FHSU Athletics EDMOND, Okla. – Fort Hays State Softball fell twice to No. 5 ranked Central Oklahoma on Saturday (Apr. 12). UCO won the first contest 3-1 before running away with the second game by run rule 20-1. FHSU is now 23-15 overall and 8-10 in the MIAA, while UCO moved to 37-6 overall and 16-2 in the MIAA.

The Bronchos jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a two-run home run by Terin Ritz in the first inning. UCO then added another run in the fourth on three hits, culminated on an RBI single by Kya Watson. UCO had four of its five total hits in the game in the innings it scored.

The Tigers also had five hits in the contest, but went scoreless all the way to the seventh inning. A Lilly Mohr walk to open the inning eventually set up an RBI single by Paige Thexton.

Savanah Egger threw a complete game, allowing five hits and a walk over 6.0 innings. She struck out four and moved to 10-9 on the season. Ritz moved to 13-2 in the circle for the season, also allowing five hits with two walks. She struck out eight batters for the win.

Fort Hays State looks to get back on track in a pair of road games next week at Missouri Southern (Fri. Apr. 18) and Pittsburg State (Sat. Apr. 19).

Kansas created the night vision hunting season for coyotes in 2021. Hunters say it’s a great option and want it expanded, but some property owners and regulators have concerns.

MEADE COUNTY —&nbsp;Hours after the sun has set for the day, it’s pitch black in the middle of Meade County. As David Hampton stands invisible in a southwest Kansas field scanning the landscape for coyotes, the only sounds are the crunch of dry grass underfoot and calls of coyotes in the distance.

He has a handheld night vision monocular. He also has a night vision scope on his gun. He spins in a circle quietly in the darkness waiting for coyotes to pop up.

“My dad used to drop me off when I was 10 years old in the sticks to go deer hunting," Hampton said. “One thing I am not is afraid of the dark.”

Strapped around his neck he has the remote to an electronic calling device. It can mimic coyote howls or the sounds of coyote prey in distress.

Hampton is an experienced coyote hunter, and enjoys trying his luck at night vision hunting, which regulators allowed&nbsp;<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/KDWP-Info/News/News-Archive/2020-Weekly-News/8-24-20-Special-Equipment-Approved-For-Hunting-Coyotes-at-Night/Special-Equipment-Approved-For-Hunting-Coyotes-at-Night-in-Kansas" target="_blank">&nbsp;in Kansas for coyotes back in 2021</a>. The season lasts the first three months of the year, with the hope of controlling exploding coyote populations and giving hunters more opportunities.

Now, that policy is under review. Regulators held a series of meetings across the state to hear from hunters and others, and will decide whether the season should be continued or modified by possibly expanding or reducing it.

But coyotes still thrive in Kansas no matter what people throw at them. Coyotes are incredibly resilient and eat about anything available. They also respond to hunting pressure by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nps.gov/articles/netn-species-spotlight-eastern-coyote.htm" target="_blank">having larger litters</a>, making them even harder to control.

After a few hours of hearing the coyotes howl, Hampton had only heard them, but didn't see any, and called it a night. He said that’s the nature of hunting smart predators.

In the truck on the way back, Hampton said difficulty of coyote hunting is part of the appeal.

“When you shoot a coyote and miss, we call that educating a coyote because they’re smart, keen animals,” Hampton said.

Night vision is the latest example of new technology being used to help hunters control predators in Kansas.

This venture goes back centuries in this region. As Europeans expanded west into Kansas and Nebraska, they have continually battled with coyotes.

In fact, settlers' expansion has allowed coyotes to expand themselves. When people moved, they killed off animals like wolves and mountain lions, which used to keep coyotes in check.

Cutting down forests to create farms gave coyotes&nbsp;<a href="https://zookeys.pensoft.net/article/15149/" target="_blank">more habitat</a>. Now, they are the<a href="https://www.inhs.illinois.edu/resources/inhsreports/winter-01/coyote/" target="_blank">&nbsp;most abundant</a>&nbsp;large predator in the country.

Kansas ranks&nbsp;<a href="https://worldpopulationreview.com/states/kansas" target="_blank">fourth in the nation</a>&nbsp;in coyote populations.

They’re a concern because they prey on livestock. Coyotes cost Kansas ranchers roughly&nbsp;<a href="https://enewsletters.k-state.edu/beeftips/2021/03/01/preventative-measures-for-coyote-control/#:~:text=If%20we%20include%20the%20value%20of%20cattle,your%20cattle%20and%20calves%20from%20coyote%20predation?" target="_blank">$4 million annually in livestock losses</a>. They also can damage crops and harm pets.

Predators cause<a href="https://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_health/nahms/general/downloads/cattle_calves_deathloss_2015.pdf" target="_blank">&nbsp;roughly 5%</a>&nbsp;of calf deaths in Kansas, and coyotes are blamed for nearly all of them.

Cattle rancher Nick Zerr in Gove County has been a huge advocate for the use of night vision in coyote hunting.

“There’s not as much wildlife out here and newborn calves are an easy target,” Zerr said. “This is my livelihood. I can’t lose money on predators if I can help it.”

A cattle rancher could lose $750 to $1000 per newborn calf to coyotes, and that can be a big impact on ranchers with smaller herds.

This has led the state to advocate for hunting to control their populations. And hunters see even more success at night.

“At night I had some hunters turn on their callers near my cattle and seven coyotes came running,” Zerr said. “You don’t really see that during the day.”

To try and give hunters an upper hand, Kansas allows night vision and thermal vision that helps hunters see coyotes before being spotted by the animals. This equipment is expensive. Getting started could cost hunters thousands of dollars.

Hunters also need a night vision equipment permit which costs $2.50.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife held meetings around the state last month to gather opinions on the night season.

From the rancher’s perspective, coyotes are pest animals that threaten their livelihoods.

Andrew Enfield, a hunter from Norton, spoke in favor of expanding the night season to control predators during the late spring when newborn calves are vulnerable.

“I have several landowners, cattle farmers, that call myself and others when they are calving and having issues with coyotes,” Enfield said.

Enfield would like to see the night season expanded further into the spring to help better protect livestock herds. Others want it expanded year-round.

Geoff Nemnich is a professional coyote hunter in the Midwest. He hosts a Youtube series called “The Last Stand” where he teaches hunting tips.

“At night, there's less traffic, less people out so the coyotes move around a lot more,” Nemnich said. “As a hunter, you can usually have a little more success, because the coyotes are just naturally up running around.”

Nemnich has shot up to 23 coyotes in a single night hunt.

The other advantage is it gives hunters with families and dayjobs more opportunities. Nemnich said it’s helping attract younger hunters

“Hunters can run out and hunt from eight at night till midnight, come back, get some sleep, and get up and go to work,” Nemnich said.

But some Kansans are not fully on board. Tad Kramar and his wife Margaret strongly opposed the night vision season at a meeting in Topeka. They live in rural Douglas County. They worry it will lead to hunting other animals out of season and be a disturbance.

“It's more dangerous to do this at night,” Tad Kramar said. “Also, as a rural resident, I would find it very disturbing to hear loud gunshots and see bright lights throughout the night.”

Law enforcement groups have also opposed the night season over fears of people using firearms at night and the possibility of deer poaching, which remains an issue in Kansas.

Some meeting attendees suggested moving the night coyote season so it doesn’t overlap with deer and elk seasons. They said that might reduce the likelihood of illegally using night vision for those species.

Secretary of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, Chris Kennedy, went over the results of public comments from the state meetings.

“Overall, a majority support the expansion across all user groups based on our data,” Kennedy said.

But several wildlife commissioners were hesitant to expand the season.

“My initial hesitance to expand to year round still stands from a personal standpoint. I do appreciate seasons. I do appreciate management,” Commissioner Whitney Damron said.

There’s more discussion on the issue ahead and a decision could come later this year.

Can night vision hunting solve coyote problems in Kansas? Majority support expanding it

TOPEKA — The House and Senate moved forward this week to create a new Kansas Office of Early Childhood, merging three departments that govern child care in the state, while loosening regulations for child care providers and providing an opt-out for required child vaccinations.

Both chambers passed&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/hb2045/" target="_blank">House Bill 2045</a>, sending the legislation on to Gov. Laura Kelly for her approval.

“This bipartisan legislation is a win for businesses, child care providers and most importantly, Kansas children and families,” Kelly said in a statement. “Now, our early childhood system will no longer be bogged down by inefficiencies and bureaucratic red tape. I look forward to signing House Bill 2045 as we streamline access to high-quality early childhood services and make Kansas the premier place to raise a family.”

The bill’s passage came over objections from several lawmakers about the lack of a fiscal note and opportunity to debate.

Sen. Beverly Gossage, a Eudora Republican, said the bill was the result of three years’ worth of work to put governance of private child care under one umbrella.

“We had licensing under the Department of Education, we had funding under DCF, we had the Children’s Cabinet,” she said. “So the idea was to create the Office of Early Childhood and have a director in that office, overseeing three subdivisions.”

The bill also looks at child care regulations, making changes to allow fewer education requirements for some workers in a child care facility and changing ratios of the number of adults to children, Gossage said.

The bill also changes vaccination requirements, allowing a child’s guardian to avoid the immunization requirements if they provide a signed written statement that immunizations violate sincerely held religious beliefs.

Several legislators raised concerns that such a significant change as adding a new department was coming before the Legislature in a conference committee report, which is negotiated by representatives from both the House and Senate and can’t be amended by either chamber. Sen. Doug Shane, a Louisburg Republican, said he thinks the 63-page bill should be debated in front of the Senate.

“I really appreciate and agree with a lot of changes that are brought forth in the bill, including trying to decouple child care from burdensome regulations, but I’m concerned without thoroughly vetting this and with the creation of a new agency that we set ourselves up for long-term challenges,” he said. “Echoing the famous words of Ronald Reagan, &nbsp;it feels a little bit like we’re from the government and we’re here to help, which is probably what created our child care crisis to begin with.”

In the House, Rep. Barb Wasinger, a Hays Republican, raised concerns about the bill’s fiscal note, or lack thereof.

“It starts a whole new agency, which means more full-time employees, which means more money to the Children’s Cabinet. It means starting a whole new preschool area involved with child care in the school district,” she said. “I think this is a good bill with some bad changes.”

Rep. Susan Ruiz, D-Shawnee, assured the House that consolidating departments under the new banner of an Early Childhood Office doesn’t necessarily mean new costs, but some representatives remained unconvinced.

“I just cannot support something where we don’t know how it is going to affect us financially,” said Rep. Carrie Barth, R-Baldwin City.

Rep. Sean Tarwater, R-Stilwell, argued that the changes to child care regulations are much needed.

“I had a lot of the same concerns that you all do, but over time we worked through it and we think this is a good bill,” he said. “It’s going to open up thousands of slots for day care. One of the No. 1 reasons people are not in the workforce is because they can’t find day care for their children. This goes a long way in solving that problem.”

The bill passed the Senate 30-10 and the House 99-23.

Laura Kelly for her approval.“This bipartisan legislation is a win for businesses, child care providers and most importantly, Kansas children and families,” Kelly said in a statement. “Now, our early childhood system will no longer be bogged down by inefficiencies and bureaucratic red tape. I look forward to signing House Bill 2045 as we streamline access to high-quality early childhood services and make Kansas the premier place to raise a family.”The bill’s passage came over objections from several lawmakers about the lack of a fiscal note and opportunity to debate.Sen. Beverly Gossage, a Eudora Republican, said the bill was the result of three years’ worth of work to put governance of private child care under one umbrella.“We had licensing under the Department of Education, we had funding under DCF, we had the Children’s Cabinet,” she said. “So the idea was to create the Office of Early Childhood and have a director in that office, overseeing three subdivisions.”The bill also looks at child care regulations, making changes to allow fewer education requirements for some workers in a child care facility and changing ratios of the number of adults to children, Gossage said.The bill also changes vaccination requirements, allowing a child’s guardian to avoid the immunization requirements if they provide a signed written statement that immunizations violate sincerely held religious beliefs.Several legislators raised concerns that such a significant change as adding a new department was coming before the Legislature in a conference committee report, which is negotiated by representatives from both the House and Senate and can’t be amended by either chamber. Sen. Doug Shane, a Louisburg Republican, said he thinks the 63-page bill should be debated in front of the Senate.“I really appreciate and agree with a lot of changes that are brought forth in the bill, including trying to decouple child care from burdensome regulations, but I’m concerned without thoroughly vetting this and with the creation of a new agency that we set ourselves up for long-term challenges,” he said. “Echoing the famous words of Ronald Reagan, &nbsp;it feels a little bit like we’re from the government and we’re here to help, which is probably what created our child care crisis to begin with.”In the House, Rep. Barb Wasinger, a Hays Republican, raised concerns about the bill’s fiscal note, or lack thereof.“It starts a whole new agency, which means more full-time employees, which means more money to the Children’s Cabinet. It means starting a whole new preschool area involved with child care in the school district,” she said. “I think this is a good bill with some bad changes.”Rep. Susan Ruiz, D-Shawnee, assured the House that consolidating departments under the new banner of an Early Childhood Office doesn’t necessarily mean new costs, but some representatives remained unconvinced.“I just cannot support something where we don’t know how it is going to affect us financially,” said Rep. Carrie Barth, R-Baldwin City.Rep. Sean Tarwater, R-Stilwell, argued that the changes to child care regulations are much needed.“I had a lot of the same concerns that you all do, but over time we worked through it and we think this is a good bill,” he said. “It’s going to open up thousands of slots for day care. One of the No. 1 reasons people are not in the workforce is because they can’t find day care for their children. This goes a long way in solving that problem.”The bill passed the Senate 30-10 and the House 99-23.

Kansas lawmakers approve creation of new child care department, change regulations

Fort Hays State University celebrated the completion of renovations to its Riegel Building with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Hays Chamber hosted the event Friday at the FHSU University Farm.&nbsp;Grady Dixon, dean of Werth College of STEM, said he was pleased with the turnout, noting that many people are unaware the university operates its own farm.

"There are a lot of people who spend their entire lives in Hays who don't realize that Fort Hays State has its own operational farm as a classroom and laboratory," Dixon said.

The Riegel Building plays a key role in FHSU’s agriculture program, serving a variety of class activities. The recent renovations have expanded its instructional capabilities.

Nearly half of the building was renovated to add a classroom with views of the indoor arena, a mudroom for convenient indoor cleanup, a new manager’s office and a new bathroom.

Jill Arensdorf, FHSU provost and vice president for academic affairs, said the updated facility strengthens agricultural education by providing students with hands-on experience in a real-world environment.

"This new space provides an invaluable opportunity to take notes, study concepts and engage in discussions before applying their knowledge in the field or working with animals.”

The university farm spans about 3,400 acres. Classes such as animal health, meat science, livestock evaluation, anatomy and physiology, and dairy production lab have already been held in the Riegel building.

FHSU sophomore and Agriculture Ambassador Chloe Ecord said the classroom offers endless learning opportunities and will help prepare the next generation of agricultural professionals.

"Thank you for investing in the future leaders of the agriculture industry. We won't let you down," Ecord said.&nbsp;

Sophie Ano, chair of the Department of Agriculture, acknowledged and thanked several individuals at the event, noting that efforts to advocate for the facility’s renovation began about three years ago.

Ano said the facility will also be used for community and youth outreach during the summer.

FHSU unveils renovated Riegel Building at university farm

FHSU’s Department of Music and Theatre will present its seventh-annual FHSU New Music Festival Friday and Saturday, April 25-26. The Saturday concert will present an evening of the music of Dr. Chen Yi and will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Beach-Schmidt Performing Arts Center. Complimentary tickets will be available in the lobby 30 minutes before each concert or in advance at the Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Dr. Chen is a prolific composer who blends Chinese and Western traditions, transcending cultural and musical boundaries. She is an internationally sought-after composer whose works are performed worldwide.

As part of the New Music Festival, under the direction of Dr. Kristin Pisano, Dr. Chen will give a lecture entitled “My Compositions Inspired by Chinese Folk Music” on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Malloy Hall, room 115, on the FHSU campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.&nbsp;

The evening performance on Saturday will feature the world premiere of Chen Yi’s “Remember” for flute, clarinet, violin, and cello. This work was commissioned by the FHSU New Music Ensemble, an ensemble of FHSU music faculty who share a passion for the music of living composers.

The annual FHSU New Music Festival aims to engage, educate, and inform the community about new music.

“We are so excited that Chen Yi will serve as composer in residence for the 2025 festival, and we eagerly anticipate the premiere of ‘Remember,’” Pisano said.&nbsp;

Performers at this concert are Brian Buckstead, violin; Brent Williams, violin; Ben Cline, cello; Gustavo do Carmo, piano; Hilary Shepard, flute; Kristin Pisano, clarinet; Luke Helker, percussion; the FHSU Wind Ensemble, and the Hays High Chamber Singers.

FHSU New Music Festival presents the music of Dr. Chen Yi  

HAYS – On a day when TMP-Marian head coach Melissa Schoepf surpassed
the 150-win plateau, the TMP pitching tossed a pair of shutouts in a
doubleheader sweep of the Holcomb Longhorns Friday in Hays. 

In the day's first game, Holcomb's leadoff hitter singled to
start the game against TMP starter Brynn Rebel. 

Rebel then retired nine straight, and the Monarchs' offense needed
just two and a half innings to run-rule Holcomb 15-0.

Hannah Rose started the offense in the bottom of the inning,
driving in Rebel with an RBI double after a pitch hit Rebel to start the
Monarchs’ first inning.

Brooke Koenigsman added an RBI double scoring Rose for a 2-0
lead.

Koenigsman stole third and scored on a Bria Windholz sacrifice
fly to the first basemen, making it 3-0.

Teagan Gottschalk made it 4-0 with an RBI double, and then Addison
Watson hit an inside-the-park home run that scored two runs and put TMP up 6-0.


The Monarchs' seventh run of the inning came on an error.

Leading 7-0 in the second inning, Rose led off the inning
with a single, and a two-run home run by Brooke Koenigsman made it 9-0 TMP.

Later in the inning, the Monarchs added a run on a Bria Windholz
RBI single. Another came on an Addison Watson sacrifice fly to second base for
an 11-0 Monarchs lead.

Later in the inning, Teagan Gottschalk scored on a passed
ball, and the Moly Helget doubled in two runs, making it 15-0 TMP.

TMP's win over Holcomb was its first since 2021, ending a
seven-game losing streak against the Longhorns.

The Monarchs moved to 10-0 on the season.

Brynn Rebel allowed just one run in three innings and struck
out seven.

Watson and Brooke Koenigsman drove in three runs as the Monarchs
secured the 15-0 victory.

The Monarchs got another stellar start from Monarchs’
starter Bria Windholz in the second game of the day.

The Monarchs scored in every inning of game two.

Windholz, who only allowed a fifth inning lead-off single
and a walk in the second, earned the win in the circle. She struck out a
career-high 11, allowing just three walks in five shutout innings.

She also helped her cause at the plate, driving in a pair of
runners on a single in the first, making it 2-0 TMP.

TMP pushed across three more runs for a 2-0 lead. Brook
Koenigsman scored on a passed ball, Raegan Allen scored on a fielder’s choice,
and Brynn Schoepf scored on a Brynn Rebel single, giving them a 5-0 lead
through the first inning.

In the bottom of the second, Koenigsman led off the inning
with a walk, and then two hitters later, Windholz tripled in two runs for a 6-0
lead.

After a run scored on an error, TMP led 7-0 when Adi Gottschalk
doubled in two more for a 9-0 lead through two innings.

TMP added two more runs in the bottom of the third on an error
and a wild pitch for an 11-0 lead.

Bridget Feldt drove in a run on an RBI groundout in the
fourth inning. Paige Koenigsman’s RBI single scored his sister Brooke, who then
scored on a passed ball for a 14-0 TMP lead.

Bria Windholz finished three-for-three with three RBI. Piper
Simpson collected two RBI’s and scored twice.

🥎Monarchs win streak moves to 10 straight

HOLCOMB – The TMP-Marian baseball team racked up a season
high 18 runs in back-to-back games on their way to a doubleheader sweep of the
Holcomb Longhorns on Friday in Holcomb.

GAME 1: TMP 18, Holcomb 6 In the first game of the doubleheader, the Monarchs scored
in every inning, including 10 runs in the fifth on their way to an 18-6 victory
in five innings.

The two teams traded single runs in the first two innings.

The Monarchs scored on a fielder’s choice; a Grant Nehls
ground out only to see Holcomb score on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the
inning.

Jacob Seib singled home a run in the top of the inning for a
2-1 TMP lead. But Holcomb scored on an error in the bottom of the inning, tying
the game at two.

In the top half of the inning, the Monarchs loaded the bases
with no one out, and Adler Brown singled to right, putting the Monarchs up 3-2.

Two hitters later, Easton Werth walked with the bases loaded,
putting TMP up 4-2. 

In the next at bat, Brown scored on a wild pitch, and then
TMP added two more runs on an error for a 7-2 TMP lead through two and a half
innings.

A Connor Breit RBI single in the fourth inning put TMP up
8-2.

In the top of the fifth inning, TMP loaded the bases on
back-to-back walks and an error, then pushed across a run on an error and a
walk for an 11-2 lead.

With the bases loaded, TMP recorded three straight walks for
a 14-2 lead, and a hit by pitch made it 15-2.

A Noah Dreiling RBI single put TMP up 16-2.

The Monarchs added runs on a hit by pitch and a walk for a
17-2 TMP lead through four and a half innings. 

Holcomb scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth, but TMP
held on for the 18-6 victory.

Adler Brown drove in three runs and Nash Dreiling scored
three times for the Monarchs. 

Caden Dinkel earned the win. He allowed two unearned runs on
one hit, with two walks in four innings.

GAME 2: TMP 18, Holcomb 11 The Monarchs and Longhorns found themselves in a shootout in
game two of the doubleheader, with the Monarchs coming through with an 18-11
victory.

The Monarchs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the
first inning on a Caden Dinkel double.

After Holcomb got a run back in the second, TMP tacked on
two more on a wild pitch and a Grant Nehls RBI single.

Holcomb tied the game at four, scoring three times in the
bottom of the third inning. 

The Longhorns took the lead, scoring six runs in the bottom
of the fifth inning, making it 11-7 Holcomb heading into the top of the sixth
inning.

The Monarchs loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a
hit by pitch. 

They then scored four straight runs, one on a hit by pitch
and three more on three consecutive walks, tying the game at 11.

Ty Schmeidler’s sacrifice fly broke the tie and put TMP up
for good, 12-11.

Caden Dinkel and Adler Brown added RBI singles in the same
inning, putting TMP up 15-11.

TMP tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh
inning, scoring on a Nehls RBI single and two more on an Adler Brown double,
putting TMP up 18-11.

Grant Nehls recorded a career-high four hits and matched his
career-high four RBI. Adler Brown and Caden Dinkel added three RBIs.

Jacob Seib earned the win, allowed six runs, five earned in
an inning and two-thirds. He struck out one with three walks.

⚾Offense carries Monarchs to 8-0 start

HAYS, Kan. - The 20th-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team opened its series against Northeastern State with a 2-0 victory Friday evening at Larks Park. The Tigers (25-9, 19-4 MIAA) collected seven hits on the day, while starter Ty Riley&nbsp;limited the RiverHawks (11-26, 8-15 MIAA) to just two hits in a complete game shutout.

Riley's nine inning shutout was the first-such performance by a Tiger in eight years (Sam Capps, 3/22/17 vs. NWOSU). The senior fanned nine batters and allowed just four baserunners on two hits and two walks. He retired the final 13 batters he faced to improve to 8-1 on the year and lower his ERA to 2.45. Riley now has 88 strikeouts on the year, tied for fourth-most in a single season at FHSU and just seven away from tying the program record.

After leaving one man on in the bottom of the first, the Tigers opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;roped a one-out double into the gap in left center. Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;then worked a walk before Cooper Howell&nbsp;singled to load the bases. Luis Ayala lifted a ball to deep center, allowing Herrmann to easily score to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Fort Hays State doubled its lead in the next inning when Trey DeGarm&nbsp;led off with a single. Brady Kreutzser&nbsp;later singled before Saavedra and Howell worked back-to-back two-out walks, allowing another run to trot home.

The Tigers had plenty of chances to add to their lead, stranding 12 runners on base, but the two runs were more than enough support for Riley. Kreutzer and Herrmann both finished the day 2-for-3 with a double.

Fort Hays State will look to clinch the series win over the RiverHawks Saturday when the teams meet in game two beginning at 3 p.m.

⚾ Riley's gem propels No. 27/20 Tigers past RiverHawks

GARDEN CITY - The Hays High baseball team improved to 5-1 Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Garden City at Clint Lightner Field. The Indians won the opener 9-3 then took the nightcap 9-5 and are now 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the Western Athletics Conference.

The Indians are back on the road Tuesday for a doubleheader in Great Bend.

Game 1: Hays 9, Garden City 3 The Indians scored seven runs in the fourth inning to erase a 2-1 deficit. Brett Rhoades and Jalen Smith opened the inning with back-to-back singles. With one out, Ian McGuire drove in the first run with a single. Landon Hardman added a two-run double to push the lead to 4-2. Following a walk to Johnny Cano, Cooper Johnson singled to right field which scored Hardman. Cano&nbsp; scored on an error on the same play. Back-to-back walks scored Johnson. Carter Graham scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Jalen Smith allowed three runs on five hits with four walks and no strikeouts and picked up the win.

Game 2: Hays 9, Garden City 5 Carter Graham had four hits and drove in five runs. He doubled in the second which scored two runs, singled in the fifth which drove in a run then knocked in two more with a single in the seventh.

The Indians grabbed the early lead on a Jalen Smith RBI single in the first. Garden City scored four in the bottom of the inning to take the lead only to see HHS answer with four in the top of the second. Johnny Cano drove in the first run with a sacrifice bunt. Graham's double tied the game 4-4. He scored the go-ahead run on a Brett Rhoades groundout.

The Buffaloes scored a run in the third but Hays added single runs in the fourth and fifth then tacked on two in the top of the seventh.

Johnny Cano pitched four hitless innings of relief with five strikeouts and no walks and picked up the win.

⚾ Hays High sweeps Garden City to run win-streak to four

WICHITA, Kan. – Fort Hays State softball moved to 23-13 overall and 8-8 in the MIAA with a split of a doubleheader at Newman University on Friday (Apr. 11). An error ended game one in walkoff fashion, 2-1 in favor of the Jets, but the Tigers rebounded for a 5-3 win in the second contest. Newman moved to 7-33 overall and 2-14 in the MIAA.

Game 1: Newman 2, Fort Hays State 1 Fort Hays State struggled to get the bats going throughout the first contest of the day and ultimately fell on a throwing error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Tigers saw Newman put together back-to-back hits with two outs in the fifth to take a 1-0 lead. FHSU finally put a run on the board in the seventh to keep the game going, but then lost the game on a mistake in the bottom half of the inning.

The Tigers had just three hits through the first six innings of the game. A two-out triple followed by an RBI single in the fifth saw the Jets take the lead.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/abbey-duarte/8206">Abbey Duarte</a>&nbsp;had a clutch double to start off the seventh inning.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/taylor-fitzgerald/8203">Taylor Fitzgerald</a>&nbsp;ran for her, moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt, and then scored on a big RBI single by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/regan-curry/8182">Regan Curry</a>.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 5, Newman 3 Newman took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning, but the Tigers pulled even in the third inning and then took the lead on a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/madison-pierce/8188">Madison Pierce</a>&nbsp;2-run home run in the fifth. 🥎 Tigers split with Jets in Wichita

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis improved to 12-5 overall and 2-3 in the MIAA with a 6-1 win over Arkansas-Fort Smith in Hays on Friday. The Tigers took two of three doubles matches for the first point, then won five of six singles contests to close out the win. The Tigers reached 12 wins in a season for the first time in 20 years and still have several matches to play yet. They last reached 12 during the 2004-05 season and it is the first time reaching the mark in their tenure with the MIAA, which began in 2006-07.

In the victory, a pair of Tigers also reached school records.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/suzana-faucz/8130">Suzana Faucz</a>&nbsp;now holds the record for most combined wins in a season by a freshman with 32. She passed Robin Horan's record of 30 set in 1997.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/irina-alfonso/8115">Irina Alfonso</a>&nbsp;is now tied for the school record for most combined wins in a season with 35, matching Helen Brooks' record set in 2005.Faucz took over the freshman record for wins when she and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/irina-alfonso/8115">Irina Alfonso</a>&nbsp;won their No. 2 doubles match 6-2 to help secure the first team point of the match. Three straight-set wins in singles play helped put FHSU up 4-0 and secure the team win. Alfonso breezed through her No. 2 match 6-0, 6-1 to move into a tie for the single-season record for wins overall, now with 17 singles wins and 18 doubles wins.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/grace-unruh/8121">Grace Unruh</a>&nbsp;won the No. 6 match 6-1, 6-2, and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/bethan-gill/8116">Bethan Gill</a>&nbsp;won the No. 5 match 6-2, 6-2.

Faucz rallied to win her No. 3 singles contest after falling in the first set 7-5. She won the second 6-1 and then took the third-set tiebreak 10-5.  </figure>FHSU AthleticsHAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis improved to 12-5 overall and 2-3 in the MIAA with a 6-1 win over Arkansas-Fort Smith in Hays on Friday. The Tigers took two of three doubles matches for the first point, then won five of six singles contests to close out the win. The Tigers reached 12 wins in a season for the first time in 20 years and still have several matches to play yet. They last reached 12 during the 2004-05 season and it is the first time reaching the mark in their tenure with the MIAA, which began in 2006-07.In the victory, a pair of Tigers also reached school records.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/suzana-faucz/8130">Suzana Faucz</a>&nbsp;now holds the record for most combined wins in a season by a freshman with 32. She passed Robin Horan's record of 30 set in 1997.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/irina-alfonso/8115">Irina Alfonso</a>&nbsp;is now tied for the school record for most combined wins in a season with 35, matching Helen Brooks' record set in 2005.Faucz took over the freshman record for wins when she and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/irina-alfonso/8115">Irina Alfonso</a>&nbsp;won their No. 2 doubles match 6-2 to help secure the first team point of the match.
