ELLIS COUNTY — The Ellis County Sheriff's Office is warning the public about ongoing phone scams targeting residents in Ellis County.
Scammers impersonate law enforcement officials, claiming that individuals have missed court dates, have unpaid fines, or that warrants have been issued for their arrest. They demand immediate payment to "clear" the warrant or avoid jail, often requesting payment through unconventional methods like gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency.
"The sheriff's office will never call, text or email individuals to request money or personal information," said Sheriff Scott Braun in a news release.
"Official communications regarding warrants or court appearances are conduced through formal channels, not unsolicited calls or messages," he said.
If you receive such a call, do not provide personal information or make any payments.
Instead, verify the claim's legitimacy by contacting the Ellis County Sheriff's Office directly at 785-625-1040 or the Hays Police Department at 785-625-1030.
