In celebration of Women's History Month, Women for Kansas is hosting a Zoom performance by Pauline Sharp (citizen of the Kaw Nation) titled "Kanza Chief Lucy."

In the Chautauqua-style, Pauline portrays her grandmother, Lucy Tayiah Eads, the first woman chief of the Kanza who lived in Lawrence, Kansas in the 1950s. The performance surveys Kanza history through the lens of Eads experiences.

Dannar, a freshman majoring in music education, was named to the Dean's List for the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts.

Nearly 6,800 students at Nebraska have been named to the Deans' List for the fall semester.

Hays native named to UNL Dean's List for fall semester

MANHATTAN - The American Legion Boys State of Kansas has announced that due to the uncertainty of coronavirus vaccines being fully available to the general public by the start of June, the 2021 Boys State of Kansas session will move from its traditional early June event to the first part of August. The 2021 ALBSK session, which was to be held Sunday, June 6, through Saturday, June 12, will now be held Sunday, August 1, through Saturday, August 7, at Kansas State University in Manhattan.&nbsp;

The program, which was cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, will be in its 83rd year.

“We did not want to cancel the event a second year in a row,” said Tom Wierman, Kansas Boys State executive director. “After consulting with numerous individuals, we decided holding a virtual event was not feasible nor of interest to potential delegates after having spent most of the last 15 months going to school virtually. With the assistance and blessing of Kansas State University officials, it became clear that moving the date was in the best interest of the delegates, staff/volunteers and the University.”

Traditionally, Kansas Boys State is for individuals who have completed their junior year of high school.

With last year’s cancellation, the ALBSK program announced in January that it was expanding the pool of registrants for this year’s session to include those who have completed their senior year of high school (those who missed out on last year’s event due to the coronavirus pandemic), as well as individuals who have completed their sophomore year of high school.

The American Legion Boys State of Kansas program provides a relevant, interactive, problem-solving experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills civic responsibility. Boys State is a “learning by doing” political exercise that simulates elections, political parties and government at the state, county and local levels, providing opportunities to lead under pressure, showcasing character and working effectively within a team. It’s also an opportunity to gain pride and respect for government, and the price paid by members of the military to preserve democracy.&nbsp;

Those wishing to attend the program should visit <a href="https://ksbstate.org/">ksbstate.org</a> to register.

In addition, anyone can nominate individuals to attend Kansas Boys State by going to ksbstate.org and submitting the person’s name, mailing address, e-mail address, high school and phone number. You can also submit nominees for future years as well.&nbsp;

The new deadline to register to guarantee a spot in the program is Monday, May 31.&nbsp;

The cost to
attend the Boys State of Kansas program is $350; however, in many instances,
sponsors pay the majority of the fees, with the delegate or his family paying
$50. Potential sponsors, such as American Legion posts, civic organizations,
businesses, clubs and interested individuals, or those with questions, should

The Hays city commission will conduct a retreat meeting Sat., Feb.20, at BriefSpace, 219 W. 10th, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Also attending the retreat will be Toby Dougherty, city manager, Collin Bielser, asst. city manager, John Bird, city attorney, and Todd Powell, asst. city attorney.

There is no formal agenda for the meeting.&nbsp;

FHSU Virtual Science Café goes to Mars Feb. 22

First Call For Help is seeking participants in a virtual scavenger hunt fundraiser.

For only $20 per person, grab your friends and fill your car with some of the smartest, funniest and craziest people you know.

Mask up if you’re not all living in the same household.

On Saturday, March 6, take part in the Oh Snap! Pandemic Photo Frenzy! Receive the scavenger hunt clues, virtually, on the morning of the event. Then set out to find the locations. Snap a photo of the answer with your teammates and receive points per correct photo submitted.&nbsp;

First Call for Help strongly urges four person teams, but two people per team will also be accepted. Teams are only limited by the number of people who can safely buckle up in one vehicle, and all passengers must pay the registration fee — $20 for adults or $15 for kids 12 and younger. 

The scavenger hunt will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on March 6. Team scores will be added together and in case of a tie, the teams will compete in a challenge photo. 

Collect additional funds for First Step Housing and your team will be rewarded with extra points.

Prizes will be awarded to the winning team and everyone who registers before the deadline will receive a swag bag.

All funds raised, along with registration fees, will support the First Step Housing Project.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the city of Ellis.

The advisory was issued&nbsp;for customers located on 11th&nbsp;Street from Cottonwood to Baughman and on&nbsp;Ross Street from Cottonwood to Baughman&nbsp;because of a&nbsp;waterline break&nbsp;causing a loss of pressure in the system. Loss of pressure may cause a loss&nbsp;of&nbsp;chlorine residual&nbsp;which&nbsp;can lead to&nbsp;bacterial contamination.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from Ellis&nbsp;indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

Boil Water Advisory rescinded for Ellis; no contamination found

RUSSELL - While communities across the Midwest are experiencing rolling blackouts, the City of Russell is working to keep blackouts from occurring to our customers by generating a portion of our customer's electric demand.

 However, if electric demand exceeds our generating capabilities, controlled service interruptions may become necessary.

The City of Russell has natural gas and diesel electric generation units. The City cannot run the natural gas generation due to the high demand for natural gas and heating priority. The City's diesel generation units are running to cover a portion of customers' electric usage. All customers should prepare for the potential for these periodic outages. If an emergency electricity reduction impacts you, you do not need to report your outage. If you experience an outage that lasts longer than an hour, call 785.483.6311. The City of Russell is again asking customers to take a few specific actions that make a significant impact on electric and natural gas demand.

A few specific actions customers can take to make a significant impact on electric and natural gas demands: • Turn thermostats a little cooler (65-68 degrees) • Avoid the use of electric space heaters • Close blinds and shades to reduce the amount of heat loss through windows. • Turn off unnecessary lights and appliances. • When possible, delay non-essential energy use (washing/drying clothes) to hours lower in energy use (between 10 pm and 5 am). • Businesses are asked to reduce the use of electric lighting and electricity-consuming equipment as much as possible. Customers are also encouraged to:

• Make sure phones, tablets, and other devices stay at a full charge • Fill up your gas tank(s) • Know where your main water valve is. In the unlikely event of an outage, please turn it off and all faucets on to allow pipes to empty to prevent freezing. • Keep a battery-powered charger on hand, if you can • Have an emergency kit on-hand, containing things like blankets, gloves, hats, warm/loose layers of clothes, flashlights, and batteries • Please bring pets indoors. RUSSELL - The effects of widespread and extreme cold weather have led to an increasingly tightening condition in the Southwest Power Pools (SPP) service territory, of which Russell is a part. SPP has requested utilities in their service area to conserve energy until further notice to mitigate the risk of outages. The City of Russell has natural gas and diesel electric generation units.

 The city cannot run the natural gas generation due to the high demand for natural gas and priority given to heating. 

However, the City will run its diesel generation units, covering a portion of the City’s customers electric usage. However, with the high demand for electricity, inadequate supply of natural gas, and other variables, our customers are asked to reduce their electric usage to ensure the electric grid's safety and integrity and that our internal generation can cover the demand. This is not a Russell issue, or a Kansas issue, but a regional issue affecting numerous states in the Midwest.&nbsp;&nbsp;

City of Russell customers asked to conserve energy 

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for&nbsp;a portion of the City of Ellis Public Water Supply System located in Ellis County. 

This advisory is issued for customers located on 11th&nbsp;Street from Cottonwood to Baughman and on Ross Street from Cottonwood to Baughman. This advisory is not related to Covid-19.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

The advisory took effect on February 13 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. 

KDHE issued the advisory because of a waterline break causing a loss of pressure in the system. Loss of pressure may cause a loss of chlorine residual which can lead to bacterial contamination.

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or KDHE announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

UPDATED 11:20 a.m. Feb. 10: Western Plains Arts Association announces the late cancellation of Nashville Legacy that was scheduled for 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 14 at Oakley High School. The musicians plan to reschedule the country program that features the music of Floyd Cramer and Chet Atkins with WPAA during the next season. In addition, the Sunday, Feb 21 program of New Odyssey Guy is CANCELED because the artist is not touring this year.

Oakley High School plans to host “Nashville Legacy” at 3 p.m. CST, on Sunday, Feb. 14. Information about this program will be provided later in this news release.

The lingering effects of COVID-19 has created some changes to the February and March Western Plains Arts Association season line-up. Cancellations or additions in the next two months are:

Feb 21&nbsp;&nbsp; New Odyssey Guy -&nbsp; CANCELED because the artist is not touring this year.

March&nbsp; -&nbsp; Wichita Children's Theatre will NOT be on tour; however, they are doing some streaming of their programs to make available to schools.&nbsp; WPAA is still in the process of working out details to help provide opportunities to some area districts.

March 14 -&nbsp; Ball in the House is CANCELED, but WPAA is pleased to announce the return to Northwest Kansas of Denver’s Queen City Jazz Band that will perform on March 14, 3 p.m. CST, at the Colby High School Auditorium.

Pride of the Prairie Orchestra, Colby, usually performs a spring show for WPAA.&nbsp; They have not met all year so won't do a show.

Jason Coleman and Meagan Taylor bring their “Nashville Legacy” to the Western Plains Arts Association at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 14, at the Oakley High School auditorium.

This 51st Anniversary season concert is made possible from businesses and individual donors throughout northwest Kansas including special grants from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation, Logan, and the Greater Northwest Kansas Community Foundation for Logan County, Bird City. At the door admission is $20 adults and $10 students.

The musicians&nbsp;bring new life to the “Nashville Sound”&nbsp;pioneered by their legendary forerunners – Coleman’s grandfather&nbsp;Floyd Cramer&nbsp;and Taylor’s uncle&nbsp;Chet Atkins&nbsp;– in this nostalgic concert,&nbsp;“Nashville Legacy.”&nbsp;You’ll hear the musicians perform songs like Cramer’s “Last Date” on piano and Atkins’ “Freight Train” on guitar.

Cramer&nbsp;and&nbsp;Atkins were legends at their instruments, two giants in the music industry. Cramer’s unique “slip note” piano style was an essential part of countless country, pop, and rock hits in the 1950s and ‘60s and is widely regarded as the standard for country piano. As innovative thumb-style guitar led him to become known as one of the world’s pre-eminent guitar virtuosos, and many of the records he produced for RCA have become classics.

Though Cramer and Atkins have passed away, their&nbsp;Nashville Legacy&nbsp;lives on through pianist Coleman,&nbsp;and guitarist Taylor.&nbsp;In this concert, the musicians take audiences on a journey back in time to Nashville’s “golden era,” sharing the music made famous by Cramer and Atkins, as well as by the countless country, pop, and rock artists whose careers they impacted, including Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, the Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, Don Gibson, Dolly Parton and Jim Reeves.

The concert is much more than just music, the two share their personal stories of growing up with “Granddad” and “Uncle Chester,” and audiences will enjoy hearing tales of Nashville’s early recording days as told straight from the source. Nashville Legacy is topped off by a heartwarming series of video duets with the descendants and their legendary predecessors that you’ll have to see to believe.

From a young age, it was evident that Coleman had inherited his grandfather’s “slip note” touch at the piano, as it managed to “slip” its way into even the most elementary songs from his early piano lessons. Coleman’s keen ability to play music by ear led to a childhood spent arranging his own renditions of the songs he loved, just as his “Granddad” did throughout his career. In addition to sharing the piano bench at home, he grew up performing with Cramer at his concerts and on national television, and though he was only 12 years old when Cramer passed away, the close relationship they shared formed the foundation upon which Coleman has built his own music career. He made his Grand Ole Opry debut at age 17, and two years later, he was given the honor of playing for the Medallion Ceremony recognizing Cramer’s induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Taylor started out playing piano and then switched to fiddle around age 10, when Atkins gave her a lesson. She did not begin playing guitar until she was 18. While his health had begun failing by then, Atkins’ friends were able to teach her many of his techniques. While an impressive professional guitarist in her own right, Taylor is hailed by fans as having a superior voice to her late uncle.

Hansen Foundation, Logan, and the Greater Northwest Kansas Community Foundation for Logan County, Bird City. At the door admission is $20 adults and $10 students.The musicians&nbsp;bring new life to the “Nashville Sound”&nbsp;pioneered by their legendary forerunners – Coleman’s grandfather&nbsp;Floyd Cramer&nbsp;and Taylor’s uncle&nbsp;Chet Atkins&nbsp;– in this nostalgic concert,&nbsp;“Nashville Legacy.”&nbsp;You’ll hear the musicians perform songs like Cramer’s “Last Date” on piano and Atkins’ “Freight Train” on guitar.Cramer&nbsp;and&nbsp;Atkins were legends at their instruments, two giants in the music industry. Cramer’s unique “slip note” piano style was an essential part of countless country, pop, and rock hits in the 1950s and ‘60s and is widely regarded as the standard for country piano. As innovative thumb-style guitar led him to become known as one of the world’s pre-eminent guitar virtuosos, and many of the records he produced for RCA have become classics.Though Cramer and Atkins have passed away, their&nbsp;Nashville Legacy&nbsp;lives on through pianist Coleman,&nbsp;and guitarist Taylor.&nbsp;In this concert, the musicians take audiences on a journey back in time to Nashville’s “golden era,” sharing the music made famous by Cramer and Atkins, as well as by the countless country, pop, and rock artists whose careers they impacted, including Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, the Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, Don Gibson, Dolly Parton and Jim Reeves.The concert is much more than just music, the two share their personal stories of growing up with “Granddad” and “Uncle Chester,” and audiences will enjoy hearing tales of Nashville’s early recording days as told straight from the source. Nashville Legacy is topped off by a heartwarming series of video duets with the descendants and their legendary predecessors that you’ll have to see to believe.From a young age, it was evident that Coleman had inherited his grandfather’s “slip note” touch at the piano, as it managed to “slip” its way into even the most elementary songs from his early piano lessons. Coleman’s keen ability to play music by ear led to a childhood spent arranging his own renditions of the songs he loved, just as his “Granddad” did throughout his career. In addition to sharing the piano bench at home, he grew up performing with Cramer at his concerts and on national television, and though he was only 12 years old when Cramer passed away, the close relationship they shared formed the foundation upon which Coleman has built his own music career. He made his Grand Ole Opry debut at age 17, and two years later, he was given the honor of playing for the Medallion Ceremony recognizing Cramer’s induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame.Taylor started out playing piano and then switched to fiddle around age 10, when Atkins gave her a lesson. She did not begin playing guitar until she was 18. While his health had begun failing by then, Atkins’ friends were able to teach her many of his techniques. UPDATE: 'Nashville Legacy' performance in Oakley canceled

<a href="http://firstcallelliscounty.com">First Call for Help</a> will receive up to $50,000 in matching funds from the <a href="https://schmidtfoundation.net/">Schmidt Foundation</a>.

Donations received will be used in the First Step Housing, Phase ll Remodeling project and opening.

This project, 607 E. 13th, will provide temporary housing and support for individuals residing in Ellis County who are struggling with homelessness.

“Housing struggles are all too common in our community, and First Step Housing will aid others in this area of need. We are excited and grateful to the Schmidt Foundation and the opportunities it represents," said Linda Mills, First Call for Help executive director.

Any donations received from individuals and businesses by June 30 will be matched by the foundation. First Call for Help has raised $165,000 toward its goal of $250,000.

First Call for Help was established in 1996 and is committed to assisting others in Ellis County who are in crisis and need.

The Schmidt Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life in our communities and was established by Robert E. and Patricia A. Schmidt.
