Rodger Funk, longtime farmer and resident of rural Garden City, died in his home on May 4, 2024.

Rodger was born September 18, 1927 in Salina, Kansas to his parents, Wanna Ford Funk and Rodger Funk, Sr. He graduated in 1946 from Dickinson County Community High School in Chapman, Kansas.

Rodger attended Kansas State College, but seeing the need for the GI Bill, Rodger postponed his education for service in the U.S. Army. Rodger served 18 months in post-war Europe, after which he returned to K-State, graduating in 1950.

Rodger was united in marriage to Vivian Bebermeyer, August 5, 1950, in Abilene, Kansas. They made their home in Great Bend, Kansas with Rodger’s intention of pursuing a career as a county agricultural extension agent. His plans were interrupted in October, 1950 as Rodger was unexpectedly called back into the Army Reserves because of the Korean conflict. Fortunately, the Army assigned Rodger to be a meat inspector in Chicago, where Vivian was able to join him.

Yearning to own land, Rodger entered his name in a drawing for veterans who could purchase and homestead land through the Bureau of Reclamation. His name was drawn for a unit near Hot Springs, South Dakota, where Rodger and Vivian relocated and farmed for nine years. Rodger also taught 5th-8th grade in a two room school in Smithwick, South Dakota.

Rodger and Vivian became parents of three children; Beth in 1952, Boyd in 1953, and Brenda in 1954.

When his father-in-law, Elmer Bebermeyer, was ready to retire, he offered to sell his Finney County land to Rodger and Vivian, so the Funk family returned to Kansas in the fall of 1962.

Rodger was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church, serving on church committees and as a Sunday School teacher.

Rodger served on various community boards; school, coop, soil conservation, crop improvement, extension, library, and museum.

Rodger was named a Kansas Master Farmer in 1985, a meritorious graduate of Chapman High School in 1994, and more recently, the Garden City Coop honored Rodger in their local hall of fame.

Rodger was a reader, traveler, and life long learner who enjoyed a wide range of interests. He appreciated the cultural and ethnic diversity of Garden City. He was a longtime supporter of public radio and television, the Kansas Humanities Council, historical museums, and public libraries.

Rodger will be dearly missed by his survivors; his wife of 73 years, Vivian, along with his children; Beth Love (Dan) of Dodge City, Boyd Funk (Conny) of Garden City, and Brenda Funk of Kansas City. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Elliot Funk (Sami) of Des Moines, Hannah Love of Fort Collins, Sam Funk (Chelsea) of Colby, and Ben Love of Fort Collins, along with two great-grandchildren; Seth Funk and Shea Funk of Colby, Kansas.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday May 7, 2024 at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City, Kansas. Services will be available for viewing through the Garnand Funeral Homes Facebook Page at the time of service. Burial will follow immediately in Valley View Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be given to the Garden City First United Methodist Church, in care of Garnand Funeral Home.

Hazel “Gladys” Roberts passed away peacefully in Wheatland, Wyoming a home she shared with her sister, Carol Zedekar, on Monday, April 8, 2024.

She was born in Hays, Kansas to Edmund and Pearl (Kippes) Leiker, the oldest of four sisters.

A faithful Hays High School Indian and marching band majorette, Hazel cherished and maintained the bonds created in her early years.

On October 18, 1958, swept off her feet by ‘the man of her dreams’, she married Marvin Roberts and started a family in Kansas. A few years later, they moved to the suburbs of Denver, Colorado and continued to grow their family to six sons and one daughter. In 1970, they suffered the loss of their oldest son Mark to Leukemia, shortly after welcoming their youngest son, Brad.

Hazel often said her life with Marvin was a great adventure. Taking them to Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Kansas, Utah, and eventually back to where it all began - Kansas, when Marvin was laid to rest in 2008. Their travels included nearly every state and life together included family, racing, shooting, busses, classic cars, golf, and a myriad of successful small businesses. As Marvin’s biggest fan and steadfastly devoted partner, Hazel was all in. Making sure the family thrived, she was the beautiful glue that held it all together.

Hazel returned to Wyoming in 2010 and has enjoyed creating beautiful artwork, gardening, spending time with friends, her sisters, her children, and welcoming great-grandchildren into the family.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband; son, Mark; parents; and two of her three sisters, Ann Augustine and Ruth Howard.

She is survived by her sister, Carol Zedaker; six of her seven children, Dale Roberts, Linda Finnerty, Jim Roberts, Mike Roberts, Kurt Roberts, Brad Roberts, their spouses; grand and great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Liturgy will be held in Wheatland, at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 13, 2024 at the Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Hiep Nguyen as the celebrant.

All friends and family are welcome for a celebration of Hazel’s life on Friday, May 10 at 1:00 P.M. at the Veterans Cemetery in WaKeeney, Kansas where she will be laid to rest with her beloved Marvin.

Do you have diabetes? Do you support someone you know that has diabetes? This class if for you!

Dining with Diabetes is a K-State Research and Extension health and wellness program that consist of a series of four classes that includes learning, demonstrations, physical activity and tasting healthy foods. The program's focus is to help individuals learn strategies to lessen the health risks of diabetes.

· Increase knowledge about healthy foods

· Present healthy versions of familiar foods and taste testing of recipes

· Provide basic information regarding diabetes and nutrition

· Provide opportunities for sharing and learning from one another and from diabetes health professionals

Dining with Diabetes is a national extension program provided to Kansans by K-State Research and Extension Family and Consumer Sciences professionals and community health partners. The program is a series of four 2-hour classes that are held once a week. Classes consist of a presentation on diabetes self-care or healthful food choices; a five to ten-minute low-impact physical activity; presentations on tasty, healthy familiar foods, sampling foods, and demonstrations of cooking techniques using artificial sweeteners, reduced-fat foods, herbs, and spices.

The program is designed for people with diabetes, pre-diabetes, or at risk for diabetes and their family members, caregivers, and support persons.

Diabetes is an expensive disease. The recent research report, "Economic Costs of Diabetes in the U.S. in 2017" estimates that the total cost of diagnosed diabetes has risen to $327 billion in 2017, this cost was estimated to be $245 billion in 2012. This represents a 26% increase over a five-

year period. This cost includes direct medical expenses ($237 billion) and the cost of reduced productivity ($90 billion). According to this study, people with diabetes spend an average of 2.3 times the amount people without diabetes spend each year on their health. That works out to an average of $16,752 a year per person, about $9,601 of which is directly attributed to diabetes. Source: American Diabetes Association, March 2018.

Diabetes is one of the costliest health conditions in Kansas. Diabetes and prediabetes cost an estimated $2.6 billion in Kansas each year (CDC). More than 50% of spending on type 2 diabetes is for treating health problems that could have been prevented with better diabetes management. Research shows that diabetes can be treated and managed by healthful eating, regular physical activity, and medications to lower blood glucose levels. The Dining with Diabetes program provides education and training focused on behaviors shown to help people with diabetes stay healthy.

Approximately 255,215 people in Kansas, or 11.4% of the adult population, have diagnosed diabetes.

An additional 66,000 people in Kansas have diabetes but don’t know it, greatly increasing their health risk.

There are 782,000 people in Kansas, 35.3% of the adult population, who have prediabetes with blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.

Every year an estimated 20,271 people in Kansas are diagnosed with diabetes.

TOPEKA —About 150,000 people who had some form of interaction with Kansas courts might have had their data breached in&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/11/21/kansas-court-officials-confirm-details-of-evil-criminal-international-cyberattack/">the October cyberattack</a>&nbsp;that took the judicial system offline for weeks.

The Office of Judicial Administration on Monday announced findings from a third-party investigation into the cyberattack. The office said information accessed during the attack came from files given to the office through appellate court litigation, applications to the Kansas bar and other administrative records.

Information such as Social Security numbers, driver’s licenses, government identification cards, payment card information, tax identification card numbers, passports, and health insurance policy information could have all been accessed, among other data.

Chief Justice Marla Luckert apologized on behalf of the Kansas Supreme Court.

“We’re sorry anyone was personally impacted by the actions of the criminals who attacked our court computer systems,” Luckert said. “The judicial branch respects the privacy of information given to us, and it’s a high priority throughout the court system to keep that information secure.”

People impacted by the breach have been sent notification letters. In cases where the person’s address information wasn’t available, their notifications have been published on the judicial branch website.

Court officials stressed that notifications have not been made through phone, text or email, and warned Kansans against engaging with anyone using these forms of communications to talk about the cybersecurity attack. A<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kscourts.org/About-the-Courts/Court-Administration/OJA/Kansas-Courts-Cybersecurity-Incident">&nbsp;court webpage</a>&nbsp;has been implemented to help address questions.

The attack disrupted all but one of the state’s appellate court operations for weeks, with networks locked down and attorneys and judges relying on manual filing of court documents. In November,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/11/21/kansas-court-officials-confirm-details-of-evil-criminal-international-cyberattack/">justices confirmed the attack</a>&nbsp;was the result of a “sophisticated foreign cyberattack,” and that perpetrators “stole data and threatened to post it to a dark website if their demands were not met.”&nbsp;

Information on whether the judicial branch met these demands has not yet been released.

Luckert said the office has placed additional security controls in place and will work to reduce the possibility of future cybersecurity attacks.

Kan. court investigation confirms cyberattack compromised personal data of 150K people

Betty Ruth McJunkin, 95, passed away May 3, 2024 at Country Living of Larned.

She was born October 15, 1928 in Hartville, Ohio, the daughter of Emanuel and Barbara Hochstetler Miller.

Moving from Sheridan, Oregon in 1960, she was a longtime area resident and a homemaker. She was a member of Faith Fellowship, Hanston, Extension Homemakers Unit (Shiley Homemakers), Ness County Farm Wives Coffee Club, and Burdett Seniors. Betty was a coin collector and enjoyed attending church services, making desserts for potluck dinners, cooking, sewing, crocheting and spending time with family.

On May 7, 1961 she married Ivar Dean McJunkin at Great Bend; he preceded her in death in 2008.

Survivors include: two sons, Gary (Rachel) McJunkin, Burdett, Craig (Kimberly) McJunkin, Arkansas City; brother, Elton James “Jim” Miller, New Castle, Colorado; six grandchildren, Caleb McJunkin, Joshua McJunkin, David (Alyssa) McJunkin, Elizabeth McJunkin, Grace (Devin) Smithwick, Benjamin McJunkin.

She was preceded in death by: her husband; parents; three brothers, Roy Miller, Alvin Miller, Orvan Miller; two sisters, Alma Larrew and Dorothy Good.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 13, 2024 at Faith Fellowship, Hanston, with Pastor Doug Ellison presiding. Visitation will be 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, May 12, 2024 at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with family present from 3-5 p.m. Burial in Crandall Union Cemetery.

Students speak of solidarity with victims of Israeli military campaign in Gaza

LAWRENCE — The drum beat of pro-Palestinian sentiment heard for two days on flower-dappled lawns and in academic buildings at the University of Kansas didn’t resume Friday as students apparently turned their attention to immediate challenges of final examinations.

There was no colorful protest banner displayed next to Fraser Hall where demonstrators took up station Wednesday to dramatize objections to the human and infrastructure toll of Israel’s overwhelming military assault on Gaza. The Israeli siege was a response to Hamas’ lethal incursion into border towns in October. On-campus supporters of Israel, who wrapped themselves in the nation’s Star of David flag, also took a day off.

Absent were the unequivocal messages demanding action to “Free Palestine,” “Let Gaza Live,” “End the Occupation” and “Stop the Genocide.” The quest to erect a tent village comparable to centers of protest at campuses elsewhere was thwarted by KU policy forbidding overnight camping. Strong Hall, a campus landmark on Jayhawk Boulevard, no longer served as a magnet for protesters. It reverted to its role as a place of quiet, plodding administrative activity.

It was calm enough that Cole Bruening, a graduate teaching assistant in the Department of Philosophy, brought this dog, Shep, to Wescoe Hall in an attempt to teach the energetic canine to embrace the art of sitting still. He was, of course, aware of student demonstrations about Israel-Gaza fighting, but he chose not to participate.

“I don’t think much about that,” he said. “I know it’s a sensitive subject.”

Members of Students for Justice in Palestine at KU had issued a set of demands, which apparently didn’t warrant a public response from KU administrators.

The protesters, representing students, faculty and staff as well as other Lawrence residents, called for KU to disclose and divest of financial interests in the Israeli government. They issued a plea for KU to stop accepting grants from the U.S. Department of Defense. On Friday, KU announced it ranked fifth nationally among top research universities in the annual survey of military friendly schools.

The last request of demonstrators, who may return to action Monday, was that KU respect their First Amendment rights of free speech and to “grant amnesty” for conduct that might land them in trouble.

Republican U.S. Rep. Tracey Mann, of the 1st District stretching from Colorado to Lawrence, said protests on American campuses were being led by “ill-informed mobs who believe that Hamas, a terrorist organization, is good for the people of Gaza.”

“It could not be further from the truth,” he said. “We are watching the rot of of antisemitism stain our American colleges and universities.”

Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach, a Republican and former University of Missouri-Kansas City law professor, said KU shouldn’t side with “antisemitic terrorists” supportive of the Palestinian cause of independence. In a letter distributed by Kobach, he said the Kansas Board of Regents and KU Chancellor Doug Girod should enforce rules and regulations to prevent disruption of the university’s educational mission.

Kobach used fiery rhetoric while asserting Kansas law prohibited KU from meeting demands of “pro-Hamas” protesters. For example, he said, state law forbid the university from making procurement or investment decisions that amounted to a boycott of the government of Israel.

“As is often the case with uninformed, petulant loudmouths,” Kobach said in a rebuke of picketers, “they have not done their research. And their views are reprehensible.”

U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall, a Kansas Republican and graduate of KU’s medical school, said university protests were a glimpse of what would occur if “we let the woke mob win” the presidential campaign between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump in November.

“Joe Biden wants to give refugee status to thousands of Palestinians in Gaza — the same people who shout death to America,” Marshall said. “Why are the university presidents and this president turning their heads away from the violent crimes that are going on? Why is this president wanting to bring in tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of refugees from Gaza?”

U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, a Kansas Republican who earned undergraduate and law degrees at KU, urged U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona to use their influence to restore order on campuses effectively shut down by antisemitic groups.

“School administrators’ failure to protect Jewish students from discrimination and harassment violates federal law and is grounds for those schools losing access to federal funds,” Moran said. “Espousing support for terrorists such as Hamas violates federal immigration law and is grounds for deportation.”

U.S. Rep. Ron Estes, the Kansas Republican serving the 4th District around Wichita, echoed that sentiment. He said the volume of federal tax dollars funneled to universities and colleges in the United States meant campus administrators had a duty to provide “a safe and secure environment for college students to learn from.”

Rep. Jake LaTurner, the 2nd District Republican who announced he wouldn’t seek reelection in November, said violent antisemitic protests in the United States served interests of Hamas terrorists who “brutally raped, kidnapped and murdered thousands of innocent Israelis on October 7.”

“I stand with Jewish students across the country and fully support our great ally Israel’s right to protect and defend their freedom,” LaTurner said.

Two days of pro-Palestinian protests at KU, then resumption of regular schedule

KANSAS CITY&nbsp; (AP) — Advocates on Friday turned in more than twice the needed number of signatures to put a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/missouri-abortion-campaign-fundraising-election-740fd1267ab84d5e2a4cf6ebe5a56b71">proposal to legalize abortion</a>&nbsp;on the Missouri ballot this year.

The campaign said it turned in more than 380,000 voter signatures — more than double the minimum 171,000 needed to qualify for the ballot.

“Our message is simple and clear,” ACLU Missouri lawyer and campaign spokesperson Tori Schafer said in a statement. “We want to make decisions about our bodies free from political interference.”

If approved by voters, the constitutional amendment would ensure abortion rights until&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-viability-ballot-initiatives-2024-roe-fcf440373973b01f740912cd3bbd98a4">viability</a>.

A moderate, Republican-led Missouri campaign earlier this year abandoned an effort for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-missouri-constitutional-amendment-viability-37e28b7609607ae762626206ea1a72c1">an alternate amendment</a>&nbsp;that would have allowed abortion up to 12 weeks and after that with only limited exceptions.

Like many Republican-controlled states, Missouri&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-us-supreme-court-missouri-government-and-politics-7bb5798bae32c3f15abad3a10941dfb5">outlawed almost all abortions</a>&nbsp;with no exceptions in the case of rape or incest immediately after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. Missouri law only allows abortions for medical emergencies.

There has been a movement to put&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/abortion">abortion rights questions</a>&nbsp;to voters following the 2022 decision. So far, voters in seven states — California, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana, Ohio and Vermont — have sided with abortion rights supporters on ballot measures.

It’s not clear yet how many states will vote on measures to enshrine abortion access in November. In some, the question is whether amendment supporters can get enough valid signatures. In others, it’s up to the legislature. And there’s legal wrangling in the process in some states.

In Missouri, it's now up to Republican Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft to check the validity of the abortion-rights campaign's signatures.

The hope is that the changes would go before voters on the August primary ballot, so the higher threshold for&nbsp;<a href="https://newsroom.ap.org/3d6e2f0d0f5993ddd75522b662d2eb34">constitutional amendments</a>&nbsp;would be in place if the abortion-rights amendment is on the November ballot.

A faction of Senate Republicans staged a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/missouri-senate-medicaid-42928944fde4b20c47390b4d8473d92f">days-long filibuster</a>&nbsp;this week in an attempt to more quickly force the constitutional amendment through the Legislature. But the House and Senate passed different versions of the proposal, and there are only two weeks left before lawmakers' deadline to pass legislation.

Mo. abortion-rights campaign has signatures needed to get on ballot

In 1940, the Great Depression still gripped Ellis, Franklin Roosevelt accepted an unprecedented third presidential term, Bugs Bunny made his movie debut, and the Selective Service Act of 1940, the first peacetime draft in America, went into effect. The world changed and Ellis schools rode those waves.

In January 1940, weak local finances caused the Ellis School Board to vote to lease the local parochial school’s building and equipment and operate it as part of the public school system. The nuns agreed to continue teaching without compensation from February through May. Once the board agreed to this action, they renamed St. Mary’s School to Lincoln Elementary, operating Lincoln School until House Bill 190 made this arrangement illegal in 1945.

While some may find this information contradictory in theory, it solved a community issue. The public school did not have to build a new facility. Nuns continued serving families who desired parochial education. While many forgot this bit of Ellis' history, it reveals how the community worked effectively to meet their children’s educational needs and community values.

World War II began before Ellis fully recovered from the Great Depression. The first half of the '40s saw little development of new programs or building projects in the district. By 1945, the budget had increased to $52,000, a considerable improvement over Depression-era funding even while the district funded an additional grade school.

Once the war ended, community expansion began in earnest. At the Dec. 13, 1946 meeting, board members voted to build a new gymnasium at the high school. Though they approved construction at that time, completion took until spring 1951. In the meantime, the district remodeled the home economics department and updated typewriters in the business department in September 1949.

The '50s introduced more change. Railroad and agricultural businesses thrived while oil and gas industries expanded. Adding further prosperity, the Bureau of Reclamation Project at Cedar Bluff necessitated the building of additional homes to house their employees. More people moved into Ellis, and good fortune reigned.

District 2 in Ellis reflected the successful economic times with a proposed budget of $115,910 in 1951. They celebrated completing the gymnasium and music room, and the first mention of a driver’s education car appeared in the Sept. 13, 1951, board minutes. In addition, rural Districts 26 and 52 were combined with Ellis District 2, requiring District 2 to dispose of those respective properties.

Marking another district first, the board hired a teacher to establish a grade school physical education program. In another innovative action, October minutes record that the district employed a special education teacher to work with 18 to 21 students with developmental delays and/or speech defects.

Teacher salaries also improved. The base salary for “Degree teachers” moved from $2,600 to $2,700 a year. Educators also received the annual increase and a cost-of-living bonus of $100 paid out over their nine-month contract.

Over these 12 years, Ellis mirrored events occurring across the U.S. The Depression was a memory. America had won WW II and returning soldiers experienced a booming economy. Riding these waves of optimism, Ellis residents added programs and improved infrastructure to support their children’s educations. For many, these were western Kansas' golden years.

In 1940, the Great Depression still gripped Ellis, Franklin Roosevelt accepted an unprecedented third presidential term, Bugs Bunny made his movie debut, and the Selective Service Act of 1940, the first peacetime draft in America, went into effect. The world changed and Ellis schools rode those waves.<figure>

 </figure>In January 1940, weak local finances caused the Ellis School Board to vote to lease the local parochial school’s building and equipment and operate it as part of the public school system. The nuns agreed to continue teaching without compensation from February through May. Once the board agreed to this action, they renamed St. Mary’s School to Lincoln Elementary, operating Lincoln School until House Bill 190 made this arrangement illegal in 1945.While some may find this information contradictory in theory, it solved a community issue. The public school did not have to build a new facility. Nuns continued serving families who desired parochial education. While many forgot this bit of Ellis' history, it reveals how the community worked effectively to meet their children’s educational needs and community values.World War II began before Ellis fully recovered from the Great Depression. The first half of the '40s saw little development of new programs or building projects in the district. By 1945, the budget had increased to $52,000, a considerable improvement over Depression-era funding even while the district funded an additional grade school.Once the war ended, community expansion began in earnest. At the Dec. 13, 1946 meeting, board members voted to build a new gymnasium at the high school. Though they approved construction at that time, completion took until spring 1951. In the meantime, the district remodeled the home economics department and updated typewriters in the business department in September 1949.The '50s introduced more change. Railroad and agricultural businesses thrived while oil and gas industries expanded. Adding further prosperity, the Bureau of Reclamation Project at Cedar Bluff necessitated the building of additional homes to house their employees. More people moved into Ellis, and good fortune reigned.District 2 in Ellis reflected the successful economic times with a proposed budget of $115,910 in 1951. They celebrated completing the gymnasium and music room, and the first mention of a driver’s education car appeared in the Sept. 13, 1951, board minutes. In addition, rural Districts 26 and 52 were combined with Ellis District 2, requiring District 2 to dispose of those respective properties.Marking another district first, the board hired a teacher to establish a grade school physical education program. In another innovative action, October minutes record that the district employed a special education teacher to work with 18 to 21 students with developmental delays and/or speech defects.Teacher salaries also improved. The base salary for “Degree teachers” moved from $2,600 to $2,700 a year. Educators also received the annual increase and a cost-of-living bonus of $100 paid out over their nine-month contract.Over these 12 years, Ellis mirrored events occurring across the U.S. The Depression was a memory. America had won WW II and returning soldiers experienced a booming economy. Riding these waves of optimism, Ellis residents added programs and improved infrastructure to support their children’s educations. Madorin: History of Ellis Schools 1940 – Part 14

Timothy Craig Haynes, age 57, of Hays, KS, passed away on April 18, 2024, at Ascension Via Christi-St. Francis in Wichita, KS. Born on October 25, 1966, in Salina, KS, Timothy was the son of Thomas J. Haynes and Karen J. Lacy.

Timothy dedicated himself to the oilfields, working as a roughneck for Southwind Oil Company and various other local oil companies. When he wasn't hard at work, he found joy in the great outdoors hunting and fishing.

Timothy's memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones. He is survived by his father, Thomas J. Haynes of Hays; two sons, Elon Meyer of Westminster, CO, and Harley Haynes of Hays; two daughters, Talia Haynes of Tucson, AZ, and Jazmine Lohrmeyer of Hays; a brother, Terry Haynes of Hays; a sister, Marie Haynes of Overland Park, KS, as well as nine grandchildren, Tyler, Brooklyn, Razariah, Reviahna, Oliver, Ronan, Daunte, Aries, and Cyrilla. He was preceded in death by his mother, Karen, and his stepmother, Lora Gallegos-Haynes. His beloved hunting companion Biff also survives him.

Eleanor A. “Ellie” Gabel, 84, Hays, died Monday, April 29, 2024 at HaysMed.

She was born October 31, 1939 on the family farm in Gove, the daughter of Carl W. and Olive E. (Summers) Katt. She was a graduate of Gove High School with the class of 1957. In 1961, she graduated from St. Anthony School of Nursing and as a registered nurse, she worked at St. Anthony Hospital, Baxter Travenol, and at Fort Hays State University Student Health. On October 12, 1963, she was united in marriage to Gerald J. “Gary” Gabel at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays and they celebrated 60 years of marriage. Together, Gary and Ellie owned and operated Gabel’s Bakery and the Bijou and Red Coat restaurants. Her memberships included St. Joseph Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella Circle #254, RN Club, and the Cedar Bluff Red Hat Ladies. She enjoyed doing word searches, playing Solitaire, and watching Wheel of Fortune and Bold and the Beautiful. Ellie was a wonderful cook who was known for her delicious German food including liverwurst and zitter. Gary and Ellie enjoyed gardening and canning, camping, being at Cedar Bluff Lake, and their home was always a welcoming place where family and friends could enjoy food, drink, conversation, and much laughter.

Survivors include her husband Gary of Hays, a brother, Ron Katt and wife Karol of Victoria, a sister, Ruth Porter and husband Norman of Johnson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Friday, May 3, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Richard Daise officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. LAWRENCE —Student&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinian-campus-student-protests-war-8b0d3a0cedb17f5e892c6ca43bbdf628">protests over the Israel-Hamas war</a>&nbsp;have popped up at many college campuses nationwide including the University of Kansas after being inspired by demonstrators at Columbia University.

&nbsp;A group calling itself University of Kansas Students for Justice in Palestine sent a letter Wednesday to the Office of the Chancellor at the University.&nbsp; Read the letter below.

Students nationwide are calling for universities to separate themselves from companies advancing Israel’s military efforts in Gaza and in some cases from Israel itself. Police have arrested hundreds nationwide since&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/columbia-protests-israel-palestinian-hirsi-cd80372939c7c08a40346e8b7d546da1">detainments at Columbia</a>&nbsp;on April 18.

Officials are trying to resolve the protests as the academic year winds down, but students have dug in at several high-profile universities.

Police have cleared 30 to 40 people from inside Columbia University’s Hamilton Hall late Tuesday after pro-Palestinian protesters occupied the administration building in New York earlier in the day. The scene unfolded shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday as police, wearing helmets and carrying zip ties and riot shields, massed at the Ivy League university’s entrance. Officers breached Hamilton Hall, an administration building on campus, to clear out the structure. The demonstrators had occupied Hamilton Hall more than 12 hours earlier, spreading their reach from an encampment elsewhere on the grounds that’s been there for nearly two weeks. Columbia’s protests earlier this month kicked off demonstrations that now span from California to Massachusetts.

Columbia said Tuesday that students occupying the building face expulsion, that those who did not abide by the deadline terms were being suspended and seniors will be ineligible to graduate on May 15.

CALIFORNIA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY, HUMBOLDT

A weeklong occupation of the administration building at the California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, ended about 3 a.m. Tuesday, when dozens of police officers wearing helmets and wielding batons cleared protesters from campus. The university said 25 people were arrested and taken to jail. A group of demonstrators showed up at the jail later Tuesday, waving Palestinian flags as they rallied for their release.

The university on the state’s rural north coast earlier announced a “hard closure,” meaning that people were not permitted to enter or be on the 8,000-student campus without authorization.

Arrest footage posted on the Lost Coast Outpost, a digital publication, showed about 100 police officers in riot gear arriving in vans and buses and then marching in with shields at the ready.

Some officers approached a group of protesters who were chanting “Viva, viva Palestina!” and sitting in a circle outside the administration building. Police picked them up one by one, tied their hands behind their back with zip ties and led them off campus.

Damage to the school since protests started on April 22 is estimated to be over $1 million, California state Senate President Pro Tempore Mike McGuire, a Democrat whose district includes the campus, said Tuesday.

“Let’s be clear – it’s going to take time to heal, McGuire said. “Cal Poly Humboldt must be a campus where all faiths and students of all backgrounds feel safe, respected, and included. This has not been the case for Humboldt’s Jewish students and others over the past week.”

Yale authorities cleared a protesters’ encampment Tuesday morning after students heeded final warnings to leave, university officials said. Yale and New Haven, Connecticut, police officers were at the site, but no arrests were reported. Yale officials said they warned that students could be arrested and face discipline, including suspension, if they didn’t clear the grassy quad area.

Demonstrators moved their gathering to a public sidewalk area. It was the second encampment removed since last week. On April 22, police arrested nearly 50 people, including 44 students, and took down dozens of tents.

Police moved in on a campus encampment at the Storrs, Connecticut, school Tuesday morning and arrested 25 protesters after giving them several warnings to leave, UConn spokesperson Stephanie Reitz said.

Twenty-four of those arrested were students; one was a former student. They were charged with criminal trespass and disorderly conduct after university officials said they repeatedly ignored directives by campus police to remove tents and disperse from an encampment first set up on April 24.

Tuesday’s arrests came a day after protest leaders met with university officials.

In a statement, protesters said the Cambridge, Massachusetts, school “has sought to shut off all outside access and visibility to the encampment."

"Meanwhile, the Harvard administration has initiated disciplinary action against nearly forty students and student workers,” the statement said.

Last week, Harvard limited access to its famous Harvard Yard to those with school identification after a camp was set up.

The university's president, Chris Eisgruber, posted a statement on Instagram saying 13 protesters — 12 affiliated with the university — were arrested Monday night after briefly occupying Clio Hall, the campus graduate school building.

“All those arrested received summonses for trespassing and have been barred from campus,” Eisgruber said in the statement. “The students will also face University discipline, which may extend to suspension or expulsion.”

Protesters at Brown University in Rhode Island agreed to dismantle their pro-Palestinian encampment Tuesday after school officials said five students will be invited to meet with five members of the Corporation of Brown University in May to present their arguments to divest Brown’s endowment from companies contributing to and profiting from the war in Gaza.

In addition, Brown President Christina Paxson will ask an advisory committee to make a recommendation on divestment by Sept. 30, which will be brought before the school’s governing corporation for a vote in October.

The school in Evanston, Illinois, said Monday that it had reached an agreement with students and faculty who represent the majority of protesters on its campus since Thursday.

The university said in a statement that it agrees to answer questions within 30 days about specific holdings and investments. It also said it would reconvene an advisory committee to ensure “any vendor who profits from the Israeli occupation" will not provide services on campus. The statement said the university plans to further invest in supporting Muslim and Jewish life on campus.

Northwestern says it will permit peaceful demonstrations that comply with university policies through June 1, which is the end of spring quarter classes.

In a confrontation between police and protesters at the Austin school late Monday, 79 people involved were jailed, according to the Travis County sheriff’s department. Most were charged with criminal trespass.

About 150 protesters sat on the ground as state troopers and police encircled them, with hundreds of others shouting when officers dragged someone away. After police cleared the original group of demonstrators, hundreds of students and protesters ran to block officers from leaving campus. Protesters pushed in on officers, creating a mass of shoving bodies before police used pepper spray and set off flash-bang devices to clear a path for a van to take those arrested off campus.

Encampment organizers met with university President Carol Folt for about 90 minutes Monday. Folt declined to discuss details of what was discussed but said the purpose of the meeting was to allow her to hear the concerns of protesters. Another meeting was scheduled for Tuesday.

The university has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestine-war-campus-protests-usc-cff0c1e59fc6164f615a2686d7f1b401">canceled its main graduation ceremony</a>, set for May 10. It already canceled a commencement speech by the school’s pro-Palestinian valedictorian, citing safety concerns.

Security was tightened Tuesday at the campus a day after officials said there were “physical altercations” between dueling factions of protesters.

Mary Osako, vice chancellor for UCLA Strategic Communications, said in a Tuesday statement that anyone involved in blocking classroom access could face expulsion or suspension.

Before dawn Monday, demonstrators at the school in Washington, D.C., tore down metal barricades confining them to University Yard and set up more than a dozen tents in the middle of a street.

Later in the day, there were no signs of conflict. The Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement that it will continue monitoring the situation and that the protest remained peaceful.

The university said it will move law school finals to a different building because of noise from the protests.

A protest at the school in Blacksburg resulted in 82 arrests, including 53 students, a university spokesperson said Monday.

Protesters began occupying the lawn of the graduate life center Friday. After protesters took further steps to occupy the lawn and outdoor spaces Sunday, the university advised those gathered to disperse. Those who failed to comply were warned they would be charged with trespassing, the university said.

Tents were erected Tuesday on the school's Chicago-area campus. The university said in a letter that tents and other structures without permits violate school policies. The school also warned that actions that interfere with operations, damage property or are disruptive will lead to disciplinary measures, including suspension, expulsion and criminal sanctions.

Dozens of students, faculty and staff camped out overnight at the Cleveland school hours after a similar encampment had been broken up and more than 20 people were detained but later released.

School officials initially had said protests would be limited to daylight hours but announced Monday night that students and others affiliated with the school would be allowed to stay at the makeshift encampment on the school’s public green.

Officials were checking the participants’ identification before they were given wristbands signifying they could remain at the site. Roughly 100 people camped out overnight without incident, officials said.

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL

About 30 people were detained by campus police Tuesday morning after the university said encampment protesters refused to leave. At 5:30 a.m., a university statement said protesters needed to remove tents and other items and leave the area by 6 a.m. or risk arrest.

Clearing out the encampment took approximately 45 minutes, according to the university. The university had not responded to a query about whether protesters were arrested and charged.

Tensions escalated Tuesday afternoon when protesters removed the American flag from a flagpole on campus central grounds and replaced it with a Palestinian flag, according to news outlets on the scene. Police then rehung the American flag as protesters and counter-protesters circled the area.

The university issued an alert that classes were canceled for the rest of Tuesday, the last day of scheduled classes.

Nine people, including six students, were arrested at the Gainesville university — where about 50 people began protesting last week — by campus police and state troopers Monday.

Columbia’s protests earlier this month kicked off demonstrations that now span from California to Massachusetts.Columbia said Tuesday that students occupying the building face expulsion, that those who did not abide by the deadline terms were being suspended and seniors will be ineligible to graduate on May 15.CALIFORNIA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY, HUMBOLDTA weeklong occupation of the administration building at the California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, ended about 3 a.m. Tuesday, when dozens of police officers wearing helmets and wielding batons cleared protesters from campus. The university said 25 people were arrested and taken to jail. A group of demonstrators showed up at the jail later Tuesday, waving Palestinian flags as they rallied for their release.The university on the state’s rural north coast earlier announced a “hard closure,” meaning that people were not permitted to enter or be on the 8,000-student campus without authorization.Arrest footage posted on the Lost Coast Outpost, a digital publication, showed about 100 police officers in riot gear arriving in vans and buses and then marching in with shields at the ready.Some officers approached a group of protesters who were chanting “Viva, viva Palestina!” and sitting in a circle outside the administration building. Yale and New Haven, Connecticut, police officers were at the site, but no arrests were reported. It also said it would reconvene an advisory committee to ensure “any vendor who profits from the Israeli occupation" will not provide services on campus. The statement said the university plans to further invest in supporting Muslim and Jewish life on campus.Northwestern says it will permit peaceful demonstrations that comply with university policies through June 1, which is the end of spring quarter classes.UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTINIn a confrontation between police and protesters at the Austin school late Monday, 79 people involved were jailed, according to the Travis County sheriff’s department. Most were charged with criminal trespass.About 150 protesters sat on the ground as state troopers and police encircled them, with hundreds of others shouting when officers dragged someone away. After police cleared the original group of demonstrators, hundreds of students and protesters ran to block officers from leaving campus. Protesters pushed in on officers, creating a mass of shoving bodies before police used pepper spray and set off flash-bang devices to clear a path for a van to take those arrested off campus.UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAEncampment organizers met with university President Carol Folt for about 90 minutes Monday.
