WACO, Texas – Fort Hays State Football received five more votes in the AFCA Top 25 Poll this week than it did in the week prior. The latest poll was released on Monday. The Tigers are coming off a 38-7 win over Washburn at home this past week.

Fort Hays State goes on the road this week to face the highest ranked team in the MIAA, No. 7 Pittsburg State. The Gorillas hold a 4-1 record on the season with their only loss to Emporia State, which currently holds the No. 16 ranking. Remaining undefeated is Central Oklahoma, moving up to No. 11 this week, which gives the MIAA three teams in the Top 25 once again. Fort Hays State is the only MIAA team in the receiving votes section this week.

Saturday will mark Fort Hays State's fourth game this season against an AFCA Top 25 ranked team. The Tigers have a 2-1 record against AFCA Top 25 ranked teams so far this season. The Tigers won home contests over No. 24 Angelo State and No. 12 Central Missouri, but lost on the road at No. 23 Central Oklahoma.

(AP) — A&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i63oZu7Gvkk">NASA spacecraft</a>&nbsp;rocketed away Monday on a quest to explore&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nasa-europa-clipper-jupiter-f2a8f35f807f18eba447b518c289a552">Jupiter’s tantalizing moon Europa</a>&nbsp;and reveal whether its vast hidden ocean might hold the keys to life.

It will take&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jupiter-europa-clipper-nasa-d5b5a724b1802c601400e6d38fef06dd">Europa Clipper</a>&nbsp;5 1/2 years to reach Jupiter, where it will slip into orbit around the giant gas planet and sneak close to Europa during dozens of radiation-drenched flybys.

Scientists are almost certain a deep, global ocean exists beneath&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/astronomy-space-exploration-science-business-jupiter-910a2cfff7501e45e3e167c4b22cc428">Europa’s icy crust</a>. And where there is water, there could be life, making the moon one of the most promising places out there to hunt for it.

Europa Clipper won’t look for life; it has no life detectors. Instead, the spacecraft will zero in on the ingredients necessary to sustain life, searching for organic compounds and other clues as it peers beneath the ice for suitable conditions.

SpaceX started Clipper on its 1.8 million-mile (3 billion-kilometer) journey, launching the spacecraft on a Falcon Heavy rocket from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center. An hour later, the spacecraft separated from the upper stage, floated off and called home.

“Please say goodbye to Clipper on its way to Europa,” NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory's flight director announced from Southern California.

"The science on this is really captivating,” NASA Associate Administrator Jim Free told The Associated Press back at the launch site. Scientists are still learning about the depths of our own ocean, “and here we are looking that far out.”

The $5.2 billion mission almost got derailed by transistors.

NASA didn’t learn until spring that Clipper’s transistors might be more vulnerable to Jupiter’s intense radiation field than anticipated. Clipper will endure the equivalent of several million chest X-rays during each of the 49 Europa flybys. The space agency spent months reviewing everything before concluding in September that the mission could proceed as planned.

Hurricane Milton added to the anxiety, delaying the launch by several days.

“What a great day. We’re so excited,” JPL Director Laurie Leshin said after liftoff.

About the size of a basketball court with its solar wings unfurled, Clipper will swing past Mars and then Earth on its way to Jupiter for gravity assists. The nearly 13,000-pound (5,700-kilogram) probe should reach the solar system’s biggest planet in 2030.

Clipper will circle Jupiter every 21 days. One of those days will bring it close to Europa, among 95 known moons at Jupiter and close to our own moon in size.

The spacecraft will skim as low as 16 miles (25 kilometers) above Europa — much closer than the few previous visitors. Onboard radar will attempt to penetrate the moon’s ice sheet, believed to be 10 miles to 15 miles or more (15 kilometers to 24 kilometers) thick. The ocean below could be 80 miles (120 kilometers) or more deep.

The spacecraft holds nine instruments, with its sensitive electronics stored in a vault with dense zinc and aluminum walls for protection against radiation. Exploration will last until 2034.

“Ocean worlds like Europa are not only unique because they might be habitable, but they might be habitable today,” NASA’s Gina DiBraccio said on the eve of launch.

If conditions are found to be favorable for life at Europa, then that opens up the possibility of life at other ocean worlds in our solar system and beyond, according to scientists. With an underground ocean and geysers, Saturn’s moon Enceladus is another top candidate.

Its massive solar panels make Clipper the biggest craft built by NASA to investigate another planet. It will take 5 1/2 years to reach Jupiter and will sneak within 16 miles (25 kilometers) of Europa's surface — considerably closer than any other spacecraft.

Europa, the superstar among Jupiter’s many moons

One of Jupiter’s 95 known moons, Europa is almost the size of our own moon. It's encased in an ice sheet estimated to be 10 miles to 15 miles or more (15 kilometers to 24 kilometers) thick. Scientists believe this frozen crust hides an ocean that could be 80 miles (120 kilometers) or more deep. The Hubble Space Telescope has spotted what appear to be geysers erupting from the surface. Discovered by Galileo in 1610, Europa is one of the four so-called Galilean moons of Jupiter, along with Ganymede, Io and Callisto.

What type of life might Europa harbor? Besides water, organic compounds are needed for life as we know it, plus an energy source. In Europa’s case that could be thermal vents on the ocean floor. Deputy project scientist Bonnie Buratti imagines any life would be primitive like the bacterial life that originated in Earth’s deep ocean vents. “We will not know from this mission because we can’t see that deep,” she said. Unlike missions to Mars where habitability is one of many questions, Clipper’s sole job is to establish whether the moon could support life in its ocean or possibly in any pockets of water in the ice.

When its solar wings and antennas are unfurled, Clipper is about the size of a basketball court — more than 100 feet (30 meters) end to end — and weighs nearly 13,000 pounds (6,000 kilograms). The supersized solar panels are needed because of Jupiter’s distance from the sun. The main body — about the size of a camper — is packed with nine science instruments, including radar that will penetrate the ice, cameras that will map virtually the entire moon and tools to tease out the contents of Europa’s surface and tenuous atmosphere. The name hearkens to the swift sailing ships of centuries past.

The roundabout trip to Jupiter will span 1.8 billion miles (3 billion kilometers). For extra oomph, the spacecraft will swing past Mars early next year and then Earth in late 2026. It arrives at Jupiter in 2030 and begins science work the next year. While orbiting Jupiter, it will cross paths with Europa 49 times. The mission ends in 2034 with a planned crash into Ganymede — Jupiter’s biggest moon and the solar system's too.

There’s more radiation around Jupiter than anywhere else in our solar system, besides the sun. Europa passes through Jupiter’s bands of radiation as it orbits the gas giant, making it especially menacing for spacecraft. That’s why Clipper’s electronics are inside a vault with dense aluminum and zinc walls. All this radiation would nix any life on Europa’s surface. But it could break down water molecules and, perhaps, release oxygen all the way down into the ocean that could possibly fuel sea life.

Earlier this year, NASA was in a panic that the spacecraft's many transistors might not withstand the intense radiation. But after months of analysis, engineers concluded the mission could proceed as planned.

NASA’s twin Pioneer spacecraft and then two Voyagers swept past Jupiter in the 1970s. The Voyagers provided the first detailed photos of Europa but from quite a distance. NASA’s Galileo spacecraft had repeated flybys of the moon during the 1990s, passing as close as 124 miles (200 kilometers). Still in action around Jupiter, NASA’s Juno spacecraft has added to Europa’s photo album. Arriving at Jupiter a year after Clipper will be the European Space Agency’s Juice spacecraft, launched last year.

Like Europa, Jupiter’s jumbo moon Ganymede is thought to host an underground ocean. But its frozen shell is much thicker — possibly 100 miles (160 kilometers) thick — making it tougher to probe the environment below. Callisto’s ice sheet may be even thicker, possibly hiding an ocean. Saturn’s moon Enceladus has geysers shooting up, but it’s much farther than Jupiter. Ditto for Saturn’s moon Titan, also suspected of having a subterranean sea. While no ocean worlds have been confirmed beyond our solar system, scientists believe they’re out there — and may even be relatively common.

Like many robotic explorers before it, Clipper bears messages from Earth. Attached to the electronics vault is a triangular metal plate. On one side is a design labeled “water words” with representations of the word for water in 104 languages. On the opposite side: a poem about the moon by U.S. poet laureate Ada Limon and a silicon chip containing the names of 2.6 million people who signed up to vicariously ride along.

Unlike missions to Mars where habitability is one of many questions, Clipper’s sole job is to establish whether the moon could support life in its ocean or possibly in any pockets of water in the ice.<h2>Supersized spacecraft</h2>When its solar wings and antennas are unfurled, Clipper is about the size of a basketball court — more than 100 feet (30 meters) end to end — and weighs nearly 13,000 pounds (6,000 kilograms). The supersized solar panels are needed because of Jupiter’s distance from the sun. The main body — about the size of a camper — is packed with nine science instruments, including radar that will penetrate the ice, cameras that will map virtually the entire moon and tools to tease out the contents of Europa’s surface and tenuous atmosphere. The name hearkens to the swift sailing ships of centuries past.<h2>Circling Jupiter to fly by Europa</h2>The roundabout trip to Jupiter will span 1.8 billion miles (3 billion kilometers). For extra oomph, the spacecraft will swing past Mars early next year and then Earth in late 2026. It arrives at Jupiter in 2030 and begins science work the next year. While orbiting Jupiter, it will cross paths with Europa 49 times. The mission ends in 2034 with a planned crash into Ganymede — Jupiter’s biggest moon and the solar system's too.<h2>Europa flybys pose huge radiation risk</h2>There’s more radiation around Jupiter than anywhere else in our solar system, besides the sun. Europa passes through Jupiter’s bands of radiation as it orbits the gas giant, making it especially menacing for spacecraft. That’s why Clipper’s electronics are inside a vault with dense aluminum and zinc walls. All this radiation would nix any life on Europa’s surface. But it could break down water molecules and, perhaps, release oxygen all the way down into the ocean that could possibly fuel sea life.Earlier this year, NASA was in a panic that the spacecraft's many transistors might not withstand the intense radiation. But after months of analysis, engineers concluded the mission could proceed as planned.<h2>Other visitors to Jupiter and Europa</h2>NASA’s twin Pioneer spacecraft and then two Voyagers swept past Jupiter in the 1970s. The Voyagers provided the first detailed photos of Europa but from quite a distance. NASA’s Galileo spacecraft had repeated flybys of the moon during the 1990s, passing as close as 124 miles (200 kilometers). Still in action around Jupiter, NASA’s Juno spacecraft has added to Europa’s photo album. Arriving at Jupiter a year after Clipper will be the European Space Agency’s Juice spacecraft, launched last year.<h2>Ganymede and other possible ocean worlds</h2>Like Europa, Jupiter’s jumbo moon Ganymede is thought to host an underground ocean. But its frozen shell is much thicker — possibly 100 miles (160 kilometers) thick — making it tougher to probe the environment below. Callisto’s ice sheet may be even thicker, possibly hiding an ocean. Saturn’s moon Enceladus has geysers shooting up, but it’s much farther than Jupiter. Ditto for Saturn’s moon Titan, also suspected of having a subterranean sea. While no ocean worlds have been confirmed beyond our solar system, scientists believe they’re out there — and may even be relatively common.<h2>Messages in a cosmic bottle</h2>Like many robotic explorers before it, Clipper bears messages from Earth. Attached to the electronics vault is a triangular metal plate. On one side is a design labeled “water words” with representations of the word for water in 104 languages. WASHINGTON&nbsp; —At the direction of the President, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin authorized the deployment of a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery and associated crew of U.S. military personnel to Israel to help bolster Israel's air defenses following Iran's unprecedented attacks against Israel on April 13 and again on October 1, according to a statement from the U.S. Central Command

The announcement from Washington came after Iran warned the U.S. to keep its military forces out of Israel.

 The THAAD Battery is a defensive system that shoots down incoming ballistic missiles and will augment Israel's integrated air defense system. 

This action underscores the United States' ironclad commitment to the defense of Israel, and to defend Americans in Israel, from any further ballistic missile attacks by Iran. It is part of the broader adjustments the U.S. military has made in recent months, to support the defense of Israel and protect Americans from attacks by Iran and Iranian-aligned militias.&nbsp;

This is not the first time the United States has deployed a THAAD battery to the region, according to the U.S. Central Command. The President directed the military to deploy a THAAD battery to the Middle East last year following the October 7th attacks to defend American troops and interests in the region. The United States previously deployed a THAAD battery to Israel in 2019 for training and an integrated air defense exercise.

Despite Iranian threat, US sending troops, missile defense system to Israel  

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Women's Soccer improved to 6-3-3 overall and 3-2-1 in the MIAA with a 2-1 win over Newman University on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 13). The Tigers scored the first two goals of the match before Newman scored late to cut the margin in half. The Jets fell to 0-11-1 overall and 0-6 in the MIAA with the loss.

The Tigers picked up their first goal in the 30th minute on a crossing pass from Sullivan Kelly that found the head of Sydney Cotter inside the box. It was Cotter's third goal of the season, tying for the team lead. FHSU held a slight 9-8 shot advantage over NU in the opening half even while going into a steady breeze. FHSU keeper Tatum Hoge and Newman keeper Carla Apodaca each made five saves in the opening half.

Fort Hays State extended its lead in the 79th minute when Gracen Chaney perfectly bent a corner kick up over a leaping keeper and into the net. It was her second goal off a corner kick this season, and proved to be the game winner.

Newman kept formulating chances late in the game and cashed in on a long pass from Kinsey Logan to Delphine Sosu, who won a 1-on-1 situation with Hoge in the 85th minute. But the Tiger defense held off every other late charge from the Jets for the win.

FHSU finished with a 20-15 advantage in shot count. Hoge finished with eight saves for FHSU, while Apodaca had seven for Newman.

He was born
September 17, 1941 in Hays, the son of Fred and Mary (Klaus) Bieker.&nbsp; Dennis graduated from St. Mary’s of the
Plains High School in Dodge City and he graduated cum laude from St. Benedicts
in Atchison in 1963.&nbsp; He graduated with
his Juris Doctorate from Washburn Law School in 1966 and started practicing law
with Norbert Dreiling that same year.&nbsp; He
was a partner at Dreiling, Bieker, and Hoffman Law Office and has continued
practicing law for 58 years.&nbsp; His
professional memberships included the Kansas Ethics and Grievance Committee (20
years), Kansas Bar Association, American Bar Association, and the American
Trial Lawyers Association.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

On December
26, 1966, he was united in marriage to Marsha Ayres in Kansas City, Missouri.&nbsp; He loved his family, practicing law, and
traveling.&nbsp; Dennis and Marsha enjoyed
family trips to all 50 states, vacationed annually and semi-annually in
Nantucket for 35 years, and he also traveled to Europe and South America with
his uncle, A.F. Bieker.&nbsp; He was an avid
reader of the Wall Street Journal, a KU basketball fan, enjoying many games at
Allen Fieldhouse, watched pro football, and listened to the Kingston Trio.&nbsp; Dennis was actively involved throughout the
community of Hays as a member of the Golden Belt Board of Directors
(1972-present), Airport Committee, Chairman of TMP Endowment (20 years), St.
Anthony Hospital Foundation Trustee, and Hays Medical Center Board of Directors
(1991-2017).&nbsp; 

Survivors
include his wife Marsha of Hays, his son, Chris Bieker and wife Leah of Denver,
CO, daughter, Lorrie Windholz and husband Greg of Lawrence, brother, Larry
Bieker and wife Barbara of Hays, sister, Nila Bieker of WaKeeney, four
grandchildren, Natalie Windholz, Lacey Windholz, Ivy Bieker, and Easton Bieker,

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kamala-harris">Kamala Harris</a>&nbsp;is in “excellent health” and “possesses the physical and mental resiliency” required to serve as president,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/VP-Harris-Health-Summary.pdf">her doctor said in a letter</a>&nbsp;released Saturday that summarizes her medical history and status.

Dr. Joshua Simmons, an Army colonel and physician to the vice president, wrote that Harris, 59, maintains a healthy, active lifestyle and that her most recent physical last April was “unremarkable.”

She “possesses the physical and mental resiliency required to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency, to include those as Chief Executive, Head of State and Commander in Chief,” he wrote in a two-page letter.

Harris' campaign hopes the release of her medical report will draw a contrast with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Republican Donald Trump</a>, who has shared only limited information about his health over the years, and raise questions about his fitness to serve, according to a campaign aide who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters.

Trump has released very little health information, including&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-shooting-transparency-db2f4437237ad03d3b04b0b5f1573977">after his ear was grazed</a>&nbsp;by a bullet during an assassination attempt in July in Pennsylvania.

Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign, said Saturday that Trump has voluntarily released updates from his personal physician as well as detailed reports from Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, who, before he was elected to Congress, was Trump's physician at the White House. Jackson also treated Trump after the assassination attempt.

“All have concluded he is in perfect and excellent health to be Commander in Chief,” Cheung said in a statement. The campaign press office provided links to some of Trump's past medical reports. They included:&nbsp;

If Trump, who is 78, were to be elected next month, he would be the oldest president in U.S. history by the time his term ends in 2029.

Harris addressed the issue on Saturday before she traveled to North Carolina.

“It's clear to me that he and his team do not want the American people to really see what he is doing and if he is fit to be the president,” she told the reporters accompanying her.

Asked if she thought Trump's mental acuity had declined, Harris said, “I invite the public to watch his rallies and be the decision-maker.”

Simmons, who said he has been Harris’ primary care physician for the past 3 1/2 years, said the vice president has a history of seasonal allergies and urticaria, or hives. She has been able to “dramatically” improve her symptoms over the past three years with an immunotherapy medication that helps the body become less sensitive to allergens.

Simmons said Harris’ latest blood work and other test results were “unremarkable.” Her blood pressure is not worryingly high and she is at low risk for heart disease.

According to the summary of an exam conducted six months ago, Harris' vital signs showed a blood pressure of 128 over 74, a heart rate of 78 beats per minute, pulse oximetry of 100% on room air with a respiratory rate of 16 breaths per minute and a temperature of 98.7 degrees. Pulse oximetry measures the amount of oxygen in a person's blood.

Simmons reported that Harris' head, eyes, ears, nose and pharynx are normal.

Also in the report: Harris wears contact lenses for mild nearsightedness; her family history includes maternal colon cancer; she is up to date on preventive care recommendations, including having a colonoscopy and annual mammograms, as well as routine immunizations.

Harris' mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was 70 when she died of colon cancer in February 2009.

The vice president “maintains a healthy, active lifestyle, despite her busy schedule,” including “vigorous daily aerobic exercise and core strength training," Simmons reported. She eats a healthy diet, does not use tobacco products and drinks alcohol “only occasionally and in moderation,” he wrote.

As Harris' office released the medical report, her campaign highlighted recent media reports raising questions about Trump's health and mental acuity and his reluctance to provide detailed information about the state of his health and medical history.

Trump eagerly questioned&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/joe-biden">President Joe Biden's</a>&nbsp;physical and mental fitness when the 81-year-old sought reelection. Since Biden dropped out of the race and was replaced by Harris on the Democratic ticket, Trump's health has drawn more attention.

Last November, Trump marked Biden's birthday&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-health-doctor-physical-biden-81-77-d13bcc9c393080169d4b8e3699a67c67">by releasing a letter</a>&nbsp;from his physician that reported the former president was in “excellent” physical and mental health. Get ready for a spooktacular night: Crawl to End Alz 2024

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State held Washburn to just 59 yards and no points in the second half and defeated the Ichabods 38-7 Saturday night at Lewis Field. The Tigers outscored Washburn 28-0 in the second half as they moved to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the MIAA. The Ichabods dropped to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the MIAA.

After Washburn scored on their first possession, the Tigers held them to just 125 yards the rest of the game while scoring 38 unanswered points.

The Tigers answered Washburn's touchdown with one of their own the very next possession. Caleb Heavner connected with Jayden Horace on a 4-yard touchdown pass in the back right corner of the endzone. The game remained tied until the final play of the second quarter when Carson Arndt connected on a career-long 52-yard field goal. It matched the fifth-longest field goal in program history.

The Tigers scored touchdowns on four of their five second half possessions. Heavner hit tight end Cale Cormaney on an 8-yard shovel pass with 6:21 to play in the third quarter. Just over a minute later, the Tigers delivered a big blow when Heavner hit Horace on a&nbsp;73-yard bomb. to push the lead to 24-7.

In the fourth quarter, Shane Watts scored on a&nbsp;1-yard touchdown run and Joshua Clark added a&nbsp;4-yard touchdown run. 

Fort Hays State finished with 464 yards of total offense, while holding Washburn to just 208. It was the second time the Tigers held an opponent under 250 yards this season.

Heavner completed 26-of-32 passes for a season-high 319 yards with three touchdowns. Horace had 10 catches for 160 yards and the two scores. Watts rushed for 72 yards and the score. Benyon Williams&nbsp;led the Tiger tackling effort with seven, Jaden Barker added a&nbsp;pair of sacks, while Demitri Scott added 1 1/2 sacks.

Sam Van Dyne led the Ichabods with 122 passing yards, while Tyler Bowden had 53 rushing yards. Cole Keller led WU in receiving with 36 yards. Planville native Jordan Finnesy led the Ichabods with nine tackles. and blocked a field goal.

Fort Hays State heads on the road to play nationally ranked Pittsburg State next Saturday in Pittsburg. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Carnie Smith Stadium.

Fort Hays State is coming off a 31-21 win over then No. 12 ranked Central Missouri last week in Hays. The result knocked the Mules out of the Top 25 of both the AFCA and D2Football.com Polls. It was Fort Hays State's third-straight win over an AFCA Top 25 ranked team in Hays, going back to last season.

Washburn fell in a home contest to Northwest Missouri State last week by a score of 51-34. Washburn's lone win this season was over Missouri Western on the road two weeks ago by a score of 24-16. The Ichabods' 1-4 record can be a bit deceiving though since all four of their losses have been to teams that have seen time in the AFCA Top 25 this season. Two of the four losses have been one-score games. This will be the fifth contest for the Ichabods against a team that has seen time in the AFCA Top 25 this season after FHSU was inside the Top 25 earlier this season.

Fort Hays State won last year's meeting between the schools in Topeka by a score of 31-28. The Tigers held a 31-14 lead going to the fourth quarter before the Ichabods tightened the margin with a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Washburn won the last meeting between the schools in Hays back in 2022, but the Tigers had won three-straight games over the Ichabods at home prior to that.

Fort Hays State has played well at home so far this season going 4-0, while limiting opponents to an average of just 11 points per game. The Tigers held the opposition to seven or less points in two of the four wins at home this season. The winning team in this series has scored at least 30 points in 11 of the last 13 meetings. Fort Hays State has scored at least 20 points in all six of its games so far this season with 37 as the season high.

Caleb Heavner&nbsp;has led the Tiger offense at quarterback over the last seven quarters of play. He entered the game at Central Oklahoma late in the first quarter and has been thriving in his role ever since. He threw for 275 yards and rushed for 55 yards in the contest at UCO, then backed that with 302 passing yards and 97 rushing yards in the win over Central Missouri last week.

Also giving the Tigers strong offensive production is Shane Watts, averaging 129 all-purpose yards per game. He has produced at least 100 all-purpose yards in five of six games this season. He is tied for the MIAA lead in scoring with nine touchdowns (54 points), which includes seven rushing touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, Makel Williams&nbsp;was named the MIAA Defensive Athlete of the Week for a career-high 14 tackles in the win over Central Missouri last week. He continues to lead the MIAA in tackles this season, now with 53. He averages 8.8 per game. The Williams combo on defense (no immediate relation), which includes Benyon Williams,&nbsp;both have exactly 214 tackles in their careers. Makel has all of his tackles at FHSU, while Benyon played his first three years at North Carolina Wesleyan.

Both John Johnson (189) and Mason Perez&nbsp;(183) are nearing 200 tackles in their careers as well. Myles Menges&nbsp;leads the Tigers with 4.0 sacks for the season, while Sam Brandt&nbsp;leads in interceptions with two.&nbsp;&nbsp;

OSAGE COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas felon on new drug allegations.

Just after 3:30p.m. October 7, a Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on U.S. 75 Highway in rural Osage County for a traffic violation, according to Sheriff Chris Wells.

 During the stop, illegal narcotics were located.

Deputies took 41-year-old Travis W. Ray of Louisburg into custody and transported him to the Osage County Jail Facility on requested charges of of Possession of methamphetamine, Possession of drug paraphernalia and for an Expired vehicle registration. He has a previous drug conviction, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team fell in three sets Friday evening against Washburn, 22-25, 21-25, 15-25. The Tigers are now 9-6 on the year and 1-5 in MIAA play, while the Ichabods improve to 13-3 overall and 4-2 in league action.

The Tigers struggled out of the gate, quickly falling behind by seven, 9-2. Three kills from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/grace-schmedding/8180">Grace Schmedding</a>&nbsp;helped FHSU score five of the next six points to close within three, 10-7, before the Ichabods rattled off four in a row to go back up seven. Washburn later scored three in a row to stretch its lead back to four before the Tigers scored four in a row to tie things up at 20.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/hope-duncan/8176">Hope Duncan</a>&nbsp;leveled the score with a service ace, prompting a Washburn timeout. The teams traded points over the next several rallies before Washburn scored three in a row to turn a 22-22 tie into a 25-22 win.

The visitors started to pull away early in the second set, eventually leading by as many as 10, 22-12. Fort Hays State wouldn't go down without a fight, however, scoring the next five points and eight of the next nine to close within three, 23-20. Olson fueled the run with three kills and one assisted block alongside Lovesee. Washburn managed to thwart the Tiger momentum, taking the frame 25-21 before pulling away to take the third set, 25-15.

The Tigers collected seven blocks in the match, including six from Lovesee (two solo). Rains and Schmedding both contributed eight kills, with Schmedding adding eight digs and one block. 🏐 Tigers swept at home by Washburn

Michael James Bird 1942-2024, a Hays, Kansas native and
long-time Grants Pass, Oregon lawyer, businessman, community leader, and
friend-to-many Michael J. Bird died peacefully at his home surrounded by family
on September 22, 2024.

Michael is survived by his
wife of 46 years, Katherine Bird; sons Sterling R. Bird and Ryal T. Bird;
stepsons Robert D. Christman and Ashlee R. Christman; siblings Martha Bird
Roberts; John T. Bird (Jo Ann Jennings), David (Lori); and Susan Bird; brother-in-law
Edmond Rodriguez (Giti), sisters-in-law Inez Doerter and Terry McDonald (Ed);
grandchildren Sterling Bird, Spencer Bird (Anabel), Sabrina Paton (Blake), Blue
Christman, Ali Christman, McKenna Christman, Abbie Christman, and Astrid
Ranneberg, in addition to several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by former wife Janet Lorimor Bird, parents Mike and Agnes Bird; and his beloved
grandparents.

Michael had an enterprising
spirit since his youth—business owner, lawyer, Oregon rock and silica
entrepreneur, business strategy and planning, among other interests—but his
love has been his volunteer community activities and good citizenship. In
recent years his special interests have included the arts field and working in
the local arts with his wife. He was an active member of several community
organizations and special causes. He was a devoted member of his church, St.
Anne Catholic Church in Grants Pass. He was also an initial and continuing
supporter of St. Rita's Retreat Center in Rogue River. He was a long-time
photographer, sharing his work far and wide.

Michael was born in 1942 at
St. Anthony Hospital in Hays, Kansas—where in 1917 his father was born. He
graduated from Hays High School in 1960. He earned a degree In Business
Administration/Minor in Economics at Fort Hays Kansas State University in 1968 and
completed his law degree at the University of Oregon in 1971.

While Michael lived away from
Hays and the Bird Family Farm for most of his adult life, he retained his
birthplace as an essential, continuing part of his life, legacy, and spirit.

Funeral services will be at
St. Anne Catholic Church on Monday, October 14. Rosary recitation will be at 10
a.m., followed by a funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. Presiding will be Fr. Michael
Walker. A reception will follow at 12 noon at Si Casa Flores restaurant, 202 NE
Beacon Drive, Grants Pass.

His family will have a
memorial service at the Bird Family Farm in the Spring of 2025, date to be
announced later.
