The Kansas Department of Transportation has started a project to repair two bridges along Interstate 70 in Trego County.

Crews are repairing the westbound and eastbound I-70 bridges located near Ogallah at exit 135. Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction through the construction zones with a decreased speed limit of 60 mph. Minor delays not exceeding 5 minutes should be anticipated. KDOT expects work to be completed by the end of August, weather permitting.

PCiRoads of Topeka is the primary contractor for the project with a total contract cost of approximately $570,000.&nbsp;

We need your input on identifying our community strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and priorities.&nbsp;This input will be used in preparing a housing assessment (the HAT - Housing Assessment Tool) for Victoria. The housing assessment is required for several funding applications with the Kansas Department of Commerce and Kansas Housing Corporation. The Society of Friends of Historic Fort Hays will offer a free-to-the-public, two-day encampment event to commemorate and celebrate local Fort Hays period history. “Historic Fort Hays Days: Where History Lives!” will be a celebration of culture and history on June 11-12, 2022 at the Historic Fort Hays Site at 1472 US Hwy 183 Alternate.

Planned activities for the two-day event and 19th&nbsp;Century festivities include period encampments of Cheyenne and Arapaho Nations, infantry soldiers, Buffalo Soldiers, scouts, historical figure portrayals, vintage dress-up photos, historical speakers under the Chautauqua-style tent, music, dancing, vintage baseball game, old time preaching on Sunday morning, and much more.

Historic Fort Hays Days announces schedule of events

WILSON LAKE — The Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wants park goers and the public to know that a military exercise will be partly taking place at Wilson Lake from Saturday through June 28, 2022.

The Kansas Air National Guard’s 184th Wing will conduct a military training exercise and will set up military equipment, tents and long-range communication systems on land near the Scenic Overlook or north Lucas Park. The purpose of the exercise is to test the operational readiness of the Airmen and equipment assigned to the unit.

Visitors at Wilson Lake can expect to see military vehicles, personnel and equipment. Visitors may experience road closures and some areas will be inaccessible to unauthorized personnel. Military personnel and equipment will not be staged on public campsites.&nbsp; No live ammunition or explosives will be involved although some blank ammunition may be used.

Campers may hear sirens, wavering tones and verbal communication through loudspeakers. The military camp will not be open to the public or on display for visitors during the exercise.

Wilson Lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District.

The Hays Larks are inviting everyone to the 14th annual Military Appreciation Night in conjunction with their game against the Boulder Collegians at 7 p.m. Saturday at Larks Park.  All active, reserve, and retired military personnel are specially invited to attend and will be honored on the field during pregame ceremonies. Military personnel will also be recognized after the 6th inning prior to the singing of "God Bless America." Military personnel in attendance should check in at the east side of the grandstand by 6:45 p.m. Saturday.

Fans are encouraged to be in the park by 6:50 p.m. to show their appreciation and support for all military personnel during pregame ceremonies. Those ceremonies will feature recognition of all military personnel in attendance, a Color Guard, and the national anthem sung live by Uncalled-4. Those in attendance will also enjoy patriotic music and a red, white, and blue decorated park throughout the evening.  Flags lining the park will be provided courtesy of American Legion Riders Post #173 of Hays, KS. Free admission to the game will be provided courtesy of the Hays VFW Post 9076, VFW Auxiliary, and Kiwanis Club of Hays.

🎥 CVB: Summer fun kicks off this month in Hays

Families with students entering kindergarten through eighth grade may qualify for scholarships to attend Holy Family Elementary or Thomas More Prep-Marian.

These scholarships are provided by the Catholic Diocese of Salina through its Scholarship Granting Organization.

Qualified students must be new to Hays Catholic Schools and in their first year attending any grade from kindergarten through eighth.

Also, the students need to qualify as free or reduced-cost in the federal lunch program.

For those students entering kindergarten, they must be less than 6 years old by the first day of school.

If a student qualifies, they may be able to receive the scholarship each year they attend all the way through to high school graduation.

KAYS Summer Music Showdown underway

Youth girls basketball camp offered by TMP-Marian June 20-23

Beginning Tuesday, the city’s contractor will begin 
reconstructing the north side of 27th Street between Lincoln Drive and 
Fort Street. &nbsp;

During this phase of construction, traffic will be 
switched onto the new pavement along the south side of 27th Street and 
will be one-way eastbound. &nbsp;

This phase of construction is expected to take about two months.&nbsp;&nbsp;

BATON ROUGE, La. — The following people recently were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

They are among approximately 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 under the leadership of undergraduate student Marcus L. Urann who had a desire to create a different kind of honor society: one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines. Today, the Society has chapters on more than 325 campuses in the United States, its territories and the Philippines. Its mission is "To recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others."

Five from Fort Hays State inducted into national honor society

KANSAS CITY – Kansas State Parks are partnering with the Kansas Public Library System to&nbsp;provide&nbsp;library patrons with daily vehicle permits&nbsp;available for checkout through December 2022. The daily vehicle permits provide the permit holder with admission to any of Kansas’ 28 state parks absolutely free of charge.

Northwest Kansas participating libraries include:

“We’re committed to making sure Kansas state parks remain accessible to all,” said Kansas State Parks director Linda Lanterman. “Through this collaborative effort with Kansas Public Libraries, we’re able to remove a financial barrier for some who may not have been able to enjoy our natural resources otherwise. I’m excited for the individuals and families who will benefit from this, because they won’t regret making the trip to a Kansas state park.”

Libraries interested in participating should contact program coordinators Riston Landwehr at&nbsp;<a href="mailto:riston.landwehr@ks.gov" target="_blank">riston.landwehr@ks.gov</a>&nbsp;or Kati Westerhaus at&nbsp;<a href="mailto:kati.westerhaus@ks.gov" target="_blank">kati.westerhaus@ks.gov</a>. NW Kan. library partnerships offer free state park passes

WICHITA —&nbsp;Households seeking food assistance have a much easier way to find help thanks to a project supported by the Sunflower Foundation.&nbsp;

A new website&nbsp;-&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kansasfoodsource.org/" target="_blank">www.kansasfoodsource.org</a>&nbsp;-&nbsp;is designed to help people in need of food assistance find pantry locations&nbsp;in their areas.&nbsp; The website also features a link for help applying for SNAP&nbsp;(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)&nbsp;or food stamps,&nbsp;along with a link for upcoming summer food sites for children.&nbsp;

The website&nbsp;lists pantries that are partner agencies of the three food banks that serve Kansas:&nbsp; Kansas Food Bank, Harvesters - The Community Food Network and Second Harvest Community Food Bank.&nbsp; In addition, pantries that are not a part of the food bank network are included along with TEFAP&nbsp;(The Emergency Food Assistance Program)&nbsp;sites –&nbsp;these are&nbsp;often referred to as government commodities supported by the USDA.&nbsp;

By breaking everything down to the county level, the new website features a mapping tool which allows a resident to see exactly where&nbsp;each&nbsp;pantry is located,&nbsp;along with a contact phone number and any other information&nbsp;available,&nbsp;such as hours of operation or what is needed to access food.&nbsp;

The website is easily accessible from a mobile device or desktop computer.&nbsp; It is geared not only towards food insecure households, but also schools, social workers, case managers, medical professionals and anyone who is trying to find resources for people they are helping.

The three food banks serving Kansas collaborate together on efforts to fight hunger across our great state.&nbsp; This website is one of the many ways that together we can ensure our food insecure&nbsp;have access to nutritious foods.&nbsp;&nbsp;
