The Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment has issued a Boil Water Advisory for Rural Water District 1c in Ellis County.

This includes the community of Antonino but does not include the city of Hays. This advisory is not related to COVID-19. Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice: &nbsp; * If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears. &nbsp; * Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water. &nbsp; * Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic ice maker. &nbsp; * Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water. &nbsp; * Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians. The advisory took effect on Monday and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved.

KDHE issued the advisory because of a loss of pressure in the system due to a scheduled valve replacement. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination. Regardless of whether the public water supplier or KDHE announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory. Board and staff members of nonprofit organizations in Northwest Kansas have an opportunity next month to improve their fundraising skills thanks to the Dane G. Hansen Foundation.

The Foundation is offering access to a four-part virtual course entitled “Raise Money: The Guide to Unapologetic Fundraising for Your Nonprofit” at no cost to any board or staff member of a nonprofit organization in the 26 counties it serves. A one-hour virtual coaching session will be held at 1:30 p.m. every Thursday in August. In addition, participants will have access to a library of fundraising videos full of tips and ideas that are practical and easy to implement.

The course and videos are by Nancy Jackson and Jenna Goodman, founders of Generous Change, a Lawrence-based company focused on assisting all kinds of nonprofit organizations and universities with fundraising.&nbsp;

The course will include a total of 20 videos, each with a “Do One Thing!” challenge. Jackson and Goodman will share new tools and tweaks to existing practices to make fundraising more fun and more effective. During the interactive coaching sessions, the two will answer questions and suggest solutions for tough fundraising challenges.

Module 1 covers fundraising fundamentals and how to make time for fundraising. Module 2 is about the art of conversation with donors. Module 3 addresses how to ask for support from different types of donors. Module 4 covers the need to plan and persist and includes step-by-step instructions for creating an annual fundraising plan.

Participants will also have ongoing access to the library of videos that address questions about development and working with donors.

Jackson and Goodman have a combined 30 years of fundraising experience. As staff and volunteers, they have personally raised more than $70 million for arts, education, and environmental causes.&nbsp;

Luray Community PRIDE Inc. has announced the 55th annual Luray Friendship Day event will be
held in downtown Luray on Sunday, Sep.5. Kicking it off is the Relay for Life lunch stand
opening up at 10:00am, the parade and car/truck and tractor show registration at 11:30am followed by
the parade at 1:00pm and the car/truck and tractor show at 2:00pm. The Luray Fire Department will be
hosting a Cornhole Tournament, registration starting after the parade and closing at 2:20pm,
tournament starting at 2:30pm (24 team limit).


Bring your family and friends to experience Luray Friendship Day with other activities including
inflatables, turtle races, face painting, trivia, a medallion hunt, kids tractor pedal pull (ages 4-13), laser
tag, beer garden, snow cones, car/truck and tractor show, 50/50 raffle, Luray Pride Train, Luray
Historical Society’s famous homemade ice cream, donation BBQ dinner at 5:00pm and special guest Kill

The Kansas Department of Transportation has started a field survey on a portion of K-383 in Norton and Phillips counties.

Crews are working along 13 miles of K-383 from Almena to near W 800 Road in Phillips County to update survey mapping and drainage structures. Activities will include the use of survey instruments on the ground to determine locations of existing features within the survey corridor. KDOT expects work to be complete by Oct. 1.

Crews will contact property owners or tenants for permission to enter private property if access is needed. Doug Roeder of Wilson and Co. will oversee the survey for KDOT.

On the date scheduled for treatment, all cars need to be moved from the street by 8 a.m. Streets being sealed will be closed from approximately 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Access can be achieved in cases of emergency. Parking on adjacent streets is recommended during the daytime. Parking in driveways is OK if you do not plan on moving the vehicle between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. 

Please have all lawn watering devices turned off the evening before the scheduled date. Please help keep the streets clean and dry for a smooth and lasting project. 

Notification of adjacent properties will be made door to door 24 hours in advance of the work. 

This project is scheduled to be completed within two weeks (pending weather conditions).

On Monday, construction will begin in Hays on Phase 2 of 230th Avenue and 55th Street intersection project, which consists of new curb and gutter, and concrete pavement for the intersection &nbsp;and 230th Avenue approximately ¼ mile north. &nbsp;

During Phase 2, 230th Avenue will be closed north of 55th Street for the remainder of the project. 

The only allowable movement through the intersection of 230th Avenue and 55th Street will be a right turn from northbound 230th to eastbound 55th Street.

The Hays Larks invites the public to the 12th annual Military Appreciation Night in conjunction with their game against Oklahoma City at 7 p.m. Saturday at Larks Park.  All active, reserve and retired military personnel are specially invited to attend and will be honored on the field during pregame ceremonies. The Ellis County 4-H Livestock Sale livestock purchaser’s meal&nbsp; will be at 5 p.m. Saturday at the&nbsp;Ellis County Fairgrounds. The sale will be at 6 p.m. also at the fairgrounds.

What is the livestock/grand champion auction?

The Ellis County 4-H Livestock Auction is when the animals the 4-Hers have raised and cared for are sold to the public. This is the final step in their projects where the educational aspects come to life. This is also where the grand champion and reserve champion food projects are sold. The sale will be Saturday, July 17, 2021, at the Ellis County Fairgrounds.

Why should I purchase an animal or food project?&nbsp;

You will receive personal satisfaction through:

Animals: Market beef, market swine, market lamb, meat goats, poultry and rabbits. Foods: The overall grand and reserve champion food projects, which could be anything ranging from breads to cookies.

Payment is due the day of the sale, made payable to Ellis County Fair. 

There are two plans from, which buyers may choose: Plan 1 Buy an animal through the sale for the market price, plus the premium price, and keep the project for a butcher animal. You must make arrangements with 4-H'er in regards to transportation to locker. If the animal is reserved to show, it will be delivered to you at a later date. Plan 2 Buy the animal and pay only the premium price. The animal will remain the responsibility of the 4-H member.

Please Note: Anyone may add on additional premium to a 4-H'er’s check by informing the clerk of the additional amount, with payment at the close of the sale.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded the stream advisory for the Paradise Creek, along the area east of Natoma near the wastewater treatment facility that was issued May 17.

Water samples show no health risk associated with the creek.

GREAT BEND - Bike Brew Q is holding its sixth annual event in support of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation on July 24 at the Great Bend Expo Complex. The event features three staples of summer: cycling, barbecue, and craft beer. Tickets for each event are sold separately so attendees only pay for the events they wish to participate in and are on sale now at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bikebrewq.com/" target="_blank">bikebrewq.com</a>. The Craft Brew Expo portion of Bike Brew Q will be from 1-4 p.m. Tickets are $35 and include a free, newly designed 20-ounce glass upon exit from the expo. Registration for the cycling event will begin at 6:30 a.m.&nbsp; The rides will start at 7:30 a.m.&nbsp; Riders will be able to choose from three different rides: a 20-mile road ride, a 40-mile road ride and a 62-mile (Metric Century) road ride and Mountain Bike Race held at Lake Barton. The event was founded by Ryan Fairchild of Great Bend as a way to raise money to find a cure for cystic fibrosis, a disease his cousin, brother-in-law, and wife suffer from.

“Cystic fibrosis isn’t a disease that gets a lot of attention or awareness and we have set out to change that,” he said. “Having raised over $50,000 for research with our past events, we feel we have done so. The secondary mission of Bike Brew Q is to bring a new element to summers in Central Kansas. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday than riding a bike, drinking craft beer, eating food from a food truck and supporting a great cause in doing so”

Nominations are now open for the second year of the program, and KDA anticipates new stories of outstanding service from across the Kansas agriculture community.

Kansas Ag Heroes was established as a way to recognize those in the agriculture industry who went above and beyond to serve others and better their community when it was needed most. KDA encourages Kansans to nominate any individual, family, or business in Kansas agriculture which you feel provided a notable contribution to the agriculture industry or their community as a whole this year. Concrete repairs begin to 500 block of E. 20th Street

Beginning Monday, HayMed will offer DOT Physicals at the Walk-In Clinic located at 3216 Vine, Suite 20, Big Creek Crossing in Hays.

The expanded hours at the walk-in clinic give more flexibility for those seeking a DOT physical.

“Sometimes 8 to 5 isn’t always an easy time to get DOT physicals.” Said Zena Jacobs, Physician Practice Operations Officer.&nbsp; “We are very pleased to be able to offer this service to the public.”

The walk-in clinic hours are Monday through Friday 8 am to 7:30 pm.&nbsp; Saturday from 9 am to 4:30 pm and Sunday from 11 am – 4 pm

announcing that an asphalt overlay project will take place between Butterfield
Trail and Spring Hill Road. 

The 800, 900 and 1000 blocks of 240th Avenue
between Butterfield Trail and Spring Hill Road will be closed to through
traffic as the project progresses. 

This project will begin at 7:30 a.m. on
Monday in the 800 block of 240th Avenue and will open and close as
the project progresses to the north. The estimated completion date is July
16, pending weather conditions. 

Motorists traveling in the affected closure
area should use alternate routes of travel until the project is completed.
