The Ellis County Disaster Relief Fund, the Rooks County Disaster Relief Fund, and the Trego County Disaster Relief Fund will be able to grant immediate money to nonprofit organizations offering relief services in the impacted areas — following a major emergency, weather event, or other disaster, like the windstorm and wildfires our region experienced on Wednesday.

Nonprofit organizations, schools, churches, and other agencies that are providing direct relief help to people, property, or livestock in the impacted county may be eligible for grant money. Charitable organizations may apply by contacting Sarah Meitner, HCF Executive Director, at (785) 621-4090 or&nbsp;<a href="mailto:sarahmeitner@gscf.org">sarahmeitner@gscf.org</a>. Application deadline is Jan. 21.

That’s why we’re partnering with KDA and KLA to get information and relief to farmers and ranchers as fast as possible.” The KDA&nbsp;<a href="https://kfb.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=45bba928f411d21617c5eadbe&amp;id=a01013ca2e&amp;e=5bf0f0e5fe" target="_blank">resource page</a>&nbsp;is the best source for those wishing to help with hay and other supplies. Regardless of whether the public water supplier or KDHE announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

The 12th annual Community Christmas Dinner will be held on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the VFW in Hays,22nd and Vine. 

The Christmas meal will consist of roast beef, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, corn, and a dinner roll. The Christmas meal is donated and prepared by the men of the VFW, who give their time Christmas Day, and prior, to prepare the meal. The dinner is free to the community, with donations accepted. Donations are in turn given to organizations in Hays that reach the community.&nbsp; With&nbsp;the busyness that often comes during the holiday seasons, Christmas can quickly become about something other than it's true purpose. The Community Christmas Dinner began with the vision to bring the community of Hays together to enjoy a Christmas meal, and to return to the true reason for the season — celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. The Community Christmas Dinner offers a time to refocus on the birth of Christ, and it allows people to experience the love of Christ through a Christmas meal, served by the&nbsp;community to the community.&nbsp;

Service also extends&nbsp;beyond the walls of the VFW through the delivery of meals to those who are unable to make it to the dinner. The Community Christmas Dinner stands upon the scripture that “Love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:8), and God has proven year after year for this to be true with the Community Christmas Dinner, thanks to Christ’s leading and the community members volunteering their time each year.

12th Community Christmas Dinner scheduled in Hays

LOGAN — The Hansen Museum in Logan has announced&nbsp;Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence, a spectacular overview of a new form of bead art, the ndwango (“cloth”), developed by a community of women living and working together in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The plain black fabric that serves as a foundation for the Ubuhle women’s exquisite beadwork is reminiscent of the Xhosa headscarves and skirts that many of them wore growing up. By stretching this textile like a canvas, the artists use colored Czech glass beads to transform the flat cloth into a contemporary art form of remarkable visual depth. Using skills handed down through generations and working in their own unique style “directly from the soul” (in the words of artist Ntombephi Ntobela), the women create abstract as well as figurative subjects for their ndwangos. Ubuhle Women is on view at the Hansen Museum through Jan. 23.

Ubuhle means “beauty” in the Xhosa and Zulu languages and well describes the shimmering quality of light on glass that for the Xhosa people has a special spiritual significance. From a distance, each panel of the ndwango seems to present a continuous surface; but as the viewer moves closer and each tiny individual bead catches the light, the meticulous skill and labor that went into each work—the sheer scale of ambition—becomes stunningly apparent. A single panel can take more than 10 months to complete.

Migration has defined the history of modern South Africa. The late-19th-century discovery of gold and diamonds—and, to a lesser extent, the cultivation of sugar cane—transfigured South African society with its demands for a large, flexible workforce of able men. As workers left their homesteads in rural areas to earn cash salaries, traditional social systems based on direct production from the land began to change. Low pay and harsh working conditions forced many cane cutters to live apart from their wives and families for up to nine months of the year, which led to a breakdown of family life and traditional values.&nbsp; Ubuhle was conceived in response to this social and cultural transformation. Established in 1999 by two women—Ntombephi “Induna” Ntobela and Bev Gibson—on a former sugar plantation in KwaZulu-Natal, Ubuhle began as a way of creating employment for rural women by combining traditional skills and making them profitable. By incorporating a skill that many local women already had—beadwork, a customary form of artistic expression for generations of South African women—and teaching it to those who did not, they began to provide women with a private source of income and a route to financial independence.&nbsp;

Since 2006, the Ubuhle community has lost five artists to HIV/AIDS and other illnesses, nearly halving the number of active artists. Many of the ndwangos thus function as memorials to Ubuhle sisters who have lost their lives. Remembering the dead is a key motivation for the creation of many of these artworks, and it imbues them with a spiritual significance. 
 
Due to the slow, meticulous process of creating a ndwango, the act of beading itself becomes a form of therapy: a way of setting down the issues that are closest to the artists’ hearts; a way of grieving; and a place to encode feelings and memories. In a sense—through their presence in the artist’s thoughts during the act of creation—the deceased enter the very fabric of the work, and so the ndwango becomes a site of memory.&nbsp;

Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence was developed by the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum, Washington, DC, in cooperation with Curators Bev Gibson, Ubuhle Beads, and James Green, and is organized for tour by International Arts &amp; Artists, Washington, DC.

The Ubuhle community exists today due mainly to the determination of two women, Bev Gibson and Ntombephi Ntobela, who co-founded Ubuhle in 1999. Ntombephi is a master beader from the Eastern Cape whose tremendous skill, both as artist and teacher, has been the foundation block of this community. Ntombephi is known as “Induna,” which means “leader,” a term of great respect in South Africa. The title also suggests the responsibility she feels for the community as guardian of its future. Bev herself does not bead, but she has created the space for Ubuhle artists to explore, experiment, and transform the traditional art form. Bev has also been an indomitable source of energy and persistence in the emergence of Ubuhle’s growing vision. She and Ntombephi each bring their own unique skills to the establishment of the community, and it is largely thanks to them that these works exist at all.

 </figure>News releaseLOGAN — The Hansen Museum in Logan has announced&nbsp;Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence, a spectacular overview of a new form of bead art, the ndwango (“cloth”), developed by a community of women living and working together in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The plain black fabric that serves as a foundation for the Ubuhle women’s exquisite beadwork is reminiscent of the Xhosa headscarves and skirts that many of them wore growing up. By stretching this textile like a canvas, the artists use colored Czech glass beads to transform the flat cloth into a contemporary art form of remarkable visual depth. Using skills handed down through generations and working in their own unique style “directly from the soul” (in the words of artist Ntombephi Ntobela), the women create abstract as well as figurative subjects for their ndwangos. Ubuhle Women is on view at the Hansen Museum through Jan. 23.<figure>

BUNKER HILL — The annual PBS KIDS Writer’s Contest is now underway. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.smokyhillspbs.org/kids/pbs-kids-writers-contest/" target="_blank">PBS KIDS Writers Contest</a>&nbsp;is designed to promote the advancement of children’s literacy skills through hands-on, active learning.&nbsp; The contest&nbsp;empowers children in grades K-3 to celebrate creativity and build literacy skills by writing and illustrating their very own stories.&nbsp;

“Smoky Hills PBS is committed to helping children build valuable literacy skills through fun, hands-on opportunities to express their creativity and explore their imagination,” said Haley Gagnon,&nbsp;Special Events Coordinator of Smoky Hills PBS.&nbsp; “The PBS KIDS Writer’s Contest is a great way for children to use their imaginations by writing their own story and illustrating their own story.&nbsp; It’s amazing to see the ideas these young children come up with.”

Starting now, children in central and western Kansas can submit their entries to the Smoky Hills PBS KIDS Writers Contest by mailing their original story, along with an entry form, to Smoky Hills PBS.&nbsp; SHPBS will select local winners and award prizes and trophies in the spring of 2022.&nbsp; Additionally, local winners will be highlighted on&nbsp;<a href="http://smokyhillspbs.org/">SmokyHillsPBS.org</a>&nbsp;and their stories will be featured in a special presentation of contest winners.&nbsp; This special presentation of winners will be shown on air and online.&nbsp;&nbsp;The deadline to submit stories is March 4.

Smoky Hills PBS announces annual PBS KIDS Writers Contest

VICTORIA — Last year, because of COVID-19, the annual “Christmas Cathedral Concert” was canceled. But this year it is back. The traditional favorite will take place at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, at the Basilica of St. Fidelis in Victoria.

Director Terry Crull said the free concert would feature the Fort Hays Singers, Fort Hays State University Concert Choir, and Smoky Hill Chorale, all directed by Crull and accompanied by pianist Pam McGowne.

Also featured will be the Hays High School Chamber Singers, under the direction of Alex Underwood; the Sterling High School Choir, under the direction of Clark Comley; and the FHSU Brass Ensemble, conducted by Peter Lillpopp.

Soloists will include Tom Meagher on organ, Kay Werth on oboe, Bradley Dawson on trumpet, Renetta Dawson on French horn, and vocalist Ivalah Allen.

Crull said the audience would be invited to join the performers on three favorite Christmas carols. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early.

VINCENT — The “Little Town of Bethlehem” Nativity at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Vincent will be open for visitation on Sundays Dec. 12 and 19, as well as Christmas Day.  All times are 1 to 5 p.m. 

  Other appointment times can be made to visit the Nativity by calling Carol Freitag at 785-735-9282. 

  Began in 1927, the Nativity has become a worldwide representation of Christmas featuring rocks and figurines from all 50 states and 105 countries. A live flowing river with sheep, shepherds and various animals dot the scene.  Rocks  from the Holy Land are unique to the Nativity.  Also featured are rocks from places of war our soldiers fought to pay tribute to those servicemen who could not be home for Christmas over the years.  Most rocks are origin labeled.

COLBY — The Colby/Thomas County Chamber of Commerce shares that Tami Clymer, who has served as the president/CEO since 2016, has announced her resignation due to her husband’s illness. She plans to remain as active as she can during the transition, aiding the chamber board of directors with their search until they are able to find a permanent replacement.

During Clymer’s tenure, the chamber has seen growth with member enrollment, participation, and benefits, including the launch of a chamber-offered insurance program. Clymer has been an active part of many community conversations and endeavors, as well as with the chamber industry at a state and regional level.&nbsp;

“Under Tami Clymer’s leadership, the chamber has become a stronger entity impacting the local economy and the lives of so many,” said Board Chair Kaylin Wiens. “While we are sad she will be leaving this role, we understand it is in her best interest. We wish only the best to her and her family.”

In addition to Tami’s resignation, Wiens also noted a change with the interim leadership.&nbsp;

“In August, we hired Tammy Wellbrock to serve as interim president/CEO to help with office coverage during Tami Clymer’s absence for the remainder of the year. Tammy Wellbrock may continue to assist us on individual projects, but she will no longer serve in the interim capacity after December.

“The chamber board is appreciative of the leadership provided by both professionals, and they are leaving a strong organization founded on a successful past. Now our focus is to hire a new individual who can continue leading our chamber forward.”

Optimist Club sponsors Wednesday blood drive at Sternberg Museum

RUSSELL — Experience the true spirit of Christmas during the Live Drive-Thru Nativity presented by the middle and high school youth of St. John Lutheran Church, Russell. The nativity will bring Christ’s birth to life by using actors and animals. The drive-through aspect will make it convenient for people to experience.

“This is an easy way for people to come and see the nativity while they stay in the warmth of their car,” said Charlie Krug, St. John 425 Youth member. “The whole family can experience the Christmas story together.”

The Live Drive-Thru Nativity will be presented in the parking lot of Russell Livestock Commission, 720 S. Fossil, on Sunday, Dec. 19. Community members are invited to drive through the nativity scene between 6:30 and 8:00 pm. Once you enter the parking lot, be sure and open your windows to enjoy reflective Christmas music.

Kelvie Reeves, St. John 425 Youth member, is one of many volunteers organizing the event. 

“This live Nativity presentation is our gift to the community,” Reeves said. “We hope this small event will bring the spirit of hope, peace and joy to all.”

Although there is no admission fee, a freewill offering will be collected. The 425 Youth are fundraising for a upcoming trip to Manhattan to visit the KSU Campus Ministry and participate in a service project.
