The Ellis County Landfill is announcing that the Construction &amp; Demolition pit, tree pile, and dirt pile at the landfill are closed Friday November 21, 2025, due to the soaking rain and muddy conditions. These materials will not be accepted in Municipal Waste.

We will re-evaluate the conditions at noon today. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Today, the Hays Post is accepting non-perishable food donations and cash from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. to benefit the Community Assistance Center in Hays.

We have the big, red radio station truck out front, 2300 Hall.

Simply drop your donation off in the back of the truck, and we'll deliver it to the Community Assistance Center at 1 p.m. this afternoon.

If you have a cash donation, please bring it into the radio station.

First Call for Help of Ellis County is planning its annual “Homes 4 The Holidays Carnival Night” for children.

 While the event is especially geared for ages 2 to 12, “any ages are welcome as we will have games and concessions, too,” said Macey Pfeifer, First Call’s executive director.

The fundraising event will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at the Hays Recreation Commission, 1105 Canterbury Dr. The night will also include inflatables and raffle prizes, Pfeifer said.

The cost is $10 per wristband or a maximum cost of $25 for families with three or more children. Only cash and Venmo will be accepted for payment. Concessions will be available for purchase.

 All participants must wear socks, Pfeifer said. Socks will be available for purchase for those who forget to wear them.

“Proceeds from this event will directly support individuals and families in securing safe, stable housing by covering the first month’s rent and/or deposit costs.&nbsp;Many people are currently living in unsafe or unhealthy conditions but are unable to move simply because they can’t afford the upfront costs required,” Pfeifer said.

“Our goal is to be a helping hand—removing that financial barrier and ensuring those in need have the opportunity to transition into a safer, more livable home where they can begin to rebuild and thrive.”

Helping with the event is a team of Leadership 310 students from Fort Hays State University. They are Mika Zimmerman, Hays junior; Matthew Berner, Hays junior; Thomas Pendergast, Hays sophomore; Anthony Arial, Hays junior; and Sabrina Adkins, Hays junior.

Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, Nov. 2, and the American Red Cross encourages everyone to test their smoke alarms as they&nbsp;turn their clocks back to make sure the devices are working.

“Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half as you only have about two minutes to safely get out,” said Jane Blocher, Executive Director of the Red Cross of Greater Kansas. “Every second counts when there’s a home fire and the sooner an alarm alerts you to a fire, the sooner you can get to a safer place. This year, local Red Cross volunteers responded to help over 500 people in Greater Kansas affected by 150 home fires, which account for most of the about 65,000 disasters that the Red Cross responds to annually across the country.

MANHATTAN — Halloween's tricks and treats can be frighteningly risky for pets, but a few simple precautions can keep them safe during the holiday festivities.

"There are many hazards associated with Halloween," said Susan Nelson, clinical professor and veterinarian in the Kansas State University&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://ksvhc.org/services/pet-health-center/">Hill's Pet Health and Nutrition Center</a>. "From candy and costumes to spooky decorations, these things can pose real dangers to our pets. By planning ahead, we can help them stay safe and stress-free."

Keep candy and other spooky treats out of reach

Nelson encourages pet owners to keep all candy out of reach. Chocolate, xylitol and other artificial sweeteners, raisins, and certain nuts can be toxic to pets or cause gastrointestinal blockages and injuries.

Moldy pumpkins should be discarded promptly to prevent pets from eating them and becoming ill.

Keep pets away from electrical cords,&nbsp;<a>candles</a>&nbsp;and decorations — like glow sticks — to prevent injuries or accidental ingestion.

Costumes can also pose hazards. Nelson suggests choosing pet-friendly outfits that avoid small or loose decorations that could be swallowed and cause obstructions."

Owners should try costumes on their pets in advance," she said. "If a costume makes them stressed or restricts their ability to see, hear, smell or breathe, it should be skipped altogether. Consider opting for a simple Halloween-themed bandana instead. This is a fun and safe alternative."

Pets may become frightened by even their own family members in costume. To help them feel at ease, consider letting the pets see and smell the costume in advance.

Consider your pet's needs during trick-or-treating time

Keeping pets calm during trick-or-treating is also important. If your pet becomes anxious with strangers, children in costumes or frequent doorbell sounds, secure them in a quiet room.

Consider greeting trick-or-treaters at the end of the driveway — weather permitting — or temporarily disconnecting the doorbell to avoid constant ringing. Keep pets indoors on Halloween night, especially black cats, which can be targeted for pranks.

Owners should also ensure that pets wear ID tags or have a microchip, ideally with a reflective collar, Nelson said."

Halloween should be fun for the whole family — including pets," Nelson said. "A little extra caution can help prevent an emergency and make the holiday more enjoyable for everyone."

Meis brings extensive experience in nonprofit leadership, higher education, and youth programming, with a career dedicated to advancing opportunities for young people and strengthening Kansas communities.

Prior to joining Nex-Generation, Meis spent 10 years at Fort Hays State University, including two and a half years with the FHSU Alumni Association and the remainder as Communications Specialist in the Office of the President. Before her time at the university, she served 15 years as the State Director for Kansas CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), where she led statewide efforts supporting volunteers who advocate for children in the foster care system.

“I’m thrilled to join an organization that’s making such a tangible difference in the lives of rural youth,” said Meis. “Nex-Generation’s programs open doors for young people to explore careers, build real-world skills, and envision a future right here in Northwest and North Central Kansas. Due to the observance of the Veteran’s Day, Tuesday, November 11, 2025, refuse/recycling route collection schedules in Hays will be altered as follows: Monday, November 10 and Tuesday, November 11 will both be picked up on Monday, November 10.

Refuse/recycling collection in Hays changed due to Veterans Day 

Two Hays churches will host Trunk or Treat events for children and their families, but on different nights.

First United Methodist Church, 305 W. Seventh, will have its annual Trunk or Treat from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29. The event will be held in the church parking lot off Eighth Street.

Matt Dumler, the church’s Director of Discipleship, said there will be lots of candy available for kids, and the Local Food Truck will be on site for those wishing to purchase dinner.

In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved inside the church, Dumler said.

North Oak Community Church, 3000 Oak St., will hold its Trunk or Treat from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, in the church parking lot.

The Rev. Dustin Mulkey, Youth Pastor, said that the family-friendly event will feature carnival-style games, candy for the kids, inflatables, and a free meal of pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, and cookies for all attendees.

Mulkey said, “We will be accepting non-perishable food items that will go toward the North Oak Food Pantry.”

In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved inside the church, he said.

 </figure>Submitted Two Hays churches will host Trunk or Treat events for children and their families, but on different nights.First United Methodist Church, 305 W. Seventh, will have its annual Trunk or Treat from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29. The event will be held in the church parking lot off Eighth Street.Matt Dumler, the church’s Director of Discipleship, said there will be lots of candy available for kids, and the Local Food Truck will be on site for those wishing to purchase dinner.In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved inside the church, Dumler said.North Oak Community Church, 3000 Oak St., will hold its Trunk or Treat from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, in the church parking lot.The Rev. Dustin Mulkey, Youth Pastor, said that the family-friendly event will feature carnival-style games, candy for the kids, inflatables, and a free meal of pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, and cookies for all attendees.Mulkey said, “We will be accepting non-perishable food items that will go toward the North Oak Food Pantry.”In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved inside the church, he said.

Two Hays churches set Trunk or Treats

The Kiwanis Club of Hays is pleased to announce information about the annual Veterans, Military, Active Duty, Reservists, and Guardsmen Appreciation Lunch.

The event will be held on Thursday, November 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Rose Garden Banquet Hall &amp; Catering, 2350 E.&nbsp; 8th.

 All veterans, active-duty military, reservists, and national guardsmen are invited to attend. 

Lunch will be free of charge and courtesy of the Kiwanis Club of Hays. The meal will include fried chicken with choice of honey pecan sauce or gravy, potatoes, vegetable, side salad, roll, and dessert.

Music will be provided by students from TMP-Marian Jr./Sr. High School, and a special thank you video will be provided by students from Hays Middle School. Some of Wilson Elementary’s 5th graders will also be present to help serve and honor the heroes with thank you cards. Singers will provide patriotic music, and a service photo presentation will be shared during the event.
