HILL CITY — Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas will be holding a special ribbon cutting Tuesday for the newly renovated exterior of its Kobler Developmental Center location in Hill City. 

The ribbon cutting at the Kobler Center, 100 W. McFarland, will also include the movement and rededication of a time capsule that was buried within the building in 1982. The time capsule was uncovered during the renovation of the building and will be moved and rededicated in a prominent section of the building and opened in the future.

The event will begin at 2 p.m. and will include the ribbon cutting by the Hill City Chamber of Commerce, a look at the outside of the building and refreshments.

RUSSELL - Today we found out that it will be 10 weeks before our air conditioner can be replaced. 

 Beginning on Tuesday, September 1st we will go to slightly earlier/reduced hours in an attempt to beat the heat. 

 We will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday-Saturday. 

 If the weather starts to get cooler or the air conditioner is replaced earlier, we will go back to our regular hours. 

 Hours will be updated on our Facebook page and website as things progress.  Thank you for your understanding and patience.

United Way food/PPE drive extended one week

In the uncertain times of the coronavirus pandemic, the assistance provided by the United Way of Ellis County to disadvantaged residents is more than important than ever, says Erica Berges, executive director.

United Way held its kickoff luncheon Friday at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall for the <a href="https://www.liveunited.us/campaign">2020 fundraising campaign</a>, "1 For All."&nbsp;

The event was sponsored by the Hays Chamber and Eagle Communications.&nbsp;

"We know this year has been rough for many," Berges said to the audience.

"Cut hours, job layoffs, school closures. You name it, something seemed to happen.&nbsp;

"The United Way partner agencies have seen increased need and, at the same time unfortunately, declining revenue due to fundraiser efforts that had to be canceled because of the pandemic."

"So this year, I'm asking you to dig a little deeper, reach a little further, just give a little bit more to help those agencies," Berges said, "because they are helping the most vulnerable in our community."

Across the country, United Way campaign volunteers have been told to expect donations to be down 10 to 30 percent this year.

Berges wants Ellis County to be the outlier.

"Let's prove them wrong. Let's show then the caring power of Ellis County and what we can do when we all come together," she said.

Bill Oyet, administrative assistant, reviewed a couple opportunities to donate to the United Way, in addition to the traditional direct cash, online donation, and payroll deduction.

"We are going through difficult economic times right now," Oyet acknowledged, "so this year we came up with a few options that will make donating easier for all."

One of those is Amazon Smile, a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) program.

"Amazon shoppers can go to Smile.Amazon.com, create an account, and designate half a percent of your online purchases to your favorite charity - United Way," Oyet smiled and pointed to his United Way logo shirt.&nbsp; "You guys already knew that," he added as the crowd laughed.

Another option, Round Up Giving, is new this year.

"The software program rounds up your credit purchases to the nearest dollar, and that change will be donated to the United Way."

Oyet believes Round Up Giving, which also works with debit cards, will be particularly attractive to young people who don't have extra cash to donate.

"This is a great solution," he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The&nbsp;<a href="https://roundupapp.com/for-nonprofits/">Round Up Giving </a>for nonprofits app is available on the United Way website.&nbsp;

"I really recommend these options," Oyet said. "They're simple to use and easy to recommend to other people."

One major change this year is switching from a single campaign chairman to a six-person campaign committee.&nbsp;

They are Niki Clark, Kara Denton, Lisa Keever, Kelly Lewis, Korinna Parker, and Amy Schaffer.

Also changing is the Heritage Society, comprised of donors contributing $500 or more.

It's now the Champions Circle, with a new fundraising competition between large businesses to claim the trophy for display in their facility.

Fundraising events still on the calendar are the Oct. 4&nbsp; golf tournament and several Dine Out Days at local restaurants.&nbsp;

A Hays restaurant is temporarily closed due to positive COVID-19 test results.

Taco Shop, 333 W. Eighth, will remain closed for an undetermined amount of time as employees are waiting to complete COVID-19 testing — following positive tests of other staff members, according to Bob Long, manager.

The length of the closure will depend on testing results and could run from a few days to two weeks.

COLBY — ArtRageous, the first art show of the school year for the Colby Community College art department, is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3, at the Prairie Museum of Art and History.&nbsp;

The show features a mix of two and three-dimensional works. CCC art instructor Rebel Mahieu said the event has a unique format.

"Artists will bring two or four pieces," she said. "Most of them will be at the show to describe how the pieces they hang contrast with their style."

Contributing artists include&nbsp;Kary Zweygardt, CCC alumnus and curator of the Quincy Art Gallery in St. Francis,&nbsp;along with his wife Kim; Joe Hartman, Mahieu, Mike McLaughlin, and Suzanne Schielke from Colby; retired CCC art instructor Cal Mahin and retired Fort Hays State University art instructor Kathleen Kuchar of Hays; current FHSU art instructors Toby Flores, Brian Hutchinson and Linda Ganstrom; Garden City Community College art instructor Michael Knutson; Tony Spivey of Goodland; and Great Bend's Von Pounds.&nbsp;

Colby CC's ArtRageous art show set for this week

TOPEKA – A Hays organization has been awarded nearly $77,000 in grants to provide services for victims of crime, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced Friday.

Options: Domestic and Sexual Violence Services Inc. was awarded grants to support the following programs in 18 counties across Kansas:

“Organizations across Kansas do great work every day to support victims of crime,” Schmidt said. “We are proud to support these organizations through the victims services grant programs.”

The awards were made from the Protection from Abuse Fund and the State Crime Victims’ Assistance Fund. The Protection from Abuse Fund is funded by State General Fund appropriations, marriage license fees, county court costs and municipal court assessments. The State Crime Victims’ Assistance Fund is funded though the remittance of applicable fines, penalties and forfeitures from clerks of the district courts.

This year, the attorney general’s office awarded nearly $2.6 million in grants to local and state crime victim assistance organizations. More information on the grant programs and the full list of award recipients is available on the attorney general’s website at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ag.ks.gov/#_blank">www.ag.ks.gov</a>.

Kansas AG Schmidt announces grants for Options

The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin a resurfacing project on 16 miles of Interstate 70 in Trego County on Monday.&nbsp;

Project work will consist of a mill and overlay in both the eastbound and westbound lanes beginning at Exit 127 at WaKeeney and ending at the Ellis County line. Traffic will be reduced to one lane through the work zones with a lowered speed limit. Minor delays not exceeding five minutes should be expected.

KDOT anticipates work to be completed by the end of December, weather permitting.

Hays Girl Scout Troop 11220 will be collecting water bottles and bottled water from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Big Dillons in Hays.

Hays USD 489 has closed its water fountains as a precaution against the spread of COVID-19, so it is requiring students to bring water bottles to school.

"My girls were concerned what would happen if someone forgot their water bottle. They would have to go without water all day. I asked them what they could do about it," said Kris Bradley, Scout leader.

The Brownie and Daisy Scouts will be outside of Dillons accepting the water bottles and bottled water.

Bradley said the elementary schools are requesting bottles that are no larger than 2o ounces. The middle school requires bottles to be clear.

"They saw a problem, and this was a way to address it," Bradley said. "The water bottles will be going to their schools, so they can see the impact of what they are doing."

The Cottonwood Extension District will host a Grain Sorghum Plot Field Day in Barton County on Monday beginning at 9 a.m. It is located 1.75 miles north of Hoisington on Susank Road.&nbsp;

Seed company representatives will be on-hand to discuss their sorghum hybrids. Extension agronomy specialist Lucas Haag will discuss sorghum production practices, and J.P. Michaud, Extension entomologist, will discuss insect issues.

Complimentary breakfast burritos and refreshments will be provided courtesy of the seed companies at 8:30 a.m.&nbsp;

Traffic will be shifted to the east side of Vine
 with one lane of traffic in each direction in the area of 32nd and 33rd streets. Temporary traffic signal lights will be in place to allow 
full access including left turns to and from 32nd and 33rd. &nbsp;This
 new configuration will allow the construction of the west half of the 
roundabout at 32nd/33rd and Vine and should last about six weeks.

Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas will be holding a special ribbon cutting on September 1 for the newly renovated exterior of its Kobler Developmental Center location in Hill City. 

The event will begin at 2:00 p.m. and will include the ribbon cutting by the Hill City Chamber of Commerce, a look at the outside of the building and refreshments.

Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas will be holding a special ribbon cutting on September 1 for the newly renovated exterior of its Kobler Developmental Center location in Hill City. The ribbon cutting at the Kobler Center, 100 W. McFarland, will also include the movement and rededication of a time capsule that was buried within the building in 1982. The time capsule was uncovered during the renovation of the building and will be moved and rededicated in a prominent section of the building and opened in the future.The event will begin at 2:00 p.m. and will include the ribbon cutting by the Hill City Chamber of Commerce, a look at the outside of the building and refreshments.

Recently, a new booster pump station was installed near 41st and Post Road in Hays. 

This booster station, along with a new water line installed under Interstate 70, will provide an additional source of water north of I-70 and improve water pressure to homes and businesses in the northwest corner of Hays. 

From Tuesday through Sept. 14, city staff along with Midlands Contracting Inc. will be testing the new booster pump station, the water line and finalizing connections in the system. 

Businesses and homeowners in the new pressure zone may notice fluctuations in their water pressure.

will take place in the 2300 block of 280th Avenue. This is located between Severin Road
and St. John-St. Andrew Road. 

This 1-mile stretch will be closed to through traffic beginning at
9 a.m. on Monday and will remain closed until the project is completed.
The expected completion date will be Sept. 3, pending weather conditions.


Motorists traveling in the affected closure area should use alternate routes of travel until the

NORTON — Norton County Community Foundation (NCCF) awarded&nbsp;$5,000 to Norton County nonprofit organizations and charitable projects in the July grant cycle. These funds were part of the Dane G. Hansen Community Grant Fund, which offers financial support to qualifying and deserving projects and programs in Northwest Kansas.&nbsp;Grant funds supported the following organization and project:

The funds will be applied to matching grant funding as well as existing Norton County Museum operating budget funding to replace and upgrade the 64 windows of the Museum. The current windows are original to the 82-year old building, are single pane/energy inefficient, and allow damaging UV to enter the building, causing negative impact to UV-sensitive historical artifacts. Additionally, the aged windows require frequent and expensive upkeep. “This investment would drastically cut future upkeep costs while providing significant energy savings because the window surface area is such a large percentage of the overall building wall area,” said Mike Posson, Executive Director of Norton City/County Economic Development and&nbsp;Norton County Historical Society/Museum Board Member.

“The Museum building is part of our historic district and helps share the stories of past generations of Norton County,” said Tara Vance, NCCF Executive Director. “NCCF is proud to support this project to ensure the longevity of the building and its contents.”
