5 other women identified as possible victims

On Monday, in an Ellis County courtroom in Hays, Wakefield resident Alec Donald Vann was sentenced to 114 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to one count of aggravated sexual battery.

Vann was initially charged with two counts of rape, both being level 1 person felonies, and one count of aggravated sexual battery, a severity level 5-person felony.

The charges alleged Vann knowingly engaged in sexual acts and intercourse with a woman, who did not consent and was overcome by force or fear, in Hays in October 2023.

Vann accepted a plea agreement from the state and pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated sexual battery. After serving his 114-month prison sentence, Vann will be required to register as a sex offender for 25 years and be subject to lifetime post-release supervision.

In addition to the victim in Hays, five additional people were identified as possible victims of Vann. Four victims were willing to speak with the prosecutor, and ultimately, three testified concerning the defendant’s prior acts of sexual misconduct.

The defendant was represented by Andy Vinduska, attorney from Manhattan. The state was represented by former Ellis County Attorney and now Special Prosecutor Appointed, Robert A. Anderson Jr. The Honorable Thomas Drees, 23rd Judicial District Court Judge, served as the sentencing judge.

"This defendant was finally held responsible for his actions, and the Ellis County Attorney's Office will continue to seek justice for victims and hold perpetrators accountable," Anderson said. "We are thankful to the courageous women who came forward in this matter and hope they can now move forward in peace and heal from the trauma caused by the defendant."

The Grinnell school library was damaged in the tornado that struck that community on May 18.

Books have been donated to help the community restore its collection. The Hays United Methodist Church has been accepting books.

The Grinnell school libraries have received an overwhelming number of donated books, according to the Hays Public Library.

After consulting with the Grinnell librarian, the Hays Public Library, with assistance from the Friends of the Hays Public Library, has chosen to take the donated books and have a benefit book sale, with all proceeds going to the Grinnell school libraries. 

The library will continue to accept donated books until 2 p.m. Friday.

The sale will be 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Hays City Commission is set to vote on a price and design agreement for the new Hays Police/Municipal Courts facility on Thursday.

The facility will be in the former Astra Bank, 1100 Fort.

PWC, Hays, has presented a guaranteed maximum price&nbsp;of $5.9 million to renovate the existing Astra Bank, providing the police station more than twice the operational space it has.&nbsp;

Astra Bank is constructing a new facility at 27th and Main, which is expected to be open by Sept. 1.

Commissioners will also consider adopting increases in cemetery fees, which have not been updated for 20 years.&nbsp;

If approved by commissioners, the city is slated to pay a 30% increase in the premium for its 2025-2026 property/liability insurance policy renewal from MPR.

In December 2023, the city commission voted to award industrial revenue bonds for Grow Hays’s&nbsp;MicroFactory project.&nbsp;Due to the loan arrangement between Grow Hays and the Northwest Kansas&nbsp;Economic Innovation Center that contributed to the construction of the MicroFactory, Grow Hays is requesting a subordination agreement on Thursday that subordinates the city’s position to that of the center.

Hays City Commission to vote on Phase 2 cost for new police station/municipal court

Four people were arrested following a man's false report of his girlfriend being kidnapped in Hays.

Hays Deputy Police Chief Tim Greenwood said officers responded to a reported kidnapping in progress about 2:40 a.m. June 5 in the parking lot of the Econo Lodge at 3503 Vine St.

42-year-old Douglas Lee Carson told police his girlfriend was allegedly with another man, 39-year-old Ryan Douglas Howser of Wichita, and was unable to leave, Greenwood said.

After the woman called Carson claiming she had been kidnapped, Carson, along with 47-year-old Joseph Oneil Torres and 32-year-old Cassandra Leigh Kinish of Manhattan, drove to Hays. Carson confronted Howser. Carson allegedly pointed an AR-15 at Howser, Greenwood said.

Greenwood said officers arrived soon after, spotted a gold Chevy Trailblazer, and identified the suspect, Howser, who allegedly fled on foot toward the Econo Lodge.

Greenwood said Howser ran into the hotel to evade officers and tried to escape down a laundry chute before being arrested.

As officers pursued Howser, they spoke with Carson and uncovered multiple alleged crimes, leading to further arrests.

Carson was arrested on requested charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Torress was arrested on requested charges of possession of opiates, drug paraphernalia and criminal use of weapons.

Kinish was arrested on requested charges of possession of opiates and drug paraphernalia.

Howser was arrested on requested charges of felony interference and was found to have an active felony warrant elsewhere.

All were booked into the Ellis County Jail. Greenwood said all parties are innocent until proven guilty.&nbsp;

Four arrested in Hays after false kidnapping report, AR-15 drawn

Carmella L. Thyfault, 92, Hays, died Sunday, June 8, 2025 at
Harry Hynes Hospice Center in Wichita.

She was born on December 19, 1932 in Hoxie, Kansas the
daughter of Fremond and Lucilla (DesMarteau) Comeau. &nbsp;Carmella attended school in Damar and Fort
Hays State University and worked in USD 269 as a special education
teacher.&nbsp; On June 12, 1950, she was
united in marriage to Mose E. Thyfault and he preceded her in death on
September 5, 1996. They had seven children.&nbsp;
Her Catholic faith was the most important thing in her life and she was
actively involved at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Damar as a member of the St.
Ann Sodality and a parish organist for 55 years, beginning as a fifth grader.&nbsp; In Hays, she was a member of St. Nicholas of
Myra Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, Jesus through Mary Prayer Group,
St. Nicholas of Myra Ladies Guild, the Legion of Mary, Associates of the
Sisters of St. Agnes, a Perpetual Adoration adorer, and served on the Mary
Elizabeth Home Auxiliary. &nbsp;She was a
member of FHSU Tiger Club and loved watching sports of all kinds, including her
brother’s, children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, Fort Hays football,
basketball, and volleyball games, and televised KU basketball, K-State football,
Royals baseball, and Chiefs football. 

She is survived by her seven children, Jacqlyn Smith (Pat) of
Greenville, South Carolina, Sharon Witzell (Ken) of Wichita, Kansas, Paula
Thyfault-Laubacker (Mark) of St. Augustine, Florida, Roger Thyfault of Fountain
Hills, Arizona, Sonja Borel (Steve) of Jarreau, Louisiana, Galen Thyfault
(Debbie Blevins) of Junction City, Kansas, and Jody Thyfault of Apache Junction,
Arizona, 23 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, three brothers, Paul Comeau
(Lynn), Bernard Comeau (Peggy), and Jerry Comeau (Mary), and a sister-in-law,
Margie Comeau.&nbsp; 

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Mose,
and a brother, Robert Comeau.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday,
June 17, 2025 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Damar with Fr. Brian Lager
officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the
church cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be from

Carmella L. Thyfault

The Kansas Highway Patrol arrested a California man on Monday after a chase through Russell and Ellis counties.

At 5:29 p.m., a trooper tried to stop a vehicle driven by&nbsp;Shelby L. Miller, 54, of&nbsp;El Sobrante, California, because the tag indicated the vehicle had allegedly fled from law enforcement in Seward County, Nebraska, earlier on Monday, said Trooper Tod Hileman.

The trooper initiated the stop at about milepost 183 of Interstate 70 between Russell and Gorham.

At about 5:35 p.m., the trooper lost sight of the vehicle on southbound U.S. Highway 281.

Multiple units, including the KHP aircraft out of Hays, were deployed to search for the suspect, Hileman said.

At 6:22 p.m., a trooper located the suspect vehicle going southbound on Fairgrounds Road in Ellis County.

At 6:31 p.m., the KHP aircraft located the vehicle now going eastbound on I-70 at about milepost 182.

The vehicle crashed at about 6:33 p.m. in the 600 block of Front Street in Russell, and the suspect was taken into custody.

The suspect is facing requested charges of felony fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, resisting arrest, and leaving the scene of an accident, Hileman said.

The suspect is also wanted for charges in Nebraska, Hileman said.

HAYS – The Hays Larks left the bases loaded in a tie ball
game, in the bottom of the ninth inning and finished in a 5-5 tie with the
Kansas Cannons in a non-league contest Tuesday night at Larks Park. 

The Larks out-hit the Cannons 12-9, and all but one Lark in
the lineup had at least one hit. But they loaded the bases in the bottom of the
ninth inning with no outs, but they failed to produce, resulting in the tie
game.

Brady Kreutzer homered and collected a pair of hits in his
Larks debut. Jackson Babcock walked and drove in a pair of runs. 

Larks’ starter Keevyn Goss allowed just one run, on two
hits, with seven strikeouts in four innings. But got the no decision.

⚾Larks and Cannons ends in tie

The Ellis County Commission approved a 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment for all Ellis County employees, elected officials and contract positions on Tuesday.

The cost-of-living adjustment is intended to keep wages competitive, support employee retention, prevent wage compression and&nbsp;reduce turnover costs.

The county commission planned for this item last year, but Commissioner Michael Berges said he has concerns about the broader economic outlook.

"Everywhere we can save money right now, it feels like we need to. It's tough because I can see all the reasons to do it, but I also struggle with that outlook and making sure we're as secure as we need to be," Berges said.

Commissioner Nathan Leiker said the county's savings are due to its employees, and retaining staff is more cost-effective than replacing them.

Commissioner Neal Younger said, "We don't want to be a training center."

The resolution was approved by a 2-1 vote to take effect June 22.

Braden Parke, chair of the Wage and Benefits Committee, also attended the meeting to present a proposal for the 401a retirement plan that would introduce a new $60 match tier.

The current 401 (a) matching contribution includes tiers of $15, $30 and $45. Darin Myers, county administrator, said 109 employees are in the $45 tier, and if all were to move to the proposed $60 tier, it would cost about $37,500 in the 2026 budget.

The commission said they would like additional time to review the proposal before making a decision.

Justin Craig, environmental services director, received approval for a resolution establishing a secured loads policy at the Ellis County Landfill to address increasing concerns about roadway debris.

The policy is designed to reduce litter, improve public safety and address residents' complaints by enforcing load security standards.

The policy will be fully enforced starting April 1. Violators could be subject to a 50% surcharge on landfill fees and possible law enforcement involvement.

The Ellis County Commission approved the distribution of alcohol tax funds as recommended by the CARE Council.

One-third of the collected alcohol tax revenue, designated for alcohol and drug programs, will be split evenly between Dream Inc. and the Smoky Hill Foundation for Chemical Dependency. Both will receive $3,865.

Highway 40 and Main Street intersection in Victoria

&nbsp;The commission voted not to approve financial assistance for the reconstruction of the East Main Street approach to Old Highway 40 in Victoria.

The city of Victoria requested the county fund one-third of the total $124,685 cost, as the approach is deteriorating, resulting in large potholes.

Younger said the project was not budgeted as it was brought forward outside the commission’s budgeting process.

"Maybe this is something that we should look into for the future, to start putting funding away to help assist in other communities or villages around," he said.

The commission rejected the request with a 2-1 vote, with Leiker voting in favor of the funding.

The commission reappointed David McDaniel and Mason Ruder to new three-year terms on the Joint Planning Commission beginning July 1. Their current terms end on June 30.

Mackay received approval to purchase 27,456 gallons of asphalt emulsion oil for the Catharine Road reconstruction project, which is expected to cost about $74,400.

It's tough because I can see all the reasons to do it, but I also struggle with that outlook and making sure we're as secure as we need to be," Berges said.Commissioner Nathan Leiker said the county's savings are due to its employees, and retaining staff is more cost-effective than replacing them.Commissioner Neal Younger said, "We don't want to be a training center."The resolution was approved by a 2-1 vote to take effect June 22.Braden Parke, chair of the Wage and Benefits Committee, also attended the meeting to present a proposal for the 401a retirement plan that would introduce a new $60 match tier.The current 401 (a) matching contribution includes tiers of $15, $30 and $45. Ellis County Commission approves cost of living adjustment

Automobile enthusiasts will once again take over downtown
Hays and Municipal Park this weekend for the annual Thunder on the Plains Car,
Truck and Cycle Show.

Last year, the annual event that brings together cars,
trucks, motorcycles, and tractors from across the region celebrated its return
to downtown with more than 230 attendees, and this year, they will celebrate
their 10th year on Friday and Saturday. 

The event will, once again, begin with the cruise-in
starting at Big Creek Crossing at 6 p.m. on Friday. The
cars will travel to 27th Street, then proceed down to Main Street
and the park. 

Jackie Lang, a member of Thunder on the Plains, said they
would like people to line Main Street to get a good look at the
cars that will be on display on Saturday.

"If people want to see that parade of cars, they're sure
welcome to come down and see it," Lang said. "That's a good way to see a lot of
the cars that are going to be in the show, just to come down."

Once at the park downtown, there will be a barbecue. And if
you want to register a vehicle but missed the preregistration deadline, you can
register on Friday night.

Saturday’s event opens with registration from 7:30 to
10 a.m. at Municipal Park.

The live auction will take place at 12:30 p.m., followed by
the awards ceremony at 2 p.m.

There are more than 50 awards up for grabs and $1,000 in cash
prizes. 

The awards include Best of Show in four categories: car,
truck, cycle and tractors.

They also have awards for Kids' Choice, Mayor's Choice, Best
Paint, Best Interior and Best Engine.

There will also be an award for
project cars. They hope this will convince people to bring their vehicles, of
all shapes and sizes, to the show.

"Why have this beautiful automobile hidden in your garage if
you're never going to let anybody see it?" Lang said. "It's really something we
encourage is for people to get them out, bring them out, show them off."

There will also be plenty of things for families and kids to
enjoy.

The Hays High cheerleaders will be doing face painting and a
bounce house. 

The beer garden returns, accompanied by several other food
vendors. That includes barbecue, snow cones, bubble tea and a cigar vendor. 

While the weekend is about the fun of the show and enjoying
the vehicles, for the Thunder on the Plains group, the fundraising and the
lives they affect through the show remain the highlight.

In the nine years leading up to the 2025 show, the group has donated more than $140,000 to local nonprofit organizations.

Last year, the group elected to focus on a larger organization and raised almost $17,000 for the Make-A-Wish
Foundation of Missouri and Kansas.

Once again this year, 100% of the proceeds from the show’s
auction will benefit a wish recipient in Ellis County and the Make-A-Wish
Foundation. The live auction begins at 12:30 p.m.

Lang said last year, three local children who were
waiting for their wishes received them. All three went to Disney World.

There is one Ellis County child who is waiting for a wish
this year, and they are planning to attend the show.

This year, Thunder on the Plains also will continue to provide
scholarships to Ellis County seniors pursuing education in the automotive
industry.

This year, Nikole Orinder and Lillian Wellbrock each received
$1,000.

It was the first time both recipients were female.

Each year, sponsors donate items for the live auction. You
don’t have to have a car registered at the show to bid at the auction.

One of the major auction items this year is a bar crafted by
Rod Roy, a group member. Members also donated their favorite wines and spirits
to help the winner get started stocking their bar.

The late Craig Fischer, a big supporter of the event,
donated most of the materials.

The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs softball team had three players
named to the 2-1A State Softball Coaches team, released Tuesday.

Monarchs senior Brooke Koenigsman was a first-team selection
on the infield, and junior Addison Watson was a first-team pick in the
outfield.

Sophomore Brynn Rebel was a second-team selection at
pitcher.

Koenigsman, who finished her career at TMP with a .558 batting
average, hit safely in 95 of 105 career games. She broke or set 11 career and single-season
records at TMP.

In her senior season, Koenigsman finished with a .624 batting
average, 30 extra base hits, 15 doubles, eight triples and seven home runs. She
drove in 64 runs for the second time in her career, scoring 61 runs. All while
striking out just twice.

She finishes her career as a three-time first-team all-state
selection. 

Addison Watson finished her junior season with a .471 batting
average. She finished with eight extra base hits, 29 RBI’s, and 28 runs scored.

This is the first all-state selection for Watson.

Rebel finished 14-1 with a 1.96 ERA in the circle. She allowed
38 runs, 19 earned, in 68 innings pitched. She struck out 82 and walked 34.

Rebel was a second-team selection as a freshman.

Duane
Eber Dunning, 90, of Plainville, Kansas, passed away peacefully on June 9,
2025, at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville.

Duane
was born on February 18, 1935, in Webster, Kansas, to Ray and Lula (Folsom)
Dunning. He graduated from Webster High School with the Class of 1953. On
November 6, 1954, he married the love of his life, Marilyn Jean Hunter, in
Stockton, Kansas. Together they raised two children, Steve and Vicki, and built
a life centered around faith, family, and community.

Duane
began his working life in the oil fields before becoming the maintenance
supervisor for USD 270, a position he held for ten years. He especially loved
working around the students and was known for his kind and helpful nature.
After his time with the school district, he continued helping others through
his work with Reed’s Plumbing before eventually dedicating his time to caring
for his beloved wife.

A
devoted Christian, Duane was a longtime member of the Plainville United
Methodist Church and also a Scout Master for the Boy Scouts that achieved Order
of the Arrow. He believed deeply in service to others and spent his life
forming close-knit “families” within the communities where he lived and worked.

As a
son, brother, husband, father, and friend, Duane was a natural protector and
source of strength. He embraced his role as the eldest sibling and continued to
be a steady presence for his family throughout his life. With Marilyn, he built
a joyful home where children and neighbors alike were always welcome. His
playful spirit could be seen in spontaneous water fights, wrestling matches,
and backyard foot races.

Duane
had many passions—he loved to square dance, travel, hunt, fish, and ride
motorcycles. Even into his 80s, he could be found taking long rides with his
son and brothers. He was a talented woodworker, known especially for crafting
grandfather clocks that became treasured family heirlooms. Among his proudest
accomplishments was teaching all his grandchildren how to water ski and fish,
creating cherished memories that will live on for generations. Duane will be
remembered for his unwavering devotion to family, his joyful spirit, and the
countless lives he touched with his generosity and love.

Duane
is survived by his son, Steve (Cheryl) Dunning of Leawood, KS; daughter, Vicki
(Gene) Gile of Hays, KS; brothers, Alan (Lila) Dunning of Chanute, KS, and Merl
(Nita) Dunning of Stockton, KS; sister, Nola (Jerry) Bump of Hays, KS;
sisters-in-law, Karen Dunning of Glade, KS, and Nancy Dunning of McFarland, KS;
five grandchildren, Jessica (Zach) Plante, Jay (Kelly) Hrabe, Caroline (David)
Clemmensen, Annie (Bobby) Pitts, and Hunter (Alana) Dunning; twelve
great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was
preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marilyn; brothers David Dunning,
Loren (Elaine) Dunning, and Lyle Dunning; and a grandchild, Devon Mick.

A
Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at the
United Methodist Church in Plainville. Burial will be held at a later date at
the Plainville City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5:00 to
7:00 PM at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Plainville.

&nbsp;Verland
Eugene Leiker, age 84, of Hays, Kansas passed away Friday, June 6, 2025 at
HaysMed. He was born April 16, 1941 in Munjor, Kansas to Alfred J. and Regina
M. (Herl) Leiker.


Verland graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy in 1959. A year later he
served his country by enlisting with the United States Air Force.


From the age of 14 he started working for Ben Dreiling Motors until he left for
the Air Force. When Verland returned home from his service duty he embarked on
a long career in banking. He served as Sr. Vice President of Farmers State Bank
and then Commerce Bank where he retired from. After retirement he served as a
special consultant for First National Bank and Trust.


Verland was an avid car enthusiast having owned over 300 cars in his lifetime.
He enjoyed simple day drives to area towns as well as maintaining and detailing
his cars. He was a thoughtful person who enjoyed being a jokester from time to
time which endured him to his banking clientele over his lengthy career. He was
also a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.


He is survived by his siblings, Gloria Braun and husband Ronald, Linda
Schoenthaler and Allen Leiker and wife Maggie all of Hays; a sister-in-law,
Kelly Leiker of Alpharetta, Georgia; nieces and nephews, Debra Rohleder, Danny
(Jody) Rohleder, Diana Rohleder, Donna Kay Rohleder, Marla (Danny) Stecklein,
Sandee (Tim) Werth, David (Corey) Braun, Jared (Angie) Braun, Scott (Brianna)
Schoenthaler, Amy (Bryan) Church, Ryan Leiker, Derek (Taylor) Leiker, Austin
(Alaysia) Leiker, Aaron (Cheryl) Leiker, Sean Leiker and Jordyn (Blake) Irwin;
31 great nieces and nephews and 2 great-great nieces and nephews.


Verland was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Jane White; a
brother, Ronald Leiker; a brother-in-law, Lynn Schoenthaler and a great niece.


Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Thursday, June 12, 2025 at the Immaculate
Heart of Mary Church in Hays with Fr. Nick Parker officiating. Inurnment with
Military Honors by the Hays VFW Honor Guard will follow in the St. Joseph’s
Cemetery.


Memorial visitation will be Wednesday, June 11, 2025 starting at 5:00 PM until
7:00 PM with a combined parish vigil and rosary service at 7:00 PM all at
Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory-Brock’s Chapel 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.


Memorial contributions are suggested to IHMC earmarked for liturgical items

Verland Eugene Leiker

Joseph A. (Alonzo) 'Joe' Hess, 92, Hays, died Sunday, June
8, 2025, at Via Christi Village surrounded by family. 

He was born December 12, 1932, in rural Garnett, Kansas to
Everett and Katherine (Setter) Hess.&nbsp; In 1951, he graduated from Richmond
High School then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean War.&nbsp; He attended St. Benedict’s College (n/k/a
Benedictine College) in Atchison and graduated from Kansas State College
(n/k/a/ Kansas State University).

On December 29, 1956, he was united in marriage to Virginia
Jo Philpott at St. Benedict’s Church in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He commenced his
career as an accountant in the oil and gas industry in Wichita, and in 1966, he
and Virginia moved to Hays where he began employment at Dreiling Oil Inc. and
related entities.&nbsp; He worked there until retiring in 2019.&nbsp;
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Joe was a parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays
since 1966, and he was a member of the Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights
of Columbus Assembly No. 282 and St. Joseph Third Degree Council No.
1325.&nbsp; His community involvement was extensive, including serving as a member
of the USD 489 School Board from 1975 –&nbsp;1983, including two years as
President of the Board, as well as a member of the St. Anthony Hospital
Advisory Board and North Central Kansas Area Vocational Technical School
Advisory Board.&nbsp; He was Chairman of St.
John’s Rest Home Board for 34 years, Trustee of the Leo J. and Albina Dreiling
Charitable Trust for 43 years, a President of the Parents, Teachers and Friends
Association at Thomas More Prep (n/k/a TMP-Marian), and a member of the Sisters
of St. Agnes Associates.&nbsp; Joe was recognized for his community leadership
and service with awards, which included honoree in the Hall of Fame of Fort
Hays Tech / North Central, 2006 Friend For All Seasons by TMP-Marian, Grand
Marshals (together with his wife) of the 2006 TMP-Marian homecoming, 2010 Jean
Ross Society of TMP-Marian, and St. John’s Rest Home honor for 30 years of
faithful service.&nbsp; In addition, for many
years he served as St. Nicholas at St. John’s during the Christmas holidays.
&nbsp;&nbsp;

Over the years, Joe was active in basketball, track,
hunting, dogs (particularly dachshunds and Brittany Spaniels), gardening,
pro-life, farming, backyard chef, golf, lake life at Cedar Bluff (especially
boating and fishing), woodworking, painting, and EWTN.&nbsp; Joe loved, as he put it, “family times” with
his wife and children, “welcoming many beloved grand and great-grandchildren,”
and “promoting education, Catholic churches and healthcare in the Hays
community.”&nbsp; 

Joe’s family thanks his many caregivers and clergy, who
helped him tremendously with loving care in recent years.

He is survived by his wife Virginia, daughter Elaine Marie
Nietling and husband Warren, son Vincent Joseph and wife Pat, 11 grandchildren,
David Nietling, Adam Nietling, Matthew Hess and wife Sarah, Julie Hess, Paul
Hess and wife Nekesa, Karen Hess Ringstad and husband Leif, Thomas Hess, Amy
Hess Battaglia and husband David, Mary Hess, Angela Hess, and Peter Hess, 3
great-grandchildren, Malcolm Hess, Charlotte Hess, and Hudsen Ringstad,
sisters-in-law Rebecca Dolin, Loretta Katigan, Ann Hess, and Shirley Hess, and
numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.&nbsp; 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers
George, Francis, and Everett, sister-in-law Jody Hess, and brother-in-law
Richard Dolin.&nbsp; 

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am on Wednesday,
June 18, 2025 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Fred Gatschet and Fr. Andy
Hammeke officiating.&nbsp; Private family
inurnment will be at a later date in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be
from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church and from 9:30
