From being told she wasn’t smart enough for college to earning a national award, Tisa Mason’s journey is a testament to hard work and the support she received along the way.

"You don't get to this position, and you don't get this recognition, without a lot of other people contributing to the work that you get recognized for. Nothing happens in isolation," Fort Hays State University President Mason said. "This award is reflective of the work of a lot of people, not just mine."

Mason received the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators IV-West President’s Award in October in St. Louis. The honor recognizes a university president who has advanced the quality of student life on campus by supporting student affairs staff and programs.

Joey Linn, FHSU vice president for student affairs, said in his nomination letter to the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators committee, "Dr. Mason is widely recognized by students, faculty, staff, and alumni as a president who genuinely and consistently prioritizes student life... she models authentic student-centered leadership."

Mason said being visible to students matters to her because she wants them to feel cared for. This extends to joining the student section at football games, attending band and percussion concerts and traveling to Milwaukee to support All-American runner Emily McCullough.

"One of my favorite things to this day is high-fives across campus. I love to high-five students. I want them to know that the reason I'm here is because I believe in the potential of their future," she said.

Mason said the nomination was humbling and added the national association played a foundational role in her path to becoming president. She was born in Palmer, Massachusetts, with her father working as a barber and her mother as a school bus driver.

No one in Mason’s family had attended college, making her a first-generation student. This was despite being doubted during her time at Classical High School in Rhode Island, where she graduated in 1979.

"My guidance counselor told me I wasn't smart enough to go to college and that my parents couldn't afford it anyway," Mason said. "But I was fortunate enough to have a mom who wanted more, worked hard and encouraged my heart."

Mason recalled attending a college fair and being struck by the friendliness of the recruiters at the Transylvania University booth from Kentucky. She took a bold step and enrolled without ever seeing the campus or even visiting the state.

Mason said she entered college as a pre-med student but eventually found her passion in social science, earning her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Anthropology in 1983.&nbsp;

The National Association of Campus Activities conducted a nationwide search to select five students for a pilot program that would earn a master’s degree and a professional certification.

"Somebody dropped out at the last minute," Mason said. "Eastern Illinois University called Transylvania and said, 'We have an opening. Do you know anyone?'"&nbsp;

That opportunity brought her to Illinois, where the association had partnered with the institution to offer the program. Mason earned her Master of Science in Education in 1984 while working as an administrative graduate assistant in the Office of Student Activities from 1983 to 1984.&nbsp;

"My first job was at Hanover College," Mason said. "The person hiring there used to work at Transylvania University, where I was a student. There are all these incredible networks and leaps of faith that are sprinkled through the trajectory that brought me here."

Mason worked as assistant dean of students at Hanover College in Indiana from 1984 to 1986, managing two residence halls, advising the Panhellenic Council and committees of the student programming board. She also served as assistant director of the campus center.

From 1987 to 1994, she served as director of student life and an assistant professor at Christopher Newport University in Virginia, overseeing all aspects of student life and residential life.

Mason earned her Doctor of Education from the College of William and Mary in Virginia in 1992. Her dissertation, titled “The Commuters’ Alma Mater: Profiles of College Student Experiences at a Commuter Institution,” examined how different students experience campus life through interviews and exercises.

In 1994, she became the executive director of Sigma Kappa Sorority and Foundation in Indianapolis, an organization with more than 135,000 members. In 2004, Mason once again took on the role of dean of student life, this time at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater.

Mason said that during this time, former FHSU President Edward Hammond was searching for a new vice president of student affairs and contacted the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators for recommendations.

"Hammond called the president of the association, who called my boss in Wisconsin, and then said to me, 'Hey, President Hammond is looking for a vice president. Do you think you'd be interested?'" Mason said. "I applied, and I was very fortunate to get the job."

Before beginning her new chapter in the sunflower state, Mason said she had never been to Kansas, but she quickly adjusted to what would eventually become her new home.

"People were very personal, supportive, and it was a positive experience," she said.

She served as vice president of student affairs from 2008 to 2014, the year Hammond retired. Mason said she was a finalist for the FHSU presidency, but when that opportunity closed, another one emerged elsewhere.

A search firm reached out to Mason with the offer to become president of Valley City State University in North Dakota.

"One of the advantages of not getting the job here the first time and going to Valley City State is that I was joining a new community that had no preconceived notions about who I was or how I would lead. I had to rely on building new relationships, and I got to try things out in a new environment with new colleagues," Mason said.

<a href="https://www.vcsu.edu/about-vcsu/who-we-are/history/">According to Valley City State University</a>, Mason served as the 13th president, leading the campus through statewide budget cuts during her three-year tenure while pushing for infrastructure upgrades.

Mason said her years in North Dakota gave her the confidence and presidential experience she would later bring to FHSU as its 10th president. She said the decision to return came with some hesitation.

"What sometimes feels like misfortune turns out to be a blessing, and that's how I looked at that pathway," she said. "I got to come back to colleagues I trusted, good friends and a community that I really adored. The hardest part about coming back to Fort Hays was leaving Valley City because I felt the same way about that community."

"When I had my inauguration, the whole theme that would carry through my presidency is unlocking untapped potential because I believe every student, faculty, and staff has untapped potential, and we're here to help you launch your future," she said.

Mason said she stays grounded through a steady routine that starts with a 5:30 a.m. workout, along with prayer and support from her strong faith community.

Mason hopes to uphold FHSU’s promise of affordable success for as long as she can serve. She said the most rewarding part of her presidency is congratulating thousands of graduates each year as they embark on their own journeys.

"Every hand I shake at commencement is the most meaningful to me. I wish I knew every story of every student whose hand I shook, but I know from my own story how transformative a college education is and how it will impact the future of that person's family as well," Mason said.

Keep the holiday season cheerful by protecting pets from potential hazards. Susan Nelson, clinical professor and veterinarian at the Kansas State University&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksvhc.org/services/pet-health-center/">Hill's Pet Health and Nutrition Center</a>, cautions pet owners about the unexpected dangers that celebrations of the season can present to curious animals.

"Homes are often decked for the holidays, and many decorations and wrapping items have the potential to cause harm if ingested, bitten or knocked over," Nelson said. "These include items such as ribbons, tinsel, hooks, electrical cords, candles, oil lamps, potpourri, ornaments and wreaths."

If pets ingest holiday plants, it can cause anything from minor gastrointestinal irritation to life-threatening toxicity. Nelson says to keep mistletoe, holly, amaryllis, balsam, pine and cedar out of reach. Certain water additives for Christmas trees can also be toxic to pets. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals provides a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/aspca-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants">list of plants toxic</a>&nbsp;to dogs and cats on its website.

Holiday festivities might be fun for people, but Nelson said they can be stressful for pets. Strangers and crowds can make animals anxious, so Nelson advises keeping them in a comfortable, quiet place away from the commotion with a favorite toy or treat. Even if pets enjoy company, they should still have access to a room or crate in a calm area where guests won't disturb them.

For pets that are stressed by visitors, Nelson recommends consulting with a veterinarian about prescribing anxiolytics to help decrease the pet's anxiety until the visitors are gone.

"It's important to make sure pets have identification, like a collar with tags or a microchip," Nelson added. "That way, if they slip through the door and run away as guests enter or leave, the pet can be returned. It's critical for tags and microchips to have the most up-to-date contact information to help with reunification."

Many animal-related emergency visits during the holidays are due to pets eating something inappropriate, whether intentionally given to them or accidentally ingested.

"Fatty foods can lead to life-threatening pancreatitis," Nelson said. "This includes things like ham, gravy, fat trimmings from meat, turkey skin and dark meat, butter-laden potatoes, and other buttered vegetables."

Meat bones can cause life-threatening perforations of the gastrointestinal tract, especially poultry bones, which tend to splinter when chewed. Several small pieces can also lead to obstructions or tooth breakage.

Nelson encourages pet owners to exercise caution with foods and beverages that can be harmful to animals. 

Items to avoid that can pose serious health risks include chocolate, coffee and other caffeinated drinks, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, raw yeast dough, salty snacks, foods seasoned with garlic or onion powder, citrus stems, leaves, peels, fruits and seeds, dairy products, desserts or candies sweetened with xylitol, and alcoholic beverages.

"Securing all food items behind a pet-proof door and making sure trash cans are properly closed can help keep pets safe," Nelson said. "Strings, foil wrappers, stainless steel scrub pads, skewers and other items smell like the food they were used on and can be tempting for pets to ingest. These can lead to gastrointestinal obstruction or perforation."

K-State veterinarian shares tips to keep pets safe during the holiday season

Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas

A grant for more than $20,000 was received by Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas from the Beach Family Foundation to enhance communication, improve community engagement and support its Custom Creations work environment.

Specifically, this grant will be instrumental in enhancing DSNWK’s public presence and communication through electronic displays at their office locations throughout its service area. The displays will showcase achievements, program updates, community events, and information about services which will improve communication with visitors, families, and the public.

The grant will also be used to upgrade Custom Creations workspace with new cabinets, new display photos and merchandise display racks. These additions to our downtown Hays store will better showcase the exceptional work and talent of DSNWK’s many artists.

Finally, the Beach Family grant will be used to replace outdated manufacturing technology, and improve the overall work environment for Custom Creations. DSNWK will purchase two additional Cricut machines, a Cricut Autopress, a Glowforge Pro, a sublimation machine, and new work tables.

“Adding these items to our creative options allows DSNWK to provide a more comprehensive,&nbsp;effective, and modern environment that empowers individuals with developmental disabilities to&nbsp;achieve their fullest potential and foster greater connections and understanding in our community,” states Jerry Michaud, DSNWK president.

DSNWK is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving 18 counties in northwest Kansas with a mission to advocate for persons with disabilities and those who care about them by planning and supporting a life of dignity, interdependence, and personal satisfaction in the community.

In a world where the hustle and bustle often overshadow gentle acts of kindness, Isaiah Kevin Maxi stood out. Born on August 16, 1994, in Kansas City, Missouri, Isaiah’s earthly journey ended at the age of 30 on July 10, 2025, but his legacy continues to resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.

During the holiday season, when families gather around the warmth of love and laughter, we reflect on the indelible mark Isaiah left on his loved ones and his community. From a young age, Isaiah faced challenges, particularly with the loss of his mother, Kim Alexander-Maxi, when he was just six years old. Yet, amidst personal tragedy, he transformed his grief into a powerful drive for service and leadership, becoming a beacon of hope and positivity for others.

A proud graduate of Fort Hays State University (FHSU) in 2017, Isaiah earned degrees in Sociology and Organizational Leadership while actively participating in student activities, athletics, and working at the Tiger Tots Preschool Center, where he was affectionately known as “Mr. Maxi.” His infectious energy lit up the room, encouraging children to embrace learning and teamwork.

Friends and family describe Isaiah as warm-hearted and approachable, someone who made everyone feel valued. He was not just a talented athlete on the football field, earning accolades as a leader of the Fort Hays State Tigers, but also a compassionate volunteer dedicated to uplifting others. Seth Kastle, professor of leadership, once said, “He was the epitome of what we educate our students to be – dedicated to serving others and helping those in need.”

After graduation, Isaiah continued his mission of service through AmeriCorps, striving to create positive change in the lives of those around him. He embraced every challenge as an opportunity, believing that “everything happens for a reason,” and ensuring his legacy was one of compassion, leadership, and community building.

His sudden passing left a profound void in the hearts of those who loved him. To honor his memory and the values he embodied, the FHSU Leadership Program has renamed its student service award to the “Isaiah Maxi Outstanding Leadership and Service Award.” This accolade will celebrate and recognize students who exemplify the same spirit of dedication and service that Isaiah so passionately embraced.

“Life isn’t just about football,” he would often say. “When I leave here, I want people to say, ‘Maxi was a good dude.’” Indeed, Isaiah was much more than a good dude; he was a phenomenal human being whose legacy will inspire generations to come.

This December, as we gather with those who matter most, we remember Isaiah’s unwavering commitment to lifting others up and the lasting impact of his generous spirit. His legacy lives on through the stories, kindness, and encouragement he shared, inspiring us to embody the&nbsp;gratitude, courage, and compassion he represented so well. As we reflect on his life and the holiday season, may we honor Isaiah by nurturing meaningful connections, extending kindness, and carrying forward his call to “make a difference” in our own lives and communities.

COLBY — “Christmas in Killarney” is the&nbsp;Western Plains Arts Association&nbsp;holiday season program this year. It will be held Friday, December 5 at the Oakley High School auditorium starting at 7:30 p.m.&nbsp;

Admission to the show can be purchased at the door or by WPAA season tickets.&nbsp;

“Christmas in Killarney” transports audiences to 1920s Ireland through world-champion Irish dance and beloved holiday classics. Don’t miss this holiday special that shows what it means to celebrate Christmas the “Irish Way,” where many of our Christmas traditions originated.&nbsp;

The United Way of Ellis County announces the opening of the 2026 CARE Council application process.

The application deadline has been extended to Dec. 19.

Any&nbsp;501(c)(3) that provides services in Ellis County is eligible to apply. The services must meet one of the three&nbsp;criteria of education, health, and financial stability.

The CARE Council is made up of 12 community volunteers who review the applications to determine funding for&nbsp;the United Way of Ellis County, City of Hays social service funds and alcohol tax funds, and Ellis County&nbsp;alcohol tax funds.

The Hays Symphony is set to perform its annual holiday concert, "Poinsettia Pops," at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5 at the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center on the Fort Hays State University campus, 600 Park St.

The "Poinsettia Pops" concert serves as the symphony's traditional seasonal performance, bringing together musicians and community members to celebrate the holidays through music.

This year’s program will feature an array of beloved orchestral holiday arrangements, including the driving rhythm of "Carol of the Bells," the tranquil beauty of "Greensleeves," and the dynamic, festive sounds of Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride."

Ken Windholz will guide the audience through the evening’s program as the master of ceremonies.

Music director Benjamin Cline emphasized the concert’s role as an annual fixture in the community calendar.

“‘Poinsettia Pops’ is not just a concert; it’s our cherished annual tradition, a time when the orchestra comes together to offer a vibrant, musical celebration that truly marks the start of the holiday season for our community,” Cline said. “We are proud that this concert, like all our performances, remains free to the public. It is central to our mission to ensure that the joy and richness of live symphony music are available to everyone in Ellis County and beyond.”

Along with the holiday celebration, this year the Symphony will use the event to support local families in need during the holiday season, partnering with the local chapter of Toys For Tots.

Attendees are strongly encouraged to participate in the toy drive by contributing new, unwrapped toys or other appropriate gifts, which may be dropped off in the lobby of the performing arts center before the concert begins.

The Symphony and Toys For Tots welcome a variety of donations suitable for children of different ages, including books, board or card games, arts and crafts kits, sports equipment, and personal care items such as hair brushes or accessories.

Hays Symphony Guild president Joan Crull highlighted the connection between the arts and community service.

“The Hays Symphony Guild looks forward to 'Poinsettia Pops' every year. It’s a signature event that brings our community together for beautiful music and holiday fellowship, and we encourage everyone to join us for this special tradition,” Crull said. “Through the generosity of our supporters, we can maintain the tradition of free concerts. We are thrilled to combine this annual holiday event with the Toys For Tots drive, allowing the community to experience seasonal music while supporting a great cause.”

The evening will conclude with a post-concert reception, which has been made possible through a generous donation from Great Plains Dermatology.

Hays Symphony to present annual "Poinsettia Pops" concert on Friday

“It still amazes me how the kids who are shuffled around a lot have never gotten a gift for Christmas or their birthday.”

That is how volunteer Michele Eiland summed up her reason for helping to organize the Christmas gift drive each year for foster children served by St. Francis Ministries in Hays. The gifts go to foster children in Ellis County and across northwest Kansas.

This year that totals around 160 kids, Eiland said. Their ages range from infant to 17. Eiland works with Hays businesses to erect trees containing “wish lists” compiled by the children, their case workers, and their foster parents.

“Many of these kids don’t even know how to make a ‘wish list,’” Eiland said. “They will ask for basic necessities such as toothpaste or socks.”

Their St. Francis case workers and their foster parents gently let them know that it’s OK to ask for special things, such as toys or games, Eiland said.

The Christmas for Kids Trees are located at Golden Belt Bank, 1101 E. 27th; KPRD Praise Radio, 709 Main St.; The Gamers Guild, 200 E. Eighth St.; and Akido of Northwest Kansas, 208 E. Eighth St., #1.

Each wish list card lists the child’s age, gender, and, if clothing is needed, what kind(s) and size(s). Individuals are asked to take a card (or more than one) and purchase items from the list for that child. The ministry suggests a spending limit of $125 per child. The wish list card and unwrapped gifts are due back to the tree site by Friday, Dec. 5.

A “Wrapping Party” to wrap the gifts for these 160 children will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at North Oak Community Church, 3000 Oak St. All wrapping supplies and gift tags will be provided.

The community is invited to participate, but registration is requested to make sure there are enough wrapping supplies for everyone, Eiland said. She asked that people register by texting her at (214) 546-1974.

“These are Christmas wishes from kids that are not at home this Christmas. Many have never received any kind of gift--that includes Christmas,” Eiland said.&nbsp;

“The Wrapping Party is an opportunity to get your family, friends or social groups together and help out in the wrapping of these gifts. It is a great way for all ages to give back to others in the community with no monetary costs, only a few hours of your time.&nbsp;By either of these simple acts--the shopping and wrapping--people can make this Christmas holiday special for these kids.&nbsp;“

Those who would prefer to make a monetary donation may do so by writing a check to St. Francis Ministries and putting Christmas for Kids in the memo line. Checks may be dropped off at the St. Francis office, 3000 Broadway Ave. in Hays, or to Golden Belt Bank, 1101 E. 27th.

Gift drive underway for foster kids served by St. Francis Ministries

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on drug allegations after a triffic stop.

Just after 11p.m. November 26, a K-9 Unit with the Shawnee County&nbsp; Sheriff’s Office&nbsp; conducted a traffic stop on a black 2017 Chevrolet Impala for speeding in&nbsp; the 300 block of SE 29th Street, according to Deputy Abigail Christian. During the investigation, it was determined that the driver had a&nbsp; suspended driver’s license and a warrant for his arrest. Illegal narcotics, including cocaine, were&nbsp; also located.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump was awarded the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/fifa-peace-prize-infantino-trump-c339695d2cca0f8acd92ff0264ff5ea9">new FIFA peace prize</a>&nbsp;on Friday at the 2026 World Cup draw — giving the soccer spectacle to set matchups for the quadrennial tournament even more of a Trumpian flair.

Trump, who has openly campaigned for the Nobel Peace Prize, had been heavily expected to receive the newly created FIFA prize. FIFA president Gianni Infantino, a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-world-cup-soccer-gianni-infantino-65a8160052baa74a007403ad20bbc256">close ally</a>&nbsp;of Trump, has said he thought Trump should have won the Nobel for his efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza.

The certificate that Infantino handed Trump recognizes the U.S. president for his actions to “promote peace and unity around the world.”

“This is what we want from a leader — a leader that cares about the people,” Infantino said about Trump, who wore a gold medal around his neck and was presented with a gold trophy with his name on it that depicts hands holding up the world. The FIFA leader said to Trump “this is your prize, this is your peace prize.”

Trump thanked his family, including his wife, first lady Melania Trump, and praised the leaders of the other two host nations — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum — in his brief remarks.

“This is truly one of the great honors of my life,” Trump said.

Infantino has often spoken about soccer as a unifier for the world, but the prize is a departure from the federation’s traditional focus on sport.

FIFA has described the prize as one that rewards “individuals who have taken exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace and by doing so have united people across the world.”

It comes during a week where Trump’s administration has been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pete-hegseth-boat-strike-admiral-congress-521606d39c04dcc040ea232dc9cfeeda">under scrutiny for lethal strikes</a>&nbsp;on alleged drug boats in the Caribbean and as Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-world-cup-draw-soccer-travel-bans-9a50f48ae28fd61e5e8339a2dedca907">hardens his rhetoric</a>&nbsp;against immigrants.

🎥FIFA awards President Trump their first peace prize

WASHINGTON (AP) — The man accused of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pipe-bombs-dc-jan6-40d748385b7b18ece2208c6c6690708b">planting a pair of pipe bombs</a>&nbsp;outside the headquarters of the Republican and Democratic national parties in Washington on the eve of the U.S. Capitol attack confessed to the act in interviews with investigators, two people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.

Brian Cole Jr. also indicated that he believed the 2020 election was stolen and expressed views supportive of President Donald Trump, said the people, who were not authorized to discuss by name an ongoing investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The details add to a still-emerging portrait of the 30-year-old suspect from Woodbridge, Virginia, and it was not immediately clear what other information or perspectives he may have shared while cooperating with law enforcement following his arrest on Thursday.

Federal authorities have not publicly disclosed any information about a possible motive or whether there is any connection to the attack on the Capitol the following day by Trump supporters.

A spokesperson for the federal public defender’s office, which will be representing Cole at a Friday court appearance in Washington, declined to comment. Calls to relatives of Cole listed in public records were not immediately returned Thursday.

Cole faces explosives charges in connection with the Jan. 5, 2021 placement of the pipe bombs near the offices of the Democratic and Republican national committees. Nobody was hurt before the bombs were rendered safe, but the FBI has said both devices could have been lethal.

An FBI affidavit made public Thursday indicated that investigators zeroed in on Cole through analysis of credit card charges related to the purchase of pipe bomb components, cellphone towers and a license plate reader.

The arrest marks the first time investigators have publicly identified a suspect in an act that has been an enduring mystery for nearly five years in the shadow of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeumZ2aHDug" target="_blank">the violent Capitol attack</a>.
