lap heat races with brothers Connor and Jake Schwien picking up wins. After a tornado hit the Schwien's shop last weekend, it was an emotional scene seeing the brothers do well at the track Saturday night.The 15-lap feature event had a front row of Kevin Tremblay and Brock Leibhart, a three-wide battle broke out right away as Connor Schwien used the middle lane to split the front row to take the race lead.Lap two saw Madison Reed jump to fourth after going three wide in turns three and four. Meanwhile, Connor Schwien was running away from the field. Late in the feature, Jake Schwien used a three-wide move and slider move to take over the fourth place. Meanwhile, the top three cars single-filed out, with Connor Schwien holding a huge lead.Connor Schwien picked up the feature win, Rileigh Flohrs was second, Kiowa Higdon was third, Jake Schwien was fourth, and Madison Reed was fifth. Rileigh Flohrs was the hard charger in the event, gaining four spots, while Connor, Jake Schwien and Dave Kappel all gained three spots each.<figure>

 </figure>The stock cars were second on the program they ran one eight-lap heat race won by Tathan Burkhart, and their 15-lap feature started with a front row of Josh Hudson and Tathan Burkhart.Tathan rocketed to the early race lead and quickly Kyle Pfeifer settled into a battle with Josh Hudson for the second-place position.Pfeifer had a better car going into the corner, but coming out of the corner, Hudson was able to pull away. At the halfway point Tathan held a full straightaway advantage over the second-place battle. One lap later, Kyle Pfeifer was able to gain the second-place position. Tathan went on to pick up the feature win, his second IMCA feature win of the season. Second was Kyle Pfeifer, third was Josh Hudson, fourth was Garrett Hager and fifth was Troy Burkhart. The hard charger in the event was Kyle Pfeifer, who gained two spots.<figure>

A couple of laps later, Williams got into heavy lapped traffic but still held a two-second lead over second-place running Tyler Heath.At the halfway point, Cody Williams led over Tyler Heath, Zach Olmstead, Morgan Olmstead, and Jonathan Saliba. Alec Jeske went for a spin out of turn four and set up a late-race restart with just a handful of laps to go. Williams restarted the field and quickly pulled away again. Zach held second for a moment, but Tyler Heath was able to get it back, and Morgan got by his brother Zach as well.Zach took the third place back down the backstretch. Meanwhile Williams checked out from the field and led the remainder of the feature. Cody Williams won, picking up his 15 IMCA feature win of the season, second was Tyler Heath, third was Zach Olmstead, fourth was Morgan Olmstead and fifth was Trent Matson.The hard charger in the event was Billy McBride who grabbed nine spots, other nice runs included Zach Olmstead up seven spots, Morgan Olmstead and Taylor Croisant grabbed five spots each.<figure>

Tathan Burkhart grabs hometown win at RPM in Hays

LA CROSSE—The American Sprint Car Series National Tour will kickstart the summer with a visit to two Kansas bullrings.

The weekend begins with a Friday night contest at Rush County Speedway in La Crosse (May 31), and continues 80 miles to the south at Dodge City Raceway Park (June 1).&nbsp;

Both nights will feature a $4,000-to-win, $400-to-start purse. The Sprint Cars will be joined by IMCA Hobby Stocks and Cruisers at Rush County, while the Dodge City itinerary will include IMCA Sport Mods and IMCA Hobby Stocks.

The pair of races are the final warmup before the five-night ASCS Speedweek in Arkansas and Oklahoma, June 11-15.

Tickets will be available at the gate on both nights. Here are the top storylines entering the weekend:

BERGMAN GOING SOLO:&nbsp;A win at Super Bee Speedway and a second-place run at Red Dirt Raceway has Seth Bergman sitting atop the National Tour standings entering the weekend. However, he’ll have a new, yet familiar, look beginning Friday at Rush County. Bergman has parted ways with TwoC Racing to return to his family-owned team.

After Johnson suffered a hand injury in an April crash, he elected to retire from driving and tapped Bergman to replace him behind the wheel of the No. 2C machine.

In addition to the pair of National Tour starts, Bergman drove Johnson’s car to a 14th-place run in local competition at Creek County Speedway on May 11 before his departure was announced days later.

Bergman shouldn’t take long to get reacclimated to his former team, as his most recent run in his No. 23 car resulted in a win on March 23 in a Warrior Region event at Creek County. The Washington native has also picked up 17 National Tour wins in his own equipment, most recently at Outlaw Motor Speedway in Oklahoma on June 2, 2023.

RUSH COUNTY DEBUT:&nbsp;Friday’s stop at Rush County will not only mark the first ASCS event at the facility, but the largest Sprint Car event in track history.

However, the track has hosted almost two dozen United Rebel Sprint Series races for the 305 Sprint Car division, and multiple National Tour full-timers have found Victory Lane with the Series. Jason Martin won three out of his four URSS appearances in La Crosse, while Zach Blurton picked up the win on July 31, 2021.

Blurton also brought home a fifth-place finish with the Rocky Mountain Midget Racing Association in 2023. As one of the only drivers in the field with recent experience at Rush County, Friday night could be an opportunity for Blurton to collect his first National Tour top 10 of the season.

GETTING INTO DODGE:&nbsp;Last season, the series made its first stop at Dodge City Raceway Park in 11 years, but this time around, fans have only had to wait 11 months.

Martin and Matt Covington split the victories in 2023, and both will look to collect another Dodge City trophy in the Steve King Memorial. Martin finished second behind Covington on night two last year to give himself a 1.5 average finish on the weekend; that, along with a slew of URSS and local victories at the 3/8-mile track, should make him one of the favorites Saturday night.

The Sprint Cars were joined by the RMMRA a year ago in a Feature won by National Tour full-timer Kyler Johnson. The Midget win was Johnson’s third in as many years at Dodge City, following victories with the URSS in 2021 and the RMMRA in 2022. A native of nearby Quinter, Johnson will look to use his home-field advantage to score his first ASCS triumph.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Ford Fusion driven by Joshua B. Burkholder, 41, Hays, was northbound on Interstate 135 just north of Kansas 196.

The car moved to the left lane to avoid traffic backed up due to an oversized load stopped.&nbsp; The Ford rear-ended a 2015 GMC Terrain driven by Kandace L&nbsp;Broussard, 21, Lincoln, Nebraska.

EMS transported&nbsp;Burkholder,&nbsp;Broussard and a passenger in the SUV identified as Jenefer M. Bromm, 49, Lincoln, Nebraska, to Wesley Medical Center. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Man from Hays hospitalized after rear-end crash

A building in downtown Hays that has sat vacant for more than 40 years is on its way to being reconstructed.

Local developer Adam Pray has plans to rehabilitate the former Hays State Bank building at&nbsp;1108 N. Main into a luxury&nbsp;short-term rental Airbnb called Chestnut Suites. Built in 1965, the building later housed Sunflower Electric until the 1980s.

Pray is seeking a $300,000 community development block grant through the&nbsp;Kansas Department of Commerce's&nbsp;commercial rehabilitation program.

Hays city commissioners approved resolutions on Thursday to declare the building blighted and apply for the grant. Cities and counties must be official applicants for those state funds.

A matching fund of 25% is required as part of the grant program and will be paid by the developer. No city funds would be disbursed for the $3.26 million project.&nbsp;

Renovation plans call for creating 24 to 26 rooms for short-term or 30-plus-day renters. The rooms would be designed similar to those of traditional hotels. A guest common area will include an ice machine, microwave, sink, dining room area and bar. Laundry will also be available for the long-term tenants.&nbsp;

Grow Hays executive director Doug Williams said in a KAYS Morning Blend interview Friday that the city would benefit from having the property back on the tax rolls after 40 years.

Williams also addressed parking concerns in downtown Hays and said he anticipates&nbsp;older buildings that are no longer viable could be turned into parking lots in the next five to 10 years.

"This will be just down the street from The Fox and The Strand venues. People can stay at the Airbnb and walk to their events," Williams said.&nbsp;

He also talked about the increased economic benefits for downtown retail shops and restaurants.

Because the building is located in the historic Chestnut Street District, the facade cannot be updated or changed for five years, according to National Register of Historic Places regulations, Pray told commissioners.&nbsp;

Redevelopment north of Interstate 70 was also addressed.

Resolutions were approved for a public hearing to establish a community improvement district and issue industrial revenue bonds for Vernie's Trux-N-Equip. The company plans to construct a new shop and office at 4885 Vine, the site of the former Hays Livestock sales barn.

The truck equipment dealer and repair shop will relocate from its present site on 41st Street, which has been sold to&nbsp;Lewis Chrysler for expansion, Williams said.

The 2% sales tax on the project site will generate about $1 million during the 22-year term for eligible project expenditures.

Utilization of the industrial revenue bonds will allow the developer to obtain a sales tax exemption for all purchases related to the construction of the project.

Proposed redevelopment in downtown Hays will rehab blighted building   

Not everyone can say they like their job.

Even fewer people can say they still enjoy what they do at the age of 90.

And just one man, Doyle Archer, Logan, can say he's the "Oldest Truck/Lorry/Heavy Goods Vehicle Male Driver."

Archer, a driver for Coomes, Inc., trucking company in Phillipsburg, was recently admitted into the Guinness Book of World Records after winning the title at the age of 90 years and 55 days.

The previous record holder was 88 years and 3 days old.

Archer has been a leased driver for Coomes, a second and third-generation owned and operated trucking company, since 2004.

During the 16-week process of submitting his entry and qualifying for the Guinness recognition, Archer also received the "Million Mile Safe Driving" award presented by Coomes, Inc. and their insurance company for traveling a million miles without an accident.&nbsp; &nbsp;

He's been running big rigs for more than 60 years and takes pride in being a very good defensive driver.

"There's a lot of aggressive people out here on the roads," he said.&nbsp;

"I enjoy my job very much," Archer said. 

Despite the changes to his profession and challenges such as weather, traffic, shippers and receivers, he has no plans for retirement.

"As long as my health holds, I'll keep driving. I don't have the word retire in my vocabulary," Archer said.

Archer has hauled just about everything you can move in a truck,&nbsp;from livestock and grains, hazardous liquid materials such as chemicals and petroleum to grocery stock, huge paper rolls, and aircraft equipment.

The best part of his job, Archer said, is traveling the country.

"I've driven all 48 states in the continental U.S. and five provinces in Canada. I've got to meet a lot of people from many different parts of the world," he said.

He estimated he's driven about 5.5 million miles - so far - in his career.

"He's such a joy," said Karlie Wolever, a dispatcher for Coomes in Phillipsburg.

"Doyle has been a part of this industry for so long and has witnessed many changes.&nbsp; He never grumbles about any of it.&nbsp; 

"A lot of loads require tracking, which is done by downloading different apps on your smartphone and going through the steps," Wolever said. "At 90, he operates that like it is no big deal.&nbsp; He is a good texter, which I feel is very uncommon for someone his age.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"He just really is a delight and breath of fresh air. Ornery as they come, but as sweet as honey."

Wolever is the employee who talked to Doyle about his career, realizing he might be a record-holder, and helped gather all of the required verifying information to submit to Guinness. She was working on plans for Coomes' 60th-anniversary celebration next month when the idea came to her.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"It was an interesting process that we had to go through in order to get him submitted and approved," Wolever said.&nbsp;

The official plaque certifying the Guinness record arrived at the Coomes office Tuesday. Archer already has his certificate and bragging rights.

"It gives me great pride to have such an honor," he said.

Archer will also be featured in an upcoming article for the Owner Operator Independent Driver Association, said Wolever.

Archer intended to work on the family farm after graduating with an agriculture degree from&nbsp;Fort Hays State College in 1956 but had to leave due to severe asthma and other health problems. He became involved in the trucking industry in 1961 and started driving in 1964.

He's traveled cross-country numerous times and always sees something different, "but my favorite will always be the wheat fields of the High Plains in June and July."

After raising their family of nine children, his wife Lois, 86, whom he married in 1954, started riding along with Doyle occasionally.

Lois and Doyle also have 25 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

It's her homemade food that he attributes to his good health.

"I've always ate well. Lois has always fed me good food," he said.&nbsp;

He takes her home-cooked food on the road with him.

"I have a refrigerator and deep-freeze in my truck," he said.

"That's probably what kept me healthy for a long time," Doyle said.

Record-setting oldest male driver keeps on truckin' from Phillipsburg   

The Hays City Band will perform three concerts this summer on June 4, 11, and 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Dreiling Theatre at Thomas More Prep-Marian Jr./Sr. High School.

Concerts are free to attend and open to the public.

Musicians who would like to participate should attend rehearsals on May 28, 29, June 3, 10, and 17 from 7-9 p.m.  at TMP's Dreiling Theatre.

Hays City Band kicks off summer season in June; musicians invited to participate    

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) is launching Summer EBT, a new program to help eligible families offset some of the costs of buying food for their school-aged children over summer break. Summer EBT, also known as SUN Bucks in other states, is a partnership between DCF and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Service. The program provides families $120 for each eligible school-aged child to buy groceries.

“Summer is a time when many children lose the free and reduced-price meals they get at school and when households might need a little extra help putting meals on the table,” said DCF Secretary Laura Howard. “Summer EBT benefits can be used to buy food like fruits, vegetables, meat, whole grains, and dairy at grocery stores, farmers markets, and other places that accept SNAP EBT benefits.”

“Children and teens need healthy food year-round to play, grow, and learn. Summer EBT will help families stretch their grocery budget during the summer and provide their children with the nutrition they need to thrive,” Howard continued.

Summer EBT benefits will begin rolling out in mid to late July. For most families, Summer EBT will automatically be added to an existing household’s Kansas Benefits Card (also known as an EBT card) or loaded onto a Kansas Benefits Card and mailed to the home. SubmittedTOPEKA&nbsp;– The Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) is launching Summer EBT, a new program to help eligible families offset some of the costs of buying food for their school-aged children over summer break. Summer EBT, also known as SUN Bucks in other states, is a partnership between DCF and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Service. The program provides families $120 for each eligible school-aged child to buy groceries.“Summer is a time when many children lose the free and reduced-price meals they get at school and when households might need a little extra help putting meals on the table,” said DCF Secretary Laura Howard. “Summer EBT benefits can be used to buy food like fruits, vegetables, meat, whole grains, and dairy at grocery stores, farmers markets, and other places that accept SNAP EBT benefits.”“Children and teens need healthy food year-round to play, grow, and learn. Kansas launches summer EBT program to improve food access for kids during summer break

Sergeant David Vilaysing, founder of DXI Training Solutions LLC, announces the formation of a dedicated team to participate in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer's event in Hays on Sept. 21.

As part of their commitment to the cause, DXI Training Solutions will donate half of the profits from their upcoming Be Your Own Bodyguard (BYOB) courses to support the fight against Alzheimer's disease.

The BYOB courses, scheduled for June, July, and August, offer participants the opportunity to learn essential self-defense skills while contributing to a worthy cause. Taking place at Fit 159, 4820 Vine St., the intensive 1-day courses will equip attendees with practical techniques designed to enhance situational awareness and personal safety. It is self-defense designed with the same efficiency as a first-aid course. You will be safer in a day.

"We believe that everyone should have the ability to protect themselves and their loved ones," Vilaysing said. "Our Be Your Own Bodyguard program provides individuals with the necessary skills to stay safe in today's world."

Developed by Coach Tony Blauer, a leading figure in modern self-defense, the BYOB course leverages the SPEAR system, based on natural human biomechanics and the startle-flinch response. 

Participants will learn effective verbal de-escalation techniques and physical self-defense maneuvers, including strikes and tactics for managing fear.

The course curriculum covers key principles such as awareness and avoidance, fear management, and building a personal defense arsenal. Participants will engage in drills to enhance their understanding and retention of essential self-defense concepts.
