PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The U.S. Mint on Wednesday ended production of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-mint-treasury-department-penny-end-production-daf6367d7e8d31d6783720d5d4667115">penny</a>, a change made to save money and because the 1-cent coin that could once buy a snack or a piece of candy had become increasingly irrelevant.

The last pennies were struck at the mint in Philadelphia, where the country’s smallest denomination coins have been&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usmint.gov/learn/coins-and-medals/circulating-coins/penny?srsltid=AfmBOorp-P0PbOJ5jRYvigQlRIm4B-3l4zGXxjxQJQtTp0bE4wPjPh8E">produced since 1793</a>, a year after Congress passed the Coinage Act. Officials said the final few pennies would be auctioned off.

“God bless America, and we’re going to save the taxpayers $56 million,” U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach said just before hitting a button to strike the final penny.

Pennies remain legal tender, but new ones will no longer be made.

The last coin to be discontinued was the half-cent in 1857, Beach said.

President Donald Trump ordered the penny's demise as costs climbed to nearly 4 cents per penny and the 1-cent valuation became somewhat obsolete. Billions of pennies remain in circulation, but they are rarely essential for financial transactions in the 21st century economy.

“For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents," Trump wrote in an online post in February. "This is so wasteful!”

Still, many people&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/no-more-penny-end-production-cent-25527a16976a8c81f91c1a4a4eba473a">have a nostalgia for them</a>, seeing them as lucky or fun to collect. And some retailers voiced concerns in recent weeks as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/penny-coins-lincoln-shortage-us-mint-trump-089cf657b3fa4d6dc21533cf6bb08cf3">supplies ran low</a>&nbsp;and the end of production drew near. They said the phase-out was abrupt and came with no government guidance on how to handle transactions.

Some rounded prices down to avoid shortchanging shoppers. Others pleaded with customers to bring exact change. The more creative among them gave out prizes, such as a free drink, in exchange for a pile of pennies.

“We have been advocating abolition of the penny for 30 years. But this is not the way we wanted it to go,” Jeff Lenard of the National Association of Convenience Stores said last month.

Some banks, meanwhile, began rationing supplies, a somewhat paradoxical result of the effort to address what many see as a glut of the coins. Over the last century, about half of the coins made at mints in Philadelphia and Denver have been pennies.

But they still have a better production cost-to-value ratio than the nickel, which costs nearly 14 cents to make. The diminutive dime,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cost-of-a-penny-nickel-dime-e38975c6811ad38ac0a986c8fccf3a4a">by comparison</a>, costs less than 6 cents to produce, and the quarter nearly 15 cents.

US Mint presses final pennies as the 1-cent coin gets canceled

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos are a hurting bunch as they prepare for their showdown with the nine-time defending AFC West champion Kansas City Chiefs this weekend.

They're still without their best defensive player with cornerback Pat Surtain (strained pectoral) about to miss his third straight game. Their leading tackler, Alex Singleton, is recovering from surgery to remove a cancerous testicular tumor and will miss at least one game and possibly more.

And their best offensive player so far, running back J.K. Dobbins, is nursing a left foot injury that is expected to sideline him, as well.

“It's our league,” coach Sean Payton said Wednesday. "You've heard me say that and we've played teams earlier in the season that have been in this position. You know, I won't get into any of the individuals, but it has to be the next man up. And you know we just finished a pretty good stretch” of seven victories in 39 days. “Now, we'll play one game in 23 days.”

The Broncos (8-2) have been installed as slight underdogs against the Chiefs (5-4), but they could bury K.C. in the divisional race with an 11th consecutive home victory Sunday at Empower Field.

They'll have to rely on several backups at key positions to get it done.

Dobbins limped off the field after an illegal but uncalled hip-drop tackle by Raiders defensive end Tyree Wilson late in the third quarter of Denver's 10-7 win over Las Vegas last Thursday night.

Concerns about his health dissipated after he returned and carried six times for 25 yards as the Broncos chewed up the final 4 1/2 minutes in the fourth quarter to secure their seventh straight win, and afterward he dismissed concerns about his health.

“I got hip-dropped. I’m good,’’ Dobbins said after rushing for 77 yards on 18 carries. “Yeah, I had a little limp there but it wasn’t bad. I’m all good. The hip-drop should have been called, though. But I’m all good.”

The next day, though, Dobbins posted an obscenity-laced rant on X, calling for the hip-drop tackles to be penalized, and he sought additional medical guidance. He missed Wednesday's practice as the Broncos installed their game plan featuring several backups.

Dobbins ranks No. 3 in the NFL with 774 yards rushing on 5 yards per carry. Rookie RJ Harvey is a distant second on the team with 214 rushing yards and his biggest contributions so far have come in the passing game with four touchdown catches.

“Listen, when we drafted him, it was his running skill set” that stood out, Payton said of Harvey. “Then you have experience in a guy like Jaleel (McLaughlin), who is explosive and has been champing at the bit. And so yeah I think sometimes players are not held back but you're watching (rookie receiver) Pat Bryant grow right before our eyes, and you're starting to see that with R.J.

"And obviously he'll have more opportunities here this game. So he's built. When you see his frame, he's built to last and that's important.”

Quarterback Bo Nix said the Broncos have faith in their depth.

“We practice all year long and go through OTAs and training camp with a lot of different pieces to the puzzle for a reason,” he said. “... I feel like everybody who's ever played this sport missed a game at some point in their life and it's a physical game played by tough people and so it's going to always present that challenge.”

Also missing practice were Surtain, wide receiver Trent Sherfield (leg), tight end Nate Adkins (knee) OLB Jonah Elliss (hamstring). On Wednesday, the Broncos also signed wide receiver Lil'Jordan Humphrey from the New York Giants' practice squad. Humphrey played in Denver the last two seasons.

The good news for Denver is wide receiver/kick returner Marvin Mims practiced again and is hopeful to return against the Chiefs after missing two games with a concussion.

The Chiefs, who have owned the division since 2016, have their own concerns as running back Isiah Pacheco has a knee injury, but Patrick Mahomes could be getting both of his starting tackles back. First-round pick Josh Simmons has returned to the team after dealing with a family matter and right tackle Jawaan Taylor is coming back from a sprained ankle.

Hays Post donates food to First Call for Help; drive continues Thursday

The Ellis County Commission, serving as the canvassing board for the 2025 General Election, certified the election for the USD 388 Board of Education, among other races.

No canvass resulted in no changes in the contested races, including the Hays City Commission and the Hays USD 489 school board.

 However, some races did not have enough candidates on the ballot and will be filled through write-in votes.

Those are listed below and include the Ellis USD 388 school board, which had no candidates on the ballot in the General Election.

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1CUzNtH9Ph/">In a Facebook post announcing his write-in candidacy</a>, Seibel said he was born and raised in Ellis and graduated from Ellis High School. He and his wife have been married for 19 years and have five children.

"I’m actively involved in local youth programs, including coaching through the Ellis Recreation Commission and the Ellis Wrestling Club," Seibel said. "I also help lead a weekly mentorship program for post-Confirmation high school students called Y-Disciple, where we engage in meaningful faith-based dialogue, cultivating relationships built on the foundations of Discipleship with Christ."

Seibel said he ran because he cares about the future of local children and schools, promising a commitment to high standards for staff and students.

He said he aims to establish a foundation of honesty, integrity, goodwill and collaboration, and to support policies that encourage long-term success.

Ellis County Clerk and Election Officer Bobbi Dreiling presented the canvassing board with 32 provisional ballots, 31 of which were accepted and one was rejected.

Dreiling said of the 31 voters, one failed to provide valid identification, 26 moved within the county, two had changed their name, one was linked to a clerical error and one applied for an advance ballot after the deadline.

All 31 were accepted and counted in the final election results. The one rejected ballot was not from a registered voter.

The final voter tally in Ellis County was 4,662, with 20,483 registered voters for a turnout of 22.76%.

Two incumbents and a former school board member were elected to the Hays USD 489 school board.

Ellis County canvass certifies 2025 election results, names new Ellis USD 388 members

A Vietnam War hero who survived a fierce battle stood before Hays on Veterans Day, sharing a message that the duty to serve continues long after the war ended.

Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Ivanhoe Love Jr. is also the first Black Command Sergeant Major to serve as an instructor at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. He reflected on his 28 years of service as an infantryman, having served in various units.

"I served in every capacity in the infantry, from squad leader up to a command sergeant major in almost every kind of unit where infantrymen serve," Love said.

Love emphasized he did not wish to glorify war, calling it “ugly,” and recalled a 1968 firefight in South Vietnam, where a much larger North Vietnamese force ambushed his small team. He lost nearly all his men but two in the initial attack.

"We fought all night," he said. "We were calling in close air support and artillery all night. ... I could hear through the bombs the screams of my men, 'Sgt. Love, come get me,' I'm crawling trying to get to these guys. I couldn't make it."

Along with a fellow captain who fought beside him that night, Love was honored for his actions. He received the Silver Star, one of the nation’s highest military decorations, an award he said he didn’t feel he earned.

"I didn't do anything. I came back alive. My men couldn't come back," Love said.

After a brief period of rest, Love returned to combat, working with a soldier he described as one of the best he had ever known, someone with “animal-like instincts,” an acute sense of smell and hearing sharper than a scout dog.

The two fought side by side almost every day. Love said he couldn’t recall a time when he wasn’t under fire. During their final mission together, while Love was conducting a routine equipment check, the soldier suffered a severe episode brought on by trauma.

"PTSD is a real-life thing. I don't know what happened to him, but I had to move forward," Love said. "[He was] an elegant example of what it does to the human mind. When you kill, and kill and kill ... but we do it for the sake of this country—no other reason, not for glory, but because of the causes we believe in."

Love returned to the United States once again and was met with hostility. First, when protesters at the airport threw urine on him, and later, when he said the Ku Klux Klan burned a cross in his front yard after he became the first African American instructor and student at Arkansas State University.

After retiring from the military in 1990, Love devoted himself to public service in Seward County, serving as a county commissioner and spending more than a decade on the Liberal City Commission, including three terms as mayor. He later became Rotary District Governor for western Kansas.

"I carried the lessons forward that I learned in the military. I discovered that the call to serve doesn't end when you take the uniform off, it simply changes its form," Love said.

Love urged action to support veterans struggling with homelessness and health care challenges, saying gratitude must translate to concrete help. He also emphasized the importance of the VFW’s role in that mission.

"Let us ensure that when we say thank you for your service. It carries with you the commitment to stand with those who are still fighting battles unseen," he said.

The ceremony at VFW Post 9076 began with the Honor Guard presenting the colors, followed by O’Loughlin Elementary students leading the Pledge of Allegiance.

The program also featured a presentation from the Voice of Democracy scholarship winner, Mariella Dreiling, who read her winning essay. The ceremony concluded with a traditional flag-folding tribute.

Maj. Ivanhoe Love Jr. is also the first Black Command Sergeant Major to serve as an instructor at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. He reflected on his 28 years of service as an infantryman, having served in various units."I served in every capacity in the infantry, from squad leader up to a command sergeant major in almost every kind of unit where infantrymen serve," Love said.Love emphasized he did not wish to glorify war, calling it “ugly,” and recalled a 1968 firefight in South Vietnam, where a much larger North Vietnamese force ambushed his small team. Vietnam War hero remembers the night he lost almost all of his men

The Hays school board decided to delay moving forward on selling land adjacent to Hays Middle School until it can obtain an appraisal.

The board is considering selling&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/717a1a84-82e4-456a-90ae-88efeb538244">7.23 acres of district-owned property at 201 W. 29th St., north of the current Hays Middle School football field, through a sealed bid process.</a>

The board plans to accept sealed bids for the property with the right to refuse any bids it receives. The proceeds from the sale of the property would be allocated to the capital outlay fund.

The board was scheduled to vote on the sale on Monday, but Allen Park, board member, said he wanted to obtain an appraisal, which would cost about $1,350.

The district already has four comparable sales to review. 

Those comparable lots sold for between $1.72 and $2.41 per square foot. 

The property closest in size to the middle school property was at 1201 E. 33rd St. This property is zoned for residential multifamily use. It consists of 7.71 acres (335,412 square feet).&nbsp;This property sold on October 20, 2020, for $577,500, which calculates to $1.72 per square foot.

Board Vice President Ken Brooks said he did not believe the appraisal was necessary and considered it a waste of money.

The board ultimately voted to move forward with the appraisal on a vote of 5-1, with Brooks voting against. Board member Jayme Goetz was absent.

The board approved a $68,250 bid from Vitztum Commercial Flooring for flooring at Hays Middle School for the cafeteria serving area and the band and vocal rooms.

The board also approved a bid for $71,086 from Nex-Tech for interior door locks, including hardware, installation and configuration for Hays Middle School.

Superintendent Ron Wilson informed the board he had successfully applied for and received two grants to reimburse the district for upgrades to the high school's tennis courts.

The district received $140,000 from the United States Tennis Association and&nbsp;$14,000 from the Missouri Valley Tennis Association, totaling $154,000. The money will be deposited into the capital outlay fund.

Board member Ruth Ruder thanked Wilson for his efforts and said the district should consider hiring a grant writer next year.

Hays USD 489 board delays sale of middle school land pending appraisal

Two contestants received the inaugural Miss Fort Hays and Miss Smoky Hills titles and are now advancing to the Miss Kansas competition.

The competition was a local pageant affiliated with the Miss America Organization, offering participants the opportunity to earn scholarships and advance toward the Miss America title.

Alyna Chavez, a junior at Fort Hays State University and member of the FHSU Tiger Debs and Delta Zeta, won the Miss Fort Hays title along with the talent award.

Morgan Allen, a sophomore at FHSU and certified nursing assistant, is pursuing a master’s degree in nursing. She won the title of Miss Smoky Hills.

The Nov. 8 pageant focused on education, community service, and personal growth, with contestants evaluated in multiple categories. Harper Lubbers received the interview award.

Miss Fort Hays Director Sherelle Peterson, who brought the competition to Hays after witnessing her daughter's rewarding experience competing in Miss Dodge City, handpicked judges with expertise in the categories being evaluated.

2025 Miss Fort Hays, Miss Smoky Hills crowned

NEW YORK (AP) — Space weather forecasters issued an alert on Tuesday for incoming severe&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/northern-lights-auroras-solar-storm-915a2364b24679c63a07066f55c53ffa">solar storms</a>&nbsp;that could produce&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/video/how-to-catch-auroras-with-noaas-prediction-tool-5c20d61840754b8e81070c87160ef6ff">colorful northern lights</a>&nbsp;and temporarily disrupt communications.

In the past few days, the sun has burped out&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/solar-storms-auroras-northern-lights-ea7dea56d466cf199837b5e266c5d9c6">several bursts of energy</a>&nbsp;called coronal mass ejections that could reach Earth Tuesday night and early Wednesday. The potential severe geomagnetic storms could disrupt radio and GPS communications, according to forecasters with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

How bright the auroras are and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/auroras-northern-lights-solar-storm-9a3399d88ec0e14293f06e77d61099c4">how far south they are visible</a>&nbsp;will depend on when the solar bursts get here and how they interact with Earth's atmosphere. The vibrant displays could be visible across much of the northern U.S., and as far south as Alabama and Northern California.

The sun is at the maximum phase of its&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sun-solar-flare-earth-ed204eef352560f09b8366bee05e2381">11-year activity cycle</a>, making the light displays more common and widespread. Colorful northern lights have decorated night skies in unexpected places and space weather experts say there are more auroras still to come.

Aurora displays known as the northern and southern lights are commonly visible near the poles, where charged particles from the sun interact with Earth’s atmosphere.

Skygazers are spotting the lights deeper into the United States and Europe because the sun is going through a major face-lift. Every 11 years, its poles swap places, causing magnetic twists and tangles along the way.

Last year, the strongest geomagnetic storm in two decades slammed Earth, producing light displays across the Northern Hemisphere. And soon afterward, a powerful solar storm dazzled skygazers far from the Arctic Circle when dancing lights appeared in unexpected places including Germany, the United Kingdom, New England and New York City.

The sun’s active spurt is expected to last at least through the end of this year, though when solar activity will peak won’t be known until months after the fact, according to NASA and NOAA.

Solar storms can bring more than colorful lights to Earth.

When fast-moving particles and plasma slam into Earth’s magnetic field, they can temporarily disrupt the power grid. Space weather can also interfere with air traffic control radio and satellites in orbit. Severe storms are capable of scrambling other radio and GPS communications.

In 1859, a severe solar storm triggered auroras as far south as Hawaii and set telegraph lines on fire in a rare event. And a 1972 solar storm may have detonated magnetic U.S. sea mines off the coast of Vietnam.

Space weather experts aren’t able to predict a solar storm months in advance. Instead, they alert relevant parties to prepare in the days before a solar outburst hits Earth.

Northern lights forecasts can be found on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/communities/aurora-dashboard-experimental">NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center website</a>&nbsp;or an aurora forecasting app.

Consider aurora-watching in a quiet, dark area away from city lights. Experts recommend skygazing from a local or national park. And check the weather forecast because clouds can cover up the spectacle entirely.

Taking a picture with a smartphone camera may also reveal hints of the aurora that aren’t visible to the naked eye.

The vibrant displays could be visible across much of the northern U.S., and as far south as Alabama and Northern California.<h2>How northern lights happen</h2>The sun is at the maximum phase of its&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sun-solar-flare-earth-ed204eef352560f09b8366bee05e2381">11-year activity cycle</a>, making the light displays more common and widespread. Colorful northern lights have decorated night skies in unexpected places and space weather experts say there are more auroras still to come.Aurora displays known as the northern and southern lights are commonly visible near the poles, where charged particles from the sun interact with Earth’s atmosphere.Skygazers are spotting the lights deeper into the United States and Europe because the sun is going through a major face-lift. Every 11 years, its poles swap places, causing magnetic twists and tangles along the way.Last year, the strongest geomagnetic storm in two decades slammed Earth, producing light displays across the Northern Hemisphere. And soon afterward, a powerful solar storm dazzled skygazers far from the Arctic Circle when dancing lights appeared in unexpected places including Germany, the United Kingdom, New England and New York City.The sun’s active spurt is expected to last at least through the end of this year, though when solar activity will peak won’t be known until months after the fact, according to NASA and NOAA.<h2>How solar storms affect Earth</h2>Solar storms can bring more than colorful lights to Earth.When fast-moving particles and plasma slam into Earth’s magnetic field, they can temporarily disrupt the power grid. Space weather can also interfere with air traffic control radio and satellites in orbit. Severe storms are capable of scrambling other radio and GPS communications.In 1859, a severe solar storm triggered auroras as far south as Hawaii and set telegraph lines on fire in a rare event. And a 1972 solar storm may have detonated magnetic U.S. sea mines off the coast of Vietnam.Space weather experts aren’t able to predict a solar storm months in advance. Instead, they alert relevant parties to prepare in the days before a solar outburst hits Earth.<h2>How to see auroras</h2>Northern lights forecasts can be found on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/communities/aurora-dashboard-experimental">NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center website</a>&nbsp;or an aurora forecasting app.Consider aurora-watching in a quiet, dark area away from city lights. Experts recommend skygazing from a local or national park. And check the weather forecast because clouds can cover up the spectacle entirely.Taking a picture with a smartphone camera may also reveal hints of the aurora that aren’t visible to the naked eye.

Hays Post donates to Community Assistance Center; food drive continues Wed., Thurs.

The Ellis County Commission will discuss proposed state legislation that could cap property valuation increases during its 8:30 a.m. meeting on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Ellis County Appraiser Eugen Rupp will explain how implementing a property valuation cap, such as a 3% limit, could lead to disparities in local housing markets.

The county commission will continue discussions on future capital improvement projects and potential bond financing options, as the county lacks sufficient funds to complete them in full. Projects include:

• Sheriff's office and communications department renovation • Combined EMS/fire facility in Ellis • Fire storage building at public works • Landfill transfer station expansion

Hutton Builders representatives will present cost estimates for a complete design-and-build of all projects. A Glassman Corporation representative will provide information on the failing HVAC system at the county courthouse and fan coul replacements needed in the administrative building.&nbsp;

Ellis County Communications Director Jeff Ridgway will discuss a grant from the Kansas State 911 Board, which funds indoor and outdoor geographic mapping of infrastructures. Local facilities eligible for grant funding include:

• Public and private K–12 schools • Public post-secondary educational institutions • Government buildings • Mass gathering sites • Health care facilities

Several Hays schools have already received first-round grant awards. The county plans to pursue future funding opportunities for additional facilities.

The commission will consider approving the authorization of the Public Works Department to assist the city of Schoenche in repairing a ditch along Front Street, utilizing county labor and equipment. The cost estimate is $758.

The commission will consider approving a conditional-use permit for Tilman Infrastructure to construct a cellular tower and telecommunications equipment at 753 Vincent Ave. in Victoria.

Landowners in the Suburban Estates development will ask the commission to consider road improvements for their neighborhood and the possibility of establishing a community improvement district.&nbsp;

Ellis County Commission to discuss property tax caps

When I grew up on our farm, just east of Hays, we would go into town to see my Uncle Zaccheus Dechant and his wife, Aunt Ella. Later, I would work for him at the Fort Hays State warehouse. 

I remember Uncle “Hays," as we called him, telling me that Arthur Klaus, who lived nearby, was killed in Vietnam. For some reason, that stuck in my mind. Now, nearly 60 years later, I decided to research Arthur’s life and death. When I did so, I learned that eight men from Ellis County died in Vietnam.

I will start with Arthur Klaus, since his name piqued my interest. Arthur Lee Klaus was born to Wilfred and Carolyn Gerstner Klaus on Sept. 7, 1948, in Hays. Klaus was drafted into the U.S. Army around July 1969. He was trained as an infantryman and on July 29, 1968, began his one-year tour of Vietnam as a corporal for the Bobcats of the 25th Infantry Division, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry, B Company. 

On Feb. 8, 1969, B Company was conducting a reconnaissance in force near Hua Nghia, South Vietnam, when enemy soldiers attacked the unit. At 1811 hours, Company B had two armored personnel carriers hit by RPG rounds. The company dusted off six wounded Bobcats and one dead Bobcat. Cpl. Klaus presumably was the Bobcat killed, as the records found by this author indicated he was the only member of B Company killed on Feb. 8, 1969, and that he died of small arms fire.

Klaus’ father lived until 2008, and his mother died in 2022, at the age of 93. Klaus had a brother and two sisters who survived him. Klaus’s body was recovered, and his grave is in St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays. 

Klaus was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge, Purple Heart, Marksmanship Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross.

Not all servicemembers who died in Vietnam died in combat, but their loss is just as hard. Gary Lee Binder, born Dec. 6, 1946, enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was a construction man (CN) in Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 121 (NMCB-121), 3rd Naval Construction Brigade, United States Naval Forces, Vietnam. 

He died in a vehicle crash in the Thua Thien province on Oct. 13, 1967. Binder was working on a road crew placing a seal coating on Route 1, three miles south of Phu Bai Combat Base in Thua Thien Province, RVN. Binder reportedly was on the side of the road when he was run over by a dump truck, which was backing up to dump a load of sand. He received the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Major Norman A. Leikam also was not killed by hostile fire, but rather was killed in an incident at Camp Halloway Base, Pleiku, Vietnam, on Oct. 23, 1965, in the Quang Ngai province. He was a helicopter pilot and battery commander in the 1st Cavalry Division, 2nd Battalion, 20th Ara, Battery B. Major Leikam graduated from Hays High School in 1949 and Fort Hays State in 1953.

Major Leikam is buried in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays, and was awarded the Bronze Star, Air Medal, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. Major Leikam was survived by his wife Patricia, a daughter, Debra, two sons, Michael and Steven and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Leikam. His father-in-law and mother-in-law were Mr. and Mrs. Felix Giebler.&nbsp; Patricia Leikam was told by officials that her husband was shot by “an individual who went berserk.” Patricia also stated that he was supposed to leave for the United States after his tour to attend War College.

Major Charles W. Malone was a logistics officer with the Headquarters &amp; Headquarters Company (HHC), 54th General Support Group, 1st Logistical Command, U.S. Army, Republic of Vietnam. The 54th GS Group was responsible for controlling combat service units and other logistical support activities in the Cam Ranh Bay area of Khanh Hoa Province, RVN. On Oct. 5, 1969, Major Malone was in a hospital at Cam Ranh Bay when he died of an apparent heart seizure. He was 44 years old.

Major Malone is buried at the Russell, Kansas, cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, his four sons, Michael, Robert, Steven, and William, as well as two stepsons, Mevin and Jimmy Yanda. Major Malone was also survived by his mother, Lovisa Malone. 

Major Malone was the commanding officer of the 995th Maintenance Company of Kansas Army National Guard in Hays, which was activated for service in Vietnam. Previously, Major Malone served in World War II as a First Sergeant and also served in the Korean War. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Korean&nbsp;Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Korea War Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

SPC4 James Earl Heskett was born on Feb. 4, 1944, and was drafted into the U.S. Army and trained as an infantryman. He was a member of the 198th Light Infantry Brigade, 1st Battalion, 52nd Infantry, B Company. He began his Vietnam tour on Oct. 6, 1967. On Jan. 7, 1968, he died by hostile action of multiple fragmentation wounds in the Quang Ngai province of South Vietnam. He is buried at Oakley and received the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, Marksmanship Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross.

Specialist 4 Olis Ray Rigby was born on Aug. 16, 1948, and was only 19 years old when he was killed on Nov. 21, 1967, on Hill 875 in the Kontum province in South Vietnam. SPC 4 Rigby was missing in action for a period of time and was determined to have died of multiple fragmentation wounds. He enlisted in the United States Army, entering the service through the regular military channel. He began his tour on April 25, 1967. His military occupation or specialty was Medical Specialist, and he was attached to 173rd Airborne Brigade, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry, Headquarters Company.

Awards bestowed upon SPC4 Rigby included the Purple Heart, Marksmanship Badge, Parachutist Badge, Combat Medical Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation and Vietnam Gallantry Cross. Rigby is buried at Ft. Hays Memorial Gardens, Hays. His military stone says HHC, 503 INF,173 ABN PH. His parents were Kenneth Rigby and Juanita Van Pool.

Like SPC4 Rigby, Private First Class Robert Lee Urban was only 19 when his convoy was ambushed by mortar fire in Hua Nghia province in South Vietnam on Oct. 8, 1968. PFC Urban was a medic with Company A. 3/187th Infantry of the 101st Airborne Division. PFC Urban was awarded the Purple Heart, Marksmanship Badge, Parachutist Badge, Combat Medical Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation, and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross.

He was born on Nov. 23, 1948, to Clarence and Evelyn Urban, and was their only child. PFC Urban was also survived by his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Urban, and his maternal grandfather, Michael Fross. He is buried in St. Joseph Cemetery/Mt. Allen Cemetery in Hays. PFC Urban’s parents had received a letter from Robert only two days before his death. 

Urban was a 1965 graduate of St. Joseph Military Academy, Hays, and worked for the Samsonite factory in Denver after graduation until he enlisted in 1968. At the time of his death, PFC Urban had been in the military for only five months before being sent to Vietnam on Sept. 6, 1968.

1LT Daniel Leo Neuburger was born on July 21, 1945, in Ellis. His father, Edward Ludwig Neuburger, was 26, and his mother, Kathleen Eleanor Wiesner, was 23. Neuburger graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy in Hays in 1964 and from the United States Military Academy in 1967. His military occupation or specialty was Field Artillery Unit Commander. He was attached to 4th Infantry Division, 6th Battalion, 29th Artillery, Battery B and was a forward observer. Neuburger arrived in Vietnam on July 4, 1968.

Neuburger fought near Dak To in Vietnam. Strategically, this was an important battleground because it was close to the Ho Chi Minh Trail, which was the trail the North used to get supplies to their troops. Dak To is located at the junction of two valleys that run into South Vietnam from Cambodia and Laos. It was one of the main emptying points for the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

A 4th Division publication gave this history of Neuburger’s death: “During the late summer of 1968, the 4th Infantry Division conducted reconnaissance and surveillance of the Cambodian border in Military Region II to block enemy infiltration routes from both Cambodia and Laos across the Central Highlands into the coastal provinces. The Division was tasked with destroying North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong units and conducted spoiling attacks on enemy base areas and supply installations. 

At 6:20 p.m. on Aug. 14, during combat operations near Fire Support Base 29, seven kilometers (4.3 miles) southwest of Ben Het&nbsp;village in Kontum Province, RVN, the 3rd and 4th platoons of A Company, 3rd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment received a heavy weapons attack, which included 75mm recoilless rifle and 82mm mortar fire.

&nbsp;A U.S. Air Force Forward Air Controller flying close air support for the besieged U.S. units received heavy ground fire and was forced to return to Dak To with three hits on his aircraft. The Americans suffered heavy losses in the contact, with 14 killed. The lost personnel included (from A -3/12) PFC Robert I. Brown, SP4 Pedro J. Camacho-Rodriguez, SGT Raymond L. Daniels, PFC Roy L. Edelstein, 1LT Leo L. Hadley, PFC Scott D. Henry, SP4 Gary L. Maloy, SP4 John B. Mularz, PFC Steve D. Lee, PFC Bobby L. Riley, PFC Francis A. Schwarz, and SFC Henryk T. Sulatycki; (from HHC-3/12) medic SP4 Robert J. Santoro; and (from B Btry, 6th Bn, 29th Arty) forward observer 1LT Daniel L. Neuburger. Brown and Henry were posthumously promoted to Corporal. Enemy losses were not reported.”

In addition to Neuburger being survived by his parents and his sisters, Donetta Robben, Billie Fuller, Peggy Waldschmidt and Kathleen Morris. Neuburger was also survived by his brothers, Glenn, Dean, Thomas and Mark Neuburger. Glenn and Thomas were also veterans.

1LT Neuburger’s awards included the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Marksmanship Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross. 1LT Neuburger is buried in Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Ellis.

These eight men are on the wall of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C., and I am certain their families still grieve for them. For most of the rest of us, they are just names of those who paid with their lives for the defense of their country. My sole goal in writing this article was to remember these men for their sacrifice.

Malone was a logistics officer with the Headquarters &amp; Headquarters Company (HHC), 54th General Support Group, 1st Logistical Command, U.S. Army, Republic of Vietnam. The 54th GS Group was responsible for controlling combat service units and other logistical support activities in the Cam Ranh Bay area of Khanh Hoa Province, RVN. On Oct. 5, 1969, Major Malone was in a hospital at Cam Ranh Bay when he died of an apparent heart seizure. He was 44 years old.Major Malone is buried at the Russell, Kansas, cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, his four sons, Michael, Robert, Steven, and William, as well as two stepsons, Mevin and Jimmy Yanda. Major Malone was also survived by his mother, Lovisa Malone. Major Malone was the commanding officer of the 995th Maintenance Company of Kansas Army National Guard in Hays, which was activated for service in Vietnam. Previously, Major Malone served in World War II as a First Sergeant and also served in the Korean War. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Korean&nbsp;Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Korea War Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.<figure>

 </figure>James Earl Heskett&nbsp;SPC4 James Earl Heskett was born on Feb. 4, 1944, and was drafted into the U.S. Army and trained as an infantryman. He was a member of the 198th Light Infantry Brigade, 1st Battalion, 52nd Infantry, B Company. He began his Vietnam tour on Oct. 6, 1967. On Jan. 7, 1968, he died by hostile action of multiple fragmentation wounds in the Quang Ngai province of South Vietnam. He is buried at Oakley and received the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, Marksmanship Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross.<figure>

 </figure>Olis Ray RigbySpecialist 4 Olis Ray Rigby was born on Aug. 16, 1948, and was only 19 years old when he was killed on Nov. 21, 1967, on Hill 875 in the Kontum province in South Vietnam. SPC 4 Rigby was missing in action for a period of time and was determined to have died of multiple fragmentation wounds. He enlisted in the United States Army, entering the service through the regular military channel. He began his tour on April 25, 1967. His military occupation or specialty was Medical Specialist, and he was attached to 173rd Airborne Brigade, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry, Headquarters Company.Awards bestowed upon SPC4 Rigby included the Purple Heart, Marksmanship Badge, Parachutist Badge, Combat Medical Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation and Vietnam Gallantry Cross. Rigby is buried at Ft. Hays Memorial Gardens, Hays. His military stone says HHC, 503 INF,173 ABN PH. His parents were Kenneth Rigby and Juanita Van Pool.<figure>

 </figure>Robert Lee UrbanLike SPC4 Rigby, Private First Class Robert Lee Urban was only 19 when his convoy was ambushed by mortar fire in Hua Nghia province in South Vietnam on Oct. 8, 1968. PFC Urban was a medic with Company A. 3/187th Infantry of the 101st Airborne Division. PFC Urban was awarded the Purple Heart, Marksmanship Badge, Parachutist Badge, Combat Medical Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation, and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross.He was born on Nov. 23, 1948, to Clarence and Evelyn Urban, and was their only child. PFC Urban was also survived by his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Urban, and his maternal grandfather, Michael Fross. He is buried in St. Joseph Cemetery/Mt. Allen Cemetery in Hays. PFC Urban’s parents had received a letter from Robert only two days before his death. Urban was a 1965 graduate of St. Joseph Military Academy, Hays, and worked for the Samsonite factory in Denver after graduation until he enlisted in 1968. At the time of his death, PFC Urban had been in the military for only five months before being sent to Vietnam on Sept. 6, 1968.<figure>

 </figure>Daniel Leo Neuburger1LT Daniel Leo Neuburger was born on July 21, 1945, in Ellis. His father, Edward Ludwig Neuburger, was 26, and his mother, Kathleen Eleanor Wiesner, was 23. Neuburger graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy in Hays in 1964 and from the United States Military Academy in 1967. His military occupation or specialty was Field Artillery Unit Commander. He was attached to 4th Infantry Division, 6th Battalion, 29th Artillery, Battery B and was a forward observer. Neuburger arrived in Vietnam on July 4, 1968.Neuburger fought near Dak To in Vietnam. Strategically, this was an important battleground because it was close to the Ho Chi Minh Trail, which was the trail the North used to get supplies to their troops. Dak To is located at the junction of two valleys that run into South Vietnam from Cambodia and Laos. It was one of the main emptying points for the Ho Chi Minh Trail.A 4th Division publication gave this history of Neuburger’s death: “During the late summer of 1968, the 4th Infantry Division conducted reconnaissance and surveillance of the Cambodian border in Military Region II to block enemy infiltration routes from both Cambodia and Laos across the Central Highlands into the coastal provinces. The Division was tasked with destroying North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong units and conducted spoiling attacks on enemy base areas and supply installations. At 6:20 p.m. on Aug. 14, during combat operations near Fire Support Base 29, seven kilometers (4.3 miles) southwest of Ben Het&nbsp;village in Kontum Province, RVN, the 3rd and 4th platoons of A Company, 3rd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment received a heavy weapons attack, which included 75mm recoilless rifle and 82mm mortar fire.&nbsp;A U.S. Air Force Forward Air Controller flying close air support for the besieged U.S. units received heavy ground fire and was forced to return to Dak To with three hits on his aircraft. The Americans suffered heavy losses in the contact, with 14 killed. The lost personnel included (from A -3/12) PFC Robert I. Brown, SP4 Pedro J. Camacho-Rodriguez, SGT Raymond L. Daniels, PFC Roy L. Edelstein, 1LT Leo L. Hadley, PFC Scott D. Henry, SP4 Gary L. Maloy, SP4 John B. Mularz, PFC Steve D. Lee, PFC Bobby L. Riley, PFC Francis A. Schwarz, and SFC Henryk T. Sulatycki; (from HHC-3/12) medic SP4 Robert J. Santoro; and (from B Btry, 6th Bn, 29th Arty) forward observer 1LT Daniel L. Neuburger. Brown and Henry were posthumously promoted to Corporal. Enemy losses were not reported.”In addition to Neuburger being survived by his parents and his sisters, Donetta Robben, Billie Fuller, Peggy Waldschmidt and Kathleen Morris. Neuburger was also survived by his brothers, Glenn, Dean, Thomas and Mark Neuburger. Glenn and Thomas were also veterans.1LT Neuburger’s awards included the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Marksmanship Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross. 1LT Neuburger is buried in Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Ellis.These eight men are on the wall of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C., and I am certain their families still grieve for them. For most of the rest of us, they are just names of those who paid with their lives for the defense of their country. Ellis County casualties of Vietnam

Join Peter Pan and his mischievous fairy sidekick, Tinkerbell, as they sprinkle pixie dust and take you on an unforgettable adventure during Hays High School’s production of “Peter Pan – Journey to Neverland.”

Based on J.M. Barrie’s classic tale, Peter Pan is one of the most beloved and frequently performed family favorites of all time. Peter and his mischievous fairy sidekick, Tinkerbell, visit the nursery of the Darling children late one night and, with a sprinkle of pixie dust, begin a magical journey across the stars that none of them will ever forget. In the adventure of a lifetime, the travelers meet the Lost Boys and come face-to-face with a group of pirates, and of course, the villainous Captain Hook.

Scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. on Nov. 13-15 and at 2 p.m. on Nov. 16, it will be the first theatrical production in the new Performing Arts Center (PAC) at HHS. General admission tickets are $8 and are available at the door or at <a href="https://gofan.co/app/school/KS25142">https://gofan.co/app/school/KS25142</a>.

According to director Bill Gasper, the play is an original non-musical adaptation of the 1911 novel by J.M. Barrie, which is an expanded version of his 1904 play. Gasper said both the novel and play are in the public domain, which has led to numerous non-musical and musical adaptations.

“Many people mistakenly believe that Peter Pan is a musical, but that’s not the case,” Gasper said. “The first musical adaptation was the 1950 Broadway production with music and lyrics by Leonard Bernstein. In fact, it wasn’t even a full-scale musical. A later 1954 musical adaptation became the version most people recognize. Disney also released an animated musical version in 1953.”

Gasper said the HHS version maintains the charm of the original and explores themes of childhood, imagination, and the transition from childhood to adulthood. Changes in the play involve the humanization of Tinkerbell, as well as enhancing the roles of Tiger Lily, the Lost Boys, and a group of bumbling pirates.

 </figure>One thing audiences will not see is actors “flying” about the stage, Gasper said.“That type of theater rigging requires specialized training and can be very expensive,” Gasper said. “We’re hopeful that audience imagination will supplant the actual act of soaring above the stage. Our version features plenty of action with humorous moments throughout. It truly is a fun performance for the entire family.”<figure>
