The Hays Area Board of Zoning Appeals will have a public hearing on Monday to consider a request for a setback variance for a free-standing ITM (interactive teller machine) canopy at 2500 Vine St.

Credit Union of America is opening a new location in Hays on the site of the former Love's Country Store. The convenience store building, signage and canopy have been demolished. The underground gasoline storage tanks will also be removed.&nbsp;

The 11th-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team will open play in the 2025 NCAA Division II Championship with a matchup against Southern Nazarene in the quarterfinal round of the Central Regional Friday beginning at noon in Pittsburg, Kan.

The Tigers earned the No. 3 seed after turning in a record of 27-4 to date and finishing runner-up at the MIAA Championship tournament, while the Crimson Storm enter the tournament 23-7 on the year after bowing out in the semifinal round of the GAC tournament.

This is the 10th time Fort Hays State has been selected to play in the big dance since moving to Division II in 1991-92, including nine appearances in the bracket over the last 11 years, two more than any other school during that span (Pittsburg State - 7 appearances). Fort Hays State is 8-8 all-time in the tournament, including a 5-2 record in the quarterfinals, a 1-1 record as the No. 3 seed, a 1-0 mark against the No. 6 seed, a 1-1 record against GAC teams, a 2-3 record in neutral site matchups and an 0-1 mark in games played in Pittsburg, Kan.

The Tigers enter the tournament ranked T-11th in the latest WBCA DII Coaches Poll. FHSU is undefeated when ranked 11th in the coaches poll during the DII era (9-0). Southern Nazarene is receiving votes in the latest poll.

Seven teams in the Central Region are ranked in the latest WBCA DII Coaches Poll (four) or receiving votes (three), more than any other region in this year's tournament (West - six teams mentioned).

Fort Hays State's 27 wins this season are fifth-most in the program's 56-year history. The Tigers have now won 25 or more games eight times. FHSU reached 20 wins for the 14th year in a row this season, the longest active streak in Division II and sixth-longest across all NCAA women's basketball.

Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;and Talexa Weeter&nbsp;were both named to the MIAA All-Tournament Team last week. Weeter averaged 24.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game in the tournament while hitting 60.9 percent from the floor and 50 percent from behind the arc (.500). DeGarmo put up 19.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game over three games in KC. She became the all-time leader in scoring and rebounding in tournament history, concluding her career with 227 points (16.2 ppg) and 117 rebounds (8.4 rpg) in 14 games.

Fort Hays State placed a league-high five players on this year's All-MIAA teams, including MIAA Player of the year DeGarmo and MIAA Defensive Player of the Year Olivia Hollenbeck. DeGarmo is the fifth player since 1980 to earn the conference's top honor in consecutive seasons and the first to do so since Washburn's Crystal Walker in 2001-02 and 2002-03.DeGarmo is the third player in school history to earn first team all-conference honors three times, joining Annette Wiles and Kate Lehman. It is her fourth All-MIAA honor overall. Hollenbeck is the first five-time all-conference performer in team history after picking up first team honors.

Kate Dilsaver&nbsp;and Hollenbeck were both listed on the MIAA All-Defensive Team, giving the Tigers multiple representatives on that team for just the second time in team history. Dilsaver, Weeter and Brooke Loewe&nbsp;all received honorable mention recognition.

DeGarmo and Hollenbeck both picked up MIAA Player of the Week honors twice this season. FHSU tied with Pittsburg State for the most MIAA Players of the Week this season with four each. This is the third-straight season that DeGarmo has been named player of the week multiple times.

DeGarmo has played in six NCAA tournament games in her career, averaging 17.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per contest. She's scored in double figures all six times, including two games with 20-plus points and three double-doubles.

Loewe is the school's single-season assists leader with 221 this season, breaking a 34-year old record. Already with 376 assists as a Tiger, the Huxley, Iowa native needs three assists to move into fifth on the all-time assists list at FHSU.

Hollenbeck has scored in double figures 99 times in her 153-game career.

The Tigers rank third as a team in assist/turnover ratio in Division II at 1.37 while also ranking third in assists with 18.8 per game. The Tigers are fourth with a shooting percentage of 46.8 percent while ranking ninth in scoring margin at plus-17.2.

Fort Hays State is 2-0 all-time against Southern Nazarene, including a 45-43 win in the 2022 D2CCA Tip-Off Classic (11/6/22) and an 84-78 victory in 1981 when the school was named Bethany Nazarene (1/21/81). Both of those contests were also neutral-site matchups.

DeGarmo recorded a double-double against the Crimson Storm in 2022, totaling 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Ellie Stearns&nbsp;totaled 11 points in the win.

The Crimson Storm pride themselves on defense, limiting teams to 55.4 points per game (21st in DII). Graduate student Hannah Giddey was named GAC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year after averaging 16.2 points per game (82nd in DII), 10.4 rebounds per game (23rd in DII), 3.7 assists per game (83rd in DII) and 2.7 blocks per game (sixth in DII) alongside a shooting percentage of 51.4 percent (38th in DII).

The winner of Friday's quarterfinal will advance to the regional semifinals to take on either No. 2 seed Concordia-St. Paul or No. 7 seed Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday (March 15) beginning at 5 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Scammers impersonate law enforcement officials, claiming that individuals have missed court dates, have unpaid fines, or that warrants have been issued for their arrest. They demand immediate payment to "clear" the warrant or avoid jail, often requesting payment through unconventional methods like gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency.

"The sheriff's office will never call, text or email individuals to request money or personal information," said Sheriff Scott Braun in a news release.&nbsp;

"Official communications regarding warrants or court appearances are conduced through formal channels, not unsolicited calls or messages," he said.&nbsp;

If you receive such a call, do not provide personal information or make any payments.

Instead, verify the claim's legitimacy by contacting the Ellis County Sheriff's Office directly at 785-625-1040 or the Hays Police Department at 785-625-1030.

Grow Hays predicts an increase in housing units for 2025 after only 21 homes were built in 2024.

Doug Williams, executive director of Grow Hays, hosted a Tuesday luncheon to discuss housing sales volume, market conditions, inventory shortages and upcoming projects.

"I think a year from now when we have this meeting again... it's going to be a different conversation because we're going to be in a much better position to be building a lot more homes," Williams said.

Home sales volume rose by $4 million in 2024, with a slight increase in transactions. Williams said the average sale price increased by 1.5%, compared to the 12.2% increase the previous year.

In 2024, housing inventory remained low. Most transactions involved homes priced less than $200,000, while those between $200,000 and $300,000 sold quickly.

"They continue to sell very well, and that continues to be a sweet spot market," Williams said.

Williams predicted that housing supply issues will continue in 2025. Twenty or fewer single-family homes are expected to be built, and rental prices could increase due to continued demand.

Only 15 single-family and six multi-family home permits were issued in 2024. Williams said he expects more than 30 new multi-family units in 2025.

Williams highlighted major development projects, including <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/c98f8aeb-7fad-4401-a5e6-2777da1e37e1">The Grove</a>, <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/f367c960-2038-4546-b83e-7a081f032723">Chestnut Suites</a>, <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/70507513-a0c4-489b-86c5-f7edf0fdf753+">Tallgrass’s second and fourth additions</a>, and a <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/68c83702-3486-4109-b74f-2a7ee851a4fe">new shopping center planned north of I-70</a>.

"Retail is an area where we have not done what we need to do in our community as a regional hub," he said. "We need more variety in retail."

The luncheon also covered market challenges such as subcontractor shortages and funding difficulties. An attendee asked Williams about the potential impact of tariffs on projects.

"I think that they could make a big difference," Williams said. "It's that unknown that creates this hesitancy for anybody to push forward a new project where you don't know what your costs are going to be."

Williams said tariffs pose a significant risk, affecting material prices, infrastructure and construction costs.

Williams also noted a shortage of available lots, particularly in northwest Hays, a lack of skilled construction labor, and the difficulty of attracting private investors to multi-family housing due to low returns on investment as barriers to development.

Williams compared Hays to other communities regarding mill levies, median home prices and property taxes.

"If you look at the other communities, they’re the ones that are building a lot of houses. They're all having significant economic development in those communities," Williams said.

He responded to concerns about high taxes by noting other towns have higher tax burdens, even with comparable or lower home values.

Williams also discussed a lot on 27th Street and Canal Boulevard that will be used to create small rental housing units.

"We need more variety in retail."The luncheon also covered market challenges such as subcontractor shortages and funding difficulties. An attendee asked Williams about the potential impact of tariffs on projects."I think that they could make a big difference," Williams said. "It's that unknown that creates this hesitancy for anybody to push forward a new project where you don't know what your costs are going to be."Williams said tariffs pose a significant risk, affecting material prices, infrastructure and construction costs.Williams also noted a shortage of available lots, particularly in northwest Hays, a lack of skilled construction labor, and the difficulty of attracting private investors to multi-family housing due to low returns on investment as barriers to development.Williams compared Hays to other communities regarding mill levies, median home prices and property taxes.<figure>

They're all having significant economic development in those communities," Williams said.He responded to concerns about high taxes by noting other towns have higher tax burdens, even with comparable or lower home values.Williams also discussed a lot on 27th Street and Canal Boulevard that will be used to create small rental housing units.

Options Domestic and Sexual Violence Services and Jana’s Campaign are inviting community members to participate in the Ellis County Community Forum, an opportunity to discuss local needs, share feedback, and help shape the future of domestic and sexual violence prevention efforts in the region.

The forum will be held twice to accommodate different schedules:

· Saturday, March 29, at 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

· Thursday, April 24, at 7:00 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Both sessions will take place in the Schmidt Gallery at the Hays Public Library with light refreshments available.

Jana’s Campaign and Options provide essential educational programming, including SafeBar training, workplace trainings, and other community-based education designed to promote safety, awareness, and prevention. 

However, the primary focus of these forums is to listen to the community and identify areas where additional support and resources are needed. By engaging with local residents, these organizations hope to enhance their outreach and tailor their services to better serve Ellis County.

Sexual violence and domestic violence affect individuals and families across all demographics, and addressing these issues requires a community-wide effort.

In 2023, Ellis County saw 133 incidents of domestic violence reported, resulting in 67 arrests. That means that around half of DV reports lead to an arrest – which is lower than the state average of 52.7%. In the past decade, at least 20 out of 25 murders in northwest Kansas were linked to dating or family violence. 

As for sexual violence – there are about 4 sexual assault reports each day in Kansas (one every 6 hours and 21 minutes). Thirteen rape incidents were reported to law enforcement in Ellis County in 2023, resulting in two arrests.

The goal of these forums is to provide a platform for open discussion, allowing community members to voice concerns, suggest solutions, and gain a deeper understanding of available resources to create a safer and more informed community.

These events are open to all Ellis County residents (and surrounding areas), and no registration is required. Community members are encouraged to attend and contribute to this important conversation.

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly and the Kansas Arts Commission (KAC)&nbsp; announced the recipients of the 2025 Kansas Governor’s Arts Awards during a ceremony held Thursday at the Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center. The event was focused on celebrating remarkable individuals, organizations and communities for their exceptional contributions and leadership in advancing the arts across Kansas.

Grammy and Oscar Award-winning musician Melissa Etheridge was named this year’s recipient of the prestigious Governor’s Award.

“There are many talented Kansans involved in creative work across our state, and we know that art enhances their lives and the lives of those around them,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “The people we recognized at the Governor’s Arts Awards tonight are using their talents and passions to strengthen communities all throughout Kansas and to enrich the culture of our great state.”

At the awards ceremony hosted by Wichita television personality Sierra Scott, 17 individuals and organizations were recognized for their work and efforts in elevating Kansas through arts and culture.

Brenda Meder, Hays Arts Council executive director, was honored for arts advocacy.&nbsp;

Nominations for each award are thoroughly reviewed and chosen by a selection committee. The recipient for The Governor’s Award is chosen by Governor Kelly herself.

Hays woman named a 2025 Governor's Arts Award winner

Fort Hays Tech | Northwest President Ben Schears was selected to serve as the Vice President for Economic and Workforce Development at Fort Hays State University.

Schears will lead Fort Hays State University’s&nbsp;efforts to foster economic growth, innovation, and workforce development. In this new role, Schears will engage directly with business and industry, focusing on connecting students to opportunities in FHSU’s vast service area that includes 63 of Kansas’s 105 counties. He will also support the economic and workforce development efforts of the two Fort Hays technical colleges and work closely with community leaders to address their most pressing needs.

Funding for this position comes from recent state investment in regional and workforce development initiatives at FHSU.

“Today marks&nbsp;a&nbsp;significant milestone for Fort Hays State University,” FHSU President Tisa Mason said. “Ben will bring high energy, strategic vision, and&nbsp;the proven ability to unite stakeholders toward common goals to this important new role. His impressive track record of building strong partnerships with local businesses&nbsp;and industries exemplifies his dedication to this vital work.”

Schears will transition from his current role as President of Fort Hays Tech | Northwest, Goodland, after playing an instrumental role in facilitating the creation of a historic strategic affiliation with Fort Hays Tech | Northwest&nbsp;and Fort Hays Tech | North Central, Hays and Beloit.

Having spent most of his childhood growing up on a small 40-acre farm near Emporia, Schears developed a deep appreciation for the challenges faced by rural Kansans. “It was an uphill battle for my parents, and others, to buy and operate a small farm in the 1980s and 1990s and to try to make a run at it,” said Schears. “Those were amazing years to spend living out in the country, and they weren’t always easy, but we were loved and always had food on the table.”

His career in higher education spans more than 22 years across two higher education institutions. It includes service in several senior leadership positions at Cowley College and extensive teaching experience as an adjunct instructor of history, leadership, and political science at Cowley College and Fort Hays Tech | Northwest. 

During their years living in Arkansas City, Schears and wife Rachel owned and operated their own business buying, flipping, and renting homes in the community – often bringing their five kids along to help with the wide variety of renovation projects.

For the past nine years, Schears has served as the president for Fort Hays Tech | Northwest, where he focused on building impactful student experiences, securing additional equipment and resources for faculty, building a significant funding pipeline focused on state/local/federal grants, and actively engaging in economic and community development. 

Schears and his team strengthened ties between the college and regional employers, built direct linkages with economic development organizations in surrounding counties, and worked to keep skilled professionals in Kansas by addressing critical workforce shortages.

“I’ve been blessed to be a part of many interesting, impactful, and exciting projects over the years,” Schears said. “Impactful work is never accomplished alone, and we can get a lot more done by working together. I have been fortunate to work alongside some amazing and talented people throughout my career and look forward to building more relationships at FHSU.”

Schears, who has always been drawn to civic work, was among a small team of community leaders who came together to forge an innovative partnership that led to the creation of the Sherman County Community Development organization. This collaboration successfully unified and aligned the efforts of the local Chamber of Commerce, the City of Goodland Economic Development, and the Sherman County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“Ben has been an exceptional leader for his nine years in Goodland,” said Dan Wasson, the area advisory board chairman for Fort Hays Tech | Northwest. “I respect his ability to communicate and share successes as well as his ability to deal with tough situations.”&nbsp;

During their years living in Arkansas City, Schears and wife Rachel owned and operated their own business buying, flipping, and renting homes in the community – often bringing their five kids along to help with the wide variety of renovation projects.For the past nine years, Schears has served as the president for Fort Hays Tech | Northwest, where he focused on building impactful student experiences, securing additional equipment and resources for faculty, building a significant funding pipeline focused on state/local/federal grants, and actively engaging in economic and community development. Schears and his team strengthened ties between the college and regional employers, built direct linkages with economic development organizations in surrounding counties, and worked to keep skilled professionals in Kansas by addressing critical workforce shortages. “I’ve been blessed to be a part of many interesting, impactful, and exciting projects over the years,” Schears said. “Impactful work is never accomplished alone, and we can get a lot more done by working together. RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - Fort Hays State's Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;has been named to the D2CCA All-Central Region First Team, announced Thursday by the Conference Commissioners Association.

DeGarmo was also a first team All-Region pick last season, making her the second Tiger to earn multiple All-Region accolades in their career (Kate Lehman).The Maize, Kan. native turned in another historic season for the Tigers, earning MIAA Player of the Year recognition for a second-consecutive season. She is the first women's basketball player to earn the honor multiple times since Washburn's Crystal Walker in 2001-02 and 2002-03.

The graduate student is averaging 16.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.6 steals per game this season while hitting a career-best 49.4 percent of her shots (215-of-435). She became Fort Hays State's career rebound leader this season, now with 1,223 career boards, while she moved into second in scoring with 2,257 career points. DeGarmo is the only basketball player in Fort Hays State history, male or female, to record at least 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds in a career.

DeGarmo has scored in double figures 29 times this season, bringing her career total of double-digit games to 120. She's eclipsed 20 points seven times and has nine double-doubles on the year.DeGarmo was the lone representative from the MIAA to earn a spot on the first team, with three other conference opponents picking up second team recognition.Fort Hays State will open play in the 2025 NCAA Division II Championship against Southern Nazarene in the quarterfinal round of the Central Regional beginning at noon on Friday in Pittsburg, Kan.

🏀 DeGarmo captures second all-region honor

Gayle Ernst, age72, of Ellis, Kansas, died on Wednesday, March 12,
2025, in Ellis. She was born on February 3, 1953, in Oceanside, California to
Carl Gene and Lila Lee (Smith) Gilpin. On January 19, 1982, she married Greg
Ernst in Ellis, he preceded her in death on February 3, 2024.

Gayle worked as a Cosmetologist, and as a CNA providing care for
individuals in the greater Ellis County area, but her greatest joy was being a
grandmother and Great grandmother. She enjoyed spending time at the lake,
gardening, and was quite an accomplished cook, sharing her recipes with friends
and family alike. Gayle never knew a stranger and had a heart as big as the
great outdoors, caring for her adopted children and pets.

She is survived by her sons: Shane (Amy) Buchholz, Charlie
(Yi-Tan) Martin of Glendale, Arizona, and Tyler Watson of Manhattan, Kansas;
her sister: Carla (Michael) Stiles of Hill City, Kansas; her grandchildren:
Jordyn Buchholz, Andrea Buchholz, Trinten Ernst, Matthew Ernst, Harper
Buchholz, Leighton Buchholz, Haven Watson and Annistyn Watson as well as five
great-grandchildren, together with one on the way. She will be deeply missed by
her extended family of nieces, nephews, and special friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son: Lucas; and
her sister: Linda.

Memorial Services and a Celebration of Gayle's life will be
Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory -
Brock's Chapel, 2509 Vine Street Hays, Kansas 67601. Inurnment will take place
in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery - Ellis at 3 PM on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to: The Humane Society
of the High Plains in care of the funeral chapel.

Nearly all of western Kansas, including Ellis County, is in a Red Flag Warning today, issued by the National Weather Service in Dodge City.

The warning is for 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday as high wind and low relative humidity combine for critical fire conditions.

Southerly wind gusts of up to 45 mph are predicted with a temperature reaching up to 79 degrees in Hays.

As of March 11, the most recent weekly drought monitor shows nearly all of Ellis County in moderate drought. The very southwest corner of the county is abnormally dry.&nbsp;

Hays has received&nbsp;1.71 inches of precipitation so far this year, according to the official record at the K-State Agricultural Research Center. The 158-year&nbsp; accumulative average precipitation is 2.46 inches by the end of March.
