KANSAS CITY — The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks is proud to announce the application period for the state’s all-new lifetime hunting and fishing license for kids will begin October 14, 2022. 

Any resident youth who is 7 years old or younger at the time of application will be eligible to have a Kansas lifetime hunting and fishing license purchased on their behalf at a reduced rate: $302.50 for those 5 and younger, and $502.50 for those 6 or 7 years old. Applications open for Kansas kids' lifetime hunting, fishing license

HaysMed’s annual drive-through flu shot clinic will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16. The event will offer free flu shots for all residents older than 6 months.&nbsp; &nbsp;

For the safety of the public and those working the flu drive, masks are encouraged for all people ages 2 years and up.&nbsp; In addition, physical distancing will be observed at all locations on campus.

It will be the 23rd year the hospital has offered the community service, and approximately 3,500 people are expected to be vaccinated during the free clinic.

People age 10 and up can receive their free flu shot without leaving their vehicles. HaysMed volunteers will direct traffic during the event.&nbsp; If you want to fill out the forms and bring them with you, go to&nbsp;<a href="https://haysmedfoundation.org/flu">haysmedfoundation.org/flu</a>&nbsp;and make copies to complete.

Children 6 months through 9 years of age will be vaccinated on the west side of the Center for Health Improvement.&nbsp; Adults attending with children can also receive their shots in the same location.

High-dose flu vaccine will not be available for 65 and over.&nbsp; The CDC has not expressed a preference for any flu vaccine indicated for people 65 years and older. It's most important for everyone to get the annual seasonal flu vaccine, whether it's a standard-dose or high-dose flu vaccine.

More than 100 volunteers will be on hand to help with the event. HaysMed partners with Fort Hays State University and NCK Tech as both facilities provide students to help with the shots.

There will be no nasal flu vaccine at the drive-through flu shot clinic.&nbsp; There will be no egg-free vaccines available at the drive-through flu shot clinic. People with a severe egg allergy will need to contact their local healthcare provider for their flu vaccine.&nbsp;

Featured for the Halloween Concert this year are selections from Disney favorites such as&nbsp;Aladdin, Pirates of the Caribbean, Frozen, The Incredibles, Toy Story, Up, Cars, Ratatouille, and more. From newer hits to classic Disney tunes, the medley style mashup will sure to bring delight to concert-goers of all ages.&nbsp;

Parents are encouraged to bring their children in costume to participate in a series of hands-on music activities starting at 1:30 p.m. All pre-concert activities will begin in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center lobby.&nbsp;

Children dressed in the Halloween spirit are invited to join in the Costume Parade where they will march behind brass players leading the parade. Hays Public Library staff will lead a Musical Story Hour. FHSU’s National Association for Music Education students will assist children in Disney themed arts and crafts.&nbsp;

PUBLIC NOTICE: Ellis County 2022 general election 

TOPEKA - The KANSASWORKS Virtual Job Fair, will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 19. The virtual fair will focus on all state agency job openings.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The state’s 98 government agencies have approximately 900 full-time, part-time, and internship opportunities available across the state. Kansas has conducted 17 virtual job fairs since the beginning of 2020, showcasing jobs from hundreds of employers across the state. More than 1,500 people have participated in the state’s job fair events this year.&nbsp;

The online job fairs allow those looking for work to fill out applications, chat live and interview virtually with participating agencies.

The Robert E. And Patricia Schmidt Foundation recently donated $25,000 to the American Red Cross to help support recovery efforts following Hurricane Ian.

The Red Cross has dispatched multiple vehicles, which will most likely be deployed for weeks, and the foundation's gift will help support the volunteers manning the vehicles and help restock supplies.

"Our hearts go out to those effected by this devastating storm," said Schmidt Foundation Chairman Gary Shorman, "and we offer our sincere thanks to the Red Cross for offering much-needed assistance during this recovery.

"The mission of the Red Cross is an admirable one, and we'd urge our communities to do what they can to help by donating."

Veterans will be honored at Buckeye Wind Energy Center

GOODLAND — Northwest Tech Engineering Students once again are preparing for the annual haunted house.&nbsp; The students plan, build props, and set up a haunted house for the Goodland community to enjoy. This event is also a fundraiser for Genesis of Sherman County. &nbsp;

“Each year this event allows for students to work together in teams to plan, design, and implement a large project.&nbsp; Not only are students learning skills of project management, communication, and designing, but students are also being involved in a community based event that helps local families in need.” said Engineering Instructor Mike Zimmerman.

Everyone is invited to come out and experience the haunted house. It will be hosted in the animal barn at the Sherman County Fairgrounds on Oct.r 28 and 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. There will also be an opportunity to go through the haunted house with the lights on and no jump-scares both nights from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Admission is $3 per person or three cans of food per person. All canned food and money collected will be donated to benefit Genesis of Sherman County.&nbsp;

“Our students are very excited to work on this project this year,” Zimmerman said. “We hope to see everyone there and having a fun time.”

Free cancer screenings will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 5, at First United Methodist Church, 305 W. Seventh. 

The free cancer screenings are open to the public and hosted by Hays Masonic Lodge No. 195, Masonic Cancer Alliance and The University of Kansas Cancer Center. No appointments are necessary. Lodge members and staff from MCA are teaming up with health professionals from the University of Kansas Medical Center to provide health services that include: • Skin and Prostate Cancer Screenings • Colon Cancer Take-Home Screening Kits • Tobacco Cessation Information • And More Area Masons work with staff from the MCA, the outreach network of KU Cancer Center, and the Kansas Masonic Foundation to coordinate many of the free screening events that often draw several hundred attendees of all ages.

According to Brooke Groneman, MCA outreach director, over 20,000 Kansas residents have attended the screenings since 2003. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, approximately 9,500 Americans are diagnosed with some form of skin cancer every day, and nearly 250 of those are diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer.

The Centers for Disease Control reports that cancer is currently the second leading cause of death in Kansas, and the region has higher than average rates of skin cancer compared to other parts of the country. When it comes to the possibility of cancer, it is always better to catch a potential problem in the earliest stage possible. Anyone identified with a possible health concern at one of the free cancer screenings is advised by the screening team to follow up with his/her local physician.
