Humane Society of The High Plains&nbsp;is conducting a shoe&nbsp;drive from Jan. 10 to March 10 to raise funds for medical care for the animals that come into us.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Humane Society of the High Plains&nbsp;organization will earn funds based on the&nbsp;total&nbsp;weight&nbsp;of the shoes&nbsp;collected&nbsp;as Funds2Orgs will purchase all&nbsp;of the donated&nbsp;footwear. &nbsp;Those dollars will benefit multiple animals in our care. Anyone can&nbsp;help by donating gently worn, used&nbsp;or new shoes&nbsp;at the Humane Society or the Hays Public Library.

All donated shoes will&nbsp;then&nbsp;be redistributed&nbsp;throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in&nbsp;developing nations. &nbsp;Funds2Orgs&nbsp;helps impoverished people&nbsp;start, maintain and grow&nbsp;businesses&nbsp;in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other&nbsp;nations&nbsp;in Central America and Africa.&nbsp;Proceeds&nbsp;from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe&nbsp;and house their&nbsp;families.&nbsp;One&nbsp;budding entrepreneur in Haiti&nbsp;even earned enough to send to her son to law school.

“We are excited&nbsp;about our&nbsp;shoe drive," said Sierra Diehl, President of the Board of Directors . "We know that&nbsp;most people have&nbsp;extra shoes&nbsp;in their closets&nbsp;they would like donate&nbsp;to us&nbsp;and help&nbsp;those less fortunate become self-sufficient. &nbsp;It’s a win-win for everyone,”&nbsp;added&nbsp;Sierra.

On farms large and small across the state of Kansas, the number of women involved in decision making on farms and ranches is growing. Against that backdrop and especially in view of the ups and downs of the farm economy, Kansas State University and the Cottonwood Extension District will host two sites for the series of workshops focused on helping women sharpen their risk management skills.

The K-State Research and Extension, Cottonwood District, program will run as a series, so each evening session builds on material from the previous sessions. Participants register at a cost of $50 for the entire series. The fee covers all meals and program materials. &nbsp;

The sessions, all on Wednesdays, are scheduled on January 12, January 19, January 26 and February 2, with an optional session on February 23, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm and will be held in Hays, at the Extension Office meeting room, 601 Main Street and in Great Bend at American Ag Credit, 5634 10th Street. The sessions will feature a combination of broadcasted keynote speakers as well as local speakers.&nbsp;

The registration deadline has been extended to Friday, January 7 on-line at <a href="http://www.agmanager.info">www.agmanager.info</a> under “events” or contact the Hays office 785-628-9430 or Great Bend 620-793-1910.&nbsp;

Topics will include Enterprise Budgets (determining cost of production), Crop Insurance, Stress and Resiliency, Crop Marketing, Family Communication, Farm Bill programs and Cow/Calf enterprise budget.&nbsp; &nbsp;

More than 25,500 women are decision makers on Kansas farms. They farm more than 14 million acres, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Census of Agriculture. Overall, in 2017, 36% of all agricultural producers across the country were women, up from 31.5% in 2012. Fifty-six percent of farms had at least one female decision maker.

“Women in agriculture will be specifically targeted for these workshops,” said Stacy Campbell and Alicia Boor, Crop and Livestock Agents with the Cottonwood District and K-State Research and Extension. “They tend to be an underserved demographic, but many times are involved or solely making the risk management tasks for the operation. By teaching them the necessary skills for helping to complete enterprise budgets, making crop insurance decisions, helping to relieve farm family stress, along with understanding the farm bill programs.”

The program is supported by the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture through North-Central Extension Risk Management Education.

LACROSSE — K-State Research and Extension recognizes the uncertainty that farmers and ranchers are experiencing due to fluctuating grain and input prices.&nbsp; More than ever, risk management of the operation is critical to long-term sustainability.

Starting Jan. 12, this <a href="https://agmanager.info/events/risk-management-skills-kansas-women-agriculture">workshop series</a> will teach principles of determining cost of production, developing a marketing plan, purchasing crop insurance, and participating in farm programs (ARC/PLC). Participants will work with a case farm to apply these topics to a real-world farming operation. The goal is for participants to acquire risk management skills they can apply directly to their own farming operations. Other special topics will include managing stress and being resilient in tough times, and communicating effectively with family members.

The program will be offered statewide, including in La Crosse and Hays, with a combination of broadcasted keynote speakers, local speakers, and facilitators to assist in completing the hands-on activities.

An optional fifth session will cover similar risk management principles for beef cow/calf operations.

Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas will be getting new automated external defibrillators (AEDs) thanks to a $7,200 grant from the Heartland Community Foundation. The AEDs will be utilized in four of its residential living locations in Ellis County that serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The AEDs will allow DSNWK staff to be better equipped for cardiac arrest-type situations should they occur. Having AEDs in all DSNWK locations helps increase the ability to implement EMS advice on-site to save the life of someone as they wait for an emergency responder to arrive on scene. All DSNWK staff are trained to use the AED devices through its staff training program.

“DSNWK hopes never to be put into a situation where an AED is needed,” states Jerry Michaud, DSNWK President.&nbsp; “This grant will help us secure these life sustaining devices.&nbsp; With them we are better prepared for these time sensitive situations with the right equipment to ensure the best care and response, especially as our population continues to age.” &nbsp;

DSNWK is a 501(c)3 nonprofit serving 18 counties in northwest Kansas with a mission to advocate for persons with disabilities and those who care about them by planning and supporting a life of dignity, interdependence, and personal satisfaction in the community. &nbsp;

City of Hays offices closed in celebration of New Year's Day

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded a boil water advisory for the city of Schoenchen public water supply system, located in Ellis County. The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure due to a water main break. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the City of Schoenchen indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

Wildfire recovery meeting set in Natoma

Throughout the days of December 15 – 17, the Ellis County Fire Department spent approximately 1,711 working hours between 77 firefighters on scene, extinguishing the wildfires in Ellis County. 

During those days approximately 55,424 acres of grasslands burned, and unfortunately, 10 homes, 17 other structures, and a business burned down which has impacted many families and their livelihoods. 

During those days, so many people showed their support not just to those who had lost everything, but also to the firefighters of the Ellis County Fire Department. 

We have tried to create a list to thank everyone who helped in so many ways. Some have asked to not be mentioned but thank you as well as you know who you are.&nbsp;

Our deepest thank you for your support to the Ellis County Fire Department to the following:

to the free disposal site located north of the Public Works building at 
1002 Vine Street. &nbsp;This area is right next to the bathrooms at Speier 
ball fields. &nbsp;Place the trees on the east side of the bathrooms.

 will be posted to direct citizens. &nbsp;Please remove all plastic, 
ornaments and lights before leaving the tree. &nbsp;The disposal site will be
 open though Monday, Jan. 10. &nbsp;

Midwest
 Energy will provide personnel and a wood chipper to chip the trees to 
make mulch. &nbsp;The mulch will be placed at the Parks Department on the 183
 Bypass and is available for pickup free of charge.

Boil order issued for rural Osborne County water district

For some, 2021 has been filled with darkness. You may have lost a loved one and are still coping with that death. Maybe you are living with the diagnosis of cancer or some other medical condition that puts a question mark over the future. Others may be dealing with a divorce or a shattered relationship, living with a difficult work situation, struggling to conceive a baby, living with loneliness and isolation, or experiencing financial difficulties. Or perhaps this season is a time that is difficult for other reasons.

For many people, the approaching Christmas holiday does not bring with it the joy and happiness that is depicted in movies or in greeting cards. Typical holiday festivities—caroling, decorating, buying gifts, Christmas parties, family gatherings—leave little room for feelings of pain or grief, and we experience feelings of isolation. Our spirits sink as the days grow shorter. We feel the darkness growing deeper around us.&nbsp;

In response, the Parish Nurse Ministry offers The Longest Night Service, offering a somber, gentle space for the community to gather on the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. The service is simple: candles are lit, scripture is read, and the focus is on personal needs in an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. This non-denominational worship experience is a way to acknowledge the reality of difficult or painful life circumstances, while still recognizing that part of the reason for Jesus’ coming was to bring hope and comfort, to heal the sick, to seek the lost, to restore the broken and broken-hearted. This is a quiet meditative time for remembering, sharing our hurting places with God, and preparing our hearts for the coming of Christ.

Those who do experience this season as a happy time can also find meaning in The Longest Night Service, as it serves as a time of quiet retreat from the hectic nature of the commercial aspect of the season and guides worshippers back to the real meaning of Christmas.

The Longest Night Service will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 338 N. 7th St. in WaKeeney. The service will be followed by an opportunity to pray or meditate in the sanctuary for those who wish to do so.  </figure>News releaseFor some, 2021 has been filled with darkness. You may have lost a loved one and are still coping with that death. Maybe you are living with the diagnosis of cancer or some other medical condition that puts a question mark over the future. Others may be dealing with a divorce or a shattered relationship, living with a difficult work situation, struggling to conceive a baby, living with loneliness and isolation, or experiencing financial difficulties. Or perhaps this season is a time that is difficult for other reasons.For many people, the approaching Christmas holiday does not bring with it the joy and happiness that is depicted in movies or in greeting cards. Typical holiday festivities—caroling, decorating, buying gifts, Christmas parties, family gatherings—leave little room for feelings of pain or grief, and we experience feelings of isolation. Our spirits sink as the days grow shorter. We feel the darkness growing deeper around us.&nbsp;In response, the Parish Nurse Ministry offers The Longest Night Service, offering a somber, gentle space for the community to gather on the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. The service is simple: candles are lit, scripture is read, and the focus is on personal needs in an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. This non-denominational worship experience is a way to acknowledge the reality of difficult or painful life circumstances, while still recognizing that part of the reason for Jesus’ coming was to bring hope and comfort, to heal the sick, to seek the lost, to restore the broken and broken-hearted. This is a quiet meditative time for remembering, sharing our hurting places with God, and preparing our hearts for the coming of Christ.Those who do experience this season as a happy time can also find meaning in The Longest Night Service, as it serves as a time of quiet retreat from the hectic nature of the commercial aspect of the season and guides worshippers back to the real meaning of Christmas.The Longest Night Service will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 338 N. 7th St. in WaKeeney. The service will be followed by an opportunity to pray or meditate in the sanctuary for those who wish to do so.
