GREAT BEND -&nbsp; The Kansas Wetlands Education Center (KWEC),&nbsp;located northeast of Great Bend on K-156 Highway, is gearing up for its annual “Out of this World” Perseid Meteor Shower Watch Party.

The public is invited to join the KWEC staff for this free, family-friendly activity. Each year, as the Earth passes through the dust and debris of the Swift-Tuttle comet, the Kansas Wetlands Education Center celebrates the end of summer with our guests by watching the meteors or shooting stars as they burn in our atmosphere.

This event coincides with the anticipated peak in meteor shower activity for the month on Aug. 12, from 8:30-10:30 p.m. Stargazers may be able to spot from 60-100 meteors per hour during this time. While we anticipate some potential light pollution from the last Supermoon (a full moon that occurs when the moon is closest to the Earth) of the calendar year that will peak the night before, the show will go on regardless of the conditions.

Guests at the meteor show watch party can also take advantage of an opportunity to learn about the science behind the remarkable images recently delivered by the James Webb Space Telescope.

The Webb telescope is the successor of the Hubbell Space Telescope. It uses giant mirrors to create infrared images. Those in attendance can learn how this infrared energy works through a hands-on experiment. Event participants will also be able to walk through a massive star's life cycle while creating a take-home reminder of the process.

Other hands-on activities include creating a spiral galaxy with a spin and paint machine, building&nbsp;a solar-powered moon base welcome sign, enjoying a view of the night sky, and listening to stories about the constellations in an inflatable planetarium. 

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets and munch on s’mores as they scan the night skies.

Wetlands Education Center schedules meteor shower watch party

LAWRENCE — The names of more than 6,600 graduates at the University 
of Kansas for summer and fall 2021 and spring 2022 have been announced 
by the University Registrar. Many graduates and candidates for degree 
celebrated by participating in KU Commencement, which took place May 15.

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued several public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae.&nbsp;

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. If you, or your dog, come into contact with algae rinse the area with clean, fresh water.

Norton Lake under KDHE public health advisory for algae

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly has announced that applications are open for the next Poet Laureate of Kansas. The Poet Laureate of Kansas is an honorary position designed to promote the reading and writing of poetry throughout the state and is sponsored through the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission (KCAIC). The current Kansas Poet Laureate is Huascar Medina, a poet, writer, and performer based in Topeka.&nbsp;

“By preserving the legacy of the generations that came before us, inspiring artists of the future, and driving community and economic development, the Kansas Poet Laureate program is a shining example of the value of supporting local and statewide arts,”&nbsp;said Governor Kelly. “I encourage poets across the state to apply to be the eighth Poet Laureate of Kansas.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Kansas Poet Laureate will serve a term of four years beginning January 1, 2023, and will contribute to the growth and awareness of poetry by presenting their own work and the work of others at public events, readings, workshops, and lectures throughout the state.&nbsp;

“The arts help bring our communities together with stories and experiences that highlight our uniqueness, talents and gifts,”&nbsp;said Lieutenant Governor David Toland. “It has been great to see the return of the Poet Laureate program through the talents of current Poet Laureate Huascar Medina and I’m excited to see this program continue to grow.”&nbsp;

HOXIE- The City of Hoxie is asking that all residents please keep your property mowed and trimmed and weeds sprayed.  

Pursuant to Ordinance 659 it shall be unlawful for any owner, agent, lessee, tenant, or other person occupying or having charge or control of any premises to permit weeds to remain upon said premises or any area between the property lines of said premises and the center line of any adjacent street or alley, including but not specifically limited to sidewalks, streets, alleys, easements, right-of-ways and all other areas, public or private.  

The City will be sending out letters advising that the owner. occupant or agent in charge of the property will be assessed a fine of $25.00 per day for a maximum of $250.00 if the owner does not comply with the notice.

Divine Mercy Radio is gearing up for their&nbsp;12th&nbsp;annual Appreciation Banquet to be held in Hays on Sept. 10 and in Salina on Sept. 11. The guest speaker is Father Wade L. J. Menezes, CPM,&nbsp;of the Fathers of Mercy, based out of Auburn, Ken.​

​The banquet in Hays will begin with a social hour at 6 p.m., followed by a meal and program. It will be held at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall, 2350 E. Eighth.

​In Salina, the banquet will also begin with a social hour, but at 5 p.m., followed by a meal and program. It will be held in the Hall of Bishops at Sacred Heart Cathedral,&nbsp;118 N. Ninth.

Two Union Pacific Railroad crossings on U.S. 83 and K-25 will temporarily close for repairs this week.

The first closure will occur Aug. 2 and 3 on the crossing located on U.S. 83 near Oakley. Upon completion of those repairs, Union Pacific will close the crossing located on K-25 between U.S. 40 and I-70 Aug. 4 and 5. The Kansas Department of Transportation will close U.S. 83 and K-25 in both directions at the crossings while the repairs are being completed.

Through traffic will be detoured on I-70 and U.S. 40. Union Pacific and their traffic control subcontractor will oversee the crossing repairs and detour signing.

Businesses and organizations in northwest Kansas can now apply for a spring or summer 2023 intern from Fort Hays State University through the FHSU/Dane G. Hansen Internship program.

A Dane G. Hansen Foundation grant made 25 paid internships possible for next spring and summer. Applications from employers will be accepted through Sept. 16.

Eligible employers must be located in the Hansen Foundation’s 26-county service area: the block of counties stretching from the Cheyenne-Wallace County area east to include the Republic-Saline County area, including Ellsworth County. However, students do not have to be from the northwest Kansas area to apply.

A participating employer invests $500 toward the student intern’s wages, and the Hansen Foundation grant provides the remaining funding. Each internship is for one semester or summer. Spring interns will work 240 hours, and summer interns will work 300 hours.

“We’re grateful for the Dane G. Hansen Foundation’s continued support of this program,” said Lisa Karlin, internship career advisor. “It provides employers access to new talent and allows students to gain professional work experience through internships.”

Interested employers should go to the Career Services page on the FHSU website at <a href="https://www.fhsu.edu/career/employers/hansen-internship-program">fhsu.edu/career/employers/hansen-internship-program</a> to learn more about the program and complete the application. The employer must also provide a detailed job description for the internship.

The Hays Salvation Army has fans to give away thanks to a donation from Westlake Ace Hardware in Hays and their customers.

During the month of June, Ace offered a purchase round-up to help raise money to buy fans for the Salvation Army.

Ace was able to purchase 48 fans with the proceeds from the fundraiser. 

In addition, two local boys saved their money to purchase two fans to donate to the project.

The fans are for low-income families and individuals in Ellis County. You can receive one of the box fans every three years.

If you are in need of a fan, contact Julie Smith at the Salvation Army at 785-621-2794 to set an appointment. Please leave a message if Smith does not answer. She is available Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

"Sometimes moving air keeps you cool if you just get that breeze," she said.
