SEDGWICK COUNTY —A woman who shot at a police officer inside an east Wichita grocery store has been sentenced. 

District Judge Jeffrey Syrios sentenced 34-year-old Danielle Robinson, of Salina, to just more than 16-years in prison, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

On October 4, 2021, Robinson was inside the Whole Foods store at 1423 N. Webb Road, armed with a gun. She walked in and out of the store, pointing the pistol at the windows of the store from inside and outside. It appeared she was under the influence.

When two officers arrived, she refused to drop the gun and fired it once at the officers. Both fired back, wounding her. She was released from a hospital the next day.

Robinson was scheduled for a jury trial in June of this year but pled guilty on January 18, to two counts of attempted second degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

Prison for Kan. woman who shot at police from grocery store 

JOHNSON COUNTY —A man accused in a deadly Kansas crash has entered a plea in the case.

On Jan. 16, Alexander G. Kohrs, 25, pleaded guilty to reckless second degree murder in the October 2022 automobile crash that killed 62-year-old Karla O'Malley, according to the Johnson County District Attorney's office.

"On the night of the crash, Karla had dinner with her daughter and granddaughters – the two little lights of her life," according to her obituary.&nbsp;

She helped with bath, playtime and bed before heading home, only to be hit from behind by a drunk driver on a residential street near her home, near 95th Street and Moody Park Drive in Overland Park.

"In an instant she went from being a vibrant, healthy woman to enduring severe full-body injuries. Her medical team at Research Medical Center took heroic measures to save her life and heal her body. She fought courageously for nearly 40 days to survive for her family, but she never again regained consciousness. "

Kohrs is scheduled for sentencing April 16, according to the district attorney's office.

Man admits role in crash that killed Kansas grandmother

Charles Russell “Chuck” Parmer, 87, passed away February 22, 2024, at Country Living Memory Care of Larned. He was born on October 1, 1936, in Bascom, Fla. to Gussie and Esther (Jordan) Parmer. He married Carolyn Sue Hopper on April 21, 1960, in Scott City. She died September 9, 2017.&nbsp;

A resident of Great Bend since 1997, Chuck was formerly of Hays. He was a member of the American Legion Post #180, Lake Barton Golf Club First United Methodist Church where he was active as an usher and involved in Sunday School. Chuck was the branch manager for Cen-Kan Supply and American Electric, then later retired from Winnelson Company in 1997. He was a United States Air Force Airman 1st Class, having served from 1958-1963.&nbsp;

Survivors include, a son, Sheldon Parmer and wife Tammy of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Sonya Rein and husband J.D. of Great Bend; three grandchildren, Ali Doyle (Michael), Thomas Rein (Meghan) and Sagan Johnson (Matt); and two great grandchildren, Myla Rein and Bowie Johnson. &nbsp;Also surviving is a sister in law, Martha Parmer of Shorterville, Ala.; Sue’s sister, Joyce Ramsey of Scott City; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Branton Parmer; and a sister, Alice Jeanette Lee.&nbsp;

Charles Russell “Chuck” Parmer

Lifelong Goodland, Kansas resident, Jeanne L. Harding, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on February 24, 2024, at Goodland Regional Medical Center in Goodland, Kansas.&nbsp;

She was born on October 21, 1925, in Goodland, Kansas to Bernard and Loraine (Hamilton) Galbreth. &nbsp;Jeanne was very proud of her heritage. &nbsp;She loved her grandparents JG and Ethel Hamilton. &nbsp;She spent most of her childhood with them at the family’s Coal and Feed business. &nbsp;Her great grandmother was a Cherokee Indian.

Jeanne had deep roots in Sherman County. &nbsp;Her great grandfather Isaac Houston homesteaded in southwest Sherman County in 1886. &nbsp;He became one of the first county commissioners for two terms. &nbsp;Her family was significantly involved in the business development of Goodland.

Jeanne graduated from Sherman Community High School in Goodland, KS in 1943. &nbsp;On October 14, 1944, she married Don Harding in Goodland. &nbsp; Jeanne worked for many years as a Dispatcher for Great Plains Electric Company retiring in 1987. Jeanne was a member of Crime Stoppers, Good Sam Camper Club and the Methodist church quilting ladies. &nbsp;She was a good cook and loved to bake pies. &nbsp;One of Jeanne’s biggest highlights after retiring was her and Don traveling with the Good Sam Camper Club. They also took many trips on their own. &nbsp;She was always involved with her children’s activities, Ron in Boy Scouts and LaDona in 4-H, and then with her grandchildren. Jeanne was a Boy Scout chili feed &amp; Catch a Pig sponsor for many years.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather EW Van Meter, husband Don, and great grandson Brock William Frerichs.&nbsp;

She is survived by her son Ron Harding, daughter LaDona (Richard) Frerichs of Goodland, KS; brother-in-law Bob Harding of Goodland, KS; grandchildren Bret (Jennifer) Frerichs of Goddard, KS and Malissa Sloan of Broomfield, CO; great grandchildren Brady (Kylie) Frerichs, Brendan Frerichs all of Garden Plain, KS, Jett Sloan of Broomfield, CO.

Jeanne L. Harding

Daniel Lee Juarez, 61, died at his home in Garden City, Kansas on February 25, 2024. He was born October 4th, 1962, the son of Ray Sr. and Dora Juarez in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He moved to Garden City in 1982. He met the love of his life Grace Marinez in August 1988, three months later they married on December 10, 1988, in Syracuse, Kansas. She Survives.

Daniel enjoyed collecting classic cars and sports cars. He was a loyal Denver Broncos fan and liked watching Nascar. He enjoyed woodworking and going to concerts, Bronco games. A bit of a musician himself, he liked his music loud and his cars fast. Daniel had an adventurous spirit and lived life that way. Most of all he loved doing life with his best friend and loving wife of 35 years, "Gracie". They have 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 4 great grand babies. He was proud of them all and loved them dearly.He had previously been employed at Tyson, Monfort, Cash and Carry Lumber. He spent his last 25 years of employment working for Heartland Coca-Cola. First as the warehouse manager and then as an equipment technician.

Survivors include his wife Grace Juarez; Children-Stephanie Marinez, Christopher Marinez and Michael Juarez. Grandchildren-Hailee Near (Aron Sanchez), Alyssa Nava (Alejandro Abundis), Salvador Nava (Anna Martinez), Michael Marinez, Jeremy Lucas Jr. and Daniella Preston: Great grandchildren- Aleena Sanchez, Aron Sanchez Jr., Ashton Nava Alba and Avani Abundis. All from Garden City. Father-Ray Juarez Sr. (Roxanne) Denver, Co. &nbsp; Gail Lamberson, age 73, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at Western Prairie Senior Living Community in Ulysses. He was born October 28, 1950, in Dumont, Texas, the son of Wilber Lee and Tempie (Overton) Lamberson.

Gail came to Ulysses at 3 years old and was a member of the Ulysses High School Class of 1968. Gail was inducted into the United States Army and served until his Honorable Discharge in April of 1972. He married Sharlett Betterton on March 21, 1970, in Ulysses. His hobbies included working with stained glass, restoring old cars, drag racing, and attending and showing his 1997 SS Camaro SLP at car shows. He enjoyed spending time with his grandsons and attending their activities. Gail worked at Webber Supply, owned and operated Gail Lamberson Pump Service, and retired from Minter-Wilson Well Service after 20 plus years of service. He was a member of the Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79 in Ulysses and served on the Funeral Honor Guard for years.

Gail is survived by his wife, Sharlett of their home; daughters, Tess Peden and husband, Kurtis, and Brandi Salinas and husband, Francisco, all of Ulysses; brothers, Kenneth Lamberson of North Carolina, Garry Lamberson of Washington, Wayne Lamberson of Ulysses; sister, Ginger Kilburn of Missouri; four grandchildren, Tyler Peden and wife, Alexis, Tanner Peden, Braysen Salinas, and Jaxsen Salinas; and two great-grandchildren, Finn and Miles Peden.

Gail Lamberson

R. Allen Klein, 86, passed away February 25, 2024 at Country Living, Home Plus of Larned.

He was born April 19, 1937 in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Charles Roy and Gertrude Louise (Saxton) Klein.

Allen was raised on the family home place west of Burdett and graduated from Burdett High School in 1956 as president of his senior class. He attended Fort Hays State University, where he met Joyce Rodine Kessler. They were married on January 26, 1958. She passed away on October 21, 2000. On February 2, 2002, he married Bonnie (Badger) Neeley in Rozel. &nbsp;She passed away October 9, 2019.

Allen was president of the Burdett Blue Ribbon 4-H Club; served on the Burdett Co-op board for thirteen years; helped start the Triag Co-op and was president of it for one year. He served on the Big Bend Water Board for seven years and on the Keysville Twp. Board for several years. Allen was president of the Burdett Alumni 2015-2017.

After serving in the U.S. Army from 1958-1960, he resumed farming in the Rozel area. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, first in Burdett and later in Rozel. He was chairman of the Administrative Council in Rozel for fourteen years.

Allen was predeceased by his parents, grandparents Harry and Gertie (Kilborn) Klein and Hugh and Emma (Keller) Saxton, his wife Joyce and his wife Bonnie.

He is survived by four siblings: Kendall (DeeLores) Klein, Atwood, Lyn (Faye) Klein, Hays, Nila (Don) Walker, Hays, and Neva Klein, Wichita. He and Joyce are the parents of four children who survive him: Tim (Norene) Klein of Wamego, Kansas; Randy (Debbie) Klein of Paola, Kansas; Jol (Sherri) Klein of Wamego, Kansas, and Marta Klein of DR-Congo, Africa; nine grandchildren: Tasha (Brad) Rice, Oree (Allison) Klein, Caleb (Jami) Klein, Josh (Stephanie) Klein, Seth (Kayla) Klein, Micah (Lauren) Klein, Gabby (Daniel) Jensen, Mollie (Patrick) Hobbs, Jacob Klein; ten great grandchildren, Oren, Joyce, Jax, Hattie, Jackson, Olivia, Isabella, Oliver, Kessler, and Kenan.

Allen Klein, 86, passed away February 25, 2024 at Country Living, Home Plus of Larned.He was born April 19, 1937 in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Charles Roy and Gertrude Louise (Saxton) Klein.Allen was raised on the family home place west of Burdett and graduated from Burdett High School in 1956 as president of his senior class. He attended Fort Hays State University, where he met Joyce Rodine Kessler. They were married on January 26, 1958. She passed away on October 21, 2000. On February 2, 2002, he married Bonnie (Badger) Neeley in Rozel. &nbsp;She passed away October 9, 2019.Allen was president of the Burdett Blue Ribbon 4-H Club; served on the Burdett Co-op board for thirteen years; helped start the Triag Co-op and was president of it for one year. He served on the Big Bend Water Board for seven years and on the Keysville Twp. Board for several years. Allen was president of the Burdett Alumni 2015-2017.After serving in the U.S. Army from 1958-1960, he resumed farming in the Rozel area. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, first in Burdett and later in Rozel. SEDGWICK COUNTY—A Kansas man will go to prison for a fatal Kansas crash after he entered a plea deal in the case.

On Friday, 27- year-old Dalton Jones of Wichita agreed to serve 12 months in jail with work release authorized, pay a $2,500 fine and pay restitution in the amount of $10,832.97, according to the Sedgwick County District attorney's office.&nbsp;In January, he pled guilty to one count of vehicular homicide.

Just before 6a.m. October 27, 2022, a vehicle driven by 70-year-old Paula McKinney was westbound on 53rd Street at N Air Cap Drive when she attempted to turn left into a convenience store, according to Park City Police.

A vehicle driven by Jones was eastbound traveling 82mph in a 40mph zone, according to court documents, when McKinney turned in front of Jones.

EMS transported both McKinney and Jones to a local hospital. McKinney was pronounced dead from her injuries.&nbsp;

(AP) — The man accused of firing the first shots at the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-super-bowl-parade-shooting-kansas-city-62e69a17b469b854afd7bcc3f548d1fc">Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl rally</a>&nbsp;told authorities he felt threatened, while a second man said he pulled the trigger because someone was shooting at him, according to court documents.

Experts say that even though the shooting left one bystander dead and roughly two dozen people injured, 23-year-old Lyndell Mays and 18-year-old Dominic Miller might have good cases for self-defense through the state’s “stand your ground” law.

Missouri is among more than 30 states that have adopted some version of stand your ground laws over the past two decades, said Robert Spitzer, a professor emeritus of political science at the State University of New York, Cortland, whose research focuses on gun policy and politics. While earlier laws allowed people to use force to protect themselves in their homes, stand your ground provides even broader self-defense rights regardless of the location.

Now, the mass shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl celebration could be a new test of those expanded protections, and comes as self-defense already is at the center of another&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ralph-yarl/">high-profile Kansas City shooting</a>&nbsp;that left Ralph Yarl wounded.

“This illustrates in a dramatic way the fundamental problem, especially when it’s a public gathering where there are thousands and thousands of people, and even a highly trained police officer often cannot avoid injuring others in a gunfire exchange in a public place,” said Spitzer, who wrote the book “Guns Across America: Reconciling Gun Rules and Rights.”

Trial attorney Daniel Ross described the stand your ground law as a “formidable defense” that he and many other Kansas City defense attorneys anticipate will be used in Mays' and Miller's cases. He said the law puts the onus on the prosecution to disprove claims that a shooting is lawful self-defense.

“Collateral damage under Missouri law is excused if you’re actually engaged in lawful self-defense and there’s other folks injured,” he said.

There are limits to the defense, however, said Eric Ruben, a law professor at the S.M.U. Dedman School of Law in Dallas who has written on stand your ground and self-defense immunity.

“Even though Missouri has robust stand-your-ground laws, that doesn’t mean you can spray bullets into a crowd in the name of defending yourself or others,” Ruben said.

The barrage of gunfire Feb. 14 outside Kansas City’s historic Union Station happened as the celebration that drew an estimated 1 million fans was concluding. A&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-super-bowl-parade-shooting-kansas-city-62e69a17b469b854afd7bcc3f548d1fc">woman died</a>&nbsp;while watching the rally with her family, and nearly two dozen others — more than half of them children — were injured and survived.

Kansas City already was grappling with the shooting of Yarl, a Black teenager, who survived a bullet wound to the head when he went to the wrong house in April 2023 to pick up his brothers. Andrew Lester, an 85-year-old white man, is planning to claim&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-wichita-topeka-legislature-gun-politics-6f61a926a56353a4b22ffecf90c46be3">self-defense</a>&nbsp;when he goes to trial in October. His attorney said the retiree was terrified by the stranger on his doorstep.

While the Super Bowl celebration shooting was a far different scenario, it raises anew questions about how far people can go to protect themselves and what happens when the innocent become victims.

Mays and Miller are each charged with second-degree murder and other counts.

Probable cause statements suggest that both men felt threatened. Mays said he picked out one person in a group at random and started shooting because they said, “I'm going to get you,” and he took that to mean, “I'm going to kill you,” the statement said.

Miller said under questioning that he fired four or five times because someone was shooting at him. His friend, Marques Harris, told&nbsp;<a href="https://fox4kc.com/news/friend-says-chiefs-parade-shooting-suspect-was-only-protecting-him/">WDAF-TV</a>&nbsp;that Miller was only trying to protect him after he was shot in the neck.

Miller’s attorney didn’t return phone and email messages seeking comment. No attorney was listed for Mays in online court records.

Two juveniles also face&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-super-bowl-parade-shooting-kansas-city-278e2d3e2cfece1cbe958511e54127ad">gun-related and resisting arrest</a>&nbsp;charges.

Missouri has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-super-bowl-parade-shooting-kansas-city-938583b1e9aa3b3a45f8a012e7b80fee">few firearm regulations</a>, and two of its cities — Kansas City and St. Louis — annually have among the nation's highest homicide rates. Missouri’s current Republican lawmakers have largely defended the state’s gun laws, instead blaming prosecutors and other local elected officials in the two cities.

And Republican Gov. Mike Parson, speaking to reporters last week, cited societal problems — not guns — as the reason for the violence. “I believe it's much more than a gun," he said.

When&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/missouri-lawmakers-loosen-gun-laws-back-voter-photo-id-c973268d37704b9b9b221e59c5b5dc7d?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share">Republican lawmakers in 2016</a>&nbsp;expanded the state's already-extensive self-defense protections by enacting the current stand your ground law, Black Missouri lawmakers raised concerns. The law also allowed most adults to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/missouri-lawmakers-loosen-gun-laws-back-voter-photo-id-c973268d37704b9b9b221e59c5b5dc7d?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share">carry concealed guns</a>&nbsp;without a permit.

Racial disparities are rife among those who invoke the defense, with an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.urban.org/urban-wire/american-criminal-justice-color-blind-statistics-say-no">Urban Institute</a>&nbsp;study showing white shooters are more likely to benefit than Black defendants.

Rittenhouse’s actions became a flashpoint in the debate over guns, vigilantism and racial injustice in the U.S.

The shooting death of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/trayvon-martin">Trayvon Martin</a>, a Black 17-year-old, by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/george-zimmerman">George Zimmerman</a>&nbsp;also spurred concerns about stand your ground laws. Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood watchman who thought Martin looked suspicious, wasn’t arrested for 44 days after the Feb. 26, 2012, shooting as police in Sanford, Florida, insisted that Florida’s stand your ground law prohibited charges.

Zimmerman was eventually arrested and charged, but his attorneys chose not to pursue a stand your ground claim, which could have resulted in the dismissal of murder changes as well as immunity from prosecution. But during the trial, the law was essentially used as part of his self-defense argument. Jurors found him not guilty.

In Georgia, which also has a stand your ground law, three white men accused of fatally shooting&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/how-ahmaud-arberys-killing-spurred-a-national-reckoning-on-race">Ahmaud Arbery</a>&nbsp;in 2020 claimed self-defense. Travis McMichael, his father Greg McMichael and neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan claimed they chased Arbery, who was Black, because they thought he was a burglar. All three were&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/watch-live-three-men-convicted-of-the-murder-of-ahmaud-arbery-will-be-sentenced-for-the-killing">convicted of murder</a>.

In 2022, Wichita, Kansas, area district attorney Marc Bennett was critical of the state’s stand your ground law when he announced that he wouldn’t file charges over the death of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wichita-kansas-a51f619b8b196987e74b046ac399680c">Cedric Lofton</a>, a Black 17-year-old who was restrained facedown for more than 30 minutes at a juvenile detention center. Bennett said the law prevented him from bringing charges because staff members were protecting themselves.

With the Chiefs parade case unfolding, it is time to look anew at these laws, said Melba Pearson, a former homicide prosecutor who is now the director of prosecution projects at the Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy at Florida International University.

“What are truly the limits in terms of stand your ground and what really falls into the category of self-defense?" she asked. "Do we need to revisit what stand your ground looks like?”

Chiefs rally shooting could test expanded 'stand your ground' protections

Beverley Sue County passed away on February 24, 2024 after a long and painful illness in Wahoo, Nebraska. &nbsp; &nbsp;She was born on October 6, 1942 in Stratton, Colorado to Kenneth and Lucille (Hooper) Scheierman. &nbsp;Her sister Betsy Bea was born two years later.

When Bev was eight years old, her parents divorced and in 1952, Mabel Garner and Kenny Scheierman were married. &nbsp;They moved from a house in Stratton to a place 15 miles south of Stratton.

Bev attended elementary and high school in Stratton and graduated with the class of 1960.

Bev was gifted from a young age with the ability to play the piano “by ear”. &nbsp;It was Mabel (Mom) who thought she should be educated in reading music. &nbsp;She found the music teacher, Minta Coleman, who lived in Burlington, to be her instructor. &nbsp; It was Mom’s strict disciplines of practice and driving Bev to Burlington every week for lessons that facilitated Bev’s distinction as being Mrs. Coleman’s “star” pupil. &nbsp;Mrs. Coleman insisted that Bev be honored with a solo piano recital replete with formal printed and mailed invitations. &nbsp; The recital was held at the Burlington United Methodist Church when she was 16 years old.

She attended Anderson College in Anderson, Indiana for three years where she attended beauty school to hone her skills after practicing on her sister for years.

Bev’s birth mother, Lucille, married Jack Carpenter and lived in Sterling, Colorado. &nbsp;They had three children together. &nbsp;Sister, Jacque, and brothers, Bruce and Chris, became part of her family. &nbsp;While visiting her extended family in Sterling, Lucille suggested she meet her paper boy, Jerry County, because he was so industrious. &nbsp;Needless to say, a courtship ensued and the rest is history.

Bev and Jerry were married December 20, 1964 in Stratton, Colorado and they lived in Denver where Bev worked at a bank and later started using her education and became a beautician while Jerry attended the University of Colorado in Denver. In 1980, the County family moved to Burlington, Colorado when Jerry joined Noel Winfrey to form the CPA partnership, Winfrey and County. &nbsp;Bev continued her beautician business in Burlington for several years, until her health wouldn’t allow her to work and was forced to retire.

Bev was a member of the Burlington United Methodist Church where she was the pianist and also volunteered as the Burlington Rotary Club pianist.

Because music was a major focus in her life, Bev was a 24-year subscriber to the Denver Center for Performing Arts and attended most of all the best Broadway musicals and theater productions. &nbsp;These Saturday trips to Denver for lunch, theater, and dinner with good friends were memorable times for many years.

Bev was an avid advocate for planting trees, not only in her yard, but around the City of Burlington. &nbsp; Her green thumb extended beyond trees and was gifted in the caring of indoor plants. &nbsp;One plant in particular lived for over 30 years.

Bev was also instrumental in instigating the Neighborhood Watch sticker that homeowners placed in the windows of their homes.

Bev and Jerry were avid campers beginning with a tent. &nbsp;Over the years, they upgraded to a Volkswagen bus, a pop-up, pickup camper, fifth wheel and finally an RV bus, which she referred to as the “Unit”. &nbsp;They were members of the Burlington Good Sams camper group that traveled near and far in the summer months. &nbsp;Bev and Jerry also loved traveling in their RV and visited many states. &nbsp;They finally decided to become “snowbirds” and spent their winter months in Texas and Arizona, returning to Colorado in the spring. &nbsp;They eventually bought a villa at Happy Trails in Surprise, AZ, and this quickly became their second home making new memories with wonderful friends.

Their travels outside of camping included Belize, Roatan, Hawaii, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Mexico, and numerous resort areas in the United States.

In 1988, Bev was diagnosed with a large benign brain tumor, which she referred to as her “orange”. &nbsp; The tumor was removed and she completed the follow-up radiation treatment. &nbsp;For the next several years, the radiation inflicted many obstacles physically. &nbsp;She never complained and with her abiding faith, she bore her health conditions with humor, honor and grace. &nbsp;Bev gradually developed motor skill issues that eventually resulted in nursing home care. In March of 2022, she moved to a beautiful facility, South Haven, in Wahoo, Nebraska. &nbsp;Although she missed her home and friends in Burlington, she quickly made new friends and received wonderful care. &nbsp;She loved watching the birds in the bird display.

She is survived by her son, Jeff (Jill) County of Ashland, NE and daughter, Jodean (Jodi), of Meeker, CO; her grandchildren Jenna (Michael) Satterly of Lincoln, NE; Jasmine (John) Mlakar of Meeker, CO; &nbsp;Jade (Jake) Trahern of Burlington, CO; Justine Carrillo of Meeker, CO; and Jett County (Reannon) of Lincoln, NE; her great grandchildren, Jameson Mlakar, Jaxton Carrillo, Tatum Satterly, Kamryn Trahern, Lawson and Lowan Satterly and Baby Trahern arriving in April; her sisters, Betsy Schutte and Jacque (Tim) Whitsitt, brother, Bruce Carpenter, niece, Kenya (Scott) Huppert and nephew, Clay Short, and many other family and friends.

NEW YORK (AP) —The Federal Trade Commission sued to block a proposed merger between grocery giants Kroger and Albertsons, saying the $24.6 billion deal would eliminate competition and lead to higher prices for millions of Americans.

The FTC filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Oregon on Monday. It was joined in the suit by the attorneys general of eight states and the District of Columbia.

Kroger and Albertsons, two of the nation’s largest grocers,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-albertsons-companies-inc-0cfbd68f81ba8aab7c1d3012c69804d9">agreed to merge</a>&nbsp;in October 2022. The companies said a merger would help them better compete with Walmart, Amazon, Costco and other big rivals. Together, Kroger and Albertsons would control around 13% of the U.S. grocery market; Walmart controls 22%, according to J.P. Morgan analyst Ken Goldman.

Kroger, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, operates 2,750 stores in 35 states and the District of Columbia, including brands like Ralphs, Smith’s and Harris Teeter. Albertsons, based in Boise, Idaho, operates 2,273 stores in 34 states, including brands like Safeway, Jewel Osco and Shaw’s. Together the companies employ around 700,000 people.

But the merger, announced at a time of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-consumers-price-gouging-spending-economy-999e81e2f869a0151e2ee6bbb63370af">high food-price inflation</a>, was bound to get tough regulatory scrutiny. U.S. prices for food eaten at home typically rise 2.5% per year, but in 2022 they rose 11.4% and in 2023 they rose another 5%, according to government data. Inflation&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-prices-rates-economy-biden-federal-reserve-539b662f32a3cea4a514407ae4389174">is cooling</a>, but gradually.

“Kroger's acquisition of Albertsons would lead to additional grocery price hikes for everyday goods, further exacerbating the financial strain consumers across the country face today,” Henry Liu, the director of the FTC's Bureau of Competition, said in a statement.

The FTC, which said the proposed deal would be the largest grocery merger in U.S. history, said it would also erase competition for workers, threatening their ability to win higher wages, better benefits and improved working conditions.

The Biden administration has also shown a willingness to challenge big mergers in court. Last month, the Justice Department&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jetblue-spirit-antitrust-acquisition-45568e98f87b549ba2c66ac89821812d">sued to block a proposed merger</a>&nbsp;between JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines.

The action by the FTC and the states follows lawsuits filed earlier this year in Colorado and Washington to block the merger. The states that joined the FTC lawsuit Monday are Arizona, California, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon and Wyoming.

Kroger has promised to invest $500 million to lower prices as soon as the deal closes. It said it also invested in price reductions when it merged with Harris Teeter in 2014 and Roundy’s in 2016. Kroger also promised to invest $1.3 billion in store improvements at Albertsons as part of the deal.

Last year, C&amp;S Wholesale Grocers agreed to purchase 413 stores and eight distribution centers that Kroger and Albertsons agreed to divest in markets where the two companies’ stores overlapped. C&amp;S said it would honor all collective bargaining agreements with workers.

Still, the United Food and Commercial Workers union, which represents 835,000 grocery workers in the U.S. and Canada, voted last year to oppose the merger, saying Kroger and Albertsons had failed to be transparent about the potential impact of the merger on workers.

The union was also critical of a $4 billion payout to Albertsons shareholders that was announced as part of the merger deal. Several states, including Washington and California,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/idaho-state-government-illinois-california-seattle-business-ab329b299c257b16575f1a74e93624b3">tried unsuccessfully to block the payment</a>&nbsp;in court, saying it would weaken Albertsons financially.

The White House said Wednesday it is seeking public comment on the risks and benefits of having an AI system's key components publicly available for anyone to use and modify. The inquiry is one piece of the broader&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-ai-artificial-intelligence-executive-order-cb86162000d894f238f28ac029005059">executive order</a>&nbsp;that President Joe Biden signed in October to manage the fast-evolving technology.

Tech companies are divided on how open they make their AI models, with some emphasizing the dangers of widely accessible AI model components and others stressing that open science is important for researchers and startups. Among the most vocal promoters of an open approach have been Facebook parent Meta Platforms and IBM.

Biden’s order described open models with the technical name of “dual-use foundation models with widely available weights” and said they needed further study. Weights are numerical values that influence how an AI model performs.

When those weights are publicly posted on the internet, “there can be substantial benefits to innovation, but also substantial security risks, such as the removal of safeguards within the model,” Biden’s order said. He gave Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo until July to talk to experts and come back with recommendations on how to manage the potential benefits and risks.

Now the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration says it is also opening a 30-day comment period to field ideas that will be included in a report to the president.

“One piece of encouraging news is that it’s clear to the experts that this is not a binary issue. There are gradients of openness,” said Alan Davidson, an assistant Commerce secretary and the NTIA's administrator. Davidson told reporters Tuesday that it's possible to find solutions that promote both innovation and safety.

Meta plans to share with the Biden administration "what we’ve learned from building AI technologies in an open way over the last decade so that the benefits of AI can continue to be shared by everyone,” according to a written statement from Nick Clegg, the company's president of global affairs.

White House wades into debate on artificial intelligence systems

ST. LOUIS – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), along with the Independence Police Department, secured three arrest warrants for murder based on an investigation into the October 2023 shooting death of Jason York in Independence, Kansas, according to a media release from the KBI.

Between 6:30 and 9 a.m. Thursday, the U.S. Marshals Service and the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office arrested the three men in North St. Louis, Missouri.

Kevin A. Quinn, 37;&nbsp; Aquan A. Quinn, 20, and&nbsp; Kevin W. Martin, 23, all of St. Louis, were arrested on requested charges of first-degree murder and aggravated robbery.

The suspects were booked into the St. Louis County Jail.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Montgomery County Attorney’s Office is expected to prosecute the case.

U.S. Marshals capture 3 for Kansas robbery, murder

WICHITA, KAN. – A Kansas man was sentenced this week to 25 years in prison for giving a man a fentanyl pill which caused his death, according to the United State's Attornmey. 

According to court documents, in October 2023, Tyler Ralls, 35, of Wichita pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of a controlled substance which resulted in death.

On July 31, 2019, Ralls gave Michael Marsalla, 35, an M30 pill while the two men were working together at a company in Park City. 

Ralls admited that he knew the pill contained fentanyl and knew that Marsalla didn’t have a tolerance for fentanyl.

When Marsalla didn’t arrive at work the next day and couldn’t be reached, Ralls drove to Marsalla’s house in Valley Center and found him unresponsive. 

After calling 911, Ralls phoned his source for fentanyl pills to discuss whether anyone had ever died after taking them. Emergency responders pronounced Marsalla deceased at the scene. A subsequent autopsy determined the victim died of fentanyl toxicity.

“Because of the enormous influx of counterfeit pills into our communities, anytime a person ingests pills that they didn’t get directly from a medical professional, they are at great risk of dying of fentanyl overdose,” said U.S. Attorney Kate E. Brubacher. “Michael Marsalla accepted a pill from someone he thought he could trust. Unfortunately, that trust was misplaced, and it cost Mr. Marsalla his life.”

Prison: Kan. man gave co-worker fentanyl laced pill that led to death

Boyd Lynn Berry, age 77, passed away Friday, February 16 in Atwood, Kansas.

He was born in Colby on October 30, 1946, to Duane and Twila Berry, the first of four children. He started elementary school in Colby and later moved to northern California. He finished high school in Gem, Kansas, then returned back to California to be near his family.

Boyd worked at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard (Naval Base) for a few years then took a job closer to home driving for Van Camp Propane Company, near Oakley, Calif. In 1969 he married Sally Frederick and they moved to San Leandro, CA. Later, they moved to Colby, KS and he worked for the City of Colby.

Boyd had several hobbies, but boats, motorcycles, fishing, planes and flying were among his favorites. He could tell you just about everything about any of them. If he didn't know it, he studied it. He loved fishing and won many fishing contests throughout California, Kansas, and Nebraska. He taught many kids how to waterski, drive a boat or fish.

His passion for flying started when he was young as well. While living in Colby he bought a twin-engine plane and received his pilot's license. He and Sally spent a lot of time at the Colby Airport and she had even considered getting her license as well.

Boyd and Sally were married nine years before they parted. The Fredericks have continued to remain his family.

Boyd worked with his father, Duane Berry, with Berry Construction in Colby in the mid 70's. Later, along with some of the other family members, Boyd moved to Trenton, Nebraska where he and his father continued to work in construction.

However, later, Boyd bought a truck and became an independent driver delivering mail for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement. He then became a seasonal game and parks worker for the Harry Strunk Lake near Cambridge, Nebraska.In 2016, he relocated to Madison, Kansas to live closer to his family.

Boyd is survived by his brother Randy Berry of Trenton Nebraska and his sister Sheila Jones of Madison, Kansas; nephews and nieces, Shane, Matt and Danielle Jones (Nortier), Shonette and John Daniels, Aaron, Adrienne (Baumfalk), Brian and Elaine Berry and Wade Bryant; mother-in-law Millie Frederick, brothers-in-law, Mike, Jeff and Bubba Frederick, sisters-in-law, Nancy and Merlynne Frederick (Parker); and Sally Sparks.

He was prrceded in death by his parents Duane and Twila Berry; sister Loretta Bryant; nephew Jarod Berry; grandparents Clement and Neva Berry and Charlie and Mildred Carpenter.His family and friends will miss him dearly.<a>Read Less</a>

Delbert L. Rose, age 93, passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. &nbsp;He was born on September 27, 1930, in Scott City, Kansas, the son of Hubert Coy and Neva Berniece Quance Rose. &nbsp;Delbert was a resident of Logan County, Kansas from 1950 until moving to Scott City, Kansas in 1999. &nbsp;He was a farmer.

He was a member of the United Christian Church in Oakley, Kansas, served on the Logan County Soil Conservation Board for 25 years, the USD 274 Board of Education for 12 years, the Farm Bureau Board, Lee’s Township Board, and was an Observer for the National Weather Service for 50 years.

On April 23, 1950, he married Patricia L. McGuire in Oakley, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;She passed away on October 14, 2004, in Scott City, Kansas.

Delbert L. Rose

Mildred Garner (Reynolds) was born December 14, 1938, in Ogallah, KS, to Clarence and Jessie (Carlton) Reynolds. She passed away on February 19, 2024, at the age of 85.

Mildred graduated from Trego Community High School in WaKeeney, KS, in 1956.

On October 13, 1957, she was united in marriage to Gayle Garner in the Ogallah Christian Church, Ogallah, KS. To this union, three children were born. Gayle preceded her in death on July 6, 2010.

Mildred was a member of the Ogallah Christian Church, Ladies Aid of the Ogallah Christian Church, and Friendly Dozen, Ogallah. She was also a member of the Y.M.P. Club, WaKeeney, and served on the board of Trego Senior Center, WaKeeney, and Hays Shooting Stars Square Dance Club, Hays, KS.

Those left to mourn her loss are two daughters, Debra Dykema and husband, Darwin, WaKeeney, KS; Michelle Gieber and friend, Terry Kuchcinski, Manhattan, KS; and a daughter-in-law, Cathy Tidball, WaKeeney, KS. Three grandchildren, Amanda Esslinger and husband Tony, Ridgecrest, CA; D’Anne Dykema and friend David Olivas, WaKeeney, KS; and Devin Lemman and husband Joshua and children, Hays, KS. Four great-grandchildren: Abrienna and Nicholas Esslinger, Ridgecrest, CA; and Jesse and Ava Olivas, WaKeeney, KS.

Her parents, a brother, Jack, a son, Allen, a son-in-law, Doug Gieber, and many relatives and friends preceded her in death.

Mildred enjoyed traveling, the highlights of her vacations were Alaska and Germany. She also enjoyed reading, knitting, and crocheting (a talent she passed on to her children and grandchildren). Mildred's faith in the Lord was very important to her, and it shaped her into a loving spouse, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, as well as a caring friend to many. It is because of her faith that we rejoice, knowing that she is living in the presence of our Lord for all eternity.

Services will be Friday, February 23, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Ogallah Christian Church, Ogallah, KS, followed by interment in the Ogallah Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, February 22, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney, KS.

But the sit-down also opened Biden up to fresh scrutiny over his age and memory, and now the public release of a transcript of that discussion is being sought by both Biden allies and critics seeking political advantage.

The five-hour interview over two days, led by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/who-is-robert-hur-special-counsel-biden-d715ffd26adc75f2ba740d1960936a09">special counsel Robert Hur</a>, helped establish that Biden didn’t intend to retain most of the sensitive records from his vice presidency that were found at his home and personal office. But Hur’s report also repeatedly impugned Biden’s memory in a deeply personal way, suggesting, for example, the president couldn’t remember when his own son had died.

The transcript, if released, could provide a fuller picture of the conversation.

The White House has the ultimate say over whether to make public the transcript or audio recording of the interview or to claim executive privilege and keep the interview private. There's precedent for documents related to White House investigations to ultimately become public — but also to be withheld.

A transcript of President Bill Clinton’s 1998 grand jury appearance related to allegations of a sexual relationship with intern Monica Lewinsky was included as part of Independent Counsel Ken Starr’s massive report, which was delivered to the House and subsequently released to the public by Congress following a vote.

The Starr team debated extensively how much to disclose in the report, mindful of the graphic and sensitive nature of the findings, said Robert Bittman, who served as a Starr deputy during the investigation. Recognizing that it was ultimately up to the House to decide what to public public, the team gave “all the information (to Congress) that we had so they can make their own decisions.”

President George W. Bush, on the other hand, invoked executive privilege to block Congress from seeing the FBI report of an interview with Vice President Dick Cheney and other records related to the administration's leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity in 2003. The move angered Congress.

Biden was joined by White House Counsel Ed Siskel, the counsel’s office investigations leader Richard Sauber and the president's personal lawyer Bob Bauer. Several other individuals from both sides were in the room as well, according to a person familiar with the interviews who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss them.Separately, House Republicans have reached out to Hur and his representatives on the possibility of Hur testifying before Congress, and he has expressed a willingness to do so, according to two people who were not authorized to speak publicly about the request and spoke on condition of anonymity.Republicans and Democrats alike are interested in more complete details about what went into the report. Biden and his allies say a full transcript would show the president is mentally sharp and will prove that Hur cherry-picked moments solely to make him seem feeble. "I didn’t come away from the special counsel’s failure to ask precise questions and think to myself, ‘he has mental acuity problems,’ I just thought he was asking bad questions.”Republicans, meanwhile, have also requested that the audio of the interviews be made public and want to know more on why Hur chose not to prosecute Biden, particularly when they noted in their report that some evidence showed he held onto and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-ghostwriter-mark-zwonitzer-classified-documents-case-8ad6e560c2eb54e25db149a2d01ad545">shared with a ghostwriter</a>&nbsp;highly classified information.Hur said in his report that he did find evidence that Biden had willfully mishandled classified records but not enough evidence for a criminal prosecution like the one against former President Donald Trump.Trump, in addition to being charged with intentionally hoarding top-secret documents after he left office, is also accused of obstructing&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-classified-documents-justice-department-maralago-cd3b59e50d33eea942772186111c240e">FBI efforts to get them back and of asking staff to conceal evidence from investigators.</a><a href="https://apnews.com/article/classified-documents-biden-trump-special-counsel-b5589ea8f066ede51c8138665f108f7a">Biden and his team, by contrast, alerted law enforcement officials</a>&nbsp;after locating classified records, willingly handed over documents to the government and cooperated with investigators by allowing the FBI to search his properties for any additional files.
