HHS program seeking senior citizen pen pals

The Monarch 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament and 
Hotshot Contest will be Saturday, March 21 at Thomas More Prep-Marian, Holy Family Elementary and the former 
Kennedy Middle School. 

The tournament is limited to grades third through eighth.

A permission form must also be completed for participation and can be found <a href="https://tmp-m.org/monarch-3-on-3-basketball-tournament-2/">HERE</a>.

Admission to the tournament (players excluded) is $2 per person. 
Children 5 and younger are free. Concessions will be available.

St. Mary’s Knights of Columbus Council #2133 is celebrating their 100th&nbsp;Anniversary of the Charter and 50th&nbsp;Anniversary &amp; Rejuvenation of the Knights Hall on Sunday, February 16, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. Mass, celebrated by Bishop Vincke and Father Dana Clark.&nbsp; A Come &amp; Go Reception will follow mass at the Ellis Knights of Columbus Hall with light hors’doeuvres, desserts, and beverages.&nbsp; We invite ALL Knights, along with families, as well as spouses of deceased Knights to sit in the front section of the church during Mass and to attend the reception following mass.

A K-State Sorghum Production school will offer in-depth information for sorghum growers and key stakeholders. 

The school is sponsored by Kansas Grain Sorghum Commission. 

It will be on Thursday, January 30th at the Great Bend Recreation Commission, Burnside Room, 1214 Stone Street. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. the program starts at 8:45 a.m. and concludes at 1:00 p.m.&nbsp;

The sorghum school will cover a number of issues facing sorghum growers: risk management, marketing opportunities, weed control, crop production practices, and nutrient and soil fertility.&nbsp;

Lunch will be provided courtesy of the Kansas Grain Sorghum Commission. 

There is no cost to attend, but participants are asked to pre-register by Monday, Jan. 27.

K-State Sorghum School set for Thursday

The Western Kansas Human Resource Management Association will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Feb.&nbsp;11, at the Robbins Center (Eagle Communication Hall, on the FHSU campus.&nbsp; 

Registration is from 11:15 to 11:30 a.m., with a short business meeting starting at 11:30 a.m.&nbsp; 

The program for the February meeting will be “Drugs in the Workplace,” presented by Trooper Tod Hileman with the Kansas Highway Patrol. The program will be submitted for SHRM continuing education credits. WKHRMA members can RSVP at&nbsp;<a href="http://wkhrma.shrm.org/" target="_blank">wkhrma.shrm.org</a>. The deadline to RSVP is noon on February 7.&nbsp;

TMP-M Pop Singers Dinner Show

WAKEENEY - Giant grasshoppers and elusive jackalopes.&nbsp; Kansas is a place of tall tales and legendary characters, but these exaggerations are more than just interesting stories meant to entertain. They are the stories we share to explain the uniqueness of the Kansas character.

In celebration of Kansas Day, the Trego County Historical Society will examine our state’s many legends and folktales and what they say about the communities that keep these stories alive during a presentation on&nbsp;“Kansas Legends and Folktales" with Jim Hoy.

On Sunday, January 26,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.humanitieskansas.org/get-involved/request-speaker/jim-hoy-kansas-legends-and-folktales">historian and author Jim Hoy</a>&nbsp;will present&nbsp;“Kansas Legends and Folktales,” an examination of&nbsp;the history of these stories and how they have helped shape the character of our state and its people.

 As a former director of the Center for Great Plains Studies at Emporia State University and an authority on the folklife of ranching, Hoy is an authority on the&nbsp;subject&nbsp;and has co-authored “Plains Folk,” a syndicated newspaper column focused on&nbsp;rural Kansas life.

&nbsp;This presentation is funded by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.humanitieskansas.org/grants-programs/speakers-bureau">Kansas Humanities</a>’&nbsp;Movement of Ideas&nbsp;Speakers Bureau, an organization dedicated to sharing stories that inspire our imaginations, spark informed conversations, and generate insights that strengthen civic engagement through presentations and workshops with experts on the subjects.

Along with the presentation, awards will be handed out to the top recipients of the museum’s annual Kansas Day coloring contest.

This is the eighth year the Historical Society has sponsored the program for Trego Grade School’s first through fourth grades students and every year the entries focus on places found in Trego County.
