Fort Hays State University’s Science Café for this month is set for Monday.

This month’s presentation, entitled&nbsp;“Lactate Level to Evaluate Fitness in Race Horses,”&nbsp;is sponsored by FHSU’s Science and Mathematics Education Institute. The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. at The Venue in Thirsty’s Brew Pub &amp; Grill, 2704 Vine.

Thoroughbred racehorses topic of next Science Cafe

The Kansas Department of Transportation has started work on a bridge replacement project along U.S. 40 in Logan County.

The bridge is located approximately 6 miles west of Oakley. Initial work will primarily take place off the roadway with little to no impact to motorists. Traffic will later be reduced to one lane and controlled by a stoplight while the bridge is being paved, which is scheduled for spring 2023.&nbsp;

Construction is expected to be completed in May 2023, weather permitting.

Sporer Land Development of Oakley is the primary contractor with a total contract cost of approximately $1.85 million.&nbsp;

HILL CITY — Graham County Arts Council is excited to sponsor an upcoming concert by the Armouraires Quartet at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Hill City United Methodist Church.

The group is returning to Hill City after a well-received, successful performance last year.

The Armouraires, a men’s gospel quartet based out of Wichita, has the following mission statement:&nbsp; “Our mission is to go where God leads us to use our personal testimonies and music to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

Through the years, the quartet has been nominated three times for the “Artist Music Guild Group of the Year," and has received “Midwest Group of the Year” four times, “Song of the Year” twice, and “Midwest Ambassadors of the Year” and “Midwest Live Album of the Year” once.  

The concert will feature their trademark gospel songs with the addition of a few Christmas selections.

There is no admission charge for this event, but you may give a love offering if you wish.

BUNKER HILL —&nbsp; When PBS first went on the air “it was born out of the idea that Americans deserved a non-commercial television service whose sole mission is to educate and&nbsp;inspire.” Smoky Hills PBS has been making that mission a reality for 40 years now.&nbsp; On Nov. 10 Smoky Hills PBS will celebrate its 40th anniversary of bringing trusted educational programs and services to all ages of viewers in Central and Western Kansas.&nbsp;

Betsy Schwien, General Manager of SHPBS, shares the station’s plans for the year ahead, including the launch of the station’s signature 40th anniversary logo.&nbsp; 

“We want to celebrate not only this week, but all year. Our theme,&nbsp;40 Years: In Your Neighborhood, embodies exactly what has happened over the 40 years here at Smoky Hills PBS. The media landscape has dramatically changed since the grand opening ceremonies 40 years ago. Back then, you could only receive us over the air and on some cable networks," she said. "Now, 40 years later, you can access SHPBS at your fingertips with a click of a button or a tap on your mobile device.&nbsp; Our mission is to be in the communities we serve — whether it’s on your television screen, tablet, or mobile device, at an event, or in classrooms.&nbsp; We provide free services to educate and inspire all ages of people in Central and Western Kansas in a variety of different ways.&nbsp; That mission is as important today as it was 40 years ago.”

The Robert E. And Patricia Schmidt Foundation recently donated $25,000 to the American Red Cross to help support recovery efforts following Hurricane Ian.

The Red Cross has dispatched multiple vehicles, which will most likely be deployed for weeks, and the foundation's gift will help support the volunteers manning the vehicles and help restock supplies.

"Our hearts go out to those effected by this devastating storm," said Schmidt Foundation Chairman Gary Shorman, "and we offer our sincere thanks to the Red Cross for offering much-needed assistance during this recovery.

"The mission of the Red Cross is an admirable one, and we'd urge our communities to do what they can to help by donating."

Schmidt Foundation gift will aid Ian recovery efforts

&nbsp;TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a boil water advisory for the city of Alexander public water supply system located in western Rush County.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:&nbsp;

The advisory took effect Tuesday and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved.&nbsp;KDHE&nbsp;officials issued the advisory because&nbsp;

the city cannot currently maintain the minimum required chlorine residual. Failure to maintain required chlorine residual levels may put the system at risk for bacterial contamination. &nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.&nbsp;

The Kansas Judicial Branch and Ellis County District Court have announced that Kansas Legal Services will be providing legal aid to Kansans through the Ellis County District Court Self Help Center.&nbsp;KLS will provide advice and may give limited assistance with reviewing and drafting court documents related to non-criminal matters. &nbsp;Attorneys may also assist with expungements.

KANSAS CITY — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced it will waive day use fees at its more than 2,850 USACE-operated recreation areas nationwide, including Wilson Lake and Kanopolis Lake, in observance of Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

The waiver covers fees for boat launch ramps and swimming beaches. The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities (group picnic shelters) and events. Other agencies that manage recreation areas on USACE lands are encouraged, but not required, to offer the waiver in the areas that they manage.

Visitors are encouraged to contact USACE lake and river projects before visiting to ensure recreation areas are open. The status of USACE-managed campgrounds, boat ramps and swimming beaches and other sites is available at&nbsp;<a href="https://corpslakes.erdc.dren.mil/visitors/status.cfm" target="_blank">https://corpslakes.erdc.dren.mil/visitors/status.cfm</a>.

USACE began the Veterans Day fee waiver in 2006 as a way to honor the men and women who have served our nation and the armed forces.

🎥 CVB: Holiday season kicks off in Hays this month

The next exhibition, Love's Pure Light — Art Scarves by Cydney Mariel Galbraith, at&nbsp; Deines Cultural Center opens on Friday with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Deines will exhibit a collection of luxury scarves created by Cydney Mariel Galbraith and carefully curated by Melissa Oste. Cydney Mariel Galbraith spends time listening to that still small voice, and releasing designs that minister to the heart first.

Each original artwork is hand painted on pure silk. The art is then printed on luxury, eco-friendly, organic fabrics by Love’s Pure Light Luxury Silks Canada.

Every scarf is unique with limited production of each design per season.

Love’s Pure Light is at the Deines Cultural Center from Friday through Dec. 16.

The Deines is in Russell at 820 N. Main. It is open from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. Admission is free and all are welcome. Call 785-483-3742 for information.

Norton memorial gun raffle will benefit youth outdoor sports

The Union Pacific Railroad has rescheduled the repair work on its crossing on U.S. 83 near Oakley. The repairs are now planned to take place Nov. 7 and 8.

During the work, the Kansas Department of Transportation will close U.S. 83 in both directions at the crossing, which is located just north of the U.S. 40 junction. Local traffic may continue to access the road up to the closure point. Through traffic will be detoured on I-70 and U.S. 40.

Union Pacific and its traffic control subcontractor will oversee the repairs of the crossing and traffic control signing.

Jerry Ryan, Bobby Horton, Brad Ryan and Andy&nbsp;Megginnis&nbsp;have been having a good time right along with their audiences all over the country for 50 years. At 3 p.m. Central on Sunday, Nov. 13, the Cultural Arts Center in Colby will be the site for these gents to perform their unique&nbsp;four-part harmony.&nbsp;Their &nbsp;pleasing&nbsp;blend of voices and instruments, from a heartrending country song to an unexpected a cappella rendition,&nbsp;is&nbsp;suitable for the entire family. Three on a String’s show has evolved into a well-timed, musically interesting and funny presentation. &nbsp;

Three on a String has enjoyed working with performers such as the Statler Brothers, Ray Stevens, The Oak Ridge Boys, Hank Williams Jr., and Red Skelton. They have shared the stage with former Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush. They have performed for, and with, symphony orchestras, arts councils,&nbsp;conventions and&nbsp;concerts. &nbsp;Among their many awards, they were honored to receive the Governor's Achievement Award and inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.

The performance is funded in part by grants from both the Thomas County Community Foundation through Greater Northwest Kansas Community Foundation and the Dane G. Hansen Foundation. Admission is with&nbsp;WPAA&nbsp;season ticket, or at the door; Adults, $20; Students, $10.
