There will be two separate video broadcasts.

Only the Hays High games will be streamed. All games are being played at Hays High School.

The 20th annual John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days (SACAD) was held on April 24. Despite an early threat of rain, the clearing weather provided a pleasant backdrop for this year’s expanded event.

Created in 2005 to allow university faculty, staff, and students to share their scholarly and creative work, SACAD has grown into an inclusive week-long event culminating with presentations of scholarly and creative works at an on-campus open house. This year, presentations were held in multiple campus locations to better display the impressive array of projects and posters.

Hosted within the Center for Applied Technology building, students and faculty demonstrated some of their latest innovations with 21 unique and innovative displays, including various works of wood, metal, and plastics, as well as a battery-powered vehicle designed by Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science (KAMS) students.

In the Schmidt Foundation Center for Art and Design, students displayed more than 120 art and design works. There were sculptures in a wide array of materials, paintings, and drawings, to name just a few of the types of creative works from this year’s artists. &nbsp;

The traditional poster presentations, held in the Memorial Union, also saw growth this year, with 100 submissions for the in-person poster session. Posters were available for viewing all day in the FHSU Memorial Union, which also housed the Meet-the-Author event and a new Community Engaged Showcase.&nbsp;The Community Engaged Showcase included presentations from LDRS 310, a course that requires students to develop community partner projects.&nbsp;

Also included this year were several musical performances. There were a record-breaking 262 submissions for SACAD. As observers made their way through the various performances and displays throughout campus, they were invited to vote on two&nbsp;People’s Choice Awards, one for scholarly works and one for creative works.

• Ilsle Trejo, a junior Social Work major from Sublette, &amp; Miguel Gabino Lopez, a senior Social Work major from Elkhart:&nbsp;DEI From The Perspective of Racially and Sexually Minority Social Work Students— People’s Choice Award winners for the academic poster display.&nbsp;Annette Clarke Jones and Octavio Ramirez&nbsp;were faculty mentors.

“The 20th anniversary of the John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days (SACAD) showcased events from prior years, as well as the premiere of two new additions,” said Dr. April Terry, associate professor of criminal justice and Scholarship Environment Committee (SEC) Event Coordinator. “Once again, we’ve heard positive feedback on utilizing cross-campus locations with increased interest in virtual accessibility of the academic posters and creative works.”

The annual SACAD event continues to evolve, Terry said, adding that she believes this year provided innovative opportunities to showcase the work of FHSU faculty, staff, and students.

The FHSU Scholarly and Creative Activities Day is named in honor of the late Dr. John F. Heinrichs (1957-2014). A popular Geosciences professor, an internationally renowned Arctic researcher, and an esteemed colleague, Dr. Heinrichs had a tremendous impact on Fort Hays State University. He was a key supporter of faculty and student research, and his efforts were largely responsible for launching Research and Creative Activities Week, now known as John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activities Day, in his honor.

FHSU’s John Heinrichs Scholarly, Creative Activity Days marks 20th anniversary

The Fort Hays State University Alumni Office proudly announced its 2025 commencement award recipients.

 Family, friends, and the FHSU community gathered to celebrate the tremendous achievements of this year’s Torch, Lighthouse, and Pilot Award recipients, recognizing the outstanding efforts and achievements of FHSU students and faculty throughout the 2024-25 academic year.

Ella Burrows, a senior political science major, received the Torch Award, and Allyson Baloga earned this year’s Lighthouse Award as an exceptional graduate student earning an education specialist degree in school psychology.

Eric Deneault was honored with the Pilot Award for his work as a faculty member in the Department of Applied Technology.

Ella Burrows is a Fort Hays State University senior majoring in Political Science with a pre-law concentration from Satanta. As a fourth-generation Tiger, Ella takes great pride in her family’s long-standing connection to FHSU, with 17 degrees earned and counting. Interestingly, her mother, Karen (Meier) Burrows, was honored with the Torch Award in 1998.

Throughout Ella’s time at Fort Hays State, she has held significant leadership roles, including two consecutive terms as Student Government Association president. Serving in this position has allowed Ella to advocate for the university at local, state, and national levels, including representing FHSU at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities Day in Washington, D.C.

Ella is proud of her involvement in coordinating the Kansas Student Government Conference and creating the FHSU Period Project, supplying free period products to the university campus.

“Perhaps more important than earning exemplary grades, Ella enjoys learning new things and seeks out opportunities to expand her knowledge in diverse areas,” said Wendy Rohleder-Sook, chair of the Department of Communication Studies, Law, and Political Science.

Aside from participating in the Student Government Association, Ella has been an active Delta Zeta sorority member, serving in multiple leadership positions. She has also participated in on-campus organizations such as Pi Sigma Alpha (a political science honor society), Order of Omega, and Phi Kappa Phi. Ella has received the Newman Civic Fellowship and the Florence Hood Milner Award during her studies at FHSU. As Ella prepares to attend Washburn University to earn a law degree, she is committed to maintaining her leadership skills in the future.

Allyson Baloga is a graduate student at Fort Hays State, earning her education specialist degree in school psychology. As a military spouse, Allyson has worked hard to follow her dream of becoming a school psychologist. Allyson’s thoughtful approach to academic endeavors, advocacy efforts, and service to others has shone through her work at FHSU and in her military community. Her contributions to the field of school psychology include coauthoring an article featured in “Communiqué,” the journal of the National Association of School Psychologists, and presenting at a national conference. Allyson has provided legislative testimony advocating for improved access to school psychology services, especially for military families, a cause close to her heart.

“Allyson demonstrates unmatched reliability, initiative, and organizational skills,” said Whitney Whitaker, Department of Psychology chair. “She handles her responsibilities with the poise and expertise of an experienced professor.”

Allyson serves as a student leader for NASP (National Association of School Psychologists), and a senate member of the FHSU Online Student Government Association, where she connects with fellow online FHSU students. Allyson is a graduate teaching assistant, regularly supporting faculty with grading, course monitoring, course refinement, and student support. Faculty members frequently comment on Allyson’s reliability, her ability to inspire and engage students, and her skill to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Allyson exemplifies the spirit of the Lighthouse Award and remains dedicated to making a difference in the field of school psychology as her career progresses.

Eric Deneault believes teaching is more than books and lectures – it’s about making a lasting impact on a student’s life. Eric realized education was his calling as a freshman in high school when he stepped into his first drafting class and experienced learning in a way he hadn’t before. Everything clicked when he realized education could be engaging, rigorous, and rewarding. Each day in his applied technology classes, Eric strives to cultivate lifelong learners who will thrive in their careers, contribute meaningfully to society, and carry forward the spirit of mentorship and growth.

“He connects with students not just intellectually, but personally. He motivates, challenges, and supports them every step of the way,” said Kim Stewart, Department of Applied Technology chair. “He doesn’t just teach students; he believes in them, and in turn, they believe in themselves.”

Students often comment on Eric’s deep knowledge of engineering drawings, architectural and mechanical design, computer-aided drafting, and the building construction industry. However, his supportive and motivating teaching style keeps students engaged in learning. Despite having to work hard, Eric’s one-on-one approach helps students thoroughly enjoy his classes.

Beyond the classroom, Eric has had several scholarly pieces published locally, nationally, and internationally, and regularly presents his research at conferences. His service work in the community is notable, with participation in the “Grow Hays” initiative and his work with Kansas, regional, and national educators. &nbsp;

“To my students, past and present, you are the reason I chose this occupation.” Eric said, “Watching you grow into successful professionals and outstanding human beings is the most rewarding aspect of my career.”

Fort Hays State faculty and staff nominate Torch Award and Lighthouse Award candidates based on classroom excellence, leadership, participation in campus, community, or national organizations, and student, civic, or research activities. Awardees are selected by a committee of FHSU faculty and staff from a pool of nominated students.

The Torch Award recognizes an outstanding senior, which includes May 2025 graduating seniors or students who graduated in December 2024. The Lighthouse Award recognizes an outstanding graduate student who is graduating.

Pilot Award candidates are nominated by graduating seniors based on classroom excellence, ongoing research, and service activities. They are selected by a committee of graduating seniors, faculty, and Alumni Office representatives.

The 2015 Hays Soccer Club boys traveled to Wichita for the 2025 Wichita Spring Invitational May 2-4.

Their first test of the tournament came against a familiar and former Stryker League foe VC Fusion 15B Green from Valley Center. 

The first half started as a back and forth battle between both teams. Bryce Irwin was able to net the first goal for HSC. VC was able to also net a goal to go all square at 1-1. Hays would stat the scoring column two more times in the half, first on an assist from Noah Berges to Daniel Marcano and then later in the half Berges found the net on an assist from Irwin. 

Coming out of the half, ball control and defense were key. An early goal by VC in the 2nd half pulled them within 2-3. Great goal keeping by Ryder Feldt (12 saves in the game), strong play from defenders Miles Mergen, James Summerall, and Reed Sulzman, and enough ball control halted any other scoring as the final score ended 3-2 in HSC’s favor.

Just4Kix Lightning 15B, another former Stryker League opponent, was the early Sunday afternoon draw for HSC. Lincoln Hamel and Daniel Marcano put two goals in quickly to put HSC up early 2-0. &nbsp;Coming in at forward in the first half, Ryder Feldt netted his 2nd goal of the tournament on a long free kick. Later in the half on a nice pass from Alex Penka, Noah Berges sent a laser in to put HSC up 4-0. &nbsp;Right before the intermission, Hamel was able to net his second goal of the half for 5 first half goals for Hays. 

It was a “family reunion” to start the second half as Cameron Feldt was able to find cousin Ryder Feldt on a cross for Ryder’s second goal of the game. &nbsp;A fly by the defender gave Marcano his second goal of the day. &nbsp;Later in the half, C. Feldt found Reed Sulzman for his second assist and Sulzman’s first goal. JFKL 15 was able to put 2 in goal late in the 2nd half to end it 8-2 advancing Hays into the championship game. Bryce Irwin and C. Feldt split the game as goalies with 8 and 2 saves each.

In their first Wichita tournament final, HSC met Pool B winner, Black Lightning Bandidos from Wichita. BLB came out quick and aggressive and HSC found themselves down 0-2 midway through the 1st half. Bryce Irwin was able to send a nice goal in to bring HSC closer at 1-2. Another BLB goal put HSC down at the half 1-3. 

Starting the 2nd half, the HSC found their passing game and were able to net Irwin’s second goal of the game on an assist from Noah Berges. Off a corner kick a huge goal was put in by Finley Zimmerman to knot the match at 3-3. &nbsp;A late 2nd half goal by BLB put them up 4-3. HSC dug deep the final 4-5 minutes of the second half to put the pressure on in the BLB box. With 20-30 seconds left in the second half, HSC was awarded a corner kick and converted with Berges netting the pass from the Cameron Feldt kick with 3 seconds left to play. 

As ties are not allowed in championships, penalty kicks to crown the winner ensued. 

After neither team had an advantage after 5 players due to great goalkeeping by Ryder Feldt (5 saves in the game), a sudden death format would decide the champion. HSC’s first shot was just over the top crossbar and BLB was able to score, ending HSC’s tournament as finalist/runner-up.

Marilyn Hazel Fulton, 90, passed away May
8, 2025 at Menorah Medical Center, Overland Park, KS.

She was
born October 31, 1934 in Larned; the daughter of John and Hazel Deets
Couchman.&nbsp; A lifetime area resident she
was a greenhouse associate at the Larned Greenhouse and also worked at Alco.

She was a
member of the Larned United Methodist Church, Job’s Daughters and Order of the
Eastern Star.&nbsp; Marilyn enjoyed gardening,
yardwork, construction, doing anything with flowers and crafts, cooking and
spending time with her family.

On April
3, 1960 she married Raymond Fulton in Larned, Kansas.&nbsp; He passed away September 1, 2000.

Survivors
include; two daughters, Deana (Rob Kramer) Robben, Hays and Linda Dreiling,
Lawrence; four grandchildren, Haley (Brock) Johnson, Johnstown, Co, Joshua
(Brittany Crump) Dreiling, Baldwin City, Casey Robben, Hays and Nicholas
(Patience Dickerman) Dreiling, Hays; two step grandchildren, Kristonna Kramer,
Phoenix, AZ and Konner Kramer, Ellis; and two great grandchildren, Emmi and
Parker.

She was
preceded in death by; her husband Raymond and a brother Lorraine Couchman.

Graveside
service will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at Larned Cemetery with Reverend
Angela DeFisher presiding.&nbsp; There will be

Government surplus commodities to be distributed Tuesday in Hays

Hays city commissioners want to know what residents think about the use of fireworks within city limits and have provided an <a href="https://form.jotform.com/251184874225157">opinion survey on the city's website</a>. Access to the survey is also on social media and is open through the end of the month.

"Fireworks is always a hot topic," Alaina Cunningham, city commissioner, said Friday on KAYS' The Morning Blend, "and it does seem people are definitely for or against."

However, only a few residents speak out each July 4 holiday, and they are passionate one way or the other.&nbsp;

"We're not sure if the choices are by the entire community," Cunningham said, "so we've created a poll. Give us your opinions, give us your thoughts. That way, we can get a better feeling of what the citizens would like and move forward with the Fourth of July."

The city's fireworks policy allows the sale and use of common fireworks from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 2 to 4, unless suspended due to adverse weather conditions or safety concerns.&nbsp;

Deputy City Manager Collin Bielser said the poll is not in direct response to the state's new law allowing the sale of fireworks year-round.

"At the state level, there was discussion about differences in fireworks laws, so we're kind of evaluating ours since it's been in place for a while," he said.&nbsp;"Are we allowing the number of days people would like, or the types of fireworks, things like that?"

Other business at Thursday's city commission meeting included a public hearing to establish a reinvestment housing incentive district for 25 years and adoption of a housing development plan for Tallgrass 2nd Addition, Phase 4. No comments were made during the public hearing.

The property will be platted for about 101 residential lots, including more workforce housing and the potential of multi-family units.&nbsp;

The agreement with the private Ellis County developer Heartland of America entitles the city to the incentive district revenues.&nbsp;

The city will finance and construct the infrastructure. Heartland of America&nbsp;will provide a deposit&nbsp;equal to 30% of the projected infrastructure costs, estimated at $6 million.&nbsp;

If the development doesn't generate a sufficient property tax increment after six years, the city has the option to take ownership of all the undeveloped lots.

The city is updating its three-year-old housing needs survey. "No surprise. It still says Hays has a housing shortage," Bielser said.&nbsp;

Commissioners also moved forward with a property abatement for the former Rodeway Inn, 3404 Vine St.&nbsp;

The motel is owned by HKHR Hospitality Inc. and was&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e02e23b-0f72-40cb-9cb4-862afda92c4c">shut down by the Kansas Fire Marshal</a>&nbsp;last year for significant structural damage.&nbsp; On Oct. 5, 2024, the fire marshal was notified by the owner that the motel was closed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Owner's representative Elinda Mages told the commission last week a <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/c3f6ae0c-f19d-4942-ba25-abc32c8d50a9">letter of intent is in place from a national chain</a> to buy and develop the property.

"We don't want to stop this," said Commissioner Reese Barrick. "One way or the other, we want to see this property become a useful part of the community."

Also approved was a low bid of $292,650 to QMC, Inc., Quinter, to construct a new stormwater equipment storage building.&nbsp;

GOODLAND—The National Weather Service will no longer staff its Goodland office 24/7.

The change is part of cuts announced nationwide in the National Weather Service.

The Goodland office covers the tri-state area, including northwest Kansas, southwest Nebraska and northeast Colorado.

The National Weather Service office in Dodge City covers Hays.

The Hays Post asked the National Weather Service if any other Kansas regional offices would be affected by cuts. However, that question was not answered.

The National Weather Service public affairs office issued only the statement below:

The National Weather Service is adjusting some services due to temporary staffing changes at our local forecast offices throughout the country in order to best meet the needs of the public, our partners and stakeholders in each office’s local area. These adjustments are also temporary, and we will continue to fulfill our core mission of providing life-saving forecasts, warnings, and decision support services.

Jesse Lundquist, warning coordinator meteorologist in Goodland, said he was limited in what questions he could answer.

However, he said the following services will continue to be offered through the Goodland office:

• Weather warnings • Weather support for local emergency managers • Deployment to help local emergency managers in the field during emergencies. For example, weather service staff could be deployed to work with emergency managers face-to-face during a wildfire.

Effective weed control is essential for Kansas grain sorghum producers to achieve strong yields. 

One of the best management practices for effective weed control is planting grain sorghum into clean, weed-free fields. Grain sorghum planted in a weed-free field, coupled with a strong residual program up front, will start strong and outcompete late-emerging weeds. Also, the chances of chemical weed control failures after crop establishment are higher if grain sorghum is established in an already weed-infested field.

In dryland production systems of western Kansas, conservation tillage is a common practice. 

This practice helps retain more soil water and increases crop residue on the soil surface, which supports crop intensification. Higher residue amounts also benefit soil health by reducing soil erosion from wind and water, improving soil organic carbon accumulation, and enhancing soil structure. Conservation tillage systems rely on herbicides for effective preplant management of existing weeds, making subsequent weed management strategies more effective.

Preplant herbicide options ahead of grain sorghum are limited, and atrazine has been the basis of most chemical weed control programs in Kansas grain sorghum.

 Some of the options available can be found below.

Atrazine can be applied as early preplant, PPI, PRE, and POST. It has some activity on grasses like foxtails, but is considered a broadleaf herbicide. It will control susceptible populations of kochia, pigweeds, morningglories, mustards, and ragweeds.

2,4-D. For preplant burndown applications, low-volatile esters are more effective in controlling weeds and are preferably used over amine formulations. But, sorghum can be injured by carryover from preplant 2,4-D. Therefore, growers should follow label guidelines.

Dicamba provides control of susceptible emerged broadleaves and has a moderate residual control of germinating weeds (pigweeds, wild buckwheat, and lambsquarters). Mixtures of dicamba (8 to 16 oz/a) and atrazine (1 to 2 pints/a) in early spring are good options for kochia control.

Glyphosate provides a broad-spectrum control of glyphosate-susceptible weeds present in the field. Glyphosate resistance is widespread in the state, and the herbicide is often mixed with 2,4-D or dicamba for a broader spectrum and increased control.

Sharpen provides control of many broadleaf weeds like common lambsquarters, marestail, mustards, nightshade, Palmer amaranth, redroot pigweed, wild sunflower, and velvetleaf.

Gramoxone can only be handled and applied by certified applicators and is a nonselective, nonresidual contact herbicide often used for preplant burndown of weeds.

Reviton is a new group 14 (PPO-inhibiting) contact herbicide developed for nonselective broadleaf and grass weed control or suppression when applied to actively growing weeds.

Group 15 herbicides. Residual control of weeds that have not emerged can be achieved by including a Group 15 herbicide with a burndown application. S-metolachlor (Dual Magnum, others) can be applied up to 45 days before planting seed treated with Concep III safener. Similarly, if safened seed is used, acetochlor (Warrant, others) or dimethenamid-P (Outlook, others) can be applied. Products that contain pyroxasulfone (Zidua, others) are not labeled for use in grain sorghum.

CAMPBELL: Get ahead of weeds: Preplant herbicide options for grain sorghum

GODDARD - Kale Schwien placed 5th in Singles at the 5A Regional Tennis Tournament held Friday at Goddard High School. He will complete at the 5A State Tournament in Salina on Friday May 16th.

Schwien received a bye in the first round then lost the next round 6-1, 6-3 to Naman Bhatt of Goddard-Eisenhower.&nbsp;

He defeated Young of Salina Centra 6-1, 6-1 then knocked off Ryddyk Smith of Salina Central 6-3, 6-1 in the fifth-place to qualify for state.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs went 1-1 on the first day of
the Hays Diamond Classic, beating Brusch, Colorado, 3-1 and losing to Life Prep
5-0.

Life Prep 5, TMP 0 The Monarchs were shut out for the first time this season in
their first game of the tournament, falling 5-0 to Life Prep.

Life Prep scored two runs in each the second and third
innings. They added a solo run in the sixth inning as well.

The Fire took advantage of an error to score the game’s
first run and then added a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.

Life Prep led off the third with a walk and a two-run home run
for a 4-0 lead. 

The final run for the Fire came on a sacrifice fly in the sixth
inning in a 5-0 victory.

TMP’s Adler Brown and Grant Nehls each collected one hit for
TMP.

Nehls suffered the loss. He allowed two earned runs, four total,
on five hits in four and a third innings. He also walked five.

TMP 3, Brush 1 TMP’s Caden Dinkel allowed just one unearned run in seven innings, and Grant Nehls homered and drove in two runs as the Monarchs took down Brush,
Colorado, 3-1.

The Monarchs struck first, with one out, they loaded the bases
for Nehls, who drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Brush got the run back on an error in the bottom of the
first.

After back-to-back scoreless innings, the Monarchs took
advantage of a pair of errors, taking a 2-1 lead.

Nehls' solo home run in the fifth put TMP up 3-1 and that
was more than enough for Dinkel as the Monarchs claimed the 3-1 victory.

The Monarchs will open the Saturday portion of the classic
at 9:30 a.m. against Manhattan. They will then close against Hays High at 5:45
p.m.

HAYS - Jalen Smith pitched a complete game shutout as the Hays High Indians knocked off the Brush Beet Diggers 5-0 Friday evening at Leo-Harper Field.

The night cap of the first day of the Diamond Classic got underway with three runs in the bottom of the first inning for Hays (12-7). Johnny Cano and Jalen Smith led off with singles. Each stole a base and Cano scored on a passed ball for the game's first run.

Brett Rhoades walked later in the inning and Trace Jacobs plated Smith and Rhoades with a single for a 3-0 advantage.

Smith allowed a one out double in the first inning. He and the Indian defense retired the next ten batters. A two-out walk in the fourth ended that streak.

The Indians added a run in each the bottom of the fourth and sixth. Cano singled home Ian McGuire in the fourth for a 4-0 advantage. Cano then laid down a bunt single up the first base line for a 5-0 lead when McGuire again scored. Cano recorded three of the Indians eight hits. McGuire had two hits.

Smith (2-2) worked around trouble in the sixth and seventh innings to earn the victory. The Beet Diggers put two on with nobody out in the sixth. Smith threw out the lead runner at third base on a ground ball for the first out of the inning. Kaleb Roe, Cano and Carter Graham combined for a double play to end the inning on the next at-bat.

Smith loaded the bases in the seventh with one out on a hit-batter and a pair of walks. He then recorded his fifth strikeout and caught an infield pop-up to end the game.

Hays improves to 1-1 at the Diamond Classic. They face Life Prep at 3:45 Saturday and then TMP following that game.
