SEDGWICK COUNTY — The parents of a 1-year-old boy are going to prison for his death.

District Judge Jeffrey Goering sentenced the boy's father&nbsp;Brijin McCullough, 31, Wichta, was sentenced Friday by Judge Goering to 36-years in prison. On July 9 he pled guilty to 2nd degree murder and other felonies, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Judge Goering also sentenced the boy's mother Wilma Presley of Wichita to 20-years in prison.

On October 31, 2023, emergency crews responded to the Walmart at Pawnee and Broadway where a woman, later identified as Presley, reported her one-year-old son was unresponsive. EMS took the child to a Wichita hospital where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

On July 12, Presley pled guilty to distributing a controlled substance causing death and aggravated endangering a child along with drug crimes..

Kansas couple going to prison for death of 1-year-old son

KANSAS CITY– A citizen of Nigeria, who was extradited from the United Kingdom, was sentenced in federal court this week for his involvement in a conspiracy to sell stolen financial information on the darknet from tens of thousands of victims from around the world, according to the United State's Attorney.

Simon Kaura was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays to five years in federal prison without parole. At sentencing, the court found that Kaura’s crimes resulted in an intended loss of $6,338,500.

On May 22, 2024, Kaura pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit access device fraud and one count of access device fraud.&nbsp; According to court documents, Kaura admitted to being part of a sophisticated, global conspiracy to obtain and sell stolen financial information on darknet markets — including a market he helped create and administer with his co-conspirators.&nbsp; Kaura operated under the online monikers&nbsp; “apples,” “applepiecards,” “cartman,” and “dpharoah.”

Kaura and his co-conspirators operated as prominent “carding” (stolen financial information) vendors, sometimes under the moniker brand “ggmccloud” and “ggmccloud1,” on multiple darknet markets. Each market allowed users to buy and sell stolen and fraudulent financial information. The markets operated much like conventional e-commerce websites, except that the goods sold on the markets were primarily criminal in nature. Each market required users to transact in digital currencies, such as Bitcoin. These sites enabled users to distribute illegal contraband to buyers throughout the world to perpetrate fraud.

Kaura and his co-conspirators obtained large quantities of stolen financial information and passed it along to other co-conspirators to check, organize, and sell on numerous darknet markets. Kaura and his co-conspirators possessed card information belonging to victims from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Kaura and his co-conspirators were responsible for conducting tens of thousands of illegal transactions on darknet markets from Feb. 22, 2016, to Oct. 1, 2019.

During the conspiracy, Kaura and his co-conspirators also created, launched, and administered their own darknet market, Skynet. From April 2016 to October 2019, the co-conspirators’ market offered stolen financial information and other contraband for sale. The market also hosted a messaging forum and private messaging service, allowing cybercriminals from around the world to meet and communicate freely about their crimes.&nbsp;

Co-defendant Taylor Ross Staats, 41, of Texas was sentenced on Jan. 25, 2024, to 18 months in federal prison without parole after pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit access device fraud. Staats’s main role in the conspiracy was to determine, prior to being advertised for sale, whether the stolen payment cards were still active and capable of use. If so, he organized the card information, and it was posted for sale on the darknet.&nbsp; Staats operated under the online moniker “f9ac4”.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Department of Justice continue to seek forfeiture of more than $4.5 million in criminal proceeds resulting from the co-conspirators crimes.

Nigerian sentenced in KC for selling stolen financial information online

Sonya B. Montgomery, 89, formerly of Norton, passed away September 16, 2024, at Village Shalom in Overland Park, KS. She was born June 2, 1935 in Norton, KS to Cale A. and Sarah J. (Mattson) Sleffel.

Sonya grew up on a farm ten miles south of Norton. Her parents instilled in her values of faith in God, hard work, integrity, and service. Although she did not appreciate farm chores growing up, she later recognized the myriad lessons that farm life provided. Those lessons included gratitude, perseverance, and generosity.

Sonya attended a one-room schoolhouse during her elementary school years and continued her secondary education in the Norton Public School system. She was an excellent student and an accomplished musician. Sonya graduated from Norton Community High School in 1952.

Sonya married LeRoy V. Peil on December 21, 1952, in Norton. They lived for a short time in California while LeRoy served in the United States Navy. Upon returning to Norton, they established a home and began a family. They had four children, three of whom survived to adulthood. Sonya and LeRoy divorced in 1980.

A few years later, Sonya married Rex D. Montgomery on November 20, 1982, in Norton. Although they finally settled in Almena, they enjoyed living and working in McPherson, Kansas for several years.

Sonya’s first job, at age fourteen, was at the Norton Theater. In between taking tickets and balancing the cash box at the end of the evening, she occasionally watched a movie. Sonya felt that the free movie viewing was the best job perk ever.

As an adult, Sonya worked as an office manager, a realtor, a property investor, and a newspaper columnist. She worked continuously into her seventies. Sonya strove always to work with excellence, as though working for the Lord.

Sonya was a member of the Kansas Association of Realtors, the Manhattan Christian College Advisory Board, and the Norton Andbe Home Board of Directors. She enjoyed organizing NCHS All School Alumni Reunions, and also contributed to the growth and sustainability of the Haven House in Norton.

Sonya’s hobbies included hand quilting, cross-stitching, and bridge. However, music was her passion. At age nine, she began accompanying the Sunday school music at the Norton Christian Church. She remained an integral part of the church’s music ministry for over seventy years.

Sonya taught piano and played for funerals, weddings, and other special occasions. She spent many years as an accompanist for the Norton Public Schools' music department. She accompanied vocal concerts, and district, regional, and state music festivals and competitions. She passionately supported music in public education.

During her time as a columnist for the Norton Telegram, she wrote, "Laughter and music have been proven to impact our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. May you always have a song in your heart and on your lips."

Sonya certainly instilled the love of music in the hearts of her children and grandchildren just as her mother and father did for her. She proudly accompanied for her children at church services, school events, or any other community engagements. She also had a front-row seat at many of her children’s and grandchildren’s performances.

Sonya’s life was one well lived. She experienced joy, laughter, love, sorrow, and disappointment throughout her earthly journey. But as she reflected in one of her newspaper columns, "All memories are not sweet and happy ones, but the variety is what makes life - life. If we never loved, we would not have pain. If we never had pain, we would not know the joy to love and to be loved. Sort through your memories, and may the joyous ones be the ones you dwell upon each day."

Sonya is survived by her children: Michael L. (Claudia) Peil of Bonita Springs, FL, Alan R. (Lisa Laham) Peil of Wichita, KS, and Fonda L. (Thomas) Telthorst of Kansas City, KS; stepchildren: Monte (Staci) Montgomery of Almena, KS and Jeris (Reuben) Bartel of Meade, KS; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, many cousins who lovingly call her Sonnie, and faithful friends.

Sonya was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, LeRoy Peil and Rex Montgomery; sister Shirley Ricketts; infant son Todd Peil; and granddaughter Jessica (Peil) Claybrook.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, October 5, 2024, at the Norton Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Norton Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5-7:00 pm Friday, October 4, also at the church. BOLIVAR, Mo. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team extended its winning streak to six matches with a pair of wins on day one of the SBU Invitational on Friday. The Tigers rallied to defeat Truman State in five sets before toppling Ouachita Baptist in four frames.

Fort Hays State is now 7-1 on the year, while Truman State dips to 0-10 overall and Ouachita Baptist moves to 6-4.The Tigers will wrap up the weekend Saturday when they take on tournament host Southwest Baptist at 11:45 a.m.

Fort Hays State 3, Truman State 2 (20-25, 25-22, 23-25, 27-25, 15-12) The Tigers opened the weekend with a five-set battle against Truman State. The Bulldogs led for nearly all of the first set, winning 25-20. FHSU battled back with a 25-22 win in the second set, before TSU closed within one set of its first win of the season with a 25-23 victory in set three.

The Tigers stormed back, quickly taking a nine-point lead in the fourth set, 13-4. The Bulldogs responded with a run of their own, leveling the score at 19 before taking a 23-20 lead. Ouachita Baptist scored the first point of the third set, but that was its only lead as FHSU scored the next four points to go in front for good. Fort Hays State later pushed the lead to 10 before OBU clawed back, closing within one after a 10-1 run. A service ace from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/tallon-rentschler/7951">Tallon Rentschler</a>&nbsp;helped FHSU reach set point before Stucky ended the 25-23 frame with a kill.

Fort Hays State trailed by as many as eight in the fourth set, 17-9, before rallying back with an 11-2 run. The run began with four-straight blocks bookended by kills from Galt, quickly allowing FHSU to close within 18-15. Two kills each from Lovesee and Rains then gave the black and gold Tigers a 20-19 lead before Reeves finished off the match with a kill.

Rains again led the Tigers in kills, totaling 20 kills to go along with seven digs and two blocks. It’s unclear, though, how much they can do with only weeks before the election, or if additional dollars would make an immediate difference.

Days after a gunman was arrested on former President Donald Trump's golf course, the House on Friday overwhelmingly passed bipartisan legislation 405-0 to require the agency use the same standards when assigning agents to major presidential candidates as they do presidents and vice presidents. The efforts come after an&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-vp-vance-rubio-7c7ba6b99b5f38d2d840ed95b2fdc3e5">assassination attempt</a>&nbsp;on former President Donald Trump at a rally in July, and after Secret Service agents arrested a man with a rifle hiding on the golf course at Trump’s Florida club over the weekend. The suspect in Florida apparently also sought&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-assassination-attempt-what-to-know-564c56e167c3cdc6c50f6a2e91db9a6c">to assassinate</a>&nbsp;the GOP presidential nominee.

“In America, elections are determined at the ballot box, not by an assassin’s bullet,” Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., a chief sponsor of the bill, said in floor debate ahead of the vote. “That these incidents were allowed to occur is a stain on our country."

With the election rapidly approaching and Congress headed out of town before October, lawmakers are rushing to figure out exactly what might help, hoping to assess the agency’s most pressing needs while ensuring that they are doing everything they can in an era where political violence has become&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-assassination-attempt-political-violence-america-3cbc5575e2b4c53a231e8abd9b786d22">more commonplace</a>&nbsp;and every politician is a target.

“We have a responsibility here in Congress to get down to the bottom of this to figure out why these things are happening and what we can do about it,” House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said Tuesday. “This is not a partisan issue. We have both parties working on it."

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Thursday that “we've got to get the Secret Service into a position where its protectees are shielded in the most maximum way possible.”

Democrats and Republicans have been in talks with the agency this week to find out whether additional resources are needed. Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy, the Democratic chairman of the spending subcommittee that oversees the Secret Service, said Congress wants to make sure that if it is spending new dollars, “it’s going to help the situation between now and the inauguration.”

Murphy said new money could go toward technology like drones, partnerships with other agencies that could provide immediate assistance and overtime pay for agents. It would likely be added to a stopgap spending bill that Congress will consider next week to keep the government running, either in the form of allowing the Secret Service to spend money more quickly or providing them with emergency dollars.

“I’m confident we are going to take care of this one way or the other,” Murphy said.

After the July shooting, House Republicans&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-shooting-congress-task-force-cd084a29e3a26da7eead4425e4064118">created a bipartisan task force</a>&nbsp;focused on investigating the security failures of that day, and the panel will hold its first hearing next week. The House voted Friday to expand the committee's mandate to include what happened in Florida, even though the Secret Service successfully apprehended the suspect before anyone was hurt.

In a letter earlier this month, the Secret Service told lawmakers that a funding shortfall was not the reason for lapses in Trump's security when a gunman&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-assassination-attempt-fbi-secret-service-a382e3ec081dd13e85eaa9e726cca02c">climbed onto an unsecured roof</a>&nbsp;on July 13 at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and opened fire. But Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe Jr. said this week that the agency had “immediate needs” and that he’s talking to Congress.

Secret Service officials also told lawmakers behind closed doors that they have already increased Trump’s security to the same level as Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden.

"There are a handful of specialized assets only the commander in chief gets, but the rest of his protection is at the same level,” Spencer Love, a Democratic spokesperson for the House task force, said after the agency briefed members on Wednesday.

In the Senate, Florida Sen. Rick Scott has also introduced a bill mandating similar protection for presidential candidates. Both bills would also require regular reports to Congress on the status of the candidates’ protection. Senate leaders have not yet said whether they will consider the legislation.

In a joint statement after the bill’s passage, Lawler and his co-sponsor, Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres of New York, urged the Senate to take up the bill and President Joe Biden to sign it. They thanked Biden for expanding Trump’s security but said that “without the passage and implementation of this legislation, this enhanced protection will not be codified into law and is subject to change with time.”

Republicans have argued that an overhaul of the agency, and potentially reallocating agents, should be a higher priority than funding.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, a Louisiana Republican who was himself shot at a baseball practice in 2017, noted this week that the Secret Service has received regular budget increases in recent years.

“It’s not about the money,” Scalise said, but “what they’re doing with the money.”

Rep. Mike Waltz, a Republican on the task force, said he pushed Secret Service officials Wednesday on what new resources they needed and they said they were still evaluating.

“I think it’s irresponsible to just throw money at it when they’re not even sure what exactly they need and how quickly they can get it,” the Florida lawmaker said, adding that he hopes the agency shifts to a more threat-focused approach to protecting officials and candidates.

It's unclear, though, if Republicans would fight a funding boost.

“It’s been made implicitly clear that they’re stretched pretty thin,” said Democratic Rep. Glenn Ivey, a member of the task force. “I know that there’s some folks who see a $3 billion budget and think that should be enough. But when you look at where all of the bodies have to go, that’s a problem.”

Unanimous: House votes to boost Trump security 

Rosa Lee Cook (Workman), 69, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Center. Born on February 28, 1955, in Parsons, West Virginia, she was the daughter of Charles Workman and Alleta (Helmick) Workman.

Rosa was one of three children and was known for her joyful spirit, love of nature, and warm heart. She married her first husband, Walter Rollins Jr., with whom she had two children: a son, Walter Rollins III, and a daughter, Kristy Lynn Rollins. Following their later divorce, Rosa found love again and married Larry E. Cook on October 19, 2007, forming a beautiful, blended family in Laredo, Texas.

She had a deep love for life’s simple pleasures. She enjoyed true camping—tents, not campers—fully immersing herself in nature’s beauty. Her passion for games was shared with those around her. She excelled at board games, card games, and puzzles, delighting in playing with family and friends. Rosa’s kind heart and competitive spirit made every game night memorable, leaving her loved ones with cherished memories.

Rosa was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Walter Rollins III; her brother, Richard Workman; her father- and mother-in-law, Alfred and Dorothy Cook; her stepdaughter, Sheree J. Chestnut; her step-granddaughter, Tristan Baker; and her step-great-granddaughter, Ramona Chestnut.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Larry Cook of Wichita, Kansas; her loving sister, Brenda of Georgia; and her daughter, Kristy (Albert) Mendoza of Laredo, Texas. She also leaves behind two stepdaughters: Sindi (Joe Miller) Baker of Glasgow, Montana, and Lacey Cook of Wichita, Kansas; four stepsons: Shad (Bonnie) Cook and Shawn Cook, both of Gove, Kansas; Shaylon (Cassie) Cook of Glasgow, Montana; and Joshua (Gabriela Gonzalez) Cook of Wichita, Kansas.

Rosa is also survived by one grandson, Trey Mendoza; 25 step-grandchildren; 26 step-great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law, Wayne (Mary) Cook; and numerous extended family members and friends who loved her dearly.

Rosa’s love for family, her joyous spirit, and her playful soul will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, fun, and unshakeable love.

Marco Macias, associate professor of history at Fort Hays State University, gave the third lecture in the Sorting Out Race Speaker series Wednesday at the Hays Public Library.

Macias' lecture was titled "Unpacking Stereotypes: A Journey through Mexican-American Representation in Thrift Finds and Media."

Macias' hobby is collecting items from thrift stores and online that depict Latinos—often in stereotypical lights.

He began his lecture by showing a photograph he found in a Wichita thrift store. It was titled "Wedding Best" and depicted a family, some of whom were wearing KKK robes.

Macias showed photos of several items—plates and salt and pepper shakers—that he said depicted "sleepy Mexicans."

"It creates perceptions or reinforces stereotypes of Mexicans being lazy," he said, "of Mexicans falling asleep in corners or being lazy."

He also shared some historical tourist photos from Tijuana.&nbsp;

During prohibition, Tijuana became a place where Americans would go to drink, gamble and engage in prostitution. That became translated through these tourist items and pop culture into a broader stereotype of Mexico.

"Tijuana becomes this symbol of sin for American tourists, demonized by American tourists," Macias said. "People in Mexico don't care about going to Tijuana for fun. That's not their perception of fun."

"This resonates to contemporary politics. This is where we first see some of these images feed into contemporary politics."

Macias said the media have historically also stereotyped Mexico as primitive or backward.

Macias said he's had Americans ask him if they have internet in Mexico.&nbsp;

Images of Mexicans also often depict a male figure wearing a big hat or a poncho.

"If you go to Mexico nowadays, you would be hard-pressed to find one," he said," because, surprise, we dress like people from the United States."

Macias presented examples of souvenirs from Mexico, including an ashtray and photographs that portrayed Latina women as oversexualized.

Later in his presentation, he shared images from Scott White taken of Latina women in the early 1900s that sexualized those women.

He said some of White's images were tame compared to other images that showed Latina and Indigenous women bare-breasted.

Macias collects comic books and other pop culture items depicting Panch0 Villa.

Villa was a figure in the Mexican Revolution, beginning in 1911.&nbsp;Villa was assassinated when he was 45 in 1923.

Macias showed examples of different portrayals of Villa and how they evolved.

In 1913, he was portrayed in America as a clean-cut heroic figure when the U.S. was backing him.

However, the political tide turned in Mexico. In 1916, Villa raided Columbus, New Mexico, to goad the United States into invading Mexico.

The popular image of the Villa was transformed into a wild bandit.&nbsp;

"Teenagers in the nineteen-teens are creating perceptions through specific people like Pancho Villa," he said.

During the same time frame, a movie, Bronco Billy the Greaser, was showing in the cinema.

"It presents Mexican Americans or Mexicans as bandits, as filthy, as violent, as punks," Macias said.

Macias said pop culture is a very strong way we receive our understanding of the world.

"We can read books, but we probably get most of our cultural understanding from watching movies and other pop culture and artifacts," he said.

Macias showed a photo of a tequila bottle that depicted Pancho Villa. You open the bottle by removing the figure's head. The irony of this is that Villa's body was decapitated after death, and his skull was removed.

The other irony is that Villa didn't drink.&nbsp;

The weirdest find he had was allegedly Pancho Villa's trigger finger.

Stereoscope images from the 1910s and '20s also presented Mexico and Latin America as primitive. This included indigenous people of the regions.

Macias presented several stereoscope images from the period he found in an antique store. One image depicted indigenous people from the early 20th Century in Chile.

The text on the stereoscope describes the people as an "ungainly, ill-formed lot."

Macias said that this tribe of Selk'nam people had been extinguished. They lived in an area where there was a gold rush. They were forced off their native lands onto reservations.

The stereoscope image was not in the context of their native land, dress or culture, but on a reservation.

When he visited China during the summer, he found even more stereotypical images of Mexican and Latino people. Chip packages depicted Latinos wearing big hats or ponchos and sporting large mustaches.

Although Macias has collected historical Western depictions of Mexican and Latino people for about 15 years, he said there are ethical concerns about keeping some of these items in circulation.

"The danger is the reinforcement of stereotypes. Current politics. When they demonize immigrants ... what's feeding those stereotypes is the dangerous part because they are coming from these historical things," he said.

He said some pop cultural images are positive.

Frida Kahlo's art and image are often featured in pop culture, and she is portrayed as a strong and creative woman.

Even the cartoon character Speedy Gonzales was a stereotype. However, some aspects of that character were positive. He was fast, smart, heroic, and always won out against&nbsp;Sylvester, the cat.

The next speaker in the series will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Schmidt Commons at the Hays Public Library. Information on the speaker and accompanying exhibit at the library is below.

Fort Hays State University has added a fifth speaker to the series. In October, Cornel Pewewardy will present on Native American stereotypes perpetuated by Native Americans.

In 1916, Villa raided Columbus, New Mexico, to goad the United States into invading Mexico.The popular image of the Villa was transformed into a wild bandit.&nbsp;"Teenagers in the nineteen-teens are creating perceptions through specific people like Pancho Villa," he said.During the same time frame, a movie, Bronco Billy the Greaser, was showing in the cinema."It presents Mexican Americans or Mexicans as bandits, as filthy, as violent, as punks," Macias said.Macias said pop culture is a very strong way we receive our understanding of the world."We can read books, but we probably get most of our cultural understanding from watching movies and other pop culture and artifacts," he said.Macias showed a photo of a tequila bottle that depicted Pancho Villa. You open the bottle by removing the figure's head. The irony of this is that Villa's body was decapitated after death, and his skull was removed.The other irony is that Villa didn't drink.&nbsp;The weirdest find he had was allegedly Pancho Villa's trigger finger.Stereoscope images from the 1910s and '20s also presented Mexico and Latin America as primitive. This included indigenous people of the regions.<figure>

One image depicted indigenous people from the early 20th Century in Chile.The text on the stereoscope describes the people as an "ungainly, ill-formed lot."Macias said that this tribe of Selk'nam people had been extinguished. They lived in an area where there was a gold rush. They were forced off their native lands onto reservations.The stereoscope image was not in the context of their native land, dress or culture, but on a reservation.<figure>

Chip packages depicted Latinos wearing big hats or ponchos and sporting large mustaches.Although Macias has collected historical Western depictions of Mexican and Latino people for about 15 years, he said there are ethical concerns about keeping some of these items in circulation."The danger is the reinforcement of stereotypes. Current politics. When they demonize immigrants ... what's feeding those stereotypes is the dangerous part because they are coming from these historical things," he said.He said some pop cultural images are positive.Frida Kahlo's art and image are often featured in pop culture, and she is portrayed as a strong and creative woman.Even the cartoon character Speedy Gonzales was a stereotype. However, some aspects of that character were positive. He was fast, smart, heroic, and always won out against&nbsp;Sylvester, the cat.The next speaker in the series will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Schmidt Commons at the Hays Public Library. FHSU professor discusses Mexican stereotypes in pop culture

KANSAS CITY (AP) —A federal judge has partially sided with the family of a Black man who was fatally shot by a now-imprisoned white Kansas City, Missouri, police detective.

U.S. District Judge Beth Phillips ruled Wednesday that Eric DeValkenaere violated 26-year-old Cameron Lamb’s Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable search and seizure by entering his property in 2019 without a warrant or other legal reason to be there.

However, Phillips declined to issue a judgment on the family's claim that the ensuing shooting amounted to excessive force, largely for technical reasons. Phillips made no immediate decision on damages in the wrongful death case&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mo-state-wire-michael-brown-kansas-city-shootings-police-2303f1c736c4c85ea0a6a114d5f7b94b">filed</a>&nbsp;against the Kansas City police board and&nbsp;<a href="https://newsroom.ap.org/Seeking%20to%20match%20these%20statements%20from%20member%20story:%20John%20Coyle,%20an%20attorney%20for%20Lamb%E2%80%99s%20family,%20said%20the%20family%20hoped%20the%20ruling%20would%20force%20the%20police%20board%20to">DeValkenaere</a>.

The case has divided activists and Republican lawmakers.

The shooting happened as Lamb returned home after chasing his girlfriend’s convertible. Lamb was backing into a detached garage in the backyard when DeValkenaere and another detective, Troy Schwalm, arrived.

Phillips, who relied heavily on evidence presented in the criminal case, noted that Lamb kicked over a barricade to get into the backyard and had no legal reason to be there.

DeValkenaere testified at his trial that he fired after Lamb pointed a gun at Schwalm and that he believed his actions saved his partner’s life.

But Phillips noted that Schwalm said he never saw a gun. At the criminal trial, prosecutors argued that police staged the shooting scene to support their claims that Lamb was armed.

Phillips said that factual dispute prevents her from granting summary judgment on the issue of excessive force. A summary judgment is issued without a full trial and granted when the facts aren't in dispute.

Lamb’s name was often invoked during racial injustice protests in Kansas City in 2020.

DeValkenaere&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/crime-police-shootings-kansas-city-2af535a9a637024a23b3530c1c20cc2e">left the police force after his conviction</a>&nbsp;but remained free on bond until&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-police-shooting-974b3aa6e4736005b553672489bb46ea">losing his appeal</a>&nbsp;in October 2023. The Missouri Supreme Court subsequently&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/exkansas-city-detective-conviction-appeal-507be4b6eb77e19a71f5fbacc081088e">declined</a>&nbsp;to hear an appeal.

A Kansas City police spokesman said the department doesn’t comment on pending litigation.

DeValkenaere had the backing of Republican Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, whose office&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/detective-fatal-shooting-attorney-general-appeal-16957c1b9f09d91e17e3a3cfb75c1a07">asked the appeals court</a>&nbsp;to reverse his conviction or order a new trial. That was unusual because the attorney general’s office typically defends convictions, rather than appeals them.

DeValkenaere’s wife, Sarah DeValkenaere, often uses social media to urge followers to request a pardon. And Missouri Gov. Mike Parson, a former Polk County sheriff, acknowledged the pressure in an interview in August on KCMO Talk Radio.

“There’s not a week that goes by that somebody’s not reaching out to me about that issue and we’re going to see what happens here before long. I’ll leave it at that. But you know, I don’t like where he’s at. I’ll just say that,” Parson said.

Parson didn’t run for reelection because state law bars him from seeking another term. But in the GOP race to determine his replacement, all three major candidates either promised to release DeValkenaere or vowed a close review of his request for clemency.

Judge: KCPD detective violated black man's rights before killing him

Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Chairman Jim Dunning, Jr., announced today the appointment of Richard Konzem as executive director of the organization.

Konzem will assume his duties immediately.

Konzem has a long history with the hall of fame, recently serving on the board of directors for the second time. His first stint was 1999-2007, during which time he held the office of vice-president from 2003-05.

“Richard is eminently qualified to lead the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame,” Dunning said. “His knowledge of the organization, experience in sports, relationships with key constituents and track record of success made his selection an easy one. Speaking on behalf of the board, we are excited to have him as the executive director and look forward to working with him.”

A native of Salina, Konzem has extensive experience professionally and as a volunteer in the sports industry. He began his career serving in various capacities in the University of Kansas athletics department, his last title as senior associate athletic director (1981-2003). He was the athletic director at Benedictine (Kan.) College in 2006-07 and followed in the same capacity at Rockhurst (Mo.) University, 2007-11.&nbsp;

“I’m honored and humbled to be selected to serve the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame,” Konzem said. “I have always admired the organization and have a deep appreciation for the men and women who have achieved excellence in representing the state of Kansas. I look forward to working with the board to advance the organization.”

He concluded his career in college athletics as the Rockhurst men’s and women’s golf coach and served as an adjunct professor in sports management. He retired from those duties in 2022. Konzem also manages his own consulting business, where he has assisted collegiate athletics departments in strategic planning. He has worked in golf event management supporting the PGA Tour and staffed numerous NCAA championship events.&nbsp;

Additionally, Konzem has organizational leadership experience as the chief operating officer for the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and as the deputy director of the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics. His local and state volunteer activities include the Sunflower State Games board of directors, Leadership Kansas, Junior Achievement, Lawrence Parks and Recreation, Douglas County United Way, and Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.&nbsp;

He remains active as a volunteer golf rules official in the state and Midwest region, working events for Central Links/Kansas Golf Association, the Big 12 Conference and the United States Golf Association.&nbsp;

Konzem earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration from the University of Kansas in 1980 and a Master of Arts in athletic administration and physical education from the University of Southern California in 1984. He and his wife, Debbie Vignatelli, reside in Lawrence.

The 2024 Kansas Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be October 13 in Topeka at the Hotel Topeka. The reception begins at 5 p.m. with the program to follow. Konzem selected executive director of Kansas Sports Hall of Fame

TOPEKA&nbsp;– With less than one month remaining before voter registration closes for the November general election, Kansas crossed a milestone – 2 million Kansans are on the voter rolls, according to a media release from the Kansas Secretary of State's office.

Secretary of State Scott Schwab announced this week that Kansas met this threshold late last week, and the number is expected to continue to rise before registration closes on October 15th.

Since January 2024, 83,293 new registered voters have been added. “I am pleased to see so many Kansans taking the important step of registering to vote,” Schwab said.

“I remind Kansans that the most secure way to register is through VoteKansas.gov. The use of a .gov address ensures security and lets Kansans know they are accessing an official government site, rather than a third-party one,” Schwab said.

Kansans wishing to participate in the November 5 general election must ensure they are registered and that their voter registration information is up to date by October 15. Also, those who are 17 now but will turn 18 by Election Day can register to vote.

As a result, the postgame fireworks show has been postponed and is now planned to follow the Homecoming game on Saturday, October 5.

Fort Hays State enters Saturday's game at 2-1 overall on the season. Northeastern State enters the contest at 0-2 overall.

🏈 FHSU game vs. Northeastern State moved up to 11am kickoff, fireworks postponed

Growing up in Ellsworth, Braden Schulte has always exemplified the determined spirit Fort Hays State University students are known for. With his senior year underway, Schulte is thankful to those who have supported him throughout his time on campus. He’s most appreciative of FHSU's Half Century Club.

“Knowing that others believe in my education means a great deal to me. It provides an extra sense of encouragement and motivation to work hard and achieve my goals,” Schulte said. &nbsp;

Like Schulte, members of the Half Century Club once called Fort Hays State University home. The place where their dreams took flight and possibilities seemed limitless. 

The Half Century Club was established at FHSU in 1969 and is made up of alumni who graduated from the university 50 or more years ago. The scholarship supports undergraduate students who are descendants of Half Century Club members.

In high school,&nbsp;Schulte pushed himself to participate in as many sports and activities as possible. Through his involvement, he developed leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. 

Schulte’s interest in mathematics and economics led him to FHSU, where he enrolled as a third-generation student. Walking in the footsteps of both paternal grandparents, parents, and older brothers, Schulte was confident that Fort Hays State was the right choice.

Aside from the affordable tuition and strong campus community, Schulte feels uplifted by the generosity of alumni who have helped him achieve his goals. Receiving financial support has allowed him to focus more on his studies and the opportunities available to him. 

This past summer, Schulte was able to take an internship with Koch Industries, which will help him in his career as an aspiring financial analyst.

Schulte hopes to meet some of FHSU’s Half Century Club members at Homecoming in a few short weeks. 

Celebrating their 50-year reunion, the Class of 1974 will join the esteemed Half Century Club group during this year’s Homecoming, scheduled for October 3 – 5. Classmates of 1974 will be recognized during the Half Century Club luncheon and induction ceremony on Friday, October 4, and again on Saturday during the Half Century Club breakfast.

Half Century Club gives back to third-generation FHSU student

JOHNSONC OUNTY —A man from Arkansas has admitted his role in a violent knife attack.

Last week, 35-year-old&nbsp;Amanjit Singh pleased no contest to attempted First Degree Murder, according to the Johnson County District Attorney's office.

In June of 2023, police responded to Stonebridge Liquors at W. 67th Street and Nieman Road in the city of Shawnee.&nbsp;&nbsp;The victim told investigators a man walked into the liquor store as she worked and attacked her with a knife.

Court documents say Singh is accused of stabbing the victim multiple times. He is scheduled for sentenceing on October 3.

Yvonne Edith (Hughes) Azeltine, 91, of Milan passed away Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Ripley Crossing- Milan, Indiana. Yvonne was born on Friday, September 16, 1932, in London, England; daughter of Harold and Eva (DeOrnavol) Hughes. Yvonne married the love of her life, Robert M. Azeltine Sr., on December 20, 1952, and he preceded her in death on December 16, 1997. She was a very proud military spouse and had loving family members who were in support of the Army, Air Force and Navy.

Most of all Yvonne cherished her loving family.Yvonne will be missed by her sons Robert (Yvonne) Azeltine Jr. of Bunker Hill, West Virginia; LeRoy (Mary Lou) Azeltine of Overland Park, Kansas; James (Debbie) Azeltine of Leawood, Kansas; daughter Charlene (Patrick) Holland of Moores Hill, Indiana; 23 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchildYvonne was preceded in death by her parents Harold and Eva Hughes; husband Robert M. Azeltine Sr.; sons Alan Azeltine, Frederick Azeltine, and Terry Azeltine; daughter Yvette Pryse; 4 brothers; and 5 sisters and her grandson Jasen Azeltine.Yvonne will be laid to rest as her ashes are interred with her loving husband, Robert M. Azeltine at Gaylord cemetery on Saturday, October 12th at 1:00pm.Memorials may be given in honor of Yvonne and Robert to Special Operations Wounded Warriors.
