FHSU ADP to host event about sexual assault response teams 

Colby High School Auditorium is the venue for The Denver Brass and baritone Steven Taylor, at 3 p.m. central, Sunday, Oct. 25. The Western Plains Arts Association program is made possible with support from businesses and individual donors throughout northwest Kansas, including a special gift from the Dane G. Hansen, Logan. The primary Colby venue, Frahm Theatre, has suspended all public events since at least through the end of 2020. Because of COVID 19 precautions, social distancing is required and masks are encouraged inside Colby High School. Admission by WPAA season ticket or adults $20, students $10.

MANHATTAN — Grain growers in western Kansas who plan to campaign for a seat on one of the state’s five&nbsp;grain commodity commissions — corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, wheat or sunflowers — should be gathering petition&nbsp;















signatures now to meet the
Nov. 30, 2020, filing deadline. The 2021 election will
cover districts I, II, and III; or the western third of Kansas.

District I includes Cheyenne,
Decatur, Graham, Norton, Rawlins, Sheridan, Sherman, and Thomas counties. District II includes Gove, Greeley, Lane, Logan, Ness, Scott, Trego, Wallace,
and Wichita counties. District III includes Clark, Finney, Ford, Grant, Gray,
Hamilton, Haskell, Hodgeman, Kearny, Meade, Morton, Seward, Stanton, and
Stevens counties.

To be eligible to run for
any of the five commodity commissions, the candidate must have been actively
engaged in growing corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, wheat or sunflowers within
the preceding five years and may only represent the district of their primary
residence. 
Candidates must gather 20 signatures from eligible growers to be included on
the 2021 ballot. No more than five signatures from any one county can be used
to qualify a candidate. Eligible growers are Kansas residents of legal voting
age and who have grown corn, grain sorghum,&nbsp;soybeans, sunflowers or wheat for the last three years.

New to this year’s election, candidates will have the option to
create petitions and collect signatures online.

Early Childhood Connections online event to address COVID adversities

A wide range of local artists’ work will be on display in the Shafer Gallery at Barton Community College, Great Bend,&nbsp; as part of the Barton County Arts Council Friends and Acquaintances exhibit Oct. 23 through Dec. 1. 

The virtual reception will be at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/shafergallery">Facebook.com/shafergallery</a> and will include brief interviews with participating artists. A catalog of all the pieces will be posted as well.

The Fort Hays State University American Democracy Project (ADP) provides numerous civic and political engagement activities that challenge and encourage students, faculty, staff, and community members to find their place and make a difference. 

FHSU ADP values the importance of presenting unbiased information to students, faculty, staff, and community members. With election security being a national topic of concern, the FHSU ADP has created an informational event to discuss the topic.

Dr. Michael Smith, online professor for the Political Science Department at Fort Hays State University and Erika Martin, assistant professor of Biological Sciences at Emporia State University will be discussing the topic of election security.

The event will take place on October 13 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. CDT.

The importance of being actively involved in politics is something faculty and staff at Fort Hays State University continually stress to students.

Once again this year, multiple entities at FHSU and in the city of Hays are teaming up to provide live debate coverage of the 111th District in the Kansas House of Representatives. The race features incumbent Barbara Wasinger, R-Hays, and challenger Eber Phelps, D-Hays.

The debate will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 12 and will be broadcast live on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/fhsusga/">FHSU Student Government Association’s Facebook page</a> at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/fhsusga/">https://www.facebook.com/fhsusga/</a>.

“Every single host involved in ensuring these debates happen care greatly about civic engagement, and voters should take this opportunity to become informed about candidates and issues that will better our community,” said Crystal Rojas, legislative affairs director of the FHSU Student Government Association.&nbsp;

The event is being made possible by the collaboration of the FHSU Student Government Association, the American Democracy Project, the Department of Political Science, Tiger Media Network, the Hays Area Chamber of Commerce and the Docking Institute of Public Affairs.

“The 2020 November election will have a significant impact on the businesses and residents of Ellis County,” said Sarah Wasinger, president/CEO of the Hays Chamber. “Chamber advocacy for member investors is critical, especially this year and moving forward due to all the legislation that impacts local businesses. We encourage all registered voters and the public to watch the election forums this October. Exercise due diligence, research candidates and be sure to vote on Nov. 3.”

The next change in the Vine Street construction traffic configuration will occur Thursday. 

Traffic on Vine Street will be switched over to the west side of Vine Street between 29th and 35th Street onto the new pavement. Traffic will be one lane in each direction following the curve of the west half of the 32nd/33rd Street roundabout. 32nd Street traffic at Vine will be westbound only to allow the construction of the splitter island. 

Eastbound 32nd Street traffic will be detoured at Oak Street. Once the splitter island is complete, eastbound 32nd Street will be allowed to access Vine Street. However, no left turns will be allowed. 33rd Street will be completely closed at Vine Street to allow for the expedient completion of the roundabout.

GREAT BEND – Barton Community College will help area high school seniors plan for their futures at&nbsp;various “Senior Days”&nbsp;events&nbsp;with&nbsp;attendance&nbsp;capped at 45 students per session. Social distancing guidelines will be&nbsp;strictly&nbsp;followed&nbsp;and masks will be required when social distancing cannot be maintained.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; The schedule is as follows:&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Oct.&nbsp;20 -&nbsp;Health Science (Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Physical Therapy, Sports Management)&nbsp; Oct. 27 - Business (Business/Accounting/Marketing)&nbsp; Nov. 3 – Nursing&nbsp; Nov. 4 - Education (Early Childhood/Elementary/Secondary)&nbsp; Nov. 10 - Agriculture&nbsp;(Agriculture/Agriculture&nbsp;Business/Veterinarian/Welding/Scales)&nbsp; Nov. 17 -&nbsp;Performing&nbsp;Arts (Theatre/Dance/Music)&nbsp; Nov. 18 - Criminal Justice&nbsp;

“It is a great idea to at least come and visit and fill out the admissions application&nbsp;and&nbsp;take a look&nbsp;around campus. Things are constantly being updated and evolving out here, and I think some of our local students would be surprised at how much has maybe changed since they were last out here.”&nbsp; &nbsp; Cooper also highlighted that by filling out the&nbsp;admissions&nbsp;application a student also completes the&nbsp;Barton Bound Scholarship application.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“This scholarship program allows students from the state of Kansas with&nbsp;GPAs from 2.5-4.0 to get&nbsp;scholarship&nbsp;dollars&nbsp;from Barton,” she said. “I think it’s important students realize that awarded scholarship money turns into actual cash in their pockets later in life&nbsp;when they have all kinds of bills to&nbsp;pay and things they want to buy. This is money that can go towards a house down payment, car payment or even a fun vacation later in life instead of student loan payments.”&nbsp; &nbsp; Cooper said there is much to know about Barton’s programs and opportunities.&nbsp;

The Hays Public Library, Friends of the Library and the Arc of Central Plains are partnering on a Community Book Exchange. 

Donate used books that are in good shape at Big Creek Crossing on Fri., Nov. 6 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. This is a great opportunity to clear books you don't want anymore out of your house.

The books will then be available for free on Nov. 6 from 5-8 p.m. and Sat., Nov. 7 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Different Walk, same reasons, smaller groups. The Alzheimer's Association's Walk to End Alzheimer’s is happening in Hays on Saturday, Oct. 10, and in Victoria on Saturday, Oct. 17. 

We are walking everywhere — on city sidewalks, hiking trails, paths, and treadmills. I am joining others and walking to honor those we love who are currently battling Alzheimer’s, the sixth&nbsp;leading cause of death in America.&nbsp; We are raising money toward finding a cure, so others don’t have to face the same heartbreak as my family and many others have. I encourage everyone to get out and walk on October 10th and October 17th, wear purple and fundraise so that someday we will be celebrating the first survivor of Alzheimer’s.

We are walking everywhere — on city sidewalks, hiking trails, paths, and treadmills to honor those we love who are currently battling Alzheimer’s, the 6th leading cause of death in America. We are raising money toward finding a cure, so others don’t have to face the same heartbreak as my family and many others have. I encourage everyone to get out and walk on October 10th and October 17th, wear purple and fundraise so that someday we will be celebrating the first survivor of Alzheimer’s. October 10 is the Hays Walk kickoff in downtown Hays at the Union Pacific Plaza from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 am. Learn about the drive-thru Promise Gardens at four locations in Hays on October 10 Walk day.The locations for these promise gardens are Union Pacific Plaza Park, 10th and Main; Brookdale Senior Living on east 27th; Good Samaritan on west 27th; and Via Christ Village on Canterbury where you will see colorful pinwheel flowers representing the different reasons we all walk.
