Western Kansas is running out of the water needed to fuel irrigated agriculture. Why is it so hard for farmers to switch to alternative crops?

GRAY COUNTY —&nbsp;In dry western Kansas, the sound of artificial rain spraying from center pivot irrigation sprinklers fills the spaces between the small towns.

Irrigation has turned this region into a productive agricultural powerhouse, churning out millions of bushels of grain.

Heath Koehn farms with his dad near Montezuma over the Ogallala aquifer that supplies farmers with irrigation and communities with drinking water. He knows that changes are coming to the way they farm.

“Changes are going to have to be made with that aquifer. It’s like adapt or die,” Koehn said.

A lot of farmers in the area feel the same way. The underground water supply that used to be plentiful is running dry fast. Some areas might only have a&nbsp;<a href="https://ksufoundation.org/impact/good-for-k-state/the-last-drop/" target="_blank">couple of decades</a>&nbsp;left at current pumping rates.

In order to maintain life in western Kansas, farmers are contemplating pivoting to crops that use less water.

Koehn decided for the first time to grow something he’s never grown before: canola. He grew this instead of wheat due to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ers.usda.gov/topics/crops/wheat/market-outlook" target="_blank">wheat prices being so low.&nbsp;</a>

“I've got some limited irrigation. I wanted to diversify and not just have all my eggs in one basket,” Koehn said.

That change might sound minor, but it’s a herculean task. The major systems that make up the complicated agriculture web are all built around irrigated commodity crops like corn, wheat and soybeans.

Growing anything else is rare because it comes with more risk and no guaranteed crop insurance or local buyers.

Koehn’s farm is an example of southwest Kansas farmers looking to the future and trying new crops to save water and prepare for western Kansas to become more parched.

The main problem lies within the crops that farmers grow. Traditional crops like corn and soybeans require a lot of water. The Kansas Geological Survey that monitors the underground water in the state estimates that 70% of the aquifer will be gone in 50 years.

Statewide, the amount of water pumped from underground and sprayed onto crops averages out to more than<a href="https://waterdata.usgs.gov/ks/nwis/water_use?format=html_table&amp;rdb_compression=file&amp;wu_area=State+Total&amp;wu_year=2015&amp;wu_category=IT&amp;wu_category_nms=Irrigation%252C%2BTotal" target="_blank">&nbsp;2 billion gallons per day</a>.

But Kansas State University has studied different crops that require less water and could be viable options in western Kansas.

Logan Simon, agronomist for K-State Research and Extension, said the western Kansas environment requires greater creativity from those in agriculture.

“All of the crops that we're looking at here are going to be providing some sort of benefit in the form of a reduction in the water required,” Simon said.

Earlier this year, Simon hosted alternative crop schools around western Kansas, offering information on what options farmers have. The standout choices are canola, cotton, camelina and cowpeas, which include&nbsp;<a href="https://www.loc.gov/everyday-mysteries/agriculture/item/are-black-eyed-peas-really-peas/" target="_blank">black-eyed peas</a>.

These crops not only require less water, but they can be harvested with equipment farmers already have and fit the same uses. Almost all commodities grown in western Kansas are for cattle feed or biofuels.

“The idea is not necessarily to replace all of these things, but provide alternatives to just build a more robust system,” Simon said.

A canola crushing plant opened last year in northwest Kansas giving a new market to farmers. The facility, operated by Omaha-based Scoular, is in Goodland.

Canola compared to a crop like corn needs about 40% less water.

Not only does this save dwindling water supplies but it diversifies how farmers make their money. Instead of just one industry like livestock feed, a farmer can sell their products to multiple industries. The crops can be used for human consumption, biofuels or making textiles.

The problem with alternative crops

Alternative crops sound like they can solve all the water problems on the frontier. But so far, farmers aren’t giving up their acres of corn and wheat for peas and canola.

That’s because farming at the end of the day is a business. Farmers need to plant what will turn a profit.

“Imagine that you just couldn't make a salary this year,” ag economist for Iowa State University Chad Hart said.

In the current agricultural system, commodity crops like corn and soybeans are the most economically efficient, despite their water inefficiencies. Farmers really don’t have much of a choice if they want to make money.

“You have to be willing to accept more risk to establish that alternative crop, because there aren't these built in mechanisms that we usually have,” Hart said.

The agriculture system is built to avoid risk. Crop insurance, government subsidies and bank loans are all built around corn and other traditional commodity crops, not the possible alternatives.

<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/news/stories/2023/05/agriculture-kansas-net-farm-income-2022.html" target="_blank">Southwest Kansas</a>&nbsp;is one of the most profitable regions in the state because of irrigated agriculture from the aquifer.

Corn profits can range to $160 per acre, while canola in a good year can hit&nbsp;<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/winter-canola-production-in-kansas-producer-experiences_MF3093.pdf" target="_blank">$150 per acre</a>.

But corn has a stable market and is heavily supported by crop insurance. With a crop like corn, a farmer in southwest Kansas might lose more water, but at least they can guarantee some income if there’s a drought or hailstorm. And they know that the local feedlots, grain elevators and ethanol plants will gladly buy their corn.

The same cannot be said for a cowpeas or canola.

“Just because you grow it doesn't mean you'll have customers,” Hart said. “Farmers have to spend more time thinking about how to market that crop.”

And local communities do not want to stop irrigating altogether. Irrigation brings in more money to farms, and to all the things the farm touches. The local grain elevators, the feedlots, the truck drivers and the meatpacking plants.

Congress first authorized&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rma.usda.gov/about-rma/history-rma#:~:text=Congress%20first%20authorized%20Federal%20crop,to%20carry%20out%20the%20program." target="_blank">federal crop insurance</a>&nbsp;in the 1930s to help agriculture recover from the Dust Bowl.

It started as a way to compensate farmers if a natural disaster struck and ruined their crop yields, which farmers still need today.

But it also makes it harder for farmers to practice water efficient farming. For example, if for whatever reason an irrigated crop fails, farmers aren’t allowed to stop irrigating the failed crop because they need to prove they weren’t at fault for the crop failure. These “<a href="https://www.rma.usda.gov/sites/default/files/topics/2024-14060-Good-Farming-Practice-Determination-Standards.pdf" target="_blank">Good farming practices</a>” are standards that guide crop insurance payments.

And crop insurance and subsidies are no small thing.

In 2025, government payments are projected&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ers.usda.gov/topics/farm-economy/farm-sector-income-finances/farm-sector-income-forecast" target="_blank">to make up 23%</a>&nbsp;of the total net farm income, a significant increase from 8-9% annually between 2022 and 2024.

According to Iowa State Research Extension, approximately 90% of acres growing corn and soybeans were insured using federal Revenue Protection programs.

Not only does this protect the farm's physical crops, but also all but guarantees a farmer will be paid even if the price for these commodities dip.

In 2024, the U.S. paid farmers over $2 billion to grow corn through the Emergency Commodity Assistance Program.

But farmers don’t want to only depend on crop insurance, they want to grow successful crops.

Alex Millershaski, a farmer in Gray County, has seen a massive change over the years when it comes to how much water his land can produce.

“We used to have twenty-something wells on the farm, and we're only pumping four now," Millershaski said.

Millershaski is still skeptical of growing alternative crops, but having less water available is making him consider trying something different.

He has seen some neighbors try canola and cotton. And he thinks next year he will give canola a try in place of his usual wheat crop.

Canola doubled in acres planted last year in Kansas to 3000. And while&nbsp;<a href="https://www.oklahomafarmreport.com/okfr/2025/02/18/ncc-survey-suggests-u-s-producers-to-plant-9-6-million-acres-of-cotton-in-2025/" target="_blank">cotton</a>&nbsp;is expected to see a decline across the U.S., Kansas is expected to see almost a 13% increase.

Processors in western Kansas, like 21st Century Bean, make cowpeas more viable. They buy and process wholesale beans for human consumption.

All those factors make Millershaski open to look at the options.

“Do you want to try something different? And it's sometimes just that simple,” Millershaski said.

‘Adapt or die’: Farmers in western Kansas consider alternative crops to save water

Madison Hanzlick has known for many years that she wanted to go into nursing, and this weekend she will see the culmination of her years of hard work and determination pay off when she receives her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from Fort Hays State University during the FHSU spring commencement event.

Originally from Hoisington, Hanzlick graduated from high school, moved to Hays, and began to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse in 2017. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2020, applied, was accepted, and began her doctorate program in June 2021. Along with her degrees, Hanzlick has completed the requisite programs, clinical hours, and passed exams for certifications, including Registered Nurse (RN) and Family Nurse Practitioner-Certified (FNP-C).

“I’ve always had a caring personality, and healthcare fit with who I was,” Hanzlick said. “When I was little, I thought I might want to be a pediatrician, but the path to nursing made more sense for me.”

After graduation, Hanzlick is looking forward to working for<a href="https://heartofkansas.com/"> Heart of Kansas Family Health</a>, a federally qualified health center. They are in the process of opening a new satellite campus in St. John, where she plans to work, which is not too far from her current residence in Hoisington. Previously, she worked in critical care and case management in both Hays and McPherson, but her time at Heart of Kansas while working on her clinicals was a deciding factor in what she chose to do next.

“I was able to do clinicals through there during school and enjoyed the patient population, the team, and the atmosphere, and it was a great fit,” Hanzlick said.

Coming from a smaller town and understanding the need for healthcare, particularly in rural western Kansas, Hanzlick was positive that she wanted to eventually practice in that type of setting. It is also one of the reasons she chose Fort Hays State, as the nursing program has an emphasis on rural care.

“I visited several schools with my parents while in high school, some larger than FHSU, and I preferred the smaller setting,” Hanzlick said. “Also, being able to visit with some of the faculty, I could already tell it was going to be comfortable, and a good fit.”

Hanzlick’s time both on campus during her undergraduate work and online while working on her doctorate made a distinct impression on the FHSU faculty. While she worked closely with many faculty members, Dr. Michelle Van Der Wege, associate professor of nursing and the DNP program coordinator, was one of the professors that Madison credits with helping her not only complete all her program requirements but also excel.

“I had the privilege of working with Madison both as an undergraduate nursing student and later as a DNP student, and it has been an honor to watch her grow--first as a registered nurse, and now into a nurse practitioner,” Van Der Wege said. “Madison is intelligent, compassionate, and deeply committed to helping others. Whether in the classroom with her peers or at the clinical site with patients, she is always looking to lend a hand.”

As with many transitions, graduation can be a little bittersweet, especially when facing the change from a familiar, comfortable present into an exciting, if potentially uncertain, future. Hanzlick is taking this change in stride, but already feels nostalgic for this time in her life.

“I love Fort Hays State, and not just the campus, I love the town, the hospital where I worked - I love the Hays community,” Hanzlick said. “When people ask, I tell how much I enjoyed FHSU and the nursing program – I’m always advocating for FHSU.”

While the feelings of loss and change are mutual, everyone looks forward to Hanzlick’s bright future.

“I am excited that [Madison] will be serving rural, western Kansas after graduation,” Van Der Wege said.&nbsp;“She is an outstanding example of how FHSU graduates positively impact rural health!”

While she worked closely with many faculty members, Dr. Michelle Van Der Wege, associate professor of nursing and the DNP program coordinator, was one of the professors that Madison credits with helping her not only complete all her program requirements but also excel.“I had the privilege of working with Madison both as an undergraduate nursing student and later as a DNP student, and it has been an honor to watch her grow--first as a registered nurse, and now into a nurse practitioner,” Van Der Wege said. “Madison is intelligent, compassionate, and deeply committed to helping others. Whether in the classroom with her peers or at the clinical site with patients, she is always looking to lend a hand.”As with many transitions, graduation can be a little bittersweet, especially when facing the change from a familiar, comfortable present into an exciting, if potentially uncertain, future. Hanzlick is taking this change in stride, but already feels nostalgic for this time in her life.“I love Fort Hays State, and not just the campus, I love the town, the hospital where I worked - I love the Hays community,” Hanzlick said. “When people ask, I tell how much I enjoyed FHSU and the nursing program – I’m always advocating for FHSU.”While the feelings of loss and change are mutual, everyone looks forward to Hanzlick’s bright future.“I am excited that [Madison] will be serving rural, western Kansas after graduation,” Van Der Wege said.&nbsp;“She is an outstanding example of how FHSU graduates positively impact rural health!”

New FHSU Hoisington graduate focuses on rural Kansas health care     

The annual Spring Convocation at Fort Hays State University was held May 9. President Tisa Mason and Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Jill Arensdorf, recognized the winners of the Spring Semester 2025 faculty and staff awards.

The Navigator Award was presented to Falynn Rogers from the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences. The award was established in 1998 by the Student Government Association to recognize an outstanding academic advisor based on how closely the advisor adheres to the university's goals for academic advising.&nbsp;

Rogers exemplifies the spirit of the Navigator Advising Award through her dedication, communication, and support for her students.

“Falynn goes above and beyond to ensure students understand their educational requirements, feel confident in their goals, and are equipped with the resources they need to succeed,” Arensdorf said.

The Outstanding Graduate Advisor Award recognizes a faculty member who is an advisor of graduate students and provides leadership and service in other activities on campus. The award was presented to Dr. Blake Roth from the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Roth was selected for the award because of his exceptional mentorship and dedication to student success. Multiple students submitted detailed nominations highlighting his consistent support, clear guidance, and commitment to helping them achieve their academic and professional goals.

Cross-Border Educational Excellence Award:

The Cross-Border Education Excellence Award was given to Christopher Adams, Instructor of Leadership in the School of Criminal Justice, Leadership and Sociology. The award was established to recognize an individual who exemplifies excellence in contributing to FHSU students’ academic experiences at a cross-border partner institution.

Adams, who teaches at Shenyang Normal University in China, has significantly impacted his program through his expertise in Chinese education and curriculum development.

Edmund Shearer Faculty Advisor of the Year Award:

The Edmund Shearer Faculty Advisor of the Year Award was presented to Christina Mergen, Academic Advisor in the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences.

The Edmund Shearer Award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding academic advising of students.&nbsp;Shearer, a former Chair of the Department of Chemistry, was known for the high value he placed on student advisement. One advisor can be recognized from each of the five academic colleges.&nbsp;

Mergen has shown dedication, organization, and leadership values that have impacted FHSU student success.

“She provides personalized, proactive support to students, guiding them through complex academic paths with clarity and care,” Arensdorf said.

With Mergen, fellow nominees for this award included: Debra Staab, Academic Advisor from the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; and Kristin Hernandez, Academic Advisor from the College of Education.

Spring Outstanding Faculty Award winners:

Dr. Kenton Olliff, Associate Professor of Advanced Education, received the Outstanding Teaching Award.

Dr. Ran An,&nbsp;Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, received the Outstanding Scholarly Activity Award.

Dr. Jennifer Bechard, Assistant Professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance, was selected for the Service Award.

All recipients received a $500 award for their accomplishments, thanks to the generosity and support of Commerce Bank. In addition to the monetary gift, the college deans are providing an additional $250 in the budget of the recipient's department.

Olliff was recognized for integrating clinical expertise, especially in substance abuse counseling, into a student-centered and practice-informed curriculum.

“Kenton’s compassionate, experience-driven approach prepares students for both academic and professional success,” Arensdorf said.

An was recognized for her exceptional research productivity, numerous national and international conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications, and successful grant awards.

“Her work addresses timely, practical issues in speech-language pathology, including culturally responsive assessments and services for underserved communities,” Arensdorf said.

Bechard was recognized with the Outstanding Service Award for her leadership and service at FHSU and beyond.

“Jennifer’s extensive service, including mentoring students and guiding departmental improvements, has significantly impacted both the university and the broader community,” Arensdorf said.

The honorees will join three other faculty members recognized for teaching, research, and scholarly activity in the Fall 2024 semester, as candidates for the Faculty Member-of-the-Year Award. The recipient of the upcoming award, along with a $1,000 prize, will be announced at the Fall Convocation in August.

These six faculty members (spring and fall) are eligible for the award and selected by the Academic Council.

Awards presentations highlight spring semester convocation at FHSU

FHSU’s Department of Economics, Finance, and Accounting recently announced its Student of the Year Awards for the 2024-2025 academic year for each major in the department: accounting, finance, and international business and economics.

Students graduating in the 2024-2025 academic year were eligible to receive this award, with the faculty from each discipline selecting the award recipients.

The 2024-2025 Accounting Student of the Year Award recipient is Megan Jones, Olathe. Megan will graduate with her B.B.A. degree with majors in accounting and finance this week. She graduated from Olathe South High School. Megan has accepted a position as an accounting analyst with Koch in Wichita following graduation.

The 2024-2025 Finance Student of the Year Award recipient is Jessica Saunders, Lehigh. Jessica will graduate with her B.B.A. degree with majors in accounting and finance this week. She graduated from Hillsboro High School. Jessica has accepted a position as an associate with AGH CPAs &amp; Advisors in Wichita following graduation.

The 2024-2025 International Business and Economics Award recipient is Gabriela Vega, San Diego, Calif. Gabriela will graduate with her B.B.A. degree in international business and economics this week. She received her Associate of Science Degree from San Diego Mesa College with honors. She is a management analyst working for the Department of Veterans Affairs in San Diego.

FHSU Department of Economics, Finance, Accounting announces Student of the Year awards 

Gus Peine, Hays, and Bryce Steffan, Ellinwood, high school students enrolled in the <a href="https://www.fhsu.edu/kams/">Kansas Academy of Math and Science</a> at Fort Hays State University, lobbied Kansas congressional members and testified before the House Education Committee to pass <a href="https://kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/sb114/">Senate Bill 114</a>.

It allows all KAMS students to fully participate in all KSHSAA activities (music, sports, debate, Scholars Bowl, etc.).

 The bill was signed by Governor Laura Kelly on April 7. 

A special thanks to Senator Tory Marie Blew, Great Bend, and Representatives Sherri Brantley, Great Bend and Barb Wasinger, Hays.

The city of Hays plans to issue a public survey to find out whether residents support allowing backyard chickens.

City commissioners discussed a proposed plan Thursday that would allow up to five chickens — but no roosters — in fenced rear or side yards. The hens would have to be kept in a coop, run or other confined structure at all times.&nbsp;

No registration or permitting of the animals would be required, enclosures would be subject to Planning and Development regulations, a home or business must also be located on the lot, and Hays Police community service officers would be in charge of ordinance enforcement.

"It's very simple and straight forward," Collin Bielser, deputy city manager, said of the proposed policy.&nbsp;

The request came from Hays resident&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/2e7d82b6-c371-400e-9093-77c1f565fec0">Tina Sarver, who addressed the commission on March 27</a>&nbsp;about changing the city’s ordinance to allow backyard&nbsp;chickens. She provided research from several other towns, including Plainville.

Other Kansas towns that allow chickens include&nbsp;WaKeeney, Goodland, Salina, Overland Park, Prairie Village, El Dorado and Pratt.

Commissioners had mixed reactions to the proposed ordinance change.&nbsp;

Shaun Musil, who said he grew up raising chickens, opposed the idea.

"I wouldn't want to live next to somebody who wasn't taking care of them properly," he said, "although I think most people would take care of them."

Hays resident Aaron Dreher told the commission he was also against the proposal. 

"If you've ever smelled their coop after your neighbor being on vacation for five days, you're gonna change your mind real fast," he said. "I only see problems with it. There's no pros with it." 

Dreher also said, "If families want to educate their children about chickens, take them to the Sternberg Museum or a farm. ... If you want eggs, buy them at the grocery store."

Commissioner Alaina Cunningham said she had been contacted by Jay Harris, Cottonwood Extension District director, who told her if the ordinance passed, the local office would put together educational materials on how to properly raise chickens and dispose of their waste in an urban setting.

Glenn Cox, Hays resident, spoke in favor of the proposal.

"The odor, I believe, can be controlled. It's only five chickens, and you could always have less," Cox said.

Bielser also noted the possibility of increased predators and agitation of neighboring dogs and cats.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Mayor Sandy Jacobs suggested a simple yes/no poll be created on the city's website to get more public input. The commission plans to vote on the proposal at its June 5 meeting.

The city staff will be releasing an online poll on the issue. Watch the Hays Post for a link when it becomes available.

Airport to temporarily close to flights for runway repair

Airport Director Jamie Salter presented a recommended low bid award for reconstructing the crosswind runway in 2026. It was built in 2003 and is showing signs of extension deterioration.

The low bid came from Smoky Hill, LLC of Salina for $6.67 million. The project is eligible for 95% funding through the Federal Aviation Administration. The city's share would be $333,809.&nbsp;

Runway 4-22 will be closed for the duration of the construction, scheduled for 143 calendar days. The start date will be sometime next spring and conclude in the fall.

The main 16-34 runway will also be closed for about three weeks during that time, which means no airplane flights will be able to arrive or depart the Hays Regional Airport. Helicopter traffic would still be allowed by arrangement.

Commissioners expressed concern the main runway closure.

"All I ask is that we notify the public as soon as we can because there are lots of people who plan their airline travel far in advance," Jacobs said.

A construction engineering services agreement with Lochner, Lenexa, was presented for $445,800. The FAA will pay 95% of the cost, with the city's share at $22,290.

Both items will move on for a vote at the May 22 city commission meeting.&nbsp;

Commissioners also heard from Jess Rohr, public works director, for a rezoning request, final plat and annexation of Covenant Estates 1st Addition in northwest Hays. 

The 20 acres is located&nbsp;on the&nbsp;south end of the field west of Thunderbird between 33rd and 41st streets. It is adjacent to residential property along Thunderbird Drive and&nbsp;Oakmont Street.&nbsp;

Covenant Land &amp; Developing Inc. has requested the rezoning from agriculture to residential general and to be annexed into the city.

The final plat of Phase 1 includes three city blocks with 54 lots.&nbsp;

Rohr said the owner plans to develop the remaining 55 acres of property north of Phase 1 during the next few years.&nbsp;

The Hays Planning Commission has approved all the requests.

It is adjacent to residential property along Thunderbird Drive and&nbsp;Oakmont Street.&nbsp;Covenant Land &amp; Developing Inc. has requested the rezoning from agriculture to residential general and to be annexed into the city.The final plat of Phase 1 includes three city blocks with 54 lots.&nbsp;Rohr said the owner plans to develop the remaining 55 acres of property north of Phase 1 during the next few years.&nbsp;The Hays Planning Commission has approved all the requests.

Fort Hays State University's Forsyth Library recently announced that Kelsie Winter, a senior double majoring in criminal justice and biology, is the 2025 recipient of the Lynn Haggard Undergraduate Library Research Award (LHULRA).

The LHULRA is awarded annually in honor of Lynn Haggard, a retired Forsyth librarian who served at Forsyth for 18 years. Applicants must demonstrate sophisticated literacy skills and excellence in undergraduate research that incorporates the use of Forsyth Library resources. 

Winter’s submission highlighted her project, “Investigating Case Attrition Rates for Sexual Assault in Kansas,” which was completed for her CRJ 670 class.&nbsp;This project is also part of a larger research study on sexual assault attrition rates in urban and rural counties across the state, supported by the Undergraduate Research Experience (URE) at FHSU in collaboration with faculty mentor Wendy Rohleder-Sook and student researcher Grace McCord.

Winter’s academic interests include criminal justice and biology, with a focus on the field of forensics.

“I especially love being in the laboratory, gaining hands-on experience, and learning about human anatomy,” Winter said. “I also enjoy researching topics such as forensic evidence, and I have completed research projects such as papers, presentations, and a SACAD poster on this topic.”

Improving the fields of criminal justice and biology through studies of how each discipline influences the other is at the heart of much of Winter’s research.

“Kelsie’s work contributes meaningfully to understanding the systemic and procedural barriers that impact sexual assault case progression,” said Dr. Ziwei Qi, CRJ 670 professor. “And it does so with clarity, compassion, and scholarly integrity.”

Qi pointed out that Winter’s research reflects the qualities that the Lynn Haggard Award seeks to recognize - “intellectual depth, innovative use of library resources, and a meaningful contribution to academic discourse.”

The Lynn Haggard Undergraduate Library Research Award recognizes excellence in undergraduate research that incorporates the use of Forsyth Library resources and demonstrates sophisticated information literacy skills.

Forsyth Library Online Learning Librarian Heather VanDyne said that information literacy is necessary for students to evaluate and use information.

“Library resources not only help students expand their knowledge to assist them in finishing an assignment or passing a course but also help prepare them for their future by building skills and strategies to navigate the world around them,” she said.

The Hays Recreation Commission’s 14th annual Dash 4 Disabilities is right around the corner.

The fun run is scheduled for Saturday, June 7 at 8:00 a.m. on the west side of the Hays Aquatic Park (4th and Main). Registration will begin at 7:15 a.m. This run will consist of your choice of a 1 mile run/walk or a 5K run/walk.

There is still time to register for this fun event for an entry fee of only $10 on or before June 4. Cost after June 5 is $12.

The run is for people of all abilities, will not be timed, and the proceeds will go to help support the programs coordinated by the Hays Recreation Commission that support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The run helps make the programs free or inexpensive for participants.

Entries open for Dash for Disabilities on June 7

Over the last several weeks, symptoms of wheat streak mosaic virus have been showing up in wheat fields across Kansas, including the Cottonwood District. 

This disease complex can be caused by several viruses, including wheat streak mosaic virus, Triticum mosaic virus, and wheat mosaic virus (high plains). These viruses are vectored by the wheat curl mite, a near-microscopic mite that survives between seasons on volunteer wheat and other grassy hosts. These grassy hosts serve as a “green bridge” for mites to survive from one wheat crop to the next. Infections may occur in the fall or spring, but fall infections typically result in the highest levels of yield loss. 

Although wheat streak mosaic infections can happen at any time, symptoms develop most rapidly at temperatures above 70°F. Symptoms have become more severe in Kansas over the last several weeks as temperatures have warmed.

Will a fungicide help with my wheat streak infection?

No. There is no evidence that a fungicide application will do anything to stop the progression of wheat streak mosaic complex or preserve yield in infected fields. Fungicides are specifically formulated to kill diseases caused by fungi (leaf &amp; stripe rust, leaf spots, head scab, etc.) but have no activity against viral diseases like wheat streak mosaic. 

In addition, fields that have moderate to severe wheat streak mosaic infections will often have reduced yield potential that will diminish the economic return from a fungicide applied to control one of those other diseases (rust, leaf spots, or head scab).

Why is the wheat streak complex so severe and widely distributed this season?

Although we are still trying to understand the extent of the damage across the state, says Kelsey Anderson Onofre, Extension Wheat Pathologist, there are a few factors that came together this season that may have contributed to the outbreak.

Wheat streak complex can be more severe in years where summer moisture that favors volunteer wheat establishment is followed by a warm fall that favors mite reproduction. In 2024, although August was relatively dry, precipitation in July and September would have supported late volunteer wheat emergence. Wheat curl mite populations prefer warm, dry weather and reproduce at high rates between 75-85°F. These mites only survive short periods (8-10 days) when conditions are warm, but during that time, they can lay up to 20 eggs. This rapid population growth can lead to a 25% increase in population size over the course of just two weeks. 

In 2024, Kansas experienced a very warm fall with higher-than-normal temperatures from September through November. These conditions may have sustained periods of time that were highly favorable for mite reproduction and movement across fields.

Is there anything I can do this season to help slow down the progression of the disease?

No. Efforts to control wheat curl mites with foliar miticides and/or insecticidal seed treatments have never proven effective and have not been shown to reduce the spread or severity of the viruses.

What can we do to prepare for the 2025 planting season?

The most critical way to prevent wheat streak complex infection is to control volunteer wheat after harvest and continue to control any secondary flushes of volunteer prior to planting. 

We also need to watch for hidden volunteer wheat in summer crops and cover crops. Although curl mites prefer wheat, they can also survive the summer on other grass species. Avoid planting wheat early to reduce the length of time mites have to increase their numbers and transmit disease.
