&nbsp;“The War Years: A Kansas Experience, 1941-1945”&nbsp;

This Hays Arts Council exhibition was created 30 years ago by then HAC director Leland Powers and HAC members Leon J. Staab and Michael Jilg.&nbsp;It was developed to honor the (then) 45th anniversary of the end of World
 War II.&nbsp; 

It opened in September of 1990, and remains in the HAC’s permanent collection of works. 

The 75th anniversary of that historical event will be&nbsp;this fall, but we're noting that February of 1945 is regarded as the “beginning of the end” of the war.&nbsp; Seventy-five
 years ago this month, the Battle of the Bulge had barely ended (Jan. 25, 1945, the Yalta Conference was held, the bombing raids on Dresden started, the Battle of Iwo Jima began, and United States Marines ultimately raised the US flag on the summit of Mount
 Suribachi. 

In honor of that February 1945 history, we are again showcasing this collection of images throughout this month at the Hays Arts Council, 112 E. 11th St.,&nbsp; Hays. 

The exhibition features images gathered from private collections, largely from Hays area service men &amp; women. It was designed to document the human quality of their war experience. 

The original photos were, in general,
 small snapshots - but they were professionally enlarged to 2ft x 2ft. 

Among the images are those from the collections of Wendelin Staab, F.R. Oshant, Jr., Ed Moore, Arris Johnson, Dr. John Streck, Helen Kramer and Thaine Clark. The exhibition is comprised
 of 16 panels featuring a single image and its accompanying text.

Join us at the Deines Cultural Center for a month of artwork made by the K-12 students of Russell's public schools.

The opening celebration will Sunday, March 1 with cookies and punch served from 1 p.m.-4 p.m.

The Student Art Show will remain up until April 10.

An Integrated Weed Control Management of Herbicide Resistant Weeds program will be held on Wednesday, February 19 in Great Bend at American Ag Credit, 5634 10th Street.  

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. the program starts at 9:00 a.m. and concludes at 11:30 a.m. followed by a complimentary noon meal.  

Topics will be the role of integrated weed management in controlling difficult weeds, managing multiple herbicide-resistant palmer amaranth, and updates on herbicides and herbicide tolerant traits. 

Presenters will be Sarah Lancaster and Vipan Kumar, Extension weed control specialists.  

Continuing education units for CCA &amp; Commercial Applicators are available.

We are excited to be holding a workshop with local photographer and wildlife biologist, Tony Ifland from the Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge. This will be a workshop open to intermediate photographers who have their own equipment.  Space is limited and spots will fill up quickly!  

Friday evening Tony will give a short workshop on setting up your Canon or Nikon camera for capturing birds or wildlife in low light outdoor settings.  He will also talk about the habits and biology of Prairie Chickens in the Kirwin Wildlife Refuge Area. 

Early Saturday morning attendees will be guided to an area on the refuge to shoot images of Prairie Chickens in action.  Blinds will be provided.  Warm clothing is suggested.  This part of the workshop will take up to 3 or 4 hours, so please be prepared for the temperature change and to be still.

Workshop fee of $20 will go toward the dinner and lunch provided by the Phillips County Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau. Payment is due in our office at 205 F St., Phillipsburg, by Mar. 20.

     - Telephoto lens (optional, but helpful)

     - Clothing appropriate for a cold morning and sitting without moving.  Dark clothing is better because lighter colors can be seen by the chickens

Wildlife photography workshop at Kirwin Refuge

Republican Dr. Bill Clifford, an ophthalmologist, Finney County commissioner, and former U.S.&nbsp;Air Force fighter pilot, announced his candidacy for Congress in September 2019.

&nbsp;A graduate of&nbsp;Air Force fighter pilot,&nbsp;the U.S. Air Force Academy and the University of Southern California's Keck School of&nbsp;Medicine, Dr. Clifford has served patients in rural communities across western Kansas for 25&nbsp;years. 

In addition to his service as a Finney County commissioner, he has also served as a&nbsp;Garden City Community College trustee, Kansas president of the Air Force Association,&nbsp;president of the Kansas Society of Eye Physicians &amp; Surgeons, and trustee of the American&nbsp;Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Clifford and his wife, Jean, a member of the Kansas State Board of Education and an Air Force&nbsp;veteran herself, are the proud parents of six children, five of them adopted. The Cliffords live in&nbsp;Garden City.

A proud tradition since 1976, the 43rd Annual High School Art Show, the Dane G. Hansen Museum in Logan has partnered with several art instructors to provide a professional gallery experience for their high school art students. 

 In allowing these student artists to display their work in the museum, our hope is to inspire them; to fuel their passion for art and to encourage them to continue creating past their high school years. 

High schools on display include Norton Community, Trego Community, Hill City, Smith Center, Phillipsburg, and TMP-Marian.

  Artwork will be on view at the Hansen Museum, 110 W. Main, Logan, from February 7 to March 8, 2020.

Our special guest speaker is Pamela Cornwell, LCMFT. 

She will discuss "Building Resilience: What's in Your Toolbox?"

 Pamela is a graduate of Wichita State University with a BA in Psychology and Friends University with an MS in Marriage and Family Therapy. 

She has worked with survivors of abuse and neglect for more than 28 years. Pamela is certified in the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics, Trauma Systems Therapy and is a facilitator for Healing of Memories workshops. She provides organization-based training on trauma and child development.

Spotter training classes cover severe weather hazards including thunderstorms and tornadoes.  This includes the general structure and movement of severe thunderstorms, identification of important storm features, and safety concerns.

*Classes are appropriate for all ages. Ages 10 and up will likely get the most out of the training.

*Pre-registration is NOT required unless specifically noted for a particular class.  

*Classes are scheduled in collaboration with local emergency management officials.

*You may attend a class in any location, offered by any NWS office, regardless of where you live.

Every day, the Red Cross responds to disasters, collects blood and teaches lifesaving skills in the community. To do that, the Red Cross relies on generous volunteers who give their time and talent to help fulfill its lifesaving mission. Ninety percent of the work of the Red Cross is carried out by volunteers. An extensive range of volunteer positions are available—from front-line services to behind-the-scenes duties.

The Red Cross works with potential volunteers to identify the opportunities that fit the individual’s skills, expertise, interest and availability. Volunteering is rewarding and meaningful. It is a chance for people to make a difference in their community by using their knowledge and experiences, while developing new skills.

Join us for a FREE Day at the Sternberg Museum and learn about the amazing research that is happening under the dome.

Come explore more about 3D scanning fossils, the bat populations of Kansas, research being conducted on the Museum's nature trails, and how looking inside bones tells us how animals grew. 

There will be walk-through tours of the fossil prep lab and the histology research lab, and guided gallery tours explaining how research informs museum exhibits.

At 2 p.m., there will be a reception with the discoverers and donors behind the newest species at the Sternberg Museum: Cretodus houghtonorum! C. houghtonorum is a species of Late Cretaceous shark that was found in Mitchell County, Kansas in 2010.
