Donations being accepted now for Hays coat drive

St. Joseph Food Pantry has received a one-time fresh produce drop and will hold a special drive-through distribution for families in need on Thursday. 

This car-side service will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. or until supplies run out in the St. Joseph school parking lot near the Food Pantry doors. 

Each box includes white potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, acorn squash and grapes.

RUSSELL — Scared Silly will be sure to get you in the mood for Halloween. RCT’s 103rd production is a compilation of short plays dealing with the spooky and supernatural in a most comedic way.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Randyll Mauro is making her directorial debut with this production. Seven short plays have been selected from Scared Silly and RCT is sure this will be an audience favorite! The following individuals have been cast for various roles: Kiefer Craig, Nikki Kuntzsch, Debora Kreutzer, Teressa Roe, Todd Chance, Monica Harrison, Nakota Allen, Dalton Mauro, Brandon Fitzgerald, Sheila Lamb, Olivia Schreiner and Liberty Kuntzsch.&nbsp;

It’s You by Ian McWethy-The Brillmore Strangler is on the loose--and as a slasher-movie junkie, Lois couldn't be more excited. Her friends are less thrilled, especially when they hear she's tracked the killer to the very room they're in. As the bodies pile up, accusing the right guy (or girl!) proves harder than it looks in this loving send-up of slasher-movie mayhem.&nbsp;

The True Meaning of Halloween by Don Zolidis-On Halloween night, a couple opens their door to a find true monster: a teenager without a costume who demands candy anyway. The (Completely Inaccurate) Legend of the Mummy Witch House by Hillary DePiano-Three urban explorers venture into a haunted house to find proof of a legend, but when they come face-to-face with the creepy place's real residents, they're not quite what the trio expected. Turns out, sometimes truth is stranger than fiction--and way more fun.&nbsp;

Forever Friends by Becca Schlossberg-Ash is devoted to her stuffed animals, even though she's thirteen and people give her a hard time. Turns out someone else knows exactly how she feels--who happens to be a terrifying ghost who lives in her closet. A whimsical tale of friendship between the human, ghostly, and stuffed.&nbsp;

Attack of the Cafeteria Zombies by Ed Monk-Earth faces a peril unlike anything humanity has ever seen, and it looks like cafeteria corn dogs. When the principal and a school bully start acting strangely, a group of students discover that aliens are testing a mind control device on their school lunch. But the invaders have one weakness . . . and you can collect them all!&nbsp;

Performances will run October 18-22, 2022, at the RCT Playhouse (5th and Kansas, Russell). Show time is 8:00 pm. Admission is $12 or by season ticket. Scared Silly is presented by special arrangement with Playscripts, Inc.&nbsp; &nbsp; Russell Community Theater is a nonprofit theater company in Russell, Kansas. The family of a longtime Hays businessman is having a celebration of life for him on Thursday.

Friends and acquaintances of <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/991fa8c0-ac00-4848-be67-c30aa7e024a8">Russ Clark</a> are invited to attend a casual reception from 9 a.m. to noon at the Strand, 1102 Main.

Clark's family decided the Strand was a fitting location because he opened The Village Shop in that location with Don Volker in 1963.

Clark worked at his business for 27 years before retiring in 1990.

He died in December of 2020 at the age of 96 years. <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/991fa8c0-ac00-4848-be67-c30aa7e024a8">Because that was in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, his family decided to wait until a later time for people to gather safely in his honor.</a>

Parents of autistic children are invited to attend a new free support group offered by the Center for Life Experience, 103C E. 27th.

Titled “It’s Good to Talk—Neurodivergent,” the group will meet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. the fourth Wednesday of every month, beginning Oct. 26. Free on-site childcare will be available to those who RSVP by Wednesday, Oct. 5, to the center at (785) 259-6859 or&nbsp;<a href="mailto:info@cflehope.org">info@cflehope.org</a>.

Darian Schulte, the center’s executive director, said in an email, “Parents coping with autism face many obstacles, whether that’s developing parenting strategies, learning better ways to communicate, or advocating for their child.

PHILLIPS COUNTY — The Phillips County Economic Development Board voted to increase funding for commercial properties as well as residential through the Demolition Assistance Program.

The program is now able to assist you with the removal of commercial buildings that are no longer of service to the community and cannot be rehabilitated.

Hays City Commission work session canceled this week

The Victoria Community Coalition will&nbsp;host a&nbsp;community
meeting&nbsp;Wednesday, October 5th, 6:00 pm&nbsp;at the VFW.&nbsp;

This
gathering is open to the public and will include an update on the redevelopment
of the former St. John's Rest Home building.

Presentations will include a
summary of the community housing assessment conducted this past summer, the
architect's initial plans and estimated construction costs, and where we plan
to go from here.

Victoria Community Coalition meeting scheduled for Oct. 5

Purple Light Nights October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Options Domestic &amp; Sexual Violence Services is bringing awareness to our communities through several awareness and educational events.

Options invites community members to take action, prevent domestic violence, and support survivors. Options is excited to be hosting three tree lighting ceremonies this year to kick off Domestic Violence Awareness Month. These tree lightings will be across Options’ 18-county service area:

· Monday, Oct. 3 in Hill City at East City Park at 7 p.m. · Tuesday, Oct. 4 in Hays at Union Pacific Park at 7 p.m. · Wednesday, Oct. 5 in Colby at Fike Park at 7 p.m.

Options invites the community to show their support for survivors at these ceremonies.

Turn the Lights SalON! is returning this year to Options’ Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This is a competition between area salons to decorate their windows for the month of October.

Salons will have the opportunity to participate in a special training for the CUT IT OUT program. CUT IT OUT builds awareness of domestic abuse through materials displayed in salons through the “Give the Power Back” initiative. Options is offering several free training opportunities throughout the month for any salon/spa professional or student, which gives them tools they need to recognize warning signs and safely refer clients to resources.

In Her Shoes In Her Shoes is an interactive activity where participants can walk through a simulation of a survivor’s journey through an abusive relationship.

Options is hosting In Her Shoes at the libraries in Hays, Hill City, Colby, and Atwood. This event is designed to give participants a direct view of the triumphs and struggles that many survivors face while experiencing abuse and recovering from it. Options will host four In Her Shoes events throughout the month:

· Tuesday, Oct. 11 in Hays at the Hays Public Library from 5 to 8 p.m. · Monday, Oct. 17 in Hill City at the Graham County Library from 2 to 5 p.m. · Thursday, Oct. 20 in Atwood at the Atwood Public Library from 5 to 7:30 p.m. · Friday, Oct. 28 in Colby at the Pioneer Memorial Library from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

These events contain sensitive and potentially graphic content; descriptions of domestic and sexual abuse, rape, and personal trauma are included. Discretion is advised.

Paint the Town Purple Paint the Town Purple is an art therapy painting event to encourage community members to express themselves and their experiences.

Options and Fort Hays State University Student Groups Arts for Social Change and the Criminal Justice Club will host a come-and-go event at Union Pacific Park in Downtown Hays from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16. 

All supplies will be provided. The finished pieces will be combined into a larger work that will be on display at Fort Hays State University.

Options will host a second Paint the Town Purple event on campus at Colby Community College from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21.

Options sets events for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Kansas Special Olympics is looking for 32 volunteers to help me with the Special Olympics Kansas West Region Bowling Tournament that will be on Oct. 22 at Centennial Lanes in Hays.

This will be the first West Region Bowling Tournament since 2019 and it will be the first time the tournament has been hosted in Hays.

The Dorrance American Legion, 513 Main Street, Dorrance, will host a steak feed Saturday, Oct. 8.

Social hour is at 5:30 p.m. with the meal at 6:30 p.m.

Menu includes 12 or 6 ounce ribeye steak with baked potato, corn, green beans, tea or water, and a big selection of desserts.&nbsp;

Ice-cold beer and mixed drinks will be available.

Proceeds benefit the Dorrance American Legion.&nbsp;

The closure of Pine Street just south of 6th Street in Hays originally planned for today is being postponed until Monday, October 10th.

On Monday, October 10th, Pine Street will be closed to through traffic just south of 6th Street for waterline work. 6th Street will remain open, and Pine Street should be back open to traffic by the end of that day.
