What happens when a holiday show becomes the only hope to keep a theater alive? Hays Community Theatre explores that high-stakes tale in its newest production.

Cheryl Glassman, writer and director,&nbsp; said the original play is a “show within a show” that follows a cast working under pressure to keep their theater from closing.

"It follows the pursuits of the Gretchen, the director, and the entire cast," Glassman said. "Characters provide comedy, sentimental structure and share candid life moments."

Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 2 p.m. Saturday at 121 E. Eighth St.

A bake sale at the theater will also raise funds for the family of Hays Police Sgt. Scott Heinmann, who was recently killed in the line of duty, and to the Lohrmeyer family, who recently lost their home in a fire.

Glassman said the production includes 26 performers,  including 13 children, some of whom are first-time actors. 

Glassman said she drew inspiration from her own theater experience and the many personalities she has worked with behind the scenes while creating productions.

"There's an interesting woman named Marvel, portrayed by Wendy Richmeier, and no one likes her at all. She thinks she's better than the rest of the cast," Glassman said. "I have dealt with people like that in real life before."

The cast includes Claire Nickerson as Gretchen, Gene Stramel as Miles, Kelsey Robben as Mary, Adam Conkey as Marty and Jeremy McGuire as Joe.

Glassman said the stage will feature 3D backdrop elements, including a built-in couch and Christmas tree. While props will be limited to keep attention on the actors, audiences can expect festive costumes throughout the show.

Glassman said she hopes audiences leave with a reminder to look beyond difficult times.&nbsp;

"It's OK to be frustrated, but being frustrated doesn't mean you have to stay there. You never really know what's going on around you until you open up and look at the big picture... seeing past yourself and knowing that there is a lot more to life than meets the eye," she said.

Glassman said the production will also feature some original songs she wrote and seven dancers from Spotlight Studios dance school in Hays. Auditions began in October with rehearsals starting after Halloween.&nbsp;

Hays Community Theatre presents 'A Down Home Christmas' tonight through Saturday

The Ellis County unemployment numbers for September dropped almost a half a point from August from 3.4% to 3%.

Ellis County's jobless rate is almost a point below the state average.

The release of the unemployment data was delayed because of the federal government shutdown.

Graham and Lane Counties had jobless rates of 4.1%, but the rest of the northwest Kansas counties all have unemployment rates below 4%.

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8% statewide in September. 

This is unchanged from 3.8% in August and unchanged from 3.8% in September 2024. The labor force participation rate for Kansas increased to 67.1% in September.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 300 from August. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 2,000 over the month, while government increased by 1,700. The largest job gains in the private sector were in&nbsp;financial activities&nbsp;(+600 jobs). The largest decrease was in professional and business services&nbsp;(-2,300 jobs).

Since September 2024, Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have decreased by 1,700. This change is due to a decrease of 2,500 private sector jobs and an increase of 800 government jobs.

Technical Note: This release includes nonfarm jobs and labor force estimates for September 2025, which are produced using data from two monthly surveys. Data for nonfarm job estimates is collected through a survey of employers, while the main input for labor force estimates is a survey of households. Data collected for this report references the week including Sept. 12.

The 16th annual Community Christmas Dinner will be held on Christmas Day, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the VFW in&nbsp;Hays, located at 22nd &amp; Vine.&nbsp;

The meal will consist of roast beef, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, a dinner roll, dessert, and&nbsp;is free of charge. 

Donations received will be used to cover expenses and any extra will be given to area organizations that serve and assist residents, in an effort to 'give back' all that has been given.&nbsp;

The Community Christmas Dinner began with the vision to bring the community together for a Christmas meal, and to return to the true reason for the season - the remembrance and celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas can quickly become overshadowed by the busyness that tends to arise with the holiday season, and focus loss regarding the true meaning. 

The Community Christmas Dinner offers a time to refocus on the birth of Christ, provides the opportunity for community members to serve/be served, and simply enjoy each other's company. Though Jesus is celebrated all are welcome regardless of personal beliefs.

&nbsp;Service also extends beyond the walls of the VFW through the delivery of meals to those who are homebound.&nbsp;The Community Christmas Dinner stands upon the scripture that “Love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:8), and has continued to be an example of this kind of love throughout the years.

Volunteer opportunities will be available on Christmas Day prior to the meal, during the meal, and after. Some of the opportunities include decorating, directing traffic, preparing to-go boxes for delivery, filling drinks, clearing tables, delivering meals, washing dishes, cleaning after the event, and other miscellaneous tasks that arise.&nbsp;

I know some might think, heavens no, December doesn’t need another holiday. After all, it has Christmas and New Year’s Eve, but those living in deer country need to make opening day of firearms deer season the kind of holiday that frees kids from school and employees from work. Even for those who don’t hunt, advantages exist.

For families that put wholesome meat on the table the old-fashioned way, the first Wednesday in December is a red-letter calendar date. It signals opportunities for every licensed hunter in the house to provide pure, unadulterated protein for loved ones. Diners who eat venison harvested in the wild consume meat produced by natural diets. Protein in this form is low in fat so it’s better for folks whose docs have told them to cut back on marbled beef.

Family hunts build bonds between spouses and among parents and children or grandparents and grandchildren. Spending time on a frosty morning waiting to see a healthy buck or doe pass forms memories and stories that liven up family gatherings for decades. The meat in the freezer may be long gone, but tales of making difficult shots or recovering a deer from a field far from the road make great fireside tales year after year.

Not only do such events create family legends, they enable experienced outdoors folk to teach patience, observational skills, and respect for nature and gifts it provides. Youngsters too young to carry a gun learn to sit quietly while waiting for game to come into range. Every hunt includes lessons from studying wind patterns to discovering how still and silent a person can be when a skunk wanders near the blind.

Once a successful hunt ends, family bonding and learning continue as youngsters help prepare for the butchering. Much of my understanding of anatomy occurred as I helped first my dad then my husband cut up deer meat. Helping field dress a fresh carcass made high school biology dissections seem easier. These experiences gave me an appreciation for where protein comes that helps me better understand when I buy shrink-wrapped packages from a grocery store meat case.

For non-hunters and vegetarians, reducing deer populations through controlled harvests lead to safer driving. In addition, managing populations improves herd health. Too many critters occupying an area not only makes driving dangerous, it also means more depredation on crops and native plants. A pitiful sight for any who have experienced it is a sick herd. In regions where residents discourage hunting, disease whittles populations in only a few seasons.

While the idea of an official holiday is tongue in cheek, I love hearing stories from families that make this day and the rest of the season an annual event. Not only do these folks reduce deer populations that make driving to work a game of real-life pinball with the car as the flicker and the deer as the puck, but they also strengthen family bonds, provide healthy protein, and teach respect for nature

Missouri woman arrested for alleged battery, dispute over hotel breakfast in Hays

The Hays City Commission will vote on two ordinances to issue industrial revenue bonds for business expansions on Thursday.

Agiliti, a medical equipment manufacturer on South Commerce Parkway, plans to buy, renovate, and expand its campus buildings. The company will add a total of 140 new jobs in phases to the current 91 positions.

The utilization of industrial revenue bonds, which have no taxpayer commitment, allows a property tax abatement for up to 10 years for the $6.55-million project.

The new location of Vernie's Trux-N-Equip is on six acres northwest of the&nbsp;intersection of 48th Street and General Hays Road, the site of the former Hays Livestock sales barn.

The developer is asking for the issuance of industrial revenue bonds for the $2.2-million project. No property tax abatement is requested. A&nbsp;community improvement district is also being sought.

Construction engineering services contract

The commission will also vote on a bid from  Driggs Design Group for the Interstate 70, Exit 161, infrastructure project. Driggs had the low bid of $38,632. The project will be funded from general obligation bonds.

The initial new infrastructure would serve about 11 buildable lots, ranging in size from 2 to 8 acres, for commercial and residential development on the city-owned 90-acre property.

Commissioners approved a contract on Nov. 25 with Smoky Hill, LLC, Salina, to build the infrastructure, which includes&nbsp;extending water and sewer mains to the property as well as the construction of internal roads, water/sewer service lines, stormwater infrastructure, and intersection and roadway improvements to 27th Street and Commerce Parkway.

Following a review of its 2025 pool season operation, the Hays Recreation Commission requested a 50% reimbursement for its operating loss, as outlined in the pool services agreement with the city. City commissioners will vote on paying $25,501 to the recreation commission from the 2025 General Fund Pool Budget.

Commissioners will consider re-appointment of Hays resident Hali Bielser to the CARE Council for a second two-year term.

Approval of the 2026 cereal malt beverage city licenses for several businesses will be voted on.&nbsp;

This festive event, a national tradition since 1974, celebrates the holiday spirit by gathering local players of all ages and skill levels to perform classic Christmas carols. From seasoned professionals to enthusiastic beginners, the concert showcases the rich, resonant sounds of these low brass instruments in a unique and heartwarming display.

The Hays Tuba Christmas group will be performing at the Big Creek Crossing Mall at 3 p.m. Dec. 14. Twenty-five to 30 tuba and baritone players participate in this event every year. Hays is one of many international TubaChristmas concerts held annually. Jim Tanis is the coordinator for the event. Traditional Christmas Carols will be presented at this 45-minute concert. Low brass players from area high schools, colleges as well as adults participate in this ensemble.

Our group is under the leadership of Peter Lillpopp, the director of bands at Fort Hays State University. At FHSU, he directs the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, Hays City Band, and the FHSU Tiger Marching Band. He also teaches the Low Brass Studio and directs the Low Brass Choir.

This concert is free and open to the public.

Graduates who have chosen to participate in person will be honored in two ceremonies on Friday at Gross Memorial Coliseum (GMC). All graduates will be recognized in two virtual ceremonies on Saturday.

FHSU fall commencement set for Dec. 12, 13

The United Way of Ellis County announces the opening of the 2026 CARE Council application process.

The application deadline has been extended to Dec. 19.

Any&nbsp;501(c)(3) that provides services in Ellis County is eligible to apply. The services must meet one of the three&nbsp;criteria of education, health, and financial stability.

The CARE Council is made up of 12 community volunteers who review the applications to determine funding for&nbsp;the United Way of Ellis County, City of Hays social service funds and alcohol tax funds, and Ellis County&nbsp;alcohol tax funds.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;announced Wednesday that his long-promised “&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/investor-visas-trump-immigration-eb5-gold-cards-cdb943dd1633bc234bb715fa20914e05">gold card</a>&nbsp;” was officially going on sale, offering legal status and an eventual pathway to U.S. citizenship for individuals paying $1 million and corporations ponying up twice that per foreign-born employee.

A website accepting applications went live as Trump revealed the start of the program while surrounded by business leaders in the White House’s Roosevelt Room. It is meant to replace EB-5 visas, which Congress created in 1990 to generate foreign investment and had been available to people who spend about $1 million on a company that employs at least 10 people.

Trump sees the new version as a way for the U.S. to attract and retain top talent, all while generating revenue for federal coffers. He’s been promoting the gold card program for months, and once suggested that each card would cost $5 million, though he more recently revised that to the $1 million and $2 million pricing scheme.

The president said all funds taken in as part of the program will “go to the U.S. government” and predicted that billions would flow into an account run by the Treasury Department “where we can do things positive for the country.”

The new program is actually a green card, effectively offering permanent legal residency with the chance for citizenship.

“Basically, it’s a green card but much better,” Trump said. “Much more powerful, a much stronger path.”

The president made no mention of requirements for job creation for applying corporations or on overall caps on the program, which exist under the current EB-5 program. Instead, he said he’d heard complaints from business leaders who had been unable to recruit outstanding graduates from U.S. universities because they were from other countries and lacked permission to stay.

“You can’t hire people from the best colleges because you don’t know whether or not you can keep the person,” Trump said.

Trump has built his political career around clamping down on the U.S.-Mexico border and championing hard-line immigration policies. His second administration spent its first 10-plus months launching&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-veterans-mass-deportation-5aa133955c5d378ac59da991b4ff5693">mass deportation pushes</a>&nbsp;and sweeping immigration crackdowns that have targeted cities including&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-immigration-stops-los-angeles-trump-57cc1f85ceafda0f11052b326c8b7173">Los Angeles</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/charlotte-immigration-arrests-new-orleans-trump-dc93314147e67a7642a429b228676766">Charlotte</a>.

But he’s also&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-maga-foreign-workers-training-americans-4eef9dbcbff4f4447105f52f50e33a9c">drawn criticism</a>&nbsp;from leading voices of his “Make America Great Again” movement for repeatedly suggesting that skilled immigrants should be allowed into the U.S. — something the gold card program could facilitate.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the program will include $15,000 for applicant vetting and that the thorough process used to scrutinize backgrounds would ”make sure these people absolutely qualify to be in America.” Companies will be able to receive multiple cards, but will be limited to one individual per card, he said.

Lutnick also said the current green card holders earn less money than the average American, and that Trump wanted to change that.

“So, same visas, but now just full of the best people,” Lutnick said.

Investors’ visas are common around the world, with dozens of countries offering versions of “golden visas” to wealthy individuals, including the United Kingdom, Spain, Greece, Malta, Australia, Canada and Italy.

Trump said the program means the U.S. is “getting somebody great coming into our country because we think these will be some tremendous people” and singled out top U.S. college graduates from China, India and France as among those who will possibly be receiving gold cards.

“The companies are going to be very happy,” he said.

SEDGWICK COUNTY— A man convicted&nbsp; of killing two people in a parking garage in&nbsp;Old Town in Wichita will learn his fate Wednesday.

Judge Faith Johnson will sentence 21-year-old Zachary Ramirez for the deaths of&nbsp;20-year-old Josephina Lerma-Dominguez and 21-year-old Bryan Lara-Hernandez both of Wichita,&nbsp; according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office.

In April of 2024, a jury found him guilty&nbsp;&nbsp;on two counts of first-degree murder, two alternative counts of second-degree murder, criminal discharge of a weapon, aggravated battery and two counts of battery, according to the district attorney's office.

Just before&nbsp; 4a.m. July 27, 2023, police responded to the 300 block of North Moore after a a street sweeper operator saw two gunshot victims in a vehicle in a parking garage in Wichita's Old Town and called 911, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.

EMS&nbsp; arrived on the scene and attempted life-saving measures Lerma-Dominguez and Lara-Hernandez died at the scene.&nbsp;

NEW YORK (AP) — The “Architects of AI” were named Time magazine's person of the year for 2025 on Thursday.

The magazine cited 2025 as the year when the potential of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/artificial-intelligence">artificial intelligence</a>&nbsp;“roared into view" with no turning back.

“For delivering the age of thinking machines, for wowing and worrying humanity, for transforming the present and transcending the possible, the Architects of AI are TIME’s 2025 Person of the Year,” Time said in a social media post.

The magazine was deliberate in selecting people — the “individuals who imagined, designed, and built AI” — rather than the technology itself, though there would have been some precedent for that.

“We’ve named not just individuals but also groups, more women than our founders could have imagined (though still not enough), and, on rare occasions, a concept: the endangered earth, in 1988, or the personal computer, in 1982,” wrote Sam Jacobs, the editor-in-chief, in an explanation of the choice. “The drama surrounding the selection of the PC over Apple’s Steve Jobs later became the stuff of books and a movie.”

It made sense for Time to anoint AI because 2025 was the year that it shifted from “a novel technology explored by early adopters to one where a critical mass of consumers see it as part of their mainstream lives,” Thomas Husson, principal analyst at research firm Forrester, said by email.

AI was a leading contender for the top slot, according to prediction markets, along with tech CEOs Jensen Huang of Nvidia and Sam Altman of OpenAI. Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope whose election this year followed the death of Pope Francis, was also considered a contender, with President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani topping lists as well.

The magazine's selection dates from 1927, when its editors have picked the person they say most shaped headlines over the previous 12 months.

Time magazine reveals unusual person of the year for 2025

KANSAS CITY—Law enforcement are investigating a multi-state theft from Walmart stores and have made an arrest.

Just after 4p.m. Dec. 8, police were notified by another law enforcement agency about two suspects possibly heading towards the Walmart in Harrisonville, Missouri, approximately 39 miles south of Kansas City, according to a media release from the police department.

The suspects had reportedly been involved with an ongoing shoplifting scam from various Walmarts across the United States. The suspects were located by officers and placed under arrest for receiving stolen property. 

The suspects have allegedly stolen over $58,000 worth of merchandise in the last 6 months from Walmarts in at least four different states. 

Both suspects, who are not residents of the state of Missouri, were charged with Receiving Stolen Property (D Felony) and are currently being held at the Cass County jail.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) is hitting the Kansas City metro, Lawrence and surrounding areas hard right now, according to a media release from Operation Wildlife.

The organization reports fielding 15 or more calls per day with birds -mostly waterfowl - ducks, geese etc. exhibiting symptoms.

Symptoms include:-Neurological impairment: Birds may lack coordination, appear confused or disoriented, have tremors, seizures, or have a twisted neck.

Difficulty breathing: open mouth, wheezing-Nasal discharge, coughing, or sneezing: Birds may have blood-tinged discharge

Sudden death: Without any prior signs of illness 

Swelling: Of the eyelids, head-Other symptoms: Birds may stumble or fall down, have diarrhea, have a hunched appearance, or have ruffled feathers and die within a few hours or a day of intake.

Birds with HPAI may have additional injuries such as a broken leg or broken wing, sustained from falling from the sky from exhaustion during flight.

HPAI is not treatable and is a fatal disease for the bird.

Birds with this disease need to be humanely euthanized and properly disposed of to limit spread of disease.

HPAI is highly contagious to other birds, felines, and potentially to humans and other species. If you come across a bird you suspect is affected contact Operation Wildlife by email opwildlife@aol.com or 785-542-3625 and they can advise you on how to proceed.

In SOME cities, animal control is assisting by dispatching the bird in the field and removing it for cremation. For residents of cities that do not provide this service, Operation Wildlife are able to assist with euthanasia and cremation.  It’s important to note that Operation Wildlife operates like a veterinary clinic, run by volunteers and funded by donations so we ARE NOT able to report out to pick these birds up. If you are bringing a sick bird to Operation Wildlife for these services please notify them ahead of time and do not bring the bird into the facility. They will meet you out on the driveway so as not to expose the birds in their care.
