HAYS – Three TMP pitchers held Russell to just a pair of
runs on six hits and struck out 24 hitters Friday as the Monarchs picked up a
doubleheader sweep of the Broncos at TMP Field.

GAME 1: TMP 11, Russell 1 The Monarchs took advantage of five Russell errors in the
first contest in an 11-1 victory.

Carson Liles earned the win on the mound for TMP. He allowed
just one run and scattered five hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts over six innings.

The Monarchs' offense scored multiple runs in four of the
six innings.

Liles, who hadn’t taken an at-bat all season while
recovering from a hand injury, doubled with the bases loaded in the bottom of
the first inning to put TMP up 3-0.

In the third, the Monarchs scored a run on an error and a wild
pitch for a 5-0 lead.

Ty Schmidler doubled in a pair of runs in the bottom of the
fourth, Grant Nehls added an RBI ground out, and Liles drove in his fourth run
of the game with a single, putting TMP up 9-0

After Russell got a run back in the top of the sixth, TMP
scored on a Caden Dinkel double, and Adler Brown was hit by a pitch with the
bases loaded, giving TMP the 11-1 run-rule victory.

Carson Liles finished two-for-three with four RBI’s. Ty Schmeidler
scored three times, drove in two, and walked twice.

GAME 2: TMP 3, Russell 1 In the second game of the doubleheader, TMP’s Ty Schmeidler
turned in four and a third hitless innings with just one run allowed, a one
walk and nine strikeouts as the Monarchs picked up the 3-1 victory.

Caden Dinkel put the Monarchs on the board in the bottom of
the first inning with an RBI single. It appeared the Russell centerfielder had
thrown out the TMP runner at the plate, but the ball popped out of the catcher's
glove. 

It was a 1-0 TMP lead in the third when Grant Nehls singled in
a pair of runs, giving the Monarchs a 3-0 lead.

That would be more than enough offensive support for Schmeidler and company.&nbsp;

Grant Nehls earned the save. He struck out five and allowed
one hit in two and two—thirds innings.

Ian Nehls scored two runs and walked twice.

TMP improved to 14-2 with the victory and finished 6-0 in the MCL. They travel to Salina on Monday to take on Sacred Heart before playing in the Diamond Classic next weekend.&nbsp;

⚾ TMP pitching holds Russell/Victoria bats in check in doubleheader sweep

EMPORIA, Kan. – Fort Hays State kicked off the 2025 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a solid showing in the combined events Friday (May 2), led by Drew Tolar, who sits in second place in the men's decathlon through five events.

Tolar started the day with a standout performance in the 100-meter dash, running a blazing time of 10.77 to earn 912 points and claim first place in the event. He followed with a leap of 21-8 in the long jump, adding 720 points to his total. In the shot put, he recorded a throw of 39-1.00, which scored 601 points and placed him second in the field. Tolar cleared 5-9.25 in the high jump to pick up 593 points. He closed out the day with another event victory, running 49.24 in the 400-meter dash to collect 850 points. Tolar finished the day with a total of 3,676 points and sits in second place heading into tomorrows final five events.

On the women's side, Kylin Rudzik began the heptathlon with a time of 17.13 in the 100-meter hurdles, scoring 582 points. She cleared 4-6.75 in the high jump to earn 502 points. In the shot put, Rudzik threw 32-2.25, adding 517 points. She wrapped up her day with a 200-meter dash time of 30.06, good for 478 points. Rudzik has accumulated a total of 2,079 points and is in eighth place entering the final three events tomorrow.

Both athletes will look to finish strong as the decathlon and heptathlon wrap up Saturday in Emporia at noon followed by track prelims and distance finals starting at 4:30 p.m.

🏃‍♂️ Strong Start for Tolar in Decathlon on Day One of MIAA Championships

HAYS - Hays High completed a three game season sweep of Garden City with a 13-0 run-rule victory Friday evening at Leo-Harper Field.

The victory propels the Indians to the Western Athletic Conference championship with one game remaining. They will play their final league game in Liberal on May 15th.

Hays (11-6, 10-1) scored all of their runs over the first three innings. The fireworks started with a pair of runs in the first inning followed by six in the second and five in the third.

The runs in the first inning came with two outs. A Brett Rhoades triple scored Tiger Johnson. Rhoades then scored on a single by Trace Jacobs.

All but one of the six runs in the second inning also came with two outs. Landon Hardman drew a walk to open the inning and then scored on Johnny Cano's triple. Cano then scored on a wild pitch to make the score 4-0.

The two-out rally continued with Garden City (5-11, 2-8) miscues. A pair of walks was followed by a Buffalo error for a 6-0 game. Jalen Smith scored on a passed ball and then Bennett Smith scored on a single by Ian McGuire for an 8-0 score.

Cano walked to open the five run third inning. Back-to-back doubles by Johnson and Carter Graham pushed the Indian advantage to double figures at 10-0. Graham scored on a Bennett Smith single and Jalen Smith scored the final run on a passed ball.

Four of the Indians' nine hits were for extra bases. The Indians drew eight walks and were hit by two pitches.&nbsp;

Carter Graham (3-2) pitched four innings for the victory. He needed just 46 pitches and faced 13 batters. Graham allowed one hit, walked one and struck out one. Ian McGuire pitched a scoreless fifth inning allowing one hit.

Hays hosts Diamond Classic next Thursday, Friday and Saturday. As of posting of this story the games will be played at Larks Park due to the construction at Hays High School. Hays High will host TMP on Thursday evening to open the three days.&nbsp;

⚾ Hays High beats Garden City; repeats as WAC Champs

CLAREMORE, Okla. – For the second straight day, the 19th-ranked Fort Hays State Tigers dropped a 1-run heartbreaker to Rogers State. After rallying for three runs in the top of the ninth the Hillcats walked it off Friday afternoon in a 5-4 victory at the RCB Bank Sports Complex.

The Tigers loss coupled with Central Missouri's doubleheader sweep of Newman ends the Tigers hopes of their first-ever MIAA title.

Fort Hays State (32-14, 26-9 MIAA) struck first in the third inning when Isaiah Ural ripped a two-out RBI single to center field, plating Cooper Howell, who had drawn a walk earlier in the inning.

After Rogers State responded with runs in the third, fourth, and fifth to take a 3-1 lead, the Tigers stayed within striking distance. The Hillcats tacked on another in the sixth, making it 4-1, and kept the Tigers quiet until the ninth.

Facing a three-run deficit in their final at-bat, the Tigers mounted a furious comeback. Luis Ayala led off the frame with a double to left before Ural followed with a single. After a flyout, Derek Woolwine stepped up and delivered a clutch three-run blast to left field, tying the game at 4-4 with his third home run of the series.

However, Rogers State answered in the bottom of the ninth. After a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt, the Hillcats loaded the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly brought home the winning run as Fort Hays fell in walk-off fashion.

Woolwine finished with three RBIs, all coming in the ninth, while Ural went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Trey DeGarmo, Elliott Herrmann, Ayala, and Brady Kreutzer each added extra-base hits in the Tigers' 12-hit effort.

On the mound, Cade Flaherty started and went 4.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. Brandon Chavez took the loss, surrendering the winning run in the ninth to fall to 6-2 on the season.

Fort Hays State will close out the regular season and look to salvage the final game of the series on Saturday at noon.

Convention & Visitors Bureau: May events in Hays include local graduation ceremonies

Allen Cyril Pfeifer, age 89, of Hays, Kansas, formerly of St.
Peter, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at Harry Hynes Hospice
in Wichita.

Born on February 21, 1936, in St. Peter to Frank J. and Catherine
(Dinkel) Pfeifer, Allen grew up rooted in faith, family, and the farming
traditions of western Kansas. On November 8, 1958, he married the love of his
life, Alfrieda Werth, in Antonino. Together, they built a life grounded in
love, humility, and dedication.

Allen graduated from Morland High School. He continued his studies
at Fort Hays State University and Kansas State University before returning home
to help with the family business. He also started a propane delivery service
and eventually began his own farming operation.

Allen enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, helping his
children and grandchildren with their projects as well as sharing stories. He
was a member of St. Anthony Church, St. Peter; Immaculate Heart of Mary Church,
Hays; and the 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus. Allen was a humble and kind man,
who led by example and gave generously of his time and talents.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Alfrieda; his children,
Gerald Pfeifer (Marcia) of Hays, Kathleen Pfeifer of Hays, Theresa Pfeifer
(Ken) of Evergreen, Colorado, Diane Scott (Virgil) of Broomfield, Colorado, and
Donna Wallace (Jim) of Shawnee, Kansas; his grandchildren, Nicole Scott,
Allison Zimmerman (Casey), Melissa Pfeifer, Tiffany Rohleder (Joe), Garrett
Pfeifer, Jessica, Sara, and Carrie Wallace; and great-grandchildren, Xavier,
Adrian, and Sebastian Zimmerman. He is also survived by brothers Clarence
Pfeifer (Thelma) and Lloyd Pfeifer (Linda); sisters Caroline Flax, and
Catherine Heier (Felix); and sister-in-law Anna Pfeifer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Carol
Pfeifer; brothers Albert Pfeifer (Jenny and Doris), Alvin Pfeifer; sisters
Helen Zimmerman (Jake), Pauline Zerr (Clem); and brother-in-law Tony Flax.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, May 5, 2025, at
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's
Cemetery, Hays.

Visitation will be Sunday, May 4, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at
Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory–Brock's Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays. A Knights
of Columbus Rosary will be prayed at 6:45 PM, followed by a parish vigil at
7:00 PM. Visitation will continue Monday from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM at Brock's.

Memorial contributions may be made to Immaculate Heart of Mary

 </figure>Allen Cyril Pfeifer, age 89, of Hays, Kansas, formerly of St.
Peter, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at Harry Hynes Hospice
in Wichita.Born on February 21, 1936, in St. Peter to Frank J. and Catherine
(Dinkel) Pfeifer, Allen grew up rooted in faith, family, and the farming
traditions of western Kansas. On November 8, 1958, he married the love of his
life, Alfrieda Werth, in Antonino. Together, they built a life grounded in
love, humility, and dedication.Allen graduated from Morland High School. He continued his studies
at Fort Hays State University and Kansas State University before returning home
to help with the family business. He also started a propane delivery service
and eventually began his own farming operation.Allen enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, helping his
children and grandchildren with their projects as well as sharing stories. He
was a member of St. Anthony Church, St. Peter; Immaculate Heart of Mary Church,
Hays; and the 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus. Allen was a humble and kind man,
who led by example and gave generously of his time and talents.He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Alfrieda; his children,
Gerald Pfeifer (Marcia) of Hays, Kathleen Pfeifer of Hays, Theresa Pfeifer
(Ken) of Evergreen, Colorado, Diane Scott (Virgil) of Broomfield, Colorado, and
Donna Wallace (Jim) of Shawnee, Kansas; his grandchildren, Nicole Scott,
Allison Zimmerman (Casey), Melissa Pfeifer, Tiffany Rohleder (Joe), Garrett
Pfeifer, Jessica, Sara, and Carrie Wallace; and great-grandchildren, Xavier,
Adrian, and Sebastian Zimmerman. He is also survived by brothers Clarence
Pfeifer (Thelma) and Lloyd Pfeifer (Linda); sisters Caroline Flax, and
Catherine Heier (Felix); and sister-in-law Anna Pfeifer.He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Carol
Pfeifer; brothers Albert Pfeifer (Jenny and Doris), Alvin Pfeifer; sisters
Helen Zimmerman (Jake), Pauline Zerr (Clem); and brother-in-law Tony Flax.A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, May 5, 2025, at
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's
Cemetery, Hays.Visitation will be Sunday, May 4, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at

Mary Joan Weigel was born on
December 8, 1940, in Russell, KS to Joseph and Eleanor (Tholen) Scheck and
passed away on April 28, 2025, in Russell Kansas at the age of 84 years, 4
months and 20 days.

Joanie grew up in Gorham, Kansas,
where she attended St. Mary Catholic School and graduated from Gorham High
School. She later earned an associate degree in business from Brown Mackie
College.&nbsp; A true jack-of-all-trades and
fantastic interior designer, Joanie brought her dedication and creativity to
every role she held. Over the years, she worked in an attorney’s office, a
lumber yard, an abstract and title company, as well as in restaurants and
retail. No matter the job, Joanie’s strong work ethic, cheerful presence, and
knack for connecting with others left a lasting impression.

Joanie was united in marriage to
Edward J Weigel on November 14,1959, and had 6 children in 8 years, David,
Deidra, Michelle, Mike, Joey, and Candace. Edward passed away on September 13,
1986, in Pratt.&nbsp; Joanie met her
significant other, Ron Arneson, and for the past 42 years they shared a life
full of love, laughter, and memories—dancing together, cheering on their
grandkids at games, and hosting cherished holiday get togethers. Most notable
was the Christmas season, when Joanie transformed their home into a holiday
wonderland with her stunning decorations and numerous beautifully adorned
trees. Her attention to detail and festive spirit made the season magical for
everyone lucky enough to be part of it.&nbsp; Joanie
was truly one of a kind—a devoted mom, Grammie, aunt, sister, and friend. She
had an unmatched talent for decorating, able to make something out of nothing
and turn the ordinary into something beautiful. Not only did she transform her
own home with warmth and creativity, but she also helped others decorate
theirs—painting rooms, hanging wallpaper, and adding her special touch wherever
it was needed. Her heart was pure gold. She prayed for everyone and lived her
life in service to others, always putting the needs of family, friends, and
community before her own.&nbsp; A deeply
faithful woman, Joanie was an active member of St. Mary’s Church in Gorham. She
played the organ, taught CCD, decorated the church for every season, and was a
proud member of the Daughters of Isabella.

Joanie was preceded in death by
her parents, Joseph and Eleanor Scheck, brother, Donald Scheck, sister Myra
Poage, brother-in-law, Jim Gould, brother-in-law, Chuck Moore, sister-in-law,
Barb Scheck, grandson, Jadyn Arneson, and great grandson Stephan Dreiling.

Two Early Childhood Connections staff members have been honored with Kansas Head Start awards.

Donna Hudson-Hamilton, Early Childhood Connections director, was recently awarded the Kansas Children's Champion Award.

"The impact she has made on the tiny kiddos, their families and the entire Head Start program is remarkable.  Hays 489 is so grateful to have her as a leader within our district," the district said in a Facebook post.

Hudson-Hamilton will be retiring at the end of this school year.

Sharon Beougher, Early Childhood Connections education coordinator, was named the Support Staff of the Year.&nbsp;

The Hays Arts Council is proud to present the 29th Annual Ellis County Famous Figures project for fifth-grade students, again culminating in a live final competition in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center! 

This project has always been so popular, and we are happy to present this educational, cultural and entertaining event through the support of the Hays Rotary Club. 

“Famous Figures” is a competition open to fifth-grade students throughout Ellis County. The contest involves students researching, developing, memorizing and then presenting a favorite character from history.

The character can be living or deceased, but not fictional, and the “Famous Figure” represents character traits of a positive&nbsp;role model. This competition is being offered to promote thinking and writing in a creative manner, the use of research skills, awareness and appreciation of the qualities of positive leadership, as well as nurturing acting and public speaking skills.

Two contestants are allowed per fifth-grade classroom. This is an individual competition (no “duet” performances).

Order of presentation will be random and, until the awards presentation, students will be identified by character only, not by school or their name.

In the case of illness or other emergency, substitutes will be allowed. 

The county-wide competition will be from 8:20 to 11:45 am Friday in the&nbsp; Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.

Fifth-grade classes are not only welcome but are encouraged to attend as the support is important to the competitors and the informational and educational aspects of the event are fantastic, whether the students are finalists or audience members.

The names of the students and their schools will be confidential until judging is complete.

The Diocese of Salina is pleased to announce the appointment of Curtis Hammeke as the new president of Hays Catholic Schools, encompassing Thomas More Prep-Marian and Holy Family Elementary. 

Hammeke brings a wealth of leadership experience and a deep commitment to Catholic education, positioning him to advance the mission and vision of our schools. 

A native of Great Bend, Hammeke has dedicated nearly three decades to Fort Hays State University. His journey began as a baseball student-athlete in the mid-1980s, followed by five years as head coach of the Tiger baseball team from 1991 to 1996. Hammeke has served as the director of athletics at FHSU since 2004. Under his leadership, the university's athletic programs have achieved significant success at the NCAA Division II level. 

His tenure is marked by strategic planning, project management, and community engagement, reflecting his ability to lead complex organizations effectively. 

In his new role, Hammeke will be responsible for providing visionary leadership, managing capital improvement projects, and fostering relationships with key stakeholders.

  A key aspect of his leadership will include working closely with the Advancement Director to enhance fundraising efforts, strengthen donor relations, and expand outreach to alumni and community partners. 

Additionally, Hammeke will collaborate closely with Holy Family Elementary Principal Mandy Meagher and Thomas More Prep-Marian Principal Chad Meitner to support the schools' academic excellence, Catholic identity, and student success. By fostering a unified vision across both schools, Hammeke, alongside the principals, will ensure a strong future for Hays Catholic Schools. 

Hammeke and his wife, Annette, have three children - Fr. Andy, Alicia, and Nicholas - and are proud grandparents to five grandchildren: Emery, Kollins, Kolter, Turner, and Jack. The Hammekes are deeply rooted in the Catholic faith and the Hays community, and their family values reflect the mission of Hays Catholic Schools.

Curtis Hammeke appointed president of Hays Catholic Schools by Diocese of Salina

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After a great season that saw both players produce the two highest win totals for a single-season in the program's NCAA Division II history, Irina Alfonso and Suzana Faucz earned selections on the 2025 All-MIAA Women's Tennis Team, released on Thursday (May 1). Alfonso was one of 15 student-athletes named to the team for singles play and she joined her doubles partner Faucz as honorable mention selections in doubles play. Alfonso and Faucz are the first All-MIAA Team selections for the Tigers since Natalie Lubbers in 2016-17.

Alfonso put together a 40-win season in singles and doubles combined, winning 75 percent of her matches for the 2025 season with an overall record of 40-13. The 40 wins is a new single-season record at Fort Hays State. Alfonso paired with freshman standout Suzana Faucz for 21 of the wins in doubles, and produced 19 wins in singles play. She was a perfect 4-0 when playing the No. 1 position in the singles lineup, and 12-5 at the No. 2 position which she played for the majority of the season. Alfonso was 12-6 against NCAA Division II competition in singles play. Alfonso and Faucz went 13-6 against NCAA Division II competition in doubles play.

Impressively, Alfonso and Faucz's 21 wins in doubles play tied the FHSU career record for wins for a doubles pair all in just one season. It matched the 21 produced by Robin Horan and Courtney Olsen in the late 1990s.

Alfonso went 5-3 in MIAA singles play, all at the No. 2 position, which included a win over nationally ranked Alva Norberg of Northwest Missouri State, who is also on the All-MIAA Team. Alfonso and Faucz went 5-4 in MIAA play in doubles, all at the No. 2 position, which included a win over Nebraska-Kearney while the Lopers were ranked No. 19 nationally as a team.

Faucz had a big freshman year at Fort Hays State with 36 wins in doubles and singles combined. She partnered with Irina Alfonso for 21 doubles wins and notched 15 singles wins throughout the year, primarily playing at the No. 3 position. Her 36 wins passed the former freshman single-season record by six, but also went past the former single-season wins record overall and ranks second in that category behind Alfonso.

 </figure>FHSU AthleticsKANSAS CITY, Mo. – After a great season that saw both players produce the two highest win totals for a single-season in the program's NCAA Division II history, Irina Alfonso and Suzana Faucz earned selections on the 2025 All-MIAA Women's Tennis Team, released on Thursday (May 1). Alfonso was one of 15 student-athletes named to the team for singles play and she joined her doubles partner Faucz as honorable mention selections in doubles play. Alfonso and Faucz are the first All-MIAA Team selections for the Tigers since Natalie Lubbers in 2016-17.Alfonso put together a 40-win season in singles and doubles combined, winning 75 percent of her matches for the 2025 season with an overall record of 40-13. The 40 wins is a new single-season record at Fort Hays State. Alfonso paired with freshman standout Suzana Faucz for 21 of the wins in doubles, and produced 19 wins in singles play. She was a perfect 4-0 when playing the No. 1 position in the singles lineup, and 12-5 at the No. 2 position which she played for the majority of the season. Alfonso was 12-6 against NCAA Division II competition in singles play. Alfonso and Faucz went 13-6 against NCAA Division II competition in doubles play.Impressively, Alfonso and Faucz's 21 wins in doubles play tied the FHSU career record for wins for a doubles pair all in just one season. It matched the 21 produced by Robin Horan and Courtney Olsen in the late 1990s.Alfonso went 5-3 in MIAA singles play, all at the No. 2 position, which included a win over nationally ranked Alva Norberg of Northwest Missouri State, who is also on the All-MIAA Team. Alfonso and Faucz went 5-4 in MIAA play in doubles, all at the No. 2 position, which included a win over Nebraska-Kearney while the Lopers were ranked No. 19 nationally as a team.Faucz had a big freshman year at Fort Hays State with 36 wins in doubles and singles combined. She partnered with Irina Alfonso for 21 doubles wins and notched 15 singles wins throughout the year, primarily playing at the No. 3 position. 🎾 FHSU's Alfonso and Faucz named to All-MIAA team

Lonnie
Keith Wise, of Russell, Kansas, and formerly of Plainville, Kansas, passed away
on February 8, 2025, at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville, at the
age of 77. He was born on June 15, 1947, to Norman Keith and Ietta Mae (Hrabe)
Wise in Hays, Kansas. He married Kathy M. (Berens) Wise on September 29, 2018, in
Russell, Kansas.

Lonnie
grew up in Plainville where he graduated from Plainville High School in 1965.
He had a long and dedicated career as a maintenance technician at EnerSys
battery plant and Cross Manufacturing, in addition to working as a farmer for
many years.

A proud Eagle
Scout, Lonnie cherished the time he spent at Boy Scout camp in Abilene, Kansas.
During high school Lonnie held several offices in FFA. &nbsp;Lonnie and his sister Joan were avid
competitors in Fox Trot dancing, frequently winning championships. He was a
lifelong fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas State Wildcats, often found with
either a Coke or coffee in his hand, cheering them on with unwavering
enthusiasm. Lonnie’s love for animals was well known, and he found great
fulfillment in helping others. As a longtime member of Alcoholics Anonymous,
Lonnie completed the program and mentored hundreds of men over the years,
inspiring many with his strength, compassion, and wisdom. In addition, his
generosity extended to being a regular blood donor, donating 10 gallons of
blood over the years, knowing his rare blood type would make a difference to
those in need. He also was a generous donor to the United Way of Ellis County.
He donated every paycheck for 18 years. 

Lonnie is
survived by his wife, Kathy Wise of Russell; his children, Stephanie Berens of
Ohio, Carey Wise of Olathe, Lanell (Steven) Bailey, Jeremiah Lumpkin of
Wichita; siblings, Vickie (Jack) Ashbaugh of Hill City, Pat (Alvin)
Mills-Harbert of Warr Acres, Oklahoma, Fred (Val) Wise of Cheney, Kansas; brothers-in-law,
Jeff Mcintyre of Florence, Arizona, Larry Berens (Valarie) of Hot Springs,
South Dakota, Kevin Moren of, South Dakota; sisters-in-law, Cheryl (Tom)
Lathrop of Hot Springs, South Dakota, Julie Fleharty of Idaho; six
grandchildren, Daylon (Andrew) Ingalls, Logan Hertel, Harley (Grace) Hazlett, Phillip
(Olivia) Hazlett, Roseanna Hazlett, Cole Wise; six great-grandchildren, Elijah,
Adalynn, Silas, Savannah, Judah, Vivienne; numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces

He was

memorial service will be held on Friday, May 9, 2025, at 11 AM, at the First
Christian Church in Plainville.

The Ellis County Commission discussed with city of Ellis officials the replacement of the 10th Street bridge in Ellis, which has fallen into disrepair.

The commissioners went on a road tour, led by the Ellis County Public Works Department, on Wednesday to personally assess the county's roads and bridges that require attention.

The day began near the city of Ellis's 10th Street bridge, which was the center of discussion for replacement designs, and how costs and responsibilities would be divided.

"The bridge is wider than what normal bridges are,"&nbsp;Ellis County administrator Darin Myers said. "Most likely that's due to the way it was designed back in the day for the city of Ellis."

Ellis County Public Works Director Brendan Mackay informed attendees the bridge, including its road surface, is aging and deteriorating structurally.&nbsp;

"There's asphalt over it. The bridge looks fine, but it's not fine. [The image] shows the delamination of the layers underneath the asphalt. That's hollow areas," he said.

Mackay outlined three options: replacing just the deck, replacing the entire superstructure or fully rebuilding the bridge, including the piers.

City of Ellis council members emphasized the importance of collaborating to ensure the bridge is rebuilt correctly, cost-effectively and in a manner that benefits the community.

While the county owns the bridge, its location within city limits has prompted discussions about sharing costs if the design exceeds standard specifications.

Myers said the county would cover the cost of a standard-width bridge, but any additional features, such as sidewalks or bike lanes, would fall under the City of Ellis’ financial responsibility.

Mackay mentioned the Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program grant as a potential funding source for the county and city. A complete bridge replacement is estimated to cost about $2.5 million.

Myers said the best choice is to fully replace the bridge, while the second option—repairing only the structure above the piers—may be less expensive upfront, but is not a viable long-term solution.

"If we leave the piers but put a whole new steel structure... that may get you 40 to 50 years and then you now have a 100-year bridge sitting on top of a pier that's only worth 40 years," he said. "Yes, it's cheaper, but it could be something that costs us more in the years ahead."

County officials agreed to continue collaborating with the city of Ellis, but emphasized the city needs to decide on sidewalk and width preferences to direct engineers and avoid unnecessary expenses.

The Ellis County Commission also visited Catherine Road, where reconstruction is underway to address deteriorating asphalt. Crews are rebuilding the road base in preparation for a new asphalt overlay.

Vineyard Road and Commerce Parkway is a collaborative project between the Ellis County Commission and the city of Hays. The road base has been rebuilt, and ditches have been installed for improved drainage. An asphalt overlay is scheduled for later this summer.

The county commission toured multiple areas of Old Highway 40, including east of Walker Avenue and the interchange at Old Highway 40 and Eighth Street.

Mackay said plans are in place to repair cracked panels at the interchange later this year and to redesign the crossovers at the location.

Toulon Avenue has developed pavement ruts that create noticeable wobbling, especially for larger and heavier vehicles. The scheduled overlay was moved up from 2026 to 2025.

Mackay said the county also plans to seek grants to widen the road and add shoulders.

Ellis County Commission discuss bridge replacement in city of Ellis

The Fort Hays State University Rodeo inducted its third class into the 2025 FHSU Rodeo Hall of Fame inside the Schenk Building at the Ellis County Fairgrounds on Saturday, April 19. The inductees were FHSU alumni who were former student members of the rodeo team or campus leaders who supported the rodeo program.

The first group of Hall of Fame inductees were all members of the 1974 College National Finals Rodeo Team. The women’s team of Colette Graves, Kathy Geier, and Cindy Elam finished that season number two in the nation. The men’s team of that season, Bronc Rumford, Jerry Beagley, Lyle Sankey, Donnie Simpson, Steve Fenster and Stan Schmidt finished sixth in the nation.

Other inductees were recognized for their support of the FHSU Rodeo: Dr. Ed Hammond, FHSU President Emeritus and longest-tenured Fort Hays president, and Kevin Rich, professional rodeo bullfighter and freestyle bullfighter.

The reception marked the first time in 50 years that members of the 1974 team were together since they competed at the finals in Bozeman, Mont.

“Two of three of these guys I haven’t seen since we left Bozeman,” Jerry Beagley said. “It was in ’73 that we missed going to the finals, and I was so upset. Then, in ’74, I won the region in bareback riding and the bull riding, but the team did really well that year. I also got to rope calves up there and won the Intercollegiate Champion Bareback Rider of the Nation for Hays.”

Since his retirement, Beagley has owned Jerry Beagley Braiding Co. Inc., which specializes in manufacturing rodeo and horse braiding products while advancing Western culture worldwide.

“I’m still involved in rodeo manufacturing, horse products, and stuff,” he said. “It’s something that, as you get older, you’ve got to stay involved in to keep the industry going.”

In addition to being inducted, Lyle Sankey and Kathy Geier celebrated their 50th&nbsp;wedding anniversary. They were married in 1975 after meeting each other at a rodeo.

“We met at an amateur rodeo in Salina and didn’t really connect much,” Kathy said. “We both thought there could be something [between us] someday. Then, when we met again when he transferred here, we started going out.”

The couple reflected on their success with the team upon their induction. Lyle won the 1974 regional title in saddle bronc riding before transferring to Fort Hays and is one of only four men to qualify for the National Finals Rodeo in all three rough riding events in bull riding. Kathy qualified for all three events in the women’s finals.

“It was a great time for me,” Kathy said. “College rodeo was huge fun, and it helped me learn a lot of stuff, not just college stuff, but my rodeo career as well. It’s fun to come back and see people we haven’t seen for a long time, and that was a direct result of the induction.”

Hammond was credited for saving the FHSU Rodeo program from financial turmoil during his tenure as President from 1987 to 2014. He contributed to its growth through his support and knowledge of the sport.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be inducted,” Hammond said. “The program here is nationally renowned and has produced so many outstanding professional rodeo riders, clowns, and bullfighters. I can guarantee that my horsemanship had nothing to do with me getting into the Hall of Fame. It was because I was able to help stabilize the program and get it appropriately funded. And, of course, hiring Bronc Rumford made the job easy.”

Rumford qualified for the CNFR three times and placed third in the All-Around for the 1974 team. He then served as the head coach for the FHSU Rodeo for 15 years.

“The number of people that have been part of the Fort Hays State [Rodeo] program has been amazing,” Rumford said. “Dr. Hammond, President Mason, and Dr. Ano have created a place where we could do what we do,” Rumford mentioned that his induction not only made him proud but also reminded him of the friendships he has made. “It’s an honor to be recognized with them.”

 </figure>By RORY MOORE FHSU NewsThe Fort Hays State University Rodeo inducted its third class into the 2025 FHSU Rodeo Hall of Fame inside the Schenk Building at the Ellis County Fairgrounds on Saturday, April 19. The inductees were FHSU alumni who were former student members of the rodeo team or campus leaders who supported the rodeo program.The first group of Hall of Fame inductees were all members of the 1974 College National Finals Rodeo Team. The women’s team of Colette Graves, Kathy Geier, and Cindy Elam finished that season number two in the nation. The men’s team of that season, Bronc Rumford, Jerry Beagley, Lyle Sankey, Donnie Simpson, Steve Fenster and Stan Schmidt finished sixth in the nation.Other inductees were recognized for their support of the FHSU Rodeo: Dr. Ed Hammond, FHSU President Emeritus and longest-tenured Fort Hays president, and Kevin Rich, professional rodeo bullfighter and freestyle bullfighter.The reception marked the first time in 50 years that members of the 1974 team were together since they competed at the finals in Bozeman, Mont.“Two of three of these guys I haven’t seen since we left Bozeman,” Jerry Beagley said. “It was in ’73 that we missed going to the finals, and I was so upset. Then, in ’74, I won the region in bareback riding and the bull riding, but the team did really well that year. I also got to rope calves up there and won the Intercollegiate Champion Bareback Rider of the Nation for Hays.”Since his retirement, Beagley has owned Jerry Beagley Braiding Co. Inc., which specializes in manufacturing rodeo and horse braiding products while advancing Western culture worldwide.“I’m still involved in rodeo manufacturing, horse products, and stuff,” he said. “It’s something that, as you get older, you’ve got to stay involved in to keep the industry going.”In addition to being inducted, Lyle Sankey and Kathy Geier celebrated their 50th&nbsp;wedding anniversary. They were married in 1975 after meeting each other at a rodeo.“We met at an amateur rodeo in Salina and didn’t really connect much,” Kathy said. “We both thought there could be something [between us] someday. Then, when we met again when he transferred here, we started going out.”The couple reflected on their success with the team upon their induction. Lyle won the 1974 regional title in saddle bronc riding before transferring to Fort Hays and is one of only four men to qualify for the National Finals Rodeo in all three rough riding events in bull riding. Kathy qualified for all three events in the women’s finals.“It was a great time for me,” Kathy said. “College rodeo was huge fun, and it helped me learn a lot of stuff, not just college stuff, but my rodeo career as well. Fort Hays Rodeo inducts alums into 2025 Hall of Fame

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University's Silver Key Sophomore Honorary, a leadership honor society emphasizing community service, has selected 41 new members for the 2025-2026 academic year.

To be eligible for Silver Key, students must have at least a 3.0 grade point average, be a 2025 high school graduate and be in their freshman year at the university.

Silver Key members participate in various community service projects throughout the semester. Past projects have included hosting children from the Boys and Girls Club at K-State Athletics events; partnering with the K-State Recycling Center; writing cards and making quilts for a local veterans' center; collecting donations for the Manhattan Emergency Shelter; cleaning up highways and neighborhoods; and visiting the Stoneybrook and Meadowlark senior living communities in Manhattan.

Each semester Fort Hays Tech | North Central awards a member of our staff or faculty with a 212° Award. 

The purpose of the 212° Award is to recognize individuals who demonstrate superior dedication and the willingness to go that extra degree! 212 degrees is the boiling point of water. Everyone has watched it happen as water goes from still to rumbling when it reaches that threshold. That boiling point is a transformation point. 

Recipients of this award are employees who voluntarily go above and beyond the call of duty and are transformational leaders at the college. These employees demonstrate a positive attitude and commitment to their profession, students, fellow employees, and a loyalty to the mission of Fort Hays Tech | North Central.

The recipient of 2025 Fall 212 Award is Tricia Cline. Tricia is the Dean of Enrollment for the Beloit and Hays campuses.

Tricia Cline is a fantastic employee and colleague, very deserving of this recognition," said Fort Hays Tech | North Central President, Eric Burks. "In addition to excelling at her typical duties, she also led us through a complete re-branding and the implementation of a new software system.
